Natalie Portman in Christian Dior Couture

Posted on September 26, 2012

Natalie Portman kind of looks like those little figurines for each month of the year that you give little girls on their birthday.

Natalie Portman (pictured with her husband Benjamin Millepied) attends the opening night performance of the L.A. Dance Project in Los Angeles in a Christian Dior couture gown paired with Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry and a Richard Mille watch.

Christian Dior Fall 2012 Couture Collection/Model: Esther Heesch (NEXT)

If you pick her up by the head and shake her, a little bell rings.

It’s a stunning gown, and we’d be assholes if we tried to claim she doesn’t look beautiful, but doesn’t it look like, we don’t know … too much dress for her? We think we’d have liked it better if it was shaped more like the runway version, with the more defined waist and the tea-length hem.

Also, since we’re feeling nitpicky, was a big white watch really the kind of accessory called for here, Nats?

Maybe it’s the makeup, maybe the (colour of her) hair, maybe both, but somehow her face looks a bit scary to me…

    • piecesofconfetti

I think the hair color is making her look too generic. She doesn’t look like herself.

      • holzfaellen

That’s probably it. I think I’d be easily scared by a generic-looking Natalie Portman.

      • kolokOlchik

exactly!  i was thinking she’s looking like any other starlet.  This hair, while looking fine on her, is not doing anything for her beautiful face!

        • CozyCat

I think the problem is that her eyebrows and complexion are not those of a natural blonde.  So she ends up looking like all the other starlets who dye their hair blonde because in Hollywood that’s what you do.

      • BelladonnaRising

Right??? Natalie, go back and get some brown hair dye. Even the shaved head is better than this blond sh*t.

        • piecesofconfetti

Wow, you’re right! She looked more like herself bald than she does blonde.

    • Le_Sigh

That hair is so Not Good.  It’s kind of freaking me out.

    • girlthethird

Is it me or does she kind of look like Jessica Alba with that hair colour?

  • The longer length isn’t working at all.  Shame.

    • LuisaNL

completely agree, it makes her look stumpy. runway version is much prettier.

    • Perhaps this is the original runway dress and she’s just so tiny it goes down to the floor on her. 🙂 Unflattering, either way.

      • Sweetvegan

I thought the same thing. So many of these tiny celebs are wearing dresses that are too long for them.

  • ToothCake

Beautiful! Kind of looks like a wedding gown though?

    • bookish

    • Rebecca Hatcher

Totally – I had to do a double take to make sure these weren’t wedding pictures – especially that last one where they look like they might be dancing.

    • NC_Meg

That’s all I thought looking at the pictures, “What a nice wedding dress.”

  • lovelyivy

Are we not talking about the blonde? did everybody but me know that she’d gone blonde? And yes, this is too much dress for her- it’s beautiful, but maybe would have worked better at the original length. As is, it looks like she borrowed it from a taller friend.

    •  I did not know about the blonde. She didn’t ask me and I would have told her not to.

      • Lori

She said that it’s for a role.

        •  I’m sure it is. I do find it weird that casting directors would say “We want a pretty brunette to play a less pretty blonde” rather than casting a less pretty blonde or making the character a pretty brunette.

          • quiltrx

I think the only time there should be a hair-change is when it’s a book character that people have been picturing a certain way in their minds for years.

          • Judih1

            Well said

    • MilaXX

I don’t know for sure, but I’m assuming the hair change is for a movie role.

  • Lizzyisi

That dress is wearing her. I  think it looks terrible, especially at the floor, instead of at tea-length. Also, that blonde color does not suit her at all.

    • call_me_schmeg

my grandmother had this doll in her bathroom whose poufy skirt covered the extra roll of toilet paper in a special, fancy way. i wonder how much toilet paper natalie has under her skirt….

      • HazellC

If she’s wearing that terrible dress so she can smuggle home stolen rolls of toilet paper from the event’s venue, I may forgive her for it.

    • AudreysMom

She almost looks afraid to be wearing this dress. Her hands are held out like she’s afraid to touch the beading or something. I look at that picture with hubby and it’s like she’s saying to him, ‘not too tight, honey! This isn’t my dress. I have to return it just like they gave it to me.”

  • Hmmmmmm.   I can’t say I’m fully on board with the blonde locks either. Even though she doesn’t look bad that way exactly.  Its just seems off, somehow.   As for the hem length, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised that it IS a tea length sample, for a woman who is not a tiny, wee, minute of a thing. The watch?  Well, I’m pretty old school about them. I really dislike them, on principle, with evening wear.

