PR: Judging the Judges, Week 8

Posted on September 10, 2012

Darlings, we didn’t forget about that little show that launched our careers, we promise you. We’ll always take time out from our busy fashion weeking to bitch about the judges’ outfits a little.

Anna Sui in Anna Sui

That is a really adorable dress, we have to say. Pairing it with that jewelry and what looks to be a fairly kickass pair of boots takes it to a nicely goth place, which suits her style to a T. The only thing that disappoints is that cardigan, which looks a little sad. We don’t mind the coverage, but everything else looks so stylish in comparison.

This Week’s Score: 4.5/5

Previous Guest Judge Scores:
Bonnie Brooks: 3/5
Alice Temperley: 5/5
Joanna Coles: 4.25/5
Rachel Roy: 4/5
Hayden Pannetiere: 4/5
Krysten Ritter: 4.25/5
Dylan Lauren: 4/5
Lauren Graham:4/5
Pat Field: 4/5

Nina Garcia in Gucci

Gucci Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Abbey Lee Kershaw

That jacket is ridiculously kickass. And La Nina styled it perfectly, by ensuring nothing else was going to fight with it; simple top, simple pants, simple shoes. It could almost be called business-like, if people normally conducted business in gold fringe.

This Week’s Score: 4.75/5

Cumulative S10 Score: 4.375/5

Insider-y gossip! We chatted with Nina yesterday before the DKNY show:

And tweeted the above picture with the joke that Lorenzo is posing with his sister, Nina Garcia (which prompted responses from a lot of people who don’t get humor on the internet: “LORENZO IS NINA’S BROTHER?!?!? I HAD NO IDEA!!!!)

Anyway, we chatted about Nina’s outfits. She said the chain mail YSL she wore last week was light and easy to wear, despite how it looked. She also laughed and said that as the season goes on, her choices for judgewear went down, and we’re probably not going to give her many high scores in the future.

But anyone who can smile like that when she sees us is gonna be hard to bitch about.

Heidi Klum in Roberto Cavalli

Roberto Cavalli Printed Stretch Matte Satin Silk Dress

We don’t know. It’s not awful, but there are much better dresses out there doing this kind of pattern-mixing. Basically, it comes down to whether you like this print or not. We don’t. And the flat hair has got to stop, Miss Klum.

This Week’s Score: 3.75/5

Cumulative S10 Score: 3.496/5

WINNER, WEEK FOUR: Nina!

CUMULATIVE SCORE LEADER: Nina!

I have to agree about Anna Sui’s cardi. I just looked drab. I wanted a different cover up, if she really felt she wanted one.  Nina?  Slammed it outta the park again.  Heidi just keeps looking a trifle desperate these days.

      • merciblahblah

         A trifle desperate indeeeeed!!!!

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

So far the worst offense was that gag-worthy, ill fitting, glittery bedsheet/toga thing she wore to the PR Finale. She managed to make her super toned bod look saggy, and baggy, and ill proportioned, which it most certainly is not.

          • l_c_ann

It would be an interesting thing to have a Heidi faceoff/death match determining which Heidi clothes have been the worse this season. Let her outfits compete, maybe have a bra v no bra division.
The ill fitting PJs did have the lead, but how do you measure depressed vs. slutty and over the hill?

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I don’t percieve her as over the hill by a long shot.  She’s just trying far too hard to remind us endlessly about her uber-hotness.  Its tiresome. Its time to start introducing some things to her wardrobe that are more on track for a mature woman, with a serious career in business. Any time she remarks about how hoochie something looks, I think, “glass houses, Heidi”

          • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I must disagree — at least the gold thing made an effort.  The worst was the snakeskin pajama set.  I cannot believe that numerous people saw her prior to filming and no one thought to tell her that as the host and executive producer, she could hold up filming for ten minutes so she could at least get dressed.

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Ah, but when you are the host and Executive Producer, no one says anything to you but, “Yes, Ma’am”

            • Call me Bee

And I thought the worst thing was that shiny green dress at the PR opening in Time Square.  It was so tight that we could see her tummy and belly-button impression.  Ugh!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

I agree, I’m not sure what would have worked better though, a leather jacket maybe? A simple one, without straps and buckles.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Something with more structure to it, I think.  So a leather jacket might have been just the thing.

