In or Out: Elle Fanning in Miu Miu

Posted on September 10, 2012

Oh, sweetie! You finally wore something so questionable, that we simply must shuffle you along to the adult division so we can all judge you accordingly! Today, you are a WOMAN, darling. A woman with questionable instincts.

Elle Fanning attends the premiere of ‘Ginger & Rosa’ during the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival in Miu Miu.

Miu Miu Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Karlie Kloss (NEXT)

But we won’t lie. We think this is kind of fan-fucking-tastic. It’s like Marcia Brady ran away from home and got a job on Carnaby Street. We love her commitment to the look, but we think some interpreting of the runway style was called for here. We would have told her to keep the suit (because it’s fabulous), and ditch everything else. As fun as those shoes are, they’re too literal and a bridge too far for the look. The blouse is distracting.  In a sea of teen and tween Disney Princess stars, we absolutely love that this little chickie is going her own way. If only her styling here was half as bold. Sorry, doll. That’s why they call them “risks.”

Vote Now!

IN! She’s off the beaten path, bitches! Props!

OUT! Way too groovy for my tastes.

The kittens did not collectively love Amy Adams’ rather severe and sharp look, voting it OUT.

IN!! She is rocking that freaky look (even though those shoes are Frankenstinnian!)

  • IN with a few exceptions: I hate the shoes, and she should think about translating the runway look to her own style, rather than adopting it (almost) exactly. But still, I applaud the effort.

  • I have to give her an IN despite the shoes, she is serving up attitude and boldness. And she’s wearing a colour.

    • Amen!  She looks like a breath of fresh air here!

    • Agreed! In, because it’s so outside the whispy little girl range. Now she needs to do something with the whispy little girl hair.

  • Bozhi

    In.  Cute and age appropriate.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I politely disagree. The only way to pull this suit off at all is to be as tall as the model, which Fanning isn’t. And the shoes take it firmly into OUT land.

This is a MPDG if she were a teacher in a disco.

    • Sobaika

I don’t think it’s a height thing necessarily, more of a presence thing. I just don’t think she’s werqing it. It’s an Out for me.

      • Pants_are_a_must

My reason for the height thing is because of the way the suit looks. The model has long enough legs to compensate for the high waist and the length of the jacket. Fanning doesn’t. And yes, she also lacks the ability to wear the clothes, not let them wear her, but it could also be an age thing.

        • poggi

I am not sure it’s height problem for me either, but I can see what you mean about the proportions.  I think if you are going to wear this, it had better fit.  And it doesn’t.  The jacket is too big.  I also agree that the presence is lacking too  The wispy hair, shiny face, no makeup (I know that’s her thing) do not work with this.

    • ChiliP

Seriously. OUT. And I’m not being so polite- I’m giving a suspicious side eye to anyone saying “in.” That’s right internet strangers, I’m judging you.

      • NC_Meg

I am too. This is not good in any way and I fear the bitter kittens voting IN might have hit their heads this morning. Is everyone ok?

      • Michaela Tuckova

Judge away, I don’t care. I’ll just continue to feast my eyes on the little chicka (14, are you kidding me?) and continue to wish I’d been as fierce at her age. Instead of a little princess, she dressed up like Willy Wonka’s and Ringo Starr’s (circa Sergeant Pepper) love child! Honestly, I don’t have words for how much I adore the entire thing.

I do get though that your mileage may wary, and I have spent many a day scratching my head at other kittens, so… really, judge away :)(count me as an IN, in case that wasn’t clear)

        eta – typo.

        • ChiliP

All in good fun, all in good fun.

I do understand your points, but this is still an OUT for me. Since we are judging the outfit and not Elle herself, I need to look past her chutzpuh and take it all in- and what I see aint pretty. The suit clashes with her fair coloring, the fit is off, the shoes look costumey, and while I don’t think a 14 year old (or any woman) needs to be slathered in makeup, she’s wearing thousands of dollars in clothing yet looks like she’s dying of consumption.  Some powder, a sweep of blush and she would be good to go.  Also, I appreciate the funkiness of the suit, but it’s just not working for me. The suit itself is kinda cool, but that brown shirt and plaid scarf thing are frankly hiddeous. This is the kind of outfit that needs an extremely confident women to pull it off, which I doubt any 14 year old would be able to do. I can’t get behind it, eventhough I realize many BKs have a different opinion.

