WERQ: Christina Hendricks in Tadashi Shoji

Posted on September 14, 2012

Oh, Miss Christina. Your tits have truly never looked better. We’re gay, so we can say that without getting slapped. Most of the time.

Christina Hendricks attends ‘The Book Of Mormon’ Los Angeles Opening Night in a Tadashi Shoji dress.

Tadashi Shoji Mesh Stripe Fit & Flare Dress

That dress is absolutely perfect for her shape. Don’t even try and tell us she hasn’t hired a smart stylist because after years of demonstrating a distinct lack of understanding when it comes to dressing her own body, she’s suddenly done a complete 180 on the matter, offering up one look after another that could serve as a primer on how to dress a curvy lady. And we’re thinking whoever’s advising her right now must have ordered her to get a bra fitting, because her ladypillows never looked less tortured and more succulent than they do here (although we’re not sure how she’s wearing a bra right now). With that gorgeous new hairstyle, she’s serving up 21st Century Ginger Grant realness. You WERQ them curves, girl. Bra snaps!

Bra snaps! Love it! And I couldn’t agree more! She looks great – that dress shows off her curves while also minimizing her overall size.

  • She really does seem to have found the right direction. She looking smashing. Sexy, but not tawdry.

  • jw_ny

    succulent  ladypillows!  lmao!  😀

I never thought I’d see Christina Hendrix and WERQ in the same title…but damn if she doesn’t deserve it here.  She looks lovely.

  • Laurie Bergman

I love that her version has a flared skirt, which suits her figure nicely. She looks both luscious and comfortable!

    • MoHub

I had the same reaction. The tapered skirt would have made her look overly hippy.

      • MilaXX

agreed, the flare on the bottom balances out her top.

    • ecallaw1977

I thought the complete opposite.  She looks great, but I think the fitted skirts like she wears on Mad Men are insanely flattering.  Her hips and butt are unbelievable.

      • poggi

Me too.  I like this skirt too.  It’s easy to wear and flatters lots of figures, but she also looks great in fitted pencil skirts to.

        • not_Bridget

Yes, but I believe she needs to wear industrial strength foundation garments for those pencil skirts…

      • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I don’t think this look is all that flattering at all.  But it might be because of my computer screen being too dark or something and not showing enough detail on the outfit.

  • twocee

I honestly think the biggest improvement is her new haircut.  She no longer looks like she’s trying to be a pin-up girl from another era.

    • lovelyivy

Agreed- that cut is sharp! Perfectly flattering, and modern to boot.

  • She’s wearing something to hold the lady pillows up.  They do not magically do that at that size.  I still think perhaps a belt or something to break up the black. I kept leaning in towards the screen to get a good look.  It also would have looked equally as good as it’s shown on the model.  Keep it up girl!

    • Evalonne

It looks like she’s wearing a demi-cup bra. In the last picture, you can just baaaaaarely catch some of the lace on it (more like it’s the perfect color, and the camera caught it JUST right to catch it.

Speaking as a well-endowed lady (though not QUITE as endowed), it’s a perfect style bra for ample bosoms.

      • I noticed it too. That is a VERY well-hidden bra.

      • AmeliaEve

Now that you mention it, I can see just a bit of the bra — balconette style with the wide-set straps. That would also explain why CH’s ballerina neckline is not as wide as that of the model. Looking good.

      • Kristin McNamara

I think that’s just wonky resolution in that last photo. Look at the black in the dress… there’s all these messed-up, pixely areas. I think the “lace on the top of her bra” is actually just an optical illusion.

        • You can actually see the lace making the same shape in the other photos. It is extremely hard to spot, but it is definitely there; enlarging the photo and enhancing the color clarifies the shape of the nude lace bra underneath.

      • Man, some of you kittens sure have eagle eyes.  This may just be negligence on my part.

  • granddelusion

You can see the nude-colored bra straps on the sides. She also has tremendous, harsh cleavage, which tells me it’s not fitting all that well. But perhaps this look is necessary in a dress like this, otherwise the whole bra would show.

