Nicole Miller Spring 2013 Collection

Posted on September 09, 2012

The notes for this show (entitled “Batteries Not Included”) referenced ’80s surrealist art, techno, sci-fi, “digital nature,” and, the one that tied it all together for us, “bad girl/good girl.” That latter phrase tends to hit right at the heart of Nicole Miller, whose recent collections straddle that line between “pretty princess” and “rocker chick” – not that the two should ever be seen as mutually exclusive, just that Nicole Miller is especially in tune with that line and what lies on either side of it. In this case, wild digital prints, skinny pants, pretty dresses from floaty to tailored, and just the right amount of attitude.

who is the model with the multi-colored hair?

    • SewingSiren

Yep, she’s the most remarkable thing about the collection. Without the hair, not so much. She looks almost exactly like the girl standing next to her on the third row. I wonder if they’re sisters.

  • hughman

OMG, “JORTS”!! IT BURNS! MAKE IT STOP!

I needed a word for that abomination, thanks. I was “ohh, pretty prints… cool…I like the floARE THOSE SHORT JEGGINGS WHY?”

  • SewingSiren

I like the model with the orange and green hair.

  • aristida_girl

Love love love the galaxy print…

  • Zippypie

Meh. Scary ass 80s prints.  Shapes are nice but scary ass 80s prints.

  • Scarlet39

It’s a strange collection.  It’s a little bit Forever21, JCPenneys, and Chico’s all at the same time.

    • meowing

Well said.  The shapes are awfully repetitive, too, and not in a good way.  Not my cup of chai.

  • Tatiana Luján

Some dresses are very pretty, but the collection seems very Forever 21 to me. That’s never a good sign.

  • Sara__B

Nothing lived up to the promise of that first dress. I’m disappointed.

I’m liking this new JoeZee-i-fied Nicole Miller.  The one thing I have always love about NM  is her ability to distill all of the disparate influences in her runway shows to the things that you can buy in the store.

I’m loving this color palette, love the skinny jeans and the shapes of the tops and jackets.

  • quiltrx

I like this!  The prints are very cool.

  • snarkykitten

In the words of Fillbert Turtle: I’m nauseous. I’m nauseous. I’m nauseous.

  • TomBord

    H & M(iller).

  • NCDFan

I like the geometric use of the prints. The length and styles are pretty young.

Hmmm, not feeling it. But then, this is for a younger age group that the one I currently inhabit.

I really like both “sides” of this collection a lot.  I like the way she married the two – very cool!

  • MilaXX

Can’t say I like this. The prints are nice, but the designs border on juniors to me.

  • understateddiva

I watched this on the live feed (thank you so much for telling us about that!!) and was a little underwhelmed, except for the jackets.  The motorcycle trench was really interesting, and the others I want.

  • blondie65

Well….I guess the 80′s are back…sans the big hair.  I do like the jacket in the 2nd to last row…3rd in.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I looooove this. Third row, second look. That’s for me. The pattern-mixing is impressively done. Not every piece is a winner but I’d love to wear these clothes.

  • Verascity

Eh. I can’t say I love it. Some of it feels dated to a few years ago,  I’m really sick of shirts like that first one in the top row, and while I get that there’s always going to be a certain amount of “get over it it’s art,” I’m also tired of clothes that will never look good on non-model bodies, which most of these are.

    Want the leather jackets.

  • fungstyle

i’m not sure i like that t lo sound like they’re playing this one a little safe. no real opinionating in the write up – mostly a creative description of a pretty dated and confusing looking collection, with no phrases that tip it positive or negative. tell us how you really feel t lo.

wait, are 80′s old lady prints coming back?? I should not have to live through that twice!

  • EEKstl

Wow, I really love this, esp. the floaty sleeveless tops with the skinny pants.  They’re calling my name!

  • PinkLemon

reeeeally hating the biker shorts/mullet shirt combo. gross.

  • Kate4queen

Beautiful but not for me, thank you. :)

  • marilyn

This all looks off the rack.  Are we going to see this at Old Navy?

  • mmc2315

    Aw, I’m disappointed!

I think this collection rocks.  It’s not my vibe, but it sure is pretty. And I love the rainbow hair. Unimaginably huge improvement over multicolored fright wigs.

  • Nonnah

    It looks a little “Junior”.

  • Blondage

    It’s very 80′s, yes?

  • oohsparkley!

I love the first dress and a few other pieces.  The biker shorts and leggings don’t belong on a runway.
