Carolina Herrera Spring 2013 Collection

Posted on September 11, 2012

There are rarely any surprises in a Carolina Herrera show. Like Oscar de la Renta, she is a sturdy, mountainous, immoveable figure in fashion; one who can be relied upon to consistently reinforce old school femininity and glamour and turn out beautiful collections filled with beautiful pieces. Never a wrong step with that one. But along with all the expected beautiful looks, we did find reason to be a little surprised. Her extensive use of digital prints shows a real sense of modernity, and we liked the crispness of some of these looks coming from a designer with a penchant for the flowing and dramatic. We love the jacket and jacket-dress with piping, as well as the color-blocking with prints and the spray painted stencil effect with sequins. At the end of the day – and every day – Carolina’s going to serve up beauty on a platter and it’s no different this time.

  • Just gorgeous! My favorite is the thrd row, second dress, with the red halter-like detail at the top,and with the sea-foam-green, grey/black, and yellow print.

  • Athenrein

I want every single jacket. But that’s not surprising since I have a jacket obsession. And I live in Florida. Such is life.

    • tereliz

ROFL, same here except that I live in NOLA. I love that little sweater layered over the dress in the fourth row, too.

    • mmc2315

Word.  Swooning over the piping on those smart jackets!

    • DesertDweller79

I covet so many jackets I see during Fashion Week.  But, I live in Phoenix. I do not own a single jacket.  Sigh.

  • Anathema_Device

I pretty much always love Herrera’s collections. If I had the money, I’d have lots of her designs in my closet.

I think my favorite here is the middle dress in the 5th row, the silver/gray with orange and yellow floral down the middle. That white draped halter dress is pretty killer, too (2nd row).

    • Mary Saucier

Agreed to everything  -especially row 5/middle dress. I’m dying here.

    • I like that gray with orange detailing gown too – and normally those are not my colors at all.

    • PuttyGalore

Those two are my favourites, too.

    • littlemac8

I ove the gray/orange too.  Stunning.  But I’m wondering what coloring would wear that dress to full effect?

  • I like the black dress with the white edging. It looks drawn, which makes it fun.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I’m wondering how this collection would translate onto the red carpet, especially since most of it seems RC-ready. And I bet you anything we’ll be seeing the skimpiest dresses in here around mid-December, because that’s how celebrity stylists choose their flavor of crazy these days.

  • BrooklynBomber

She has been surprising me the last couple collections. The orange-red Wilma is quintessential Hererra, but that 2nd row middle minimalist dress is stunning, and if I saw a picture of it by itself I’d never guess it’s hers.

    • TropiCarla

I totally agree with you on that minimalist dress. It made me gasp.

      • BrooklynBomber

I love it. So seemingly simple, but with so much impact.

  • M_E_S

I looooove the first dress and jacket, but something WEIRD is happening to the model in the red gown’s boob and it is bothering me to no end!

  • Some of these are simply perfect. Perfect.

  • alyce1213

I want.  So many wonderful goodies to look at today.  A pleasant distraction and nice pick-me-up on 9/11, thanks guys.

  • miagain

    oh that first dress…. sigh

  • Le_Sigh

Damn Carolina!  I think Posh will kick herself when she sees the color-blocked minimalist dresses.

  • Third row, first look…  I LOVE those sleeves.  I want!

    • PinkLemon

       tres chic

  • Nazzzy

  • CPK1

I need all of these things to be in my closet now. I have no real need for the gowns but I’ll take them too please

  • Beautiful. It would be so nice if Renee Zellweger wore one of these instead of the ultra-tight styles she usually picks. Would she dare have some of these taken in?

Question for T & Lo… the other night you saw a show and you tweeted that you were speechless (tweet-less) at the end of it and there was a standing ovation. Please save me the trouble of going back through the tweets: What was the show?

  • I hardly ever comment, but WOW! Second row, dress in the middle…Probably one of my favorite things I have seen out of any of collections yet!  Fantastic collection overall.

    • Kyle Crawford

      totally agree with you.. stunning!

  • PinkLemon

quickly becoming my favorite designer of all time. i find her collections to consistently be the most memorable.

  • kim i

third row, third dress — is that just to see if we’re paying attention?

    • someone slipped in from the set of little house on the prairie.

  • j_anson

I really love some of these – maybe my favorite among what you’ve posted so far. I love how the color-blocking details in some of the dresses are used to evoke or play off of the sense of flowing lines throughout the collection.

  • BazoDee

Oh I love it all! _We maybe not all -but I love it 90%!!
2nd row middle dress is breathtaking
I love the yellow-bright orange -black and white combo print too.

