In or Out: Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab

Posted on September 11, 2012

We chose to “IN or OUT” this dress for two reasons:

  1. It’s an unusual dress
  2. This shade of green is ALL OVER the spring ’13 collections and we’re wondering what the ladies think of it.

Rachel McAdams attends the premiere of ‘To The Wonder’ during the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival in an Elie Saab gown paired with Tiffany jewelry.

Personally, we think that green is stunning. We’re somewhat less enthused by the overworked bodice. There’s an awful lot going on there and the missing sleeve looks like just that: a missing sleeve; as if she got it caught in the limo door and said “Ah, fuck it.” Also, the high neckline and trailing scarf down the back reads fairly mature to us.

It’s one of those gowns that make us gasp at first glance, but looks less and less fabulous once the initial dramatic impact wears off. And the damn thing needed to be hemmed.

But hey, pretty hair and face!

Vote Now!

IN! She’s gorgeous!

OUT! She’s here for her Lifetime Achievement Award!

Elle Fanning’s “Marcia Brady becomes a Rolling Stones groupie” getup was fiercely debated by the kittens, who ultimately voted it OUT.

The color is beautiful, but the cut is awful. It looks like some kind of horror movie where her dress has come alive and is strangling her. The fit is questionable too – baggy on top, and tight around the hips.

    • lovelyivy

Yup. She needs to be rescued from her dress. It could be a movie with Channing Tatum co-starring.

      • Rescue from the Dress 2: Electric Boogaloo.

        • librarygrrl64

Adding the words “Electric Boogaloo” to any sequel (real or imagined) will never NOT be hilarious and awesome to me.

          • Amy Ellinger

Totally agreed!!!  “The Secret of the Ooze” is a close second in hilarity.

    • Jill_3

Agree. Great color. But I unreservedly hate the dress.

    •  Totally agree. Gorgeous color but that cut makes my eye twitch. It’s what you would wear if your entire body is freezing… except your right arm. Maybe if she had an opera glove or something crazy going on on that arm it could be interesting.

      • LesYeuxHiboux

A Delia Deetz look! Love that idea.

    • LaylaSV

The dress needs to be packed off to Julianne Moore, forthwith. Granted, on JM the fit would be equally awkward but at least the style, color and sophistication would suit.

  • Ozski

Good color but I think it looks schlubby and can we please put a moratorium on the one-sleeve look? Please?

    • norseofcourse

Yes! I barely notice the rest of the dress because I just keep looking at that arm sticking out there all by itself.

  • Athenrein

I like the color and the drape but I have to say OUT just because of the sleeves. I really dislike the one-sleeve thing, and it’s even worse when one is long. If it were shorter and sleeveless it’d be in.

  • miscorrections

    Institutional hunter green? In.

“I live for the THEATAAAHHH” draperies? OUT.

  • cindy_lightballoon

I totally agree. That colour is absolutely beautiful but everything else is kinda meh. Imma have to go OUT on this one, the colour isn’t enough to save it.

  • I love the color, but the pulling across her hips is so distracting and making it almost look like it’s a different color in that area.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

wish the long sleeve would fall off, but still IN

  • poggi

It’s like a hot flash in dress form.  OUT.

  • IN!

hospital green! jokes aside, i like the colour.

i like the dress quite a lot. i think her right arm could have used a bracelet or a clutch. nothing too showy, just something to balance it out visually. her face looks fresh.

  • shirab

    Great color, confusing dress. Out.
What shoes would complement this? Maybe a boot on one side and a sandal on the other, to carry the theme through?

  • alyce1213

This is one really ugly Saab. Way too much going on, I mean, what the hell is with that neck and bodice and things hanging off every which way, and a train? And one shoulder/sleeve to boot.
As to color, I painted my living room a slightly deeper shade of that color a number of years ago, very nice, ’40s vibe. Not so sure about so much of it with this dress. May be better in smaller doses, or outerwear.

    Edited to add: OUT

  • In. The color is great, especially on her- look at her eyes! And even though the missing sleeve looks weird, it’s otherwise a very striking and flattering dress.

  • Alisa Rivera

I’ll be the outlier and say no to the color. What skin tone would you need for that color to be flattering? I don’t think it exists.

    • Lilak

You’ll be glad to know you’re not THE outlier . . . I’m with you:  Of all the possible shades of green in the universe, this one’s just, I dunno, discouraging.  Just a sort of Why? shade of green.  And I’ve never seen a fabric that enlivened it any.

I must confess, it’s the green I associate with my decades-ago unhappy affiliation with the Girl Scouts – heh.
But my opinion of the color predates (maybe helped doom?) my G.S. experience.

Anyway, back to the post at hand:  A big fat OUT (color + design issues TLo cited).

    •  Me too. That green is sad. It’s the color of the surgical scrubs on MASH. OUT. (And the dress is just schlubby.)

    • Cautiously Pessimistic

No, you’re not alone.  The color is really not the best shade of green, but green is a tough color for a lot of people.