    • I think it’s a demi-cup pushup bra, from the width apart of the straps and the cleavage. Why is “harsh cleavage” a necessary sign that it’s not fitting well? I’m not sure what it means for cleavage to be harsh, but it’s not like she has uniboob.

      • MilaXX

I  thought it was a demi cup as well and I thought it was worn in order to not interfere with the sheer bands. She has to wear some sort of bra, so a nude demi cup really is the smartest way to go. That’s some high level stylist knowledge right there.

        • Yeah, and the match to her skin is perfect. Especially since it seems like TLo at first glance didn’t pick up on it and they are the best. I had to look pretty closely to see the difference in texture. Just perfection.

    • HobbitGirl

Unfortunately, some of us have “tremendous, harsh cleavage” even with a good-fitting bra. Once the girls get to a certain size, nothing’s going to eliminate that uncanny valley…

  • Geoff Dankert

Shoji seems to be the go-to designer for what Ven-Bot would call “real” women, no? See also: Spencer, Octavia.

    • tereliz

Exactly! I’ve been waiting for CH to wise up and realize this. Love her hair like this, too. So sleek and modern.

    • Vickiefantastico

That’s exactly what I was thinking! Shoji is becoming one of my favorite designers. His (her?) looks are great on the runway and on women of all sizes. That’s the mark of a great designer, in my humble opinion.

    • SpillinTea

Don’t forget his designs for Mo’nique during her Precious oscar run. Hes a master at dressing Curvy Divas.

    • BerlinerNYC

I can’t remember any specifics for the life of me, but I know I associate the name with one or several knockout looks over the past year.

  • Kate4queen

Tadashi Shoji really designs beautiful dresses for real curvy women. I appreciate that tremendously. 🙂 She looks lovely.

    • Yes, and I appreciate that it’s no big deal, either.  Women in his designs look lovely, no matter what their size.  Imagine:  designing for women who can wear your clothes!

    • Tadashi Shoji may be my new favorite designer (Don’t worry D&G: you still get my love).

  • She looks amazing! And yes, she is wearing a bra. Her stylist was smart & got her one in her skin tone. It’s barely noticeable but you can see it if you look hard enough. I want that dress for myself!

  • Sobaika

LOVE – although I sort of wish she didn’t have the tulle on her dress and it was more like the models. Looks like it was added in an attempt to make it flare out further, which I understand.

Also loving that Tadashi Shoji can design for more than just a model’s figure. Between Christina Hendricks and Octavia Spencer, that’s quite the range!

  • nannypoo

If you look closely at the last picture you can see that she is wearing a nude lace bra. That is a powerful bra, because her boobs have never before seemed to be in proportion with the rest of her body. The dress is perfect for her and she looks fabulous.

  • pattyw

Interesting how with her extremely pale skin, the sheer panels look like white stripes from a distance. Shoji did such a great job dressing Octavia Spencer during Oscar season–seems to have a gift for women with curves.

  • HobbitGirl

I think it was really clever to change the ribbing to vertical stripes along the waistline instead of horizontal…subtle, but so flattering.

  • Gorgeous! And maybe the dress has a built-in bra? Just a guess.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

yr gay so you think that. ask a straight guy, he’ll likely tell you something different.
but she does look a whole lot better, here. i agree. pretty dress too, i like the way they made the skirt more a-line. nice hair.

    edited to add:
oh, the bra. there actually have been a few strapless made over the last, i dunno, five/seven years or so, that would heft a pair of butterball turkeys. i do know, & i have one around here somewhere. i think. i know they were promoted to me people by at least a pair of people who would also know.

  • Clear straps on the bra, or a corset that supports them from underneath, that’s my theory.

  • Look closely gentlemen.  There’s the barest hint of a nude lace bra, stage right and stage left.  Very subtle and well done!

  • I think the hair is maybe a little bit too flat, and I can see her bra through the dress (it’s right there, guys, that yellow-ish lace beneath the sheer part of the dress), but girl is WERQing it like never before and she knows it. SNAPS!

