In or Out: Jessica Alba in Valentino

Posted on September 14, 2012

Darlings, real quick:

Jessica Alba attends Self Magazine’s ‘Women Doing Good Awards’ in New York City in Valentino.

Is this chic in a Patsy Stone kind of way or is it just too much going on and making her look older than she is? Also, what the hell does “SELF WOMEN DOING GOOD” mean? It sounds a little dirty.

Vote Now!

IN! Patsy Stone!

OUT! Edina Monsoon!

The Precious Unborn Fawns were fairly united in deciding that, if this was 1975 and she was selling Avon, Amy Adams’ dress would be fine, but since it’s not and she isn’t, she’s OUT.

OUT. I just can’t with it.

  • aeg66

Out. The skirt looks like a damn Vera Bradley pattern (scary chills) with sequins.

  • Lisa Kramp

Out. Too busy. And God help us all, WHY are bow blouses back????

    • Vickiefantastico

I have no idea. Some fashions need to go away permanently. And, OUT.

  • schadenfreudelicious

it’s far too “ladies who lunch” , she’s too young to dress that matronly….OUT till she hits 50 plus then it’s an in….

    • kschwarting

Matronly is exactly the word I would have used for it.

    • mom2ab

I am 50+ and its too old for me…OUT

      • Judih1

DITTO! I’m 55 and it is too old for me… O.U.T. (and its ugly, don’t care if it is Valentino

    • snarkmeister

She looks like a bedazzled librarian to me.

  • kimmeister

In.  Yes, it’s fussy but somehow she’s pulling it off.

  • NicholasGirling

I feel like she has been much improved lately but there is too much going on. OUT.

  • Trisha26

Out. The close-ups look much better – but I’m not looking at the dress then, just her pretty face.

  • teensmom99

Can I say OUT, Patsy Stone?  As noted, too ladies who lunch for someone her age.

  • joe_tey83

    Can do without the bow.

  • Out. Too much going on and wth is the bow and collar??  Looks like a Christmas decoration.  If she had gone with a simple black tank/cami on top, would be pretty. Love the skirt with the shoes & purse. But the shirt, with the bow? I just can’t even…

  • In.  I don’t feel like I SHOULD like it, but I kind of do.

  • jw_ny

There’s a lot/too much going on with the prints, stripes, sheers, big ass bow… my eyes don’t know where to focus…can’t focus.

That hair is…just…odd, but her makeup is very pretty.

  • MissMariRose

IN. I hate collar bows but somehow, she is pulling this off.

  • Call me Bee

It certainly makes her look older than she is.  It’s a kinda cool dress though…for a Midwestern business woman such as myself.   Which automatically makes it an OUT.

  • nannypoo

Are you kidding me? It’s horrible. And have these sleeves with the puffy cap made an unfortunate comeback? God help us.

  • MintaHallWriter

you know, when I first looked at this, I hated it, but the longer I looked, the MORE I liked it. So…IN

  • Corazon Nunez

Aaalmost pulling it off. I’m nice, I’ll give her an IN.

  • Rand Ortega

Too matronly. Lee Radziwill or Barbara Walters would totally rock that look. OUT.

  • Anna Tree

Love Valentino in general but that look is way too old for Jalba. OUT

  • OUT. Aging and unflattering. As much as I don’t like her, she does usually dress pretty well, but not this time.

  • Zippypie

OUT!  It looks like some of the horrid sheer 70’s dresses I’ve been seeing on eBay go for $1. *shudder*

  • Sara__B

In. Bow, surfeit of stripes, and all. But don’t try this at home, bitter kittens!

  • In.  She looks beautiful and sophisticated.

  • janetjb

I wish she had only worn one piece, either the blouse or the skirt.

  • There is something about those stripes (and her arms down at her sides) that makes her look like she’s tied up and ready to be thrown on a train track.  Stylishly of course

  • unbornfawn

    OUT. Too much going on.

  • Out. The bow was the nail in the coffin.

  • Deedles

    “Workin’ 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin’…”

    • Alisa Rivera

Yes! Which makes it an in for me.

