In or Out: Cat Deeley in Tadashi Shoji

Posted on September 19, 2012

People seem to loves them some Cat Deeley, because of all the “T Lo, why don’t you guys cover more of X?” requests, she tops the list. And while it’s true the lady does put the work in to remain fashionable and stylish, we never seem to be as in love with her efforts as others are.

Cat Deeley attends the Audi And Derek Lam Kick Off Emmy Week 2012 party in Los Angeles in a Tadashi Shoji dress paired with Michael van der Ham Fall 2012 sandals.

Tadashi Shoji Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Johanna Gronholm

We are underwhelmed.

It’s a good, but not great dress. Great color, but too many elements for one look. We’re thinking there should be a rule against lace and fringe in the same garment. But like we said: good. She could’ve styled this up into something sassy and attention-getting. Instead, she’s got the cocker spaniel hair and some really ugly fucking shoes. Also, her lips match her dress and that tends to make our asses itchy. Sorry, Cat fans. We’re not loving this one at all.

But you, of course, get to have the final say because we’re so frigging magnanimous it hurts.

Vote Now!

IN! Shut up, you bitches! I love her and she looks fabulous!

OUT! You bitches are right. This is sad.

Christina Hendricks’ flouncy print dress was considered too much for her body to bear, and was voted OUT.

That hair style is ridiculously unflattering on her. So much so that I hardly notice the rest of the outfit.

I like the dress and like the shorter version she is sporting. But the bad shoes, hair, and makeup make this an Out.

    •  Agreed, the shorter length certainly ups the sassiness, but the other bits overwhelm, OUT

  • afabulous50

    OUT….nothing further need be added.

  • schadenfreudelicious

its a total OUT, the dress is bearable in the longer length shown on the model but looks very odd shortened, her lipstick is horrific and those shoes look like fabric remnants from an old couch….

  • lovelyivy

OUT. Those shoes are actually beyond ugly, and have entered an alternate universe of unacceptable. I hope they and the trend they rode in on are banished from fashion, and I’m not seeing similar shoes on the red carpet for the next three months.

    • Jessica Chastain was wearing those hiddies at some Fashion Week event, too, which I saw a pic of on the Fug Girls website. So, my eyes already hurt once from those, and I am working up vengeful feelings towards them. GO AWAY, you don’t match anything, you awful things.

  • Her lip color is making my eyes bleed.

    • 3boysful

Add the eye makeup, and with that horrible lip, she’s looking a little like the Joker.

I am sad, because I really like her.

      • H3ff

        I’m thinking Ronald McDonald…

  • Out.  That lip color can be seen from orbit. And those shoes are an abomination unto the Lord.

  • It looks like a chorus costume from a bad production of Anything Goes.

    • kschwarting

You have a point, but as someone who works with theatrical costumers, not a one of them would dare turn in that schmatta.

  • Sobaika

I think a lot of the Cat Deeley love comes from people who watch SYTYCD. She’s a fantastic host and makes it look easy, I’m rooting for her at the Emmys. On the show you get a better sense of her style too, it can be pretty experimental. I read that she doesn’t use a stylist and does her own thing a lot. Anyway, she’s darling and can do no wrong as far as I’m concerned.

    • MelVT

Totally agree.  Count me among those who loves them some Cat.’

      Hate her shoes, though.  Yeech.

      • mhleta

Me too. I’d hang out with her any time. She seems like a really fun person.

    • MidArmJewel

I am with you on this. I loves me some Cat Deeley!

    • megara1028

    • ecallaw1977

I don’t always love her style, but I admire the chances she takes–she’s rarely boring.  And she is one hell of a host.  I love that show.

    • mmgk

Yes! I love her.  She just comes across as so warm and genuine.  All without coming off as bland.  Something hard for people to accomplish, I think.

    • oohsparkley!

Love, love, love her too!  Her style suits her wonderful personality. And I sincerely like the look too, but admit I’m biased. Love that dancing show also.

    • you’renotmysupervisor!!

another IN from me as well. She’s an absolute doll. More personality in her little finger than 6 or 7 starlets put together.

  • SewingSiren

I like the longer version much better. Without the sophisticated length and black tights  (which give it a Spanish goth vibe) it turns into a run of the mill girls party frock.

