Posted on September 07, 2012

The finale collections are in no particular order and we’ll be uploading more photos as they become available. So, keep refreshing, darlings!

  • OhSayNow

Every piece of Ven’s has a tortured rose on it, I can’t believe it…oh wait, yes I can.

    • And those pants give me nightmares about stains and bad proportions.

      • e m

the pleated pants with the rose bustier? this is the exact same look he did for the first challenge and had in his portfolio. wtf ven? the pants are not as fabulous as you might think! they look totally unflattering and really really old (as does a lot in the collection….and the hair, oh god)! he is such a one way monkey!

        • Kimbolina

Are the decoy’s absolutely required to make entirely new collections for Fashion Week?  Maybe he just pulled from his existing designs, either using actual pieces he’d already made or maybe recreating old crap.

          • e m

we’ve seen people recreating old stuff, that’s right. but I’m sure, they are not allowed to bring clothes, that they already had made. they have to show their receipts and stuff, don’t they?

          • adnama79

Plus why would you waste the opportunity to show at Fashion Week and have your very best, very freshest, seen by so many people?

          • Miranda Prince

That would mean Ven is a decoy. We can hope! 🙂

          •  I’m positive he is or someone would have stopped him from showing the white and black gowns that were basically the same dress, with some very minor variations in the folding on the bodice.

    • RroseSelavy

Fleurchons, darling. It would appear he did not make it to the final and gave up, cranking out the exact same looks he did all season.

      • e jerry powell

        • Wendi126

Anytime I think of Angela, I always feel so bad for her. She had to fly all the way to Paris to be immediately auf’ed and have to fly back alone. That would have messed with my head. Never should have got that far.

          • e jerry powell

Well, not so much immediately; she did get to stay in Parisian sequester until the next day before they flew her back home.

It would take a lot to mess with her head.  Like a reunion with The Angry Peanut.

          • Wendi126

Thanks for the link! Never saw that before. Ok, I feel better about Angela. And the Angry Peanut is still one of my fav collections and contestants even though he was a dick half the time.

          • Miranda Prince

He was a total douchebag, but every time I see his PR finale collection now, I’m like, “Dammit, I like that!”

          • Qitkat

I also enjoyed the story, even after all this time. It is always refreshing to get a peek into the real people that these contestants are. Angela came across as much more grounded and cool about the whole experience. I loved “oil and water do not get mad at each other” when referring to her differences with Jeffrey. And speaking of him, what a stunning collection he put out compared to anything the designers of this season have shown us. I would say I am disappointed, but truthfully, I didn’t have any high expectations. *Shrug* I really am beyond caring who is the winner.

    • Sobaika

He sure is predictable. I guess it’s a sign the judges never called him out on it during the show.

      • I feel like it’s more likely they did and this is his response.

        • Kristin McNamara

          SO. MANY. VAGINAS.

          • Scorpia_Mossmoon

I think one of them has a vagina between her breasts. Dude is confused, psychologically if not anatomically.

      • MilaXX

or he’s a decoy and just said “eff it”

        • Glammie

I think he’s got to be given the bitterness of all those Tweets during the real-woman challenge when he plunged from grace.

You know, the rose is lovely on the wedding gown–or what looks wedding-ish, but then he CAN’T let it go.  When I think of the heat Rami took for draping–he was nowhere as creatively limited as Ven seems to be.

And I *like* fabric roses–but there are limits.

          • Sobaika

That Rami – and Siriano and Chris March and Mondo and Seth Aaron and practically everyone – are in the same category as these trainwreck fools is funny.

          • Glammie

I blame it on last season’s Anja business–all that blatant manipulation to anoint a winner who blew it multiple times and could barely sew.  If I were in New York and serious about being a fashion designer, I wouldn’t bother.  I don’t think Jay McCarroll would have won last season.

I mean does anyone really think we’ll be wearing knock-offs of Anja’s beachwear in five years?  Or even doing the fashion-gasp about one of her creations?

          • Topaz

Yeah the wedding gown worked – it was more orchid-like, but it also worked because wedding dresses are inherently conservative. The other stuff, for some reason, made me think “tax exile”, or possibly “disgraced dictator spouse-chic”.

          • Topaz

Yeah the wedding gown worked – it was more orchid-like, but it also worked because wedding dresses are inherently conservative. The other stuff, for some reason, made me think “tax exile”, or possibly “disgraced dictator spouse-chic”.

          • Glammie

Though, it’s got a slit that’s way too high for a wedding gown, while the slit on that last white dress is juast god-awful.

You know, Ven does have talent, but I can see why he hasn’t succeeded–his metier should be wedding dresses and formalwear, but he doesn’t like women well enough to be able to work well with clients–and that’s a disaster when you’re dealing with brides.  It can’t be all about pretty fabric–you have to make it flattering. Real mismatch between talent and personality.  He needs someone to front for him.

          • BrooklynBomber

I don’t know — seems like lots of wedding gowns expose a hell of a lot of cleavage (at least that’s what I see on Say Yes to the Dress), so I don’t know why a wedding gown couldn’t have a slit.

As for the rest, I agree with you. I think he could certainly have a career designing gowns, though (wedding or otherwise) for someone else’s line, or even his own. If he gets famous enough it’ll become a “thing” to pay thousands of dollars to be insulted at fitting with Ven himself.

          • out for a walk

I worked in bridal, both the design side and the sales side, and I can tell you – they don’t want slits. Even most of the brides getting more destination-wedding-slinky-low-back dresses don’t want slits. I’m not sure why exactly, but it’s pretty rare.

          • Slits or no, it does look incredibly bridal to me. Maybe he could fill the slits up with tulle. That seems appropriately bridal.

          • BrooklynBomber

Well, that’s interesting. I defer to your expertise. But I’m always surprised by the amount of cleavage some women like to show when they’re walking down the aisle. It seems very odd to me, a real throwback, and I guess I don’t see how that’s much different than showing a lot of leg. But I realize I’m completely out of step with bridal wear.

          • Glammie

It’s odd, but when I was getting married, I thought I wanted something sort of 1930s and slinky, but when I started trying dresses on, it turned out that my dormant little girl had IDEAS and wanted a nice big skirt.  In other words, I think a lot of brides are influenced by some pretty early pretty-dress fantasies.  High slits may be a little too overtly sexy for most brides, cleavage, though, has been around in formal wear for hundreds of years.

But maybe the next round of bridal dresses will bring back sleeves and come with high slits.

          • out for a walk

I think you’re onto something with the big skirts and cleavage thing. Who doesn’t want to look like Scarlett O’Hara?

          • BrooklynBomber

You’re probably right. And you can’t go by me – I’ve had two weddings and didn’t wear anything resembling a gown at either. So all my info comes from television!

          • It’s all very David’s Bridal, though. It looks cheap, like something I’d buy for a hundred bucks or so off the rack and not even bother to tailor because it’s cheap and kind of tacky and who cares if it fits right.

I wouldn’t even want to see this at a wedding.

          • annieanne

I picture Krystal and Alexis everytime I see his stuff.

          • My sentiments exactly! Looking at Ven’s, you can certainly imagine him with a future in bridal couture, but that’s it. There’s nothing for a real woman to wear on an ordinary day…

        • Violina23

          This.  I don’t think he’s a finalist now.

          • Kimbolina

Exactly.  He probably figured without the constraints of competition but still getting to show at fashion week, might as well show the world his AMAZING technique.

      • His dresses are perfect for Lea Michelle- I can already see T&L writing “OF COURSE”

    •  And they aren’t even different looks without the roses!  So freaking boring!

    • Celandine1

       OF COURSE

    • Alan Pursell

Great, now I have Poison stuck in my head.

    • amian3

Yes, Ven’s collection is the most predictable of the bunch. Sigh.