Here’s the thing- I don’t want every starlet to dress in the same generic pretty-pretty princess dresses, and I encourage the development of personal style.  I LOVED the Gucci suit Emma Stone wore to the People’s Choice Awards ( and Elle herself has chosen unconventional dresses in the past that I applauded (    I like that she has a hippie style and is not interested in looking like a generic starlet. But there are better ways than this. Different for the sake of being different isn’t enough to negate what’s wrong with this outfit.

So, to summarize- Elle’s daring? In. This ensemble? OUT. But try again Ms. Elle, the BKs will gladly be there to cheer you on along the way.

      • I can see why people are saying IN – because it’s like she’s the anti-Disney and I love that. But I just can’t with the outfit, it reminds me of some of Florence’s outfits that I just can’t stand. So OUT from me.

    • sweetestsith

I agree, the proportions are wacky on her. She seems vaguely amused with herself, and I like the idea, so points for both, but… It isn’t quite there for me, and she looks awkward. Out.

    • EveEve

OUT.  It shows no creativity on her stylist’s part. Stiff and trying way too hard.   Plus she looks high as a kite, and very uncomfortable.

  • She looks EXACTLY like one my friends Japanese resin dolls. I love it.

  • OUT OUT OUT. My god, my eyes are burning.

    • Vickiefantastico

      Yeah, same here.

  • Absolutely out. She should’ve gone all the way.

  • call_me_schmeg

elle does her best austin powers impersonation. it’s totally, utterly ridiculous, so i give her an IN just for walking about her door, much less sauntering down a red carpet.

  • IN.  It is great to see her taking risks, though I agree about the styling, and also: honey, you’re melting.  Go for something groovy and summer-appropriate next time.  Still, though, overall IN.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Yeah, I do have to agree that she’s sweating her little behind off. She definitely should have saved the outfit for cooler weather, but I still LOVE it.

  • Anathema_Device

Out. I like the idea of the outfit (love the suit), but nothing was properly deployed. It was a close vote, though, as I give her credit for taking a fashion risk. (I need to add: The hair and makeup are AWFUL.)

    • DinaSews

OUT.  I agree with everything you said.

    • ballerinawithagun

Unfortunately Out, because I love the suit also.

    • Introspective

Um what makeup??? that’s to me the biggest problem. The washed out face is serving nothing for me. The suit however, with better shoes and a different blouse could have been a knockout. But given the exact reuse of the runway look, the flat hair and the “I just scrubbed my face and ran out the door” thing pushes this over the edge. OUT.

But keep up the risk taking Dakota, cause Im sick of starlets in cocktail dresses and putty heels.

      • WERQitspice

This is Elle, Dakota’s sister, channeling Marcia Brady and doing so poorly! It’s too literal and she is not owning it. The shoes and the blouse need to be different to give her a fighting chance in this suit. OUT for me

        • Introspective

thanks for reminding me that its Elle and not Dakota. and yes, she’s SO not owning it.

  • Katie Riley

In. She’s young and can take any fashion risk she wants. I think this is fabulous, save for the fact that she looks like she’s melting a touch. But serious points for being daring.

  • This is odd, but if she had kept the high hem, the shoes would have KILLED.  But with the lower hem, they just look odd and rather 80s-high-school-quasi-goth.

    • That said, SO in.

  • As much as I love purple, that suit is burning my retinas.

I kind of love the shoes, though.

  • Dot

  • Anna Tree

    loathe. OUT

  • OUT. She looks like she’s playing dress up using her wacky aunt’s old clothes.

  • Judy_S

IN. Totally groovy. Especially on a such a young girl. Marcia Brady on Carnaby Street indeed.

  • Ceur

I honestly cannot give this girl an out. Look at her! Then look at the regular Teen Awards red carpet. Then look at her again! She’s quirky and she’s trying and she’s wearing anything but a short and shiny shoulderless dress.

    • Pretty much my reason for why I gave her an ‘IN’. The girl went so left field from what her peers would have worn if invited to this event.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Yes, but this suit is all about “hi I am a child actor and one day I will be going for that Oscar, mark my words” kind of attitude, not a “HI LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME!” attitude. Your point is well made, but I think Elle Fanning deserves to be judged among her peers (i.e. Hailee Steinfeld, Chloe Moretz, Saoirse Ronan, her own sister etc), not among the Teen Choice Awards crowd, and among her peers this look is a clear OUT.

  • She always looks so sweaty-greasy 🙁 i just wanna wipe her face with a towel.
    As for the outfit, OUT!

  • Judy_J

IN.  I kind of like it, really.  It’s got a cool ’70’s vibe.  I don’t really like her stringy hair, though.

