WERQ: Solange Knowles in Rubin Singer

Posted on September 26, 2012

Miss Solange is serving up Mahogany realness.

Solange Knowles attends the amfAR Milano 2012 event during Milan Fashion Week in a Rubin Singer gown paired with Jimmy Choo sandals.

Bowing is not optional.

Y’know, we’re just gonna say it, because the poor gal gets an awful lot of online shit: we think she’s far more striking than her sister. Sure, Beyonce’s drop-dead gorgeous, but in a far more conventional way. It helps that Solange, to our way of thinking, has a much better fashion sense. Bey quite often tips over into tacky, caricature territory. Sol makes a lot of sartorial mistakes, but her underlying goal seems to be “chic,” whereas Bey’s seems to be “hot.”

  • Nailed it. I think Solange really gets fashion more than Bey as well.  Bey just thinks she can put on some crazy shit in her hot body and call it fashion, where Solange seems to get that it is so much more than that.

    • Heh..I think it’s kind of annoying to compare them…they’re both lovely, and have their own tastes. Also, Bey gets tons of online shit…

      • Its not really a comparison of them, as much as an opinion of what they each do with fashion. I do love Bey, just prefer her sister’s fashion abilities over hers.

  • i love how she dresses… most of the time. she’s unique and i love that she wears her hair more natural. i, however, am a big fan of both knowles sisters.

    • Her hair is fabulous!

    • turtleemily

      I love her hair, too.

  • minnye

LOVE this. One of the WERQ-iest WERQs ever.

    •  straight up!

    • Sobaika

It’s because she’s shellacked that she’s considered more conventionally attractive. Fucked up, no?

      • Judih1

Sad, but true. And Beyonce is “blondish” which is always considered more attractive than dark hair

        • BerlinerNYC

Which is especially ironic, because one of Beyoncé’s best looks was in her “Get Me Bodied” video, which is one of the only times she’s ever appeared with black hair (the color black, before anyone thinks I’m throwing shade!). Solange and the DC girls appear in it as well.

    • carolynmo

      I completely agree.

    • megohd

not by me! Solange is stunning. Bey is a pretty woman, but her look is tragic, IMO.

      • Lily-Rygh

I couldn’t agree more!  Bey sure has gorgeous features — TONS of natural potential —  but she could use make-up, hair, and fashion advice from her sister.  Solange’s look here is, to quote minnye, “the WORQ-iest WERQ” I’ve seen in a long time.

  • MarissaLG

  • Michael Owens

    Beautiful shoe.

  • Agreed on the Sol/Bey parallel. Also, Solange is going for a more authentic “sister” feel. Fortunately Bey has enough african american credibility to not get ripped to shreds for her straightened blond do.

    • gabbilevy

She DOES get ripped for it, though. She gets a lot of flack for looking too white or not owning her blackness enough, and a lot of it is aimed at her hair.

      • megohd

I don’t have an opinion about her “blackness,” but I do think all that hair (and its unfortunate color) do nothing for her.

    • MilaXX

No she gets ripped all the time. Not only for her weave, but also for appearing is ads and pictures where she looks “whitened”.

  • MilaXX

WERQ indeed. I dig Solange and my respect for her went up considerably when she separated from Carol’s Daughter because she didn’t agree with the direction the company was taking. Solange walks to the beat of her own drum and I like that about her.

    • Sobaika

      What happened with Carol’s Daughter?

      • MilaXX

She said she felt like the entire time she was working with them it was an uphill battle to embrace all hair types. Many have complained that as Carol’s Daughter got more popular & the company grew that they have gradually moved away from embracing natural hair and become more mainstream. Black women’s hair is an issue both in and out of the AA community. There are (what feels like) a million different factions debating over whether to be natural, weaved, wigged, searching for “curl pattern”,  length, etc… instead of just letting each other be. Her leaving Carol’s daughter in my mind as her stepping away from all of that and staying true to herself and I admire her for that.

        • lovelyivy

Well stated. I used to be able to count on Carol’s Daughter for products for my locs with no problems and little searching, but these days they make very few products for me, and the ones they have are either way overpriced or just flat out not that great. Really sad to watch a previously wonderful small business turn into a corporate machine. I understand their choices, but they just don’t make things for their former core customers anymore, and I think they will eventually pay for it as they lose their brand identity.

