PR: Judging the Judges, Week 11

Posted on September 28, 2012

It’s mommy vs. mommy vs. mommy this week darlings, with The Duchess once again getting disqualified for being boring. And speaking of boring, what’s up with the second all-B&W panel in a row? At least there was a little bit of bling this time.

Which mommy kicked the most ass? Let’s assess.

Heidi Klum

We thought that neckline was enormously distracting on camera and Heidi REALLY needs to get over her preference for two slits when one is more than enough. But the shape suits her, we like her hair and makeup (both of which have been dicey all season) and the jewelry makes a nice touch without going overboard.

This Week’s Score: 4/5

Cumulative S10 Score: 3.47/5

Hilary Duff

Whoever told her sequined stretch pants were a good idea for a television appearance where she’d be seated the whole time should be set on fire. The white jacket’s not really her friend either. It’s not a terrible look, but it’s trying way too hard and it’s not the most flattering thing she could have chosen.

This Week’s Score: 3.75/5

Previous Guest Judge Scores:
Debra Messing: 3.75/5
Anya Ayoung-Chee: 4.25/5
Mondo Guerra: 3.5/5
Anna Sui: 4.5/5
Bonnie Brooks: 3/5
Alice Temperley: 5/5
Joanna Coles: 4.25/5
Rachel Roy: 4/5
Hayden Pannetiere: 4/5
Krysten Ritter: 4.25/5
Dylan Lauren: 4/5
Lauren Graham:4/5
Pat Field: 4/5

Nina Garcia in A.L.C. (Blazer) and Balmain (Pants)

Miss Nina has been opting for too many black jackets this season and not wearing enough of the statement jewelry she does so well, but we have to admit, those pants are freaking fabulous. She’s also defaulting to the black pumps a bit more than we’d like. Still, for chicness alone, she takes it once again.

This Week’s Score: 4.25/5

Cumulative S10 Score: 4.226/5

  • The Duchess for the win!

I hate Heidi’s illusion peter pan collar, Hillary looks like ass (pretty ass, but still) and Nina’s pants look a wee bit ugly to me.

    •  Is that what that’s supposed to be? All I could see was a partial Batman distress signal. It’s also a skosh tight on her.

I don’t think anyone won this week. They all have major issues.

      • If my eye could somehow view her dress as a Batman reference, the nerd in me would promptly approve. Sadly, the flesh collar cannot be unseen.

        • Oh I kind of like it. Just in case I forget where HEidi’s face is, I can look at her collar and it points me there!

    • kattyatlaw

I was so entirely sure it was a Heidi-flesh-colored peter pan color. I could even see it! Horrible optical illusion.

      • piecesofconfetti

Ditto. I spent far too many minutes staring at my screen deciding whether it was the exact same shade as her skin, or a weird reverse peter pan.

        • THIS! I was first convinced, because of the line of her clavicles, that this must be an ill-conceived flesh-toned collar. Then I realized it was NO COLLAR at all, and while I give props to the designer for such a masterful illustion, ew. THEN I had to deal with the fact that each time Heidi was onscreen, I was checking to see if the pointy bit was going to give her an impromptu tracheotomy. That is too much to go through just looking at one black dress.

          • adnama79

It needed piping across the top or something – the illusion was cool, but wrecked every time she turned her head and it looked pointy deathly to me, too.  Maybe a 1/8″ bit of black piping around the top of the invisible collar would have alleviated that.

      • khh1138

After I read your comment, I went back and looked again, and now I see the illusion, too!  It’s like that 2 heads-in-the-vase illusion.  I can’t look away.  Really, Heidi, this takes Teutonic cruelty to a new level.

    • random_poster

I agree about annointing the Duchess winner.  I thought Nina’s pants were all-black until I saw them here, but the trim doesn’t do anything for me.

  • Judy_S

Oh, Heidi’s neckline was so distracting! I kept wanting to  apply a bit of maternal spit to that bit of cloth and make it lie down properly. (She looked so good otherwise!)

