Michelle Trachtenberg in Notte by Marchesa

Posted on September 26, 2012

We’re feeling prickly and nit-picky today. We’re just warning you now.

Hey! Let’s play a game. We’ll call it “What are those prickly pricks bitching about NOW?” See if you can spot the one thing in the following pictures that we think is a mistake. Ready?

Michelle Trachtenberg attends the 2012 Metropolitan Opera Season Opening Night of L’Elisir D’Amore in New York City in a Notte by Marchesa gown paired with a Marchesa clutch.

Marchesa Fall 2012 Clutch

It’s that lady in the straw hat behind her. God, she bugs.

Oh, we’re kidding. It’s the necklace. It’s a really beautiful gown (although we just want to go up and yank on the bust until it’s straight, which is why it’s never a good idea to invite us to a red carpet, because we’re likely to get arrested) and the color looks amazing on her. Blue-eyed gals can never go wrong in a brilliant blue, after all. But that thing around her neck is way too heavy for the look. Then again, we’re not sure why we’re singling it out, since she’s got some pretty hefty arm jewelry going on too. And the bag’s not exactly minimalist. Maybe that’s our issue; that all of her accessories are so alike. We think the clutch is beautiful and looks great with the dress, but that should have been as far as the blingy stuff went. Something more delicate around her wrist and nothing at all on the neck would have bumped this up to a WERQ.

My first thought?  The damned necklace. Its too big and long. It should never disappear below the neckline of the dress, whatever dress is being worn.  And yeah, straw hat lady does bug.  lol Oh, and btw, this is one of the few times I have not thought a Marchesa dress to be over-designed.

      • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow aka Darth Mommy

I agree about the necklace and she’s wearing 2 bracelets.  Had she taken one off along with the necklace and we’d be singing Hosannas..

      • piecesofconfetti

“…this is one of the few times I have not thought a Marchesa dress to be over-designed.”

You’re right! I didn’t even realize this was a Marchesa. Shame about the necklace, though.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Of course you didn’t.  For once, someone wearing her work doesn’t look as though they’re being smothered in a pile of rumpled laundry.

      • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

I said the same thing about the necklace, if it were just a skosh shorter I wouldn’t have found it so irritating.

      • mjude

i think it looks like wilma flintstone jewelry.  as for the straw hat lady…LOL

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

A necklace of that sort, requires either a dress of utter simplicity of cut and color, or a complete and wholehearted commitment to going over the top, down into the valley beyond, and up the other side.

        • dress_up_doll

Wilma never would have worn that. She was a classy lady and only rocked pearls. Real pearls.

          • mjude

dont you remember the rock diamond bracelet? :)

            • dress_up_doll

My bad. I forgot about that episode. That Fred really knew how to treat a lady! I think there may have been an epi about a diamond engagement ring as well.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

The necklace, definitely. With that bodice she really didn’t need anything around her neck.  I agree, for a change Marchesa didn’t overdo the design.

      • theblondette

My very first thought was “wow, a non-shitty Marchesa dress!” The blue is lovely.

    • Sobaika

Yes, way too heavy for this look. It hangs too low and competes with the bust, which is where all the visual interest is.

    • http://twitter.com/younglibrarian Katie Dunneback

Wheee!! I got it right! I think the reason why the necklace bugs me is that it goes below the neckline. As for the bracelet, I thought about it, but it provides a bit of balance for the clutch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Woo hoo! I got it right!  That necklace is all sorts of wrong, not just because it is too much, but it is also too long. A small bling earring and no necklace would have been perfect. Her hair is also looking severe.

    • crash1212

Wow. I’ve been reading you long enough that I nailed the ‘issues’ right off. Of course, being blinded by the gigantic bling was a dead giveaway.

    • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

      The color is stunning.

I do wish she’d chosen just a SLIGHTLY smaller necklace, one that didn’t dip under her neckline.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Ok, first of all, I won that little contest. I knew it was the necklace.  It’s because it is so low it is obscured by the poorly made and overwhleming bust on that dress. Second, that is the exact dress my sister wore to her Junior Prom in 1982 except it was purple.

      • Anathema_Device

heh…see my post a few seconds after yours. I didn’t buzz in fast enough!

        • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Too funny. I think I yelled out loud too. But don’t tell anyone.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

We won’t any of us breathe a word.

    • janetjb

The accessories are too heavy.  Choose one and ditch the rest.

      • kimmeister

Yes – my initial thought is that the necklace/bracelets/clutch were all too ornate and too similar.  They’re competiting with the detail in the bust.

    • nannypoo

That necklace is not only too heavy and too long, it’s also ugly. I can’t imagine an occasion where this necklace would be the right choice.

    • gabbilevy

I always get a little tingle of pride whenever I guess correctly what you guys are going to criticize. Yup, the necklace!

    • piecesofconfetti

Agreed on all accounts. I do love the clutch, though.

