2012 Variety’s Power of Women Luncheon

Posted on October 08, 2012

Hit it, powerful women!

Ashley Greene in Roland Mouret

It’s good. Nothing awe-inspiring or anything, but when you look like her, a tight red dress is sometimes all you need. It’s a bit too tight, though. She’s right on the verge of baby heads.

And we hate the shoes, but you knew that.

Dania Ramirez

Cute, but a little Christmas tree skirt-y.

Felicity Huffman

We’re not sure why, but we really love this dress on her. It’s eye-catching as hell.

Jennifer Garner in Givenchy

You just know the second she laid eyes on that step-and-repeat she was all, “Oh, what the fuck.” It’s a shame her dress blends in so well, but it’s still a pretty good dress for her. We hate the exposed zipper, though; and the shoes are kind of bleh.

Jennifer Love Hewitt

Oh, for crying out loud. Silly putty shoes? With THIS? Also, she needed to dress this up a bit to keep it from looking like a nightgown. Put your hair up and put on a big honking cocktail ring, grab a brightly colored clutch, consider a belt, and put on some more interesting shoes.

Katherine Heigl

The dress is fine, but we’re having a hard time with the hose. Nothing wrong with wearing stockings, but these are too pale against the black dress and don’t look right with brown peep-toes.

Paula Patton

Like everything she wears, it’s too tight, but it’s a great dress for her.

Sarah Paulson

Just because it’s a “powerful women” luncheon doesn’t mean you have to dress like the Regional Director, Mid-Atlantic Region, honey. Spice it up a little.

    Damn, Felicity. She looks fantastic.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Yeah, she looks awesome.  The positioning of the dark pattern in the center of the dress, pulls, her already small waist in further. Plus, its a perfect length for her.

    • msdamselfly

I think she looks pale and drab

      • Rachel Sawyer

         And I hate her hair.

  • afabulous50

    Felicity Huffman – love it.

    • akprincess72

Where is Felicity’s dress from?  I love it!

      • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I want to know that, too.  Gorgeous dress – she definitely wins this round!

  • Karen Maslowski

You guys, enough with the hate for the nude shoes. The reason women wear them is so their legs look longer.

Some gals just need that extra visual, ya know?

I think that’s the best I’ve ever seen Felicity Huffman look.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Elaine-Lang/100000366510311 Elaine Lang

But…they are boring, ugly, and in my humble opinion, don’t make the leg look longer so much as make one look as though one does not have feet.

      • ecallaw1977

I disagree.  I think the reason most people wear them is because it’s a neutral and they don’t want to take any risks.  And I hate them, so I think T&Lo need to use their platform to shun them as much as possible.

ETA–This was intended to be a response to Karen. I agree with Elaine!

    • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

Ashley Greene doesn’t need the help and JLH is wearing a floor length dress.

      • Nelliebelle1197

You guys, please continue to hate on the nude-if-you-are-a-white-person shoes. They are hideous and don’t make anyone’s legs look longer. Oh yeah, thanks for calling them Silly Putty instead of nude.

        • TropiCarla

“Oh yeah, thanks for calling them Silly Putty instead of nude.”

THIS! My nude foot is nowhere close to that color. The whole “nude-if-you-are-a-white-person” thing is more than a little obnoxious.

          • Nelliebelle1197

I am as white as can be but that has ALWAYS bothered me, even when I was a kid. It just didn’t make sense that one color “nude” or “flesh” could fit the whole range of us! I frankly find it paternalistic and offensive

    • librarygrrl64

A neutral shoe isn’t always bad, especially with a red dress (which is when I wear them), but the Silly-Putty-colored, patent, platform clodhopper is an abomination. It always looks cheap and heavy, IMO.

    • librarygrrl64

      • librarygrrl64

And a pointy toe will elongate the leg as well. The ones TLo usually pick on are rounded or peep-toe.

        • mshesterp

The rounded silly putty peep toe platform SHOULD HAVE ITS OWN CORNER OF HELL.  God, I hate those naty things.

      • Wellworn

Like clubfoot.  And my apologies to anyone who has it, but why have it on purpose?

        • librarygrrl64

          Agreed.