          • SouthernGirlRena

This comment may seem ridiculous since it is based on logic instead of fashion, but I keep hearing runway day is hours and hours in an unairconditioned building in the middle of summer.  Heidi seems to be the only one dressed appropriately.  How have the rest of them not melted into big puddles under those lights?  That said, I can’t work up love or hate for Heidi’s outfit, it’s fine, Anna looks adorable but should lose the sweater and boots, and I want whoever does Nina’s hair to do my highlights.

My stubbornly-practical mind is a curse.

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Ah, the requirements of maintaining the fantasy. Fortunately they are only required to be seated. Even the designers are just standing. And you do get used to the temperature.

      • MoHub

         A trifle?

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

One does try to be diplomatic, to a degree.

      • SapphoPoet

        I thought Heidi looked tired.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I can only imagine how hectic her sked must be.

        • Spicytomato1

I think the light makeup and flat hair contributed to that impression. Combined with the slip of a dress, she came off as oddly “naked” to me, especially in comparison to her fellow judges.

      • http://twitter.com/marieldrucker Marie Drucker

As a cardigan-loving librarian, I think Anna’s is a step above the normal cardi. See the bit of sheer fabric on the sleeves? I kind of love it.

    • http://twitter.com/sebwfu Shannon Beamer

I adore Nina’s jacket — and I’d conduct business in gold fringe ANY DAY.  Also, her shoes are gorgeous.  Simple and chic, and I want them.

      • Introspective

I know right? Gold fringe makes the mundane happenings of life waaay more interesting. If was like Nina and could afford Gucci and YSL and others in my closet, but couldnt wear them more than once in public appearances, Id wear them again when I think no one’s looking… to get gas, go to the bank, run to Whole Foods, pick up the kid, etc. Id be the fiercest mom on the block.

Clearly Nina killed this round. Luv huh

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I think the shoes are just a little naked – I really like them, but perched front & centre on a stool like that she might as well be barefoot.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

Hello Ven, you twit! THIS is how to dress a curvy woman~! Go Anna Sui!

Nina was just perfect from head to toe and Heidi has to stop shopping out of the remainder bins. That was one ugly dress and the flat ironed hair didn’t help any.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

If Nina and Lorenzo are siblings and Lorenzo is Papa, does that make her Auntie Nina? (Yes, I know they aren’t related.)

      • Sobaika

Speaking of toe… out of genuine curiosity, how does one walk in the heels Nina is wearing?

They’re cute. I’ve tried on similar pairs. And I feel like my feet will slide out immediately and my bum will thud to the floor in a quick minute.

        • Maria Rosenfire

They require excellent balance, awesome fit, and little grippy shoe inserts at the ball of your foot. Also luck, and possibly sacrifices to the Fashion Gods.

        • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

Silly girl, she doesn’t have to WALK!

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

Ohhhhh, maybe Nina could get **carried** everywhere she needs to go. Like Anna Wintour in one of Tim Gunn’s posts. Better yet, a sedan chair with four hunky guys to lift her. :-)

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

        Word

    • Maria Rosenfire

I wish Anna Sui had gone with a kicky well-fitted blazer or sequined bolero-type jacket, but aside from that she looks fabulous, and I covet her dress. She was also fairly useful during judging, which I appreciated.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I am always much happier when the guest judge is someone from the Fashion industry.  They’re always much more incisive and helpful with their critique.  Less about the witty sound bite and more about substance that can help a designer move forward.

        • Lilithcat

I so agree.  It’s good to hear an analysis that consists of more than “I would wear that!”

          • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Who knows where Disqus put my comment about Anna Sui as a guest judge – I thought I was replying to kiltdntiltd, but it seems not to have worked. Anyway, I said almost the same thing except that I wish she’d given a more technical critique instead of the (I suspect) producer suggested thing about collaboration.

            • janetjb

The idea of collaborating needs to be hammered through those thick skulls.

            • 3boysful

Not gonna happen, sadly.  Either the producers purposely cast low-EQ designers, or, more likely, the competition turns even the good ones into characters from Lord of the Flies.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBFH32YG44LIIZYLSQPMBXMYCU Sarah

Yes. I told my bf that was the cutest dress ever, and he (is a man, and wears tank tops, cargo shorts, and flip-flops almost exclusively, mind you) said “Oh, do you want it? I’ll get it for you for Christmas!” Bless his heart. He’d have to give up a month’s pay for that cute dress. Sweet fella.

        • khh1138

          A perfect man.

      • fashionzombie

Anna Sui looked fab, despite the cardi. I don’t even hate it, though I get what other BKs are saying about a higher-impact jacket item.

    • SewingSiren

They do look as though they could be siblings.

