Cathy Cambridge in Jonathan Saunders

Posted on September 17, 2012

Oh, Mrs. Cathy! Don’t you and Bill look all modern and shit?

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge arrives at Honiara International Airport during their Diamond Jubilee tour of the Far East in Honiara, Guadalcanal Island. Catherine wore a Jonathan Saunders dress.

Jonathan Saunders Pre-Fall 2012 Collection/Models: Ros Georgiou and Lara Mullen

Actually, that’s not quite true. Bill looks all modern and shit. You look all charmingly retro. Sort of.

We frickin’ LOVE that dress and love that she chose something so bold to wear. But one look at the Jackie Kennedy-esque matching hat, shoes, and bag, and we both got stunning migraines instantaneously. Way to bring a good dress down, Duchess.

And don’t come back at us with “tradition” or “rules.” There’s nothing in the job description that says she has to accessorize like an American First Lady 50 years ago.

Still, we do love that dress. And Bill’s suit.

I thought she had an Amish bonnet on…

    • lovelyivy

Yep, I figured they were flying to a place where women traditionally cover their hair and this was her effort. If she wore that hat on purpose when she didn’t have to I will lose some confidence in her judgement.

      • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

I think they went directly to church, in the Solomon Islands. Later she changed to a sundress.

    • VeryClaire

Me too. TLo were too kind about the hat.

    • GorgeousThings

I thought it was an Amish bonnet crossed with a Mamie-Eisenhower style skullcap. It’s hideous regardless. I do love the dress, though.

    • Rachel Sawyer

I thought she was wearing a yarmulke.

  • kaycem

are duchesses allowed to wear strappy sandals?

  • mountainFashionista

A rare misstep from the Duchess!  I’m so blinded by her awful accessories that I can’t really appreciate the merits of the dress.

On a side note: I love the yellow booties in the model shot, and I’m a proud member of the “I (usually) hate booties” camp.

    • A. W.

Those booties are fab for sure, one of the first times I’ve seen a chic Mondrian-inspired item. Too many pretenders to the YSL original.

    • agentilities

I say we give the models a WERQ

    • mshesterp

I think because they don’t really look like booties because of the multiple tones.  That’s why they’re so awesome.

  • Sobaika

I wish the hat, clutch, and shoes were in colors that went well with the dress. Other than that, fab.

    • AudreysMom

I swear Cathy C must practice that “holding onto the bag so the ring shows perfectly in all pictures” 50 times before bed every night. It never fails.

  • A. W.

There’s no doubt she tried to serve up Jackie O realness here and fell flat. Fabulous dress though, that color is great on her.

  • janetjb

The hat is an unusual choice for her, but the clutch and shoes are not surprising.
He has looked very good on this tour.

    • Introspective

Its the new suits. He lost the double breasted duds and moved into this century. And were all better for it…

  • uprightcitizen

The bag and shoes are kind of nice … picking out the smallest bit of color in the dress the way they do. But the hat and the “I just wrapped these bits around a curling iron five seconds ago” hair are a bridge too far. She does look like she’s “Breaking Amish,” but kept the bonnet. I do like that she’s put on a bit of weight (maybe four pounds?) and now looks healthy.

  • CassandraMortmain

The hat and the hair bring down the whole look.  They’re just awful.  I think this is the first time that I’ve looked at her and thought she really missed the mark.

But Bill is really rocking the single-breasted, more form-fitting suits.  That’s the prince we all want to see!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I agree. The fat hair tendrils and the bonnet make no sense with the rest of her outfit.

  • greymain

is it a royal REQUIREMENT to wear all these jacked up bonnets??????????? geez.

  • ecallaw1977

I haven’t seen him wear a double-breasted suit in a while–please let this mean he’s given them up!  The accessories are irritating, but otherwise she looks phenomenal.  The extra few pounds on her look amazing.  I hate to assume she’s pregnant just because she is looking a bit healthier lately, but that first shot does at least beg the question.

    • SapphoPoet

I doubt that she’s pregnant. Later on in the trip, she and William went to a rainforest and put on climbing harnesses and were hoisted into a tree; I doubt she’d have done that if she were expecting.

      • mountainFashionista

Climbing is usually approved for reasonably fit women well into pregnancy.  Of course, maybe not for princesses…

        • alyce1213

          Too much at stake.

          • Spicytomato1

Just a little bit…only the heir to the throne. No pressure, right?

  • Judy_S

The hat doesn’t work with the hair. Otherwise, nice fresh look for getting off a plane after I assume a zillion hours into I assume a sauna.
This is the first time I have seen her look like a pretty girl instead of a Lady who is aware of every hair and thread in her vicinity, and ready to ask you how do you do with fabulous but shallow sincere interest.  She looks sunny and relaxed and really girlish, and somehow more substantial, as if she might actually have something in her own life to chatter about.