  • tallgirl1204

    Helen Mirren’s dress.

  • It’s definitely Patsy but also makes her look older.

  • natalia osiatynska

Out. It’s full-on office Christmas party. But since it has something of mourning garb about it, in addition to something of the holiday season, maybe it’s office-Christmas-party-soon-after-the-death-of-the-CFO’s-wife?

  • CPK1

    In. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!

  • CQAussie

These are 2 separate pieces that probably look great paired with something else but together?  Terrible.  Also: I can’t stop staring at the big bow around her neck now.  Cute shoes though.

  • The pussy bow just killed it for me. OUT.

  • lesmaha

  • OUT. She looks like a secretary circa 1985. A secretary that just rolled out of bed.

  • Valdri8

    Out – patsy would never

The dirty version would be “women doing self good”

    • Shawn EH

I weep for modern grammar, I really do.

  • Kirsten Henry

  • OUT. It’s not all that flattering, and it’s VERY aging.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

IN. It’s ladies who lunch, but all the boho pattern and texture keeps it from going too matronly. Skating the fine line between coverage and frump with aplomb.

  • Pants_are_a_must

What I’m not loving is the fit, not the patterns. She pulls off the patterns. Giving her an IN for that.

  • Kim_W60

  • MilaXX

I’m assuming it’s a SELF magazine promo  to support women in one of those nominate the woman in your life who you think has done good type of thing.  I like her look and I think it’s appropriate for the occasion. IN

  • Jangle57

It looks too too, I don’t know, schoolteacherish?  Office workerish?  Not that many schoolteachers or office workers wear Valentino.  Sort of like Melanie Griffith in Working Girl.  Jessica, you can do so much better.  OUT

  • kcarb1025

The sleeves are the worst part of it.

  • sleepycat

    hate it OUT!

  • i like it but i don’t think it’s the dress for her? but yeah i’ll give her an IN anyway

  • understateddiva

Hm, the bow is a little ridiculous, but like the ladylike vibe works for me.  The fact that she has the most effortlessly relaxed smile EVER helps a lot.  IN.

  • It would look quite awesome on Patsy Stone, but on Jessica Alba..not so much.

  • lizajane1776

In! Complex, stylish (even though I hate “pussy bows”). She looks great!

  • ojosazules

It’s very proper and ladylike, and a little mature, but it really seems like she means it, like that is the look she is going for. I don’t love it, but she seems happy, so In.

  • bailey debruynkops

  • trisker

Out.  Just way too much going on for this pretty pretty girl.

  • luciaphile

I have fairly conservative tastes in fashion, but this looks fussy and matronly to me. The length, waist, shoulders, and bow are all extremely unflattering on her. It’s not a good print. Out.

  • TSkot

Sure it’s a little ladies-who-lunch, but it’s also Jessica Fucking Alba!  Look at that face!  IN

    • Shawn EH

Her face looks great, true. Girl has always known how to smile!

  • It’s very late 70s to me……in sort of?

  • quiltrx

OUT.  It’s just too much foofaraw in one look.

  • IN!! I love it but the comments now have me wondering if something is wrong with me.

  • I literally cringed. OUT.

  • Out! you can look 60 when your 60.

  • j_anson

Mildly out. Too busy. And I’m guessing it should be read as “SELF: Women doing good.”

  • TieDye64

So OUT. So very Patsy Stone. Waaaaaay too mature for her.

  • out. wouldn’t be as awful if it didn’t have that bow…

  • CatherineRhodes

IN. Very appropriate for the event.

  • demidaemon

Um, no. Fussy and, since it is almost midnight, too seizure inducing at this time. OUT.

  • hey! everyone, look over there!

    *while everything is looking away*

i like it. in. shhhhh don’t tell.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

that dress wouldve been terrible in 1975. in fact, it wouldve even been worse.

this dress is perfectly fine. i think she kind of likes looking less showy some of the time, now that she has a settled life which includes small minors. then again, i also like some of what edina monsoon wore. then again, i dont see this as having much to do w/ that.

  • OUT. Like the skirt, the top looks frumpy, although in a very fancy way….