    • Judy_S

I thought Heidi’s dress just looked vulgar. I know that vulgar is what she’s usually going for, but it wasn’t a fun vulgar in the “pink discoball” style. That dress has arrows pointing to the cracks.
I would give Nina a 5. She is as perfect as can be.
Anna Sui was pretty compelling, but agreed re. the cardigan. If she is designing the dress she ought to be able to do something better to go with.

      • 3boysful

Heidi’s unfortunate dress looks more like a cheesy nightgown from the markdown rack at Marshalls (not to knock markdown rack or Marshalls, but sometimes there’s stuff that really belongs there).

        • Kate4queen

I got a very nice Michael Kors dress at Marshalls down from $180 to $45 last week! But it was a rare find… :)

          • Call me Bee

Agreed.  I found a Michael Kors houndstooth blazer at TJ Maxx last year for under $50, but you have to sift through a lot of dreck.  Fortunately, I love doing that!  Same with Goodwill.  Scored Calvin Klein trousers a few months ago for $6.99!!!  In perfect condition!

    • Elaine Lang

Heidi’s dress is reminiscent of Ed Hardy.

Your score, therefore, is TOO HIGH.

      • ballerinawithagun

You are so right with the Ed Hardy.

      • ampg

THAT’s what I was trying to think of!  Exactly!  Plus it gives her uni-boob.  Knock at least a half-point off that score.

    • Funkykatt

I want a brother like Lorenzo. One that could help me when shopping at Macy’s for accessories (I can’t afford Nordstrom). It wouldn’t matter if he could fix household stuff or not, I need help at the mall.

    • formerlyAnon

Ms. Sui’s cardigan did take the outfit down. Warning to all of us who feel we don’t want to show too much (arms, flesh, skin, whatever) and don’t have an array of fabulous cover ups on hand.

Ms. Garcia: No clue what her magazine editor duties are but she sure is swell at the “be a public presence for the firm” stuff.

Ms. Klum: I think she deserved 4/5 simply because she wasn’t over the short, tight & shiny line and she managed to wear the animal print I hate in a fabric I don’t hate. Hair is less than it should & could be, though.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

Heidi’s dress didn’t work on camera; the purple spot in the middle was really focus-pulling.

    • merciblahblah

I, too, would wear Nina’s jacket in a hot minute. As for Heidi? Heidi, Heidi, Heidi…I typically think she looks gorgeous no matter whether I like what she’s actually wearing or not, but this week? Yeesh. Not so much.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Judge-wise, I was underwhelmed by Anna Sui. Usually I look to the fashion designer guest judge to give a more technical critique than “I’d wear it!” It really felt like she’d been coached by the producers to harp on the theme of collaboration.

    • jmorino08

I want that Anna Sui dress in the worst way!! So cute!!

    • Pants_are_a_must

Anna Sui – GIMME THAT DRESS

Nina Garcia – Snaps in Z formation

      Heidi Klum – of course.

    • alyce1213

I’m guessing the .25 off was for Nina’s never-changing hair.  Couldn’t you have just whispered a sweet nothing in her ear about it?  A cut, some nice layers, a little wave … something.  Everything else, so perfect.
Her sandals (love!) are so minimal, it takes bravery and gorgeous feet, which it looks like she has, to wear them.

Heidi, Heidi, Heidi, your hair is ridiculous.

      • khh1138

Adore the perfect minimal sandal.  I’m in awe of anyone who can walk in heels, period – I would only be able to sit there and pose in those shoes and then kick them off if I had to actually walk.  No support anywhere – Nina must have excellent balance!  Well, obviously and of course she does.

    • http://masquedbunny.tumblr.com masquedbunny

Love Anna Sui’s dress. In fact, WANT Anna Sui’s dress. The cardi *is* sad. Maybe a leather jacket instead to go with the boots… I don’t know; *something* harder.

Maybe it’s because we’re only getting the far-off view, but Heidi’s dress looks like a zebra with open-heart surgery.

      • JaneDC

        Re Heidi’s dress: exactly!

    • SapphoPoet

Nina looked wonderful. And I loved Anna Sui’s outfit and her lip color was fabulous. I didn’t like Heidi’s dress very much; did anyone else think she looked really tired? She just didn’t seem to have her usual sparkle this week.

