Maggie Gyllenhaal in Rue Du Mail

Posted on September 27, 2012

Hey, remember the other day, when we did a Pairs Division post co-starring Maggie, and we scored her pretty high? Remember how a bunch of the kittens were all, “T Lo, you scored her kind of high. What’s up with that?” It’s very simple, darlings. You see, knowing how Maggie is likely to dress and knowing the kinds of looks she tends to reach for, we scored her high because …

Maggie Gyllenhaal makes an appearance on the ‘Today Show’ in New York City to promote her new film ‘Won’t Back Down’ in a Rue Du Mail dress.

Rue Du Mail Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Hanne Gaby Odiele (ELITE)

NOW do you understand? It’s all about the positive reinforcement.

She looks like a cartoon character who’s just been hit over the head with a huge mallet. We can’t help but hear accordion wheezes when we look at her.

I am fascinated by her hair. Why does it look ashy?

    •  It looks like it was sprayed down with a can of Aquanet, then she ran a brush through it to give it that powdery look.  Ew.

  • If you need a bra, this is not the dress for you.

    • Visible foundation garments!  The bane of my existence!

      • 3boysful

One of my oddest pet peeves was–back in the day when women actually wore slips as slips, not dresses themselves–when a slip WITHOUT a slit was worn under a skirt WITH a slit, and all that polyester showed.

  • SouthernGirlRena

Okay, there are hoof shoes – and then there are HOOF SHOES.  Does she have toes?

    • kimmeister

They are bizarre shoes for sure.

      • PinkLemon

         stumpification ruins the nation.

    • quiltrx

They actually appear to have really pointy toes, if you look at the first shot (look at her left foot).  Optical illusion hooves, I think.

I actually thought they looked like tap shoes for spinsters.

  • Dagney

I really wish she would stand up straight.

  • ooo, that *length*. Not good.

  • Maybe I’m a freak, but I think she looks good. I’m  not thrilled with the way her bra is showing, but at least she’s wearing one. The color is great on her and I actually like the shoes.

    • Coralie Legister

      I agree.

    • My only problem with the dress is that is doesn’t appear to fit her quite properly.  It looks like it’s pulling at the bust and creating that unfortunate arc at the waist.  If it fit her better (and had a different bra), I’d rather like it.

  • Sobaika

Crazy 67-year old neighbor with a family money.

    • No, I thought (the closeup on the front of the post) was an old picture of my mom when my mom was in her late 40s! I swear. I wanted to know how TLo managed to get a picture of my mom!

    • red

I had to sign up/in just because of granny Gyllenhaal. She bugs me no end! No beauty queen and looks way older than her years. After seeing her as part of a love triangle (what what?!?) with ‘Batman’ and that handsome Aaron Eckhart, and then as the love interest of Will Ferrell in Stranger than Fiction!? I must say: nay nay. Do something about that hair, plan your undergarments accordingly, stand up straight…remember that adding a touch of wackadoodle in your case just makes you look even more frumpy. 🙁

  • RocknRollmom

And this is why she is irritating as all get out.  This is a travesty.  I don’t know that I would like the dress on anyone–looks cheap and shiny.  But on her it is just hideous.  How do you walk out the door looking like that let alone go on national television.  And her hair—-ok, I struggle with my hair with similar waves etc, but I don’t have access to stylists etc.  And she is always looks smug to me.  I just want to smack her.  Sorry, venting.

    • Le_Sigh

YES.  Its that horrific posture coupled with smug-face just screams spoiled teen.  I want to tape a yardstick to her back.

    • J. Preposterice

She does look smug, but I think that’s just her face.  Like how a lot of people think my friend H. is super-hostile and angry when actually that’s just how her face looks, and how people think I’m kind of intense and icy.  It’s just my face!  That’s what it does!

      • formerlyAnon

I have a friend whose face-at-rest expression is almost exactly like Miss Maggie’s here, and when she smiles it’s even smugger looking.

Except I know her and never thought of it as smug, I think it’s kind of cute.

  • TomBord

Satin for a morning talk show ? I guess, if you’re a vampire.