    •  every piece of ven’s is just tortured in general. P.E.T.F (People for the Ethical Treatment of Fabrics) must be all over him. Also its a sad state of things where if Ven had branched out to I dont know a sunflower or a tulip or something I would have considered it groundbreaking and shocking

    • Ven’s collection is BO-ring!

    • Actually, there are a couple of garments without the rose – and they are the worst fitting in the collection. I wonder what that means? I’m looking at that cerise-colored satin dress and it just looks way too big. As MK would say, it’s unfortunate-looking.

      •  Maybe the only way he knows how to fit a garment is by folding one big sheet a million times until it fits, and they just happen to look floral?  I’m going to go with this as my crazy conspiracy theory of the season…

    • watchmeboogie

The way the red dress has the rose placed on the thigh… it looks like a wormhole has opened up in her leg. Have we got a new Tumor Dress?

    • kikisayshi

Pleat pleat snooze. Pleat pleat snooze. Annnddddd repeat.

    • Derek_anny

      They’re like Angela’s Fleurchons.

eta: I’m glad I’m not the first to think so.

  • I think Ven must really hate boobs.  He just HAS to cover them up with some kind of boob applique.

    •  He’s channeling Oliver. “Ugh, my woman has breasts and hips!”

    • Great name for an all-girl punk group…BOOB APPLIQUE!

  • Elaine Lang

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this….but, I think Ven might be going for some kind of flower theme?   Maybe?

    Oh.   Just me, then.

    • Stubenville

  • Cory Stottlemyer

what the HELL is happening with Sonjia’s fourth look??

    •  A lot of the photos are still in the wrong order so I’m not sure if that’s her look or Gunnar’s. I’m sure TLO will straighten it out when they get the chance 🙂

    • Stubenville

      Cats got to it.  =)

    • bluefish

Acidic lady parts — Totally unpleasant and ugly!

    • e m

i was more appaled by the last look…lace leggins? with…what is that turqoise atrocity…a skirt? a peplum? horrible…

    • QuincyTKatz

Giant Penis pointing at her face to distract from the holes in her dress

    • I like the look with the silver top and teal skirt, but I’m afraid overall I don’t like collection.

  • Uh, oh….boo boo:  that shredded leg dress was shown in the last grouping for a different designer.

Sigh…disappointed again.  Nothing gorgeous in Sonjia’s collection..don’t like that head scarf/bow at all!  And how does Ven manage to make stick-thin models look like they need to lose a few lbs?

    • Too much fabric poorly managed.

    •  You know what kills me?  I dress a lot of people who want to be bigger — the pears want to be bigger up top and the apples want to be bigger on the bottom, because it makes them proportional.  But a little optical illusion goes a long way, and this is far from a little…

  • VestigialMe

Wow, Sonjia has some great pieces and ideas, but that is one disjointed collection. The trick is to not show everything you can do at once. Make us want more.

    • RroseSelavy

A couple are drop-dead gorgeous and the rest is pretty meh. Too bad she’s so inconsistent.

      • VestigialMe

Exactly! It’s a shame, because she has so much potential.

    • Introspective

Sonjia’s collection is cray with a side of wtf. So many ideas. None of them cohesive. Taken together with the bad color choices and cheap looking fabrics? Um I hope shes a decoy. Cause if not and she thinks shes got a chance at the win, shes gonna be sorely disappointed.

  • Frank_821

Ven won’t win. too repetitive. those gowns feel bridal and expected

Sonjia’s are odd. some of the piece I like but the I can’t process. some feel bizarre.  need to see all them I think before I can pass judgement

    • Spicytomato1

I’m kind of heartbroken about Sonjia’s. Agree that the collection is oddly hard to process. That can’t be a good thing. I feel like the black lace might have been a big misstep.

    • CozyCat

Yeah, even if Venn makes the final three he has no chance of winning.  But there is a market for those clothes, so his business will probably benefit.

Sonjie needed to edit–is this a sign she didn’t get a visit from Tim?

      •  I don’t know that there’s a whole lot of market for them, actually.  They aren’t particularly flattering to most women’s bodies.

    • Topaz

I don’t think I’ve ever said “no” out loud so often in the space of one blog post. Probably just because I expected more. Those lace leggings hurt my soul. And what was with those knee curtains?

    • Lisa_Cop

Don’t like Ven ( personally) anymore but think his garments are gorgeously worked.

  • The 4th picture of Sonjia’s is also showing in Gunnar’s collection.

    • RroseSelavy

It actually makes more sense here, but it’s so hiddy I felt it could really be Gunnar’s.

      • JimMcC

Interesting. That’s my favorite piece from the finale. Whoever’s collection it’s from. I actually haven’t seen any of this season. From the looks of the finale collections, I haven’t missed much. But that look really struck me. My vote for the win goes to whichever designer can rightfully call it their own.

        • RroseSelavy

I actually like the idea behind the shredded fabric, but it is just too much shred, ill placed, or looks wrong with the rest of it, like a poor afterthought.

      • I would be shocked if it’s Gunnar considering his tribal theme collection.

  • JMansm

Ven’s looks cartoonishly bad. It’s not like with Leanne where she was working through permutations of the noodle/petal in interesting ways, this guy really doesn’t seem to have any ideas.

    • MilaXX

definite decoy. He even has the pleated pant/fuchsia top he had at episode 1.

    • Spicytomato1

Agreed. The collection looks like some tween girl rummaged through her mom’s and grandma’s old stuff and put on a pretend fashion show.

  • Sonjia has some decent pieces, but some are really not wearable. What’s with the high waist and half-shirt?

  • I soooo wish Ven had showcased that flower-folding technique of his!  This was a great opportunity for him to show the world that he can make origami roses and he blew it.  Blew it!

    • MilaXX

He blew that wad using it in too many challenges.

  • Sheila Luther

Ven is to oragami roses as Laura (PR S3) is to rosettes.  They just cant let go of their “signature” piece.

    • sisterb67

Do you mean Angela?  And her little artsy crafty Jubilee Jumbles granny circle rosette things?

      • Stubenville

Fleurchon.  Now I need brain bleach.

        • Turns out 5 years later I still break into a fit of uncontrollable giggles when I think of Angela and the Fleurchons.

          • sisterb67

YES!  I could NOT remember “fleurchon” to save my life. Of course, “Jubliee Jumbles” is permanently etched on my brain 🙂

          • Stubenville

Let me pass you some brain bleach.  =)

  • TVKimmy

Ven: OF COURSE! A lot of his collection reads old, no?

Tootie: WTH Sonjia?!?! You are SO much better then this.

  • Ven. Of course.

Sonjia – I just can’t even. My head already hurts and she’s not helping.

  • NDC_IPCentral

Sonjia’s – disjointed.  Ven – repetitive and quite expected.  His looks like a bridal store’s offerings.

    • Spicytomato1

      A secondhand bridal store.

    • ampg

I sort of love that Ven did a bridalwear collection.  It comes off as a big middle finger to the judges.

  • Just like what happens with Lea Michele when she steps a red carpet, I saw Ven’s collection and all I could think is: OF COURSE

  • Burkyquirky

Sonjia’s dress, third from the top (if I counted right) looks like something flotus would wear — wonder if she will?

    • alyce1213

At this point in time, it’s more Sasha than FLOTUS. (Sasha wore a similar silhouette at the DNC). It may be a little “young” and too flouncey for the Mom-in-Chief.

      • Spicytomato1

Maybe that’s what’s nagging at me about her stuff. The sophistication level just isn’t there.

  • I want Sonjia’s third look very badly.

  • Ben

What I find most striking about Ven’s collection are how dull his looks are when he isn’t using some form of his rose/mutilated boobs motif. He really has nothing to offer in terms of design.
    Sonjia’s collection, what a disappointment.

  • lessax3

I’m disappointed with Sonjia’s so far and Ven’s is exactly what he’s been doing all season. I can’t believe Elena’s is my favorite so far. I just really can’t wrap my head around that since I haven’t liked anything she did on the show.