  • Snaps up! I wish the lighting were better – I bet that ribbing did glorious things for her figure in person. Is it just me or does it look like they adapted the ribbing slightly to better highlight her comparatively tiny waist? It looks like it goes vertical in the middle on Christina, which I think is a better choice for most women than the original bandage-like silhoette while still keeping the interest of the original dress intact. Or is my display deceiving me and it’s just exactly the same?

  • LesYeuxHiboux

She is wearing a lacy nude bra, you can see the cups leading into the straps up near her shoulders. I do this all the time with lacy-shouldered tops. One of the perks of fair skin is that “nude” bras actually blend really well. It looks super supportive, I wonder what brand? This dress is absolutely adorable, and I want it for myself. I love the clutch with it, but I wish the shoes were more fun and less fussy. Hair and makeup look just right.

    • MilaXX

I don’t mind the shoes as much as I dislike the bows on the shoes. Still this is such an improvement I can overlook them.

  • Kayceed

Interesting use of the fabric – looks like horizontally ribbed to the waist, then vertically ribbed through the waist to the hip like a corset, then no ribbing at all to allow the folds to fall into an A-line. Very nice.

  • M_E_S

You go, YoSaffBridge!  Finally she’s dressing herself as gorgeously as she should!

  • Judy_J

Fabulous.  She looks lovely.  The new softer hairdo really suits her.  Give that stylist a raise!

  • MeredithCallahan

Her bra is right there, it’s visible– lace straps and visible lace cups, white or nude. She knew it would show and she knew she needed it, so she picked something lovely that complemented the dress. Good styling!

  • She is a lovely, luscious lump of lady-ness. I would totally change teams for her, if she were so inclined.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I’m….not sure I like it. It seems to create a bit of a shapeless block out of her, doesn’t it? Between the blinder boobs and the flared skirt, her waist seems lost, especially from the side.

The hair/wig and make up are fantastic, though.

  • NDC_IPCentral

“Bra snaps!”  Made me giggle, which is always welcome.  Ms. Hendricks looks lovely here; the new stylist is earning his/her pay and a bonus.

  • Monday1900

She looks fantastic.  I would actually buy and wear that dress (and I think I can count the times I’ve thought that about a celebrity outfit on one hand!)

  • tallgirl1204

I like how this dress allows one to show some thigh without SHOWING SOME THIGH.  However, I am not as enamoured of its general appearance as TLo.  Perhaps in a brighter color I would be able to see the seaming/tucks more– a wine-y red?  Or a pop of belt?   It seems to me that the dark color is hiding her body rather than showcasing it.  But geez, she is purty, ain’t she?

  • BrooklynBomber

  • MilaXX

I was so happy to see this pic. Tadashi Shoji is truly a curvy gals best friend. I can also see the bra if you look closely. it appears that she is wearing a flesh toned demi cup.  New stylist or not, she looks great! It’s a WERQ for me.

  • Daaaaaaaamn.

  • shopgirl716

I’m a curvy girl and I WANT that dress.  Badly.

    • Panem_et_Circenses_disqus

      Saw it at Nordstroms…

  • Jessi03

  • Love it! I wouldn’t have thought that style of dress would suit her, but it really does. She looks fantastic.

  • TheOriginalLulu

She looks breathtaking. Hair and makeup are perfect and that dress is great on her. Whoever she’s paying to put together her looks is certainly doing right by her. Hope she gives them a nice bonus come holiday time.

  • It looks like the altered the dress with an A line shape and it is perfect!!!

  • PERFECT! She looks gorgeous! I love her hair, too.

  • Christina’s version has set-in sleeves, which allows the neckline to fall higher on her shoulders, thus allowing a bra with straps.

  • Yael Shuval

She is wearing a bra. You can see a little bit of it in the mesh stripe. It is just perfectly matched to her lovely skin.

  • It appears that they changed the skirt to make it an a-line which I ADORE. Great shape for her.

