Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Thom Browne

Posted on September 10, 2012

Looking over the last several days of posts, we realize we’ve left our kittens boy-deficient. Allow us to rectify.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt attends the premiere of ‘Looper’ during the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival in Thom Browne.

There ya go. That should shut your mouths for a while.

We’d give him a WERQ but we’re very upset with him for wearing a long hem in a Thom Browne suit, since the brand is pretty much defined by the highwater hems it brought back into vogue. And also because his tie is sloppy. Tsk.

Still, the overall effect is good. It’s a gorgeous suit.

Is it the camera angle, or is there also something weirdly proportioned about the length of his jacket? It seems like it should be about an inch longer.

      • Sobaika

I agree. I’m no menswear expert, but shouldn’t it cover more of his bum? It looks a size too small.

        • Joyce VG

           Agreed!  Love him though.

        • AudreysMom

I didn’t think that anything would look too short/tight on JGL but this… Still. I want to just keep him tucked away for my personal use. Him and Tom Hiddleston.

          • GraceArmstrong

            Hiddles is delish.

          • emily

             Truth. They’re both gorge.

        • Gayer Than Thou

Yes, the jacket looks a little too small.

      • John O’Connell

That’s the Thom Brown signature look. The pants should be about 2 – 3 inches shorter than average as well.

        • GorgeousThings

Ah – maybe it’s the pants that make it look off – the model shots don’t look as strangely proportioned.

        • makeityourself

Yes, the short, narrow trouser and the almost shrunken jacket are the TB aesthetic. So I don’t understand why he went there on top but not on bottom. It makes both look out of proportion. A failure-to-execute for me.

    • lovelyivy

Those pants look a bit baggy on him. Maybe I’m just being thrown off by his more usual boyish skinny pants look?

      • John O’Connell

Baggy? Usually suits don’t come with leggings.

    • jw_ny

Jacket looks too tight/small on him, and the pants look too big. Skinny pants, or more fitted, would have worked much better…he has the bod for them.

      • ChiliP

I don’t know what’s going on with the jacket. He has moobs in every picture- I can’t unsee them. I love JGL, and if he had moobs I would love them too, but I doubt he does.

        • bittykitty

i KNOW… the jacket is giving him a bit of a womanly figure.

          • jw_ny

             yes…moobs and hips!  lol!

    • Kiltdntiltd

Man, is that jack ever too tight, though. Its pulling, at both the top, and bottom buttons.  Over all, however, he looks spiffy as hell.  Just a TEENSY adjustment in the jacket it would really be perfect.  His grooming is spot on.

      • Gayer Than Thou

Totally agreed — whatever look the brand is known for, it seems JGL was going for a more traditional suit fit.  If so, it’s too small.

      •ía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

Yes! All hail grooming! Sometimes I think boystars are confusing “manly” with “neckbeard” lately.

    • buffalonian

That suit, even for a Thom Browne suit, is a size too small. It’s pulling across the chest. He’s (nearly not-there) ass is sticking out.  True that he should have it hemmed shorter to go with the TB silhouette, but the crime here are the shoes! Only a banker with a limited imagination (or a police officer) should wear black shoes with navy.

      • uprightcitizen

I agree. The fit of the jacket makes him look like a little boy. A rich little boy, like Jody in “Family Affair.” Not a good look for a guy who is finally launching a career as a leading man. And I agree about the shoes …. always thought black shoes were boring with a suit like this. A gray wingtip, or a rich cordovan shoe would be tasteful, yet cool.

        • Eric Scheirer Stott

At least he’s wearing dress shoes- so many guys try to be “edgy” by wearing athletic shoes.

    • sk8tfan

He gets extra points for keeping his hands out of his pockets. Attaboy. And for all-around adorableness.

    • Julie Chase

I feel like it’s stumpifying him in some way. He doesn’t look quite as dapper. Maybe the length of the jacket? I know nothing of men’s clothes.

      He’s still adorable.

    • Andra

LOVE how the jacket is so fitted on him, and also the double vent in back, haven’t seen that in years!

    • mountainFashionista

I appreciate what he’s going for, but I think the imperfect tailoring (too small jacket + too big pants) conspires to make him look dumpy.

      • call_me_schmeg

and ‘dumpy’ is one thing JGL should never be.

        • shirab

Exactly. Meanwhile, if that jacket is too tight on J G-L, of all people, which of the gentlemanstars could possibly wear it?

          • call_me_schmeg

i read ‘gentlemanstars’ too quickly, saw ‘gangsters’ instead and immediately started thinking, “i’m sure there was one called ‘slim,’ right?…”

    • Pants_are_a_must

Why is he pursuing the double breasted suit look so hard? Is he angling for a mob movie we don’t know about? He’s JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT. He singlehandedly brought back the 3-piece suit in 2010, and we STILL see them on the red carpet all the time. Gurl, you deserve better fashion innovation than the Wall Street Shark.

    • Susi R

      He looks weird…. too tight?

    • Patricia Gillett

Yes, the jacket is a skosh tight but JGL clearly puts some work into looking good. Love that. In this age of scruffy neck beards, unbuttoned shirts, and dirty shoes, he’s a man who dresses like a gentleman. Refreshing. Doesn’t hurt that he’s cute a s button, either.

    • Shannon Stewart

I don’t know if it’s the angle of the shot or the cut of the suit but it’s making his legs look really short.  Or maybe his legs are that short.  I understand either way, being “torso blessed” myself.

