WERQ (x2): Selena Gomez

Posted on September 06, 2012

That we are giving Selena Gomez a WERQ is notable enough, because sweet as she is, we’d never peg her for the “When this stiletto hits the carpet, get the fuck out of my way” type. That we are giving her TWO WERQs has us a little concerned about the apocalypse.

But we can you blame us? Baby is WERQing here!

WERQ #1:

Selena Gomez attends ‘Spring Breakers’ photocall during the 69th Venice Film Festival in a Dolce&Gabbana dress paired with Jimmy Choo sandal and Melinda Maria earrings.

What really put this in the WERQ column for us is the fact that we’re sick to death of these Dolce & Gabbana black lace dresses and yet she’s making this one look like it was made just for her. Love the hair and makeup, and LOVE the shoes.

But if you act now, we’ll throw in a SECOND WERQ for the low, low price of whatever the hell this Versace gown costs!

WERQ #2:

Selena Gomez attends ‘Spring Breakers’ premiere during the 69th Venice Film Festival in an Atelier Versace gown paired with Sergio Rossi heels, a Judith Leiber clutch and Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

Ooh, honey. You’re having a really good week. Can we stand next to you for a minute and soak some of that fabulous up? It’s good for the skin.

  • Very nice. The second one isn’t as awesome, but she’s making the model look bad. Good for her.

    • Sobaika

Agreed – the D&G is stop-in-your-tracks fantastic. The Atelier Versace is lovely, but I don’t love light blush tones on her coloring. Maybe I would appreciate it more if I saw it first.

      But the D&G! W E R Q

      • No kidding. I actually said “oh my god” when I saw it.  I wondered if there would be anyone, besides Monica Bellucci, who could pull the D&G old world dresses off, and we found our gal!  She looks beautiful.  I’ll bet her little cabin boy/girl popped an eyeball when he saw her.

    • Qitkat

That is such odd flat lighting on the model that she looks like a barbie doll.
Selena is lovely in both looks, but my personal take is that they are both a little mature for her.

  • I am mighty impressed, I must say, not only does she look glam as hell, which is not normally her gig, but those clothes have been properly fitted to her frame, hemmed correctly, and the perfect accessories have been found.  Whoever her style team is, they need to be on long term contract.

    •  I think the second dress could have been hemmed a bit in the front. It’s a bit long and I worry that she’s going to trip. Also, she needs to stand up straight, although she may be nervous about the top sliding down. But still. Stand up straight, honey. That’s a fabulous dress and you look amazing in it.

Thank god one of her accessories wasn’t Justin Beiber.

      •  In the first shot, she’s standing erect, and the hem of the dress clears the floor by roughly a half inch, perfect for this dress. The last shot, she is leaning slightly forward, and the hem is puddling a bit in front.  That sideways fish tail is clearly supposed to be a dust dragger, as its just the same on the model.  And you are Sooooooo right that she left the emphatically underwhelming Mr Beiber, out in the limo, with is iPad, so he can play games while she goes and does Star Stuff.

        • ballerinawithagun

The hem is puddling on the model.

          •  Wow, so it is. All the more reason that it is wise to have shortened it for La Gomez, so she doesn’t fall over trying to walk.

        • Meg0GayGuys6

I was thinking the same thing- the dress is perfectly hemmed. It looks far better tailored on Selena than the model.

And I hope she kicks her boy to the curb with those FAB Jimmy Choo sandals.

          •  Trust me, in 20 years, Selena will still have an active career, and we’ll all be saying, Justin who?

    • Vanja

I noticed the great fit and hems as well, but I long to see something different/out of the box on the red carpet. I also need more Tilda ‘Bow Down’ Swinton.

      •  And more cray cray from HBC!

        • Vanja

and also from Grace ‘I invented cray’ Jones.

  • formerlyAnon

    Man, she is transcending.

I’ve always thought those D&G dresses made everyone look a bit like a late-middle-aged Italian widow on the stroll who’d gotten hold of some tragic upholstery material. NOW I know that I’ve just never seen one of ’em on a sweet young thing who could project enough dewy loveliness.

The second is a beautifully fitted and draped dress ruined by the Versace penchant for too much in a tacky way – and again – she effing TRANSCENDS, and brings the dress with her.

    • ballerinawithagun

The “Italian widow” has always been acknowledged by D&G as one of their main inspirations.

      • YoungSally

I love their Italian widow…but this look seems more inspired by de Medici fabulousness.

  • CupcakeKate

Has the model in the Atelier Versace gown has been photoshopped to have the figure of a Barbie doll?

Selena Gomez looks so much healthier and happier, especially in the D&G dress.

