Keira Knightley in Chanel Couture

Posted on September 05, 2012

Audrey Hepburn is so pissed she’s dead and can’t wear this dress.

Keira Knightley attends the premiere of ‘Anna Karenina’ in London in a Chanel couture gown and jewelry.

Chanel Fall 2012 Couture Collection/Model: Saskia de Brauw (VIVA)

It gets just a little wonky when the bustline meets that overlay of flowers, but the overall effect is so pretty that we can’t be bothered to complain about it (more than we already have, that is). Just a beautiful look – and one that very few can effectively pull off. It’s got Keira written all over it.

Oooo, lovely. I’m really excited for Anna Karenina mostly because Keira consistently brings it on the red carpet.

  • btw… i was hoping to read “model: hilary swank” hahahaha

    • Whoa! I had to scroll back up to get a look at her, they could be sisters!!

    •  I thought the same thing!

    • SassieCassy

      omg cant unsee

      • OMG, my eyes!  LOL!

    • Le_Sigh

Me too!  I did a double-take when I saw the runway photo.

    • janetjb

I thought Hilary Swank also, but that wouldn’t be Hilary’s dress at all.

    • BerlinerNYC

Exactly! She is serving Hilary Swank realness.

  • MarissaLG

She seems like the WORST person you’d ever come across, but damn can that girl wear a dress.

    • piecesofconfetti

I don’t get that impression. That’s more Natalie Portman, to me.

    •  She always seems so sourpuss on the Red Carpet but I have a feeling it’s because she’s been extensively coached that her natural smile, while adorable and kind of endearing, is a lot of teeth for the kind of “serious movie star” look she’s going for. (Here’s a picture, for reference: )

    • shawnhunter

I remember her saying in an interview that she gets REALLY nervous on the red carpet, in a way that most people probably wouldn’t expect from her. I imagine she does certain things to try to keep calm and maybe she comes off unpleasant because of that?

  • It’s a bit lamp shade-y below the knee, but the effect of the hard/ soft metallic belt/ floral applique is divine.

  • That picture from the back, I mean, GORGEOUS.  She does kind of look like a bride, but I’m not mad at it.  She is seriously beautiful in this (and, well, in general).

  • Sal Neslusan

gorgeous… but girl needs to stand up straight.

    • WERQitspice

      Audrey Hepburn knew posture-

    • ConnieBV

It bothers me a bit that the dress is so loose around her hips that it is TURNING AROUND, but yes. Gorgeous.

  • I think she looks perfect.  That is a fantastic piece of couture, and I shudder to think how many hundred hours went into it.  That said, Keira K is an ideal choice for it.

    • DaringMiss

Agreed.  Anyone with more bust would look ridiculous in it, and it hides Keira’s frequently scarily sharp shoulder blades!

      •  Another characteristic she shares with Audrey is her exceptionally slim frame.

        • Glammie

Audrey, though, had more of a waist.  Keira’s a bit more straight.  Damn, Audrey would have been amazing in that dress.  But, then, what wasn’t amazing on Audrey?

          • Hell, she looked pretty good dressed as a charwoman in “How to Steal a Million”

    • MissAnnieRN

I agree – I think this is divine.  Her make-up and hair are perfection as well.

  • theblondette

Lovely dress, but does anyone else think the belt looks kind of cheap?

    • pattyw

Yes. I was surprised to see the belt was part of the runway look.

    • SassieCassy

yeah, its super metallic-ness doesnt go with the ethereal dress

    • Tatiana Luján

A velvet belt would look prettier.

      • kelsita421

thought the same thing! in the view from the back, i can squint my eyes and pretend it’s velvet.

  • rissa42210

Give your gays a raise, grrl!

  • Judy_J

    Perfection.  She looks lovely.

  • Gorgeous. And perfect for Anna Karenina premier, thematically. Home run.

  • She is just gorgeous and these types of dresses (pale, demure, etc) are difficult to pull of for most women, but then again Keira is not like most women, is she?

  • She comes across as rather sweet and funny if you watch her interviews. I used to not like her either, but that was until I actually heard her talk. She’s adorable!

    • I’ve always liked her ever since “Bend it Like Beckham”.  I love the scene where she’s driving down the street like a maniac with her mother, explaining that she and Jess aren’t lesbians. “Me and Jess were fighting because we both fancy our coach… Joe!”  “Joe, a man, Joe?”  “Yeah, as in male, Joe! Joe, our coach, Joe, man, Joe!”

      • shawnhunter

I watched this twice last week for the first time in years and that’s one of my favorite parts! Her mom is HILARIOUS. “There’s a reason why Sporty Spice is the only one without a fella!”