    • Ooh how I hate this color. This was the exact shade of my school uniform as a girl — a drab, worn, desaturated, soulless green that clashed with every skin tone and hair color and made everyone look tired. Psychological warfare at its best. When I graduated I swore I’d never wear green again; I’ve come around to some shades since then but not to this one. Never this one. *melodramatic shudder*

    • VictoriaDiNardo

I’m not a fan of the color either, and especially for spring.  It just doesn’t read springtime to me – this looks like a holiday dress – put a sprig of holly at the neck and she’s really for the Xmas party!

  • Aly Light

That neck piece looks like she’s covering up an adam’s apple. Which makes it the most tasteful drag-wear I’ve ever seen. Ship it off to RuPaul. On Rachel, it’s an OUT.

  • Larkin21

I love the color and I love Rachel McAdams but the dress is just too much, and not in a good way. OUT. Sadly.

  • OUT, because that dress is ridiculous.  I am however ecstatic to hear that this green is back because it works so well with my skin tone…as opposed to friggin Pantone Orange.

  • ojosazules

Looks to me like she tucked her right sleeve into her waistband. Out.

    • ampg

Yes, in fact, I studied the pics for a while trying to decide if that’s actually what she did.  OUT, indeed.

Also, I like the green in theory, but I don’t think it works on her as a blonde.  As a brunette, maybe.

  • fallinseattle

OUT. Love the color, but that is too much dress for her. If it was on someone taller, perhaps they could pull it off, but it just seems way too heavy for her.

  • afabulous50

OMG this is horrid.  She has no neck – no shape.  She looks like an ugly green stick.  OUT!

  • BuffaloBarbara

Love the green–it’s one of my favorite shades–hate the dress.

  • Agree – great color, meh cut, and way too long.  In one of the pictures she’s looking down, probably worried she’s about to trip over it.

    • Kristin McNamara

Agree about the length. And more than just needing a good hem-job, I actually was hoping (pre-scroll) that it would stop at her knees. Seriously, position this page in your browser so the dress is only showing to her knees and it looks SO much better, in my opinion. Doesn’t SAVE it (I’ll never be on board with having half as many sleeves as normal) but it does improve it.

  • ringthing

She’s high on my Irrational Celebrity Love list and I really love this color, but the dress is ugly, so I have to vote OUT.

  • IN – because I love her, but you couldn’t pay me money to wear that dress. She still gets an IN though.

  • I love the green. I don’t love the material, which makes the dress looks like it was made out of cotton knit. Also don’t like the style. If you’re going to go faux thirties, cut out the excess.

  • mjude

OUT. do not like the one sleeve

  • lrhoff

    Yuck.  Out, needless to say.

  • Out, the color is good on her, but the dress is awful

  • PinkLemon

these are the types of ‘one sleeved’ dresses that don’t work. when the sleeve just looks cut off at the last second by the designer. OUT.

  • imperfectlaura

The bodice makes it look like one tug in the right place can leave the woman…exposed. I agree with you that it is overworked.  I like the green though.

I actually think this gown could work on Angelina Jolie.  It’s covered up which is something she goes for, but it’s not black and has some excitement to it, so I think people would like it more.

    On Rachel though…OUT.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Maybe my monitor is off but I hate this – ugly color and hideous dress.  It makes me feel like I’m choking when I look at it.

  • CMCH

Really dislike the dress, with the missing sleeve and the I’m-being-strangled neckline. But the color is gorgeous, and I’d snap up a top or sweater in that green.

  • Neptune6

Rachel looks quite striking, with impeccable hair and makeup, but the dress is honestly rather matronly-looking…I’m getting a Sunset Boulevard vibe.

    • amywinns

I hate the single sleeve, but agree that with matching long sleeves, it would be right into Old Hollywood Grandmother territory.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Love the color and I’m looking forward to seeing it next spring (hopefully the color makes it down to RTW), but hate that dress — at least the way she’s wearing it.  I don’t think that front scarf part was designed to be tucked into the waistband that way.

  • nancy

I love the color, it brings out her gorgeous eyes. The dress I hate, it looks like she took that missing sleeve and sort of draped it around her neck. That dress could lose about 20 yards of fabric and look much better! Altogether- OUT.

  • In? I wish the other sleeve were a 3/4 sleeve or a cap or something.

  • jennifervney

Out. I can’t get behind the missing sleeve.

  • kschwarting

It’s a really great color and I like Rachel McAdams a lot, going back to her “Slings & Arrows” days.  However, I echo the sentiments of the other bitter kittens that the dress itself is awful.  She’s better than that dress, although that green sure makes her eyes pop.

  • janetjb

Good color for her, but the dress is OUT.

  • granddelusion

Hate the dress, hate the color. Out.

  • DCSheehan

It looks like she rolled in a sale fabric bin. Out. To both the dress and that horrid colour.

