WERQ: Anne Hathaway in Valentino Couture

Posted on September 21, 2012

We’ve taken Annie to task for trying to do some sort of airy-fairy, “Midsummer Night’s Hipster” by way of Michelle Williams sort of thing ever since she got her Fantine cut. It just wasn’t working for us. She’s more Liza than Mia, if you know what we mean.

But by golly, we think she might just have found the perfect dress to blend her waif look with her more glam Hollywood style:

Anne Hathaway attends the 2012 New York City Ballet Fall Gala at the David H. Koch Theater, Lincoln Center in a Valentino Couture gown paired with a Roger Vivier clutch.

Valentino Fall 2012 Couture Collection/Model: Vanessa Axente (VIVA)

Now THAT is an impact dress. And it suits her coloring to a T. This is the best she’s looked in some time. You WERQ that floral princess shit, Miss Lady! Fairy Snaps!

This dress belongs to Florence Welch.

    • http://twitter.com/luqluqe LuqeMann

Kinda thought so too. Actually I think this dress doesn’t really suit her at all in a “bring back the old Annie” kinda way. Although someone called “Old Annie” might just be able to pull this one off.

      • Lisa_Cop

My hair stylist (at Garren) said she had to cut her hair for a movie role she filmed. I like her gown and the other civilian Valentino gowns. The Valentino ballet costumes, though, were terrible by all accounts.

    • Little_Olive

I think Annie looks purrfect here. I don’t see why award Florence Welch the monopoly on long floral dresses. She actually needs to grow past them IMO.

      • Celandine1

  • alyce1213

She’s never looked better. The dress is to die for, her hair is growing out nicely, makeup is perfect. WERQ for sure, and I’m not her biggest fan.

    • kschwarting

I don’t love the dress, but I agree with the rest of your assessment.  She is WERQing that look for all it’s worth (which I’m sure is a lot).

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Love, love, love the dress.  Hate, hate, hate the hair.

    • afabulous50

I think her hair is adoborable….especially since mine looks exactly the same.

      • Aly Marti

hahah me too! well, mine aspires to look like that.

    • gsk241

I don’t like that cut on her, either.  It kinda ruins the whole look for me.

    • http://6things.blogspot.com par3182

Love the hair, hate the dress.

      • filmcricket

        My feelings exactly.

        • Wendi126

          And mine.

          • Tracy_Flick

Me three. It looks like she’s molding.

          • luciaphile

            Me four.

      • Lisa_Cop

Again, not her choice – she cut it for a movie role.

    • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

I know it’s for a part, but man the hair kills it for me. Other women/girls look fresh and perfect with a pixie, but I really don’t think it suits her, no matter whether she’s dressed up or down.

      • NC_Meg

I think her features are too big for a pixie cut. Which isn’t bad (I envy her eyes and lips like nobody’s business) but I think the long hair balances it all out. And she’s got such pretty hair.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1013443339 Hannah Prutton

    AHHHHHHHH gorg.

  • RebeccaKW

That dress is gorgeous!  And I love the way her hair is styled, for the first time, and the make up is great.  It combines to really soften her features.  Her head finally looks good with this mistake of a cut.

  • Ryan Williamson

Holy shit. That is stunning. She looks like an alluring wood nymph/elf princess.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

      My thoughts, exactly.

    • DeborahJozayt

If Hollywood ever wanted to do a biopic of Liza Minelli, Anne would be perfect for the role. You’d never know it with her long hair, but with the short hair the possibility is so there.

  • afabulous50

She is a stunner.  Oh Anne, honey…can you send your make-up person over to my house?  Pretty please!

  • RzYoung

yep yep yep that’s working, that’s werqing!

  • Kyle Crawford

wow.. the first OMG! fashion moment in a while…. perfect.

  • lalahartma

It doesn’t do anything for me.  And her breasts look strange.

    • A Reeves

They do. Is it the dress?

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I cannot explain this, especially with the illusion/transparency of the bodice, but some reason the dress is giving off a matronly vibe to me.

    • http://twitter.com/chrystyl Chrystyl

I agree!  And I can’t unsee the two flower “pasties” on the front of the dress, especially because they aren’t repeated anywhere in the floral pattern.