  • SpillinTea

Nina wins as usual. Hilary looks like a fishy drag queen, and Heidi looks…like Heidi.

  • janetjb

I wonder why Nina has chosen less interesting clothes recently.

    • She did tell TLo at fashion week that her clothes got less exciting as the season goes on.  I guess we are seeing that now.

  • Sobaika

Heidi’s necline is freaking me out. I kept on thinking it was a high-collar in orange.

    • mhleta

It looks like a butt to me, which unfortunately literally turns her into a butt head.

  • kittwin

Except for the stripe down the pants, Nina is essentially the female Michael Kors, so she’s really only winning by default this week.

  • Call me Bee

I didn’t notice while watching, but seeing all the judges all in blakc–looks rather dour, no?  For a baby challenge?
Anyhoo–I could not tell what Heidi’s neckline was all about.  Now I see it’s cut out.  That, with the two slits, it just looks like someone in her household was running with scissors.
Nina, as always, looks chic and put together.  I saw Guilina Rancic wearing the white version of those pants on Fashion Police.  Love them!
Ms Duff looks as though she’s wearing the same clothes she wore as a teenager on the Disney Channel.

  • NDC_IPCentral

Thumbs down on black for the judges – with these ladies shot only in sitting positions, they definitely need color and impact unless they want to convey “shy and retiring,” which is not in any of their briefing books.

Ms. Garcia’s hair was nice last week – sloppy and spaniel this.

Frau Klum’s outfits all communicate some desperation and fatigue this season.  She really needs to assess herself dispassionately, but that may be beyond her capabilities.

Hillary Duff is basically an unknown to me, but her outfit, for a celeb, was almost insulting.  Her comments, of course, were entirely dismissable.  I guess Frau Klum and B-M aren’t having much success in roping in industry designers or industry execs for judging duties.  That failure shows up repeatedly this season, and it’s not a good development.

  • Judy_J

Those pants Nina is wearing are freakin’ awesome.  Wish I had me a pair.

    • formerlyAnon

I want the jacket as well.

  • Heidi should get points off for the weird eye makeup at the beginning of the episode. It foreshadowed the weird neckline at the end.

    • mhleta

The white high lighter inside her lower lids?? Really weird choice for a children’s store shoot. I figured it must have been early in the morning and she probably needed something to open her eyes a bit. But the effect was really strange.

  • EverybodysStarling

First thought: Heidi’s neck got its own boobs!
Second thought: Oh no, it’s just Batman crawling up Heidi’s boobs.

  • I second the batman distress signal.  Love Nina’s pants. Hillary probably had no right to judge anyone in that outfit.

  • granddelusion

Heidi’s dress is too tight, and pulls every which way. It also carves some unattractive hip bumps.

    • mhleta

Yes, it was really glaring on screen! I notice they try to shoot around unflattering angles, but sometimes she makes it impossible. This dress was a full two sizes too small on the bottom.

  • joe_tey83

Nina can pretty much be declared the winner at this point.

  • Heidi’s neckline looks like a device for preventing you from falling asleep whilst driving. One droop of the head and OUCH!!

  • Cracking up at all the Batman comments! I kept thinking if she makes the wrong move her neckline is going to stab her throat. Verrrrry distracting.

  • Love Nina’s pants. Love and cannot possibly afford.

Hate the neckline on Heidi’s dress. There’s some weird optical illusion going on with the waist too.

I like Hilary’s blouse (she thought, damning with faint praise).

  • Wow, I really think everyone looks awful this week.  Between the peter pan illusion collar making my eyes twitch and the sequined stretch pants – who let these people appear in public like this?

    My heavens.

    • makeityourself

Haha! And they are the judges of others. It’s really very funny. Almost as funny as Hilary’s black satin ribbon choker. What’s up with that?