  • VeryClaire

She doesn’t look like Jackie Kennedy, she looks like a Mennonite in that hat! At first I thought it was a head scarf she was required to wear by local custom or something and I was going to give her a pass. Sadly, no. That hat does not go with that dress in any way.

    • makeityourself

Besides, it’s the color of Cream of Wheat. Blech.

    • Aurumgirl

Don’t put the Mennonites down like that.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5UQHEKG5EDX4T6NMARUC565TPQ Amy

Wish she could be sassy and wear edgier shoes like the models and get rid of that thing on her head. That’s scary retro indeed!

  • SapphoPoet

I don’t care for that dress; I think it looks like one of those smocks the airline stewards put on to serve drinks and peanuts (they still do that, don’t they?). And the hat just does not go.

  • VeryClaire

    Is her hair in ponytails????????

    • Fordzo

      OMG, I wish it was.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Enh, I don’t mind. In this instance, I think she looks cute with the retro styling. It’s all working for me.
Him – WHAT a difference these single-breasted suits are making for him. He looks so much more youthful and modern. Don’t know if it was Kate or somebody else who made this decision, or if he secretly reads TLo and decided to listen up, but he looks great!

    • siriuslover

Haha! That would be awesome if Prince William read TLo!

    • mshesterp

He looks super foxy in that first shot, and it’s all due to the suit–and this is someone who rarely finds Wills to be “hot” (unlike his brother Harry, who is drool worthy in my book).

      • TheOriginalLulu

The suit is showing off how long, lean and broad-shouldered he is. Those awful double-breasted suits made him look sort of wide around the middle and aged him like 15 years. He looked like Kate’s uncle escorting her to the party. Now he looks like her foxy husband.

        • Spicytomato1

I completely agree. I was marveling at the difference in him. He looks at least a decade younger.

          • you’renotmysupervisor!!

and a foot taller! my goodness, he’s a dish!

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I wish he’d take it a step further and shave his head, instead of keeping the comb-over

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/W7A5N4G7FDTV5U2KOHBVSB55XI Basket

    What a beautiful dress!

  • siriuslover

Love that dress. Might like the hat but I need a better look at it.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/W7A5N4G7FDTV5U2KOHBVSB55XI Basket

Do you think she is wearing pantyhose?

    • Winter_White

      Looks like it.

I’ve been away for so long — what is the general consensus among the Bitter Kittens here about panty hose?  I’m old enough to miss them:  don’t feel pulled together without them myself…am always surprised to see actresses in glorious evening wear with bare legs.

      • lamireille

I’ve read that they’re back, thanks to Cathy, and I am THRILLED. I think wearing shoes on bare feet is disgusting if the shoes are ever going to be worn again; I don’t see how it’s any different from wearing pants without underwear more than once before washing them. Which isn’t to say I don’t do it (the shoes thing, not the pants), because my daughter refuses to be seen in public with me if I’m wearing pantyhose, but I loathe myself afterwards.

Sorry about the caps but I really have strong feelings about wearing shoes without anything on the feet. They rub and hurt and they get clammy and they are gross gross gross.

        • Winter_White

You daughter “refuses to be seen in public” with you if you’re wearing them?

Yow!  I didn’t realize the kidz had gotten quite that anti-pantyhose.

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/W7A5N4G7FDTV5U2KOHBVSB55XI Basket

I feel your pain.  I have tons of those no-show socks.  They slip down when I walk and I am pulling them up all the time, but I just cannot wear my shoes without anything.  I don’t care if the shoes are canvas/cloth (Toms) still can’t do it.  Only open sandals, way open.

        • http://twitter.com/Sugarbeetle Sugarbeetle

She wears really good sheer hose, I think. The stuff that’s hellua expensive and now almost impossible to find. Also, they snag almost immediately. Gah.

        • nancylee61

I agree! How can you be dressed up with no hose? Sweaty feet in shoes is just gross. It makes no sense tome, the shoes are ruined from swear.

      • SapphoPoet

I loathe pantyhose with the heat of a thousand suns.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I really hate her hair and the bonnet here — so out of place.

  • BrooklynBomber

I’m stunned by the hat. Is she Menonite? In what possible world does it work with that dress? the fabric, the style–everything about the hat is decades old. It looks vintage. Sheesh.

    • Zaftiguana

My first thought was “Is she visiting some sort of religious community and trying to blend in with the natives?” Because I can’t come up with any other possible rational explanation.

    • 3boysful

Whoops–should’ve read your comment before I posted.  I, too, thought from the first photo that she was suddenly Menonite.

  • Anathema_Device

I don’t mind the idea of retro accessories with a modern dress, but that hat is a bit odd. I don’t care for hats worn way back on the head like that.