  • Neptune6

Rachel looks striking, with impeccable hair and makeup, but the gown looks rather matronly.  I’m getting a definite Sunset Boulevard vibe, and that ain’t good.  OUT.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

dress is almost an anti-typical amalgamation of idiosyncrasies, some of which are so infrequently mixed up w/ one another that, were it less attractive, it wouldve ended its run gauntlet smack into discordance. the thing is, it’s also, of all things, pretty. so the high neck & the long scarfy thing & the grecian skirt side & the not quite beautiful color really work.

  • The color is amazing on her, makes her eyes look green, which I think they are blue?  The cut is a disaster.

  • kelsita421

OUT. it’s like she’s scarlet o’hara making a dress out of a tablecloth and ran out of fabric before she had two full sleeves. she means well… but… it’s just not working. nice color, though.

    • amywinns

She should have been more conservative with the length then, cause this is puddle-y. So the original tablecloth should have been plenty.

  • VicksieDo

IN! She’s always gorgeous to me.

  • Overworked, and personally I hate that Christmas tree green. OUT.

  • LLuL

Out, I think. She looks good in that color, but I’m not sure about the high neck on her. You’re right, it’s a bit overworked. I also think the dress is too tight across the hips. I think I see the panty line from her shapewear where the fabric is pulling.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

  • Out. There is not one thing I like except the actress wearing it. I hate the green, I hate the missing sleeve, I hate the matronly shape.

  • Anathema_Device

I think with the fussy bodice, this dress needs to shit or get off the pot where the sleeves are concerned. I’m not opposed to halfsies dresses, in theory, but this one doesn’t work for me. McAdams doesn’t have the presence to make me like something this odd, either.

Also, I like green and am glad it is showing up more on the runways, but this particular green is a bit…I don’t know…surgical scrub to me.

Okay, Out. Girl, that ain’t your dress.

  • Oh so very out. Love that color, HATE the bodice of the dress. Too many ideas vying for attention.

  • claudemtl777

The first thing I thought of, was  pine tree car freshener…I’d probably like it enough to make it an IN if it had both arms. As it is, with just one, its an OUT

  • Joyce VG

It’s making my eyes twitch. The dress is too overworked, the fit is not great (it’s pulling and gaping all over the place), the idea is tired and weird…OUT.  Pretty girl though, she can do better.

  • Elizabetta1022

She looks like she’s going to a Halloween party dressed as a pea pod. (Or maybe as a princess who emerged from a pea pod.)

    • Elizabetta1022

And by that I mean, “Out!”

  • Judy_J

That color of green is gorgeous, but the dress is just awful.  I hate the missing sleeve, and the floor-dragging length looks sloppy.  OUT.

  • BrooklynBomber

    1. Yes, it sure is!
    2. I don’t know – on my monitor it looks a little drab, more fall than spring, and just kind of eh. Maybe it’s better in person.

Also, OUT. I might like it if they find the missing sleeve and put it back. It’d have a sort of 1940s vibe.

  • Winter_White

It’s a color that those of us who were little girls in the 60s remember from our girl scout uniforms!  (Squint and picture a couple of embroidered badges sewn on the bodice…)  Does good things for Rachel’s eyes, though.

    • Lilak

Oh yay, I’m not the only one! (see post ~6 min. before yours … and I bet we’re not the only two!)

      • Winter_White

Lilak, I hadn’t seen your earlier post — and I must confess I never made it past Brownies.  (Mocha dress, orange tie, brown beanie.) But I would’ve been so happy if Rachel’s outfit had featured the best G.S. accessory:  the GENUINE LEATHERETTE coin purse.  🙂

  • All that draping on the front makes it look like she put on a two-sleeved gown, looked in the mirror and said, “You know what would make this look even better?  If I pulled my arm out of this sleeve and let it dangle down my front!”

But, even though I strongly dislike the color green, this color looks lovely on her.  Her hair and makeup are pretty too so I’m going to give her an IN.  I just can’t give Allie an out.

    • mountainFashionista

I vote out, but agree with you otherwise.

The sleeve doesn’t look like it’s missing — it just looks like her arm isn’t through it properly.  But it’s right there, dangling from the neckline across her bodice and tucked into the waistband…  Like a toddler’s wardrobe malfunction.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I like the color, but the gown itself looks unfinished.  Was Elie Saab only given 24 hours for this challenge?

  • TSkot

Mr. Saab forgot the term “edit” with this one; WAY too much going on.  OUT

  • Anna Tree

great color. terrible makeup and hair. OUT

  • Out! There are many elements that I like here, the overall effect is very nice BUT i cannot forgive any girl whose wearing one sleeve. I find it distasteful and distracting.

  • Judy_S

Love the green, hate the puddles and drips of fabric. OUT.

  • EEKstl

OUT because of the insane sleeve/no sleeve, which is a shame because if this were just a sleeveless halter-neck dress it would have been a for-sure IN.  Love love love the color.

    • MilaXX

agreed. Lose that other sleeve and the fact that this reads Fall cold be overlooked.