    • In_Stitches

Proof that the extremely limiting 1 day challenges don’t give us an accurate representation of a designers skill set?  I think so…

  • Sheila Luther

Gosh I hope PR has a couture/avant garde challenge.  Ven would explode!

  • EverybodysStarling

Ven’s first three dresses are exactly the same.

  • Stubenville

Well, that was interesting… not. Could Insane in the Ukraine be the season winner? Her collection was the most polished and modern looking to my eye.

    • MilaXX

She’s looking like the winner to me.

      • Glammie

I don’t think she made it to the finale because I think she would have gotten a serious warning regarding her styling if she had.

        • Stubenville

Yet I find the lip color hideous, which most likely means Nina will declare it to be “editorial.”  =)

        • MilaXX

Mondo was in the finale and also got a serious warning regarding his styling.

          • Glammie

Yeah and disregarding Nina on the styling is one of the things that cost Mondo his win.  I’d think most contestants would keep that in mind.  Though with Elena, you never know.

I really am stumped as to who the Final Three are–and not in a good way.  Last season, even, I had two favorite final collections–Laura’s and Bert’s both would have been fine for the win for me–though neither was in the final three.  This group though . . . well, it may be much more apparent when you see the clothes move.  Both Leanne’s and Korto’s came to life in motion.

          • MilaXX

I liked Korto’s and was on the fence about Leanne’s until I saw it in motion. I am especially interested in seeing Fabio’s in motion.
I felt the same way about Bert’s collection as I do Christopher’s it’s nice but doesn’t feel like a winner to me. I didn’t car for Laura’s at all. I’d lump her in with Ven on an excitement level.
Dmitry reminds me of Michael Knight. He did nice work all season and then made a hoochie finale collection.

          • Glammie

Yeah, stills did not do justice to Leanne’s clothes–I’ve always felt bad for Korto because there are so many seasons where she would have been a worthy winner, but Leanne was on fire that collection (though where has she been since?) Jillian Lewis is another who ended up in the wrong season.

And, man, Dimitry’s was kind of shocking–he’s been so tasteful and then trashy.  Similar feeling about Sanjia.  I really didn’t expect those taste level problems.

Well, I hope one of these collections comes to life.

          • MilaXX

Dmitry reminds me of Michael Knight. Remember that hoochie finale collection he designed? Oy!
Completely agree about Korto’s collection and while it was not my taste Jillian’s.

        •  Not necessarily — maybe the judges didn’t see them in advance this year?  Granted, they have the last several years, but they haven’t always.

  •  Sucking Gunshot Wound, Left Thigh.

  • bhl_1123

Is Ven designing to win Project Runway or land a job at David’s Bridal?

  • ChiliP

Ok, shoot me- I think Ven’s first 3 dresses are beautiful. Yes, the are all the same silhouette, and yes, the overuse of the rose motif is laughable. Oh, and yes, Ven’s a dick. All these things combined make me quite positive that he is not going to win, which is as it should be. But damn if I don’t want to renew my vows just to wear that white gown.  I will now turn in my BK credentials…

    • Frank_821

They ARE pretty and they are well made. No one should shoot you for that. But you’re not the first person here who said they have a bridal feel. I can plenty of women would use it for that purpose.

But from a fashion design veiwpoint of course they show Ven’s weaknesses and limitations. This collection to me shows despite all his prizes from school, he’s a second rate Rami-only much less versatile. He’s just a nice dressmaker with a couple gimmicks.

      • ChiliP

The disdain for Ven is high, so I feel like any sort of positive comment regarding his work should come with an asterisk. Hence, the somewhat defensive start to my post.

But  you’re absolutely right- his collection is expected, with hardly anything to offer in terms of silhouette or design. I’m pretty sure this is a decoy collection, so he probably feels like he can get away with the repetition.  If not, and he is actually a finalist, then I’m a bit shocked he thought he could win with this. It all seems very “Beverly Hills wedding trousseau.”

        • Lisa_Cop

Agree that Ven is probably a decoy collection because we’ve several of these looks already (white pallazo pants, pink sleeveless dress, etc).

      • Violina23

Exactly. I happen to like the rose technique, but not on EVERY SINGLE DRESS. And any woman above size, say, 6 or so (who, despite Ven’s attitude, DO EXIST for reasons other than to tortue him) won’t be able to pull off those full & stiff tops.

    • SewingSiren

I agree that the dress are very pretty. The rose bodice that he brought to the audition and showed at Time Square is the prettiest most real life rose like drape that I have ever seen.
I think the collection looks bridal, but not David’s Bridal. It looks like very high end to me. There is nothing wrong with bridal or being very focused in your work. Vera Wang, or the grandmother of the commercial bridal industry Pricilla of Boston, for instance. He should have gone all out and shown some with bridal headwear.

      •  Absolutely.  The problem is that Ven had some serious issues with working with a client — not just designing for her body, but handling her personally.  It’s hard to build a good bridal business if you can’t deal well with women at their most stressful time.

  • tbk2

Ven, probably not the best time for your “Kissd by a Rose” theme.

  • Ven: Yawn. Just fucking yawn.

  • alyce1213

Ven’s dresses are predictable and very pageant (upscale pageant, but pageant nonetheless).  But he makes very nice pants.

  • Kathy Schrenk

    one-way monkey

  • CarolinLA

I think they’re both out of the running.  Him because he cannot let go of those fucking roses and her because the collection is not good.

  • MilaXX

I like half of Sonjia’s and the other half looks tacky to me.
Ven looks like a decoy to me. The gowns look like David bridal specials and the rest looks like stuff we have already seen before either on the show or in his audition. There literally looks like nothing new to me.

So far I can’t think of who I’d pick for the finalist, but if Elena is one she’s the clear winner. Stank personality or not.

  • Roosevelt 85

    Both disappointing.

Ven…stop it with the cheap Valentino knock-off

  • StelledelMare

Incredibly disappointed with Sonjia’s. Incredibly bored as always by Ven’s

  • TOO MANY FUCKING FLOWERS. Jack jiminy christ. I’m hoping this is his “fuck you judges I’ll make as many flowers as I want” collection for being auf’d for being so damn boring.

  • bluefish

The calla lilies are in bloom!

Both of them trying way way too hard.

  • Sally3000

When Ven does the tight inset rose thing, as he did here in the red skirt, my first impression is always gunshot wound. I have to look at it a while before I see a rose.

  • Sarah Thomas

So I don’t watch this show, but based on the designs alone, it’s going to come down to Ven and Christoper. They’re in a class by themselves.

  • tonibaloney

Ven’s is so boring I could scream!

  • SewingSiren

Sonjia has some beautiful pieces and some that make me weep. I love her signature skirt , the turquoise with the lace top, that is my favorite. And the shorts with peplum top with little jacket. And the lace dress with shredded knees, that is a fresh look for her.
I wish she had done more headwear, because she has a talent for that too. The black lace bodysuit with vaJayjay flap makes me want to jump out a window.

My favorite from Ven is the beaded white pants with black chiffon blouse. I also like the white satin evening sheath dress. The three gowns are too similar to each other.

    • That turquoise skirt is gorgeous. Anything with a vagina flap warrants an automatic leap from a 20 story window. Not good at all. It was so all over the place. She’s another designer I really wanted to be able to root for but I’m kind of underwhelmed with all the collections. Maybe that will change a little with T-Lo’s assessments 🙂

      • CarolinLA

Sometimes a fish whistle needs a little airing out.

  • Ven is boring. Sonji has some nice pieces but nothing goes together and it doesn’t look like a collection. Interesting considering that’s how I felt about the two pieces her group made last night.

  • VicksieDo

The only thing I like from Ven is the sparkly white shiny pants. Other than that, it’s ill fitting and redundant.