        • mountainFashionista

Her mom is one of my favorite movie characters ever!

  • I love it. This should be a WERQ!

    • LaylaSV

Amen sister. It is both thematically and stylistically appropriate for the opening of a movie like AK, while still retaining a modern and youthful feel – a difficult thing in itself. But mostly it is a gorgeous look, that she looks flipping gorgeous in.

  • At the risk of sounding like a total drama queen, I literally gasped when I saw the full picture.  She looks AMAZING!  She’s carrying on the Audrey torch for sure!  It’s so perfect and beautiful – she’s hitting every mark with the fit, the belt, the hair, the makeup, everything everything everything!  This should be a WERQ post for sure!

    •  If they ever decided to do an Audrey Hepburn biopic, Ms Knightley would be a the slam dunk perfect choice. She shares a great deal of the same physical character, in terms of her facial structure, body type and demeanor.

      • MUCH better than Jennifer Love Hewitt – what were they thinking!

        •  PLUS, she’s a better actor, overall.  Yeah I never got what was going on in their heads, choosing JLH for the role.

        • Tatiana Luján

      • luciaphile

But then she’d have to act and all would be lost.

  • Dot

Gorgeous dress. Her incessant and distracting facial posing always irritates me, though. In every photo, it’s as if she’s trying so hard to purse her lips in just the right way.

    • Tatiana Luján

and she kind of chews the inside of her cheeks to bring up her facial bones. I hate that.

      • kimmeister

She must have chronic canker sores!

  • alyce1213

You had me howling at “Audrey Hepburn is so pissed she’s dead . . . ”

This dress is astounding, true couture, and Keira’s rarely looked better.

  • nannypoo

Elegant. She wears a gown beautifully. The green gown she wore in Atonement was the best ever.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

Loved, loved that green gown.  Keira does wear couture well.

    • Billie_Dawn

I remember seeing that movie in the theater, and when she appeared on screen in that dress, people in my theater (including me) literally gasped out loud. One of the most remarkable movie costumes in recent years.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Sigh… this is perfect.  A perfect match of girl and dress.

  • WERQitspice

perfect dress on the perfect body! it looks like one Nicole Kidman would have tried to pull off…..thankfully she did not

  • Erin Nice

I love this look (and her) very much. I always think that she looks stunning, but this is a real home run for me.

  • And someone should point out to Rachel Weisz that THIS is how you do a super ruffly girly white gown without looking like a toilet paper cover!

  • VicksieDo

Keira is made for Chanel.  Awesome.

  • Anathema_Device

I think the bottom, trumpet part is a little wonky. It looks more fluid in the runway photos. Other than that quibble, I think this is a great dress on her. She looks lovely.

  • dsco3031

Absolutely gorgeous. Hair, makeup, dress– perfect.

  • GorgeousThings

I think it would be less wonky if she had a bust to hold it up. I’m not saying that bitchily (well, maybe just a little) – I think it would look better if it was a little more, um, padded out.

Is it just me, or does the runway model look like she’s channelling a very fierce Hilary Swank?

    • Tatiana Luján

      It isn’t just you.

  • ringthing

She is very high up on my irrational celebrity love list. I think she looks striking, modern and beautiful.

  • That dress is great.  And it suits Keira so well.  She really does have sort of an Audrey Hepburn vibe, doesn’t she?  I’d never made the connection before, but it’s completely accurate.

  • afabulous50

All I can see are tissue-paper flowers.

    • Ginny Ellsworth

I’m trying so hard to see what everyone else likes about it and I can’t. Maybe I don’t have enough exposure to couture clothing. Sigh. All I see is a toilet paper cover with a Barbie stuck in it.

    • gabbilevy

I do think it’s lovely, but it also looks like something someone might make at a bridal shower.

  • I love everything about this. This is a WERQ for me.

  • omg, “Audrey Hepburn is so pisssed she’s dead and can’t wear this dress.” In all these years since the Project Rungay days, TLo have been hilarious, but this statement just takes it to a whole new level. You make me lol even during a crazy, terrible day!!!

  • Lilithcat

    Too frou-frou for Audrey.

  • l_c_ann

    Fleurchons, just as Angela predicted.
(OK, I’ll duck and run now.)

  • S_Swift

She looks fantastic. I should like this but I just can’t with this dress. The first thing that popped into my mind was bridal Tournament of Roses Parade float.  Maybe I’m just cranky at being back to work after a long weekend.

  • I shouldn’t like this because of the toilet paper effect, but I’m too entranced by her pretty face and the unexpected buttons down the back. She looks fantastic.

  • padma sallah

Flawless. She owns it even better than the model. This is a gorgeous dress that she was born to wear.