  • rissa42210

The color is nice.  The dress is not falling right, and it’s overwhelming her.  I like that she did something that doesn’t scream “LOOK AT ME! I’M SEXY!” like a typical ladystar.  If the dress fit just a little more in the armpit that has a sleeve, I would say in, but as it does not, OUT.  Also, hello crazy face!

  • Pretty hair and face!

  • G

I usually love Elie Saab.. but I hate this dress, and the whole one-sleeve thing has got to go!  OUT.

  • pugluv

luv luv luv the color….hate the dress

  • UGH. OUT*. It looks like those convertible dresses being hawked in a beat-up copy of Sky Mall, with the sleeve tucked into the waistband.  “WEAR THIS DRESS 12 WAYS!”

*IN only if she had a broken arm with a big-ass cast.

  • Cautiously Pessimistic

That gown is really confused.  Is it winter?  Is it summer?  Did she get caught in a revolving door?

I’m also not that fond of the green, but I have a narrow window of approval when it comes to green.

  • lilibetp

Love the color.  Almost matches her eyes.  I agree that the dress is stunning at first glance and then kind of un-grows on you.

  • teensmom99

OUT–cannot improve on what you said.  but since you ask, I like that color used moderately in a tweedy/woolly kind of  thing.  Not loving it here. and the hair color is totally ladies who lunch–at the mall in Long Island.

  • Jean-Luc Bresson

This is the dress you wear when you’re up to accept your 10th daytime emmy award.

  • moreteawesley

LOVE the color, not crazy about the dress from the waist up. It’s just too much. That sleeve kills me. I’d like it much better if it were just sleeveless.

  • meowing

Green is my favorite color, but not this green.  And, no to the 1-sleeve.

  • Violina23

Love the color, hate the dress. It looks like most of it got caught in the limo door..

  • OUT. Remove the other sleeve, maybe. Not loving the green. Too 1995, IMO. She looks washed out and elderly.

  • MilaXX

Love the color but this looks like a dress Julianne Moore would wear. The bow hanging in the front looks like when you take your bra off while wearing your shirt (think of the scene in Flashdance) and the bow is the sleeve hanging down, she noticed it as she was going out the door and and tucked it into her waist band. It feels weird for the sake of being weird. So it’s an OUT for me.

    • alyce1213

Yep, it’s a Julianne Moore dress.

  • schadenfreudelicious

color is great, dress is just silly…OUT

  • 3boysful

Color’s fine, but it would’ve been more stunning with a PAIR of sleeves and no back for the show of skin.

  • tallgirl1204

The green is too park ranger for me;  i.e., I get enough of that in my real life.  Admittedly, it is a little grayed down from park ranger green, but nonetheless…  Not crazy about the dress, but she gets props for not looking like everyone else.  For that alone I give her an “in.”

  • charlotte

Green is my go-to color and this shade sure is beautiful, but that dress is so OUT. It’s downright ridiculous.

  • OUT.  i love all shades of green, it’s my “signature color”.  but this shade, if used alone in a dull fabric, can go girl scout pretty easily. and the dress itself is just odd.  like she ripped the shoulder of her dress, so she just tucked the hanging sleeve into her waistband and kept on going.  odd for the sake of odd.

  • Jangle57

She;s gorgeous, the dress is ridiculous.  It’s like it has a split personality: half Hollywood, half Amish. I pretty much agree word for word your assessment: great color, stupid dress. OUT

  • MintaHallWriter

Love the color, love the silhouette. BUT…bodice really is overworked, and the hem is too long–a giant puddle.  I’d say this is an ALMOST-IN/NOT QUITE OUT.

  • Drab green, sleeve-falling-off garment.  OUT.

  • Tamara Hogan

That color screams Girl Scouts of America. Perhaps her achievement badges can be affixed to the arm?

  • j_anson

IN! I like. God, let this green show up everywhere, says the redhead who’s not been well-served by the color palettes of the last few years.

  • IN. But I would like it more if it had both sleeves or no sleeves at all.

  • Monabel

Dress is regrettable, despite the color, and WHERE is that Tiffany jewelry?

  • another_laura

On the fence about the color.  I’ll need to see it in a look that doesn’t make me wonder whether the sleeve was torn off when it got caught in the car door.

Oh, and it’s an OUT because of the stupid design. Sorry, it’s just stupid, to me.

  • kalisa

    It matches her eyes.

  • JuliaInBlack

OUT.  The sleeve looks like a mistake to my eyes… it’s a bug, not a feature.

I love that shade of green and wear it as much as possible, although I don’t think it’s one of those magical colors that has the ability to make a mediocre piece look better.

  • Daisy James

I’m all about the color, and her hair and makeup are nice, but the bodice just looks haphazard. Interesting isn’t the same as stupid. OUT

  • HobbitGirl

OUT. I love the color, but that dress looks like it’s strangling her.

  • This color is gorgeous, and Rachel looks beautiful from the neck up. But as much as I like the dress, there is too much going on. But because I don’t *hate* it, I’m giving it a tepid “in.”