  • VicksieDo

Some of Sonjiya’s are really pretty, but so not cohesive.  It’s distracting from the pieces themselves.

  • MoHub

I’m devastated! I’ve been on Team Sonjia all the way. How could she disappoint me like this?

  • I’m betting Sonjia is in the “real” finale. Maybe Ven, too.

  • Jasmaree

Sonjia is very disappointing. And Ven is soooooooooooooo boring.

  • Carla_Charlton

After looking at all the postings, I’m surprised to say that the collections I like the most are from the designers that I had the lowest expectations — Gunnar, Elena, Christopher, and Fabio.

  • altalinda

Wow, Ven’s collection is such a bore.

  • Um, so Sonjia’s is weird right? Like, it’s like three different collections!

  • john v

ven’s looks look bridal to me

  • PastryGoddess

Ven will be getting the call from David’s Bridal any day now

  • Celandine1

OH Sanjia I weep … lace leggings and a see through lace granny panty dress, you are killing me.

  • marilyn

Roses aside, Ven needs to get into the beauty pageant circuit.  His dresses are fine for that, but there is no imagination in his collection.  It seems to be well made.  It is just not innovative.

Sonji did not stay true to her talent-outerwear and sportswear.  The funky headgear on the first model started it out badly.  I found the collection to be scattered.  It is not particularly innovative, because she is borrowing on current trends for this collection:  Black lace, granny panties with sheer overlay skirts.  Nothing new.  She has no cohesive theme or woman in mind.  Too bad.

  • Judy_S

I like Sonjia’s. Maybe I’m the only one? I like the colors and variety… hmm. Ven’s seems like it came in on a time machine.

  • Pupioso

Wow. Ven’s all look the same. What shock. NOT. Sonjia’s I am so very disappointed in. Really a shame. She is my favorite designer going into the final stretch. I really don’t like her collection. Maybe it will grow on my, but I dont’ think so. Hers is all over the place and I don’t get any sense of how these pieces go together. Big disappointment.

    • I liked her too, but do not like the collection. Ven’s (for the most part) is okay, looks very bridal. I wonder if that is his market?

  • snarkykitten

Two words come to mind with Ven’s: of. course.

Ahhhh…my eyes….so…much…shiny!  Yuck, yuck, yuck!  Ven is definitely a one way monkey!

    • Lisa_Cop

Except for one black top, everything Ven showed is in silk/satin. Really, iis that the ONLY fabric he can use? And the origami and roses. Despite the good execution, I am dying of boredom with his collection. And Sonjia’s doesn’t have any cohesion. A major disappointment.

      •  This.  Everything uses the same technique, the same fabric, and is for the same type of event.  If you want to do your floral thing, fine.  Show me how you’ll do it in a comfy cotton with jeans, show me how it will work for a day at the office, show me how I can swim in it.  If you’re going to have a distinctive technique like that, you have to be able to adapt it to more than one type of garment.

  • PinkLemon

I’ve seen all of this before?!?! snoozer.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

I love that T Lo put these two together in one post. Like a study in contrasts!

There will be no dinging Ven for execution (though the second to last dress looks a bit small for the model, no? I am suspecting one of those last-minute model-changes), but because he played it extremely safe by deploying the same exact tricks we have seen over and over again. Very monotone. And again, it all adds volume to exactly the places women do not want it, as T Lo mentioned about his first competition entry. No evidence here that he can produce anything new or fresh later on.

Sonjia, on the other hand, took many risks, and I actually like for the most part what I see here. Boy was I wrong about her when she started out. She has unique (and risky) ideas about fashion, which pay off when she can execute them well enough. Fourth from last look looks pretty sloppy, though, to my eyes, in that picture, anyway. The fourth from first, however, is pretty interesting. The second from last is like something from Olivier’s collection, but much better executed.

  • Kate4queen

Ven is tortured Rami-light. Not impressed.
I love some of Sonjia’s though, particularly that dress three down

  • poketom

I so wish that they had to create collections for fall. I feel like every time the finale is a spring/summer collection the results are so lackluster, repetitive, and cheap looking.

  • Question: if I remember correctly, the ‘real’ finalists get something like $10K to complete their collections. Do the ‘fake’ finalists get anything? (I would hope that PR would at least throw a few thousand their way, if they expect them to show at Bryant Park.)

Because I’m trying to figure out why all these collections look so damn cheap.

    • Lilithcat

In most of the past seasons, the decoys got the same amount as the finalists.

  • gregory tapper

Really Ven? Really. Ugh. I don’t know why i’m surprised. His clothes look like they are barbie fashions. Ive seen those gowns on the barbie dolls in my mother’s house.

  • sockandaphone

lol ven. he is so predictable it makes me cry.

i really like sonjia’s. its pretty girly but with an edge.

    • MilaXX

I cant forgive Sonjia for that grey lace thing with the shredded legs.

  • notdorothygale

No one will ever top Jay or Christian as far as I’m concerned. This is just…stuff.

  • I know it’s totally icky to say, but I once had a warty thing on the bottom of my foot at the base of my big toe that looked EXACTLY LIKE one of Ven’s flat angular rose spiral orifice features. It was awful. One day, after weeks of pain and putting various medications on it and hoping it would just go away, the whole patch of skin peeled off as if it had never happened. I’m sort of hoping that’s an analogy for next week’s judging.

    • Qitkat

In the middle of the night, after trying to slog my way through all the comments on the collections, yours made me giggle right out loud. Truly, a fitting end for the day. I wait with bated breath to see how TLo will skewer these looks. The only thing that will have made this season worth watching.

      •  See, I’m hoping for the exact opposite — I don’t want TLo to skewer these looks.  They are so obviously problematic that they could just write “Of course” for the Venology and collection post and say everything that needs saying.

  • VRuss

Even though Ven did the same old, same old rose, his doesn’t look that bad… Don’t know what to say about Sonyias… It is not bad, but I don’t like it at all.

  • peacockprincess

Based on all the collections it looks like Ven, Fabio, Melissa and Demitry are definitely out.

  • Joshua

While I do like Ven’s gowns, I think it speaks to how generic they feel (or how overused his petal technique has become) that went I got to the end, I wondered why he didn’t have a full collection. It’s not that I don’t know how to count …

  • Citric

Ven: Beating a dead one-trick pony.

    • Pennymac

Or a dead One Way Monkey.

  • tallgirl1204

Wow.  Sonja.  LLOVE the third dress.  The high-waisted floppy pants, not so much.

  • msdamselfly

Looks like Ven is a decoy

  • Pennymac

I really like Sonjia’s. Which means she won’t win. They NEVER pick the ones I like! I’m too pedestrian, I suppose, but I really like the edgy yet girly effect that I got from Sonjias.

  • Really, Ven? REALLY?

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

    ven went full joan collins.

  • ZnSD

ugh, oh Ven. Your bridal shop awaits. As for the rest of them: this is
by far the worst runway show in PR history. Some truly dreadful clothes,
dreadful styling, horrid color palettes, derivative designs, offensive
ethnic appropriation (OMG), and just plain boring and sad clothes. I
predict Chris will win. I’m not even sure if Ven makes top 3 at this
point, and seeing his complete lack of range in this collection is
beyond disappointing. Melissa needs to contact April and get a company
together. They’d make a killing. Someone please just remove Gunnar from
the fashion industry and put him out of his misery. That voice combined
with that ego and complete lack of fashion directive is beyond
    inappropriate, it’s plain ghastly.

    • Presumptuous Insect

  • Oh look, a rose detail! And another! and anoth..zzzzzz

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

my prediction for top 3:  melissa, dmitry, christopher.  i think christopher will win.  my favorite is elena, which almost always means “decoy” — that is a really fun collection.  i’m most disappoint with fabio.  gunnar’s looks like he decided to go out with a ‘fuck you’.

  • “Hello, my name is Ven, and I’m a tortured-fabric-oholic.”