  • Rand Ortega

I’m currently obsessed w/ Balmain & the line’s GORGEOUS new baby designer, Olivier Rousteing ,so Nina’s pants made me squee w/ delight. The blazer is also fantastic (the way she rolled the sleeves– fantastic!), but I absolutely agree– a statement piece at the neck would’ve really made this ensemble sing. 4.75
Heidi– Same old same. A point for not being shiny. 3
Hilary– She has terrific gams, a cute shift would’ve been much better. Everything looks too small. 3.25

  • fnarf

    Heidi’s neckline gets a 0/5 from me.

  • Heidi’s collar was the same color as her skin! Distracting was the word for it. If it was in blue or another color it would have been cute enough.
I want Nina’s pants so bad.
I spent the entire judging section wondering who Hilary Duff was (I was getting the laundry out of the dryer during the introductions). I kept thinking, ‘Is that Jessica Simpson?’ ‘Did Miley Cyrus have a baby?’ ‘They already had that Hayden Pantsarehere person on so who the hell is this waste of space.’ And everytime she said, ‘I would put my son in that’ I think sales plummeted at Babies R’ Us. I just don’t want to shop where that tacky woman shops. ewwww…Nice hair and choker Hilary. Your shoes are hiddy.

    • Kate4queen

i spent half the time staring at Heidi and trying to work out if that was a collar matching her skin or that the neck of the dress was cut in that shape!

    • Anathema_Device

I’m pretty sure that’s a cut-out on Heidi’s neckline. I kept staring at it during the episode in an “Is it or isn’t it?” kind of way. No question on its ugliness, though. It IS.

    • megohd

Ugh … the almost choker! Does not work on a woman who’s not super-thin with a gracefully long neck. (As someone with a round face and short neck, I know of what I speak.)

And this: “Hilary– … Everything looks too small. 3.25” YES! Everything is too small.

  • hughman

“Heidi Heidi Heidi Heidi… Heidi Heidi Heidi Heidi… Batdress!”

  • Trisha26

For some reason I missed Heidi’s slits last night! Nina for the win!

  • Pants_are_a_must

Nina is essentially the chicest woman on tv, possibly only rivaled by Gina Torres.

    • MilaXX

I have no idea who styles her for Suits, but she shuts it down every week.

  • Anathema_Device

Hated Heidi’s dress and the cut-out collar detail. Awful. Also hated the ribbon choker on Duff. Her whole outfit was terrible, but for some reason that choker offended me on a personal level.

LOVE Nina’s pants. But, yes, she could have stepped it up a little, but she is so obviously the clear winner here.

  • Joy

You are too kind. Hilary deserved a -3.75

  • greyhoundgirl

When Heidi walked out I immediately hated that neckline.  I cringed as she got stabbed in the throat.  If this was an in or out post it would be so out–can’t believe you can give a 4.  If I can’t swallow when looking at a dress then I’d give it a 2.  Can’t believe this bothered me so much but it did!

    • Winter_White

Same reaction here.  That sharp puncture-point, right at the most vulnerable part of her throat…!

  • mjude

I didnt realize hiliray’s pants were sequined stretch pants…LOL

    • Call me Bee

Sequined stretch pants would make one feel so glamourous whilst cleaning out the cat box, no?  Because one should never leave home in stretch pants, sequined or not!  LOL…

  • MissAnnieRN

I’m so surprised that I scrolled through all 38 of the comments and not a single one of the BK’s had any ire directed towards those hooves Hillary Duff is sporting.  YUCK.  She may as well have attached actual golden horseshoes to a pair of pumps.

    • meowing

Agree–those are some gosh-awful shoes.  But then, maybe she chose gosh-awful shoes to go with gosh-awful pants?

    • MilaXX

between th chker, the collar and those awful pants, by the time I got to the shoes I was done.

  • momjamin

So what I want to know…are you grading Heidi and Nina based on last week work but saying it’s just this week, or is there an unspoken bias? 😉

  • Newsflash!!  Everyone is wearing black!!  How unusual!