  • Michael Owens

Her eyes matched the color perfectly, but I entirely agree with your assessment. She should never have let herself be shot from the right what with all the dress mechanics so clearly in evidence.

  • butterflysunita

OUT.  Looks like she forgot to put her arm in one sleeve and left it hanging.  As for the color, I think it’s pretty.  I was pleased when you said it’s all over the spring 2013 collections because I bought a silk tank top in that exact shade a couple of months ago.  I am inadvertently trendy!

  • MLB

She’s beautiful but I hate the color.  It reminds me of the pillows in our lake house circa 1995.

  • Out. Gorgeous gorgeous color but the missing sleeve is just stupid. So stupid. Derelict line from Zoolander stupid.

  • lesmaha

Out. Love the color, but that missing sleeve is driving me crazy.

  • kimmeister

In just because it’s a change from the usual, and the color is beautiful.  The dress would be better without the scarfy thing in front tucked into the belt.

Although the green phase I’m going through is emerald green, this shade is still lovely.

  • She’s too short to pull that dress off even if it were hemmed correctly.  The color is great and it’s one of “my” colors, but the one-armed thing is highly unnecessary. She looks like the dress swallowed her. OUT.

  • ChelseaNH

OUT.  There’s too much dress to that dress, in so many ways.  But yes, great color and great on her.

  • MLB

In, although I really dislike the color.  It reminds me of the pillows at our lake house from 1995.   Hunter green, burgundy, and gold EVERYWHERE!

  • OUT.  The sleeveless side is an unremarkable evening gown; the sleeve side is from the costume design of *Working Girl*.  (She even has serious hair.)

  • Lilithcat

It looks as though she took one sleeve and draped it across the bodice.

  • Out – It looks like she tucked the missing sleeve into the front.

  • GorgeousThings

I’d have to go with OUT. Like you say, that sleeve just looks… unfinished. It’s a very 80s look. And while it looks good on me, I can never wear that green again because it was the color of my Ursuline Academy high school uniform. Ever since then, I can’t wear green unless some sugar daddy gifts me with emeralds.

  • littlemac8

OUT  Your dress called and it wants it’s sleeve back.  Agree gorgeous color and good on her but I can’t abide the one sleeve look.  Bah!!!

  • nannypoo

    I really hate this dress.

  • I like the color. The arm “treatment” shall we say makes it look like she’s not done putting on the dress.

  • CQAussie

OUT.  Great colour tripped up by poor execution on the actual dress itself.  That missing sleeve is making my eye twitch.

  • Lurve that color, would look great on me.  Hope to see some affordable dresses in that shade soon.

  • SapphoPoet

Color is gorgeous. But I really dislike dresses with one sleeve–always looks like a mistake. And the rest looks fussy and too long. So….out.

  • librarygrrl64

OUT. Waaayyyyy too complicated and looks a mess. I do, however, like the color. Green is my favorite color overall, and this shade is lovely.

  • lill5

    Out. Horrible dress.

  • pookiesmom

It looks to me like she took scissors to a really expensive sheet and wrapped it haphazardly around her body. OUT.

  • Valdri8

The zipper looks as though the dress was purchased at TJ Maxx

  • tereliz

Out. Amazing color, cray-cray cut. No thanks.

  • Margaret Gaggioli

The color is nice but the missing sleeve and bodice make it an out for me.

  • LaFortunaStudio

Love the color. Anyone know the Pantone#? The dressmaker only had one sleeve to fit and couldn’t get it right ? A train which must be managed is another flaw here.

  • marilyn

Out.  Color is not good for her.  She is too pale.  The missing sleeve is awful.  The rest of the busy stuff up there is not helping.   This is an example of why a star should not take every dress offered to her. Yikes.

  • call_me_schmeg

weird but not in a fabulous way. with a tired sigh, i say OUT.

  • IN
gee, maybe I’m alone, but I love this dress.  Some jewelry would have been nice though.

  • GTrain

Love the color, hate the dress. OUT

  • Love the color, hate the dress. REALLY hate the one-sleevedness!

  • Out, the color is sublime, but it looks like she had trouble dressing herself and the “missing” sleeve is actually slung across the front of her person.  It’s off-putting.  No, thanks.

  • trisker

Hate the cut of the dress, which looks huge and has way too much going on.  Unusual green color is lovely, though.  OUT

  • I really wish it had the other sleeve. But, IN, because the color makes her eyes look GORGEOUS.

  • Didi Rami make that dress? Seriously. The color is so him. And so is the draping. And the ridiculous lack of a sleeve element thrown in for good measure. Ok. Maybe that last part wasn’t him. Sorry folks but I am not seeing it. I think this gown is fugly and the color is matronly to go right along with the draping. I know a very old hotel where the carpet is that color.

  • altalinda

The dress is out and the color is OUT!!!!!!

  • Scarlet39

Love the color, but there are just too many elements to it.  It looks overworked and overdesigned.

  • lalahartma

Meh. It doesn’t thrill me.  I don’t like the color and it does look matronly.