  • Valdri8

She looks so much better, but am I the ONLY one who hates her in black, which she seems to wear almost exclusively? That dress in brown or green would be killer on her, and as I have said before, she can wear so many colors that others simply cannot, it is a shame to see her always default to black.

    • ecallaw1977

       I agree completely.

    • I say this every time. I don’t know why people with pale skin automatically think they look good in black. It’s so harsh and aging.

  • Fabulous. It looks way better on her than on the  model.

  • janetjb

The length and flare of the skirt are perfect for her.

  • Jellybish

Strapless long line bra, totally. She looks amazing.

  • I guess I can’t agree here. I think this looks very…maternity. Still, a step ahead of where she was a few months ago, when she didn’t have a stylist.

  • VeryClaire

Can you avoid using the word “ladypillows” for, approximately, ever?

  • StelledelMare

Can we talk for a second about how Tadashi Shoji makes things that work well for several body types? Love it. Gorgeous clothes that can work on just about everyone and anyone. He is really a pretty perfect designer. Now if only I could afford even one thing of his.

Christina looks lovely. Although maybe a different shoe choice would have been better and as someone else mentioned, I too would love to see her get away from black a bit more.

  • I prefer ‘ladypillows’ to the vulgar tits or boobs any day…  How about the classic ‘bustline’?

  • theblondette

And checking out Tadashi Shoji’s website, I see you can search by body type! A designer who understands women come in a range of shapes?! What will they think of next…

  • poggi

I wholeheartedly agree.  She looks beautiful, sexy, and fresh.  I love the hair too.

I like that whoever is working with her now seems to prioritize getting her clothes that fit and flatter her as opposed to prioritizing what is most recent or in demand.   She or new stylist seems unwilling to sacrifice looking great in order to wear something from designer X’s most recent collection.

  • Can you not call them tits? It seriously sounds so vulgar. Ladies have breasts!

In seriousness, I think she’s wearing a flesh-coloured bra in an amazingly suitable shade? I feel like I’m not imagining the cups and the straps showing through the mesh.

I kinda wish she was working with slightly more hair, but she looks luscious and lovely.

  • Le_Sigh

Yaaaay!  Foinally!  Love the modern Christina fierceness.

  • MissMariRose

Love the A-line version she is wearing. So flattering.

  • EEKstl

Finally! She looks divine.  Only quibble: Wish the shoes were a little less “delicate” and more interesting…even just a classic black suede stilletto would have been better.  But…she is gorge here.

  • And the face! and the PERFECT HAIR!
    Love the whole look.

  • I love this dress and I’ve been checking it on the website every other day hoping to one day see it on sale (hopes and dreams!) or I’ve gathered enough money to purchase the dress.

  • “Bra snaps.” *snort* She looks lovely. Such a pleasure to see her dressed like this, with such a gorgeous new haircut.

  • ojosazules

She looks really good. I think too much volume was added around the bottom of the dress.

  • Rand Ortega

Dah. Licious! Drenched in awesome sauce! She looks confident & oh, so sexy! The dress is accentuating everything w/out looking overworked or too tight. Accessories are fantastic– especially that clutch! This is the best I’ve seen her outfitted in years.  3 snaps & a double swirl.

  • mhleta

TLo, you keep talking about tits like that they’re going to revoke your membership to the gay boys’s club. Glad you said it and not me or my card to the hetera girls’ club might be subject to scrutiny.

  • aristida_girl

she looks fantastic, good for her!

  • frannyprof

And you can see in her face that she’s loving her new look. Confidence oozing out of every pore (assuming she even *has* pores).

  • Snailstsichr

She looks so great – and yet approachable, too. I hope she and her stylist never break up.snaps, indeed!

  • Judy_S

Great dress on her, but I am especially charmed by the hair (and makeup?). She looks so girlish, in a very good way.

  • pugluv

For once…her hair looks great!!! She is such a beautiful woman, it always made me sad to see her in the many outfits that did her NO favors.

