Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Alexander McQueen

Posted on September 19, 2012

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has graduated to PhD-level dressing, darlings. Behold his dissertation:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt makes an appearance on the ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ in NYC in Alexander McQueen.

Alexander McQueen Fall 2012 Collection

Okay, it’s driving us a little nuts that the right sleeve and the left pant leg look like they’re too short. We’re going with the optical illusion explanation, otherwise we’d have to conclude that his tailor is either a little insane or just hates him.

But really, these are minor complaints when faced with someone cutting a figure in a velvet plaid suit in September and making it work like crazy. We love plaid and we love a man who can rock a velvet, but even we would have advised caution when faced with a velvet plaid suit.

But JGL is no mere mortal, and even though we wouldn’t quite call this a WERQ, we are nonetheless impressed by how well he’s making this work for him. And also by his ability to simply not sweat.

That plaid velvet is making me swoon.

      • call_me_schmeg

yessssss! it makes me want to cozy on up to him and sip hot chocolate. oh, JGL, you do autumn just right.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZBFH32YG44LIIZYLSQPMBXMYCU Sarah

I would like to wear it. They should make a low, low, low priced (but still high quality) slightly plus-sized female petite version.

    • BazoDee

      DA-YUM! That is all.

    • Vaniljekjeks

      Unf.

    • StelledelMare

The man could wear just about anything at this point and I would still love him. But he does definitely know his way around a suit.

      • Araina23

He just looks so happy to exist, if that makes sense.

        • amywinns

yes, it’s my favorite quality about him… he usually has the expression of “my life is AWESOME!!” — so grateful and present. Of course he has also known serious tragedy, so I’m sure that’s part of his appreciation for it all.

      • reebism

The man could wear absolutely nothing and I would love him even more.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

      Hello, nurse!

Is it me or does he look like he’s hovering about a centimeter off the ground?

      • Lilak

Too right . . . That old David Blaine trick!   (which – really – lots more people than DB know how to do)

      • Winter_White

Did you see Inception?  Perhaps he appears to be floating because he is dreaming.  Or else this is T Lo’s dream about Joseph Gordon-Levitt wearing velvet plaid, and we’re all in the dream too, and then…I forget…um, spinning top?

    • Sobaika

I hate velvet (I have texture issues) but JGL might make me love it…

      • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

*Gasp* Just think how soft he is right now!  Can I pet him?  Please, please, please mommy can I?!?!?!

        • formerlyAnon

          I looooove velvet.

      • SaoirseLee

I’m the same! I thought I was just weird. Although I don’t mind silk velvet as much. Cotton velvet is a bit ennnh and fake-ass velvet/synthetic velvet is full on itchy teeth zone. See also, wet wool (aaaargh!).

    • MilaXX

Pretty sure the suit just needed to be adjusted from getting out the car because it was fitting like a glove when he came out on stage. Also the flash completely washed out the shirt. On tv it looked pale yellow. I wold give this a WERQ cause boyfriend looked GOOD!

      • EveEve

Pale yellow shirt would be better. And a soft leather tie would have put this ensemble in orbit.

    • gabbilevy

      “JGL is no mere mortal.”

All too true. That is some dee-vine sexiness right there.

    • Patricia Gillett

He looks very huggable in this as well as very sharp. Not easy things to pull off simultaneously but if anyone could do it, JGL could!

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

      WANT that SUIT!!!!!
(okay, in reality, I only truly want the coat.)
      He can keep the pants.
And is that a big thread or something stuck to his pant leg?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

You take the suit, I’ll take the man in the suit. Works for both of us.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Perfect! Though I appreciate him, he’s not quite my style. So you will get no arguments.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Ginny-Ellsworth/534496198 Ginny Ellsworth

I’m thinking it might be a peek of his sock. If he is wearing red socks, I will be even more impressed. Such a cutie pie!

    • Lilithcat

      It’s way too shiny.

    • janetjb

Gorgeous, I never thought I’d love a velvet suit so much.

    • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

I’m guessing that the illusion of asymmetry is caused by the sheer amount of static cling associated with a velvet suit.  This getup is amazing.  JGL can truly do no wrong.

      • boomchicabowwow

Totally with you on the static cling.  If you look closely, he seems to be standing very carfully and trying to keep movement to a minimum.  He even looks to be holding his arms out slightly away from his body.  That’s Swenton/Stephani level clothes wearing right thur….

    • Valdri8

I saw it last night on the tube, and I just knew that it would be posted today. It looked fabulous!

    • Thea Churchill-Robson

Is it brushed cotton corduroy rather than traditional velvet?   It doesn’t seem to hang as velvet would.
Either way, great look … makes him look even cuddlier too

      • sweetestsith

It might be a really plush cotton velvet? I’ve worked with one that I think was similar (though bright crazy green, not this beautiful lush plaid).

    • holzfaellen

      Holy crap.

    • Larkin21

      Gorgeous.