          • julnyes

It is the way a number of hair care brands are going … more and more processed and increasingly expensive.

        •  …I just wish women could wear their hair as they damn well want to without meaning being ascribed to it.

I understand that this is unlikely, if not completely impossible, for any number of reasons, but man, I wish it were the case.

          • MilaXX

girl preaching to the choir. It’s starting to feel like hair is the new paper bag test.

        • Judih1

thanks for that update. Seems like once Caroll’s daughter got venture capital money, they had to go in a different direction instead of true to their initial vision.

          • MilaXX

That’s the complaint of many. I remember going to their little shop in Brooklyn to buy their products years ago. I get wanting to grow and expand a business, but it dos feel like they have left their core group behind.

  • Thank you, TLo. I worship this goddess, and her album Sol-Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams is a personal fave. I have pinned her all over Pinterest and follow her on the Twitter. I will accept no shade thrown her way. Sometimes the iconoclast, the introvert, the dreamer, the oddball gets left out in the cold. Let this beautiful bird take flight. She is my spirit animal!

  • ojosazules

Athena is in the bathroom crying.

  • Shut the Eff Up!   She has brought it, worn it, told y’all all about it, and slammed that door as she walks away. And is there anyone out there right now who can rock a fro like she can?

  • Patricia Gillett

Awesome. Love that she did not wear earrings so as not to distract from her frigging righteous hair – well done! And when you can stand against a white background wearing a white dress and still look like that…dayum!

  • abfidy

The existence of the Knowles sisters is one of the great benefits of living in the present era. Forget antibiotics: look at that fabulosity!

  • Is it me or is her foundation too light?  The front of her neck and face don’t seem to match the back of her neck or shoulders.

    • Tatiana Luján

Perhaps she uses solar screen on the lighter areas.

    • kimmeister

That is often the effect of the photography flash.  In person, she might very well have all been the same color.

      • BerlinerNYC

Word. I was stuck with a passport photo for years (back before they were digital and re-takeable) that made my face look two-toned, thanks to a poorly aimed flash (that’s what I got for getting a passport photo taken at Kinko’s).

  • holzfaellen

*obeys and bows down while trying to shut his mouth*

  • gabbilevy

This is insanely amazing. WERQ. SO MUCH WERQ.

  • SistaT

I LOVE Solange.  I love that she is more than fine with being different.  As the little sister of a huge celebrity, she is always going to be compared to Beyonce.  I love that, instead of trying to compete, Solange has chosen the road of being herself and daring folks to not love it.  Well, I like it and I love it.  I think she is Fierce (with a capital F) and fly and I appreciate her beauty much more than Bey’s because she has style and even when she makes mistakes, at least they’re interesting mistakes, as opposed to Bey who I couldn’t find any more boring.

    • Solange exudes elegance and authenticity.

      The other one annoys me.

  • Ozski

Every thing about this is Out of Sight!

  • When I first saw these pictures the other day, I knew she’d be a werq. She looks great. I don’t particularly like what she’s wearing, but she has the attitude to pull it off.

  • janetjb

    So beautiful.

  • DinaSews

    Holy Crap I’m jealous.

  • MissMariRose

    Superfly. Super duper fly.

  • j_am

    Love. Her.

  • Verascity

I guess I’m in the minority on this one. It just looks drag to me. Fierce drag, but drag.

    • kaycem

in your opinion, what’s specifically saying “drag”?

  • fiestyfashionfem

I’m calling it – PERFECT.  Hair. Face. Lippy. Eye. Shoes (omfg). Jewelry.  Oh – and Dress.  In that order.  Worship. Can’t talk.

  • DAYUM. That is some super duper fabulosity right there!

  • mmc2315

The styling!  Putting that hair with that dress, it’s genius.  She makes it her own.

  • merciblahblah

Freaking FIERCE. I covet that dress.

  • anotherkate

She is so fabulous. I love that she doesn’t take fashion too seriously, and even when I think she missed it, she always at least looks FUN! In my fantasy world where I mingle with celebrities on the regular, she is the one I immediately rush to at a stuffy party, and we stand in the corner sipping free cocktails and making jokes.

  • Agree.  She is chic.