  • ThaliaMenninger

Sonjia has lost her mind. Lace leggings? Really?

Ven needs to work for David’s Bridal.

  • GenieinTX

I don’t know guys, Ven might be a finalist because that hot pink dress is way too plain and doesn’t really fit in.  It smells of Last Minute Challenge Addition to me, unless the huge fabric rose is in the back.

    • Lisa_Cop

If I recall correctly, Ven made that hot pink dress for the Times Square challenge. I’m almost certain we’ve seen it already. That smacks of “decoy”.

      • Clacey

I went back and looked at the Week One photos. The pink dress Ven made was different – it had a boat neck and a a fabrigami skirt.

  • guest2visits

O Sanjia; me sad.  I’m thrilled with your peacock blue skirt outfit, (which I would have been happy to see on at least half of
    your models) and the petite grey jacket you created, but not much else.  I think the word is wonky. The tulip skirt while editorial;
was also kind of neat.  You have a way with this look;  ‘par excellence’.
Ven’s was also disappointing, mostly because it was all the same, shiny fabric. I like his folding/draping technique; but this looked
to me like a bridal collection; and not the sophistication I thought he was capable of. I do love the embellished pants.
What could he have done with some tweeds, or wools or even taffeta, anything.

  • Ven should design for David’s Bridal.

  • What kind of crack is Sonjia smoking when she made her “updated Blossom” mess?

Also, Ven should tuck his junk and see if he likes a skirt to end JUST below his bits? Real ladies (who he seems to believe his clientele is) do not need to air their ladybits in such an obvious manner.

  • Presumptuous Insect

I so hate that thing that Sonjia made with the stringiness around the knees. Whoa.

Venn diagram, what a bore, a total bore!  That rose thing looks like a tumor or something.

  • SapphoPoet

Oh, I was really hoping for more from Sonjia. She has some good ideas here, but it’s kind of all over the place.

    Ven–of course.

  • jmorino08

    I am so confused by Sonjia’s collection… I have a fashion headache.

And Ven is channeling some serious David’s Bridal mojo… Ugh!

  • Sonjia, what a hot mess. Ven, zzZZzzZZZzzz, I don’t know how many times I’ve seen those roses. Enough already!

  • Susan Crawford

Sonjia’s collection wasn’t as cohesive as I thought it would be. And one or two pieces were positively cracktastic – what is WITH that thigh to ankle shredding effect??

Ven did . . . what Ven does. And he did it very well. I can certainly see the wearability and saleability of almost every piece he sent out on the runway. And I have seen them. Many times in the past few years. To quote my darling Gertrude Stein: “There is no THERE there.”

I have absolutely NO idea whose were the real finale collections, and sadly, I am pretty much let down by ALL of them. There were some really nice pieces, some very average pieces and a few truly terrible pieces, but identifying a single stand-out collection is not possible for me.

  • Samuel Donovan

Looking at all of these collection, it’s interesting–keeping in mind that eventually, they’ll need to design for Lord and Taylor if they win–which stores they actually look like they belong in.

    Sonjia, I’m seeing Free People.
Ven is a mixture of “David’s Bridal” and “Jessica McClintock”. So much for that taste level, mister shiny white satin.

  • Ven = David’s Bridal.

    • YoungSally

      He’s thinking bigger

      Budhu Bridal.

      • Ven doesn’t do bigger, remember?  Besides, all his pieces already made his models look bigger than they are.  Buddha Bridal.

  • Oh, Ven, and his roses. Geez.

Anywho, based on this group –

No one FTW. Both designers have some good pieces in their collection but it didn’t pique my interest. If I did have to pick, I will choose Ven only because his dresses are more ready-to-wear and I can see a lot of ladies (size 0-4…*chuckles*) wearing his dresses.  I wanted more from Tootie. But besides the dress with the blue lace trim, I was not impressed with her collection.

  • Emily Myers

Ven’s collection looks like it should be in a bridal shop – all different variations of Bridesmaid dresses in my opinion.  Even the pants.  For the adventuresome bride!

  • I was very disappointed with these two collections until I got a look at the others; and then they started to improve by comparison.   Sonjia’s and Ven’s strike me as the strongest collections after Elena’s.   I hope they turn out to be the final three, but I doubt that will happen.

Sonjia’s is the most disjointed of these three and there are a few pieces which I dislike very much (the lace top paired with the skirt with the big tulips is the worst,) but there are a few exceptional pieces (the dress made from the mosaic poppy patterned material, and the long pale grey sheath gown with the black jacket,) and the overall color scheme is very strong.

Ven over-uses his rose technique of course, but he does something different with it every time, and every piece is well thought out and flattering to the women he chose to wear them.  His collection is conservative, but it isn’t ugly (like so many of the other collections this season and last,) it’s genuinely elegant and even beautiful, and it doesn’t look like the work of anyone else; and it’s no more repetitive than Leanne Marshall’s collection which won back on season five; oh yes, and it’s extremely well made (I especially like the red rose top with the billowing pleated white pants, the black evening gown, and the beaded white pants paired with the shear and solid black top.)

Still, Elena’s collection is far better than either of these.

    •  Ven has no shot at all.  Remember Laura from S3?  She didn’t win precisely because she only showed an evening wear style.  Leanne used the same technique everywhere, but she showed range in the types of garments — she had bridal, she had evening, she had casual (or what is casual to buyers and editors).  Ven is only showing one technique, on only one fabric, and on only one type of garment.  Even the pants look is an evening suit.

  • ashley d

Elena definitely has a leg up on everyone– hers is the only interesting one. Ven is, indeed, a “one way monkey” and Sonjia, while better then the rest in my eye, is still not as cohesive as Elena’s.

  • AnnPopovic

Ven has a happy career waiting for him on the Jersey Shore.

  • siriuslover

Did Ven just show one gown in three different colors? It looked like a factory showroom. And one of those pieces I swear was the piece he auditioned with. Tortured, boring, inflexible. Some of Sonjia’s look nice, other spotty.  In fact, that’s my sense of all the designers’ collections: hit or miss.

    • Lisa_Cop

I’m pretty sure Ven brought the red gown and the white palazzo pants to his audition.

  • Sonjia: WTF.
Ven: Prom, prom, junior prom, hooker prom.

  • hoez

TOO MANY ROSES. Agh…. and Sonjia’s collection reminds me of Carol-Hannah’s.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Who the hell is “the girl” for Sonjia’s collection? That teal and navy thing with the black lace is a proportions DISASTUH.

    Ven. Yawn. Marchesa. Napkin origami.

  • Sonjia seems to think that women like their hips to look bigger! Well, maybe if you’re 12. The head scarf turban just ages the wearer, (Joan Crawford anyone?)  I liked the 4th one until I saw the ripped knees — I just want to cut the bottom part off and let the middle hang like fringe.  Nice jacket though.  The silver and turquoise dress is lovely,as is the black top/white vest/silver pants combo.  I like the khaki trousers too, and the silver jacket in the next picture, but those peplums have to go! Looks like she’s taken a page from Elena with those ribbed brown leather hot pants (well made, but I don’t like ’em), the cream and leather jacket is nice though. The last one is just wrong.

    And Ven…ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    •  Um, there are actually a lot of apple-shaped women who want their hips to look a bit wider to give them a more hourglass look.

  • Ahhhhh… now I know what my wardrobe has been missing.

    Macrame knee cutouts.

  • Vic

These two offered the worst collections. Let’s hope they didn’t make it to the finale. What a waste that would be.

  • Ven – welcome to David’s Bridal!

Sanjia – honey, what the hell happened, girl?  I love this chick, but this collection is cray-cray!

  • redgauntlet

Ven’s are well-made and kind of old fashioned. Not really original or modern to me.