  • Samantha Irene

IN for the color (which is quite good on her as well), OUT for the dress.

  • jw_ny

It looks like she tucked the missing sleeve into her waist band.  There’s just too much fabric around her neck, down her front, and puddling around her feet…all that excess fabric and not enough for another sleeve.  ack.

I’d like this better if both sleeves were missing.  The color…eh…doesn’t thrill me.

  • snarkykitten

    did Anya design this dress?

    • Magatha

Don’t think so. The green doesn’t look radioactive enough. Still, I’d have gone with the blood larva and burlap.

  • margaret meyers

Spruce?  It’s reminding me of that crayon color.

  •   Shapeless schmatta rendered in Girl Scout Uniform green..  OUT

  • leftcoastpickle

Out, buy a sleeve! Or better yet, cut off the other sleeve. I don’t love this colour of green, but it does look good on her. She’s so pretty.

  • Reminds me of Dynasty. YUCK!

  • Lisa Kramp

Beautiful woman, lovely color fabric, but a fucking ugly dress. OUT.

  • Zippypie

Love the color but that dress is shit.

  • PastryGoddess

not shout worthy, but it just does her no favors. However, she can wear that color green for the rest of her life and I’ll be happy

  • OUT. Love the color, but the missing sleeve should have been there, or it should have been a sleeveless gown.

  • ASK26

Not in love with that particular shade of green. Close but some how off

  • DylanCurtis

  • jmorino08

Out! It looks like the right sleeve tore and she just tucked it into the sash in front. Such a weird, weird effect. And I do not care for this green on her, but it’s a lovely shade over all.

  • unbornfawn

Yes, I like the color. OUT for the look, The bodice looks like someone made one of the sleeves too long and instead of putting her arm in it she wrapped it around her neck. It is one of my pet peeves when the lady stars wear a fabulous designer dress and don’t have it hemmed properly.

  • tired_mommy

OUT. Can’t get over the missing arm.

  • frannyprof

Out. Love the color, but overworked, what with the missing sleeve, long hem, floppy sash, etc.

  • lizajane1776

Out. Wonderful color for her, but the single sleeve is just BAD.

  • OUT. I hate that dress. I hate the missing sleeve look in general – I had the same caught-in-a-car-door thought. I hate how the bodice doesn’t fit well. I hate the bodice in general, actually. It looks like the blouse a matronly school secretary would wear. And I’m not sold on the colour, but I have issues with green – I think it can look too institutional too easily and this might veer into that category.

  • CatherineRhodes

OUT. This dress just looks stupid.

  • guest2visits

She’s always very pretty – but I hate the dress. The color on my screen is a plastic, polyester looking shade of putty-jade.
Seriously; wasn’t this one of the original Play-Doh colors?  I would like to see something in a hunter, or forest green. Even a
camo, or military green.    The dress itself looks suffocating and matronly.

  • I love the color, but that dress is RIDICULOUS. Out.

  • OUT. Can’t get over the missing sleeve. I could like that shade of green in some cases.

  • Yes to the color, no to the dress. So, OUT.

  • E_bee

Out. This looks like half of one of my mother’s bridesmaids’ dresses from her Christmas 1968 wedding. I like lots of greens, and maybe it’s the picture, but this green looks like old couch to me.

  • phrenk

IN, though I’m not sure I’d like this dress on anyone else.  I love that shade of green with her eyes.

  • INish-ly OUT – how’s that for ambivalent? Love the color and the visual interest upon first glance, hate the fussiness and the too-long hem. Hem tape, ladies! It’s a thing!

  • FashionableLena

Too much fabric, and she is not statuesque enough to pull it off.

  • Amy

She needs to keep wearing that color but stop wearing scary half finished bridesmaid dresses.

  • Oh, HELL no!  The color is the only good part, and I don’t even think it’s *that* great of a shade of green.  And the rest of the dress is just crazy.

  • Magatha

Love the color. Hate the missing sleeve, and the cut makes her look like a no-neck monster. Which, of course, she is not. Give me a pair of scissors and about 15 minutes and everything will be fine.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I love this green. Picked up a smart little jacket in this shade this past spring (it helps that it looks good on me). It’s a forgiving shade of green, as opposed to a harsher lime or kelly. It’s lovely with her skin (though I think it would look even better with her natural brunette hair).  I wish the gown was sleeveless, it would be a flat-out winner in that case. As it is…OUT by a hair.

  • Laura Osborne

Hate the color. The dress is pretty, otherwise. But its a little “old” looking for her.

  • I like everything except the mismatched sleeves. I feel it would look so much better if, when getting out of the limo, the car door ‘accidentally’ catches on to the other sleeve and rips it off so it becomes a sleeveless dress.

  • LambeeBaby

I like it despite the kind of overworked aspect. I like green, but think this shade looks a bit too muted.

  • Ruth Preston

Poor Annabelle. They managed to get all but her right arm into the shelter before the twister hit. They never did find out what happened to Pa.