    • j_anson

This is exactly right. I get that the original length might not be flattering to everyone, but it’s also intrinsic to the vibe the dress is intended to give off. Without it you just have a party dress with too much fringe on it. This is a dress where, if you don’t like the length, you just need to move on to another dress.

  • Anna Tree

HATE THOSE SHOES. (sorry for the all caps) OUT.

  • elemspbee

OUT. so ugly–hair, dress, and awful awful shoes.

  • A. W.

My mother says that Cat’s clothing always looks “off the rack,” as if she just got back from shopping at Filene’s for a party dress. She always looks stylish but something about her makes even the most lovely of dresses (this Shoji number included, such a luxurious dress!) look like second-tier retail. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.

  • G

I have no idea who she is, but I looked her up.  35??!!  I was about to say – Girl, you’re too old for that hairdo – I still think it is unflattering and the whole look is a mess.  OUT.

    • Lisa_Cop

I was just thinking the same thing about her hair. Those long locks (with extensions) are best worn by women under age 30. But she’s 35? She look close to or at 40, methinks.

  • The hair is horrible and such a poor choice for this neckline. I want to love this, because I love Tadashi dresses, but she’s styled it so wrong. No, sweetie, it just isn’t working. OUT

  • velomango

I, um, really like the shoes and would totally wear them. (disclaimer: I wore Birkenstocks to work yesterday…so though I love love love to read and look at fashion, my instincts require some honing – hence my devotion to TLo.)

However, the total look overall is an Out.

  • hillmad

Who is she? What does she do? Why does her head look so enormous? Why are her shoes covered in upholstery? So many questions…

    • Sobaika

Former model, host of So You Think You Can Dance, Emmy nominee, all-around gracious lovely human being. I seriously adore her.

  • OUT. C’mon that is wrong from head to toe. Even the original dress is hideous.

  • janetjb

Cat, you usually look better than this: OUT.

The dress is more interesting in the longer length.

  • antheapena

OUT. She would be SO easy to style well, I don’t understand. Nearly always underwhelming. Change the california hair too

  • Judy_J

OUT.  She should have put her hair up.  And I hate those shoes with a passion. (and again, a size too big.)  Dress looks better on the model.  Ugh.

  • Jepham

I’m pretty sure Cat Deeley wore this dress on SYTYCD a couple of weeks ago. I wish I still had the show on my DVR so I could see what shoes she wore with it. I’m pretty sure she had on different shoes and her hair and make-up looked much better.  It wasn’t one of my favorite looks of hers but she looked better than she looks in these pictures. She is a fabulous MC and deserves the Emmy, IMO.

  • You guys seem just a *little* upset!
    I agree- OUT!

  • OUT.

    Who is this woman?

    • mshesterp

She’s the host for the dance show “So you think you can dance” on Fox and she is FANTASTIC.  One of the most natural hosts for a “game show” or reality competition show ever, and should’ve have one the emmy about 10 times by now.  She’s a magical fairy creature.  I’m totally showing my bias for both Cat and the show.

I always want her to look better, and she never quite gets it right, but I appreciate her tries.  She puts in the effort.

      • Lisa_Cop

She’s very charming and spontaneous on SYTYCD and always lovely to the dancers. For a dance show (where the judges wear nothing remarkable) it’s always a pleasure to see Cat shimmying out to the opening credit music and see what she is wearing. On that show, she is a fashion goddess. I always look forward to seeing what she’ll wear ( as much as to the often unremarkable dancing).

  • dress_up_doll

Cat reminds me of Minnie Pearl in this look. All she needs is a big ol’ fugly hat. I like the runway version so much more. This dress is not for everyone. I think the trick is in the styling.

  • teensmom99

Out but I kinda love the shoes.  Not the dress, though.

  • suzq

It reads “Miss Kitty at the OK Corral” to me.

