Pairs Division: Mendes & Gosling

Posted on September 08, 2012

Ryan is wearing a gorgeous suit and Eva is wearing a gorgeous dress that’s a skosh too long on her.

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling attend the premiere of ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’ during the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. Eva Mendes wore a Dolce&Gabbana dress paired with Casadei Shoes. Rya Gosling wore a Gucci suit.

Dolce&Gabbana Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Katryn Kruger

Scoring? Pfft. We don’t need no stinking scoring. It’s a Saturday, we’re tired, he’s Ryan Gosling and she’s WEARING A HALF TURBAN ON THE RED CARPET OH JESUS WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW FOR SERVING UP JESSYE NORMAN REALNESS, EVA MENDES.

Don’t even think of arguing with us on this one. Just bow down.

    ya ya ya

  • Turban = automatic disqualification; 50 game suspension; massive fine.

    • Sobaika

Excuse you, turbans are fab. Even if you don’t agree, Eva is looking pretty fab here. Love it all, even if the D&G is a teensy bit too long.

      • Please. In half the pictures she’s looking straight up at it, going “dear god, have I actually left the house with this on my head?”

        • Sobaika

Everyone is looking straight up, for some weird reason.

          • Right? How weird are they being? It’s like the Angelina Jolie pose with her leg outside her skirt. There’s some joke we’re just not getting.

      • I agree! A well deployed turban takes a masters degree in diva-ness and she is WERQ-ing it! It helps that her face has spectacular features.

      • SassieCassy

So I love turbans too but I think you pretty much need to have graduates WERQ school to wear one and/or be a person of color. Dont ask me to explain that one but ive seen a few skinny blonde little fashionista olsen wannabes try and wear them and look DUMB.

    • Did you not hear them? It’s a HALF TURBAN!

      • patticake1601

then I only half hate it

  • colleenjanel

I love him, but he deserves to lose a point for keeping his hands shoved in his pockets!

    • StelledelMare

I actually thought that was kinda odd considering he was standing next to his supposed girlfriend. Shouldn’t his arm be around her or something? I dunno be he looks amazing. I feel sort of meh about her look. Maybe because she’s one of those actresses that I’ve never understood the appeal of (and I can’t think of a single thing she’s been in). But even with the turban it’s not setting the world on fire

      • teensmom99

I love her look always and this is perfect.  She knows the red carpet like no one else.  And just want to put in a pitch for couples who love each other but are not necessarily arm and arm at all moments.

      • The only thing I can ever remember about her when I see her is that she was in the incredibly underwhelming Hitch. And that sums her up perfectly.

  • theblondette

    Turban wins every time.

    • Kristin McNamara

I don’t understand the fascination with turbans…….. not even a little bit.

      • Melvis Velour

To quote Igor from “Young Frankenstein” “…soitenly, you take the blonde and I’ll take the one in the toiban..rrrufff!”  I think they’re fierce and fabulicious and it takes balls to pull ’em off!

        • littlemac8

I will “LIKE” anybody who quotes Igor (EYE-gore) (E-gore)!!!!

          • MilaXX

            It’s FrankenSTEEN!

          • Christiane Truelove

I don’t care how many times I see that movie, that moment ALWAYS kills me.

      • It’s the attitude. It takes a lot of nerve to even put one on, even moreso on the RC.

  • moppet

I just want to know what they’re all looking at that is slightly above their heads. They remind me of my cat when I’m trying to get her to play with her mousie on a stick.

    • That’s all I could think, too.  Why is NO ONE looking at any of the cameras?  Do you think they’re all a little publicity-whoring slap happy, and they’re making ridiculous bets with each other? “I know, we’re going through this entire photo call, and none of us are going to look straight at a lens.  It’ll drive the paparazzi insane!  Go team!”

  • I love the colors on that tux – beautiful take on pinstripe.

  • Scimommy

Not gonna argue with you. But why is everyone raising their eyes up to the heavens?

  • Ezmartin

Wow this is the first ten out of ten for a real couple. The only other time was viola and Meryl. History is being made at TLO Int.!

  • IAmJ

She looks like a goddess here. He still does nothing for me but his suit really is fantastic.

  • kalisa

Do not like them together. she looks like Laura Ingalls. He’s wearing brown. Not even close to matching. No. Just no.

    • colleenjanel

Laura Ingalls? Are we looking at the same woman?

      • Anathema_Device

You haven’t read her lesser known work, “Little Penthouse on the Strip”?

    Oh, how I love it!

  • Araina23

First time I’ve thought of Gosling as Clooney-esque.