    • mhleta

My 17 y/o daughter is smitten with him. I totally get it. He’s got a wonderful retro quality about him and he certainly is owning this look here. Well done.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

He is certainly a dapper little morsel, isn’t he?

    • siriuslover

No it’s a total WERQ for me, especially given that the bent pant leg gives me a glimpse of his hot pink sock! Love him!

      • EditKitten

I kinda dig the sock. :)

      • dress_up_doll

I know! I noticed that funky little peek-a-boo sock and flipped. Just makes me love him all the more.

    • Ryan Williamson

Great fabric but this is making him look really curvy. An hourglass figure on a guy is so not hot.

      • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

         I agree!

    • mmc2315

      He’s showing off now.  Love.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maya-KC/537771651 Maya KC

      awwwwwww!

    • PeggyOC

That is Swinton level dressing there.  The number of men who can wear that suit, let alone make it look good can be counted on the fingers of one hand.  Snaps up, JGL.

      • Pants_are_a_must

Goddamn, invoking the name of SWINTON is…extreme. I’d say he’d earn his SWINTON stripes if he wore this suit in July.

        • PeggyOC

Nah.  If he wore this in July he’d get docked points for seasonal inappropriateness.

          • Pants_are_a_must

Yes, but he’d gain points for sheer brass balls (which, consequently, would probably be easier to have if you wear a velvet suit in July). I don’t know. To me, this seems to need an extra touch of crazy for it to be truly SWINTON.

    • nannypoo

Who would have ever thought he would grow up to be this? So handsome.

    • quiltrx

      As always, he looks glorious.

And you don’t even have to tell us it’s for Letterman when we see our old friend the dumpster in the background. :)

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Lol, is it a rule on Letterman that every celebrity must be photographed next to the dumpster?

        • formerlyAnon

I’ve often wondered what kind of a madhouse/sea of inappropriate signage the building entrance must be, that the dumpster is obviously the best and ONLY place for these folk to be photographed.

    • margaret meyers

I really cannot go for the nipped-in waist on men.  I know it’s a chance to do something fresh, but the hour glass is just not manly.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/J5QKZG5NFXQE3MLXFN3MAQDUTA Mary Stone

Rudolph Valentino was the king of the nipped waist suit, I think on the right guy it really helps to avoid the “boxy” effect.  Shows off a narrow waist to perfection, but the key is you have to have the narrow waist.

If anyone is insane enough to do a real (as opposed to fantasy) biopic of Rudolph Valentino, JGL is their man.  Seriously.

    • Matt Bailer

How on earth is this not a WERQ?

    • http://twitter.com/kerrymccombs Kerry McCombs

When I watched his segment I thought, T Lo will LOVE this! It looked GREAT on camera!

    • Kayceed

I absolutely love a muted plaid. I’d love to see more of it – on men and women.

    • Anathema_Device

I love the look, but the all velvet is a bit much. A pair of wool trousers with that jacket would have been fab.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Cleary/1201575213 Patrick Cleary

JGL is teeny and gorgeous. The teeny and gorgeous get away with so much more than the rest of us.

    • DTLAFamilies

I have to go against the grain on this one–the fabric looks stiff and bulky. He’s gorgeous, of course, but the suit is so stiff it looks like he could take it off and it would still stand on its own.

    • http://twitter.com/obscureobjects David Calder

Makes an appearance on Letterman? I think they meant “proposes to me.”

    • SpcilK

Gordon is dreamy; and Mc Queen looks great on him!  School is in session bitches, take note.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/C5V2EGUMM2GBH5YBQ74Y4SUOQM Maev

I used to say I was holding out for Cary Grant, but…this may have changed my mind.  This is two steps above handsome and hits debonair, and I thought men didn’t do that any more.  And he plays the guitar!

    • Pants_are_a_must

Yep. It’s just him and Gosling right now who take suit risks. And I find Gosling to be a douchelord.

      • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

I love the Gosling, but “douchelord” made me giggle; thanks!

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

On my computer, the pants look like plain black or blue velvet, not plaid.  I think I’d like this better if the pants really *WERE* a solid color, but I can’t tell right now what they are.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

The suit is beautiful, but i don’t get the love for the actor.  He always looks about 12 years old to me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

i would ditch my fiance for that.  and i’m pretty fond of him.

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

I’m dying to see those socks now. (I feel so Victorian saying that.)

    • poggi

      Cute as a bunny.

    • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

One of the most attractive things about him is his ability to make it look like he (obviously) likes fashion, but doesn’t take it at all seriously.  ADORABLE.

    • unbornfawn

Boy stars learn from Mr. Gordon-Levitt! He looks fantastic. I love the effort he puts in for the red carpet, and he looks like he is having fun too. Great suit, nice hair and a good shave! I am charmed. He needs to work on getting the knot of his tie sitting correctly before I can give him a WERQ. He is so close.

      • formerlyAnon

Yes. The asymmetrical knot is rampant even on fellas wearing thousands of dollars worth of well-fitted suit. Maybe they don’t want to be seen fussing with the tie (or having a minion check it?)