  • pugluv

  • I’m a huge fan of hers, but even I have to say ugh. OUT

  • Jangle57

Afghan hound hair in a fussy dress with ugly shoes.  OUT

  • mhleta

Cat Deely is a model and host of So You Think You Can Dance which just wrapped its 10th? season last night. She’s great at her job. She has a wonderful, bubbly personality and a charming British accent. She’s incredibly tall and lanky and takes some wonderful fashion risks. Her syle can be a bit uneven, which this look certainly bears testament too. Having said that, I never ever see her phone it in. She may make your ass itch with matchy lipstick and weird shoes, but you’ll never see her look like she didn’t even bother to try. I appreciate her for that.

    • Sobaika

I think it was the ninth season! Speaking of which, I loved her dress last night. Very disco-mini fun.

  • The dress is very ‘Lady Mary got her skirt caught in the motor door on her way to dinner’, and the hair is atrocious.

  • julnyes

As a TV personality she is quite endearing; but I’m sorry to say this outfit is an OUT.

  • DinaSews

She is either fantastic or a hot mess, never in between.  OUT.

  • Le_Sigh

Nope.  OUT.  Great colors, but she makes it boring somehow.

  • LondonMarriott

Those shoes are HIDS.  Not having watched SYTYCD, why is she so popular?  What is it about her?  She seems very sweet and cute as a button, but her personality must be off the charts.

    • Sobaika

      It really is though.

Crowning myself President of the Cat Deeley Appreciation Club.

      • Sara LaBatt

I’ll join!  Love Cat, she is such a great host and even makes Nigel and Mary bearable.

    • megara1028

Basically, her personality is off the charts. In addition to being awesome at her job, hilarious, and someone I’d pay cash money to be stuck in an elevator with, she clearly cares deeply for the dancers on the show. She is a huge reason SYTYCD is the only competition show I watch anymore, because there’s a palpable sense that she wants the very best for everyone up there and it’s infectious.

      • pookiesmom

        Well said!

    • pookiesmom

What everyone else has said. I have the biggest friend crush on her. She is genuine and witty (and British!), and you can tell how much she actually cares about the contestants. I love all of the judges on that show (even Mary Murphy, I must admit. She can be grating but i get the impression that she actually cares about dance and is not just hamming it up for the cameras like other judges who fill her “good cop” role on shows like this.), but Cat is the beating heart of the show. She has a great rapport with all of the regular and guest judges. You can tell she’s a legitimately good person who feels lucky every day to have landed the job she has.

    • Lisa_Cop

She is funny, charming & spontaneous as a host. Not afraid of poking gentle fun of the judges. If I remember correctly, she was also the MC at the huge concert marking the 10 year anniversary of Princess Di’s death.

  • twocee

That is some serious ugly there, from the hair to the makeup to the dress to the shoes.  I’d say burn those shoes, but they’re probably treated with the same fire retardant as my grandmother’s couch.

  • GorgeousThings

I love me some Cat Deeley, but I don’t love this outfit. Like Sobaika, I’ll be rooting for her come Emmy time, because she seems so nice, and because she had the stones to tell the audience to “Fucking SHUT UP!” on British TV.

But for this one time, I gotta go with OUT.

  • fireontiger

That dress was less offensive before the bottom layer was removed – it had better proportions. Out.

  • Pants_are_a_must

She is so tall. I don’t understand why she always seem to dress like she needs to elongate her torso even further. Also, that lipstick is heinous on her. OUT.

  • kat89

    Who is she?

    • pookiesmom

She’s the host of So You Think You Can Dance. Hands down the best reality show host I’ve ever seen.

  • out.  she’s not very interesting to me at all i don’t get the requests for more of her.

  • VeryClaire

Am I the only one who likes the shoes?

  • Lilithcat

She looks dreadful!  The whole thing — dress, hair, shoes — is a mess.

  • Who?

  • CheriCPat

Out.  In the longer length, the dress has a nice vintage vibe.  Shorter, it looks like a little girls’ ugly party dress.  Hair is unremarkable, at best.  Shoes and lipstick are too hideous to look at long enough to form comments.

  • I have a thing about lip glosses, sticks, stains. This color is working with her skin tone. But alas, in context with that dress so red fire engines pull over for it, it’s got to go.

  • VioletFem

OUT. Ugly shoes, ugly dress. She normally dresses better than this.

  • Joyce VG

    IN just because.

  • ojosazules

Disco night at the saloon? Girls gone bad on the wagon train? Pioneer day in Bahrain?