  • lrhoff

This outfit is appropriate for the venue.  It’s much more businesslike — and it should be!  I like it.

  • DCSheehan

Out. That witchy shoulder look is horrible. What’s that shoulder thing called anyway. Whatever it is, I’ve always hated it.

  • pookiesmom

Ew, OUT! She looks like a politician’s wife at a holiday party in 1968. Who got dressed in the dark.

  • marilyn

Out.  This is not Edina Monsoon, but her mother.  This is what the granny wears out to dinner for the special family occasion.

  • In. I kinda love it.

  • ChelseaNH

OUT.  Too much.  I could take the skirt if the blouse were unadorned, but there’s no salvaging the blouse.  What is with all the horizontal wickety-wack across the bust lately?

    • leftcoastpickle

I was thinking the exact same thing! Those horizontal lines are a distracting design element. Someone else who i can’t recall had the same parallel lines on their chest the other day, I think that was also a Valentino. Stop it!

  • OUT.  I would like either the blouse or the skirt alone, with something simple.  Together they’re a little eye-searing, and they don’t really look like they should go together.

Also, I wore floppy bows in the 80’s in law school.  Never again.  It tips almost any look into “out” territory.

  • alyce1213

IN. I like this dress — it’s smart and knows what it’s doing.  Appropriate for her at this “non-sexy” event.

  • ccm800

OUT as hell. WTH is wrong with this chick??

  • crash1212

IN. Very lady like, but not boring. Even the bow doesn’t make me gag.

  • Nazzzy

    In. J’adore.

  • Bozhi

In.  Not her best look, but better than most others manage to achieve.

  • fashionablylate

The waist area is problematic, but I’m still digging it – IN.

  • Out. Crafts teacher.

  • Hard to say. The hair is awful, but I kind of really like the dress. I’m just not sure if I like it on her. I’ve always thought that Jessica Alba needs a little edge to prevent her from looking sugary sweet.

  • e m

Top half In, Bottom half Out. A more youthful skirt is needed here. Overall OUT.

  • charlotte

Out. I like the skirt though.

  • DaveUWSNYC

Waist up and shoes are ok…but needed a less attention-pulling skirt. OUT.

  • Scarlet39

It’s just too much look for her.

  • i kinda like it because reasons.  In.

  • DinaSews

Can’t get past the bow.  OUT.  A rare misstep for her.

  • Carrieanno

IN.  So nice to see a young actress not doing the “legs crossed, I’m so badassed and bored” pose/attitude with boobs hanging out. She’s wearing it beautifully.  Total class.

  • IN. She looks cute and it all works for me.
EXCEPT – Jessica Alba, you’ve had that ombre hair for years now, and it’s boring and I don’t think it has ever looked as good as you seem to think. Give up on trying to prove you can pull off Sue Storm. You can’t. Just go brown, please, it’ll look so much more refreshing. And that also goes for your big sister Rose Byrne.

  • Out. To busy for anybody, anywhere, ever. And the shape makes her look like a potato.

    • That was gonna be my wording exactly – it’s just too busy.  Out.

  • IN Patsy!

  • Shawn EH

Oh sweetie no! Frumpy, not a look that goes with Ms. Alba at all. I don’t think even removing the pussy bow and substituting a black pencil skirt would help. OUT!

  • leftcoastpickle

    Out, grandma dress.

  • MaryAtRealityTea

Oh dear God – OUT!  A pussy bow. Just stop right there. Brad Goreski should be ashamed of himself.

  • out.

  • Monica Valbuena

IN!! She took a risk and I think she looks gorgeous.

  • Tamara Hogan

I think this dress ages her a good quarter century. Out.

On second thought, I think it ages her a half century.  Still out.

  • I like it!

  • OUT. That much tinsel and froofroo is the antithesis of chic.

  • blondie65

sorry but out. want to like it but it is just too overdone or matronly or something…almost like it should be two different looks.  The top paired with skinny sexy pants or plain skirt maybe.  Not sure what could be done with the skirt…but something much much less.

  • julesj

Forget about “Women Doing Good,” this is “young woman doing old-lady!