  • Zaftiguana

That hat is hilariously terrible. The shoes and purse are okay because they’re retro inspired modern pieces. The hat looks like it actually belonged to Bess Truman. It calls out in longing for little matching gloves. Just bizarre.

  • sk8tfan

When I was a little kid in Catholic school, centuries ago, we had to attend morning mass wearing white gloves on our hands and silly little beanies on our heads. Apparently now they just call them fascinators.

  • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

The shoes are standard issue Cathy Cambridge, no? The clutch as well, not surprising. I think she was on the right track to not let those elements compete with the print and color of the dress.

The hat actually kind of charmed me in the first picture. It wasn’t until I saw the side view in the last shot that I started to be skeptical.

Hear hear mountainFashionista: I too am proudly anti-bootie, but those yellow ones on the model are like art. I don’t know if I’d get behind booties on CC here, but still.

  • mjude

i dont quite understand that hat but love the dress.  i think the prince secretly reads TLO cause he is looking great in that suit.

    • MilaXX

That suit is so slimming in him & actually make him look his age. The boxy suits he was wearing made him look old. I secretly wish he would just shave all the hair off. I kinda dig guys with completely bald heads.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I think my sister had an outfit just like that.  Easter, 1968.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Maybe she has been watching the first season of “Mad Men” and accidentally got inspired by Peggy.

  • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

*clap* *clap* *clap* agree with you on all points!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

Yeah, shoes and hat = fail. Too bad. Awesome dress.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I, too was excited, and then I was all, what is that shit on the back of her head.  First fail. It’s a sad day everyone.

  • j_anson

She looks freakin’ adorable. I dunno. I think the matched accessories work for the retro look.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

that hat is hideous, leaning toward the amish bonnet.  love the dress, though.

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I’m not sure Jackie would have worn that….that….head-hugger.  A real, retro pillbox would have looked better than what she’s wearing.  Do women traditionally wear a head covering in Guadalcanal?  Maybe that’s why she’s wearing one.  Between Marisa Tomei the other day and now Cathy C, Jonathan Saunders is certainly getting a lot of press coverage!

  • Wellworn

I love that dress so hard.

  • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

Well…Bill, Bill, Bill. Tired of the Princess getting all the press, eh? That is a KILLAH suit. Seriously, who gets off of planes looking like that? I always looked like I’d just been through the permapress cycle on the dryer.

  • MilaXX

I thought the hat was some sort of required head covering like one of those scarves the Amish wear. I like the dress and might give the shoes a pass, but this is occasion I think if her only option was a tiny clutch then maybe going without a bag would have been better. Now knowing that’s a hat, I think she needs to dump the bag & hat.

  • 3boysful

I could’ve lived with the shoes and clutch, but from the front, that almost-white hat gives the effect of a Mennonite cap!

    But j’ADORE the dress.

  • Spicytomato1

I love this dress. I think I’d love it even more if it had the short/cap sleeves like the yellow version. But I really do not like every other aspect of this look — shoes, hair, hose, hat, clutch, makeup, earrings. Each element brings this vintage/mod dress down — way down — into Frumpyland. Too bad.

  • PastryGoddess

I like Cathy’s version better than Marisa’s.  I think this dress works best short, not long

  • BazoDee

The hat looks like she’s trying to control hair flying away problems. But agreed it is a missstep.

  • http://twitter.com/chylde bellalozza

Love the yellow dress model’s booties! LOVE THEM!!!

  • Judy_J

The Jackie Kennedy accessories don’t bother me one bit.  I love that dress, and I love the way she looks in it.  And Bill’s looking pretty spiffy, too!  They are a very attractive couple.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

That is seriously wacky. The dress is so awesome – love it (and the yellow one too) – but the ‘accessory kit’ she paired it with looks truly bizarre. Does she know that thing is on her head? Cause it looks like maybe it was on her seat on the plane and got stuck to her head during a nap.

    • BrooklynBomber

“Does she know that thing is on her head?” haha!

  • http://twitter.com/TMamBo Therese Bohn

Hey-at least she’s not wearing gloves!  And the accessories aren’t too bad– I think a wide brimmed hat in a blue or green would have been great — but she looks great, and I think she’s getting WIll to dress better!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I’m not wild about the accessories, but they might be better understood in context. Like much of the Pacific, the Solomon Islands are extremely formal (in spite of a history of visual representation that suggests that Pacific Islanders spend most of their time topless and/or entirely naked). Particularly if they’re going to church, women would be expected to dress very traditionally and modestly. Her dress is actually a little short, I think, to be appropriate (not to our eyes, but to those of her hosts.) So it’s good that she balanced it out with such bland accessories. I think for an occasion such as this, erring on the side of ‘boring’ is much better than risking offending one’s hosts.

  • CurbGirl

Cute, vintage-esque dress. But that hat appears to be hastily made out of a luncheon napkin. Origami anyone?