  • janetjb

    Nice try.

    (I wish she’d try a little powder)

  • AlinaValero

IN, love that she took a risk. I do want to push her hair out of her face though…

  • alyce1213

The outfit’s groovy.  I don’t like her grooming.

  • nannypoo

Awful. And her face looks absolutely slimy. Has the girl never heard of blotting papers? She should go home and wash her face, put on a little makeup, trim those scraggly ends, scour her closet for something cute to wear and try again.

    • mountainFashionista

Her face and hair look like she just finished throwing up.

I get the impression that she’s a cool chick, though, who’s not interested in going the “pretty” route right now.  Good for her for that!

  • In_Stitches

I wish the cut of the suit had been modernized.  A lower waisted pant and a lower stance on the jacket would have made it divine.  As is, it looks like she found a fabulous suit at the salvation army.  Still, it’s not entirely unflattering, it’s bold and fun so how can she be anything but IN.

  • ChaCha_70

Wow, this outfit is so atypical of any starlet. Girl has guts and although it’s not perfect, I’m giving her a big IN!

  • SapphoPoet

IN! She looks great (although could have used a dusting of powder). I kind of love all the crazy here.

  • AnneElliot

Sorry, I hate it.  It looks like she’s playing dress-up at a vintage clothing store.  And the suit is probably horribly expensive, can’t they even get the pattern to match up at the seams?

Don’t get me started on her shiny face and sad hair.  OUT.

  • lalahartma

    This is fabulous!

  • VioletFem

IN. After much thought and consideration I’m voting her in, because I find this outfit interesting. I don’t love the outfit (and honestly I find it hard to like the whole look). However, I like that she took a risk in a fairly unpredictable manner and if this was styled a little bit differently (more modern shoes and a simpler shirt) this could actually work.

  • leftcoastpickle

In. Love it. Except the shoes and flat hair. So tired of flat hair. Edited to add, I also hate the checkered ascot more than the shoes. Subtract the ascot and give her the Beyonce afro from Austin Powers.

  • D

In! She didn’t make it totally work, but it is a much more interesting look than almost any other teen star has tried to pull off. An “in” for it not being princessy and twee, and actually pretty fantastic on the whole.

  • Jennifer Coleman

Just like you said: definitely lose the shoes. I’m honestly torn on the blouse – if it didn’t have that checkered dickie thingy, it might be okay. Regarding her hair/makeup, she’s trying to have her cake & eat it too: the child-like no grooming required look with high couture, and that dog won’t hunt anymore. Her face is a shiny hot mess, she needs to style her hair, and frankly revisit the color or add some lowlights for dimension. She has a bunch of 12 year olds hot on her tail in the baby clotheshorse (clothesponies?) race, it’s time to take it to the next level.

    • kimmeister

That checkered dickie thing confuses the heck out of me.  What exactly is it??? Is it attached to the blouse? It looks like she tied a tie directly on her neck.

  • She looks like she’s dying of heat.

  • PinkLemon

IN. this is so fab. especially for someone her age.

  • spooki C

I like the color but hate everything else. The shoes are fug, the pants are too short, the jacket looks too big, her face looks like wax, and her hair is taking over her face. I kind of hate 70s fashion to begin with but I think she looks really dumpy in this suit. If it was fitted better and had cuter shoes maaaaaaybe I would give it an IN.

  • imspinningaround

The shoes are awful, but that’s Miuccia’s fault, not Elle’s.  I would’ve chosen a shiny, pointy Beatle boot and hemmed the pants longer.  Otherwise, head to toe 1967 realness.

  • merciblahblah

1992 called and said to drop those shoes off at the Goodwill – they don’t want them back. As for everything else – LOVES. That suit is fan-frigging-tastic. I may like it a wee bit better with a lighter blouse underneath, but I could live with the one she has on too. I’m sure she is breathing a sigh of relief now at my validation. Ahem.

  • KSpence

    This is awesome. In.

  • tired_mommy

Out. Reminds me of Willy Wonka.

    • halleygee

Willy Wonka was my first thought and I can’t get past it – OUT.

  • I’m going to give her an IN. But I really want to blot her face. OMG.

  • TieDye64

Oh so very IN. While I agree the shoes take this too far into groovy land, I still dig it. The shiny face pains me a bit though.

  • lilibetp

I ADORE that suit on her.  If I were dressing her, I’d probably put her in a t-shirt the color of the blouse.  I’d DEFINITELY put her in shoes that weren’t clodhoppers.  Maybe flat kilties, but not clodhoppers.