    • schadenfreudelicious

You’re most certainly correct, that dress is likely a tea length sample on the model who is probabaly a foot taller than teeny Natalie..

      •  Its a shame, really, since she could wear the version shown on the model perfectly. Its a great look for her, in the right proportions.

        • schadenfreudelicious

totally agree, the more fitted bodice and tea length of the runway version would have been lovely on her..

    • Corsetmaker

Agree, it probably is the shorter sample. Removing the underskirt/crinoline underneath will have made it longer too.

    • MilaXX

It’s also accessorized wrong. I would liked to have seen something that brings out the purple and citrine jewels on the dress which would have done a lot to take it always from looking so bridal.

      •  True facts!   Considering that the dress is so simple in shape, even with the amount of decoration on it, she could have worn a big statement necklace that pulled up those colors.  I’m usually all about bringing the least dominant colors into the accessories.

      • Yup! It’s a completely beautiful dress but it does read almost Stepford-bridal in every pic; different earrings (some color please; jade?), lose the watch and I hate that clutch. @kiltdntiltd:disqus, I agree about the blonde and feel the same about it on Rachel McAdams – looks like a brunette trying to be the top “Heather” and they are both gorgeous: they don’t need the blonde!!! (I am not bagging on blondes, just saying be the best “you”)

        •  yessss about Rachel MacAdams going blonde too!

    • mellorcr

It’s also longer on her because she chose to wear it with a less puffy crinoline underneath.  Which was probably a good choice for her proportions, but with a stiff fabric like this dress that just makes an awkward pleat at the hem, as you can see in the top two pics.

    • j_anson

I was just saying that I don’t think she’s figured out how to dress herself as a blonde yet! This dress would have looked better, I think, on brunette Natalie than it does on blonde Natalie. I bet she CAN do blonde in the hands of the right stylist, but this isn’t cutting it.

And I bet you’re right about the hem length. She’s one of the few stars I’ve seen in person and she’s seriously, seriously tiny. The set dressing on Thor to make her look vaguely plausible next to Chris Hemsworth must have been hilarious.

  • Little_Olive

I don’t see it as too much dress in a style sense but in that she is so tiny it makes her look 12. It is a stunning dress. I wish the yellowish bottom showed more.

Her face of discomfort does not help – maybe it’s the blond hair?

  • Funkyjuicebox

I barely recognize her as a blonde. At any rate, this is a wedding dress that makes her look 2 feet tall.

  • And her hair?  No one has a comment about her dancing with the Sun-In demon?

  • Vaniljekjeks

She’s gorgeous.  She’d look gorgeous in anything, but it’s not her dress.  It’s also not her haircolor.

  • newleaf1

It’s such a pretty dress but she looks like the top of the Barbie birthday cake I had made for my little girls when they turned five.

  • Sobaika

The dress is all wrong (too bridal, too long, poor accessorizing) but she looks a lot better as a blonde than I would have imagined.

  • She looks like a Barbie cake. A GORGEOUS Barbie cake, but a barbie cake nonetheless:

  • I thought about the tea length too, but she’s not tall enough to pull it off so then she would just end up looking like she was in a cupcake costume. I like her hair a lighter brown.  “Pick her up and shake her and a little bell rings”…you guys slay me.

  • I don’t like the blonde and agree tea-length would have been better. Something about the proportions makes her look really long-bodied.

  • crash1212

As I was scrolling down, my thoughts were…I’m glad her version doesn’t have the defined waist and poofy-outy skirt and I like the length on hers better than the one on the model. To each his/her own, I suspect. Also, I love her hair with this – it looks “done” but not what might be expected with such a dress and I LOVE the white watch. Guess I’m the contrary bitter kitten this morning.

  • She needs better accessories, definitely. Also, the blond hair is not doing her any favors.

  • piecesofconfetti

This does not work for me. I think I hate the hair color (and it looks a little ratty/undone to be paired with a Dior gown).

  • lbl

It seems all the lady celebs have been drowning in their Dior gowns lately. It’s a shame because they’re beautiful dresses.

Also, she loses half her beauty as a blonde.

  • Kayceed

It looks like she is levitating.