    • sweetestsith

That only really works (imho) if the shoes are dainty, otherwise it just gives the ladies awkward feet. The simple non-platform nude shoes can look lovely in real life (on real people), but the endless stream of nude platforms on the red carpet just looks like lazy styling. Hence all the hate.

I’m now going to contradict myself by saying I don’t mind them on Ashley Green. ;) JLH looks silly though, some pretty tan wedges would have looked better.

    • MilaXX

That’s as much of a myth as the belt on the narrow part of the body & black is slimming.

    • PastryGoddess

These women have stylists who are paid lots and lots of money to help them present a certain image to the world.  Nude/Silly Putty Shoes are giving up.  They are saying that I have no idea how to best accessorize this outfit so I’m just going to go with the safe choice and do a non color.

If I am dressing myself, yeah, I’ll thrown on some silly putty shoes, because I really may not know how to accessorize my outfit.  However,if I am handing over bucketfuls of cash to someone to dress me, silly putty office pumps are not what I want to see as part of that package.

Can I also say that Jen Garner is dressed by Rachel Zoe, she is wearing beige shoes, and they are NOT shoes that that Amber the law office intern in Kansas wears to work.  They may be ugly, but at least they have some kind of design and edge to them.

*no offense to Ambers, law offices, interns, or Kansas intended*

      • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

Oh well here you go saying what I was trying to say before I even said it.  Heh.

No. The hate will never end.  Why? because the reason women wear them is because they don’t know how to accessorize.  And considering these particular women pay someone to accessorize for them, there is no excuse.  So if they want to waste their money paying a professional stylist who doesn’t know how to pair a shoe to an outfit, we the people reserve the right to judge them for their poor taste.
I maintain my tight-lipped indignance against boring/ugly/dumb shoes.  Terrible clothes are one thing, but terrible shoes are a crime I cannot abide silently.

  • gabbilevy

I’m normally willing to forgive when the bustier ladies have their tops a little too tight (trust me, clothes simply aren’t made for women with a 3:1 boobs to waist ratio), but Paula’s poor girls are screaming from all the torture her dress is subjecting them to. From her posture, it looks like she’s not capable of moving her arms an inch or twisting her torso even the tiniest bit.

  • Call me Bee

Katherine H looks so fresh and beautiful, why oh why ruin your look with support hose?
Lots of too-tigh dresses here, and then there’s JLH playing Maude.  Yikes–ugly color, ugly dress.

    Felicity FTW!!

    • librarygrrl64

Yeah, those hose are a head-scratcher. So matronly!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Felicity takes it. She looks amazing.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

it’s a great dress. i’m curious who made it.
just like the one beneath [also a great dress if it didnt have that PR™ exposed zipper], it’s not faring all that well against the background. too bad.
not that i dont hate the background, i always hate the background. i think about half of us here, maybe more, actually remember when we werent continually besieged by advertising. believe it or not, once upon a long long ago, the backdrops for this stuff were clean. damn. wasnt the future supposed to be better? anyway.

anyway. why is happy ending hewitt, there, dressed like a day glo missionary? no pun intended, of course. at least not in the second half of that statement.

      edited to add:
ps. am i the only one seeing the gadawfully inappropriate tarantula grasping the front of that purple dress? i mean, it’s either clinging or nursing. maybe that.

      • Anathema_Device

It looks like a Carolina Herrera to me. Similar to this strapless one with red print (sorry for the itsy bitsy thumbnail here):
        http://s5.thisnext.com/media/largest_dimension/C777DB23.jpg

“not that i dont hate the background, i always hate the background. i think about half of us here, maybe more, actually remember when we werent continually besieged by advertising. believe it or not, once upon a long long ago, the backdrops for this stuff were clean.”

I said elsewhere that I really appreciate this backdrop because since the advent of non-stop adverts–and that’s not going to stop anytime soon–most backdrop are as gaudy as a circus tent. This one is fairly restrained. It doesn’t compete with the clothes, although J Garner probably wishes she was in one of her recent red outfits.

Since the backdrop has to be designed and produced well in advance, isn’t there a way for stylists to get that information from the sponsor of the event?

