Rachel Zoe Spring 2013 Collection

Posted on September 19, 2012

Three things Rachel Zoe loves: hats, layering, and sequins. So it’s no surprise that, even with a collection of bohemian androgyny inspired by Jane Birkin and Talitha Getty, Rachel managed to work all three in to great effect. The look here is cool, jet-setting sophisticate, perfectly styled in the Zoe manner.

  • Fanny packs, Rachel Zoe? FANNY PACKS?!?

    • formerlyAnon

Yeah, I know. I’ve been seeing them (like, real, grown-person handbag versions) pop up here & there and been shaking my head.

Because there are SOME things that mere mortals cannot pull off. Functional, yes. I’ve used one before, and unless I get rich enough to have “people” to hover out-of-frame and carry my stuff, I’ll use one again. But they kill any aspiration a mortal has to looking anything other than dorky and/or aging.

      •  I am SO with you! If one actually HAS a fanny, these just look horrendous. And as a mere mortal – why yes. Yes, I have a fanny. :[

        • Beardslee

I used one when I had a toddler and a baby and needed my hands free at all times.  I thought it was ugly but desperate times call for desperate measures.  And it was very very handy.
Then my children grew older and I haven’t used it since- I have enough problems, having the bad taste to be a portly middle aged woman, without compounding them with a fanny pack.

          • I moved to “cross body” bags and try to tell myself they are stylish (while allowing hands free) or there is always the “purse like” back pack (which I use on vacations). Both variations (I tell myself) are cooler then the “fanny pack” (which, yes, I did sport back in the day). I do have to say RZ’s do look nice on the model, but I won’t be trying it and I don’t see RZ trading in her huge bag for one either.

          • Knightley

Honestly, it’s like the professor I had at university who drove either a Mercedes station wagon.  A Mercedes station wagon.  MERCEDES. STATION WAGON.  I don’t care who’s name is on the car, it’s still a damned station wagon.  Same here with the fanny pack.  RZ–they’re still FANNY PACKS.  Love the collection though. 🙂

      • Chantelle James

I used to have an adorable little pack (maybe 4″x4″x1″ attached to an elastic belt. The pack was small enough that it was unobtrusive and didn’t look so much like a fanny pack. Of course this was 25 years ago when my fanny was considerably smaller.

    • oh wow I have a group of hipstery friends who all work for the same restaurant and they all started wearing fanny packs and I think it’s starting a trend where I live. :/

  • Stubenville

I Detest those fanny pack style purse-belts.

    • 2ndhandchic

Nothing can ever make a fanny pack stylish.

  • Sobaika

Loving that slouchy gold sequined gown. It would take the right woman to pull it off and not look sloppy, but it’s looking great on the runway.

    • kimmeister

It’s the look on the right of that slouchy gold gown that made me think, “It will take someone with a PhD in Wearing Stuff to pull that off, but it could be mega chic.”

  • Coralie Legister
  • BazoDee

Seems rather uninspired. Nice enough but no lines, colors, textures that make you sit up and lean in. In other words. YAWN.

  • I’m coveting those deep green bags….might have to break down and buy one

    • g8rbait

I don’t know what RZ prices are like, but Coach has some nice green bags out this autumn — no waiting!
Check out the Madison Lindsey satchel in aegean.

      •  Thanks!! just the color name has my interest piqued!! 🙂

  • I am liking a good deal of this.  Like some others, the fanny pack bags are making my teeth clench, as are some of the other accessories; most notably, the sheer booties. WTF?  But the clothes are, with exceptions, graceful, elegant, and fully wearable.  And not only in sample sizes.  The sheer pants with the granny panties are giving me fits, though.  Can we pretty, pretty please be done with that sort of thing?

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Is it time to begin a petition to kill off granny panties? Please….no mortal woman of any age wants to wear them.ever.

      • Maybe we ALL ought to wear them. The proud, the curvy, the way more than curvy, the thin, the guys, the pets, the moms, grandmas, aunts, uncles, mailmen, clerks, nuns and ground squirrels. Every cotton picking person you can lay your hands on should wear these stupid granny panties!