  • shirab

I am amazed at the invisible boob support. In a white backless dress, no less. Mere mortals should not attempt it.

  • Sara__B

Solange is gorgeous, and she’s is one of my favorites on the red carpet. Never boring, often stunning, and even her mistakes are worth seeing. This outfit is another winner. Well done!

  • Kayceed

She looks fantastic. And yes, Beyonce’s style definitely seems more packaged to please, while Solange’s seems much more organic and individual.

  • Totally agree with your assessment. Solange is always striving for chic and often nails it. This look is amazing.

  • Aarjullor

    Stunning! WERQ!

  • Anathema_Device

I love her hair so much. She looks very beautiful here, head to toe. Her previous looks have often struck me as trying too hard, as in trying too hard to be quirky and trying too hard to set herself apart from her sis. In this dress, she is hitting so many trends without looking trendy. Well done.

  • kaycem

YES, solange finally gets a much-deserved “werq”… i agree with all of t.lo’s sentiments, too — i’ve always found her far more attractive and interesting than bey.  in some ways, i even like her music better…  “sol angel and the hadley st. dreams” was my shit for a good long while.

anyone seen those ellen von unworth pics for luhrve magazine?  i can’t see bey smearing her face with lipstick, going the “ugly-pretty” route.  solange is who she is and doesn’t mind showing it off, even if she sacrifices being considered “conventionally beautiful” for her troubles. (although the argument can be made that bey has/has always had quite a lot of pressure on her to be a marketable product, and that includes a certain look so.)

  • damn. she looks so good!

btw i loved her last album, is there more where that came from?

  • Wow–just an amazing look.  I’m impressed!

  • GTrain

WOW. And totally agree with the comparison w/ Bey. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Solange in any House of Dereon garb.

  • What a gorgeous, stunning woman she is!  She’s got the greatest look, doesn’t she?

  • VioletFem

I love this whole look. Very chic and elegant. Plus, I love seeing gorgeous women with kinky-curly hair out.

  • claudemtl777

What does she do?( Besides being Bey’s sister)Does she sing? Any song we’d know?

    • apt9000

I know she’s acted a bit – but nothing recent that I can think of.

    • julnyes

yes she is a singer .. easy enough to look up her discography.

  • elemspbee

OMG, my first impulse when I saw this foto is she’s so much classier and interesting than someone else in her family tree. and then I read T’Lo’s write up!

She looks chic and elegant with an edge.

  • Very nice.  This may be a personal best for her.

  • SewingSiren

Stunning. A 21st century Aphrodite. Afrodite?

    • Rand Ortega

  • julnyes

It is all working like gangbusters. I would love to know what support garments are being worn because they have to be there, but they are invisible.

  • Diane_G

I’ve always preferred her look, attitude and music to Bey-Bey. She has no worries of coming off too abrasive and always says what’s on her mind. I can respect that rather than somebody that just remains silent.

  • unbornfawn

I bow. I bow. Absolutely love the hair, it is truly a crowning glory to this stunning look.

  • Jennifer Coleman

Sol has learned from her mistakes and hits more than misses these days. Her style is evolving before our eyes into an interesting and frequently complex mix. You guys have (of course) hit it on the head about the sisters – while I can envision Bey in this frock, she would have tarted it up with the hair & accessories vs. Sol’s take, which is just right.

  • msdamselfly

I agree- I think Solange has a more intelligent face and is very beautiful

  • baxterbaby

TLo, you read my mind!  While I was scrolling through, I was arrested by her face in the 3/4 shot.  I thought, “what a lovely strong face.  It has character.”  I think Beyonce is beautiful, but you’re so right, it’s a conventional beauty, and I daresay she is probably packaged to appeal to the broadest audience possible.  Solange has a face that will age gorgeously and she looks all kinds of stunning in these pictures.

  • Zippypie

    Huge WERQ.  I bow.

  • Catiline

That second picture – WOW!!!  The best part is she knows damn well how good she looks…

  • Le_Sigh

Agreed.  I also like her hair like that.  I don’t think Bey could pull off an au naturale look w/o trying to make overwork the Sexy.

  • PeaceBang

Full-on diva. Perfection, and what fun.

  • littlemac8

  • another_laura

Stunning.  Just stunning.  I love her natural hair.