    • janetjb

      Nice try.
The jacket shoulders fit in the back, but the rest looks oddly tight and short.

    • John O’Connell

And if the jacket is pulling on JGL, and it is, then this is not a suit that the average man can wear. Ever.

This may be proof that the super-slim fit silhouette has reached it’s pinnacle and the pendulum will start swinging the other way. There’s no way for this to be any more fitted or slim.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

The third pic is “does this jacket make my butt look big?”  Well lift up the panel so I can get a good look….

I have to say at least he is sharper dressed than most of the other guys his age.

      • mshesterp

And I love his face in that shot.  Your butt is just perfect, JGL–come over here…

    • Jangle57

He looks great but I agree, something seems off about the jacket.  At first I thought it was a tad too short but on second look, maybe the buttons are a tad too high?

    • Heather

Jacket’s a bit tight, pants are a bit too long, and his foundation is a bit too … visible. But he’s adorable and talented so I’m giving him a pass.

    • MilaXX

      I find him so adorable!

    • granddelusion

He’s adorable, as always, thought it looks like the jacket is squeezing his armpits a bit.

    • ecallaw1977

I love him, but I just can’t get over my aversion to double-breasted suits. I hate it!

    • Eric Scheirer Stott

A bolder tie would have been nice- with that kind of suit you can get away with some pretty flashy patterns.

    • cindy_lightballoon

      LOVE a good pinstripe suit.

      He looks adorable, as usual.

    • Clueless_Jock

I don’t get Thom Browne. His shrunken proportions only look good on petite guys.

    • In_Stitches

…he looks like the Penguin.  That is to say, pear shaped, portly and old.  Even if the jacket had fit and the pants had been hemmed, a navy tie with a navy pin stripe suit?  Sad and lazy.  On top of it all, his hair looks greasy and uncombed.  His worst effort yet.

    • SpcilK

He is all kinds of good, eventhough the suit is not his best… I adore him anyway.

    • TomBord

‘ the brand is pretty much defined by the highwater hems it brought back into vogue. Tsk.’……………..please, mary!

    • formerlyAnon

Perhaps it’s the angle of the photograph, but if the hem of his pants were the proper Thom Browne length, his legs would look weirdly short and perhaps he didn’t like that.

I think he looks great, overall.

    • AnaRoW

He looks fine. I like the suit and I like him but he’s not aging well. I’m thinking he should put the cigarettes down.

    • Lilithcat

The jacket is too tight on him.

    • unbornfawn

A little sloppy and some fit issues, but I forgive him because he does put a good effort into dressing for the red carpet.  It isn’t just him, I see it all over the place, why do the men have such trouble keeping their tie knots looking neat?

    • Dot

      That is one gorgeous suit.

    • prettybigkitty

      He is adorable.

    • Laylalola

Jacket looks too tight and sleeves too short.

    • Emily Smith

can we get a better butt shot next time

    • AllForUSophia

If you’re going to do double-breasted, make sure you’re as svelte as Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Otherwise it just looks like you swallowed a cube…

    • shopgirl716

      Cutie patootie.

    • alyce1213

I can’t wait for men’s jackets to come to their senses and be long enough again.

    • TheOriginalLulu

That jacket looks a little tight, no? He looks like a sausage link.

    • theblondette

Too small. Does his lovely self no favours.

    • emily

I feel like the jacket is missing a row of buttons… Or they’re just a smige too high up. IDK something is wonky.

    • Louise Bryan

Odd how his feet are turned out.  Almost the opposite of the gotta go pose so many women use.

Double breasted and pin-striped.  Sorry, it’s not my thing, and neither is he.  Looks good for what it is.

    • EEKstl

He looks adorable, but methinks the jacket is a skosh too tight? I think the pants fit him like a dream, but yes, need a wee bit of hemming.

    • boweryboy

What’s the point of wearing a Thom Browne suit if you’re not going to rock the floods?

    • guest2visits

Still very cute, even if the jacket’s a little snug.  Speaking of Looper; how many of us were duped into thinking there would
      be a second ‘Jumper’ ?

    • siriuslover

He looks just fine to me. Just fine.

    • GTrain

    • quiltrx

Adorable and sexy, as usual…what a wonderful combination.

And I wonder who the ginger is, behind him in several of the pics?  He has a nice profile.

    • Lisa

The fit is a little off – and there’s just something about this look that makes him look shorter.  I know we’ve seen him rock these fabulous double-breasted suits before, so I”m not sure what it is about this that’s bothering me.

    • ‘Becca’lise Deveaux

      God he’s cute.

    • AnneElliot

I agree with previous commenters, I think that something about the fit and the buttons are off.  The buttons look either too small or too close together, or too high; also, I wish the lapels were wider.  Something’s just off, it looks too small for him somehow, and I know he’s in great shape.

    • RzYoung

Does anyone know what the red button stands for?

    • neofashionista

    • Me Again

It looks a little snug.  He wore another double-breasted suit a couple weeks ago and looked fabulous.  This one is not singing with fabulosity.

    • Krysta

Jacket’s too tight.  He’s good-looking for sure, though.

    • librarygrrl64

I feel like the jacket is too short/tight, making him look oddly hippy. And we know he isn’t.

    • Mary Stone

Loving the pinstripe, the color, the button stance, the English vents…I’d have forgiven the hem which is only slightly too long.
If they ever make a decent (non-cartoonish) biopic of Rudolph Valentino here’s your man.

      …bow down…

    • Jessica O’Connell

We got a bit of a butt shot. I’m happy. No complaints coming from this girl!