  • formerlyAnon

I think I like row 8 the best.

always like SOME thing in a Herrera collection, and usually find something overwrought or too fussy. I find it interesting that it’s the geometric prints I find “too much” here and there, usually it’s something with a bow or ruffle.

BTW: How are you guys DOING this???  (Posting at this rate, I mean) I am not at all keeping up with your posts. You’re writing them, choosing the photos and getting them up – all in the middle of FW while dashing hither and yon.

  • Judy_J

I like that there are some designers who can be counted upon to deliver the goods each and every season.  Edgy and fashion forward has its place, as does tried and true.

  • Tatiana Luján

some of the looks are so COOL. I never thought I would say that about Carolina Herrera clothes.

  • I love it all! If only I could afford to buy it all!

  • Really loving most of the coats and jackets. The pieces with the contrast piping are sharp!

  • lovelyivy

Would negotiate for my firstborn to have this in my closet.
Note: I do not have a firstborn

  • Gorgeous! Love a lot of those dresses.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

3rd dress, 2nd to last row – Wow!!  Stunning!

  • sweet_potato

I have been a fan of hers since Hector was a pup! This collection is beautiful.

    • who’s hector?

      • sweet_potato

Good question! I had to look it up to find out where the saying came from.  I found out here:

  • i love the prints with color blocking, the flashed of red here and there.  third row middle and eight row left are my personal favorites.  after looking at those depressing pr creations, it’s good to see some color and print.  and fabric that moves.

  • MilaXX

Very pretty. I hope someone wears that first gown during awards season. The only look I don’t care for is the puffy sleeved dress (3rd row, 3rd look), the rest of this collection is fabulous.

  • EEKstl

J’adore, especially everything in orange.  Lovely.

  • Ohhh… this may be my favorite show I have seen yet.

  • 3boysful

Most of these–I am specifically excluding the Space Age Little House on the Prairie, row 3, #3–are to die for.

  • EverybodysStarling

There are so many pieces, that I would kill for – escpecially the grey dress with yellow. I love the collection.

  • By far my favorite so far. Totally surprising and vibrant and youthful. I need (note the word ‘need’ there) at least half of these looks. The colors are to die for.

  • Amy Ennis

My only question is this: can I afford Carolina Herrera? Even for the romance writers convention? Hmmm.

  • Zippypie

Love the second and fifth rows.  The rest is okay. Not a fan of the dominant print.

  • PastryGoddess

Santa Carolina has done it again.  This is a FABULOUS! collection

  • unbornfawn

I guess I’m in the minority. I love the first long dress, then thud, I find most of the rest rather ugly.

    • I”m on the exact same page as you are.  Same here.

  • a_liking

sigh, it’s all so beautiful. but I covet fourth row last dress — the perfect dress for a warm spring day.

  • Amy Ellinger

Loved loved this collection, would wear every piece if I could, but I don’t think we’ll see as much as we would like on the red carpet.  Its unusual and striking, but not “pretty” enough. I hope Japan and China will showcase more pieces- they seem to be more daring in their RC choices.

I could see Jennifer Lawrence rocking several at photocalls and slightly more casual premieres.

  • OVER,OVER,OVER digital prints!

  • teensmom99

Love so much of this but why did she give the  models that awful hair?????

  • Call me Bee

    Just beautiful.

  • quiltrx

Flawless!  And I’m always a sucker for a scroll motif.  It’s all wonderful (and this coming from someone who can’t wear orange LOL), but I think the center of the last row is my very favorite.

  • DesertDweller79

Wow. This is a wonderful collection.  Beautiful.  I love the digital prints. The minimalist, color block dress is very surprising.

  • Diane_G

Probably my favorite collection from her yet. 4th row, third dress and featured dress on top are my favorites. The featured is absolutely fabulous and if I ever win the jackpot I’d snag it.

  • janetjb

The yellows are singing to me.

  • Third row on the right.  I want it, a lot.

  • TieDye64

There’s a lot to like here. Both the jacket and jacket-dress are fabulous, but I’m seriously loving the 2nd & 3rd dresses in the second row.

  • Qitkat

Really lovely and unusual ways to add print to dresses. Love her. Some fun and flirty, sassy too, all beautiful. Designers are doing great takes on color this season.

  • Judih1

LOVE. IT. and Love her for having diversity among her models. Yes, all models are tall, thin and young – but at least they come in colors.

  • Angelina Jolie! I beg you! Wear that tangerine gown, please?
