Rachel McAdams in Lanvin

Posted on September 14, 2012

LOVE this look on Miss Rachel.

Rachel McAdams at the Variety Studio during the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival in a Lanvin dress paired with Casadei shoes.

And that’s not something we’re used to saying because she always seems to get things ever so slightly wrong. Not so here. We think this is pretty much head-to-toe perfect. Stylists seem to be defaulting to the pointy-toed pump lately, which means we’ll probably reach our saturation point roughly three weeks from now, but in this case, they really work well with the outfit. Love the hair and we think the low-key route on the jewelry was the right way to go. It is, after all, quite the focus-pulling frock and you wouldn’t want to load up a lot of bling on top of it. Everything would just wind up fighting with each other.

It’s perhaps a skosh too short for a sit-down interview, but other than that, it’s perfect for her. She can really rock that brown and black combo (for which we’ve always been suckers).

Now the big question: Is that the right belt for this dress or should she have gone for something simpler? We go back and forth on it. We like that it brings some edge to the look, but we think it gets a bit lost among all the chevrons and stripes.

I question whether the dress needs a belt at all. And I may be completely off, but she looks strange to me here, oddly proportioned, awkward, and uncomfortable – from her hair to her feet.

      • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

She looks a little terrified, imo, and I think that’s what makes her look “off.”  Plus her hair.  I frequently have issues with her hair, but great dress, meh shoes, not sold on the belt.

        • Sobaika

She needs to go back to brunette.

          • Introspective

seriously. that hair really washes her out, and will prevent her from looking like she owns any outfit she puts on…

that said, the dress is cute.

          • MilaXX

I don’t understand why so many want to be blonde. I find redheads and brunettes much more interesting looks.

            • littlemac8

I don’t either.  She is a much prettier brunette but I do think this is a softer blonde than she has sported in the past.  It’s not quite as harsh as it has been.

          • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

            Yes she does.

      • A. W.

The combination of fabric and pattern makes her chest look concave in the strangest way.

        • MilaXX

as if she is completely flat chested

    • BrooklynBomber

Before I scrolled down, when I thought it was knee length or floor length, I loved it. As a mini, it’s terrible. Well, maybe not terrible. But it’s not right.

      • Clueless_Jock

I thought the same thing. The dress seems too short.

    • nancy

I would have gone with a simpler belt. If it didn’t have one at all, the transition between chevrons and horizontal stripeyness would be too odd. I think it’s a great look for her, love black & brown. It is pretty short, isn’t it?

I think it’s the right belt, just a black or brown one would have just looked like another line on the dress.  I think it works here.  I think a little gold drop earring of sorts would have worked on her ears.  A little something.

    • Alisa Rivera

She really needs a new hair color. She’s very pretty but the color is so bad it pulls attention from everything else.

Dress is okay. Don’t like the length.

    • alyce1213

I love the dress, the belt’s not right for it.  Maybe no belt at all, or something really plain and skinny.
She looks really young and very girly here.

    • nannypoo

I would love to own this dress. The belt seems just fine with it.

    • AudreysMom

What does it tell you that I had to scroll back up and look at the pictures after TLo’s question. I didn’t even notice she had a belt on in my first look at the dress/Rachel here.

      • MilaXX

I did too which tells me it’s a waste to use that belt here. Save if for a look that needs a bit of detail and won’t get lost in the dress.

I’ll take pointy black shoes over ugly nude pumps any day

      Love it. Love the belt

    • Abigail Tseng

She seems to have the same build as Emma Stone, interestingly enough. I can imagine ES succeeding with this look as well. Maybe they should work with the same stylist.

    • MilaXX

I like the look but think she could have gone with a simpler belt. I wish Amy  Adams would wear something like this.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

simpler belt. the little o‘s are o-kay. the bigger, more ovular 0‘s are not 0-kay. okay? okay.

ot0h, this is one of–one of–little guy, looks like paul williams when he sang old fashioned love song on the muppets–anyway, it’s one of his better dresses in quite awhile, i think. not the singing muppetman, the designing muppetman. one of his. really nice looking. the dress, i mean. although the guy has a niceness thing going on w/ him too.