    • Joe J

My first thought was “I see dead people”. She looks positively ghostly.  Although the color of the dress is fab with her eyes.

    • BeeBeauNYC

I guessed the necklace and was right! Yay!

    • Anathema_Device

When you asked us to guess what bugged you, I scrolled to the first pic and actually yelled out, “NECKLACEWONKYBODICE!!!” as though I were on some kind of game show and had to buzz in first. Christ, I need to get a life.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

But, Darling girl, you HAVE a life.  Its here, with all of us.

        • Anathema_Device

haha, yes. Thank you. Actually, this is a wonderful respite from the demands of real life.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

            Don’t it just?!!!

    • Aarjullor

That damn huge ass necklace and bracelet, yuck! But WOW! A Marchesa I don’t hate! The color on her is beautiful.

    • JMB_edits

Whew, I passed the quiz.  I can stay in TLO University! :)  I’m so proud of me! :)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AYQCICXEN2CCDBFV5HED4Z2RUA Dee B

She doesn’t have on any earrings.  I’m thinking switch the necklace out for banging earrings, turn the bracelets in for something more delicate and she’s got a WERQ

    • Tatiana Luján

the fit of the bust bothers me.

    • kaycem

lol my guesses were the necklace or the pinhead hair — glad i was kinda right!

    • pattyw

I work at home and spend a good chunk of time in my pajamas in front of a computer. And yet even I know that necklace is all kinds of wrong and that matchy-matchy accessories are a major no-no. What is up with these celebrities and their stylists? Give me their clothing budgets/free stuff and I promise I’ll get it right!

    • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

Another super nitpicky thing? There’s a strand not caught in her ponytail. It’s driving me insane. Seriously it’s a PONYTAIL. it’s not that hard to get your long hair into the thing.

    • MilaXX

I guess I get a half point. I chose necklace and eyeliner. I agree she could have  left off the bracelets as well, but overall I think everything but the bag is too heavy. The smokey eye should be lighter. The necklace is too clunky and the bracelets are too much.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

That eyeliner is part of the fall make-up trend, so we’re going to be seeing lots of ladystars with dramatic (read heavy, overdone) eyeliner and shadow in the coming months.

    • NCDFan

I actually thought the necklace was waaaay too much, with the bracelet a close second. This is a gorgeous gown, not over designed and with a flattering silhouette but that jewelry is like the play jewelry sold in the toy department.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/2LIE6ISFQUBIAO7OB6U5TAVXXQ Depot'er

I would have guessed the raccoon like eye makeup… or that she has to losen the belt to breathe…

    • scrappy1

The necklace is awful, agreed, but was anyone else also distracted by that horrible black nail polish?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=639062430 Sara Padilla

I was wrong.  I thought you issue was going to be how the pleating makes her look like she’s had a monolateral mastectomy.

    • Judy_S

Yes! I get an A on the exam. Actually I thought that, given the opera-opening-night or whatever, a smaller necklace would be OK. But that big thing is an invitation not just to yank at her  bust but to peek down inside to see the rest of the sparklies.

    • jmorino08

Nailed it! My guess was “necklace is too much and all the jewelry is too matchy!” I get an A+ in Bitter Kitten class today!

    • afabulous50

I’m surprised she can remain upright with that anchor around her neck!

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Wow, has opera gotten that trendy?  There’s an opening night red carpet?  Will wonders never cease.  “L’Elisir” is not exactly standard fare, too, although it *is* a comedy.

Anyway, of course it’s the saggy necklace and I’d take away one of the bracelets, too.  Love the clutch.  I also love her hair and makeup.  Accessories!  It seems like they should be easy, but it’s amazing how often they trip up a celeb’s look (either too many or too few).

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

It doesn’t work because the necklace is hidden by the dress. It could have worked if it were a choker length.

    • RoxieRider

I kinda like it. It makes her look young. Or wait, is she not that young? I just made my way through Buffy again and still think of her as a teenager. But that was an era ago or so, wasn’t it? In any case, she looks absolutely beautiful, necklace misstep or no.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

YAY! I got it right!  First thing I said was “God I hope it’s that necklace or I’m going to have to suggest the boys see a good eye doctor!”  Not only is it too heavy, but it lays all wrong for that neckline – I hate when the bottom of a necklace plays hide and seek behind the top of a dress.

    • Maine1ac

I also called the necklace right away.  I just want to say I never could have done that before I became a bitter kitten.

    • Scoobydrew

the necklace? I thought it was Michelle T … I know it’s wrong, but my hatred of Dawn  from Buffy just carries over. It’s not fair, but when I see her I think  “DAWN! UGH!”

    • http://twitter.com/Elizabethann1 Elizabeth Denton

Maybe I’m an accessories whore, but 90 percent of red carpet dresses I think “she really could use a statement necklace.” I always think they look naked! Unless there are big earrings or something. I saw, pile it on. ;)

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I went with matchy accessories, stark – practically workout – ponytail, melting hem, and non-lip color (though that might have been mitigated if her hair were zhuzhed more since she’s got the dramatic eye makeup already).

    • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

See, I would’ve kept the accessories and ditched the gown.

    • AnnPopovic

I don’t think it’s a necklace. It’s a cleverly disguised makeup bag. See? Mirror, lip balm, and a little pick-me-up all stored in cute little crystal compartments…hit the back and you can dial home or start your car engine…

    • Zippypie

My gut reaction was – EVERYTHING!   The bodice is huge and looks askew (from the side, it looks like blue lettuce leaves devouring her bosum), the length is too damn long and that necklace is ridiculous.  Oh, yes, and the two clunky bracelets.  It all looks like Forever 21 costume jewelry.  The only things I like are the color of the dress and the bag.

    • PeaceBang

      yep. 100% yep.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jill-Tracy/100001557759289 Jill Tracy

I said the necklace….I feel so proud to have figured it out. Or maybe I just read your blog way too much?!

    • another_laura

I don’t think it’s nitpicky to get all unhappy about that necklace!  Gaaaah!  It’s horrid.  How would you walk out of your lavish hotel room into your limo knowing that your gaudy necklace is falling below the neck of your lavish gown?  And hey, even before that, how would you even put that monstrosity on with that ruffled neckline?  Honey, you ain’t Liz Taylor, you can’t pull that off….

    • Bree The Vole

I only like the clutch and the color of the gown, but holy hell she’s so pretty. I’d love some tips from her how to keep your pale skin so crystal clear.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

See, I would have said the dragging hemline (ENOUGH with that already!), the scraped back hair, the too-pale face and the wonky top on the dress. And THEN the necklace and jewelry.

    • allj

She also needs some lip color. It’s driving me crazy.

    • Judy_J

I KNEW it was the necklace!  That’s the first thing that jumped out at me when I saw her photo.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I love love love the dress and the clutch, and the bangles don’t bother me at all. I like the necklace, but I think it belongs with something where the bodice wasn’t so elaborate. It’s the one piece that Coco would have told her to take off.

    • j_anson

The necklace is what stands out because it’s too long for the dress – your necklace shouldn’t hit right at the top of your neckline. It should either drape above it or dangle below it.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

The necklace is bad, but I don’t like the lip color, either.

    • fashionablylate

Oh yeah, ditch the necklace and take the bracelet down a notch and this would be perfection. Love the dress and clutch, her skin is flawless, she has the face to pull off the hair and her eye makeup is fabulous.

    • CheriCPat

and a hem.  Don’t forget the dress needs to be hemmed before it can be a WERQ.

    • quiltrx

This one was easier than some, uncles!  A humongo necklace that actually disappears into your bodice is pretty easy to pick out as wrong, especiallly for experienced Bitter Kittens.

I am not a fan of the harsh makeup (and sometimes harsh hair) she seems to favor on the RC.  I think she’s so much prettier when it’s softer.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1594250515 Kim Brightman

The necklace is fighting with the bodice for attention.  The bodice doesn’t need any help and the rest of the jewelry is enough.

    • luciaphile

I agree about the necklace but the hair is kind of severe. Also (and this is not something she could control) it seems to be blending in with the background….

    • turtleemily

I thought, “Jewelry’s too heavy, hair’s too tight, eye makeup is too raccoon-y, and the lip isn’t strong enough.” I guess I’m nitpickier today.

    • ojosazules

When you have skin like the holy milk of Krishna’s favorite cow, don’t go hanging a bunch of huge crap all over it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I was right! Ooooo, I’m preening now. Watch out!

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

Honestly, I love the jewelry. I love that someone on the RC isn’t afraid of jewelry. It doesn’t bite, y’know.

But she’s standing in a puddle of hem.

    • http://www.facebook.com/ann.verwiebe Ann VerWiebe

It really is too long. And, I’ll bet you she got the necklace before the dress.

    • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

Gorgeous color, and she looks beautiful.  But the necklace is way too much for that bodice, I agree.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

for once i guessed right. i think thats cos i have no idea, myself, why anyone at all would think a necklace that heavy which also interferes w/ the dress’ neckline would be a good idea. plus there are just way too many heavy faux rocks. pocketbook’s enough, the rest of the stuff would look better played down.

    • snarkykitten

mm you’re less prickly than me. I think her eye makeup is too heavy, the lip’s too light, the necklace is too much, & I’m not sold on the bodice.

but I like her nail polish…?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Louise-Bryan/1177213326 Louise Bryan

I was sort of wondering if it was the necklace or the droopy bustline, or if the necklace was pushing the top of the dress out of kilter.  Oh well, whatever.

    • TieDye64

This chick always overdoes it. Always! Bah.

    • http://twitter.com/meredeth_gwyn Meri

Why is opera fashion is always a little bit rich New York socialite tacky?