  • I kind of love the sequined pants myself, but then I’m all about the glitter.

  • nannypoo

Heidi’s dress looked like it lost its Peter Pan collar. Really an awful look but fabulous compared to Hillary Duff, whoever she might be. Oh, and did she mention she has a son?

  • formerlyAnon

No quibbles this week, gentlemen. (Yah, I’m sure you’re sooo relieved.)

I liked the Peter Pan cutout on Ms. Klum’s dress, but the slits ruined the effect. (By turning a mildly witty detail into just one more thing done to the dress to show more Klum skin).

  • marilyn

I really like Heidi’s hair.  It is modern, young, but not trying to be a surfer/teenager.  This style has polish and is youthful.  She looks great.   I always laugh because Heidi seems incapable of taking a bad picture.  The others in these photos always have off looks.  Even when her head is turned from the camera, she still looks great.

  • MarinaCat

I’ve never seen Hillary Duff as a brunette, but I’m thinking she’d be a knockout with [what probably is her natural color] brown hair. The blond just doesn’t work for her.

    • MilaXX

post Lizzie McGuire she did a movie in which she was supposed to be a Russian hooker. (I kid you not) She was brunette for that and looked okay.

    • khh1138

This is what I say to everyone who dyes their hair blonde.  Except for maybe Dan Stevens, and that might be a tie.

  • ZZZZZZ…….again!

  • bitchybitchybitchy

Whoever told her sequined stretch pants were a good idea for a television appearance where she’d be seated the whole time should be set on fire.  YES!  Did Duff think she was judging a baby beauty pageant in Vegas? Those pants are hilariously inappropriate.
As usual, Nina sets the standard for judging the other ladyjudges.

  • They were all rather boring this week, so much so, that it’s almost not worth picking a winner. Except that Heidi’s dress has that irritating collar. Surprisingly, the sequined pants on Hilary don’t bother me as much as the white jacket. SO I guess Nina wins by default – there’s nothing that actively irritates me in her look.

  • TomBord

Geeeesh poor Missy Mermaid Hair and her sparkly pantaloons! A little harsh considering the week that dreary Temperley chick showed up in that beaded embroidered printed sheer sparkly bed spread caftan.

  • elemspbee

that’s a might generous score for Hillary Duff’s terrible get up.
Heidi’s dress is quite cute but so uncharacteristically Heidi (even with the two slits). She is so covered, that must be her version of a wrapped up mummy!

  • Dhammadina

I feel like all is right with the world after I read your weekly Judging the Judges post –as usual funny and right on (and I love Nina ‘s pants especially).  Now I can finish the work week.

  • SewingSiren

I bought a pair of former judge , Isabel Toledo’s  shoes at Payless (on clearance). My god I love them so much , they almost made parent night at the elementary and middle/high school bearable.  Almost .

  • guest2visits

All three looks annoy me. Heidi with a neckline that didn’t work. Nina’s too droopy neckline resembled Sonjia’s baby-shirt.
And then there’s Hilary’s pants, shoes, top, jacket, choker….

  • Susan Crawford

Heidi’s dress just had way too much happening: the inverse widow’s peak at the neckline and the carwash-panel skirt down below.

Nina’s pants need to be in my closet ASAP. She can keep the jacket.

Hillary, Hillary, Hillary. “Fashion is refusal”, darling. It really is.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Hilary Duff has had an unseemly love for chokers, scarves, and chunky necklaces since the Lizzie McGuire days. Hilary, beautiful girl, I love you but you have no neck. Choker-type details are not your friend.

Heidi’s weird negative-space Peter-Pan collar makes me uncomfortable. Nina is fine…little dull, though.

    • MilaXX

and really anything she wore as Lizzie McGuire is not something she should still be wearing.