  • ASK26

I think some people are being a bit unfair to Ven  (and I am in no way excusing what appeared to be crappy comments in that makeover challenge)     WRT being a .. what was it one way monkey?         I keep thinking of Lee Anne (sp?) with all of the petals.    (Rami’s draping, (and  I could not stand Mondo’s super high waists)  and Uli’s beach wear, and as much as I liked her work, Laura’s deep v-neck dresses, etc. )

Of course Anya’s stuff did get called out.

    • Jasmaree

Part of the reason those were acceptable and this isn’t (at least for me) is that, though Leanne and Rami may have had some of the same elements, they used them differently each time. In Ven’s collection, seven out of ten looks involved this technique and six out of those seven were in the exact same place. Some of those gowns look almost exactly the same (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th) with very minute changes. On top of that, the 5th look is the exact look from the first episode, and the second look is very similar to something in his audition portfolio.

The problem is that Ven’s technique isn’t something you can really use in a number of new and exciting ways. There are several ways to reinvent and reimagine draping or petals or deep v-necked dresses. But giant fabric flowers? Only so much you can do with that. Looks like Ven has found exactly two ways he can use it, and has deployed the first method 6 times here.

      • Qitkat

Exactly. And not only what you said, Leanne did not repeat anything she did in any challenges. She had many fresh takes on her petals.

        • hoez

I loved seeing her fresh noodles. :]

    • Lisa_Cop

ALL of these collections, no matter how repetitive or lacking in cohesion, beat out Anya’s caftans.

    • Leanne’s noodles, Rami’s draping, and Uli’s prints all can be applied repetitively and each time in a different way. Ven’s rose can only be done by one way. The only variation he can do with it is to either put it on the top or bottom. Dimitry misspoke but he was actually right on the spot when he said Ven was a “one way monkey”. I think it suits Ven better than “one trick pony”.

      •  No there are other ways — he just didn’t explore them.  Imagine a t-shirt with a small scale of this.  Think of a fun cotton summer dress with those structural elements to contrast with the ease of the dress.

  • in a season 10 marathon ven’s rose detail would be perfect for a drinking game!!!

  • Linderella

I’m shocked at how much I dislike Sonjia’s collection.  (3rd and 5th looks notwithstanding, but even then I find them “pretty” but unexceptional.)  I really expected her to bring it, but I think it’s just bad.

  • Wendi126

Having looked at all the final collections, I clearly see Elena as the winner. I don’t think her collection is in the same league as Jay McCarroll but of this season? Yes, Elena.

  • wow I liked Sonjia’s MUCH more than I thought I would. I pegged her as a juniors designer for mall clothing at the beginning. I loved her personal style though and she seems to have based her collection on herself. Her mistake was throwing everything out there though. Some judicious editing, okay a lot of editing starting with more consistency with the fabric and she’d have nailed it.

Ven, still one of my faves. He’s the opposite of Sonjia; he’s too consistent. But he was smart to limit himself to evening wear. I hate white satin but that’s just me.

  • Wowie I did not expect Ven’s to be that awful. It’s like the bridesmaid clearance rack at David’s Bridal.
Sonjia is not perfect but, along with Elena, one of the more interesting ones so far. Those brown leather shorts are to die for!

  • I can’t stand the fabric Ven uses!! I hate that super shiny fabric… it automatically makes things look cheat and like freshman year of homecoming to me… But I LOOOVE Sonjia’s stuff! Which surprises me, because I haven’t liked much this whole season.

  • MzzPants

Sonjia:  not feeling it.  Maybe I’m missing something.

Ven:  Of course.  He needs to go straight to the bridal market.

  • ChristinaRi

I can’t even talk about Ven’s collection because although it wasn’t exactly what I expected, it was all about the gown and nothing really new.

Sonjia is the one I want to discuss.  I’m really disappointed in her designs.  Am I all wrong?   I wanted to like her designs.

    1. The see through lace bottom — that look is done, done, and done.  Plus the cut out top looks passé as well.
    2. The upside down skirt with the fullness around the top.   The print is pretty, but others have tried to make the upside down look work and failed.
    3. Cute little dress in a nice print.  Nothing exciting.
    4.  A shredded jumpsuit for a formal occasion?   I’m confused.  I like the jacket, but it’s kind of casual looking.
    5. Turquoise satin(?) skirt with gray top.   This may be a dress.    But it’s kind of 80 redux.
    6. Nice pants.  I can’t really see the detail on the top.  Not sure about that vest.   It’s not a bad look, but not great.
    7. I hate this.   The pants make the model look wide and the top is no bueno.
    8. I don’t understand the rather formal jacket with the shorts and fluffy top.  Also the back on this jacket is apparently either dark red or brown which is odd.  I get that from the shots of the looks walking away.
    9. I like the jacket ok.  The lapel shifted while the model was walking and I think that’s because of the leather making the lapel heavy and a bit awkward.   Just not feeling the shorts, but I’d like to hear what others think.
    10. No, no, and no.  Lace leggings and turquoise.  dont’ get it.

It almost seemed like two different collections.

    • Qitkat

Good point on calling Sonjia out over how incohesive this is. And this has been a consistant inconsistency over the past few years of finale collections. It seems that many PR designers just don’t get it. They need to be schooled on what makes a collection a true collection, and not just a bunch of clothes that you threw everything at from your creative mind.

There is a show I recently watched online called Masterchef Australia. It’s a very long season and there are a lot of shows, but they have one idea that PR could make use of. After every 5 episodes they hold a master class, in which no one is eliminated, and they are taught new, challenging skills by professional chefs. PR could adapt this technique, and spend a couple of hours every other episode schooling the contestants on cohesiveness in collections, even zipper instruction, things like that. Somehow, from the design pool the producers are now drawing from, more and more folks are showing up who are lacking some very rudimentary knowledge and skills. And we the audience are becoming more and more cynical and disappointed.

      • l_c_ann

We (the audience ) HAVE been paying attention to the previous nine seasons.  Many of us have the skill sets already.

“And we the audience are becoming more and more cynical and disappointed.”_ Qitkat _________________________for the very succinct (well edited) win

  • Lord in heaven – Ven does the same thing over and over and……  SO boring.  As for Sonjia……what the hell happened?  How’d she get from last episodes fabulous jacket to whatever that skirt thing is in the second pic?  ??????  Frankly I don’t know what to say about any of the collections.  There are individual looks I like but then…..

Maybe I need to think about them and come back later (MUCH later).  Jeeze.  When I think of Mia or Laura or Mondo.  I dunno, maybe it’s me – but none of this seasons designers really strikes my fancy.  Be interesting to see who wins.

  • Ven characterizes his aesthetic as “romantic”. The rose/rosette is indeed a metonymy for “romantic”. It is also a (classically) cliche item, a literal-minded representation of “romantic”. I appreciate his technical prowess. I also question his scope. His aesthetic, as evinced in this collection, is quite parochial: most of these pieces are replicas of looks he has created during the show and looks he presented in his casting and portofolio. Expand your work, Ven. You have the skill-set.

    • alula_auburn

Flashbacks to reading La Roman de la Rose. . .

  • Qitkat

Mumbling accelerates. Begins quoting from Dante as she falls farther and farther into a swirly black hole. Straight into the PRinferno. Far off Heidi is heard laughing and cackling and chortling and howling at the moon…

    Too far?

  • CarolinLA

If Ven could’ve had all models NAMED Rose, he would have.

    • Stubenville

Like Rose from Keeping Up Appearances?  =)

  • MilaXX

The more I look at them, especially close up on Zimbio, the more I like Sonjia and Fabio’s collections. I think seeing them in motion will help considerably. Ven’s on the other hand just reads old and dated. Nothing new, nothing fresh and more importantly unless they are getting married, nothing to attract the 20 something audience that NYFW caters to. The fact that he repeated, rather than expand on that rose design does not bode well.