    • Mary229

I love the outfit and I love her.  But every time I see her I wish she was 10 lbs heavier (as she was when she made MeanGirls/ The Notebook) and had her brown hair back.  I know, I feel bad saying that.   But….yeah.

      • alula_auburn

I just re-watched Slings and Arrows on Netflix (as a post-Smash, post-Newsroom palate cleanser) and she is so freaking adorable in the first season.  (And gorgeous as hell.)

(If you love her, you totally need to watch it.  Everyone in the entire world needs to watch Slings and Arrows, though.)

    • tallgirl1204

I like the belt;  it brights some boho to the look which could be a little too….  80s?   But I LOVE LOVE LOVE this look, except for the old lady shoes.

    • http://twitter.com/lemonfreshmoxie Donna Lee

I quite like it and that is saying something because I don’t like her at all.  The belt isn’t offensive from far away but close up it kind of breaks down.

    • Stefanos Mantyla

Perfect dress for her, but the belt looks quite wrong to me. Could have been WERQ material without it.

    • frannyprof

This would be perfect for someone guest-judging a PR episode or doing a late night talk show. Perfect for TV. Just don’t uncross your legs!

    • Lisa Dugan

I actually love the belt with it.  She looks really great here.  As much as the pointy toed shoes have been everywhere lately, they’re such a nice change from the giant clompers and putty shoes that usually abound.

    • kimmeister

Love it but agree that the belt is lost amongst the chevons.

    • enchanted216

Just a skosh too short, I agree.  As much as I prefer her as a red head, this is the prettiest blonde I’ve seen on her.

    • Zippypie

It is just a bit too short, but the look is terrific. Love the belt. Give the whole look a pop of edginess.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

I like the belt/dress combo, it’s working together without blending together. Not crazy about the crispy-looking mall-girl hair. This dress has excellent proportions for her petite figure.

    • Violina23

I think the belt works because it’s the same color scheme, and doesn’t fight with it.

    • bitterk

Love everything but the hair.  The color washes her out a bit.

    • guest2visits

I’m just glad she escaped that awful green bolt of fabric. But this is not really a great look either; the top half doesn’t fit,
doesn’t flatter.  She’s so pretty, yet this dress doesn’t really do that much for her, imo. It’s not horrid, just off.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Love it! And the belt is just right.

ETA: I’m a huge fan of the pointy toe pump – always have been – so this trend doesn’t bother me at all!

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

The dress is killer, but the belt doesn’t really work. The shoes are okay, but I really wish she’d go back to brunette.

    • Jessica O’Connell

Love it and, while the dress may not have needed it, I like the belt.

    • ojosazules

I think the belt ruins the dress.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=837960351 Ashley Wu

        I concur!

    • http://twitter.com/adleredneko Aki

I like the graphic print but the color isn’t doing it for me, maybe if the brown had been some other color, I might like it more.

    • Bozhi

      Love it.

    • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

Perfect, perfect, perfect!  There’s nothing I can even complain about.  Was this really for a radio interview?  How ironic would it be that she has a killer, head to to perfect look for a *radio* interview!

    • Nica Siegel

Kiernan Shipka could play young Rachel McAdams.  Anyone else see it in that first picture?

    • Judih1

wrong belt – no belt was really needed. Don’t like the hair. I guess black pointy pumps are the new silly putty shoes

    • PeaceBang

Very pretty. The belt isn’t quite right but it does add a bit of edgy detail.

    • Larkin21

Love everything (including the belt) but I do miss her auburn hair. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to her as a blond. That said, the hair still does look great.

    • LilyPad

I love the neckline and the unexpected use of striping. I think the belt is a really nice punctuation piece, and it provides just the right amount of kick. All in all, very understated and chic.

Coulda been a tad bit longer.