    • Dahling, welcome. It’s nice up here.

  • I’m glad she wore a full slip or whatever that is under that dress, rather than the granny panties and bandeau bra thing that the model is wearing. I don’t get the turban and I don’t get why they’re all looking up. And Ryan Gosling….mmmm, yummy.

    • Lori

ITA on the lining for the dress. It looks so much better than the granny panties, bra and trouser socks OMG from the runway look. What the hell is up with that and when are designers going to stop already?

I also don’t really “get” turbans, but I still sort of love that she wore it. That makes no sense really, but there it is.

  • Anne At Large

  • Judy_J

AND he’s wearing a belt! As for her, every time I see a turban, all I can think of is Sally Field in “Soapdish” (“Gloria fu*king Swanson!)

    •  God I love that movie. THE MAYOR OF PROVIDENCE!!

    • CarolinLA

I think she looks like Gloria fucking Swanson and not in a good way.  I hate this look.

  • janetjb

The first photo is when one of them said, “hey let’s all look up!”.
    I think it’s funny.

  • pattyw

I believe she’s wearing a turband, a hybrid creature created by crossing a turban with a headband.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Seriously!! I have been contemplating – Can I do a half turban?  The casual one she wore with the fab blue summer dress the other day has me thinking….soooooo much cooler than a headband.  She makes it look not cray cray.  Can mere mortal pull this off??

    • Yes. And Etsy actually has some adorable designs. Just trudge through the junk with a stern eye.

  • TonyGo

She looks very Kiss of the Spider Woman.  And I mean that in a good way.

  • Judy_J

AND he’s wearing a belt! As for her, I love the turban, even though I always think of Sally Field in “Soapdish.”

  • Judy_S

Totally agree with the score. I enjoyed looking at these pictures. Beautiful people in wonderful clothing.

  • Love you Ryan, looking good!!!

  • HELL YES, I’d wear a turban in the middle of a Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper sandwich.

  • Bowed down.

  • VicksieDo

Bowing down! Amazing looks for both of them!!

  • Ruth Preston

No arguments from this corner. That dress is stunning beyond words.

    • bluefish

Very Auntie Mame to my eyes.  Don’t care for the look either.  Turbans are made for crisp white shirts like the one he’s wearing and a classic belted full skirt.

  • m0r0

She looks ridiculous. Not in a good way.

  • teensmom99

She has always been a red carpet favorite of mine.  This is perfection.  I bow to you, TLo.

  • Wow. For the good of humanity, I hope those two procreate.

  • Anathema_Device

I think he needs a tie. She is perfection. I never would have pegged her as the one to rock the half turban on the red carpet, but there is she is, rocking it to Hell and back.

  • Why are they all looking to heaven like that?

  • j_anson

    I’m with ya.

  • could we start a campaign for more attractive backdrops on the red carpet?  this looks like they’re standing in a warehouse against a stack of cardboard boxes.

  • I actually never really liked her until now. Turbans are powerful things.

His suit is making me drool a little.

  • MRC210

She looks stunning.  His suit is nice but … shirt buttoned at the neck and no tie, hands in pockets, neckbeard, so … No.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

She has the perfect figure to work that dress, and the good sense to stand up as straight and tall as possible. I didn’t notice the turban at first but girl is WERQIN it! His look gives me some weird cross of Steve McQueen and Michael Stipe, which is not a criticism because he looks good. Weird can be good.

I wasn’t sure about them as a couple, but I think I can see it now. He’s a baby playa and she’s the sassy diva to keep him in check. I’ve loved her ever since she threw broccoli at Will Smith in Hitch.

  • MerBearStare

I hate when guys button the top button. It makes them look like they’re in a religious cult.

    • mshesterp

Egg-ZACTLY. I think he looks kind of silly, but the suit itself is nice.

  • Sorry, but I’m not feeling healthy enough to bow.  You would think, with all the money that Eva Mendes has, and with the reputation of Dolce and Gabbana on the line, that SOMEONE would have figured out how to hem the dress or shorten the skirt, or something, to make it work!!!

  • Laylalola

He’s beautiful and the shirt’s so beautiful too — but he needs either the top button unbuttoned or a tie. It just looks … stifling and makes me want to reach for my own neck, like I’m choking.

  • Qdahling

Yes! I was hoping for a Pairs Division on these two. Thank you!! Perfect score 😀

  • lesmaha

    I bow down!!!!

  • nannypoo

That dress is more than a skosh too long. My grandmother was a very fashionable woman, and she always wore her dresses that length. She would have worn the turban, too. Both were better suited to my grandmother than to Eva Mendes IMHO.

