Lily Collins in Balmain

Posted on September 11, 2012

We dig this look so hard:

Lily Collins attends the premiere of ‘Writers’ during the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival in a Balmain dress paired with Casadei blade pumps and Tiffany & Co. jewelry.

Balmain Pre-Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Kasia Struss (WOMEN)

Basically, any time a pretty little ingenue goes out in something other than the typical ingenue dress, we mentally clap our hands (if that makes any sense; now we can’t stop thinking about the concept of mental hands). It’s just so easy for these gals to give into pressure and make the expected choices of folded-napkin cocktail dresses or Disney Princess gowns. To see her wearing something like this; something with a little edge to it, fills our hearts with warmth. We’ll probably be much nicer to her the next time she goes out wearing something that looks like ass.

And it’s a kickass look, to boot.

Now *this* I would give a WERQ to. She looks adorable and low & behold! Her shoes fit.

    • Sobaika

They fit but they’re not really the color I would pick for the outfit. Other than that it’s definitely a Werq. What a different and refreshing choice.

      • MilaXX

I don’t mind the color, I think red or blue would have been too obvious.

        • Sobaika

I was thinking something like a bronze.

          • MilaXX

            I could see that working

          •  I would have said that WAS bronze – what colour do you see it as?

          • Sobaika

A stronger, true bronze that worked against her skin tone more and played up the little metallic detailing in the dress.

    • Beardslee

I noticed that too!  Cruelly high, as usual, but they are the right size.

  • TheOriginalLulu

She looks really great. I love the look more with the tights and boots, though.

    • TieDye64

Yeah, the original look is kick-ass, what with the belt, tights and boots. But, this still is pretty damn good.

  • PinkLemon

Luhdat with the navy tights & boots. I have a hard time seeing dark tights with a light dress, THANKS MOM. FOR THAT ONE. But that look in particular really makes me come around to it.

  • tereliz

LOVE Balmain. And now I officially love Lily Collins. I’d been kind of meh about her during the Mirror Mirror poledance (that’s her, right?) but she looks so fab here I can’t help but love her!

  • I’m digging this.  Elle Fanning, take notes please.

    • gabbilevy

Yes! Elle could totally go this route, and rock it.

  • marilyn

    She looks great!

  • Tatiana Luján

There’s somethong bothering me about the shiny face and the shade of red on her hair, but I love her dress and I like her shoes (Are those shoes satin pumps? Liking them would be a first).

  • GTrain

I like it better with the black tights.

  • butterflysunita

I do like it.  Interesting silhouette and I like the pattern too.  (I learned to say “silhouette” from watching Project Runway.)

    • jenuwefa

…and “fashion forward”….lordy I get tired of hearing that phrase!

      • Scarlet39

Particularly from people who really aren’t “fashion forward” (Kenley Collins, I’m looking at YOU).

  • another_laura

The dress is super on her.  If this were an in/out, I’d give it an IN with snaps (not a WERQ because effortless).  I have quibbles about the color of the shoes and her eyebrows.  I mean a little tweezer usage wouldn’t hurt – with the dark hair down and all, that’s the makeup element which, while striking, is not striking me in the right way.

  • LOVE!! That is a fab dress and can someone send a pair of these shoes to everyone with a pair of nude, patent platforms and tell them that if they need a neutral this is their new ‘go to.’

  • gabbilevy

Love this! What an incredible dress. Makeup is pretty and fresh but wish the hair had a little more oomph.

  • Such an IN.

And THAT, Goop, is the way to deploy super straight center part hair. When you have a dress that doesn’t need accentuation.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I’m surprised Kristen Stewart didn’t try to rip this dress off this poor girl’s body. Talk about being the OTHER Snow White in the ultra mini dress.

This isn’t on topic, but her eyebrows bother me. They’re like forest in the front, wax party in the back.

    • Thank you for mentioning her eyebrows!! I’m all about thick eyebrows, but hers just look badly waxed.

  • Aly Light

I’d like it better without the high collar. I also don’t like the long sleeves, but I think I’d be able to handle them without the collar.

  • Patricia Gillett

This should be a WERQ. She looks great and the dress is awesome.

  • Baby-WERQ!

  • ScarlettHarlot

    Karen Gillan needs that dress.

  • jw_ny

    I totally dig it too!

    Mental standing ovation.  😉

  • kolokOlchik

Why is this not a WERQ?

  • sk8tfan

LURV! And extra brownie points for wearing shoes that fit.

  • Knightley

Much better than the model, although I am not a big fan of the shoe color.  I would have gone with red or blue, but she is definitely rocking the hell out of that dress!

  • amywinns

    Huge honkin’ exposed zipper UGGGGHHH!

Other than that, yes, very cute.