    • lalagigi

I actually thought it was a mannequin at first glance.

      • SapphoPoet

        I did, too.

      • MoHub

         Moi aussi.

    •  that was my very first thought.  Sure she’s a twig, but this looks like some serious digital adjustment.  Unless they have corseted the hell out of her. I don’t recall the collection having been shown with corsets, though it sure wouldn’t surprise me.  We ARE talking about Donatella, after all.

      • formerlyAnon

If she is wearing a corset it’s a great one. There’s no hint of serious undergarments under that form fitting dress.

Of course, they can photoshop out wrinkles and visible seams as easily as her actual waistline, so who knows?

        •  I honestly wonder at the point of showing a garment in a manner that it will never EVER be able to be seen, because no one on earth actually looks like that.  Sure, fantasy is great, but I want to come away with some concept of the wearability of a garment.

      • Corsetmaker

My guess is that the model’s version has an inner corset to support the hip drape. There are ways of hiding the seamlines easily enough with an interlining between the corset and the dress fabric. Or it could be a powernet corselette that’s fairly smooth. To me the red carpet version looks too floppy and straight on the waist to set off the drape and the whole dress looks like it’s slipping down, possible because the drape is relying on the bust to hold it up rather than an inner support.

    • She might just be wearing different foundation garments. Audrey Hepburn has a figure like that in many of her films.

    • sweetestsith

It looks to me like the model has a very thin yet curvy shape, and they combined that with well placed shadows and a bit of photoshop. While the side lines of her torso are corset shaped it’s pretty hard to corset down super thin girls very much, so I’m inclined to think its mostly magic.

      • Corsetmaker

You can corset a thin girl down pretty far if they’ve got a big gap between the ribs and the pelvis. But it really isn’t all that much, maybe a couple of inches. Hard to know without seeing how straight or hourglass she is naturally. But I’d expect a dress with a drape like that to have some support at the waist whereas Gomez’s version doesn’t appear to have any.

        • sweetestsith

That’s fair, I haven’t made corsets outside my friend group in years and I forget the obvious sometimes.

It looks like there is some built in support (not even a tiny wrinkle on the torso), but nothing shaping imho.

  • annie_wonder

LOVE the first one. Those shoes are amazing.
The second one is a bit too booby for me, but she still looks better than the model.

  • As good as the dresses are, and how natural she seems to be to wear them, the secret for me, specially in the D&G is the hair and makeup: instead of the usual “cheeky teen star” thing, she serving a new found maturity that really shines.

    • call_me_schmeg

for real. babysnaps for knowing when to drop the teen-y trends and let some straight up i’m-young-and-beautiful shine through.

  • AzSportsGirl

The Versace proves that a strapless gown can be worn without cutlet boob, side boob, uniboob, or without appearing in danger of flash boob.

Well done whoever fitted that for her.

  • SapphoPoet

Such different looks and she’s selling them both.

In the picture of the D&G collection, I really like the dress (front row, far right) with the square neckline and the gold lace bootie sock thingies (the technical term). Sort of a modern Renaissance look.

The model in the Versace dress looks like they over-Photoshopped her waist; she looks very odd.

  • SewingSiren

Absolutely love the first look. She is looking like a modern day painting by Velazquez or Goya. The second also lovely, and in both cases better than the models.

  • Wow!  Nailed it.

  • MissAnnieRN

She looks amazing. Full stop. The only minor quibble I have is with the pink Versace-I don’t like the way the light reflects off the boobs. It cheapens the dress. But she is indeed werq worthy. Love those black sandals with the D&G dress!

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Whoa – those are some seriously great dresses for a teen star promoting a film called “Spring Breakers”??  Ok.  Whatev’s.  It must be fun to play dress up this way – gorgeous!!

  • kikisayshi

As gorgeous as that D&G dress is, it adds a good 10 to 15 years to her appearance. She is barely out of her tweens and should be having more fun than serious glamour. With that aside, she looks FABULOUS in both ensembles. Just sayin’.

    • alyce1213

Agree. If only we could time travel and see her at age 35 in these dresses, with maturity in her face and the confidence that comes with it.
They are amazing dresses and they fit her beautifully, but they are a little old for her.  Nonetheless . . .  gorgeous.

  • Selena looks amazing. I always thought she was a cut above most other Disney starlets.

  • I dunno, maybe it’s the baby face, but she looks like child playing dress up to me.

    • Le_Sigh

Me too!  I’m thankful she’s not a hot mess, but that’s my gut reaction probably 9 out of 10 times I see her photographed.