  • m0r0

Blech on all fronts. And what is up with her upper lip?

  • poggi

She should wear black stockings, then she’d look exactly like a live version of one of those lady-leg novelty lamps.

  • Laura Nugent

In!  I think that while the shoes are a lot, they’re better than boring nude pumps or peep-toes.

  • OUT. But what she wore last night on the finale was fantastic. These shoes are hideous, dress is not her dress…

  • Megan A Pugmire

Maybe I’m crazy, but I like the shoes and the dress. I bet they looked better in person. I can agree on the hair, though.

  • crash1212

OUT. Only good thing about this look is the good sense to cut off that last layer of fringe/lace thereby making it shorter. In the words of TLo – now my eyes are mad at me.

  • I’m ok with the shoes with that dress but the hair kills it. I love Cat Deely’s style usually, but this is an OUT.

  • kolokOlchik

    sad drapes dress

  • formerlyAnon

Her hair pushes it over into OUT. Shame because I like the dress. (Think I liked it better long, but that probably depends on the proportions of the wearer.)

That dress cries out for hair close to the head: a 20s bob or 30s finger waves or almost anything less overwhelming than the hair she’s wearing.

The shoes seem to me (someone who reverts to matchy matchy) a reasonable *theoretical* choice to wear with the dress because of the call out to texture but they are surely unattractive.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

It takes a really dedicated stylist to make such a beautiful woman look this bad.  Burn the dress AND the shoes, Cat.  And find a new stylist.

  • PinkLemon

man. fashion is so arbitrary. this is so blase’ on her, but might be amazing on someone else. OUT

  • ChelseaNH

OUT.  The dress needs the extra layer to avoid looking juvenile, the lipstick is wrong and the shoes are horrible.

  • mshesterp

yep, it totally, totally is.  She is just so natural.  you’d have to see her in action to get it.  it’s hard to be so good and yet look so unpracticed!

  • pookiesmom

I love her so much I can’t bear to give her an out. I can’t in good conscience give her an in, though, either. So I’ll just sit here and stare at the ceiling, then.

  • j_anson

OUT. I disagree with every single one of the choices here – the modifications to the dress (I get the logic but it didn’t actually work to make the dress look awesomer on her, so…), the accessories, the hair. All the good stuff is intrinsic (pretty blonde, pretty dress) and all the choices are bad.

  • MzzPants

She looks fine….but somehow it all seems too twee for her.  OUT.

  • e jerry powell

She looks like a ridiculously blonde Anne Hathaway for some reason.

  • piecesofconfetti

    OUT. Too much.

  • ringthing

Out, I think the dress is ugly and I’m sick to death over it with cocker spaniel hair.

  • Out.

  • I love the shoes. But not with that dress. It looks like curtains and kind of matronly curtains at that.

    • Monabel

As a matron, I resent you impugning my curtains.

  • marilyn

Out.  I was okay with the busy dress, but the hippie-huarache shoes with heels and the hippie hair kill it.  I don’t dare about her lips.

  • miagain

    who is she?

  • Cathy S

I liked the model length dress better. Those shoes are horrible. I’m underwhelmed. Out.

  • Judy_S

I like the dress but the hair is drowning it. It’s an anti-werq and people I’ve never heard of don’t get away with that. OUT.

  • JimMcC

I’m voting IN. I don’t like the shoes much, and the lipstick is too red, but she’s #1 on the list of ladies I might switch teams for AND I really love the dress. So yes…IN.

  • Tracy_Flick

Good lord, that dress looks like a lampshade in a Texas whorehouse.

  • kalisa

I had to look up on wikipedia to see who Cat Deeley is. And yah, underwhelmed, mos def.

  • kimmeister

Out, just because the shoes are so awful.  I’m glad she at least had the sense to ditch the last tier of the skirt.

Itchy butts make me think of my cat Rubi.  I’ve been calling her “scooty-butt” because she keeps doing a funny scoot across the floor because her rump is itchy.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

      oh dear. think worms?

  • Violina23

In, but barely. I don’t disagree with anything said above, but she still looks cute

  • TheOriginalLulu

Those must be the ugliest fucking shoes I have ever seen in my life.