    • http://twitter.com/connectinglines Me Again

Hmmm… Anyone else think T-Lo are giving some grade inflation to the guest judges?  I mean, Nina consistently deserves her high scores, but no so sure about the guest judges…

    • JaneDC

All I could see of the dress Anna Sui was wearing was the fabric, which was cute. If you asked me anything else about the dress, like the shape or details, I wouldn’t know. I wish we could have seen what it looked like without the cardigan. But I loved her because she was calm and thoughtful in her comments.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I thought she was an excellent judge.

        • Scarlet39

She really was.  I love when there is a guest judge who actually adds something other than “it looks expensive” or “I’d wear it”.

        • khh1138

I thought she was great, too. You could tell she was speaking from experience and I loved her self-deprecating sense of humor (“we all have these big egos but we need to learn to work together”).  I thought she really went above and beyond to give the contestants some valuable life advice, like a mentor.  If only all the judges were like that, it would make the fishbowl experience really worth it for the contestants! As it is, sometimes I have to wonder what are they getting out of it other than bad publicity. (Like in the case of Ven, whooo boy, he should have stayed anonymous.  I’m starting to think the same about Elena.)

      • ampg

I agree, and in fact I thought she’d get a much lower score for the shapelessness of it.  I personally didn’t like the print much, either.

I wish they’d have more designer guest judges; they always give the best critiques.

    • Judy_J

Once again, Nina brings it home.

    • spooki C

Heidi’s dress is so Jersey. All she needs is jet black hair, raccoon eye makeup and orange skin. Gotta love her, don’t ever change.

      • kittenwithaquip

Oh, she has the orange skin. Not quite as bad as the Duchess, but still ghastly.

    • http://twitter.com/ParrotTalkBack Ana R.

Heidi in animal print pjs again.

    • Anathema_Device

I thought Heidi’s dress was ridiculously unflattering on her, esp when she was standing on the runway. I’d drop her score to lower than a 3.

Do we think Nina was sandbagging? You know, trying to lower your expectations for future outfits then BAM! wow you silly? She is crafty, that one. :-)

Cannot believe how adorable the pic of Lorenzo & Nina is. So cute!

    • crash1212

Agree. Nina is killing it this season. Wish Anna had popped a color with her cardi. Loved Heidi’s shoes.

    • PinkLemon

knew it was roberto cavalli the second i saw it. dislike.

    • tignor

Sorry, but Heidi’s dress looked like a zebra print dress with a uterus and fallopian tubes printed at the top to me.

    • Scarlet39

Plain and simple, that Cavalli dress looks cheap.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

      Nice bathing suit Heidi

      • sisterb67

I had bathing suit that looked almost exactly like that when I was about 10!

    • ASK26

      Nina’s jacket  – blah

Anna Sui’s boots??  It that what she is wearing – serious cannot tell what is going on.  I love black but to paraphrase the judges – if you cannot see the details it is a waste

      • kimmeister

I didn’t care for Nina’s jacket either.  I thought it looked like Chico’s on crack.

    • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

I mean, these are the same readers that hound you guys for tweeting ‘spoilers’ of the Project Runway finale runway show. smh.

    • Bill Curtis

Heidi was wearing Joe Hardy’s Rorschach test.

    • Tracy_Flick

I guess I’m the only one who thought Nina’s jacket looked like a pinata.

      • formerlyAnon

Oh, I saw the resemblance, but I still liked the jacket.

    • Joyce VG

Lorenzo you and NINA together are adorable!  OMG! You are canoodling with Nina!

    • http://twitter.com/mk_patter Megano!

Oh man, I hope the producers didn’t make Anna Sui put that cardigan on because HEAVEN FORBID a woman not the size of Heidi is going to show some shoulder, and that’s why it’s so sad.

      • formerlyAnon

         They wouldn’t dare. Would they?

    • http://twitter.com/wonderdivaEtsy wonderdivaEtsy

If I had Nina’s hair, I’d never change it, either.  Ever.  I love her hair.

But Heidi’s hair, in that last photo, makes her face look ridiculously wide and square, sort of like Ben Roethlisberger.  No way should I ever be thinking about Big Ben when I look at Heidi’s face.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

      Nina wins, hands down.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/FEP56YB4DUIXBWSLIMSSSGQHWY jimmack

TLO: Do you ever tell Nina how much we love her? I think of Nina as the real star of that show.

    • sashaychante

Wish we could have seen Anna Sui’s dress a little better…that cardi really covered it up.  From what I can tell, the dress was really cute.  Could not agree more with the comments on Heidi’s flat hair.  It’s making her look old (which she is not) and tired.  I like her hair best when it’s a little bed-heady and tousled.  Major jacket envy regarding Ms. Garcia’s look…LUV IT!