  • ojosazules

In. The shirt and shoes aren’t quite right, but love her style.

  • MintaHallWriter

IN!  Hate the shoes, though they weirdly go with the outfit. And the jacket is a skosh too long on her. But–wow.  Cute. Age appropriate. And just funky enough to set a new standard for chickie celebs.

Good for you, girl.  But be braver next time. LIsten to your uncles TLo, and try to step away from the runway styling just a tad.

  • Jangle57

As a child of the 60s/70s, it reminds me wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too much of the pantsuits I used to wear back in the day when I was in junior high which makes it a tough sell for me to begin with.  And I hate her hair and I really hate the suit with her coloring.  OUT

    • formerlyAnon

Yeah, but don’t lie, didn’t we look fab  (for the times) in those pant suits? I know *I* did. {snicker}  I’d never deny a new generation that joy.

  • l_c_ann

Out, because when her grandchildren see this on her, they’ll laugh.

  • melanie0866

In!  I agree with your comments about the styling, though.

  • BrooklynBomber

IN. The pant length is wrong for the shoes, but nevertheless, in.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Out. Which I hate to say, because I love the suit and applaud her for taking a risk.  But the styling of it and the terrible hair and makeup just ruins the look.

  • I don’t know, I think she looks kind of adorable. TLO nailed it with their “Marcia Brady on Carnaby St” description. IN for me!

  • Austin Powers with the sweats.  NO.

  • kelsita421

i want so badly to support her in this, but i just keep grimacing! OUT, darling.

  • MK03

NO. Disaster all around. The suit is hideous, the shoes are terrible, and she really, really needs some powder or blotting papers or something. I hate to say it, but she looks gross.

  • Clueless_Jock

    I love it. IN.

  • j_anson

IN. It’s awesome. Although totally right on the shoes; they’re fun in concept but they actually don’t look that good if you’re not a model with freakishly long, thin legs to balance out their clunkiness.

  • BazoDee

This may be my toughest IN-OUT vote to date. I mean I want to applaud her for trying and for almost making it work. But the shoes and the lack of personalizing it make it fall a bit flat. Her hair and make-up are horrid. I think I’m going with OUT – give it to Gwen Stefani – she will know what to do with this and WERQ the shit out of it.

    • mountainFashionista

I agree — I honestly can’t decide which way to vote on this one.  I wonder if that’ll qualify it for a special display in the TLo Hall of Fame?

      • BazoDee

  • IN!!  So FAB!!  I want this outfit RIGHT NOW!!!

  • Bittybis

Love it! Although I can’t help wondering what it would look like on Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

  • IN

  • Julie Fountain

The suit is fun but I agree with the styling.  And the makeup. Good lord.  She needs new gays. OUT.

  • Elizabetta1022

In, because I love the idea of Marcia Brady running away and working on Carnaby St. And it’s really kind of fabulous, isn’t it? “Totes adorbs,” as my nieces say.

  • Scarlet39

Had she personalized it in some way, she could have been an IN.    As it is, she looks like a thrift store threw up on her.

  • Zaftiguana

Lol, oh man, I have to give her an IN just for sheer chutzpah. I love that she really went for it with such full commitment. It doesn’t change that she looks ridiculous and definitely should have switched up the shirt and shoes, especially if she was doing to ditch the dickie-tie that was a better print and color pairing with the suit, but she’s clearly taking the piss a little and I love it.

  • teensmom99

    IN.  No analysis–just in.

  • I fucking love it!

She is working the shit outta this look. At her age, too! Star!

  • rissa42210

I can’t.  I appreciate the risk, but I don’t think it worked.  She’s no Sevigny.  OUT.

  • jw_ny

The shoes are awful and the shiny face is bothersome.  All else works fine.  Love the attitude.  🙂

  • I agree that she should have departed from the runway in the details, but it’s too fab for anything but a big-ass IN despite that.

  • LuisaNL

IN. The shoes are a little too much but she looks adorable!

  • IN. Everything but the shoes.  The shoes are horrid.

  • elemspbee

so FUCKING IN!!! this is fabu. She’s kicking ass in this. It’s edgy. brilliant with the shoes, and the hair to top it all off.

  • Of course, IN.

  • Vaniljekjeks

In.  But someone needs to introduce her to some facepowder.  Even colorless.  You are too shiny, dear.

  • I’m going with IN!  It’s tailored, it isn’t the color of flesh, and it’s unique and funky.  Love it!