    • curiouserandcuriousest

Agreed! The detail in that print is gorgeous.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clydette-Wantland/673315286 Clydette Wantland

Jennifer’s dress is the color of mud.  Yuk.

  • nannypoo

The color of Jennifer Love Hewitt’s dress could not possibly be worse for her. The dress is already unflattering in every way, but when you put her in that color, with that sad hair and that pitiful makeup job, she’s just tragic.

    • ecallaw1977

That color combined with that makeup make her look like she has the plague.

      • snarkmeister

^^ This ^^  I thought maybe she had contracted a rare uncurable disease.  She looks rather like a zombie.

      • librarygrrl64

Seriously. She looks sweaty and jaundiced.

        • No_Sew

OH, now the robe makes sense.  She just came over from the hospital, so she threw on a robe.  I knew there must be an explanation.

          • librarygrrl64

            Hahaha! Nasty. But true.

      • kimmeister

What the heck is going on with her eyeliner on the bottom lid?  Yikes!

    • Kayceed

She looks like the backup singer in most any ’70s variety show.

    • Ceur

I think it would look smashing on Solange Knowles. She has the right skintone and attitude and her natural hair is anything but sad!

  • Lisa Dugan

Felicity Huffman looks great. Ashley Greene does as well but it’s a smidge too tight all around.  I like Jennifer Garner’s dress but I hate the shoes.

  • Patricia Gillett

Someone needs to slip Katherine H the number of a good make-up person.

  • SapphoPoet

Felicity Huffman FTW. I love her watch with that dress.

  • Catiline

My boobs hurt just looking at Paula Patton’s top.  Jennifer Love Hewitt looks like she just stumbled out of the hospital.

  • ballerinawithagun

Love the Felicity Huffman dress! Perfect asymmetric placement of the applique/print. Anyone have more info? She looks wonderful, beautiful but her age! Maybe just a little more lip color.

    • sweetestsith

I would also like to know who made it, even though I already know I can’t afford it. She looks AWESOME, a little lip color & contrasting shoes (even subtle, like dark purple/green/burgundy) would have made it a werq in my book.

  • iheartbuffy

Very little here says “powerful woman”, and the RC, as T Lo has told us, is about knowing the event: It’s mostly “boring” (Heigl, Paulson, Huffman) or “too damn tight” (Greene and Patton– shame about Patton because it is a neat dress and could be perfect for the event but it’s pretty clear she was walking like she was in a kimono and gasping for breath throughout the afternoon).

Garner’s dress has a lot of potential. The design on the back is really interesting– with the exception of the exposed zipper– but the muted color hinders it from being all it could be. Turn that muted army green into a kelly green or a blue that really works for JG and then she’d really have something.

Hewitt’s dress is also really bold and I especially like that she ISN’T showing a lot of skin in such a bright color. Accessories, hair and make up all call for significant improvement but it’s certainly unique and I believe event appropriate.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

The venues should let everyone know what the backdrop will be. Some of these ladies look washed out or blend with the backdrop.

    • anotherkate

Yeah, why don’t they do that? I’m actually kind of shocked that no diva has thrown a hissy fit and required her stylists to find out ahead of time anyway. I doubt it would be hard, since I’m sure the event has their backdrop designed well in advance. For once I actually *like* the neutrality and (relative) classiness of this particular backdrop, but if I were Jennifer Garner I would have wanted to know so I didn’t blend in.

  • l_c_ann

About Jennifer Garner’s back view.  I love the look on her face that all but screams “Isn’t this the most overdone rear view you’ve seen?”

Then I thought about the pattern that all those seams are going to leave on her legs after sitting through a lunch with speaches.

Good thing she’s got a sense of humor.

  • Julie Carlson

All Jennifer L-H needs is a turban to complete that look.

  • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

Felicity Huffman looks absolutely amazing. That might be a personal best for her. As for Ashley Greene, I’m less concerned about the verging-on-babyheads than the Ken Doll Bump. Size up, honey. You’ll still look hot.

  • MoHub

    Felicity Huffman FTW!

  • Anathema_Device

Hewitt’s dress is an awful color on her. She looks the Evil Jaundice Queen, coming to steal my liver. Garner’s is a bad color on her, too.

