Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013 Collection

Posted on September 14, 2012

This is, hands down, our favorite Oscar collection in quite some time – and that’s saying something because we’ve always loved his work. The old school femininity and lady-like aesthetic that defines the brand is still on full display here, but there’s a youthful punchiness to the work, evident in the bold colors, pattern-mixing and graphic elements. That combination of lady and rebel is quite appealing, and not a road one would expect Oscar to go down.  Enjoy the brightly colored pretty, darlings. We certainly did.

I wonder if Babe Paley would have worn teal and magenta in the same outfit.

  • PastryGoddess

Whats kind of hilarious is the model trying to out-Kloss Karlie Kloss.

This is a really great collection and I love love love that blue/turquoise petal/flower encrusted dress towards the bottom.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

I love that retro candy-pink/aqua color combo. So Betty Draper’s bedroom.

  • The pink Dalek dress made me roll my eyes.  But as a whole, I like this a lot.

  • the striped gown. want. want. want.

    • prettybigkitty

I’ll fight you for it.   L-O-V-E!

      • MissAnnieRN

you will both have to get through me first!

        •  I think we’ll have to bowl over some hollywood starlet lol  it’s a great red carpet dress!

  • AlinaValero

that striped dress literally took my breath away AGAIN even after i saw oscarPRgirl tweet it.

    • Kristin McNamara

I can’t wait for some really brave, fierce ladystar to rock that on a red carpet!

  • Jessica Bevan

    I’ll take one of everything.

  • Sobaika

That bold black and white striped gown is the stuff of dreams.

  • call_me_schmeg

omg, can fan bing bing please please please wear the white/hot pink squiggle dress (with that awesome belt) in the 8th set?!

  • mjude

  • He’s definitely one of my top favorite designers.  He proves himself time and again.  No questionable taste level. Ever.

  • No Platform shoes. THANK GOODNESS.

  • ralish

I think this is my favorite collection this season. Gorgeous. And look at all of those colors! Those ivory jackets and skirts are lovely.

  • hughman

The separates are very Power Lunch at the Four Seasons while the gowns seem very Gloria Upson to me. So kudos to Oscar for spanning the ages.

  • tereliz

I thought this was a beautiful collection, even if it seemed to me to be part Oscar/part Chanel. Like Oscar feels the need to fill the void for well-tailored luxury tweed suits left by crazy Uncle Karl. Grazie, Oscar! The striped gown is my favorite, but there are some killer casual/day looks here, particularly the chevron-y skirts with the yellow crochet knits!

  • This makes me smile so hard. I love it.

  • Vanja

While it looks beautiful, colours/shapes, it’s a bit too ladylike for me. I love the multicoloured skirt in row six on the left.

  • joolyz

my favorite collection from fashion week by FAR. the colors are gorgeous. the striped gown, and the pink/turquoise gown took my breath away.

    • Tatiana Luján

      I want the
       pink/turquoise jacket.

  • Vickiefantastico

Could I just have one of everything? Thanks.

  • oh. my. god. Affirmation yet again that de la Renta is my favorite designer. That striped floor-length made me catch my breath, but the real winner was the cream dress in the second row.

  • In_Stitches

Poor Kristin Stewart is going to end up in half of it and she’s going to hate it.

  • Roosevelt 85

    Three thoughts:

    1) Karlie Kloss is FIERCE AS SHIT!

    2) What’s with the Dior circular hems?

    3) I guess two-tone hair is officially a THING. Is that why all my 14 yr old nieces are sporting that HIDEOUS look?

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Thank god it’s not only my niece/17 year-old sister-in-law. They both have very golden tan skin, with ash blonde/black two-tone. It really is HIDEOUS.

  • AuntieAnonny

It’s like a mix of good taste, graffiti, and Roy Lichtenstein. Perfect.

  • I wonder who’s going to wear those red carpet gowns.

  • Kyle Crawford

I know its Oscar and he has a built in big money base, Love some of these, most of them… but am I the only one seeing MANY traces of Uncle Karl in this collection ?!? You cant say that Chanel owns all boxy check suits, but change it up a bit… and #4 in the middle was on the Chanel runway a few seasons ago, wasnt it?

  • MinkaL

Emma Stone came to mind immediately looking at this collection. And if I can hog tie Lea Michele’s stylist and whoever is doing her hair and makeup lately and hide them in a closet for the duration of awards season, I also think she could be a de la renta girl again. Those shades of yellow and pink would look amazing on her. Same for the lovely Ms. Saldana. I want her in that fierce pink, blue bulbed, gown right now.

    • MilaXX

Agreed that pink gown screams Zoe to me.

  • A little too much lace in places but much more interesting than MKors’ offerings.

  • MissMariRose

The first outfit makes me think that, no matter how much he disses her, ole Oscar is desperately trying to get Mrs. O to wear his stuff.

    • zombie_nurse

Ah yes! This is totally what I thought as well.

  • I love that hot pink is in this season. I LOVE the hot pink gown with the little blue ball details- it’s pretty cheeky 😛

  • Wow…

  • MilaXX

I can’t say I would ever consider an Oscar de la Renta youthful or edgy, but I like a lot of this. The exceptions are the blue peplum on the first row, the 2nd & 3rd looks on the second row and the turquoise leather with the pink jacket. The rest is really quite nice and I love the vibrant colors.

  • tallgirl1204

    LOVE the gold fabric-strip skirt.