  • BrooklynBomber

  • Sartorial_She

Jaw-droppingly gorgeous…with the tiniest quibble: too many rings.

    • kimmeister

I was so focused on the plethora of bangles that I didn’t even notice the rings!

  • Had to click when the title included both “Solange” *and* “WERQ.” And she did.

  • megohd

This girl needs to give her sister some hair advice, STAT. I HATE Beyonce’s hair. Lately I just look at her and say: Who do you think you’re kidding? Too blond and too much of it. It does nothing for her.

    Solange kicks ass. Stunning woman.

    • galcurly

Solange’s hair is simply awesome.  It makes Beyonce’s hair look beyond fake in comparison.

  • Judy_J

Thanks for the Mahogany reference.  One of my all-time guilty pleasure movies.  I agree, Solange looks fab here.  Love the shoes.

  • I LOVE that white dress.  She looks ab/fab!!

  • Scimommy

I’m so with you on this, it’s not even funny.

  • Love it! You can almost never go wrong with white with gold accents. Also, I can totally see Solange playing Miss Ross in her biopic.

  • Vanja

Wow, I love everything about this look.

  • Rand Ortega

This is chic & hot. WERQ that unique, Afro goddess vibe, Miss Solange!

  • Lilithcat

Aside from the fact that she’s wearing far too many rings and bangles (listen to Coco, girl!), she looks fabulous.

  • maggiemaybe

She’s a goddess. The hair is fabulous.

  • quiltrx

    Girl, that IS your dress!

  • eight_of_nine

So freaking elegant.  I love her hair!

  • Breathtaking!

  • altalinda

  • you’renotmysupervisor!!

I think the world would explode from awesomeness if she and Erykah Badu were ever in the same room.  Such incredible natural beauty.

  • Sarah Thomas

How bout we not pit two lovely sisters against each other in a made-up competition?

  • TieDye64

I love this look so much. Girl is killin’ it and LOVE the hair!

  • bellafigura1

Her hair and make up are exquisite.

  • PrunellaV

You just know that Solange is more interesting than her sister.

  • Bow Down!

  • rh33

    Amazing squared.

  • Contralto

totally agree about Miss Solange.  She is marvelous and I love that she’s a natural.

  • Lisa Kramp

She’s glorious and lovely, but I would have had her remove about four of those bangles. Then she would be perfect, too.

  • Trisha26

    Stunning. Totally agree, TLo!

  • Stunning.

This picture should be in the Louvre in 5000 A.D.  Right next to its companion piece, Winged Victory.

  • She is gorgeous!  A million times more stunning than her bleached out and flat ironed sister!

  • Judih1

Glad that neither one of them wears the clothing line started by their Mom.

  • snarkykitten

    I was gonna ask if she was the more fashionable sister of Beyonce. shows you how much I pay attention to celebs ^.^;

  • Why can’t she look like this all the time??

  • lrhoff

Totally agreed, boys.  You hit the nail on the head with your assessment/observation.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Love it.  I think she could have decorated her hair a little bit to get an “evening” feel.  Some kind of gold accents might have been nice.  But the dress is stunning on her.

  • Yes! Solange has arrived.

  • Agreed.

  • SpcilK

Not normally a fan of hers but…. She looks Amazing from headto toe.

  • Candigirl1968

Solange seems to go more places with her outfits and take more fashion risks (for good or for bad – this time, it’s for awesome).  Beyonce is Marcia Brady (big sister homecoming queen, textbook pretty, everybody’s favorite) and Solange is Jan without the angst.

  • librarygrrl64

“Sol makes a lot of sartorial mistakes, but her underlying goal seems to be “chic,” whereas Bey’s seems to be “hot.”
    Well said! 🙂

  • lilazander

Classic amazing! She looks crazy great, and elegant of all things!

  • Tonia Smith

i have seen her grown over the last 10 years and I LOVE how she has come into her own. Interesting fashion choices and I LOVE her hair!

  • ccm800

More striking? Come one. Ya know its sincerely obvious this one tries hard as hell to get out from under her sisters immense shadow but truth be told…she’d be working in a food court somewhere if she wasn’t her sister. Not an enviable position in one respect but terribly enviable in another.