  • Bill Curtis

Well, it’s not like Davy Jones needed that outfit anymore.

    • mountainFashionista

  • Sara__B

The pants length and width with those shoes look awkward on and off the runway, and I’ll bet she was boiling in that very covered-up autumn/fall look — thus the greasy face. But she’s young, so she can wear this stuff and get away with it better than most.

  • Snailstsichr

Reluctant OUT. The hair and makeup are terrible – I honestly thought she had a black eye when I first looked at her face. The shoes are horrid and I don’t think the jacket fits – the length is too long, but the sleeves look too short.

I love this pantsuit, but you can’t just throw clothes on someone and hope it works. You also need fit and styling.

  • Michael_Jones

In.  There are things that I don’t love (and you already listed them), but what a fun, kicky look (and I think we should grade children on a curve…)

  • trisker

    IN.  She looks crazy good.

  • Lilithcat

    Dear Elle,

    Buy some powder.

    Love, Lilith.

  • almondemy

This definitely gets a “shine on, you crazy diamond” IN, but with qualifiers – she is like a cross between Tom Petty and Jonathan Rhys Meyers from Velvet Goldmine.  Totally agree that the shoes are too on the nose.  Would have changed the top or the hair, though: something to soften the look a skosh.  It is an oddly masculine look, AND it making me break out in heat rash just thinking about all that polyester in September.

  • Out. ick. whats with the coke snorting make-up? the hair is gasping for conditioner. The outfit just borders on annoying.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

In.  It IS waaaay too groovy for my tastes. But I think in this case it’s easy for me to acknowledge that my “tastes” are not going to intersect with hers ever.  She’s working it pretty well.

  • OUT- She put on the runway outfit and brushed her hair. No makeup. No thought. No effort. Out.

  • IN  (but)…shoes are fine… looks like what I wore in 10th grade….but the pants are too short for them…hate the shiny greasy complextion

  • Love her. I do question the shoes too, but it’s a minor quibble, Baby Fanning is IN

  • altalinda

    An enthusiastic IN!

  • Joyce VG

    IN!!!!  I love it!

  • Hate the shoes, love everything else. In.

  • YoungSally

I had that outfit in brown with orange medallions in 1973…..wore it in a fashion show at I Magnin and got it as a present.  Buffy (Annissa Jones not the Vampire Slayer) was the host.

  • Kate4queen

    IN for trying. 🙂

  • StillGary

IN! Some eLements are not great but it isn’t a bubble skirt — you go with the Marianne Faithful, Sweetie!

  • In! It’s like how I dressed in 7th grade, but she has access to better clothes!

  • IN! Baby Pimpette! Needs a brim.

  • IN! Love the color  and I’d keep the blouse and neck detail. Hair = perfect for this. As for the shoes, well, this cried out for boots. I can still hear them, Clarice…The boots, the boots.

  • Trisha26

IN – just for “going there.” She’s young, she’s having fun, it’s fashion. And it’s better than the micro-minis & stilettos every other young star would be forced into.

  • TSkot

Yikes!  Even the model looks ridiculous: OUT OUT OUT!

  • Laylalola

  • OUT.

  • ringthing

    IN, I love it.

  • Vanja

In! It’s different, it’s a trouser suit and it has a print. I’ll give her a pass for the awful shoes and wrong coloured shirt.

  • jennifervney

In! Love the originality of it, despite the frankenloafers.

  • MilaXX

IN! I know it’s crazy and I have to say if Florence Welsh wore this I might not like it as much.  My only quibbles are the makeup and the shoes. I suspect given her coloring some makeup artist is doing a dewy look on her face. Sadly in stills it looks shiney and greasy. I had some professional photos done at a video shoot I did and had the same thing happen to me. The video was fine, but in the stills I looked like a new penny. As for the shoes, I almost like them, but I’m not loving that color green. There’s enough color and contrast in the rest of the outfit that she could have worn them in black and been fine.

  • Zippypie

I love this suit but her raggedy hair and the makeup kill it for me, along with the clunky shoes.  But the suit is divine!  Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!

  • DaveUWSNYC

IN…since I had almost the same suit AND SHOES in 1977. Thank you Miss F for revivifying my lost youth!

  • Elisabeth Brewer

In for her fun, frisky use of color

  • marilyn

In.  I like the dark shirt with the rest of it.  It does not fight with the busy suit, as the shirt on the runway model does.

  • belfebe

IN!!!! I don’t care for the shoes, but she looks adorable!!! You go girl!!! Show those Disney princesses how it’s done!!!