    • kolokOlchik

      Swoon!

    • BeeBeauNYC

I hope this is the beginning of a movement of more male celebrities, like Neil Patrick Harris, defaulting to suits instead of the casual crap most guys wear to peddle their movies.

      • formerlyAnon

Dream on. It’s a pleasant dream.

    • MzzPants

Mother of God, VELVET PLAID SUIT??!??   I want to have his fashion babies.

    • formerlyAnon

Love. But it’s the way the tie works which slays me.

If I could do that with pattern and color choices, repeatedly, I’d have a completely different life.

    • j_anson

I’m coming to grudgingly like JGL. Wearing a plaid velvet suit is pretty awesome.

    • Cathy S

I love that so much. He can really dress, he can.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Oh. My. Gawd. That plaid velvet is so beautiful, I just want to rub my face on it. I love the tie with it, and JGL’s really going to have to stop being so insanely adorable all the time or I will develop a terrible crush and my husband will get jealous.

    • http://www.facebook.com/aboutelle Ashleigh Boutelle

LOVE IT! LOVE IT! what colors are his socks? They look orange – which is fabulous. I think this should have been a WERQ, but I respect your appraisal as is. Besides, he gets a lot of WERQ’s!

    • kimmeister

This is his first public appearance in a suit in a long time sans the red button on his lapel.

    • kalisa

      That’s pretty bad ass. (But…is he…wearing…red socks?)

    • Vanja

The cut of the jacket makes him look hippy. Like Little Britain’s Andy would say: “Don’t like it”.

    • Scott Hester-Johnson

I just want to stroke him and call him George.

    • kathryn_dc

      Adorbs!

    • zelavie

I saw him on Letterman, and as soon as he walked out, I thought “Wow, I hope TLo gets these pics!”

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

The colors are perfect for him.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

      Rrrrooow!  It WERQs for me!

    • DominoEstella

LOVE.  I want this for my husband but we’ll have to settle for something H&M.

    • Hell Yes, I Would!

I hope he’s still in town, because I am ready to get my stalk on.

    • Lisa Kramp

Velvet suits bring back bad 70’s flashbacks for me, but he does look impeccable.

    • maggiemaybe

      Fan-freakin-tastic. Love it.

    • hape_dex

Damn, I can’t believe how hot this man is. His suits, the way he wears them, everything about him is perfect. He’s so happy just to be there, to be in front of a camera and show himself off. He knows he looks good but he doesn’t look cocky … he’s beautiful, I love to look at him, I wish I met met a man like him in real life.
I must sound like a creep but he’s a perfect example of the man of my dreams. I have a thing for skinny guys who look great in suits, slightly smaller than me, the kind of man I can hold in my arms, who snuggles up to my chest. *swoons*

    • Trisha26

Gorgeous! (I want to know what color those socks are based on the peekaboo left one.)

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

I’m going to call it a WERQ. Seriously–he is wearing the hell out of a plaid, velvet suit. Doesn’t get much more WERQ-y than that.

      • Pennymac

I see your WERQ and raise one of my own!

        • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

          Threesies!

    • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

How many guys can rock a plaid velvet suit and not look ridiculous?  As far as I can see, just this guy!

    • Zippypie

I’ll call it a WERQ.  Damn! That’s just a few blocks away and I missed seeing him look all dishy in velvet…. :(

    • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

He is nothing I usually find attractive in a man (short, slim, fancy, brown eyes), and yet I ALWAYS find him swoon-worthy. It’s a mystery. One I would be happy to do more research on (JGL, call me!).

    • frankystein123

Wearing velvet in September is always a little bit questionable.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/J5QKZG5NFXQE3MLXFN3MAQDUTA Mary Stone

OMFG. Way too cute.  The plaid works because it’s a subdued, plaid in rust/black(?), the suit works because it fits (save for the possible optical illusion issues that TLo have noted), the tie calls to the lighter rust color in the plaid, doesn’t fight with it, and is neither too skinny or too wide.  He’s tiny so he can wear allover velvet/velveteen without it adding 20 extra pounds to his midsection. Just gorgeous.  The shoes are a simple, classic shoe that’s not  focus-pulling, focus is on the suit where it should be.

It’s been in the 60s in September in southeastern MA where I am, so the fact that it’s velvet doesn’t bug me.   I like this and yes, it’s PhD level styling.  Distinctive without being crazy.

    • Candigirl1968

      Is it November already?

    • J. Preposterice

back when he was on Third Rock from the Sun, I was all “that kid is going to be BIG someday, if he does not do all the drugs”.  And lo.

JGL? Hot, cute, comedic & dramatic chops, and dresses like a champ.  GOOD JOB, person I inexplicably think of as a kid even though we are only 3 years apart in age!

    • lrhoff

      He is adorable!!!!!

    • crazygemini12

It isn’t that I don’t like the suit-I’d simply prefer to see him out of it. Often.

    • ccm800

He is in his physical prime with a perfect little shape for anything.

    • PhillipWilde

      Bow down, bitches!