  • l_c_ann

I think La Nina’s very expensive pants are wasted this week by her choice of black top and black (?) blouse.  I wondered if she were wearing a limp woven gold overlong tie belt.  Those pants deserve to be seen in an impressive location (which isn’t the PR runway).
Heidi, Heidi, Heidi, too tight, too tight, too tight.  What is the matter with buying/borrowing clothes that fit but don’t constrict?
Hilary  is in the cold seat.  Heidi often has on the least clothes, the guest judges sitting under what must be the only airconditioning duct all too often hide what ever interesting they might be wearing under bland white sweaters or jackets…..gotta be the air conditioning.

  • MilaXX

Hilary Duff should not be wearing things she wore 10 years ago as a Disney kid.
I don’t mind Heidi’s negative Peter Pan collar, but the double slits are one element too many.
Nina’s pants are fierce, but she looks better with great tops and/or statement jewelry.

  • Thathoodwink

In the coming attractions for next week, I saw Heidi wearing something gold, tight, and shiny….don’t know if it was short as it was a two-second shot of her from the bustline up….”of course”. ;oD

  • quiltrx

Quick story…my little sis, now 25, thought when she was small that the doll P.J. Sparkles was called “Jeetsie Sparkles” on the commercial.  In my family, anything that is way too glittery or bedazzled is “jeetsie sparkles.”

All that to say…Duff REALLY should have stayed away from Jeetsie Sparkles pants.

  • write_light

And then we saw Heidi in the previews D: D: D: D:

  • ZnSD

Sorry, who’s the designer of Heidi’s dress? And Hilary Duff? GIRL. Yo teefs are INSANE. Srsly, girl. You’re scaring the children.

  • Chaiaiai

oh sit DOWN, duff.  when you look like a wynonna judd reboot, you cannot be taken seriously whilst you opine on fashion.

  • Snailstsichr

I gave Heidi an extra point because she didn’t look desperate. And took one away from Hilary because I hated her shoes … and I can’t even bear to think about those pants.

    • Jennifer Coleman

It is me or does Nina seem to be slightly cringing from that sequined leg and obnoxious pump barging into her personal space?

  • Rebecca Jay

Heidi’s looks like a dressy Halloween costume.  Nina and Duff just looks like bodyless heads sitting there.  Bow-ring, the whole lot.

  • ccm800

Duff looks WAY too much like Rue Mcclanahan for a girl her age. And Oompah Loompah has NEVER EVER been so orange.

  • KathKo

Hilary Duff was useless, feh !

  • Duff looks awful and tacky!  Heidi looks meh.  Nina once again wins the week!

  • libraangel

You mean it’s mommy with nanny vs. mommy with nanny vs. mommy with nanny! Hilary looks like a different kind of mother: mother of the whores!

  • I actually loved Heidi’s neckline. it was interesting and unexpected. also, I’m pretty sure it’s the most covered up she’s been all season, and I think this is my favorite look so far.

BUT, the outfit she wore to introduce the challenge: what in the holy Roman goddess bondage hell was that?
P.S. Dmitry’s “oh, I forgot. I’m a father now” line was the single funniest thing that’s happened on the show all season. that was amazing.

  • Beth G

I hate Hillary’s shoes.  Ok.  Hate is too strong a word.

    No it’s not.

  • Truly_Outrageous

Oh my gosh they couldnt get a babys wear designer as a guest judge that week. Why Hilary Duff? It just doesnt make sense to me. And on that subject whats up with the guest judges lately (particularly all the seasons on lifetime). I dont mind an actress or actor in that chair as long as she or he knows what the fuck they are talking about. They have to have a better critique than “I like it. I would wear that.” I remember when season 4 had a lot of known well known and worthy guest judges. They freakin had Alberta Feretti and Roberto Cavalli as a judges.

  • Does no one else feel that Heidi hasn’t realized that skin tight sheath dresses make her saddlebags stand out?  I know she’s probably not used to having them as she is amazingly gorgeous but 10 to 20 kids later, saddlebags happen.  Wear slightly looser clothing…