  • Oooh, no. But it’s not her fault. I can’t vote her in but will not vote her out.

    Count me as “ABSTAIN”

  • IN. Don’t discourage awesomeness!!!

  • tallgirl1204

In.  I so want that suit, and I think she looks adorably different than all of the pretty-pretty-princessas.

  • Larkin21

I agree with TLo that it’s an amazing suit that just stayed to close to the runway. I especially don’t like the high collar. Hair and make-up could use work too. Sorry, dear. I want to love it. But just barely an OUT.

  • In!

  • Is the checkerboard thing around her neck part of the shirt, or is it a separate scarf?  Because if it’s the latter, I’d have used that as a headband or tie to corral that scraggly looking hair.  Also, why are the jacket sleeves so short?  This might have worked if someone had paid more attention to details with the young Ms. Fanning, because who other than someone under 21 can actually wear an outfit like this, but as it is, her minions have been caught daydreaming.  OUT.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks like she’s roasting, and points off for copying the runway so closely (I would have given her mad props if she had paired that blouse/scarf? thing with the suit herself), the shoes are a little too chunky with what is already a busy look. She’s veering into the cartoon.

HOWEVER. She’s working the look. It was a good decision to lose the tie, and she has the shape and coloring to carry this off like no one else could (though I wouldn’t mind seeing Florence Welch try). IN. Keep it up, Ms. Fanning.

  • Diane_G

Marcia Brady? I was thinking Elton John.

    • kimmeister

I was thinking a psychedelic Joker.

  • Diane_G

And you know what? I’m giving this an IN, just because it’s so quirky and devoting to the look.

  • lizajane1776

IN. Love the shoes! Such fun! V. glad she ditched the tie, that was a bridge too far.

  • formerlyAnon

I LOVE those shoes with this.  Not sure about the belt, even if the model did wear it, and have real reservations about the color of the shirt (with the usual caveat that my color perception is noticeably nonstandard), but overall it is a LOOK and it’s a very, very fun look that really is only wearable by the young and nicely proportioned.

  • I know others have mentioned it, but her face always looks so shiny or greasy, it really kills the look for me.

  • DinahR

OUT.   I really love this suit….  but, I don’t think it looks good on her.   It looks like a costume.  I think those colors are not right for her complexion either.  Changing her hair, makeup, shirt and shoes might have helped.  Then again if you have to change everything else and it still is questionable I think that’s a clear indication she suit is too funktastic for her and in the wrong palette.

That being said, young gals should have total fun with fashion while they can!  Good on her.

  • unbornfawn

OUT. This isn’t terrible or a fashion disaster. Props for patterns and the attempt at fun and pants! It just isn’t quite working. I’m not sure if it is the patterns, shiny face, lack of makeup or poor attempt at fresh face, or I’m having an unpleasant 70’s flashback.

  • SophieCollier

    IN.  But only for her.

  • OUT:  The jacket seems to be eating her, and I think the pants would look better if they were more slim cut and highwaters. Also, get those wisps out of your face honey.

  • juliamargaret

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

There are no words to describe how much I hate this whole look.  OUT.

  • Lilak

Gave a little gasp (the good kind) when I first saw this, and I haven’t come down yet!
While I think a solid brogue or loafer is in fact the best way to complement this suit, I wish the pair she wore hadn’t been so clodhopper-y.  (Is it the shoe itself, or might it work better with a model’s longer legs and bigger feet?)

  • Samuel Donovan

I’ve never as enamored with her as I am right now, in this crazypants suit.

  • aristida_girl

    In!  She looks great!

  • emily mcginnis

i agree with you–love the suit. everything else needs to go.

  • lrhoff

Love it!  Face is too shiny, though — call for makeup.

  • NCDFan

In! She’s not showing off everything she has, she did ditch the tie, and it’s colorful.

  • efishfan

I HATE this foulard “moment” that is attempting to happen.

    Not on my watch.

  • DeGuz

    IN! She’s rockin’ the Wonka!

  • i can’t with the shoes they make it out for me

  • Joy

  • Samantha Irene

OUT. I applaud her risk taking, and congratulate the awesome suite – but the shoes, the blouse and the belt turn it into a big no for me.

  • She looks hideous! From her fried hair to her shiny face all the way down to the tips of her ugly shoes. Definitely OUT!

  • elizonthelam

  • Buffy

IN but yeah, she should lose the shoes.

  • TheOriginalLulu

GROOOOOOOOVY! I love it; she looks awesome!