  • Ven Budhu for David’s Bridal. That’s what the entire collection reminds me of. Or maybe “Say Yes to the Dress”-just like every single Pnina looks the same, so do all of his dresses.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

WHOA! Both of these collections are, ummm…. really, uuuhhh…. horrible. Too harsh? Ven’s a Herrera knock-off from 5 years ago and so matronly! Sonjia’s could be interesting but it skews too much towards “crafty” and really lacks cohesion. It was sort of all over the place. And Ven’s was pretty much the same look x 10.

  • Clacey

Well, it’s no wonder that Ven only likes designing for super-thin models – that fabrigami gimmick adds volume and only a tall, skinny woman can carry it off.

    • alula_auburn

I remember thinking on the very first episode, that the rose-blouse and the huge, voluminous white suit was way too much fabric, even on a model.

      • Clacey

I thought so, too, but here he either found a girl who weighs 80 lbs or he toned down the outfit a bit. Looking more closely at the other pieces in the collection, however, I see that most of them make these models look bigger.

  • What, no comments about Sonjia/Tootie? (lets face it, Ven(n) sucked. But I think she sent down some pretty pieces (tho why do all the models have the same hair (wig?)  Look 3 is adorable! and very wearable all of it. I could see it being sellable.

  • BobStPaul

For me, Sonjia’s collection is the most disappointing (followed closely by Dmitry) because it does not reflect the talent or creativity she has shown on the show thus far.  I like two of her outfits but that’s about it.  Based on all the collections, I think Elena’s was probably the best even though she displays some of the worst personality traits in PR history.  I would probably put Melissa and Fabio next even though they both had problems.  I actually liked Fabio’s as much as I liked Elena’s but I couldn’t see it appealing to a very broad spectrum of customers.  Overall, I found the collections this year to be less than overwhelming.

  • Vic

Terrible, awful, horrible, yet the edits lead to Ven’s staying in the running for the long haul. I am not sure about Sonjia, and these fashions support that she might have been aufed. Terrible choice of fabrics and styling.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Sonja – tortured shapapes and several of the bitter kitten’s most hated elements: lace!, lace over panties!, peplums, lace under peplums with lace belly strip.  Kill me!!
Ven – the white fabric he used is so horrid

  • Bozhi

I do not like spring collections.  I think Sonjia would have done better with a fall collection.

I think Ven would have sent the same dresses down the runway no matter what the season.

  • watchmeboogie

What in the world was happening with Sonjia? Such a mishmash of unflattering, bunchy-hipped looks that widen the body. The one interesting thing she did was those couple of pieces that created chess-piece silhouettes on the torso. It would have been nice to see her take that theme through the collection.

  • Scarlet39

I’m not spoilered, but looking at the collections of the designers who, in my opinion, are the best this season, I’m getting a bad feeling about the Final 3.  Some of these really look phoned in.

    • CarolinLA

Let’s hope so because if Sonjia’s is intentional, I wouldn’t know what to say.  I don’t remember a collection ever being this disjointed.  But she has been really hit or miss throughout the season.

  • Meelah

Sonjia I love her but those do not look like top 3 contestant items on the runway.  Ven sent out items that I remember him showing during his audition.  White pants and red top?  He showed that to Mondo and the other audition judges before the show started.  Vens long dresses are just basically the same dress with subtle changes on each.  Fine if you’re Elie Saab and sending 30 dresses down the runway but stupid if you’re on a design contest show and only sending 10 looks.

  • Ven: Of course.

Sonjia…I need to process her collection more. She plays with shapes, materials, and colors, which I can appreciate, but her collection could use more cohesion and editing…like the skirt in the 2nd photo is odd and unflattering.

Overall, a disappointing finale. Maybe things will look different in motion.

  • dschubba

If Ven set out to make a repetitive Lhuillier knock-off, which I assume he did, homeboy deserves a round of applause.

I love you, Sonjia, but, yikes.

  • Sweetvegan

Wow – I really thought that I would love Sonjia’s and Ven’s collections, but Sonjia’s is full of weird pieces that just don’t look good (so different from what she’s done in the challenges that have aired so far), and Ven’s collection is so one-note. Dimitry’s and Fabio’s collections are disappointing, too, compared to what I’ve seen so far. I might change my mind after we get closer looks and see the video footage, but so far, I like Christopher’s and Melissa’s collections the best.

  • BelleBook

    And finally:

I liked Sonjia’s outfits overall.  That said, I’m not fond of the styling and the ninth piece that I saw looks bad.  But overall, I really liked it!

Ven’s doing what he always does.  He’s too one-note.  On the plus side, his outfits look gorgeous!

I think Sonjia’s got the edge here but Ven’s outfits are pretty if too one-note.

  • jjfg

I keep thinking these two are supposed to be the best of the group, so far, and I almost nodded off, scrolling down.  Ven’s in particular looks like a rehash of everything he’s put out so far, and Sonjia lost me at grannie-panties-and-lace.  *yawn

    • CarolinLA

Remember how enthused we were about them early in the season?  What happened?

  • CarolinLA

Boy, the bloom is off Ven’s rose.

    • Hah!  Good one!

    • alula_auburn

I lol’ed at the red suit/dress with the rose in the skirt.  I have a feeling that was not the hoped-for response!

  • DinahR

I’m going to be so alone in this, lol, but I actually like Ven’s stuff here.   Agreed it looks bridal but when I just accept these are gowns and dressy pieces and nothing my lifestyle requires (unfortunately) I like them a lot.  There is something a bit retro I find appealing and I actually like his flower motif.   Because of the lack of variety in ‘wearable’ pieces I think Ven wasn’t in the finale and he just did what he wanted and loved for his collection.

I like Sonjia’s personality and there are a few of her pieces here that I really enjoy.  Lots of variety there and salable separates.  I think she’s in the finale…

  • CarolinLA

I think I’m most disappointed that most of the collections show so little growth.  I credit Christopher for at least not relying on his shredding technique and at least Gunnar showed something completely different from his work on the show and from his portfolio.  Ven did not change one iota from day 1, Melissa’s is basically a mirror of her portfolio (how many times is she going to make that fucking dress?), Elena’s is pretty much a more colorful version of her pre-PR portfolio, Dmitry and Sonjia seem to have actually lost ground, and Fabio is a little expected.

  • alula_auburn

Ven = BORING.  Not even beautiful, but boring for most of them.

Sonjia–what is on the first model’s head?!?  I’m not loving the black lace.  Dress 3 is kinda cute, but nothing special.  Kind of lackluster over all.  Sadface.

(this is the first time I’ve ever looked at the collections before the show aired.  I don’t think it would be possible to “spoil” the excitement of seeing any of these.)

  • Amy Parikh

After seeing all of the final collections, I really have no desire to continue watching this season. Makes me kind of depressed seeing these. Elena’s is probably the strongest… but that choice of lipstick really takes away from the whole look and takes away some credibility as a serious designer who has taste. You could ask my four year old niece, and she’d ixnay the lipstick in a would anyone with taste. Such an amateur decision in my opinion. Gunner’s seems really culturally inappropriate, even if there are one or two interesting outfits in there. Ven, meh, not worthy of any comment. Sonja, WTF. It’s really sad because she seemed to be one of the few people on this season that had interesting taste. The finale is so unrestricted, that I think the contestants either get overwhelmed with the freedom, or their true design ability was finally allowed to show. Not sure.

    • mhleta

I actually really liked the lipstick on Elena’s. It locked it firmly in the futuristic…referential of something I can’t quite put my finger on….film wise. TLo?

      • Amy Parikh

Ya I get how it fits in with the theme of the clothes. I just think it’s so glaring that it takes away from the clothes…and it comes off rather fashion student-y for that reason.

  • Sonjia has some cool, edgy pieces, but this is NOT a collection. I see new fabrics and colors and themes with every new look. And even when some of them do look like they go together, most of the looks are throwaways. Actually, that’s the thing I’m most dissapointed in: that more than half of these look like thrown together. I was hoping to see her signature outerwear a lot more, but unluckily for her, it has to be a spring collection.