  • VioletFem

That dress is pretty, but it is overwhelming her. Also, I hate her new hair color. Why are (nearly) all my favorite brunette actresses dying their hair blonde? Most of them look better as brunettes. I really hope she goes back to a more flattering color.

  • mjude

she does look like a fragile little bell.  i agree it should have been tea length.

  • eowyn_of_rohan

Oy vey, I hope that blonde is for a role.  Because it’s just not very good on her.

  • siriuslover

I like the tea-length too. I liked the long gown until I scrolled down and saw the runway version which is much prettier, I think.

  • DaveUWSNYC

I like the accessory she’s dancing with.

  • Michael Owens

Shorter or long, the dress is beautiful, and she and it make for a happy look. Her hair color is also quite nice. It really softens her look. The white watch? All wrong. Anything else, anything at all, would have been better.

Back to her diminutive size. Her hands are crazy tiny. If you notice them in “Closer” close-ups, as she’s pole dancing, they look like the hands of a toddler, which was a little disturbing.

    • Anathema_Device

She walked by us in LA once, and she is TINY. Everything about her is tiny. I thought she was a little kid who had cancer (her head was shaved for V for Vendetta) until my husband pointed out who it was. I whipped around in time to see her going into a store and, yep, he was right. I swear I could carry her around in a Baby Bjorn.

  • That shade of blond does nothing for her.

  • pattyw

Thanks guys. Now I’m getting all misty over the “January Angel” figurine I threw out years ago in a misguided fit of maturity.

  • VeryClaire

    No Natalie, not blond!!!!!

  • megohd

    What a pretty wedding gown!

Her new hair and the dress don’t agree. I also think it looks infinitely better as a shorter dress.

  • alyce1213

The length is wrong and it is too much dress.

  • Tatiana Luján

    She looks like a debutante.

  • Corsetmaker

She looks like a pretty but regular girl trying on wedding dresses in the shop.

  • MilaXX

When I saw that dress in a post a few days ago, I was hoping to see a celeb in it. Sadly Nat is not that celeb. Not only is she too short, she’s too petite. So yeah, too much dress for her.

    • Aarjullor

I loved this dress when I saw it on the runway. I’m sad she’s ruined it, made it look terrible. I doubt another starlet will wear it now, such a shame.

  • I assume that the length is different (AKA awkward) because she’s so much shorter than the model who was meant to wear the sample.  You’d think that Dior could at least commit to customizing a few things when they hired a 5’2 actress as the face of their brand…

  • Laylalola

It is literally too much dress for her — she’s a foot too short for it (see where it falls on the model).

  • tallgirl1204

I like the runway version better, also.  I think she put it on and thought “it makes my hips look big” and had it cut down.  But if you’re going to wear a poofy-skirted dress, you’ve got to celebrate your tiny waist and petite everything-else, not wreck the line of the dress in order to say “Look, world, I’m teacup-sized!”

  • Ozski

It IS a gorgeous dress but now I can’t get “Bippity Boppity Boo” out of  my head for some reason…

  • Wellworn

95% of Hollywood blondes are brunette dye jobs, and half of them have similar coloring to Natalie.  She is just one of many, but I think people don’t like it because they are so used to seeing her with brown hair.  If she had started in utero, it would be more acceptable to y’all.

  • janetjb

I don’t like the proportions on her.  The runway version is much prettier.

  • l_c_ann

She wasn’t born to be a blond and that, combined with her very high forehead, makes wearing that white of a dress less impressive than it might be.

The proportions are not right.  (I expect Tim Gunn could take one of those pictures and grease pencil the dress into a beauty of size and proportion.)

  • Monkey Toe

If she wore it tea-length you guys would’ve bitched about her vegan shoes.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Wow–blonde is really not that girl’s color.  It doesn’t do anything for her, does it?

    Oh, right, the dress.  Eh.

  • Judy_S

I think she looks lovely. The problem is when you go (who was it in the Emmys who did this?) from dainty birthstone-bell to full-blown birthday cake.

  • She looks cute, but the blond hair makes her look a lot like Jessica Alba as Sue Storm.

  • Beardslee

Tea length and no blonde hair.

  • fiestyfashionfem

“If you pick her up and shake her, a little bell rings” – I swear, TLo, you guys KILL ME!  I love you both so.  Absolutely PERFECT description of her look.  Sweet lil’ thing with her ballet boy.

  • julnyes

With darker hair and a shorter hemline I would be in love with this look.