  • That’s the first Tadashi Shoji dress I’ve seen that is straight up ugly.  To be fair, her styling doesn’t help.

    SO out.

  • So – agree on the hair, the shoes, etc. I like the dress, but I think the real mistake was in taking off the bottom layer. That extra layer gave the dress a beautiful line which, if styled properly, would have been been stunning on her. As it is, the length of the dress is not flattering. Sometimes you really need to pay attention to the way the designer presents a dress and take your cues from that.

  • Monabel

  • ThaliaMenninger

Dear Cat: If you want to look like a chandelier in a whorehouse, you’ve succeeded.

  • snarkykitten

    she looks kinda drunk

  • FashionShowAtLunch

Honestly she is just so charming, delightful, and lovely that I uniformly love what she’s wearing, even when I hate it. She looks alternately cracked out and stunning on SYTYCD, and is just such a joy to watch. Seriously. Among reality tv hosts, she blows them all out of the water.

  • mjude

who is she?  shoes are awful

  • TSkot

That hair ruins a beautiful dress: OUT

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i’m trying to figure out what they did to the dress [other than shorten it, of course] so it went from beautiful & elegant on the first model to raucous & rococo on the second model-hyphen. i cant see anything else, the difference in color is probably a difference in lighting. the subtracted hem length does of course add to the problem but that shouldnt be all of it. i would think there isnt an exceptionally large degree of disproportion between both women in terms of size & height. all the normal go tos dont make any sense here. can it really be the hair?

maybe it’s the hair. i’ll leave it to someone else to say the shoes cos i kinda sorta like the shoes. not as much as others i’ve seen by MvdH, but i almost always like chunky platforms. still–this whole outfit’s dive from runway subtlety into the lower stratosphere of gaud is bitty bits of breathtaking.

    • formerlyAnon

I’m voting for the hair. A style close to the head (finger waves effect?) & well above the shoulders.

  • melanie0866

    Old West Whorehouse.

She is VERY hit or miss with her style choices, and yet this seems to fall right in the middle for me? I actually like the dress on her, but I don’t like the hair, make-up, or shoes with it. I suppose I give it an underwhelmed IN for pulling off a dress (and only the dress) that I more than likely would not like in other circumstances.

  • oohsparkley!

    In. What you said.

  • I don’t tend to take the 80s hair metal hair seriously on anyone, especially female. She always looks like a groupie with a very generous patron to me, and I know she’s smarter than that. Oh, out, that dress is tacky.

  • MilaXX

Out! I like Cat but none of this works

  • tired_mommy

    Lampshade. Out.

  • MilaXX

Agreed on the show she is mostly cute, but on the RC she always get it right

  • Lisa Kramp

Ditch the Jerry Hall hair and the fugly shoes. OUT like a light!

  • I love her but not unconditionally: Out.

  • I have an ENORMOUS girl crush on Cat. I absolutely love her.
It pains me to have to type: OUT. (but it’s so, so out)  🙁

  • lalahartma

    Out.  I didna like.

  • My undying love for Cat Deeley forces me to vote this one IN.

  • Martha Deutsch

Out. Once again, lamp shade in a whore house dresses are good for no one.

  • KC

I think the love comes from watching So You Think You Can Dance. She is FANTASTIC and sweet and actually seems to care about the program and the dancers. She’s very empathetic and has good chemistry with everyone she talks to, she comes up with funny cute things to say. I really think without her the show wouldn’t be half as good. She and (IMHO) Mary Murphy (who is your crazy, but lovable, drunk aunt) are kind of the heart of the show.

  • OUT. She cannot be forgiven for those shoes.

  • You bitches are crazy, super IN!

  • nannypoo

It looks like the national costume from an obscure Central American country and the shoes are awful. Hair and makeup are bad, too.

  • She’s………..OUTTA HERE!  The ump is jerking her thumb over her shoulder.

I can’t find a thing to praise about this look.  Not one.

  • Out. It’s too much froofery and the hair is awful. And the lipstick clashes.

    Love her face though.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

It’s going to be an OUT from the BKs but I’m going to swim against the tide and vote IN because we Brits in the US of A have to stick together!  😉

  • Immediate no which leads to an immediate OUT.