  • mjude

quite lovely.  the girl always looks like she is sucking on straw.

  • BazoDee

GF looks amazing and she knows it!

  • MilaXX

Beautiful. Love the lip color on her.

  • Lilak

Surprised I like this so much … the gown on its own + Keira in it.  Usually, if I’m in favor of a Keira look it’s because “it suits her,” but here she’s gone a degree further and is actually *selling* the thing.

  • mhleta

Mmmmarvelous dress! This is the right way to do that nude/blushy colorless color. She doesn’t look nekked and fleshy because there’s so much soft texture to it. Hair and makeup REALLY good, too! I’ve never seen her look more beautiful.

  • sk8tfan

A special shout out to her unsung hero of a makeup artist, because her makeup is flawless. She looks better than the model.

  • Susan Crawford

    Dear Tom and Lorenzo,

Somewhere in Fashion Heaven, Audrey IS wearing this dress. She’s having dinner with Alexander McQueen, YSL, Christian Dior and Issy Blow. The champagne flutes are filled, the caviare is Beluga, and the conversation has just picked up as Cary Grant strolls in a bit late.

  • I actually got goosebumps looking at these pictures. It is classic Keira, in that it looks like something she’s worn a thousand times before, but that’s exactly why it’s so effective – nothing wrong with having a standard look, especially if that look turns out results like this. Gorgeous.

  • EEKstl

    Yeah, she looks pretty fabulous.

  • AthenaJ

Now I’m having visions of undead Audrey, attacking Keira for this dress.
The good part is I think I know what I’m going to be for Halloween…

  • marilyn

Don’t like the belt. It is metallic and modern while the dress is romantic and vintage looking.  It need a belt of some kind, just not that one.  The dress reminds me of a bottle brush.

  • Trisha26

It looks like my (long-deceased) grandmother’s chenille bedspread.

  • guest2visits

I love the material, I love the color, I even love all the cotton-y rosettes; but I don’t like the design of the dress itself.
I especially hate the collar/neckline area.

  • snarkykitten

surely there’s some level of gradation between “I’m super cute!” and “I’m sucking on warheads like they owe me money”

  • lrhoff

Now that’s a WERQ — you missed it, boys.  Tsk tsk.

  • nancylee61

I just don’t get what is so great about the Nazi Chanel look. The clothes are always frumpy, and don’t make any sense. Maybe it is because I get really upset that everyone fawns over the Nazi’s line, even when she was a Nazi.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Gorgeous!  Love the darker hair color on her – it really suits her.  Her makeup is flawless, hair is beautiful, and jewelry is appropriately understated for such an eye-catching dress.  Perfect.  I would have given her a WERQ.

  • boomchicabowwow

Hmmm…interesting that this shade of pink had so many BK’s up in arms over Christopher’s dress winning last week on Project Runway.  Maybe I’m not reading the color right?

  • shawnhunter

Stunning. This is a WERQ for me.

  • Chanel can be so … pink.

  • SuzBald

I have inexplicable love for her.  She looks amazing.  And I can’t wait for the movie.

  • I think it’s stunning.

  • SapphoPoet

  • bitterk

  • margaret meyers

    Really great makeup.

  • Holy cow, I didn’t realize they were making another version with her in it.  I <3 her all kinds so I'm excited.  Plus the rest of the cast looks interesting and I'm DYING to see the costuming, which I'm assuming is beautiful.  Just like her right here.  But I agree with the comments about the bottom.  Not crazy about how the flowers resolve themselves but it's not giving me hives so…

  • quiltrx

Audrey definitely wouldn’t have made sour-ass bitchface in it!

  • jmorino08

    Not loving the belt

  • LambeeBaby

She looks lovely. The color is beautiful on her and the accessories are perfect. Delicate and feminine.

  • ThaliaMenninger

And THAT is how you make a blush-colored top with frou frou, Christopher Palau.

  • oatmealpie

Oh, Audrey Hepburn is dead. I has a sad.

  • Suzanne Heist

    I love her smile!

  • I like everything down to the knees, but the skirt is the wrong shape.  Ms. Knightley makes it look gorgeous, even though on the model it looked like a sofa.

  • PeaceBang

Wow, that’s a honey of a dress and perfect for Miss K. However, I am torn about the movie, as I don’t know that I can bring myself to see Anna Karenina played by Keira’s chin. She ACTS WITH HER CHIN. Thank you for listening.

  • DeTrop

Keira Knightley is beautiful.  Her face here is beautiful.  The dress gets a big NO from me.  I don’t see its finer points.  I will say she looks much better in it than the runway model, but this is too bridal looking.  Looks like something to be worn at an outdoor wedding in the Summer!