    • Kristin McNamara

I think it’s worth mentioning that Selena is not even two years younger than Jennifer Lawrence, whom we’re always critiquing on this site without the slightest mention of age, maturity, “body not being fully matured yet,” etc. as so many commenters on this thread have today. She’s a full 20 years old now, kittens…..

  • Kappyapp

wow – they look like they were custom made for her

  • Larkin21

That first look is amazing but she is just stunning in the second dress. Well done, girl.

  • ballerinawithagun

Wow! She is maturing very nicely. Fabulous dresses and she is absolutely stunning. Her skin tone is perfect with the Versace, which would have washed out anyone with a pale complexion. She may become a real star after all.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Someone just upped her game. At least she’s makes a classier Britney in this generation’s Britney/Justin pairing.

  • gabbilevy

Well shut my mouth, Miz Selena Gomez. Never would have predicted this. Second dress borders on being too much dress for her tiny little figure, and I think she could own it a bit more, but it’s beautiful and the first dress is perfection. Hair and makeup look great in both, but again, the first dress edges the second. Either way, they’re both winners.

  • Judy_J

Oh..my..goodness….I stand in awe.  Both looks are fabulous, and she actually looks her age, not like a 12 year old playing dress-up.  Whoever is styling her needs a hefty raise in pay.

  • PeggyOC

The only accessory of hers that doesn’t fit is the Bieber.  Why is she still hanging around with that no-talent junior douche?

  • janetjb

  • unbornfawn

She looks gorgeous. These are fabulous dresses and she is wearing them well. My quibble is that she still isn’t yet woman enough to fully pull these off.

  • nannypoo

The vision of that horde of models in black and gold lace tromping down the runway will surely give me nightmares. Thanks a lot, TLo. On the other hand, she looks gorgeous in both of these dresses.

  • Judih1

I love the first dress but think it looks a litte “mature” for her. Would have like to see her wear one of the shorter dresses in the collection – or maybe even the shorts! But can’t deny that this is a personal best for her.

I like the second one better (but hate the hair) because the blush color is in the pink family, which is a good color for a girl her age.

Guess her star stature went up a notch if she is getting access to clothes by these designers!

  • This is a well-deserved honor if only because that hem length on the D&G dress is nigh impossible to pull off.

  • Miss_Magpie

The thing that makes the D&G pop so hard is she KNOWS she looks great and is owning it. In the Versace, she is worried abut her lady bits bopping out, so her confidence level isn’t quite as high. Still, baby snaps all around!

  • Melissa Brogan

That first ensemble. Snaps, girl. Those shoes were the perfect choice, too.

  • mjude

she is a pretty little thing

  • I wish she would have stood up straight in the second dress. She looks a little uncomfortable in the second set but she looks great in both of them.

  • Corazon Nunez

I really think she’s just not comfortable wearing boob-baring clothing. So, love the black, eh on the pink.

  • I absolutely love the first one! I like the second one too. But the first one is so beautiful!

  • clairellis

Damn girl is WERQing the SHIt outta those dresses! Fabulous!

  • Kyle Crawford

No – a very rare total disagree. Beautiful dresses – that she is MUCH to young to pull off, looks like she is playing dress up – and not in a good way.

    • l_c_ann

When I saw her in the beautiful black number, my first thought was she’s too young.  That dress belongs on a married (very, very rich) Spanish Matron.

The second is also a style for a mature body, which she doesn’t have yet.  She’s got a good body for her age, but it would take an industrial strength corset to get the waist line that the runway model has (and SG hopefully will avoid that like the plague.)

    • Judy_S

I agree. The dresses look wonderful on her–I prefer the Versace on her body instead of on the model’s Barbie-bod–but there is a dissonance in the first between the baby face and the sophisticated dress, while in the second she just looks uncomfortable. Uncomfortable does not equal WERQ.

  • TheOriginalLulu

That Dolce is fabulous. I’m drooling. She looks gorgeous.
The Versace looks amazing on her too, good color on her and it fits her like a dream.

  • yulaffin

She’s gorgeous – drop dead gorgeous in the D & G.  I would love to see the second one in red.  I think that color would suit her better.

  • Anathema_Device

Holy Disney Princess! She looks great. I love seeing a child star figure out that transition to adult dressing. She looks freakin’ amazing in both of these dresses.

  • Haha I can see where they patched the Versace to get rid of the cutout. She looks great in both, but she needs a little more “Everyone wants to be me or fuck me” attitude. That’ll probably come with experience.

  • Fibercrazed

They both fit her beautifully. She looks amazing. (Though I wish she hadn’t done the “I gotta pee” thing.)

  • Clueless_Jock

She’s a beautiful young girl. These dresses are too heavy and mature for her.