  • http://twitter.com/jessicapippin Jessica Pippin

I saw this picture of her last night and was hoping you guys would post this as a WERQ. I think she looks amazing. That’s a gorgeous dress on her, and that’s the best I’ve seen her hair look in a while.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

as if the dress were designed w/ her, & only her, in mind.

  • jmw1122

I normally hate that kind of a dress, but she’s making it look wonderful. I’m loving it.

  • Tatiana Luján

I love the hair and makeup, but this dress looks like courtains to my eyes.

  • Patricia Gillett

Love. She’s tall enough to pull this off very well and the hair is fab with it. And snaps up for a ladystar showing good posture on the RC.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Girl, that’s some serious “Nymph Diva of the Woods” look. WERQ!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

The fact that her hair is just a teeny bit longer helps immensely.  The bangs especially.  Not crazy over the dress, but sometimes everything just werqs!  This is one of those times.

  • http://twitter.com/TheRealSandraOh Sandra Oh

I think it looks like old curtains.  Pass for me.

    • MissAnnieRN

Yes, I agree. With mold growing on them. SHE looks fab in the face though.

  • Tatiana Luján

¿Had you ever noticed how long her neck is?

    • DTLAFamilies

The giraffe neck was the first thing I noticed in these pics. I think it’s an optical illusion caused by the dress and hair paired together. Big ol’ out for me.

  • Sobaika

DEATH BY FASHION. I’m loving this so much!

  • Apocalipstick Now Redux

The elastic at the wrist is destroying this entire look for me.  It makes the sleeves look cheap, tacky and grandma-made.

    • lalahartma

      Yes!

  • Jangle57

Love her hair; I think that’s the best it’s looked since she went short.  The dress – I want to like it on her, I really do, it just seems like a lot of dress.  If there was  less length or less fullness in the sleeves maybe?  But the fabric/colors looks terrific on her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I have hated her hair from the first pics of the cut, she looks fantastic here. If I could figure out what a fairy snap consisted of, I’d be giving them.

  • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

I’d like that dress if it wasn’t for the weird dark band around mid thigh. It’s oddly widening. The general effect is good, though.

  • SapphoPoet

Lovely. She has such beautiful eyes. She looks like she just stepped out of a Maxfield Parrish painting…

  • Pants_are_a_must

That is some serious Titania-meets-Eve shit right here. I guess it’s a WERQ because she’s pulling off haute couture?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ashetalia-Staatz/100001792695528 Ashetalia Staatz

Ew. No. With all respect, that is not an ethereal elvish dress. That is a granny gown. Also, the color does nothing for her complexion, the shape does little for her body, and…imo no.

  • mjude

    lovely

  • nannypoo

Beautiful dress. I love the colors and the print. She’s combined the boobs-on-parade and the innocent waif looks perfectly here. I like the fluffier pixie better than the flatter version for her. She has large features in a small face and she needs volume.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I dunno. True her face and hair look great, but I think it’s the sleeves that make me not like this dress. Had it been sleeveless with the same neck line, it would have been a WERQ for me, but this is just too close to granny curtains. Yes, I just said that about Valentino Couture.

  • SewingSiren

    Positively perfect in every way.

  • leave_Blake_alone

What is that black swooping line along the front? From some angles it looks like she’s pregnant and her belly has distended all the way to her knees. This is gross.

    • call_me_schmeg

i’ve tried and tried to see what you’re seeing, but i just can’t. i keep re-reading your comment and scrolling up to the pictures. it’s like i’m staring at one of those blurred picture thingies from the 90s, hoping i’ll look long enough to see the image of the dolphins appear.

  • Judy_J

The design of the dress is lovely, but the print reminds me of granny’s sofa.  Perhaps if it were not so dark?  I do, however, LOVE Ms Hathaway’s haircut.  Very Audrey Hepburn.  That cut really shows off her beautiful eyes.

  • Lisa Dugan

Her hair and makeup are perfect.  I don’t adore the dress itself but I adore it on her/

  • MilaXX

That’s a great look and totally WERQ worthy. Love the restraint used in the makeup.

  • NDC_IPCentral

Is there a kangaroo pouch on the skirt of that dress?  There seems to be a awful lot of fabric.  Everywhere.

The pattern up near Ms. Hathaway’s neck is lovely and frames her face, but then, the rampant forest floor goes on and on and on.  Overwhelming, to my way of thinking.