  • The shoes, as always, are pretty bad.  A simple closed-toe stiletto pump or a strappy  sandal would have been better than these office-work shoes. Hair and makeup are flawless. The dress needs a belt to set off her waist and some kind of colored accessory..  A lady with her coloring needs a spot of color in any outfilt, imo.

  • meowing

Ohhh, bra snaps, the bane of my 6th grade existence!  Brava, tho, she does look so very much better than when she tried to dress herself.  Brava snaps.

  • marilyn

The color is too harsh for her.  It is an interesting design with the sheer panels, and a good shape for her.  But she is obviously wearing pounds of makeup so she does not look like the living dead.  She is a cute girl, and the dress should have been in a lighter color.

  • mmc2315

    Love the hair.

  • sweetlilvoice

Looks great and I just watched Drive in which she had a small part.

  • My only complaint is that I wish she’d worn a slightly toned down lipstick…

  • Trisha26

I don’t like the shape on her – she looks stocky instead of statuesque. Cute dress though.

  • j_anson

She’s wearing a bra. You can see it in the last pic. It’s just exactly the same color as her skin.

    • mayavaly

Yes, absolutely agree with you. I saw it too.

  • alyce1213

Shoji is the right designer for her, this is beautiful and it fits.  But her hair is stringy and the shoes are too “precious.”

  • throwaneyeonthis

The Girls look good.  Unless you have perfectly toned and trim legs from the knee up, this dress doesn’t do your legs any favors.  I know from experience from trying on the Summer version earlier this year.  Dress was perfect from shoulders to sheer panels on skirt, then it turned into a huge MEH.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I want that dress. Her version. I’m guessing she’s wearing a bra that is very much the color of her skin.

  • SapphoPoet

She’s getting it right. Go, girl!

  • margaret meyers

That is a cute dress — it looks great on the model and it looks great on CH.

  • jmorino08

Gah! I think it’s frumpy and the wrong length for her. Makes her lower legs looks like stumps!

  • CPK1

love the dress and her bosom looks fab. But she seriously has the worst taste in footwear

  • She looks amazing! I’m so happy for her. She clearly knows she looks good.
Easy answer on the bra thing: Corset/long-line bra.

  • Amazing look. Love her hair.

  • carpediva

I know TLo hates when the Bitter Kittens knitpick their WERQs… but the latest stream of them (except K-Stew) has left me totally befuddled, to where I’m almost wondering, Princess Bride style, if suddenly the word “does not mean what I think it means”!

Totally agree her choices lately are light-years ahead of where she was, but this just doesn’t seem especially like a personal best. (And GROSS, what is that extra tulle layer that’s been added on top of the cute model version?)

Plus I know (think?) she has feet issues, but her Payless shoes always make me weep. (I have feet issues too, though, so I understand.)

  • YES!  She looks unreal.  Perhaps that’s corsetry under there?  They tend to do a good job of serving boobs without smooshing them.  Love the hair.

  • PrunellaV

I am dismayed at my disagreement with the great T and Lo. Looks like a tent to me.

  • Huh. I have the same shape as her and am always trying to find clothes that don’t make me look…er, fat and top-heavy. And I gotta disagree with you here TLo. This looks terrible on her. I guess it’s not so bad in the final close-up.

  • Kyle Crawford

she is 15 years younger ! BOOM!  Yes, she got some new gays….

  • DinahR

She looks so beautiful!   Totally love this look and she’s really been amazing lately with her outfits.

I think she is wearing a ninja bra or shapewear that matches her skin tone.  If you look through the illusion net toward the shoulder seam and downward there seems to be the faintest disruption in the illusion netting forces that isn’t present on the model’s photo.  The outline curves a little over her bosom.  The straps sit wide on her shoulders and are camoflagued by the shoulder seam.  I don’t think it takes away from the look at all, and what it’s doing for her is well worth it anyway!  I just mention this magic for the rest of us that have a similar figure issues.  🙂

  • LittleKarnak

    Ginger Grant!!!! Love It!!!!!

