Michael Kors Spring 2013 Collection

Posted on September 14, 2012

Crisp and color-blocked, with stripes as the central motif running throughout, the Michael Kors Spring 2012 collection is a brightly colored return to the preppy minimalism he’s played around with before. Taking his reference points from Op-Art and ’60s couture, he’s offered up an array of highly wearable, yet impeccably rendered sportswear in the Kors tradition. You ladies should feel free to do your mental shopping right now if you’re so inclined. We’re going to sit here and paw at the menswear, whining like hungry dogs. We’re already arguing over the vertical striped and the red-and-blue color-blocked blazers.

This is up there among my favorite collections I’ve ever seen.  These are impeccable.  I don’t even mind the matchy-matchy shoes on every model. Beautiful.

    • e m

I didn’t even realize the matchy shoes, because I was sucked into fantasies of wearing the clothes 😛 but some of the shoes are gorgeous, the black and white sandals worn with the vertical striped blazer+shorts suit for example. And the fashion…how impeccable is the cloud print dress?

  • Girl, listen. I don’t need to go into details. My coworker just asked me if I was having a fashion-gasm.

Can I just have it ALL?

    MK = Madison Ave. KING.

  • I love that there are male versions of female looks or vice versa.

  • I love the white coat in the first full row. Yes, please!

    •  That one stood out for me, too. Gorgeous.

    • twocee

Oh yeah.  I would consider paying a couple of months salary for that.  Even if I know white is impractical as hell.

      •  Oh, the impracticality of it is nothing. It’s just too gorgeous to NOT wear.

    • IAmJ

YES! The white coat is glorious.

  • Spicytomato1

Love the sporty stylishness of the collection. A couple pairs of pants jumped out at me:

Black with yellow stripes at the bottom: Sharp and wearable.
Cloud-print (worn with green sweater): Crazy and unflattering.

  • tonibaloney

LOVE this. I am a sucker for stripes, coats, and a touch of mod, so I’ll take one of everything, please!

  • gabbilevy

Ooooooh. I’ve really loved the few pieces of MK I’ve been able to get my hands on, and some of these are TO DIE.

  • Love the colors, and I want all the dresss. ALL. Except that ridiculous ones with the clouds on it…where’d that come from?

  • Spook E

it’s too glamorous. i hate it

  • kckris

Why isn’t Michael Kors designing the clothing for the Olympics?  Wouldn’t these looks be fabulous entering an Olympic Stadium with the Duchess pouring over every detail???  just sayin..

  • l_c_ann

    Dalek dresses!   and they’re cute.

  • Love that kelly green is back for another spring season 🙂 Drooling over Row 2, Look 2.

  • VicksieDo

Wow, those last three dresses almost make me want to hit the gym and wear them!  Gorge.

  • granddelusion

With all of those cutouts, I have to question his taste level.

  • Judy_J

I literally gasped when I saw that pantset made from the fabric that looks like water reflecting in a swimming pool.  Gorgeous!  I love the colorblocked dresses.  Duchess, you’ve done it again!

  • Carla_Charlton

When I first glanced at the initial photo, I thought it was of two men!  And some of these clothes look like Michael has been copying PR contestants — like the navy dress with the green and white stripe panels.

  • Vickiefantastico

It’s okay. I just feel like I’ve seen it all before. And the colors are very Tommy Hilfiger, no?

Sorry, Duchess, it’s not quite my thing.

  • charlotte

Serving some outer space fabulousness! And yet the item I want is the classy red coat.

  • janetjb

To quote Heidi, “I would wear that”.

  • yeah perfect, the three top models at the end, just peeerfect!!!

  • EEKstl

Want the large marjority of these, including the men’s color blocked coats…for ME.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I don’t see too much that would actually suit me, but I will take the vertical-stripe ladies’ blazer (aw hell, the whole suit, why not?) and the  paneled multi-stripe skirt.

