Abbie Cornish in Roland Mouret

Posted on October 11, 2012

This is kind of a sexy-sweet look.

Abbie Cornish attends screening of ‘Seven Psychopaths’ at Clearview Chelsea Cinemas in New York City in a Roland Mouret Resort 2013 floral gown paired with a JustFab bag and shoes.

We’re not the biggest fans of mermaid skirts, but if you’ve got the bod to wear one, go for it, we say. Just so long as you don’t make the Sofia Vergara mistake of thinking that the dress needs to be so tight it makes you light-headed. This walks a line on the tightness factor, but it’s not so awful that we can’t still compliment it. Yeah, it would be better if this could have been let out just a skosh, but we still like the look on her. It’s a pretty print and her rack looks great. Her hair and makeup are soft and pretty. All in all, it’s a win.

I think it’s way too tight–but given that it’s light/white you just don’t notice it as much as in a darker color. She looks like one good deep breath away from splitting seams. :-/

I’m impressed that they make zippers that strong nowadays

  • crash1212

I’d rather have the checked coat in the background in last picture, please. I love the hair and makeup here – the dress is OK. There’s always something wonky with the boobular areas on Roland’s dresses – at least to my eye. But, as you say, if you got the bod, rock the dress.

Amen both to the checked coat and the weird boobs. The dress is way too tight across her tits and it looks like she needed more support. Still, she does look very pretty.

    that’s a very interesting print…

  • Clueless_Jock

IMO, there’s a huge disconnect between the print and the silhouette.

  • charlotte

I’ve never noticed before that she looks like the lovechild of Katherine Heigl and Cathy Cambridge.

    • kimmeister

I totally thought it was Heigl in the first picture!

She is certain;ly serving up the va va voom, here.  And I like the juxtaposition of the painterly floral print with this classic shape.

I love this dress, and the hair, makeup and clutch are all perfect. Letting it out a skosh would have made it WERQ-worthy, but even still, she looks fab.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I don’t know if she can even wheeze in this, I got to be honest here. The cleavage is miraculous, but the rest is making me feel nervous for her lung capacity.

  • Lilithcat

I do like it.  But, honest to god, these designers/stylists get me so confused.  First it’s heavy, dark clothes in the middle of summer, and now it’s a summer garden party dress in October.  Whatever happened to dressing for the weather?

I am somewhat confused by the construction on the bodice. It looks like it is asymmetrical, which throws off the proportion of her bust line. Am I just not seeing it correctly, is it perhaps a function of the angle that the pictures were taken from? What do you think?

    • snarkykitten

I thought I was the only one weirded out by the bust

    • l_c_ann

That exterior dart that makes her left breast a tighter fit ……why?  That alone makes it asymmetric and there appears to be a horizontal dart from under her right armpit that tightens the fit on that side.

Going for that tight of a fit made for some real creativity……but why?

      • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Right! Maye that is what I’m seeing. The left shoulder strap looks like it’s placement is different, though it’s hard to tell because her hair covers it. Glad I’m not alone in this.

my first thought: titscrepancy! but it’s frustrating that there are no frontal shots.  now i’ll have to look it up on style.com.
otherwise, i adore this look.  i’ve loved mermaid skirts since reading katy keene comics as a kid.

  • MilaXX

And of course since the starlets wore winter clothes all Summer, now that it’s Fall, she’s wearing a dress that screams Spring/Summer. Cute look but horribly out of season.

Probably the best I’ve seen her look. I honestly am not familiar with her work at all, and only know her from the RC and possibly breaking up the Reese/Ryan marriage, but this look is making me like her.

  • Trisha26

Pretty but too tight – would never wear anything that caused the fabric to fold or bunch up like that.

  • kikisayshi

I can’t tell if the cut of the bust is intentionally asymmetrical because she’s only showing one side, but she looks lopsided on top. Otherwise a cute look.

  • jw_ny

I like this dress/look in theory…has quite a nice retro shape and feel to it.  She is serving up some glam and overall looks pretty.

I dislike the print; dislike the racer back and low back cutouts; hate, I mean really hate, the nipple darts.  Distracting.  Her hair is kind of a fly-away mess too.

  • Cathy S

    It’s pretty, but too tight.

  • afabulous50

the “girls” look like they’re trying to escape!  But, pretty.

  • B_C_J

Pluses: beautiful print, feminine & sexy silhouette,  correct length for hem, lovely makeup, interesting construction on the bodice.
Minuses: a little too tight (it’s pulling across the hips), hair looks a little messy.
Overall: The effect is pretty and sexy and she pulls it off despite some of the problems.

  • minnye

    Love the bodice!

  • xmixiex

she looks like julie benz a bit.

  • Little_Olive

Hmm. The roll coming out of the dress (I will not call it “back fat”, as it doubt it is) on her upper back says it needed to me bore than a skosh larger. She can carry the silhouette though.

It’s a tough dress, so I cannot be too harsh.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Too tight – and I think that although the dress is lovely, it is too summery.

  • BazoDee

Ohh -I don’t like what the pattern does at the waist seam. Too tight. And I don’t like this fabric on a mermaid dress -too much attention to the seams.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

I don’t like the skirt, or how SQUEEZY it is. But the pattern is lovely.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

She’s on my IHL (although I suspect part of it is rational, she strikes me as a bit of a ruthless climber). This outfit suits my perception of her to a T: the color and print says “aren’t I sweet and pretty” while the shapes says “I’m a sexpot bitch-on-wheels leveraging every asset I’ve got to gain another inch on that star meter”.

Okay I’m done projecting on her. Bitch looks good.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Awful. Floral print, asymmetrical bust and then way too many horizontal lines – some seams, some drag lines. In a block colour she may have got a pass but this is just way too busy to be flattering on a blandly pretty woman.

  • http://twitter.com/juliafoxtrot Julia Fox

The bust line is driving me crazy. I just want to smooth down that wrinkle!

  • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

    Why is the bodice pleated?

  • Monabel

    Ouch. Too tight.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

It looks like the halter straps aren’t symmetrical-are they laying differently on each side or is it the angle of the picture?

  • ballerinawithagun

Definitely not a win. Too tight and is the bodice supposed to be asymmetrical? Really hate the area of exposed zipper just above the waist. This is bad Project Runway. I normally love Roland Mouret but this is just wrong.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

It’s too tight and too white, and her hair is too mermaid-y, if there is such a word.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

Distracting boob flap, other than that, pretty amazing dress.

  • guest2visits

I would love the print if there were more of it; and it’s too tight – looks like ace bandages across the back.
And the crooked front-bodice doesn’t work for me either.

  • sashaychante

This doesn’t work on her because it is far too tight.  It’s a pretty dress.

  • lrhoff

    Hideous.

  • jmorino08

Her face is awesome. The rest is meh…

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/Y3OY6COEVBS2STNCUNIRZ3COUE Claudia

Something about this is off, for me…  Its like the dress was made in panels, as opposed to one whole dress…or something like that.  Can’t…put…finger…on…it…

  • Larkin21

Love it all but the back cut-outs.

  • Sunshine16

    this should get snaps!

  • EEKstl

Yes, she looks gorge but wish she’d done a stronger lip color.

  • Jessica O’Connell

the weirdness of the neckline is making me a little twitchy, buy otherwise i like.

  • librarygrrl64

I still always do a double-take when I see her as a blonde, having seen her first in Bright Star. She looks great here.
