Emmys Wrapup: Kerry Washington in V. Westwood

Posted on September 24, 2012

As we wind down our coverage of the 2012 Emmys red carpet, we think it’s safe to say that this was a banner year in terms of style. There was a lot of variation in shape and color, instead of the normal lemming-like results of “This year, everyone’s wearing red/black/cocktail dresses/sheers!” And there were no real disasters to be seen. In fact, for some odd reason, the one consistent issue that seemed to pop up again and again was bad hair.

Kerry Washington attends the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in a Vivienne Westwood gown paired with a Kotur clutch.

We were ten seconds away from declaring this a WERQ, but one look at her hair and the snaps died on our fingers. The dress is deceptively simple, but has a lot of impact. It fits and flatters, and that blush color is amazing against her skin tone. We like the cheekiness of the clutch, and her earrings are pretty. But her hair’s got too many flyaways, something that was practically an epidemic on the RC last night. Plus, from straight on, it looks a little lop-sided.

We feel a little bad singling her out for this (especially since Julie Bowen and Ashley Judd made us both sit up and go, “What the fuck is going on with her hair?”), but really, we wanted to feature the dress because it’s pretty, and realized she made a good poster child for the one thing that drove us nuts last night: sloppy hair paired with gorgeous gowns. Unlike some of the other offenders, however, all she needs is a re-pin and a pat-down to smooth things back in place.

  • She’s so beautiful that I can say this without worrying that it will hurt her feelings (because she cares what I think!) but it looked like she took the train to the Emmys and fell asleep with her head pressed up against the window.

    • DCSheehan

I so now believe that’s what actually happened.

  • I love that dress.  Are hairdresssers revolting against Hollywood?

  • DylanCurtis

Loved that dress. Hair makes her look like she recently went through chemo or something.

    • turtleemily

I was going to say that it looks like she forgot to put her wig on.

      • KC

I kinda take offense to this comment. I respect her for wearing her natural hair out, its just the way some black women’s hair is…my hair is like that and I don’t think we should feel ashamed for wearing it out if we want to.

        • There’s no reason to be bothered- I guess people have different ways in expressing views. For me, the offense isn’t taken from her wearing her hair out naturally. Whether it was the weather or another factor (like a negligent image team member), we’ve just all seen Kerry look MUCH better on the RC, and her hair caused an entire miss with the rest of her ensemble. It totally totally threw the impact of the look way off.

          I still love her though!

        • turtleemily

I just meant the way it’s pinned up looks like what you’d do before putting on a wig; no offense to her hair was intended. I actually really like the looking-over-the-shoulder pic. It’s an awkward style straight-on, though.

          • KC

Okay I see, sorry I didn’t mean to seem sensitive! 🙂

  • BazoDee

I just had this exact conversation with a co-worker. She looks amazing but the hair!! How many times did we say that last night!

  • SewingSiren

I like the hair.  WERQ for me.

  • Sobaika

She looks so beautiful that for me the hair is irrelevant.

  • Can we blame it on the extra hot weather?

    • greyhoundgirl

I was wondering that too.  It was 100+ degrees but not humid–but sweating can make some hair go lank or frizzy.

    • twocee

My thought exactly.  I think of Julie Bowen’s hair — it looked like curls that had been soaked in sweat and then air-dried.  She might have looked quite nice before getting in the limo to come to the venue, but 112 degrees is going to make anyone’s hair look pretty bad.

    • annieanne

That was my first thought. 120 degrees and my head would be so sweaty there’s no amount of hairspray in LA that would keep the flyaways under control.

    • MissAnnieRN

I think some of the hair problems were related to that.  But Julie Bowen and Ashley Judd – that was not weather.  That was poor decision making on the part of more than one person.

Dont forget Connie Britton…That hair was crazy bad!  Crazy helmet hair bad!

        • Call me Bee

Yeah–that was an odd style…but straight out of 1965, really.

  • stagmania

Well, the weather there was apparently hellish. Perhaps the extreme heat (+ humidity?) was messing with the hair.

    • LA is never humid, but it was super-hot. The fact that so many of the women had hair issues last night points to circumstances beyond their control.

      • Amandack

LA isn’t Florida humid, but there’s definitely a wetness to the summer air here.  They said it was 94 on the red carpet, and I’d say yesterday humidity was mid-range for LA.  Still, with visibly hairsprayed heads in abundance, I don’t think the ladies can (fully) blame the weather.  To me, a lot of them looked like they did their hair themselves.  I know they didn’t, and they paid someone handsomely to give them that look, but that was my impression.