  • PinkLemon

that versace looks a bit…..dated to me.

  • MilaXX

LOVE both looks.  Kudos to her. In the first look she is not only making a lace dress WERQ, but she is making a lace dress at a length that is often difficult to pull off look good. The second look is notable because she look 6 ft tall in that dress. Love the hair, makeup & accessories in both pics.

  • Dear Selena,

Girl, that black lace number is not your dress. It’s MY dress. Please send it back immediately.

(In seriousness, I think the first dress belongs on someone a bit older — but the second one is phenomenal.)

  • BazoDee

OMG -I gay gasped and I’m not even gay!! WERQ it sista! Breathtaking!
And she’s wearing those Jimmy Choo sandals that we thought we’d gotten tired of seeing but they are perfection with that DG dress.

  • BAM!!!! that reminds me to Alexis Mateo BAM!!! and yeah, the bitch looks amazing!!!

  • kimmeister

Dear Selena, thank you for deploying sheer without declaring to the world whether you are commando or not.

Also, from what I can see of it, your bracelet in the second ensemble is gorgeous.

  • Did she make Justin Bieber walk 12 feet behind her?

  • AudreysMom

the only thing Selena needs in both of these looks is more confidence.

    • mountainFashionista

I agree — her body language isn’t WERQ-worthy in either outfit, even though she looks lovely in both.

To me, her crossed legs, stiff arms & hands all say “I’m not sure I’m quite ready to wear these in public, but here I am anyway!”

  • The D&G dress is KILLA! I really liked the Versace when TLo teased it on Twitter yesterday, but it pales in comparison to the D&G. But Brava, Selena/Selena’s stylists. Two outstanding outfits.

  • Kayceed

    Baby girl looks fab.u.lous.

  • WERQitspice

An arousing BRAVA for the D&G dress!! She looks amazing head to toe. I personally prefer the model in the Versace; the contrast of the model’s severe look and softness of the dress WERQ for me

  • Jacquez Preposterice

she’s so cute and dimply that I never would have thought she could slam such dramatic looks right out of the ballpark.  and yet!

  • pookiesmom

She looks fab but my god, the waist on that Versace model is freaking unnatural! Whether it comes from Photoshop or a rib-cracking corset or a combination of the two, she looks like a silly putty figurine that’s been stretched out vertically at the waist and is about to topple over. Creepy!!!

  • guest2visits

Two little things; first, I love how the first dress makes her so long and lean.  Wish it wasn’t the see-through-skirt variety,
but it has fairly nice ‘under’ skirt behind it, which is not too bad looking.   She looks beautiful in it, too.
Next; the ballgown style dress is also beautiful, but I think her hair would have been more suitable in a low, loose, trendy bun, –
the dress needed a more formal hair style.  Otherwise, it’s too much like a pretty little girl in a grown-up’s dress.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Honestly? I’m not thrilled with either look.  The black lace D&G is gorgeous, but I think it is too mature for her.  And while the Versace is beautiful, I don’t think the color suits her.

    • PinkLemon

       I don’t think that color suits anybody….

  • Monabel

Agreed, but can’t quite love the shiny pink pleather boobs.

  • Carla_Charlton

The first dress really fits her well and looks great, although to my taste it’s a little old for her.  The second dress is meh — the neutral tone is done to death and the side piece overwhelms her. And my first reaction to both dresses was that they seem like way too much for the opening of a movie called “Spring Breakers,” even if it is the Venice Film Festival.  However, I don’t know anything about the movie and maybe it’s more interesting than it sounds.

  • sk8tfan

And a double BAM for the D&G dress because it’s lined, instead of that idiotic lace over granny pants style the designers keep trying to ram down our throats.

  • TieDye64

She’s especially killing it in the D&G. Brava.

  • She looks so grown up in the D&G! I admit, I’ve always liked her, and I’m gad she’s turning out so well.
The Versace model is horribly thin. I’m concerned.

  • girliecue

Goodness! Looks like Lorenzo and Tom aren’t the only ones to have ARRIVED this week. Best table in the house for Miss Gomez from now on.

  • Snailstsichr

I love that she’s wearing the D & G in Venice. What a perfect fit for the city.

  • Wellworn

How small is that Versace model’s waist?  Did she have some ribs removed?

  • But, the hair…

  • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks striking, no argument! From some of her interviews, it’s pretty clear that she’s into fashion and may someday work her way to Ph.D.-level dress-wearer.

I would love to see Florence Welch in that Dolce and Gabbana, though. Tall enough to make it sing and the contrast with her ultra-fair complexion would be striking. She looks great in black-and-gold. I wish she’d have a Jeanne d’Arc phase.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m just going on record as liking Ms. Gomez’ WERQ in the Versace more than the D&G, but then I suffer from Versace lust.