    • Sara__B

What is that pouch thing? WHY is that pouch thing? Whatever it is, I wish it would go away.

  • janetjb

Brilliant! Not something I would picture her wearing, but she looks beautiful.  WERQ indeed.

  • quiltrx

That’s a fabulous dress, and she looks great in it…with this haircut.

When you’re done with it, darling, just put it back in Flo’s closet where it belongs!

  • siriuslover

Love it. I can’t wait to see her in Les Mis.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002954344294 Inger Svensson

She looks beautiful, but the dark band on the pattern right below the thighs gives her a sort of weird Botticelli painting belly from some angles.

  • Erin Courtney

Am I the only one who had to do a double take on the first pic because I thought she looked pregnant?

  • Judy_S

I like the dress in principle but not many women could carry it off and make it look elegant (as opposed to leftover from the 60s movie of Camelot). She does.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/QK3MTAHUVJCMI7DANY6WFCAIUM n a

i would hate this look on anyone else- and I love that she’s working just a bit of the longer pixie!  go annie!!

  • http://twitter.com/Bookmanfilm BookManFilm

Why is Winona Ryder on my screen?

  • http://twitter.com/grooxcore Marie Ee

the only thing that bothers me is the placement of those brown patches right where her nipples should be.

    • http://twitter.com/BrienneCalmer Brienne Calmer

Likewise, I’m having trouble with the triangular shaped dark patch ten inches below where her crotch ought to be.

    • kimmeister

I sat there and stared trying to figure out if I was seeing her nips, or if it was the dress.

  • Anathema_Device

Gorgeous. It is amazing that the long-sleeve floral gown doesn’t overwhelm her. Her long neck helps in that regard It also helps that her hair has grown a little bit and is softer looking. As much as I love short hair, the super short Fantine hair didn’t suit her as well as this length does.

  • AlexisPayne

I immediately thought of Julie Andrews in the last scene of Victor/Victoria in the high necked long sleeved black dress. I love this look!

  • kolokOlchik

    Oh wow!  Stunner!

  • SpcilK

    Sublime!

  • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

I LURVE the dress though. Stunning.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=746098172 Leigh Anne Statton

    I can’t with that hair…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

Can you picture her doing a bio of LIza Minelli?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1129137319 Paula Pertile

Wow. She should just never take that off.

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

It looks so much dirtier than it really is. And the pixie looks better now that it’s fuller. She’s a Sassoon vision.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

WOW. She looks like a fashion illustration.

  • Beardslee

Is she on the tall side?  Because she looks great and not swamped at all by those beautiful swathes of fabric.

    • amf0001

yes,  she’s not one of the tiny ones

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OD35QQZNBPZJXWTCBY7N4EE7VY Sarah

I can’t see anything below her neck. Her face is stunning and drawing ALL of my attention. Love the hair.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Clydette-Wantland/673315286 Clydette Wantland

Grandma called, she needs her drapes back.

  • tereliz

I think she looks chic as hell! Couture snaps, Annie!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/W7A5N4G7FDTV5U2KOHBVSB55XI Basket

I’m so bored with this child.

  • Jessica O’Connell

I wish it was lined though… I feel like she’s just one twist away from flashing a nipple and that’s very good.

  • Heather Rushworth

I hate that Girl Interrupted, straight-jacket-cut hair. It makes most wearers of it look positively insane.

  • Heather Rushworth

I hate that Girl Interrupted, straight-jacket-cut hair. It makes most wearers of it look positively insane.

  • miscorrections

I cannot with the nipple acorns.

  • http://twitter.com/hurricaneemilyy Emily Shaver

The moment I saw this I yelled, “GURLFRIEND THAT IS SO YOUR DRESS” So many snaps.

  • kelsita421

    Like a princess of Mirkwood!

  • e jerry powell

Truthfully, it reminds me of any of a number of gowns Erica Andrews has worn, though slightly more tasteful with the beading.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

She is simply stunning — strikingly so. That dress is to die for and although I am in the minority, I adore her hair.

  • EEKstl

This look could have so gone into Sisterwife territory (albeit Sisterwives who wear see-thru dresses), but snaps where they’re due: She looks stunning.  A bit off-topic: I read today Valentino is designing Anne’s wedding gown, sounds like the date is imminent.  I was musing to myself whether she would do extensions for her Big Day or just be Pixie Bride.  Anyone care to muse along with me?