      • This weekend it was both hot and humid in Los Angeles; this summer has had long stretches of hot humid days. I moved here to get away from the humidity, dagnabbit!

      • Pfft, we’ve been having swampy weather lately.  I’d so much rather have the dry heat but it was HUMID this weekend.  It’s absolutely unnatural.

  • agentilities

props to Ms. Washington for wearing her own hair (I can’t tell what’s in the back) on the red carpet

  • Imasewsure

She’s one of the actresses who always looks too unhealthy/skinny to me but in this she looks lovely… too bad about the hair….

  • afabulous50

Quite honestly – I don’t see it.  To me she looks dull and plain.

  • Emily Giovanni

I heard it was approximately 1,000 degrees there (that is just a ballpark estimate), so that may explain some of the sketchy hair situations.

    • Lora Martin

It was about a million degrees yesterday, plus way more humidity than we are used to, and I saw that there were huge fans blowing.  That probably explains some of the hair trouble.

      • sk8tfan

That may explain why Ashley Judd and a few other normally stunning women used shellac to keep their hair in place.

        • ojosazules

But the shellac wasn’t the problem with Ashley- her hair looked like an effing habitat, like she was trying to sneak her gerbil into the show. So bad.

          • makeityourself

The hair wasn’t Ashley’s only problem. I put her in TLo’s category of “unrecognizable.”

  • I give her a WERQ! I think the dress is stunning, and the hair and makeup are very pretty, despite a few flyaways.

  • Anathema_Device

This tend of not looking too “done” seems to be reaching its peak. Hopefully the yoga-hair thing will start to peter out. She looks pretty gorgeous except for the hair. I won’t blame the weather b/c this has been a red-carpet trend for the past few years.

    • Thank you – that’s what I was saying as well. And even if it were entirely the weather to blame- what do celebs have an image team for?

  • teensmom99

Because she is one of the most beautiful women ever, this is a nitpick but I wouldn’t have minded a darker lip.  Like others, I thought it looked like her hair had been slept on but since she is so gorgeous and the dress so great on her it hardly mattered.  Notice I said hardly–I understand that at TLo Inc. things like that matter a lot and I love you for it.

    • jabes

Thank you for saying that–I was ridiculously distracted by her lack of lipstick.

  • call_me_schmeg

“snaps died on our fingers.” can i say how much i love this?

  • neofashionista

With the exception of Julie Bowen and Ashley Judd whose hairs were inexcusable I feel a lot of the stars hair was less than perfect because the weather absolutely sucked an it was scorching hot so it all went flat in the heat

  • SapphoPoet

    I really want that clutch.

  • mjude

blame the bad hair at the emmys on the heat?

  • Her dress is gorgeous, but for the first time I think I’ll say that it actually looks a little TOO BIG for her. Like she could’ve used a dart here and there.

  • Belvane

It was 104 in L.A. yesterday, and I have a feeling that some quick adjustments were made to hair that collapsed in a sweaty heap.

    • alyce1213

??  Temp hit about 92 at its hottest, but mostly it was in the 80s.

      • Belvane

A friend of mine said it was 104 where she is, but that may have been in the Valley rather than L.A. proper.

      • I dunno where you are but where I live, which is closer to the coast than Hollywood, it was in the mid 90s.  I think Sunday maxed out at 95, so it may have been a few degrees hotter inland.  Can’t imagine it was anything less than 98 on that asphalt.

  • unbornfawn

Glad you brought this up. Not only at the Emmys last night. Bad lady star hair has been epidemic lately!

  • sk8tfan

I recently attended a local skating competition (hence, my moniker). The rink was full of vendors who sold nothing more than services to make hair look attractive and stay in place while the athletes flew across the ice at breakneck speeds and performed jumps and spins. Perhaps these vendors should set up shop near the red carpet.

  • I have Opinions about the hair complaints by our fearless leaders:

I think this (and, on the other side, Ashley Judd) is exactly why young women avoid putting their hair up: it reminds us of putting hair up for exercise and yoga or of looking like our grandmothers (who, in my case, were rather stodgy). The idea of getting your hair set just seems very out of date, or prommy. Plus, a lot of effort goes into making it look beautiful down! Straighteners, curling irons, serum, wax, etc.