Huffman for the win in my book. But I do like that last dress more than you do, even though it is a touch young for Paulson.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

Two too  many pubic mounds.. Ashley & Paula.  UGH>

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I wonder what Katherine Heigl’s hose looked like in person. They look absolutely atrocious in photos, so I am wondering if she didn’t anticipate the flash effect, which truly makes it look like she’s wearing thick support hose.

  • schadenfreudelicious

do Jennifer Garner’s shoes have turned up toes?? one’s that also apparently match the carpet (or perhaps its just a reflection)..such an unfortunate color palate for both her and the backdrop…..

    • kimmeister

Yes, and they are obscenely ugly at that.

      • schadenfreudelicious

they look like a macrame hoof…

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

J-Hew’s makeup is making her look like she’s been crying for hours. I want to steal Mrs. Filliam H. Muffman’s dress.

On an unrelated note, did TLo go see Looper? Any thoughts?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_USL26YJKMOXWSKB4WFPLWAFCGU Vera Lucksted

Jennifer Love Hewitt needs a tray of roumaki and a backgammon set.
    Love Huffman’s dress!

    • alyce1213

I just read your comment after posting mine.  Perfect — roumaki and backgammon!

  • Nice_Shirt

Felicity Huffman looks 15 years younger than last I saw her.  I don’t know if she got a new stylist, some discreet facial work, or has just been on R&R since Desperate Housewives wrapped.  But whatever she’s doing, it’s working for her.

Edited to add: In that dress, with the longer, darker hair, I first took her for Sheryl Crow. Anybody else see it?

    • kimmeister

I see the resemblance, now that you point it out.

  • MissMariRose

The exposed zipper ruins that Givenchy dress. When will designer sober up and recognize that those zippers are wildly unattractive?

  • alyce1213

That Roland Mouret seems to be the dress of choice for so many. She looks nice in the red, but it’s too tight.
Jennifer Garner’s dress is businesslike and tasteful, but also heavy-looking and drab. Hate the exposed zipper.
Jennifer Love Hewitt is dressed like a Palm Springs dowager, something I thought I’d never see from Ms. Boobalicious, not even 40 years from now.
Katherine Heigl’s stockings are just ridiculous — and I like hosiery.
Paula Patton — oh I can’t, already. I’ve really had it with too-tight dresses. Are they all crazy?
    Felicity Huffman FTW.

  • librarygrrl64

JLH looks AWFUL. Either she cannot carry off that color, or her makeup artist is color-blind.

  • Wendi126

I wonder if JLH meant to look like she was leaving a key party in 1974 having taken too many Seconal

  • MilaXX

Ashley Greene  – Looks great, hate the shoes
Dana Ramirez – Nice dress, makeup needs work
Felicity Huffman = Looks fabulous. LOVE her dress.
Jennifer Garner – I like the dress from the front but the back is too busy & that exposed zipper is hiddy. The shoes deserved to be burned.
Jennifer Love Hewitt – Looks like a yellow schmatta. She need better makeup, a belt and some blingKatherine Heigl – She looks okay from the knees up, but the brown shoes and taupe hose need to go Sheer black nylons and a different shoe would have been better
Paula Patton – This would have been a home run if she had gone up a size
Sarah Paulson – This is incredibly unflattering on her. The color washes her out and the shape of the skirt is giving her chicken legs. The silly putty shoes don’t help matters.

    • kimmeister

I like the way the straps on Dana’s shoes mirror the piping on the dress, but that blush is just overkill!

  • Wellworn

A dress is too tight when we can see your good china through the fabric.  I’m talking to you, Paula and Ashley.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

    Felicity Huffman wins this one!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

As usual Mrs. Heigl is dressing like a senior citizen.  There really should be a law against hose with open toed shoes. Also, my thick ass dance tights looked like that–which was so all of our legs were the same color.  Mrs. Hewitt’s dress is an odd length, its’ just not working for her, even with some better accessories, I don’t think it’s her dress.  Mrs. Patton, oh I adore her, but damn hire a stylist.