  • Kato16

Love the green, hate the missing sleeve.

  • Call me Bee

Actually, I think it would be a better dress if both sleeves were gone. And not a big fan of the color. Kind of washed out. I like my greens more saturated.

  • Blech – out

  • HATEHATEHATE one-sleeved dresses!!  But this color is pretty even if it’s not easy for everyone to wear.

  • sleepycat

Like the green, but the dress is a distaster area

  • demidaemon

I agree on the color. However, I don’t like the fabric. I find it too matte for the effect. Also, that bodice is pretty horrific.OUT.

  • In, because I think the color is divine, the dress is interesting, and she looks beautiful.  I do think it looks a bit like she took one sleeve off and tucked it in the front of her waistband.

  • quiltrx

OUT.  I love the color.  And I normally love every Elie Saab ever, but this is a misstep.  I think the heavy look of the fabric (as opposed to something ‘floaty’) and the solid color make it read too much “Grand Dame Trying to be Edgy.”

  • Ann

I’m not a fan of the color, and the sleeve is just all kinds of wrong. She should have torn both off when the one got stuck in the limo!

  • Corazon Nunez

I’m pretty sure I’m alone here, but I actually like it. It is a little overworked, but not that much. I think if she had another sleeve it would have come off as really heavy. Also, makeup and hair are gorgeous. Love the color too. It goes well with her eyes.

  • I’m gonna have to go with OUT on this one. I feel like her sleeve is tucked in her belt, and it bugs the heck out of me. Rachel here knows how to wear clothes and even she can’t save this one.

    Love the color though.

  • LuxuryLime

LOVE the green, loathe the gown. OUT.

  • cap1764

  • ccm800

IN but that bare arm BEGS for a bauble

  • l_c_ann

Because my first thought was she’s wearing it backwards; then it appeared she had it on right and it wouldn’t get any better.

Color alone doesn’t merit an “in”.

  • Allison Woods

Everything is wrong with that dress, including the color.

  • TieDye64

So fucking Lifetime Achievement OUT. The cut of that dress is gawd awful. So bad the color can’t save it.

  • Dawnnewday

She looks like she’s pulling the sheets off part of her body in order to achieve an optimal sleeping temp. Sorry to disagree with the almighty TLo but the color reminds me of camo. Also not flattering to very many complexions. Don’t even get me started on how pedestrian Tiffany’s jewelry has become! Tiffany’s has slid down to a pathetic, simpering, shadow of its former self.

  • aristida_girl

Out…the missing sleeve ruins it for me,love the color though

  • NCDFan

In. She looks fabulous. Her waist looks tiny. And I disagree about the sleeve. With two sleeves, she would look like she had huge shoulders.

  • OUT on the dress, and I wish she’d go back to being a brunette.

  • DesertDweller79

Hate the fabric explosion in the bodice. And the way it looks like it is missing a sleeve.

However, I love the color. This would be a wonderful color on me.  So, I hope it trickles down to my price range quite fast.

  • The style is the Harvey Dent of dresses, but that green is beautiful. Out.

  • RzYoung

I like the green but I’m not sure I like it on her…in fact until she ditches that AWFUL blonde hair I’m going to OUT everything she wears. If she had any other hair colour this might work.

  • Aurumgirl

The colour is great–especially on the red carpet, it should probably be noted as THE colour to wear to truly make  you stand out there.  But the dress itself looks like it’s eating her.  I hate the fact that with all that fabric, it’s wrinkling all over her lap.  It looks cheap.  This girl can wear anything but she really should have her stylist be more picky.

  • patticake1601

This dress is the equivalent of sticking one leg out of bed when you get a little hot. OUT!

  • AnneElliot

I agree with TLo.  Too busy at the neckline, and the missing sleeve looks. . . forgotten.  It doesn’t look asymmetrical, just unfinished.  It would look better if they ripped the other sleeve off too.  OUT!

  • PeggyOC

The color is awesome and I will welcome its trickle down from the runway to clothes that the rest of us will wear.  The dress is hideous.  And she’s still wearing that frizzled blonde mess on her head. Go back to brunette, Rachel.  You’re a gorgeous brunette.  Out.

  • No sleeve! OUT. Color’s stunning though.

  • Sharyn McHenry

    Dress, ugh.  Color, ugh.

  • Agree on the colors, but it’s all just working so hard. OUT

  • The rottweiler ate my sleeve is all I see with this.  The fabric looks like jersey knit to me in the photo. It just doesn’t work for me at all on any level.  OUT.

  • bittykitty

i love green, and this shade is beautiful… agree about the dress though, it needs 3 toy poodles and the wearer calling everyone daahhhling.

  • I love the color and think the dress is unique. She makes it work. IN.

  • That is an ugly dress… Yep, it’s a very bad dress. OUT.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Love this shade of green. It’s bringing out her eyes like crazy.
Agreed that the dress itself is just too complicated for its own good. The only reason I’m giving her an IN is because her body is still managing to look smoking hot, even with all that hanging fabric and that’s an accomplishment.