  • Eolie

Ha ha ha, hilarious: “If you pick her up by the head and shake her, a little bell rings.” Exactly! You guys always find the best and funniest analogies. She is a lovely girl, but this is most definitely not her best look all-around. The hair color is too blah for her skin tone, doesn’t it. Even her pretty dark brown eyes are not enough contrast to make it work.

  • Her head shape always reminds me of Kerry Washington.  Like if Kerry’s lips were smaller or Nat’s bigger, they could easily play half sisters.

  • I think dropping it down to the floor was what took it away from looking too doll like. I like it – alot – but I hate the watch also and the droopy hair. I also like her man-accessory. Cuuuuute!

  • sk8tfan

what is it with dying hair to be matchy matchy to the dress these days? I never liked the trend when it involved shoes; it’s hideous now. The color does nothing for her and just looks beige. Blecherous. Nice dress though-better on someone else. Someone not ashamed to be a beautiful brunette.

  • Washed out. No bueno.

  • Making it long took the focus away from the main point of interest, the bottom colors/crystals.

  • Right, right, and right: less length, more waist, lose the watch.  Maybe fuss with the hair a tad more, too.  The dress is knockout gorgeous!!

  • Anathema_Device

It strikes me as so ordinary, which sounds like an awful thing to say about a sparkly Dior gown. It is too much dress on her, as you point out. Why didn’t she wear it shorter? I know she is a little pixie of a thing, so maybe this is how the original length fits her? Shoulda hemmed it.

Don’t like the blonde hair, either. Makes her really ordinary looking. I hope it is just for a role.

  • m0r0

It looks like they put the same dress the model wore on the runway on a girl 12 inches shorter. It appears to be designed for the hem to hit lower/mid calf and it’s floor length on Natalie. Now that I have seen the runway photo I understand why it bugged me when I first saw it. Thanks TLo

  • bitchybitchybitchy

It is a stunning gown, but it does look like a lot of dress for a petite woman such as Natalie.

  • Was she always blond? No. Those watches are ugly. And I had that figurine – I think it had angel wings.

  • unbornfawn

The dress is Ok. The watch is all wrong. I don’t like the blonde hair, it washes her out. I think if her hair was her natural color this dress would look better.

  • fringebenefit

She was beautiful as a brunette–washed out and plain as a blonde. Amazing what hair color can do.

  • That photographer and his f***ing distortion lens. Unless Millepied’s head is TWICE the size of hers (top photo).

  • msdamselfly

agree with you about the length–makes her look to tiny

  • AnnPopovic

Pick her up by the head…bell rings…that’s it. I am never going to be able to look at her without thinking of that and bursting into hysterical giggles. Oh, no! Good thing I don’t travel in these circles!

  • GorgeousThings

This should be titled, “Girl, that is NOT your haircolor”
Yikes – that blonde washes her out and makes her look exhausted. She should shoot whomever talked her into it.

  • Zippypie

I don’t like this.  It washes her out and the length is too much.  She’s tiny and it makes her look silly.  The original dress is much more interesting.

I hate the blond hair.  Hope she’s doing it for a role.

  • PeaceBang

What’s with the Shiksa Goddess routine, Miss Portman?

  • another_laura

As many have said, tea length this dress is interesting, but floor length it looks off.  Buy the dress, get it fitted and adjusted for your tiny self!

I envy her the ballet dancer hubby.

  • BrooklynBomber

She really needs to back to brunette. The blonde isn’t doing her any favors.

She is just WAY to short to pull off this dress.  And her hair is tragic.  If she had slicked it back in a bun or something it might not have looked so badly processed.  I do hope it is a look for a role and not a “choice”! 🙂
This dress was stunning in the W editorial.  Not so much here.

  • littlemac8

NO FEET!  She’s so tiny that without feet she looks like a cake decoration!

  • nancylee61

I don’t like the hair, that is first. The gown and her pose reminds me of when Kathy Griffin judged the little girl beauty contest and the girls taught her how to twirl like a cupcake. Natalie is doing The Cupcake.

And I was thinking that maybe she is wearing the tea length gown, but she is so short, what is tea length on a model is long on her?

    • galcurly

Agreed.  The hair is just awful.  The color, the length and the styling.  I don’t know why everyone insists on going blonde at some point when it doesn’t always work.

  • Judy_J

I like the runway version much better.  She would have done well to stick with that version instead of the more A-line, floor length model.