And maybe then, the sheep like designers will stop showing them. And come up with something new to derange us all…like fanny packs.

      •  WHERE, do I sign?

  • It’s a great collection if you want to look like Rachel Zoe.  I rather look like Posh Spice if I had to pick someone.

    • Rand Ortega

That’s SUCH a good point. When the idea of looking like someone else arises, Iman comes to my mind. But considering Posh’s last collection, she’s definitely great, too.

  • In_Stitches

AND pushed up jacket sleeves (a look I detest).

  • STOP SEE THRU.  Otherwise not my taste for the colors

  • Cathy S

I only really like the first dress. Okay, and the first dress in the first row. I am feeling pretty underwhelmed about the rest of it.

    • pattyw

Agree. Everything else seems overworked, too complicated, too many elements. A lot of it is just bleh.

  • I think those purse belts (who ever coined the phrase “fanny pack” should be shot) are GENIUS!

    • ballerinawithagun

I agree! These are not “fanny packs”, they are hands free party and travel purses. Everyone needs them and I’m so tired of gigantic purses. You don’t have to carry your whole life with you. I’m petite and the huge purse thing has been difficult for me. Hipsters, the Burning Man tribe, music festival people and I’m sure many more groups all wear their own variation of these hands free purses.

  • JimMcC

It’s a solid collection even if it doesn’t leave me jumping up and down. That said, the shiny romper-dress thing with the tit-pockets is made of evil.

  • IAmJ

I like some of the looks just fine. What kinda freaks me out is that this show is pretty much a bunch of Rachel Zoes walking up and down the runway.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

It seems pretty clear that Rachel is her own client.

  • jilly_d

Love the orange/raspberry color combo, and LOVE that off-the-shoulder sequined t-shirt gown.

  • A couple of these hats are not the right proportion: 2nd row middle/too big and 3rd row left/too small. Weird. And, sorry but I saw (and bought) these colors this past summer. I still like them but… timing? Unless retro now means “last season”.

  • Judy_J

Makes me want to pack up and go somewhere fabulous.

    • mjude

i am right there with you Judy!

  • Nice hair, each and everyone of you.

    (That was my sarcastic typing.)

  • hughman

I could see Faye Dunaway in a lot of these. Wait, did I say that out loud?

  • LesYeuxHiboux

One of the models has possessed nipples.

I love the greens in this collection, and I like her favored silhouettes a lot, they just don’t work on my figure at all. I’d give the green blazer a try if I struck it rich. Some really fun looks for Hollywood’s androgynes and the rail-thin likes of Emma Roberts et al.

    •  You can’t just throw out the line possessed nipples and not clarify! Now I’m going to have to scroll thru this again, fanny packs, grannie panties and all.

      • LesYeuxHiboux

Seventh row, on the right. Her jumblies have the deathlights.

        • WhiteOprah

I had to create an account just to comment- the laser-nipples are looking right at me and they’re freaking me out!

        • kimmeister

          *roars with laughter*

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

All in all, some good pieces.  Good, but not great.

  • boweryboy

Ok … is it me or does the model 7th row, far right literally have headlights?

  • TSkot

Seen all this before, haven’t we?

Stay a stylist, dear.  Leave designing to the people who know what they’re doing.

  • Squarah

Her stuff just seems so….unneeded. I always just think, “Why?” when I see anything of hers.

  • Rachel Zoe always leaves me underwhelmed. The same basic silhouettes, over and again, and nothing to stimulate my senses or incite excitement. Nice clothes, but I always wonder what makes her command the spotlight. I am reminded of Project Runway, season 2, when Santino makes his snarky comment about Chloe being a great pattern maker, but not a great designer. I keep looking, and asking: where is the spark?

  • Don’t like this as much as her last winter/fall collection which was BUH-NANAS but I have to admit, girl got style. I like her collections.