  • kikisayshi

I dunno… It could work if the hem on the jacket were a little shorter and she replaced that shirt underneath with something a little more fitted. As is, though, I have to vote it OUT.

  • There’s a line between letting your clothes do the talking, and looking like you mistook the red carpet for a fitting room.  Elle, I applaud the bold choice, but you’re on the wrong side of that line.

  • sleepycat

I love this look, except of course the shoes. IN!

  • schadenfreudelicious

she may be a woman, but she is one without blotting paper…..

  • LongTall_Sally

I love the suit and think its fabulous that she went this route, but I can’t express how much I hate the shoes.   If the shoes had been more low-key I could have voted this in, but as-is its OUT for me.

  • turtleemily

In! Styling may be too literal, but we need to encourage these Fannings when it comes to color.

  • butterflysunita

OUT.  The suit is cool but she can’t carry it off.  A case of “Girl, that’s not your suit.”

  • y is her hair so damn limp. it looks like one track of weave, with zero body… she might as well be bald, she has like no hair :O

  • Out, sorry.  Hate the shoes (probably because I hated wearing similar ones when I was a teen, all clunky and chunky).  I feel like the whole outfit kind of overwhelms her, so that she disappears and all we see is the suit.  I like to think this could have styled to be more flattering to her.

  • Props, because she clearly has every Florence + the Machine album. IN!

  • ChelseaNH

I have to come down on the OUT side.  The suit is fabulous and a great choice (which is why I’d like to encourage her with an in) and I like the hair and the attitude, but the rest of it spoils the look for me.   A shirt that was more in keeping with the model’s tie would have put me over into the win column.

  • IN, the look works. But yeah, I agree, that a white shirt, some nice black shoes and perhaps a compact in her pocket? would have upgraded the look substantially.

  • frannyprof

    IN!!! Love it.

  • ccm800

IN!  But why so shiny all the time…give the girl some blotter paper already

  • mmc2315

IN!  It screams “I’m not stuck in a rut!  I’m interesting!”  In a good way.  And, the color and pattern made me smile.

  • IN. Adorable.

  • Alexis Keller

OUT She looks like jonathan rhys meyers’ glam rocker in velvet goldmine

  • demidaemon

I applaud the risks she took here, but it looks a little too buttoned up. Also, shoes are decidedly too clunky. OUT.

  • LLuL

Out. I’m too distracted by her hair and makeup to care about the outfit.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I’m fine with the suit and even the blouse, but not the shoes and NOT the hair. Yechhh. OUT.

  • zelavie

IN!  It’s a lot of look, but she’s fully owning it.

  • Call me Bee

I say OUT just for the ugly shoes.

  • IN!!!!

She is adorably absurd, and totally pulls off the look!

…wish she had worn blush, though…

  • Sweetpea176

In, despite the shoes, which I think are wrong for the outfit.

  • guest2visits

It’s a fun idea, but agree; altogether it’s a carnival that’s wearing her.  Plus it looks hot as hell in there, and that can’t be fun.

  • maggiemaybe

IN! And I gotta say, I’m loving those shoes.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • Gener1c

In In In – A thousand times in!  (But the shoes are awfully literal)

  • Nonnah

  • Martha Anderson

I am in the middle of the road

the shirt is too heavy in texture and color.  adds bulk and dulls the look .  Even a slightly lighter tone in silk would improve
Makes the torso look encased in armor.

Hating the pale hair pale waxy skin.  These colors would play better on a healthier complexion with darker hair

  • Emily Rice

Out. Love the suit, but don’t love the look. My first thought was that she was trying out her Tom Petty Halloween costume a few weeks too early. Not good for a starlet, no matter how un-prissy she’s trying to be. Same with the shiny face – you can do natural, but this is a step too far. She’s young. Maybe she just hasn’t learned that ‘refined’ and ‘unique’ aren’t mutually exclusive terms, but that still doesn’t let her stylist off the hook.

  • Susan Crawford

I’m going with an IN, just because it is so refreshing to see Elle looking a little edgy and not like something on top of a Victorian-era Christmas treetop, all pale pink tulle and chiffon and twee. (OTOH, I am just NOT loving MiuMiu these days – I get it . . . but I don’t love it.)

  • travelingcat

IN! She’s a teenager wearing something so questionable it’s fabulous. Not a home run, but I so remember fondly going out in something ridiculous and feeling fantastic in it.

  • quiltrx

in, because i love the suit!