Ven. Ugh. It just shows you how limited his range is when you see the same exact dress in three different colors and the same white dress twice–one long and one short. And these are all so SHINY that it actually looks cheap and distracting. I actually am a big fan of his black sheer top because it’s edgier but still retains Ven’s sophistication. I think going in a direction like that would be more successful than this “clearance bridal shop” thing he’s got going on.

    • mhleta

These scream “decoy collection” don’t they?

      • I dunno. Ven and Sonjia and Christopher all have two wins under their belts, so they seem like contenders for the final three even though I’m not a big fan of any of their collections.

DEAR GOD, if they ARE the final three, Christopher’s winning since Ven is so pageant and Sonjia is so schizophrenic. Nope. Nope. Not letting that happen, nope. Even though her mood swings are hard to watch, Elena deserves to win for her stunning sportswear collection.

        •  No, Elena’s this season’s Laura Kathleen, Austin Scarlett, Kara Janx… Every season seems to have one decoy who everyone raves about and considers a serious contender based on that collection alone — only to discover they were a decoy.  And it’s not as a shocking twist, because most fans don’t see the decoys unless they’re also fans of this site or some other like it.  There’s just at least one designer in every season who is an excellent designer but doesn’t handle the format of the competition well.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

oy vey. does there have to be a winner?

none of these collections is horrendous. not one of them. none of them, otoh, are anywhere near as good as the best of the collections from this show. the sad truth is, at least to me, almost all of them are high end department store work. the best of that circles barney’s drain. the worst of it isnt too bad, it’s like from nordstrom’s savvy. & the stuff that stands out–deathrage’s shock treatment, fabio’s semi-demi postmodern hippie loungewear–is just kinda off. some pieces in all of the collections are good [including from these two] but as design collections? too standard. sad for that.

i’m wondering if this is cos, by the end, all the contestants know the contest is fixed? i’m wondering if they find that too demoralizing. i probably would, were i there. then again, i already know it’s fixed so i wouldnt put myself there. but i’m wearier than most.

of these two i think ven’s the winner. not cos i like it, just cos it’s ostentatious. i think it looks like fairly standard, somewhat old-fashioned, somewhat pretentious red carpet wear. w/ roses. adhered. not quite adhered, folded in, i guess. draped in. something.

the only piece amongst all of these that i remember enough to like is sonjia’s kneeline shredded pantsskirt. i dont know what it is, exactly, so pantsskirt will have to do. it’s fresh. i’ve forgotten everything else. other than the roses, of course, but i’ve seen them for weeks. damn.

  • mhleta

Oh no!! I’m so disappointed in Sonji’s collection. I really love her and wanted her to win, but this is kind of awful. Please, no lace unless you can do something utterly impeccable with it. Ven has shown ZERO growth through this whole process. His creativity begins and ends with this origami rose process. Disappointing.

  • Ven’s looks like a wedding party and a tacky one at that.  There are a couple of dresses, but that rose doesn’t work.

  • mhleta

Tom and Lorenzo, you RASCALS! You almost had us, you did! The more I think about it the more certain I am that our faery pranksters were enlisted to throw us off by feeding us decoy collections. I’m certain that when we watch the show, we’ll see the REAL collections, because these can’t possibly be it. Right? Right? Can’t you just hear Tim? “Finalist designers, congratulations! Now that you’ve completed your real collections, you will be facing another challenge. You have $30 to use at Mood to design a decoy collection. [Enter previously auffed designers.] You have 15 minutes to sketch and 37 minutes to shop at Mood AND create an entire collection with the assistance of these contestants with questionable taste and design skills. Feel free to plunder your design school collections if you get desperate. Your time starts…now!” You crazy kids, TLo! You almost had us. Psych!

  • PhillipWilde

Sonjia’s collection contains one cute, one fugly, a couple yawns, and several WHAT?!s.

Ven’s collection was clearly inspired by Georgia O’Keefe.

  • Vodeeodoe

Why am I not surprised that Ven loaded up on the fishtails? That guy is just not creative. Dude can make a mean rose though.

  • alula_auburn

You know, for all Ven loves his supposed elegance, a few of those slits (both height and position) make me question his taste level.  As it were.

(Unless he REALLY wants to play up the whole rose=vagina theme.)

  • libraangel

Is anyone else sick of the sheer-below-knee-look as I am??!!!

  • kikisayshi

Sonjia has my vote for the most interesting collection overall. I really really hope she’s one of the finalists.

  • geeeque

ven is so totally overrated. i never liked those stupid roses he can’t stop making, they are ugly and tortured and old. his ego is completely out of proportion to his talent.

  • geeeque

is sonjia tootie?!? why is her collection so bad? girlfriend on the show seems to have such cool and classy taste, this shit is terrible!

  • Kara Keenan

Ven’s collection looks so bridal. Not loving Sonjia’s either.

  • i actually had to go back and count ven’s pieces…when i got to the end, i was like “wait, he only did like 4 pieces?”. then i counted and realized he actually did 10, but they’re all the same damn piece! in a shitty valentine’s day pallette. i had such hopes for him at the beginning…mostly because i consistently read Ven Budhu as Zen Buddha. and he looks like one too.

  • NCDFan

Too much lace, too much satin.

  • Wow.  Hate them both!

  • oohsparkley!

Really disappointed in Sonjia’s. I expected more. Ven’s = of course.

  • Mark Boston

Is Sanjia designing costumes for the next Star Trek movie? Because…wow…

  • I seriously never feel compelled to comment but is Ven only capable of making things with that damn rose and in shiny fabrics?!

    • After what Heidi told him about being out on his butt if she ever saw another rose, he can’t be in the final 3.

  • alwaysanswerc

Sonjia, transparent black lace? Really? This trend needs to DIE.

  • Whoa.
I was looking for Ven’s absolutely gorgeous model in his collection when I realized she ISN’T THERE and LIKE ALL HIS MODELS ARE WHITE.

Ugh, Ven. Shapist. Sexist. Racist. What’s next?

  • I can NOT believe ven is even still in the running. He has turned out the same design again and again. After the fiasco with the REAL WOMAN challenge, he proved he is merely a window dresser with no real talent. Try doing Christmas front windows during the season. Perhaps Say Yes to the Dress has an opening for an alterations girl. I want to see a REAL designer at work, he is NOT a REAL designer.

  • FashionableLena

Ven’s clothes are stunning and extremely well-made.  The rose thing is his signature.
Sonjia’s clothes are hit or miss.  The individual pieces are nice, but I don’t like the styling.  But, hooray for separates.

  • Gad – these are DREADFUL.
Sonjia – WTH?  Nothing cohesive, unless we want to count black lace (haven’t we all learned the dangers in working with lace?) and some horrible prints in a few of those pieces.  Random, uninspired, unconnected.
Ven – Yeah. Quell surprise. Roses.

  • Ven made Prom clothes.  Imagine that.

  • Ven is one way monkey.

  • This proves Ven is not among the final three. He’s been warned 0ver and over about those roses on everything.  If he were in the running for anything, he’d never have used this strategy.

  • After reviewing the collections for the first time since Gunnar’s elim…I’m putting my bet in. I think Sonjia might take it.

  • I love both of these collections.  Bravo!  #claps

  • Adrianna Grezak

Sonjia’s is styled so poorly. For example, I think the dress in the third picture is fascinating, but why is it paired with the black suit jacket?!

  • Spencer Cunningham

Sonjia’s 4th look is more Avant-Garde than any of the looks from the last episode

  • Love Sonjia’s 4th look!

  • 9th and 10th looks of Ven’s are really nice. I think Ven is like Austin Scarlett…he has a niche, he does well there, and that will probably do well for him business -wise.  There really wasn’t a “ready to wear” star in this season…but every designer isn’t meant to be a ready to wear star.