  • Lauren Frankel

Favorite collection yet. OdlR never fails to amaze me.

  • NCDFan

    My Mom would like them.

  • jilly_d

Youthful is damn right! I would do some seriously morally ambiguous things for that striped ballgown!

  • Eva_baby

Hmm… I’m seeing lots of doilies.  Very…Lady of a Certain Age.

I really like the left-most outfits on the first three rows.  Those all  seems very sharp & chic.  And then nothing until we get to that stunning white, sleek gown with the single black stripe.  But really. I am mentally superimposing Nancy Reagan’s head on most of the models because they mostly look like something she’d wear.

  • Victoria Sharoyan

  • Zippypie

I’m surprised you boys liked this.  There’s a whole lot of matronly and grandma doilies going on here.  With the exception of the striped gown, I’m not getting youthful at all.

  • DinaSews

Was Oscar the one who had a contest to base his next collection on? If so, was this the one? Or will we see it in spring?

  • Lisa Kramp

    Love, love, love.

  • I can’t get over how absolutely MAD I am for this collection. Love everything. I think the hair extensions are my favorite though.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I will take all the jewelry (but the brooch on third look, first row if I am forced to choose), both offset-chevron-print skirts in the sixth row, and the turquoise gown in the center of the last row. J’adore cette collection! Particularly the hot pink gown with teal embellishment, but it is not meant for this bod.  On Emma Stone or Rachel McAdams, perhaps? Just send me the necklace and it’s all yours, ladies.

  • Deedles

Ooooo… Far left, fourth row from the bottom reminds me of an inverse of the FABULOUS Givenchy dress Audrey Hepburn wore in “Sabrina.” I adore these mid-20th century inspired dresses!

  • sleepycat

    Love this collection!

  • Buffy

Yellow!  I’d love it for that alone (why is there not more yellow in the world?) but all of it is gorgeous.

  • libraangel

Some misses, but overall gorgeous! MUCH better than too-simple Michael Kors!

  • Kirsten Henry

    This collection is just breathtaking

  • guest2visits

I love it all; I want to live in Oscar’s house.  Along with the gowns, I especially love the elongated skirts.

  • I could see our FLOTUS wearing some of these, and she’d be lovely in them.

  • I love, love, LOVE this collection! My favorites are the bold prints, the yellows, and the black & whites. Plus, the 2 black and white gowns are GORGE.

  • bitterk

Love all but the few rows populated with doily and lace-covered uglies.

  • IAmJ

I am floored. Stunning, stunning collection. The colors and prints are TO DIE.

  • quiltrx

    It’s all pretty great!

(I have to say, I’ve really enjoyed MOST of the collections this FW…not always the case.)

  • Can’t help it, love a cotton candy strapless gown! All very pretty.

  • DesertDweller79

I’m in love with it!  It seems like every season I think de la Renta’s is my favorite collection.  Yet never have I more wished to be filthy rich than right now.

  • marilyn

Mixed prints.  Black lace.  Jackie O. style clothes.  BUnheads.  How boring.

  • New favorite! Love!

  • ccm800

the skirts in the yellow row – esp the horizontal pieced chevron looking one are fantastic. i love this collection

  • crash1212

Man, I lurve those gowns. I would cut a bitch for the striped one. Beauty.

  • Bozhi

Pretty, especially the last few rows starting with the black and whites.

  • Coralie Legister

It’s so vibrant and full of life! Yet classy and chic! I’m in love.

  • I love the black and white gowns in the first of the gown rows.

  • Oh, I love everything here, just totally everything!  The feathery light-turquoise gown in the middle of the last row?  AMAZING!

  • mayavaly

This collection is stunning. I came to take a look after the ‘handbags at 10 paces’ with Cathy Horyn hilarity (something was clearly lost in translation with regard to the use of ‘hot dog’). If anything. I thought her commentary was a little non-committal, with just the slightest hint that she meant ‘hot dog’ (flashy with little regard for function) pejoratively. I happen to totally disagree with that suggestion though, as I would be utterly thrilled to wear almost everything in this collection.

  • MissAnnieRN

I WANT that B&W striped gown.

The styling here is perfection.  This is amazing.  Favorite of the collections thus far.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I must say those tea length in front/longer in back ball gowns are just lovely.   What a pretty pretty thing to own and wear.  Yay.

  • Daenyx

I kind of hate it, actually…  The black and white gown with the side slit is GORGEOUS, and I like the black and white scribbled-looking row above it, but almost everything else made me wrinkle my nose.  It’s too fussy for me, and reads the exact opposite of ‘youthful,’ for the most part – a lot of the separates remind me of what I used to see the receptionists (middle-aged women) at my mother’s office wearing, fifteen years or so ago.

  • ChristinaRi

Can Michelle Obama wear that aqua ballerina length gown to the inauguration ball, please?

  • Enchanting (sigh)

  • those are some awful colors

  • CarolinLA

    A little Barbie-ish for me.

  • piecesofconfetti

I will take one of each. Except that black striped gown. I will take 2 of those.

  • mary_berry

    Me encanta

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Cannot WAIT to see that black and white striped/chevroned gown on someone FABULOUS.  🙂

  • Nonnah

    L O V E !!!

  • nancylee61

His best pieces look like he took mondo’s ideas as his own. The rest leave me cold.

  • can’t wait to see these on the RC!!