  • boomchicabowwow

I firmly believe that people would not be so vociferous in her defense if she were not HANDS DOWN THE MOST AWESOME TV HOST WORKING IN TELEVISION TODAY!  As I am also of that opinion, I can say that I would praise her wardrobe choices to the heavens even if she were wearing a dropped-crotch velvet jumpsuit with a peplum and metalic platform sandels.  Some people really are that endearing.

  • Trisha26

Out. (And in future you don’t have to cover her for me.)

  • up-do, softer lip, simple shoes, and this would have had much more of a chance of being decent.

  • OUT.

  • Lisa_Cop

OUT. If she had left the dress at its original longer length and worn her hair up this might have been passable (minus the fugly shoes). But as it is, this look is not working.

  • SuzBald

    O. U. T. I’m sorry about it, but there it is.  Draggy lips.

  • Out on this one, but I appreciate her efforts.  I can’t wait for the cocker spaniel hair trend to be over though…

  • bitterk

Cat Deeley is a great reality TV show host.  She is bubbly, witty and always wears something interesting so i understand why the kittens want to see more of her.   On SYTYCD, her attire is hit or miss.  Unfortunately, her first appearance on TLo is a big miss.  Those shoes should be burned.  OUT.  And this from a fan.

  • Those are some really ugly shoes.  The dress looks better in the runway length, but maybe Cat is too short.  It looks to me like the underlining or slip is showing.  I poke my sister in the ribs in church when her slip is showing.

OUT.  And I don’t even know who she is.  Is she one of those people who is famous for being famous?

  • Yeah, that’s a whole lotta look.  You can do red, and you can do lace, and you can do fringe.  But you CANNOT do red, fringe and lace at the same time!  Yikes!

  • She could wear a garbage bag paired with tissue boxes for shoes and I’d still say IN.
    Love her.

  • unbornfawn

Looked at the picture and read your comments and pretty much have to agree. Ugly shoes, She’s all lips and the dress is OK, fits nice, but meh. OUT.

  • demidaemon

OUT. Hate, hate the fringe skirt. I’m also not terrible fond of this color on her. I think she looks better in paler colors and simpler silhouettes.

  • She should have kept the bottom tiers of the dress and hacked off those sleeves instead; right now she looks stumpy.  And FFS, do something with that hair.  Start with washing it, maybe.

    • Thathoodwink

      Stumpy? Please.

  • Judih1

FUGLY. The dress is decent enough on the model, but Cat Deely doesn’t has the body shape for it. Plus all the other elements you listed – the hair, the shoes, the make up – just made a bad situation worse.

Hurts my eyes to look at her – OUT.

Plus kinda on the twee side, don’t you think?

  • dashransome

Gak!  I love Cat Deeley and feel like she’s worn some very interesting looks on the dancing show.  This, however, is hideous for all the reasons you mention.  Are there no pictures of her in anything better?

  • problem with the dress is that it’s been amputated.  It needed the 3rd tier to balance it so it needed to be worn by someone taller (as in runway model taller). I completely agree with the assessment of the lipstick. The shade is too matchy to the dress and it’s also wrong for her skin tone. She needs a red with  more blue undertones (from what I can see of the veins in the feet she’s cool toned and that red’s too orangey/warm).  The shoes need to be burned (I cannot wait for the platform stripper heels trend to die so I can once again buy wearable shoes), and the detailing in the dress cries out for a sleek but not pinhead half-up or up do.  So yeah, this is prom dress gone wrong unfortunately.

  • OUT!

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I love Cat Deeley, but this is an OUT.

  • AC

This is sad. The proportions of the dress and the size of her hair make her look like a bobble-head. Out.

  • OUT, out out out.

  • Larkin21

I actually like the shoes. Don’t like the dress much, though, and I agree about the lip color. Out.

  • she always looks terrible

  • PeaceBang

LOVE the shoes. I am ignoring everything else.

  • ccm800

OUT as all that. How she managed to make a dress to long and too short at once is beyond me. Too long in the torso and overall length but shortening ruined the whole thing. Yikes.

  • Lynn Jiao

Her dress looks like a lampshade and her shoes look like a unicorn threw-up rainbows on some sort of alligator-cheetah hybrid…. sorry but noooo.