  • Trisha26

She’s very cute. The first look is elegant, maybe a little too sophisticated for her age (20) & personality. The second dress is just too much. It’s amazing, but my first thought was why is there a bedspread attached to her hip? Hate the messy hair in both looks.

  • ASK26

it is not so much an accomplishment when it does work. Rich thin pretty and access to super expensive pretty clothes. Big accomplishment. The accomplishment is when regular people with less than ideal shapes, looks and bank accounts WERQ . She does look fantastic ….

    • granddelusion

      True story.

  • TomBord

    Play dress-up too much baby-girl ?

Come back when you’re at least 22, girly…… cuz doze are Yo- Mama’s clothes.

  • Laylalola

Way too old for her, look like outfits she should wear 30 years from now.

  • Allison Woods

The first one makes her look old, but I love the second one.

  • jmorino08

Both dresses *should* be too mature for her, but she’s pulling them off magnificently! Brava chica!!

  • Jennifer Coleman

She does deserve the WERQs but she makes me uncomfortable being this mature because my 10 year old son clearly has the hots for her.

  • granddelusion

I’m sorry, that face just does not go with that black dress. And the posture is so not werqing it. The pink dress is gorgeous, but, again, she seems a little young for it.

  • granddelusion

And that Barbie model in the pink dress is very scary. At first glance, I thought she was plastic!

  • jw_ny

Lovely in each!  So nice to see a young starlette get it right…so right!  🙂

  • TheDivineMissAnn

OH. SNAP. (x2)  Ms. Gomez AND the dresses look fab.  Absolutely fab.

  • quiltrx

Wow–girl is turning that shit OUT in Venice!  She took that opportunity and ran with it, with fabulosity.  Great job, young one.

  • Candigirl1968

Especially with the D&G, Gomez has managed to look grownup and interesting without looking like she’s in her mother’s dress.  Snaps!

  • Lexie

LOVE that first look. So hot.

  • Corsetmaker

The first is, yes maybe a touch old for her, but I like it. And the shoes are just perfect with it! The curves of the straps echoes those baroque curves in the goldwork very subtly but just a fantastic choice.

The second dress I love on the model but on her it lacks the firmness and the nip on the waist to balance the hip drape. It still looks fabulous, but it looks like it’s slipping down slightly. I wonder if there’s been an inner corselette that’s been dispensed with on her, and so the lack of support for the drape at the waist is forcing the bustline to carry all the weight.

    • AnneElliot

I was wondering if the model had a corset for the second one — does ANYONE naturally have a waist that tiny?

      • holdmewhileimnaked

        ethel granger.

i was a little over 22″ naturally years ago. pre-corseted, post-first bouts of starvation. gotta say the results of all that were more fun than life turned out to be later.

  • Oh, lets not forget the Beeb took this little lady to da LBC to see Phish.  Further proof that there is a tear in the space/time continuum.

And if the apocalypse isn’t coming, you can at least expect the Big One.  Beverly Hills had two earthquakes this week.  One on Monday, and one this evening (Thursday).  Then last week there were two in NorCal, one in god damn OC, and then that sizable one in Costa Rica yesterday.  Pacific Ring of Fire is getting ready to tear it up.

But if you start seeing multiple Chloe alts together on the red carpet, or Paz de la Huerta fully clothed in public, then you know the end is surely near.

  • teensmom99

Great to see her dressing older (not tween-y) but avoiding pulling a Miley–in other words, older but not old.

  • EEKstl

Very impressive, though I too fear that this double SG WERQ is a clear indication of the End of Days, so it’s been a pleasure knowing you, TLo.

  • EEKstl

Very impressive, though I too fear that this double SG WERQ is a clear indication of the End of Days, so it’s been a pleasure knowing you, TLo.

  • neofashionista

love the first dress but way to old for her tweendom years

  • Love that she’s repping the Italian designers at the Venice film festival. Quirky stylist? Or just inevitable, since they have so many power players?

  • Wow!  Color me surprised!  She looks fabulous, and so grown up.

J’adore both dresses!  On her and on me!

  • LambeeBaby

She looks fabulous in both dresses, but I am partial to the D&G. She likes it and knows that she is working it. Shine baby shine.

  • …..they altered that model’s waist, right? RIGHT?!

    • holdmewhileimnaked

i’m late on this one but it’s either photoshop or a corset. corsets will do that. a millionzillion years ago i was a corset model. never looked like that, though. then again, i always had a butt. but once upon a time i was ridiculously small in the middle.