  • guest2visits

What a perfect look! A different kind of dress from most everything else she’s worn too. Nice change up.

  • Laylalola

It’s almost certainly some sort of foundation strapless bodysuit she’s wearing underneath. She looks fantastic (though, again, black is really too harsh for her coloring — notice that they hardly ever dress her in black on Mad Men, and there’s a good reason. But that’s my only quibble).

  • I want that dress, so bad. GAH. I’m shaped very much like Christina, so lately I’ve been coveting everything she’s been wearing. Girlfriend definitely got herself a new stylist.

  • kikisayshi

  • quiltrx

Terrific!  Flattering and makes her look her age (as opposed to usually looking so much older).

  • adnama79

I can’t get over the hair and make up.  I’ve never seen a picture of her looking so fresh and modern.  She always looks beautiful b/c she just is, but wow, she has transformed.

    Bra snaps to her stylist!

  • Nancy Karpen

Shoji knows how to design for a curvy woman.  This is fabulous on her.  Love it.

  • She is wearing something to keep the girls up. You cannot go braless at that cup size and have them remain that high. I know because I’m full chested, too.

  •  P.S. She looks fabulous!

  • ccm800

She looks 19 years old here. Someone is in love? Or found a great aesthetician?  She looks marvelous. I would love to see this on her in navy.

    • Yes, the black is gorgeous, but with her coloring, the navy would also look fabulous on her!

  • LuisaNL

bra snaps. *giggles* love this look on her, hair looks great, don’t love the shoes. she always goes for these precious peep toe shoes doesn’t she?

  • Oh man, this girl got herself some new gays on the payroll!  She looks amazing!  I do love the little extra bit of tulle at the bottom – it’s sweet without being saccharine.  And yes, her knockers look fabulous, and she must be wearing a VERY good bra! I have smaller bazongas than that, and I can’t go braless without major support, so you know she has to (by the way, to all my big-busted Sister Kittens – Lillyette Minimizer Bras. $34 at Macy’s.  Three rows of hooks to smooth out any back rolls, and great support – heaven.  I’m just saying’).

Back to Christina – LOVE the new hair and makeup too – yes, this is a total home run for our girl!

  • Susan Crawford

Tadashi Shoji! I mean, this man is GENIUS – he makes gorgeous clothing for MANY figure-types, and he knows how to make curvy women look sexy AND chic. This is a gorgeous look for Miss Hendricks. I hope she ordered a LOT of wonderful Shoji because his spring collection was fabulous.

And as a fellow red-head, the hair . . . I DIE for that gorgeous hair. (Can you imagine what a hit Hendricks would have been if she went back in time and posed for Titian? Renoir?)

  • Shawn EH

Yeah, CH, make that skinny model dress your own! Very pretty.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

Is it weird that I’m so very proud of her? Finally the day has come where we all don’t cringe and we can relish in the fact that you, a beautiful woman, looks like well – a beautiful woman in beautiful clothes. Snaps, indeed!

  • She looks so gorgeous! Also, I think her new stylist must have shown her how to pose for pictures. I love her restrained smile. She is absolutely beautiful. However, she tends to over smile on the red carpet and her features get kind of distorted. I haven’t seen her look this good on a red carpet before. Keep up the great work, Christina (and your new stylist)!

  • MarissaLG

This is the best she’s looked in a long time. The outfit is perfection but makeup puts her over the top into extreme WERQ territory.

  • unbornfawn

I guess she finally listened to TLo. The hair and make-up are youthful in the best way for her and the dress is flattering for a change. Good job girlfriend!

  • I’ve always loved her! It’s so nice to see her dressing right for her body type! As for the bra situation, you can just slightly see her bra under the sheer stripes of the dress. It’s a light colour to match her skin tone. I wish she’d thrown a thin belt on. It would have drawn attention to her tiny waist. Her hair looks fabulous!

  • Dot

LOVE this neckline on her, too.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Definitely some new styling going on. Beautiful!

  • librarygrrl64

    Young! Fresh! Pretty! Finally!!!