  • Verascity

I think that color is made for brunettes, personally.

  • Haley Buchanan

I LOVE the color and I actually love the dress as well.  I wear that color all the time so I’m excited hear that there will be more of it to wear.  As for the cut, I think it’s interesting, and it’s thoughtful enough what with the business of the fabric mostly being on the opposite side to the extra sleeve and balancing it out.  Not for a normal woman to wear to a normal event, but I always appreciate when red carpet wear is a bit on the odd and fussy side.

  • melanie0866

Out, out, out.  Yuck.  Golden Girls.  Awful color. Missing sleeve is just stupid.

SHE is so pretty, and her eyes look lovely in that color. It’s the dress I hate.

  • LuluinLaLa

I think the color is great, but I wouldn’t wear it so close to my face. And I don’t know if it’s the color or the fabric, but the bottom hangs like a set of heavy drapes. I’d say OUT. And I love RaMcA.

  • Kristy Evans

I do love that color, but the missing sleeve is egregious.

  • Cathy S

In for the color, out for the dress. She looks lovely but that dress–I can’t get behind that dress.

  • Introspective

ooh no. girl bye. that is all.

  • formerlyAnon

In. This is so ALMOST in every way, that I am going to nudge it over the line if that’s what it takes.

I think the bodice would be beautiful if arranged in the perfect drape – that none of these photos show said perfect drape means that the full impact of the dress is probably impossible to achieve on a moving human. That hand-on-hip pose does something awful to the bodice AND makes it look as if the dress is too wide at the shoulder. (Maybe it is.) So, fail. But almost.

If she’d put on some gorgeous cuff and arranged the way the scarf/tie end down her back met the neck over her shoulder more softly so there was a really minor but fuller effect rather than a spare “v”, I think the bare arm would be more appealing.

Also, I do think the dress might have been hemmed a little bit, even if the super long part is supposed to be there as some sort of demi-train.

I LOVE the neck of this dress and I’m going to hunt for a photo of it on a model because I really believe that it’s almost gorgeous, but that it might be impossible to move normally in it and have it remain so.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Hate the color!  That’s first.  Definitely NOT a spring color – maybe fall or winter, but not spring.  Second, hate the gown!  It looks like she took her arm out of the sleeve and wrapped it around her neck and then tucked it into her bib, or something.  Not crazy about the hair OR the makeup – in fact, she looks a little cray cray in the closeup.  I wish she’d go back to her darker (natural) color.  All in all, OUT.

  • Let’s all point out how the dress matches her eyes. Too matchy or just beautiful?

  • zelavie

Out, but this is based entirely on personal preference (as opposed to more universal measure, such as fit or mismatched shoes).  I kinda hate that color – it reads very mid-90s to me.  And that missing sleeve just looks like an accident.  If the sleeve wasn’t missing, it would be a completely dowdy dress.  Just overall, no.

  • Fabulous dress, pretty lady, but I don’t get the Sharon Stone hair or eighties makeup. Still, IN!

  • oohsparkley!

Out  The one sleeve thing bugs me.

  • h2olovngrl

Cleary, the missing sleeve is right there, tucked down into the front of the bodice! She just forgot to put it on correctly!

  • Winter on one side, spring on the other side, and all while standing in a sage green puddle!  Strange, and not in a good way.

Not my green, but that’s not why I’m voting this OUT!

  • lucasuk82

In – it’s lovely color, and a great color on RM, who can looked washed out.  The hair was a good choice with the high neck.  I’d like it more if it were just sleeveless, and a bag would be nice, but she looks good and confident in it.
I’m not a lady, but I love this color – somewhere between jewel and natural.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Hate the bodice and the extra sleeve. OUT.

  • Lisa Dugan

Out unfortunately.  She’s so beautiful but the dress is too much too much too much.  Color is great.

  • Out. I agree about the color, but there is just too much going on with that dress for it to be an in.

  • Out.

  • Pterodactyl111

IN. Love love love that color. The top is a little wacky, but in.

  • Judih1

Lifetime Achievement Award -OUT. Love the comment about the sleeve getting caught in the limo!

  • Out, sadly.  The only positive is the color, everything else is a big old WTF?  And the bodice looks like the missing sleeve just ripped off and she tucked it into the waist.

Also, anyone who can make a dress that’s pulling across Rachel McAdam’s tiny, tiny hips but also three sizes too large in the bust, must use Barbie as their proportion guide.

  • This is old-lady green.  But at least it’s interesting.  The dress is terrible in every other respect.

  • bitterk

Maybe it’s my monitor but this looks like emerald green.  My least favorite green.

  • Color is fantastic, but it’s a bit much of the muchness with that arm thing, isn’t it? I mean, only Flo-Jo can really pull off the one-limb coverage thing.

    Out, in my opinion.

  • Veronica1022

Why are they revisiting the Tara portiers? Out!  And that color looks hard to wear!

  • Vic

Not liking it. But think she looks fab from the neck up.