    • CurbGirl

I’m with you, nannypoo. I thought this make Ms Mendes look short, old and dumpy.

  • Lilithcat

Oh, please.  She oughtn’t to be named in the same breath as Miss Norman.

As for him, there are few things silllier-looking than a man who buttons his collar buttons and doesn’t wear a tie. And he needs a shave.

  • Does he dress to the left or is that a trick of the light? And he either needs to wear a tie or undo a button. She is perfection (although I do think you should go full turban or go home, these faux turban headbands aren’t my favourite).

  • bluefish

Let’s see — we have a turban and earrings and a belt and super busy though pretty dress and a beauty mark and Crawford’s eyebrows?  She looks ridiculous — You two must be beyond exhausted … Way way too much going on and too harsh.  She’s a beautiful woman who always looks best dressed more simply.  She looks like the bitchy mother in law in Tortilla Soup!  Played by Rachel Welch.

He’s got on a great suit and I like the shirt.  And of course I have to criticize here because I can’t have him … ever!

  • maryjaneflats

she looks like the second coming of Sophia Loren!

  • That’s right baby…JESSE NORMAN!  I was thinking Eva Perone….But I love Jesse Norman, and they look wonderful.  I’m totally digging turbans….Oooh I hope Fabio wears his again on Project Runway!

  • Snailstsichr

I’m so happy she lined the dress, I have no quibbles with the ten.

  • I won’t bow down, I’m being completely obstinate (my big word for the day)!  She’s always been on my Irrational Hate List, so at best, I’d only be nice in a pouty, bratty, begrudging manner if she looked good.  But she doesn’t, so HEEEEEEY!!  The dress is way too “Grandma at the Wedding”, and with the turban thrown in, she’s serving up some serious “Sunset Boulevard” way before her time.

  • MissMariRose

I don’t care what she’s wearing. She standing between Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper. I can only weep with jealousy.

  • Eva is WERQing some latin-drag-Liz-Taylor realness so bad that I kind of love that bitch. I couldn’t stand her before, but now she’s SERVING IT.

  • carolynmo

Wow, his suit is incredible. He’s just delicious to look at.

  • TieDye64

She should always wear a turban. Forever.

  • Esz

    LOVE it!

The length on the dress – its not really a dress that can be taken up very easily given that delicate, sheer fabric. So unless they made one custom for her, it’s understandable that it’s that long. She still looks great.

  • Melvis Velour

Excuse me but what is it with the angelic upward looks?  Are they expecting some deity to come down and buy some tickets?

  • Tatiana Luján

    They both look so phoney.

  • Damn, they both look fucking flawless.

  • bitterk

ha, i think she looks a tad bit coo coo for coco puffs but I do like the posing

  • Trisha26

TLo – Please stop critiquing during Fashion Week. You’re clearly both delusional. Her: Half-turban=0 points. Dress length is cancelled out by her not wearing the runway bra/panties look. Yay! Him: Agree it’s a gorgeous suit, but hands in pockets is really throwing me off in the fit area and even though it’s a “thing” now, hate the buttoned up shirt without a tie.

  • guest2visits

Agree they both look very fabulous. I don’t even like turbans – but Eva knows what she’s doing; it looks perfect!

  • Patricia Gillett

Eva is fabulous. That dress and whatever foundation garments she has on are doing amazing things to her figure. And girl is WERQ-ing that turban like a 40s film star on the MGM lot. Who the hell cares what he’s wearing, everyone needs to just enjoy looking at her in all her Latina Joan Crawford glory.

  • msdamselfly

I Dont like his facial hair

  • TSkot

Can’t get into this turban fad; save it for the grand dams who need to give their wigs a night off.

  • Le_Sigh

Lurve the turban!  I’m wondering why they’re all looking up in half the photos.

  • Carrieanno

    The turban.  Ick.

  • Wouldn’t half a turban technically be a double headband? And just WTH is so interesting on the mezzanine that they’re all staring at it?

  • Kathleen B

no argument. they both rule. the end.

  • No arguments here.

BTW, there is a new Hey Girl I Heart NPR tumblr. As in, “Hey Girl, You’re more Splendid than Lynn Rosetto Kasper’s Table”

  • quiltrx

Anyway, I can’t stand her, but props on the headband/turban.  And I do like him…and props for the Peter Gabriel-esque shirt!!