  • MissAnnieRN

  • turtleemily

Out. The blouse needs to be with skinny pants. The proportions are wicked off.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OUT it makes her look old and also I HATE HATE HATE the top shoulder seam on that dress.  I know they did it in the 30’s but it makes me squirm with a kind of embarrassment.  I just want to snip those little poofs completely off.

  • Candigirl1968

The blouse with a black skirt might have worked, but it’s too busy and makes her look like she’s auditioning for one of those movies where you start as a teenager and then play the same character as an old lady by wearing bad face prosthethics and a slightly askew grey wig.  OUT.

  • Oh no. That is straight up church-lady. OUT, vile demon and flee thee back to the KMart from whence you sprang!

  • In!! Monochromatic prints done right. That belt!

  • margaret meyers

Out!  The sleeves and neck bow are the worst of the 70s.

  • snarkykitten

Laura Ingalls goes through her awkward her goth stage.

  • aristida_girl

Inn, she looks good, despite the fussiness of the dress..

  • Jillaine13

Out.  Brad missed on this one.  Shorten it, loose the pussy bow and unbutton top button for a start.  Looks too mature for her.

  • OUT. makes her shapeless.

  • Iroqhard

OUT. If she had the blouse with pants, or the skirt with a different top. But both of them together, with the earrings and hair, make her look matronly in a bad way. Patsy would never leave the house looking this matronly darlings.

  • Out. The clothing makes me dizzy from looking at it, and what’s north of the neck is a bad mashup of Kourtney Kardashian & Blake Lively.

  • prettybigkitty

I was undecided initially, too.  But looking back, it’s the pussy bow that ruins it.  A different neckline probably would have tipped the scales to IN.  But sadly, as is, it’s an OUT.

  • oh jessica, what has happened to you?  you started out as a luscious, exotic, full-lipped young woman, and now you’ve turned into a lady who lunches in pasadena.

  • Joyce VG

IN. She looks great. Pussy bow and all.

  • Wendi126

    1983 on acid

  • guest2visits

If somehow this were a trim little dress, it might work. But the pretty blouse, and the pretty skirt, are too busy and too frufru
together. The top looks very ‘stuffed’ into the skirt.  But Jessica still looks pretty.

  • littlemac8

Is it too late to say OUT!  Dowdy sequined number??  Forget it!

  • 3boysful

How can no one have mentioned how wrong for this dress the huge dangly earrings are?   There’s so much going on, some nice, say 6-carat, diamond studs would help take it out of “suburban mom of a certain age dresses up” territory.

  • OUT.  That is just too much STUFF for one dress.

  • Ewww look at those legs! Someone dipped her bottom half in a giant vat of orange paint.

  • drdarke

Is this Dress Up Like Your Grandma Week, and nobody told me? First Amy Adams, now Jessica Alba – and yes, I realize Ms. Adams found her level as a Walt Disney character and is praying for ENCHANTED II, but what’s Ms. Alba’s excuse?

  • Out. It’s too busy and ageing.

  • In.

  • Dot

She should ship this dress to Zooey. I must admit that I love the secretary style dress and would wear the hell out of it myself. But it just doesn’t suit Jessica Alba at all.

  • In_Stitches

The makeup is sexy enough to really give the dress the oomph it needs.  Definite IN.  It’s calling for some purple stilettos, stat though.

  • Christiane Truelove

What is this, “9 to 5 – Electric Bugaloo”? This is like what Lily Tomlin’s character from the original would have worn for an evening function.

  • PeaceBang

OUT. So out. Aging, too busy, pussy bow, and it looks itchy.

  • kolokOlchik

OUT, it makes her look like her boobs are drooping at her waist.  The hair is tragic

  • melanie0866

OUT.  Too “what my mother wore to dinner in the ’80s” for me.

  • Sunshine16

Out, silly bow on top of that craziness is simply too much

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

  • kathryn_dc

    Yoga hair extraordinaire.

  • LilyPad

I feel like that skirt needed a simpler, more fitted top. Too much fabric, too much pattern. OUT. I think she looks really pretty though!