  • Patricia Gillett

Did Bill get a new tailor? He looks great!

  • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

I want her hair. Mine…just won’t do that. it goes KERPOOF!

    • Spicytomato1

I read somewhere recently that she uses extensions. Not sure if I believe that but if it’s true then I feel a little better about my own less than uber-luxurious locks.

      • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

Ah, that makes me feel better, too. My hair is naturally curly and would NEVER just do one big perfect curl like that. It wants to be FREEEEE!

      • formerlyAnon

If she uses them (and I wouldn’t be disappointed, being always under scrutiny requires strenuous measures) she’s been using them for a long time. I haven’t noticed her hair getting better, as long as I’ve been aware of her (not nearly as long as a real “royal watcher,” but years now) her hair’s been fab.

  • ojosazules

    What they said.

  • DesertDweller79

The dress is nice, but the accessories are bad.  I like William’s suit, though. So, it all balances out.

  • ri_dic

Bill: yes. Cathy: no. First time ever.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I have a hat that looks almost exactly like that, but mine is golden yellow instead of beige and mine has little button accents. And I think my hat would have been a better choice. I’d probably keep the shoes as is and swap out the purse for a different neutral – probably brown.

  • CarolinLA

I wonder if anyone shouted “Show us your tits!” when she got off the plane.

    • ojosazules

      So glad you weren’t there.

      • CarolinLA

        Oh come on.  That’s funny.

  • quiltrx

Do NOT like the hat (or back of the head cover, more like), but LOVE the dress…you work that print shit, Cathy!

And GO BILL!  I think someone has been reading T Lo. :)  (probably Gramma Betty, how awesome would that be?)

  • Zippypie

Wills looks hot.  Cathy looks odd.  If she had to wear a hat, that mini Flying Nun is NOT the way to go.  Between the white hat and white pumps, there is a look there….somewhere…

  • guest2visits

The dress is nice but I don’t understand what she’s doing with the hat. Or the hair. Or the shoes. Or the earrings. And then the lei.
The combination of everything is not working.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

FINALLY!  Wills is wearing a suit that shows off the hot bod we all know he has!  Loong overdue.

  • leftcoastpickle

Let’s hope Wills has ditched the double breasted suits for good! He looks fabu, and love her dress, but the hat? Ack.

  • luciaphile

Don’t like the hat, but I kinda love the clutch. On another note, I think Wills has earned a WERQ or two lately. He looks hot here.

  • Trisha26

Yes! Lose the matching accessories and try a cute bootie! Love those color-blocked ones with the orange dress.

  • Peeve

I really hate that print in general, but somehow it looks terrific on Kate!

  • margaret meyers

Bill is wearing a great suit.

  • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

    LOVE Bill’s suit!

Oh, Cath… Cath, Cath, Cath.  It was all good until the hat.  And the shoes.  And the bag.  And the fact that all three of them match.  And that they’re in white.  And none of them go with the dress.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Y73VNX2QZNJVE5MR5KAIMQYKME Kathryn

    Looks like Hutterite headgear.

  • blondie65

Dayum!!  Bill deserves a WERQ here.  (me thinks somebody in Buckingham Palace has been reading TLo!)

  • Judih1

Who made those boooties the model on the right is wearing??? I want them – NOW

  • teensmom99

I’m willing to forget the accessories because that dress looks so good on her.  Perfect, the colors are great, and a little fashion forward.

  • ccm800

In white after labor day – rebel.

  • PhillipWilde

I personally love the sassy hat.  But that’s me.

  • redgauntlet

What’s modern about his suit? No seriously. You’ve got to *explain* some stuff to us ordinary people.

  • RzYoung

That hat is a really ‘but can I still wear my hair down with it’ hat. Wear a hat or don’t wear a hat. Otherwise I love it.

  • Aurumgirl

Are those white shoes?  Jesus wept.

  • snarkykitten

In that first photo, her hat looks like a yarmulke. In the 3rd one, it looks like the hat has little dinosaur spikes.

  • ChristinaRi

Once again — fullness in the middle and the clutch in front of the tummy.

The dress is fun, but I’m really sick of her hairstyle — and everyone else who does this too.   Hair divided on the nape and brought over each shoulder is odd to me.

    • PinkLemon

are you suggesting she’s prego? cuz i’ll admit the first thing i thought was ‘her face looks a bit fuller’.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

Actually, I like the silly little hat, buuuuut, not so much with the matchy shoezy-woozies and purse.

  • LocMama

This is why I can’t see topless photos, sex tapes, or drunken mug shots of celebs.  Here’s Cat looking all prim & proper next to her hot husband & all I can see is her bending over so Wills can rub sunblock on her ass. sigh

  • formerlyAnon

I don’t mind the matchy at all (OF COURSE), but I do not love the hat. It looks retro-frumpy to me, not retro-cool.