    • baxterbaby

YES!  It does look like the awful tufted faux-satin stuff used to line caskets!

  • The colour of the dress is beautiful but it’s too shiny and hideously ugly. The shoes are, um, interesting but I don’t think they go with the dress and whatever she did to her hair makes her look like she’s just had her weekly set and Kitty’s Klip ‘n’ Kurl.

    • afabulous50

Kitty’s Klip ‘n’ Kurl!  I love that!  I burst out laughing in my cube here….uh oh…

  • I glanced at that intro picture and my first thought was: Who is that fabulous 90 year old broad?!? And then I saw the title and found out that it was Maggie. I’m not even kidding about this, though I wish I was.

  • janetjb

None of this look belongs together.

  • charlotte

Are you sure that this is not Maggie’s grandmother? Ethel Gyllenhaal, looking fabulous for 80!

  • Trisha26

Ohh…much prefer this look to the two-toned beach dress & sandals from the movie premiere.

  • another_laura

    accordion wheezes!  BWAH!!!!!  love you

  • AudreysMom

You know how we look at Lea Michelle and say, ‘Of course”? Maggie G, bless her heart, gets the same response because of her consistency. Only it isn’t sex kitten diva glam, it’s that co-op shopper/hostel dweller don’t know how to dress my body vibe that’s part of who she is. (Mind you, this isn’t a put down since I’m a proud member of the tribe.) Even notice that here she’s wearing a black bra or cami underneath. Probably makes it easier for her to peel off the dress and throw on some jeans and a tshirt at home.

    • Co-op shopper, LOL.  Oh man, you know, I actually kinda love the dress but it on her???   No thank you.  I really wish she would just walk around in a t-shirt and jeans with her hair up in a pony tail.  And maybe some $3 chanclas from china town.  That would be much more palatable than her magical ability to de-fashion any and all articles of clothing she wears.

  • She dresses like she is so old!

  • SewingSiren

It’s a little short waisted on her, which is odd because on the model it looks to have a regular waist. But all and all I think it looks pretty good. I also thought the lace dress on the Whitepage was beautiful on her. She has kind of an old fashioned face , modest cut, yet fashion forward ,dresses suit her very well in my opinion.

  • agentilities

she looks like a psychic in that dress. Maybe she’s dressing for a new role…the sequel to “Secretary”?

  • Candigirl1968

Clearly Viola needs to stand next to her at all times. Otherwise, it’s just going to be a hot mess.

  • Lilak

Not crazy about the dress itself, but as the model demonstrates (as – regrettably – they so often do), one needs a longer & flatter torso than Miss G’s in order to wear it.  And…er…better taste in shoes.

Points to Miss G for looking fresh and rested lately, however!

  • MilaXX

That’s amazing. She is a nice looking woman yet she some manages to downgrade 80% of the clothes she chooses to wear.

  • Bree The Vole

I think she’s one of the most attractive women alive, but her taste in clothes is so bad it’s awful. The shoes are especially hideous.

  • tallgirl1204

It was re-cut for her too short and too small.  The model’s version sits on her waist;  Ms. M’s sits empire-high.  The model’s version lands at the bottom of her knee (IMHO, a flattering length, if rather modest) while Ms. M’s sits at the top of her knee, which looks good on hardly anyone who is not blessed with dancer legs.  The shoulders give the feeling of width and the very slightest hippy puff on the model;  they are smoothed and pulled to tightness on Ms. M.  I think this is a dress for black tights and black booties (not loving the model’s shoes either.)  Too bad.  It’s a beautiful color, and I love the design, personally.

  • Jangle57

Gee, my first thought was: Maxine comes to life

  • Eva_baby

Before I clicked through this I was convinced you guys were doing something on Dame Edna. No lie.

  • We need to stage an intervention. TLo, grab Mr. Zee and a designer. Bitter Kittens, grab Miss Maggie. Someone bring a mirror because this girl doesn’t own one.

For the love of chocolate chip cookies, this kills me.