  • Anathema_Device

Very cool dress. She looks fab in it.

  • LOVE it! That’s a kickass dress, and perfect shoes for the look.

  • leftcoastpickle

Lurve the dress, but I loathe those shoes. Loathesome. She has the exact right figure for that dress, but her “styling” needs some work. And again, a plea for flat hair to please go out of style, even on the young. No one over 30 should be allowed to purchase or possess a flat iron.

    • Laylalola

I’ve been on a years-long rant about the damn forced keratin flat-hair look. The fact that Melissa, one of the most in-style gals on the current PR, goes back and forth between wearing her hair straight and going for the diffused kink gives me hope we’re nearing a turning point.

  • Lisa Kramp

That dress is Killa. Nicely done!

  • mbelchic

    Needs the belt-

  • frannyprof

Love it on her and love it more on the model. The effect of the black tights contrasted with the bright dress is gorgeous.

  • drdirection

Man, I want that dress so hard

  • Laylalola

    I can’t with the eyebrows.

  • Had she done the dark tights and boots look, it would have been nearly perfect, but she’s very pale and the dress kind of fades on her.

It is a stunning dress, though.

  • I don’t get the Neaderthal eyebrow thing (PLEASE tell me that’s not the new trend!) but the dress is super cute.

  • LOVE the dress, and the gold pumps were the perfect match.  She looks fabulous!

  • That’s a hot dress.  SO much better without the black leggings.

  • jhedman

Dress looks like a dropcloth, but she’s working it.  LOVE the shoes.

  • quiltrx

What a cute, edgy dress!  She looks great in it, and just as important, she looks like she FEELS great in it.

  • olsonam

The zipper needs to be invisible

  • I want those shoes so bad.

  • littlemac8

Darling girl.  Great dress and interesting shoe choice.  An original.  I think people like the black tights bed the model has mile high legs and effect not achievable by many.

  • janetjb

Fantastic.  She’s not Snow White in that dress.

  • A pass on the satin pump? Tsk. It’s a great dress, but that’s a detail fail. Also, if it were me (and this may just be me playing dress-up in my head) I’d pair it with a jaunty little hat. And a navy bootie.

  • Covet!

  • NCDFan

I like this very much. Glad she didn’t opt for the belt or the navy hose.

  • RzYoung

I love this look, I think I’d like it even more on K Stew

  • EEKstl

What a fantastic dress.  And how REFRESHING to see some interesting, non-platform shoes.  BTW, did anyone catch Katie Couric on Leno last night? (I don’t watch it but it crept in after our local news).  She looked terrific, but I was most interested in her lovely teal suede pumps.  Clearly a good trend starting. (And no, I didn’t forget about Shelley O’s bright pink pair at the Convention).

    • formerlyAnon

I saw it, saw most of it, sat there and critiqued her (hard) in my head  – but the shoes never. even. registered.

I don’t think it’s their fault. I have a love-hate (or really, “grudgingly admire-hate”) reaction to her and I’m always trying to figure out why I can’t come down on one side of the fence.

      • formerlyAnon

P.s. It didn’t help that watching her and Leno exchange repartee was like watching two sets of wind-up plastic teeth chattering at each other.

Edited to correct grammar. I hope.

  • AnneElliot

Cute, but I find the exposed zipper very distracting.  It detracts from the print.  However, I’m loving the shoes.  SO TIRED of those horrible platforms, so anything pretty and delicate looking is a godsend.

  • BazoDee

I adore this dress. What a truly unique piece -kudos to her and her team for picking it.

  • Diane_G

I LOVE the tights and the belt on the model, I wish she kept it but I understand wanting to edge herself away from that, so not to be too close to the model’s look. But it’s so perfect..sigh. The model looks like some leggy fantasized French soldier or guard of the future with that perfect posture. Am I crazy? Am I the only one seeing it?

  • lucasuk82

Awesome dress, and she’s wearing it with great poise.

  • guest2visits

She’s so cute, but the collar is making this dress look very space age flight attendant.

  • formerlyAnon

I love the cut and the beaded(?) embellishments in the geometric pattern and the colors. Not at all a fan of the print.

  • ojosazules

Very interesting and pretty dress, but there is something odd about her head coming out of the high neck that I can’t quite put my finger on. Too much neck for the eyebrows? Like those eyebrows need some space to breathe?

  • Judih1

I like the look on the model better. The way Lily has it with those high heel bronze shoes, makes it look too mature on her instead of edgy

  • It needed the belt.  Right now it’s edging toward Chinese restaurant waitress.

  • Corsetmaker

I like the dress, but I like the styling on the model better. She’s kind of sapped the appeal out of it a bit, made it a bit blander. But still a cool dress.