  • Not argue?  I take that as a challenge.  The turban thingy on Eva is doing her no favors. The color, though it is a great one for her, is far enough from her face to be rendered pointless.  You are right, of course, about the hem length of her dress.  It needs, for her, to be only just past the knee.  Ryan? Well, I loves me some Gosling, and the suit is perfection both in color, and tailoring. But GET YOUR G D HANDS OUT OF YOUR POCKETS. And though I get the whole no tie thing, that is too much of an expanse of unbroken white. It needs a tie to carve it up a skosh.

    There, my arguing is done.
    Damn, that’s exhausting.

    • guest2visits

Let me cautiously step in to ask; if Gosling unbuttoned the top (like Cooper) – would that be a better look?
And….. I think they’re doing that 40s movie era thing where ‘the stars’ would look upward and away from the camera,
possibly that was considered the more flattering angle back then. It could be they’re spoofing in honor of Eva’s
      outfit (turban).  Y/N?

      • I think his opening his collar even just one button would relieve the severity of all that white a bit.
It does rather seem like they are all doing that look up and away thing deliberately.  It really doesn’t quite work for them, does it?  When George Hurrell was photographing stars in that manner it was under highly controlled conditions, with the best possible lighting. This is not that situation, and it shows.

        • guest2visits

Ha! learned me something new.. (thankyou Google);  what a career Mr. Hurrell had, from the late 20s thru
to the 80s. looks like.  I’m not sure when that heavenward gaze was most prominent; could have been the
20s-30s.  But yes, the celebs look like they’re playing around here.
The more you look at it, the more annoying the shirt is without the tie. If he’s going to be casual, may as well undo the neck too. It’s like the old desperado photos where the gunslingers are buttoned to the chin
          in their Sunday best.

    • Thank you for being the defense on this one.  I felt the same way.  She rocked the turban a few weeks back, but with this dress (with that dreaded mid calf length) is not doing it for me.

  • Judy Raddue

Sunday plans just changed… Must construct TLo altar after that Jessye Norman reference… I prostrate myself before you!

  • Pennymac

Bowing Down. I’ve said my piece, I’ve counted to three. I’m done talking.

  • The turban ages her and she looks like his mother (MILF nonetheless).

  • SophieCollier

What the hell is on the ceiling that has them all staring at it?

  • Vaniljekjeks

I think the entire internet (you guys, aside) will disagree with me, but they make a really good looking couple.

  • formerlyAnon

Diva-ness acknowledged but – perhaps it’s the length – this makes her look short. I mean, I KNOW she is a small person, but normally it doesn’t strike me when I look at her.

  • BrooklynBomber

Where else but here would I see “JESSYE NORMAN REALNESS”?  ♥♥♥

    • Clueless_Jock

Jessye Norman could never pull of that dress though.

  • Susan Crawford

    I’m groveling. Eva . . . Ryan . . . AND a shout-out to Jessye Norman in one TLo post? I die.

  • RocknLox

What are these people looking at?

  • libraangel

Her version of the dress looks better than the bra-and-panties runway one. HA HA I thought that was HER hair piled up until I saw the close-up of a turban.

  • I knew the turban would clinch it.

  • turtleemily

But it’s Bradley Cooper’s expression in the first pic that keeps getting me to scroll back up. Too cute!

  • I.

  • I think they both look fabulous (Ryan is on my Irrational Celebrity LOVE List), but I kinda hate the turban. Otherwise, snaps all around.

  • Groveling.

  • Ali

I love her turban, but to me, that’s just not her dress. It belongs on Marion Cotillard, I think.

  • Tom

Best Jessye Norman reference of the day!  She hasn’t quite got the Jessye stare down yet, though.

  • Larkin21

She looks outstanding. Love his suit but don’t like the completely buttoned shirt with no tie.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Ok, she looks fierce as hell. I hope this becomes a thing with her, because she’s got such a good face for turbans. Love the face she’s giving.
I love me some Gosling, but the one thing I find disturbing about him is that when you see him in shirtless shots, he’s all big guns and muscular shoulders, but when he puts on a suit, all of the sudden he looks scrawny in the upper bod. How does this happen and why??

    • gorghast

I agree.  He looks like he has no shoulders here.  I think he is fit, but his actual shoulder to waist ratio isn’t ideal.

  • marilyn

At least she had the good taste to have the dress lined and not wear a necklace with it.  Kudos!

  • Cathy S

Love the turban. It was the first thing I said (“Turban!”) after thinking, “yeah, the dress is a little long.”

  • Jessie Coulter

Snaps for the Jessye Norman reference.

  • For all my irrational dislike of her (it’s irrational, I don’t have to justify it!), Eva Mendes has the face to werq turbans.

  • Trevor Scott

Why does it look like they’re keeping tabs on the status of a wasps nest somewhere up and off camera right?