    • LocMama

I just can’t get over how proud she seems about her look.  That’s the face I rock when I’ve gotten myself together & look all slick & shiny.

My children always hear me saying “For the love of Pete!”, but I’m going to be trotting out your phrase just for giggles.  Hopefully I don’t end up owing anyone a plate of cookies.

  • Rand Ortega

I think she’s the star most needing a stylist (If she has 1, God help them both). She just looks perpetually frumpy. SMH.

  • ojosazules

The hair and the shoes makes it Gangster Moll to me, in a good way.

    • formerlyAnon

I get that and I like it. But it’s too rumply and off to be Gangster Moll in a good way in which to be photographed. She needs to keep going and land on “Top Gangster’s Glamorous Moll.”

  • Jennifer Coleman

Slouchy Granny Chic strikes once again!!

  • I really think her posture is 50% of the problem.

    • Dagney

I think her posture is 1 billion percent of the problem.

    • formerlyAnon

At LEAST 50% of the problem.  (My mom is laughing hysterically if she can see from beyond the grave that *I* am critiquing someone else’s posture.)

  • iCouture

    …..her brother is SOO HOT…

  • Valdri8

I love her, but I saw her on Anderson Cooper yesterday morning and almost threw my bagel at the tube. WTF could anyone be thinking to leave the house like that! What is with the fucking bra showing- and the shoes. What a scalding mess of hideousness.

  • neofashionista

if u couldnt see her bra and she wore completely different shoes it may not be unforgiveable perhaps
shame she is pretty in the movies

  • What makes me so sad is that I actually feel like she is an incredibly attractive woman. She just makes such poor wardrobe choices.

  • joe_tey83

Yikes, it looks like the dress is having a seizure.

  • dress_up_doll

    Clearly, Maggie HATES fashion.

  • BeeBeauNYC

Well, at the least the color is a nice choice!

  • NCDFan

    Dreadfully aging.

  • Scott Isaacs

This makes me throw my fan across the room, shake my fingernails and sashay out of the room, all “I can’t. I just can’t.”

Nope. That’s exactly the response. I seriously can’t with this one. She sucks words and sense-making synaptic transmissions out of my body like a vacuum.

  • I think she reached for Lady Gaga and landed on Queen Mother instead.  Oh, Maggie.

  • StellaZafella

    Great actress.
    Eccentric, careless style sense.
Possibly doesn’t care what others think?

    Maybe this generation’s Ruth Gordon.

    • Adriana_Paula

      I like it.

  • GorgeousThings

“We can’t help but hear accordion wheezes when we look at her.”

    OMG, you slay me!!!

  • When I saw it in thumbnail picture form, I thought it was Dame Edna!  Never a good thing unless of course you are Dame Edna 😀

  • At least she’s wearing a bra for a change. Not that it helps.

    • But the problem is, you can SEE the bra she’s wearing!!  Through the weave in the dress!  OMFG!

  • Jessi03

    Aaaaaand Granny Mags is back!

  • Did she age 40 years overnight? What is going on?

  • Judy_S

It’s the posture. She needs a dress that looks good if you are slouching. That two-tone number she was sporting the other day got her by, maybe because of the straight up-and-down line. The problem that bothers me with this dress on her is at the front of the waistline, where the line actually rises gently because she stands (and walks, somehow) with her tummy thrust forward. All the same, I enjoy her as a slouching character!

  • Allison Woods

Mommy has a headache. Now be a good kitten and fetch mommy’s heroin.

  • Zippypie

    Sweet Jesus.

  • I actually prefer this dress to the one you marked up – but the styling is not good.

  • Imasewsure

She usually looks so bad. I don’t mind this one at all (except for the bra showing and the shiny shiny of it all which I hardly ever like). I think it’s much better than the doily dress from a few days ago

  • marilyn

The color is good for her.  At least that is a plus.  However……..  The dress is for a much younger person.  It would be fine for a younger woman.  If there werenot cutouts on the top, this dress would be good for a tween.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

    She’s the Great Plum-kin.