As someone with wavy/curly hair, wearing it up doesn’t highlight its beauty, it hides it in a bun. I love curly hair down, and most of the women who wear it down, these days, aren’t wearing it stick straight, but in gentle waves.

    Cocker spaniel hair forever!!

    • MilaXX

I don’t mind hair down but the cocker spaniel hair could be avoided by putting it in back instead of hanging down ovdr the shoulders and hiding the beautiful dress you borrowed.

  • Judy_S

    Stunning. Ineffable.

  • Stubenville

I think a bolder clutch, colored gemstone earrings and a bolder lip would have elevated it a bit more.  Maybe we can get TLo to grade on a curve, in which case it’s a WERQ!

  • crash1212

Well. She’s getting a WERQ from me. Girlfriend looked stupendous. It was a thousand degrees on that red carpet, if a few flyaways is all she had after getting out of a car and sweating her way down the path…so what. This bitter kitten is not going to de-snap for that.

    •  I agree! I love T&L and this site (I waste hours and hours on here on a regular basis!) so I do get this is what they do, but usually, even if I disagree with their analysis, I can at least see where they’re coming from. In this instance, though, I just don’t get it! What flyaways?? And what possible definition of the word ‘sloppy’ can be applied to any part of her look here?!?

  • Perhaps all the celebs were required to walk through a rain shower, then through a wind tunnel before arriving on the red carpet?  That’s the only way I can reason out some of the hair.

  • MilaXX

I thought she looked really pretty, but would have liked a tiny bit more color on the lips. I agree the hair was a little limp, but it beats 10lbs of weave.

  • MissMariRose

Maybe all the Hollywood hair stylists are on strike in solidarity with Chicago teachers and/or NFL referees.

  • Becca Cleary

Guys, I just got two un-mutable ads in a row on your page. For Mitt Romney. FOR MITT ROMNEY. THAT IS SUPER NOT OK.

  • Michael_Jones

You boys must be ready to fall into an Emmys dress-induced coma about now…   Great work today.

  • AlinaValero

if only everything could be solved with a repin and a pat down.

  • Zippypie

I wouldn’t be surprised if she had her hair down and it melted into a scalp plastered mess so she quickly had it pulled up.  It’s kind of that look.  Otherwise, the dress is stunning and I love the lizard on the clutch!  Humor elevates!

  • rjeujune

Is her show still on? I got a major case of hives because of the constant harping on how her gut told her if people told the truth or not. I dropped the show because of her gut, just saying. I’m not crazy about that color on her, unlike TLo.

    •  The show is *not* still on.. at the moment. My *gut* tells me it may return though.. unfortunately 😉

  • I got to the close-up of the clutch and made a little “EEP” sound. I wants it, precious.

  • Oh, poor Kerry. She seriously looks like she’s going bald. Who on earth signed off on this??

  • ccm800

Wow – what a classic frock from VW!  How unusual. Lovely

  • GTrain

Meh. And her pose looks weird to me.

  • guest2visits

She was gorgeous. The stray hair on the sides did catch ones attention – you just wanted so badly for someone to reach over
and give it a lttle tuck.  She was probably totally unaware of it.

  • bitterk

I can’t get pass the hair style or lack thereof.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

she looks so beautiful i didnt even see the hair.

    • I thought the same as you did.  I never even noticed the hair, I was so taken with the dress.  But she still needed a great hairstyle with that gown.

  • LilyPad

I thought this gown needed some lightness up top, maybe in the straps? A lighter, complementary fabric or something like that. Kerry Washington is stunningly beautiful

  • I don’t think the hair was bad enough to distract from the overall amazing effect. Her and Jessica Pare are tied for best dressed, imho.

  • janiemary

She looked stunningly gorgeous when presenting an award… even her hair… which I want to say was not pulled back and up.  I didn’t see any of the red carpet so maybe she got a quick hair tune-up before going on stage.  At any rate, I thought she was perfection!!

  • I actually don’t think this dress flatters very well at all, and yeah the hair is tragic. Beautiful woman, disappointing look…

  • ZnSD

oh look, I did my hair myself. 🙁

  • Call me Bee

I saw her E! interview on the red carpet–she is just darling.  And stunning in this dress.  The hair bothers me not at all.  Her whole look was sexy, elegant and little cheeky, as you say, with that cute clutch.  I say WERQ all the way!

  • She is one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen.

  • the ugly hair trend has really taken hold in holly wood.  will it never end?  i adore that clutch!