  • EEKstl

What is with all the nude shoes???  The only ones that have any interest at all are Jennifer Garner’s. The hose on Katherine Heigl is bewildering.

  • No_Sew

    TLo,
that is NOT Jennifer Love Hewitt’s nightgown.  How mean you are!  You know that is her robe.

  • PastryGoddess

OMG Nude Colored Hose on the Red Carpet Heigl…are you frickin’ kidding me!  Even my Grandma, who would have loved JHew’s caftan knows better than that.

    Felicity FTW
    2nd place to Ashley.
The rest of these ladystars have to fight it out for the rest of the places

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

This group runs the gamut from mega hiddy to meh.

  • Judy_J

I am so very tired of the exposed zipper.  So….very….tired……

  • Judy_J

I am so very tired of the exposed zipper.  So….very….tired……

  • Cathy S

    Felicity for the win! Fabulous.

  • frankystein123

Ms. Greene, pulling off the sexy yet aloof brunette look quite nicely, tragic shoes though; Ms. Huffman, eye-catching yet classy; Ms. Patton, someone gets her some much needed O2(g) please.

  • Qitkat

JLH, I made this dress from a Simplicity pattern in 1966, in three hours. It is not a dressy dress. But mine didn’t look like a nightgown like yours.

    • Dagney

lol!!!! Awesome comment.  And I believe you too.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Jennifer Love Hewitt looks like she is 5 years old and took her mom’s – or hell her grandmother’s cocktail dress from the Gerald Ford Inauguration Ball and decided to play dress up in it.  Someone needs to shout mean things at her for that.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

  • Dagney

Poor Ms Hewitt.  With a little bit, and I mean just a little bit of actual styling, she could have pulled off a killer 70′s look.

  • Dagney

Our father who art in heaven, STRIKE AWAY the nude hose that Katherine Heigl is wearing with those peep toe shoes.  That is sick and wrong.

  • msdamselfly

Jennifer Garner looks elegant and European

  • http://riley-merrick.livejournal.com/ JP aka Riley

Oh my gods, PLEASE someone MAKE THE NUDE SHOES STOP!

Maybe we can form a vigilante group to destroy all nude shoes so starlets will have no choice but to wear something else?

Felicity Huffman looks awesome and Jennifer Love Hewitt looks like she got off her death bed to attend.

  • Candigirl1968

Jennifer LH’s shoes make me want to scratch my eyes out, but the color is very flattering – she should wear more yellow.

  • lucasuk82

How did JLH not see this color makes her look ill?  Maybe part of it is that she’s not wearing her usual 1″ fake lashes, but I don’t think Mono Chic is going to be the new Heroin Chic.

  • MarinaCat

Jennifer Garner’s hemline coupled with the ankle straps make her look stumpy to me, and it’s the second time I’ve seen this recently with her. Just-below-the-knew with ankle straps are is not her friend.

  • quiltrx

Felicity FTW!  That dress is KILLER, and very good on her.

I kind of hate that the beautiful seaming on Garner’s is where it’s just going to be sat on most of the time.  And that zipper…geez, can we make this trend go away.  It just looks like people don’t know how to put in a zipper anymore…any cow can topstitch one on (well, except Anya….BAM!).

  • AnneElliot

Jennifer Love Hewitt looks like a neon sister-wife.

  • http://raistlinsama.livejournal.com/ Raistlinsama

Ashley: great dress, horrible, HORRIBLE shoes.
    Dania: cute.
Felicity: she looks fantastic! I love everything!
Jennifer G.: that zipper is a serious mistake in an overall good dress. I can’t stop thinking that the had the dress inside out when they put the zipper in!
    Jennifer L.H.: yellow nightgown.
Katherine: nothing exceptional, but it’s a good look for her.
Paula: this would be GREAT, if her boobs weren’t trying to escape it from the front. I’m reminded of giant femle robots in ’70s Japan animation (Oppai Missiles!)
    Sarah: boooring!

  • Allison Woods

Felicity Huffman, yes, Jennifer Garner, no.

What is that back zipper gimmick? like 5 seasons old, or what?

  • neofashionista

i absolutely love Ashley greene’s Bitchface in this damn she is giving good face, makes her relatively boring dress pop