  • formerlyAnon

I think there’s so much potential here. I like the overall shape of her hair with her face, but IMO, she needed to commit to more curls or more waves.

I love that color on her but I just want to reach into the picture and yank that waist line down so the bodice doesn’t look so rumpled and the just-starting-to-show pregnant tummy illusion is minimized.  Also, visible undergarments kinda ruin those cutouts.

The shoes are beyond hideously stumpify-ing her legs. (Though I suspect I’d like them from side view.) I can’t decide where to move the hem of the skirt, or if it’d be o.k. as is if the aforementioned waist/bodice/tummy sweep were corrected.

And dear god woman. I know that poor posture is the #1 reason that *I* don’t want to be photographed candidly. But you’re photographed candidly all the time, you have no choice. So pay somebody to follow you around nagging and poking you in the back, if you can’t do it yourself and your mom is no longer available for the job.

  • You cant have tits and wear that dress properly.

  • Yikes. Rue du Fail.

  • Call me Bee

When I saw that thumbnail, I thought this was my sister’s Italian mother-in-law.  My sister in in her late 50s.

  • Pterodactyl111

Hmm I kind of like it. It’s a good color for her.

  • I love, love, LOVE Maggie, but as a fashion icon, she’s hopeless.

  • Bozhi

Oh that is not her dress and even if it was that is not how to wear it, not with whatever that black thing she is wearing under it.  And she needs a hair/makeup makeover.

  • I can’t get past the lipstick.

  • quiltrx

Geez.  Why does the dress look all neat on the model and like a tortured sack on her?

  • DebbieLovesShoes

“accordion wheezes”…. bwa ha ha (now that’s all I can see, as well)

  • cr** on a cracker….

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i’m the only person who likes this dress, i think. i also think that a largely clear brassiere wouldve saved it. there cant be nobody on earth who makes one or who can rig one up. if there isnt, i have yr new career for you.

    • alyce1213

I like it too.  I bet it’s nicer in person and moves well, too.

    • formerlyAnon

Oh, I like the dress. I also think I’d like it on her, if she stood up straight, the waist was lower on her torso & her bra didn’t show.

      • PaulaBerman

The problem is, it doesn’t really fit her. The model has all that ribboning on the front laying flat down her stomach. Maggie has it all bunched up, because her hips are too wide to pull it down like it should be.

    • I definitely like the dress, she’s just wearing it so sloppy…and the shoes really did me in.

    • mmc2315

I mostly like the dress, too!  The shoes not so much.  The lipstick color not at all.  Hair style is cute.  Meh on the purse.  Agreeing the bra situation/see thru panel is a problem needing a fix.

    • Corsetmaker

Wonderbra make a plunge bra that would be hidden under this. It’s cut away in the centre and has a clear bridge. Actually I’m amazed nobody has made a bra using the same clear plastic they use on the straps. It would only work in panels though or it would suffer the same fate as clear shoes – misting up! 😀

  • PeaceBang

    What is WITH her?

  • frankystein123

    She looks 60.

  • Oh really (she says in a squeaky voice)? I kinda’ like it.  I mean ,there are problems but the color is great and I like the length and the shoes and her hair and shades. Like you guys said, I grade her on a curve.

  • jmorino08

If she pulled down the waist and wore it like the model, it would be cute, right? I haven’t had enough coffee to make a proper judgement.

  • EEKstl

From the sublime to the ridiculous.

  • nancylee61

God, the hair, the dress, the lip, even the glasses all make her look like she is 60 years old. Not liking this at all on her.

  • MaryMitch

She never stands up straight, does she?

  • lilazander

The dress is hideous–on the model and elsewhere (i.e. on M.G.); and the shoes, ugh….

  • ccm800

Im at a point that I don’t even get why this one has a career. She or her brother barring one great performance.

  • PaulaBerman

Someone needs to take Maggie by the hand and WALK her to a high end foundation garment store. Then Maggie needs to get out her credit card and buy about 10 really great, well-fitting, supportive bras. This needed to be done about a decade ago, but better late than never.

  • MzzPants

Well, at least it’s a good color for her.