    • amf0001

I’m voting pixie bride,  she doesn’t strike me as a totally fake look kind of gal.

  • GTrain

Wow that is the best I’ve seen her look in quite some time, and the first time I’ve liked the shorter haircut.

  • Jess5628

Any one else getting some Annie Lennox here? Looking good!

  • Lilak

Now we’re talkin’.   Every element is so just right and harmonious with everything else.

It’s the slightly grown-out length of her hair that snapped everything into place for me: It’s finally in proportion to her head/face/neck and frames her face wonderfully.  And this gown seems to work its magic just fine without a traditionally ‘romantic’ coif.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I don’t disagree about floral dresses, but I actually just saw long sleeves and “too much dress” and that took me to Flo.

  • MsMajestyk

This should look like a nightgown, but it doesn’t.  Love that print and her hair.

  • Call me Bee

    Ab fab!

  • turtleemily

I think the trend of couture = see-through needs to stop. I prefer the way the pattern looks over the darker areas from her butt down.

  • mayavaly

OMG, she looks stunning. Such a beautiful dress. Everything is so utterly perfect. She’s like the embodiment of love itself. And i just saw the trailer for Les Mis, opening Christmas Day. I started crying. Oh dear, someone is a bit tired and emotional today.

  • Where_is_the_Champagne

Um, no.  This is like the Lady GaGa meat dress, only a Annie mildew dress.  Also, there is weird shadowing going on under her crotch area.

Conclusion: this is an unflattering seaweed bride of loch ness monster costume.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001998855370 Fatima Siddique

Her hair and make-up are impeccable.

  • http://twitter.com/jen_canary Jennifer Ford

She is just stunning! That is the sexiest all-covered-up dress I’ve ever seen.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

    Wow. Stunning.

  • margaret meyers

See how the little, tight cuff makes the The Big Valley sleeve look elegant instead of clumsy.

  • Cousin_Rose

    lovely!

  • ThaliaMenninger

Don’t like it at all. Dreary is what I’m thinking. She looks great from the neck up, but the colors and the foofiness aren’t working for me.

    • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

Yup, “dreary” is a good word for it.

  • Zippypie

    That is indeed a WERQ!

  • http://www.facebook.com/renate.yerkes Renate Yerkes

Or Laurence Welk. Like that skit from S&L. But she does look very cute.

  • Judih1

Seems like half the kittens love the dress, half the kittens hate it. Half love her hair, half hate it. When I get famous, I will have to remember this when you guys start accessing my red carpet looks :) You just can’t please everyone, so be true to yourself.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Well done, but now I can’t unsee Liza.

    • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

      Right!

  • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

Not crazy about this look on her.  It’s not terrible, but that’s a lotta dress for her.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I *LOVE* it! It’s “floral princess,” but it’s DARK floral princess, which suits her perfectly!

  • Trisha26

    Beautiful.

  • RocknRollmom

Did Anne win the coin toss at Valentino?!  She looks spectacular in every
way as compared to poor Sarah Jessica in the next post who looks so very wrong in every way. I love her hair.  Back in the day, I used to be able to pull that off.  Sigh.

  • guest2visits

She looks pretty, her hair looks great,- but I’m only half sold on the dress.
It’s a little dreary and lifeless in these pics, maybe it’s more impactful in person.

  • littlemissstrange

Love the whole forest fairy look going on here. And it’s funny I’ve never noticed it before but with that hair she could TOTALLY be Liza. She’s got the sense of humor too.

  • Nonmercisansfacon

I pretty much dislike her but can’t say she looks bad.

  • DeTrop

I think Valentino has gone off the rails.  Between this and SJP’s getup I’m scratching my head.  The prints are pretty but there’s way too much material in these gowns.  The ladies look overwhelmed with fabric.  Think about it.  How do you enjoy yourself with all that material dragging on the floor and the sleeves are big enough for an athlete’s arms?  Too much.

  • NICHOLAS PASQUALE

Damn, now THAT is a WERQ. And I love the coloring of her light brown eyes.

  • ccm800

Agreed!  AND I think that tiny bit of lift to that hair makes ALL the difference.

  • aristida_girl

I love it, she looks amazing… woodland fairy-princess in a modern and understated way…