  • Valdri8

I want to know who can jet-set in a jump suit? Who. Have you ever tried to pee in a public place in one of those things? Impossible, just saying.

  • BrooklynBomber

I don’t like everything, but I like a lot. (But, you know, I tend to like ’60s & ’70s inspired looks.) I don’t think she’s trying to reinvent the wheel; I think she’s taking looks we know and giving them a little extra something, often with color, and sometimes the he pieces are put together.

  • granddelusion

    Baggy-ass transparent clothes.

  • marilyn

This is what happens when a stylist takes a shot at designing.  The clothes are boring, but accessorized very well.  Her 1970’s Charlies Angels style does not do it for me.  Her clothes are a rehash of the 1970’s.  Not interesting.

  • I like some of the colors, particularly the greens, teals, and the oranges. But I’m so f-ing tired of RZ’s aesthetic. Just about everything looks too big/too long/too slouchy, and while I love layering, this is too much for even me.

And I hate the fanny packs.

  • halleygee

Spring 2013 isn’t even here and I’m already tired of green jumpsuits.

  • mbelchic

Since I detest the way she dresses I wasn’t looking forward to this collection-But I honestly like most of it and would wear some-Good job!

  • MilaXX

meh. not overly impression by this collection. The only dress I wish cam e in my size is that first black/white one

  • gubblebumm

Yeah Fanny PackS!!!! I have been rocking them for years!!!

  • Lilak

Strikes me as “Better Department Store” … not aiming terribly high.

    • Yeah, it’s nice, but I’m not nuts about it.

  • Pennymac

This collection makes it apparent to me that her styling skills truly are impeccable. Every accessory, belt, hat, and shoe accentuates the outfits superbly.

  • rainwood1

I’ve liked each of Rachel’s collection and this is no exception.  She’s thinking about marketability from the beginning which is very smart.  And she doesn’t do many gowns so she’s not in competition with the designers she features on her clients.

  • Chantelle James

Agreed. There’s nothing new here – it’s just more of the same old look from her with the same hats and the same silhouettes. I don’t know why she bothers to do a runway collection when she’s just showing department store clothes.

  • Zippypie

Ew. Shiny animal prints and baggy jumpsuits.  No, no, no!

I’ve like Rachel’s collections up to this one.  This seems like a real mishmosh with little of the sophisication she’s shown in previous collections.  The colors are muddy and head to toe leopard….really?  I’ll put it down to being a new mom and lack of sleep.

  • Lily-Rygh

I would run down a baby in a stroller for that black and white color-blocked dress in the first row, complete with boots and hat.  I don’t know that it’s terribly inventive, but it’s chic as hell!

  • quiltrx

I always get the feeling Rachel’s just designing clothes for herself.  Let’s just say her aesthetic and mine shall never meet.

    • Same, but that said, this is the first collection of hers that has more than one or two pieces I’d actually wear. So either she’s improving slightly or my taste is badly sliding. :

  • Seriously, fanny packs are awesome…and aprons

  • Vanja

Putting slim women in oversized clothes and then using belts to get some shape to it. No, I’m not a fan.

    • galcurly

Fully agreed.  I do not see the appeal.  There are a few good basic pieces — but this is just not interesting or inspiring.

  • It’s ME! ME! ME! ME! ME! BAH NANAS!  Haahahaha.

  • nancylee61

I thought I would like it more, but I really don’t like it. Very sloppy separates, is what it should have been called. No flair, no imagination and some really sloppy pieces.

  • PrunellaV

Where would she be without Annie Hall?

  • aristida_girl

i love it all, and want everything, including the accessories!

  • I don’t get it.  I’ve never got the Rachel Zoe style.  Oversized clothes, oversized belts, oversized hats.  Everyone of these models could be a double for Rachel.  I don’t see anything new and exciting.  And the fanny packs are just silly.

  • ccm800

I feel that she has VERY little range and just rehashes the same things over and over, to the point that I think she is better suited as a stylist than a designer.