  • Yup–too long, though she’s still lovely–and seriously, Nats. Blonde hair? Girl, that is not your hair color.

  • It’s pretty, but I definitely preferred the runway version.

  • j_anson

Maybe it’s the angle, or the cut of the dress, I’m not sure – but it’s making her body look too small for her head and arms.

Aside from that I think this dress would have worked better for her if she was still a brunette, to give it some contrast. I bet she hasn’t quite figured out how to dress herself as a blonde.

  • glennethph

I agree — it’s a little too much for her (and a little too twee).

  • CatherineRhodes

After seeing the runway version, then glancing back at Natalie, it appears she was cut off at the shins. Bad idea.

  • Looks like something on top of a somewhat tasteful quinceañera cake

    • Complete with the fake blond hair! I’m Mexican so I can say that. 🙂

  • quiltrx

I REALLY love the runway version…I am all about tea-length.  It loses something when it’s lengthened.
And I hope the hair is just for a role.  A big part of her beauty for me is how her natural hair sets off her pretty skin.

  • LinXGUA

    I wrote a mean thing, but … i can’t.
    I adore her.

  • I don’t think blonde is working for her.

  • Dear Hollywood:  Must everyone be blonde?

    The last brunette

  • turtleemily

She looks like she fell down a wedding cake.

  • Girl, that’s not your hair color…

  • Put a halo on her head & she’d look like a porcelain angel Xmas ornament of mine.  And yes, it rings like a bell.

  • berkeleygirl

It’s not the gown, it’s the hair.  Unless it’s for a role, she should not go blonde. Also, the hair looks wilted. From the neck down, flawless.

  • MarinaCat

From the Rachel McAdams hair color line of “I was so much more striking as a brunette.”

    • I really could not love you more right now – that’s hilarious!

  • bellafigura1

Totally, the runway dress is gorgeous, nipped in and belled out and tea length — she dumbed it down.  Also, she always looks oddly wide-eyed to me and stiff.  I just don’t get all the panting after her.

    • snarkykitten

       this. all of this

  • snarkykitten

wow I hope that blonde look is because of Thor because it is not her color.

    and that make up is…yikes.

naw, not feeling this one. Darken the hair, fix the make up, and make the dress more like the runway version. But I still think it’s too much dress for her.

  • Trisha26

Totally agree on every point, TLo! And then there’s the fact that it’s Natalie Portman.

  • It’s so disappointing to see her fall into that tired old starlet “orange fake tan, bleached hair” look.  She’s just so uniquely beautiful, and this just makes her lean towards Britney.  As for the dress, she looks like a Christmas tree topper angel.  Not good.

    • bellafigura1

The hair is for a role.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

much better shaped like the runway version. almost generic the way she had it remade.
hair is better dark too. suddenly she seems to resemble sarah jessica parker [if but a bit]. i can only hope this is for a character.

  • ThaliaMenninger

This reminds me of the things grannies used to knit to hide the toiler paper roll.  TP Princesses. And when did she go blonde? It washes her out.

  • Judih1

You weren’t being nit picky – that watch was totally wrong for this look. Any watch, but especially that one. And yes the runway version would have looked better on her petite frame.

Do NOT like her with blonde hair. EECH

  • OMG, my stepsisters had those dolls. I love you guys for that reference.

  • lrhoff

Yes, she should have gone tea length, because she looks like a mushroom cap cream puff with the hem that long.  And the watch….seriously?  What is it, a Swatch?!  Tacky and offensive with that dress.

  • Girl, that is not your hair color.

  • Going blonde has made her look so ordinary

  • Rrroza

Looking forward to when she resumes being brunette.

Shame about the length of it on her. As well as overwhelming her, the floor-length means you can’t really see the hem with its spectacular beading and that magical  juxtaposition of chartreusey green and lavender. It doesn’t have the same impact. (Which can also be said about her hair.)

  • lilazander

She looks like Kate Winslet. Tat is precisely the person I see the dress on. I don’t recognise Portman…. What??

  • alwaysanswerb

  • PhillipWilde

This dress reminds me of those sugar cookies with the multi-colored sprinkles you get at the shopping mall.  That being said, I agree with everything y’all said.

  • ccm800

I think they put that cocktail length on her entirely unaltered and she is just 4 feet tall.  Bell line – CRACKED UP!

  • Hai Yen Nguyen

It’s shocking to me how much less attractive she looks with blonde hair.