I’d also like a closer investigation of the skirt in the center of the second-to-last row.

  • Some of the stripe combos are threatening to give me a migraine… and is it me, or does the green and black dress (second row middle) look like Ven’s favorite pleating technique (minus the alien-birth rosette, of course, because that would be tacky)?

I’d cut a bitch for the red trench.

  • If I was thin and rich, I’d buy it all.

  • The houndstooth-ish jackets and the black and white striped dress!  Oh, my!

  • ojosazules

It seems too literal an interpretation of its inspiration. The sharpest pieces could have come directly out of a sixties fashion spread.

  • BeeBeauNYC

Love it – it’s beautiful, but horizontal stripes are not my friend.

  • BrooklynBomber

Of course I like the Marlo Thomas-y pieces, and would like to wear some of it, but his stuff never fits me.

  • BrooklynBomber

Oh, also, a warning to men everywhere:

Please stay away from that green and blue shirt. It’s just a big color blocked error message.

    • I think Garth Brooks had that shirt about ten years ago.

      • BrooklynBomber

It gets worse: I think my dad had it 40 years ago!

        • Ahhhhhhhhh! Next thing I know you will tell me that someone carved that shirt in hieroglyphics on one of the pyramids! 🙂

          • BrooklynBomber

            How did you know?

  • Bravo!!  I’ll take that red coat in the fourth row.

  • Snailstsichr

That red, black and white dress made me gasp – now that’s color blocking! I’d like that and the red coat. And, if I were tall, the green and black dress three rows down from the coat.

  • mjude

he really does know what he is doing

  • aristida_girl

Love the Duchess! His clothing is a hit for me every time… I really like the could-print and the pool print, and of course the more traditional items work for me too…basically, I’ll take one of everything 🙂

  • IAmJ

Lots of crisp, beautiful tailoring here. I unabashedly love most of the looks. Great collection!

  • MilaXX

Ooh I like! Okay so mental shopping: I like the blue and white men’s coat, the blue/green/white dress, the blue/green dress, that black(navy)/white dress and the yellow bag with the metal sides. Now if only I actually had the funds to buy.

  • frannyprof

MK got his mojo back! Love all of it, even the vagina curtain skirt.

  • noi thannao

Raf simmon’s/ Jil Sander recreated into an All-American look?

  • Shoes and purses, please! Esp the red shoes with the lucite heels and the gold heels – awesome!

  • marilyn

Boring.  Unoriginal, except for the two-toned jackets that make the guys appear to be wearing skirts.

  • Alisa Rivera

Cathy Horyn from the NY Times gave this a big thumbs down but I like it. Very sharp.

  • drdirection

Damn!  there is something I want in every row.  I never say that about Kors

  • mmc2315

The collection is not to my taste, but when I saw it, I thought it would appeal to plenty.

  • Tatiana Luján

Most of these pieces won’t ever go out of fashion.

  • Except for the black dresses at the bottom, these are all really cool. I may have to hunt down a skirt or two from this collection…

  • RroseSelavy

Color! B&W! Graphics! It’s all there. I love it. And I have just said that Michael Kors “is not all that great.” There are a few goofy looks here, but I have to lash myself with a wet noodle for what I have done.

  • LordZoe

i’m (not) sorry but who wants red stripes coming from their crotch on their pants?  also, the first pic looks like the girl is packing under that skirt. wow.

(btw I’m 100% sure its the styling not the girl’s body there, to be clear)

  • j_anson

What, WHAT, with that unzipped skirt. I actually really like a lot of this – Kors always makes chic, wearable stuff. But that unzipped skirt, what, no.

  • SpcilK

I love this so hard and so much! I must have that white coat in my life.

  • TropiCarla

Good heavens! I can’t believe how badly I DESIRE the red/white/black dress and the yellow one with zipper details. Kors knows his market and nails it every time.