    • LesYeuxHiboux

That dress is downright demure for Heidi. I don’t mind the print, though if she wants to wear something in this vein she ought to just make arrangements with Mondo.

Nina’s cha-cha jacket and naked shoes are cracking me up in a good way. She really is terribly fabulous. I’d be afraid to attend an editorial meeting with her due to sheer intimidation (and I probably have a good six inches on her in height).

Love Anna Sui’s dress and boots. So her. The cardigan looks a little faded and somehow the limp little chiffon cuff and pocket detail make is sadder (and not in a goth way).

    • StillGary

Ha ha, great pic of the sibs — but I’ve thought Tom could be Laura Bennet’s half-cousin.

    • Zippypie

Anna’s dress is fantastic – I wonder if she was cold in the studio and they threw that cardi on her because it’s just not up to par with the rest of the outfit.

      Nina reigns supreme!

    • Olive Tree

      Adorbs!

    • holdmewhileimnaked

anna sui’s dress’ fabric is fabulous. but, sadly, the dress itself added as much volume to her as if it were created by ven budhu. i know what she usually looks like–she’s one of my favorite living designers–& it isnt that. otoh, if she dressed herself that way as a political statement then more power to her. i dont know. i hope so. i like that people still think she looks great, still wanna buy the dress. that really says something about the way the culture is changing. & the thing it says is fabulous.

i cant even remember what the other two [three] were wearing. a jacket, i think, that was unmemorable & another animal print dress, one created in what was not roberto cavalli’s shining hour. ah well.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

I wish Nina’s hair were as fierce as her clothes. The model wins for me this week.

    • Buffy

Nina wins it again.  And I adore that photo of Lo & Nina!  You need to put that one on your mantel :-D

    • SophiaPehawkins

I saw the Gucci model, and thought, what a kickass jacket. Great minds and all that.

Personally, I love Nina’s hair and would cut a bitch for it. She’s that person that shouldn’t switch it up, because it’s the perfect look for her.

    • e jerry powell

      Zebra meets crosstitch?

    • Call me Bee

How are Nina’s shoes staying on her feet?  Is there a tiny ankle strap?  If so, I WANT.  Bad.

    • ccm800

I really realy really think Nina’s hair needs an update – its so 80’s stripey and kinda crispy looking.

    • http://twitter.com/SparklyCasanova UglyCasanova

Love Nina’s jacket, super kickass!  And Lorenzo and Nina together looks totally adorbs!

    • guest2visits

I thought Anna Sui’s star dress was very cute, I don’t know how, but I didn’t even notice the boots until these pics.
I liked Heidi’s fine until she sat; then it was just too short and too tight all over again.
And I would have liked Nina’s better with the jacket zipped up like the model’s. Don’t like the shoes/sandals.

    • libraangel

I DON’T like Anna’s dress because of the goofy stars – better for Suri Cruise’s age!!! Nina fabulously chic; Heidi OY!!!!!!!!

    • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

Lorenzo, how cool!  Nina looks so genuinely happy to see you!  And Garcia kills it this week, as always.

    • pdquick

What was going on with Heidi’s makeup? I thought she looked like Tan Mom.

    • http://twitter.com/TMamBo Therese Bohn

And Nina was wise enough not to wear those gold fringed booties (or were they sandals?) I saw in one of your columns recently!  She knows the jacket was enough oomph.

    • aristida_girl

Nina is the awesomest! I love that jacket….

    • http://jeannyh.myopenid.com/ jeannyh

Nina = fabulous.  Heidi = Rorshach blot with flowers.

    • rorschach1992

Sui wins this one. Adorable outfit, don’t mind the sweater in the least. Plus the boots were a nice tough counterpoint to the stars. I love those boots 5/5

Nina: I don’t know I might be the only one but I’m just not a fan of that jacket. The sleeves reminded me of a feather duster I cleaned with not long ago, only with some gold added. I actually think the pants and top would have looked better alone. Her hair will never do anything for me. 2/5

Heidi: Like, not quite love, a perfectly chic dress that photographs well and looked good on TV. Great shoes though. Didn’t mind her hair this week. 4/5

    • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Does Anna Sui have a plus line? I have a couple of friends who would kill for her frock.

    • Carlos Abreu

Heidi’s hair the past two weeks has been awful. Whoever gave her that razor-y cut should be shot. Her hair doesn’t have enough volume to pull that off.

The self-tanner is overdone, too. But I guess sitting next to His Orangeness, she’s trying to blend in.