  • “It’s like Marcia Brady ran away from home and got a job on Carnaby Street.”   Bwaaahahaa!  Yes!  And you boys wonder why we love you so much!
I totally love this look on her, except for the shoes – she’d have done better with something much simpler.  It’s a statement suit, so she doesn’t need a statement shoe.  Plus, her face is too shiny – just needs to powder that down and do a little color on the face – minimal – and she’d be fine. . But sure, for the suit alone, I give her an IN!

  • Props for the crazy look, and the fact that she committed and is rocking it. Gotta give her an IN!

  • snarkykitten

I love it! but she needs to invest in a better foundation.

  • In.  More for the effort than the execution though.

  • AWS

Oh. A photo of Florence Welch’s vomit.

  • boweryboy

It’s so literal that it veers into costume territory.  Either the jacket or the pants but not together, and the blouse and shoes are a big resounding No.

To her credit she is rocking it even if she looks like she’s headed to a Very Brady Convention.

  • pokokpuding

IN because this sort of thing should only be encouraged.

  • In!

  • fashionablylate

Everything from the neck down is FABULOUS. But the lank hair and greasy face are sad. And she does not have the sass to pull this off. OUT.

  • IN for effort, but it reads Johnny Depp in Wonderland to me.  I’m just so happy to see her not dressed as a wraith I would have given an IN to bunny slippers and a tiara.

  • UptownNippy

In for the nerve to wear it, good for her

  • ert4osu

Out. I think it looks a little too old for her with the heaviness off that fabric. And the pant could be a tad longer. Shoes are too clunky, boring styling.

  • Candigirl1968

    OUT.  Too much.

  • Verascity

IN, although I hate that collar. I can live with the shoes.

  • Elisa_G

In. The suit is fabulous, and she pulls it off. But someone please introduce her to face powder.

  • IN for effort.

  • crackineggs

In from the chin down, out from the chin up, so geographically, IN.

  •  Funkadellically in for the suit and hair alone!  Blouse and shoes, not too much, but she’s got her 1972  on!  (I wouldn’t want this fabric to become the mainstream though, it was bad enough 40 years ago!)

  • lonepear

I dig it. If you can’t wear this crazy shit while you’re a (beautiful, rich, and oh yeah, talented) teenager, when can you?

  • neofashionista

she looks like one of the Brady sisters after they got into a bunch of Bath Salts! No bueno.

  • neofashionista

just to clarify I meant to say O-U-T

  • Though hair and makeup definitely needs more effort, I say IN. Girl’s looking fabulous!

  • Out. Anyone can just copy the runway look (if they have a connected stylist or tons of cash)!

  • Agree with the criticisms, but still, totally in just for the risk taking.  Her instincts will be more finely honed with time.

  • Tafadhali

This is freaking AMAZING. For her. Probably no one else ever, but the androgynous psychedelic rock vibe is really working for me, and it’s absolutely the kind of thing I would have wanted to wear at age 14, when (a) I was obsessed with the ’70s and (b) fashion was really about dressing up and imagining a persona. I don’t know if I can sign of the shoes, though — at least not with this.

  • She looks likes she stepped out of an Andy Warhol party (fabulous!) except she’s not 100% confident about her look so that makes it an OUT for me.

  • julnyes

I say IN though I wish she would work on better make-up and hair choices.

  • MarissaLG

    OUT! Come on!

  • oohsparkley!

In. I don’t like the shoes…maybe if the pants were longer (like we used to wear them).  But still in.

  • DominoEstella

IN!  I too wish she would have changed it up a bit.

  • FashionableLena

She’s young so I say why not?  But the shoes brought it from fun and young to costume-y.

  • In! I think she looks fantastic and fun. I’d hand her a blotting sheet, but I can forgive the direct from the runway styling.  At least she dumped the tie.

  • Town

The outfit minus the shoes is great! The shade of the shoes is great, but not the shape of the shoes.

  • This totally looks like 90’s era Prada (and my god those shoes are straight up mall goth, 1994). It works on the catwalk, but looks ridiculous on anyone who isn’t a runway model. I also am not a fan of celebrities who just wear looks straight off the runway instead of mixing it up and personalizing it (more likely, blame the stylist). How cute would that jacket look with a pair of cropped, drainpipe trousers and some flat oxford loafers? Elle is adorable, but this really feels too (in the words of PR judges) costume-y.

  • BrightsideSusan

Agree – love the mod suit – hate the styling.  Bit IN.

  • Snarky_Amber

Elle – set this one free and let it find Aimee Mann, its rightful owner.