  • kschwarting

I’m not a huge Kors fan, but the shift on the left in the second row is MINE, minus the bizarre red sunnies.  And if that toggled coat comes in a color other than bright yellow (which looks awful next to my face), I’ll take that too, please.

  • jmorino08

Don’t really care for the cut outs on the gowns, but the color blocking is fabulous! I would like everything with either red or green in it please.

  • AuntieAnonny

I can’t handle how flawless and impeccable this collection is. Absolutely perfect.

Now, if only I could afford it..

  • TomBord

The more things change, the more they remain the (yaaaaaaawn!) same.

  • PinkLemon

     must..have…color blocked…pants!!!

  • PrunellaV

The essence of Great American Designer.

  • Sorry daddies but that b & w striped blazer screams “REFEREE!”.

  • PaperPusher2

OMG.  I’m having a stripesgasm.  I. WANT. IT. ALL.

  • bitterk

    d i v i n e

the white coat in especially heavenly

  • It’s like he somehow gets inside my head and creates a collection full of things I currently am lusting after. The kelly green, the navy, the structured dresses, the long vertical stripes, the cut outs, all in my wheelhouse 🙂 Such a great collection!

  • Overal, I do like it.. but with those belts, all I can see is “Oakley”

  • Zippypie

Some of these are fab but others are just insane (I’m talking to you, hideous black & white rags!) (Except for the b&w striped men’s jacket – that’s sharp).

  • libraangel

Nice, but some maybe TOO minimalist???!!

  • guest2visits

I favor this kind of classic American style of design. Clean, simple.  I like the coats, the green with navy, the white dresses.

  • Love the black and white strip blazer despite it being a bit Beetlejuice, not that it would be bad thing.

    • Iroqhard

Not bad at all. It actually makes me like it more, actually.

  • quiltrx

Love this!  Kors often has a ‘rich bitch’ look that I don’t respond to, but this is fun and fresh.  Great colors and great shapes.

  • I must have the pants with color bands below the waist!

  • DesertDweller79

This is one of my favorite Kors collections in a long while.  I love what he did with the color blocking.  I love a lot of the shapes and colors.  Really well done!  Hope to see some great affordale options trickle down.

  • rorschach1992

Those last two gowns are quite great.

I want that black and white stripe blazer and the green/black shirt the first guy is wearing. Hoping that green’black piece won’t cost too pretty a penny, I really want that.

  • CMS

Thank god I don’t like yellow on my, because otherwise I’d need ALL THE CLOTHES!

  • I really do love all of these, but I have to say….  GIVE THE RED COAT TO MEEEEEE!!!!!  NOOOOWWWW!!!  (*Makes desperate, scary clutchy fingers*)

  • understateddiva

I need some cloud pants!  Unfortunately I couldn’t get Michael Kors if I was….well, Nicki knows the rest.

  • CPK1

I.ll take one of everything except the weird shiny tie-die fabric. But on the whole masterful american sportswear with a totally modern edge.

  • Lexie Guccione

Blue and red blazer for Tom, striped blazer for Lorenzo, and the rest of it for me!!!

  • Spook E

    snotty clothes

  • Iroqhard

THAT WHITE COAT IS MINE. Of course, I would wear it for 5 seconds then immediately spill something on it. But in my imaginary internet life- MINE!!!!

  • The red coat is TO DIE. I adore its perfection and absolute simplicity.

  • Beautifully tailored garments, nice use of linearity, very salient proportions. Love everything, save for the pocketed boobs (8th row look #1 left-to-right) and perhaps the green sequined mini-skirt (7th row look #2). Some designs are stand-outs: i.e. 10th row look # 3 left-to-right (talk about HANGER APPEAL!). A great collection.

  • LinXGUA

Somewhere between the green and the red, it felt like christmas.
Grass shirt and sky pants are a no-no. And the first look, of the first column? Please, no.
There are stunning looks, nonetheless. Really beautiful.
