BCBGMAXAZRIA Spring 2013 Collection

Posted on September 08, 2012

Inspired by femme fatales and the black-and-white photography of Helmut Newton, the BCBGMAXAZRIA spring 2013 collection seems, to us, to have missed its mark. Instead of evoking the fluidity and sexiness of its stated inspirations, the looks are complicated to the point of being overworked. The central design element is a harness-like effect on the bodice; something that works in only about a quarter of the looks. The rest of them look uncomfortable and overdone. The mood, instead of being sexy and dangerous (as one would assume upon hearing “femme fatale” and “Helmut Newton”) was instead somewhat depressing.

They look like the dress Elena made for the Lord and Taylor challenge.

Disappointing. I wear a lot of BCBG, but this stuff won’t end up in my closet.

      • dress_up_doll

I was actually thinking how much BCBG I own and wear and how none of it resembles this collection. Well, may color story wise, but the resemblance ends there.

I agree with you. The white harnessy bits look surgical. Or like Leelu’s bandages in 5th Element.

      • HomeOfficeGirl

        Or like eletrical tape

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_L6FKGKUXWF6QSWWYAHJZYKKI3E Adrian

Except Leeloo’s thermal bandages were super green.

        • Anathema_Device

           And designed by Gaultier.

          • teensmom99

            surgical indeed.

      • http://twitter.com/MFMblog MusingsFromManhattan

I love that LeeLu reference. LOL

      • tonibaloney

I’m thinking Michelle’s back brace in “Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion.”

        • http://www.facebook.com/notadouche Jeffrey D Foldenauer

I totally thought the same thing: ‘Hey Back Brace Girl!’

      • TieDye64

Nailed it!  Leeloo’s bandage “outfit”. God bless the nerds, every one.

BCBGMAXAZRIA Spring Collection 2013, seriously?  I’m getting confused with their BCBGDGSGMXVVIIXXXMAXARIA Spring Collection 2012 Collection.
      Marketing team FAIL.

    • VicksieDo

Too busy!!  I do like the one to the far right in row 3 though.

      • AzulFashion

That was my first reaction, too.  TOO BUSY!

    • john v

i hated this collection. what happened to all the color and the fluid flowy airy breezy clothes?

    • SewingSiren

Are they wearing monitors on their ankles?

      • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

It’s fitting since they look like they escaped from the nut house.

      • TonyGo

Yes.  The shoes are from the Lindsay Lohan Collection for HSN.

    • alyce1213

      Did BCBG hire Elena Slivnyak?

    • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

What a hot mess. Again, I hate to say this, but Elena did the harness detail better. It was the element not one of 15 elements vying for attention.

    • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

There are a couple that I like, one of them doesn’t seem to have that ugly harness thingy at all, and if the other one does I can’t tell.

    • alyce1213

      Did BCBG hire Elena Slivnyak?

    • Scarlet39

This is actually quite out of the ordinary for BCGG.  I particularly like the 2nd look and the 1st look in the 2nd to last row.  Some do verge a little towards “wrapped up in masking tape”, but overall I think it’s an intersting collection.

    • Zippypie

I don’t like this collection at all.  The harness element just seems to be tacked on whatever garment they had designed and looks superfluous and gimicky.  Big thumbs down.

      • ArtSchoolDropOut

I think that it got especially gimmicky looking on the lighter colored pieces, especially when the harness is white. THEN it really looks tacked on, i.e. most of the 2nd and 3rd rows. But I actually have to say that I like it in black. Sometimes.

    • j_anson

You know, though, when it works, I REALLY like it.

    • IAmJ

Oy. Not much to gush about here. I like maybe 3-4 looks, and even those don’t blow me away.

    • unbornfawn

Reminds me of Insane from the Ukraine.

    • Judy_J

      Not my cup of tea.

    • Jacqueline Wessel

Straight jackets are too confining and giving me claustrophobia.

    • ThaliaMenninger

Depressing was the first word that came to my mind, too. Straitjackets and bandages and harnesses.

    • MilaXX

Interesting. Not for me, but I could see many a 20 something snapping this up.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

many of these look like the hardware store challenge, and the designer went overboard with the electrical tape.  and that coral and beige color combination is strictly my mother in burbank in 1960.

    • NCDFan

      Doesn’t evoke spring to me.

    • Anathema_Device

I really dislike this collection. It is just all too much. The exception is the 2nd dress from the right in the very last row of pictures. The elements come together nicely in that dress.

    • teensmom99

spot on again.  I was so excited to see BCBG because I love Max Azaria’s styling but these are awful (especially with the harness) which as noted by foodycatAlicia is surgical.  A very specific fetish.

    • Mexxoo

Brings to mind Elena’s harness baby-doll dress.  There are a lot of pretty dresses in this collection – I wonder if the harnesses can be removed?

    • LesYeuxHiboux

It’s all rather droopy and unstructured for overworked-geometric harnesses and a “femme fatale” inspiration. That phrase makes me think sharp and/or sleek, not fussy and baggy.

    • jjfg

Can’t see past the harnesses or the – spats?   The harness dealio isn’t so bad in the last row of looks, but in the rest, it does look heavy and busy.

    • travelingcat

      Bondage-lite wear for daytime? Ugh

    • hughman

I think they meant “Fig”, not “Helmut”.

    • frannyprof

This collection could be mistaken for a PR finalist’s collection. A little gimmicky.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

I keep seeing peace signs. Not a bad thing in itself, but it feels gimmicky as others have said.

Also – I tend to think of BCBG as slightly higher-price-pointed, more-fashion-forward mall clothes. (Which is also not a bad thing – I get a lot of work clothes there, always on sale.) So who’s supposed to be the customer for this line?

    • MissAnnieRN

Overworked indeed.  I feel tired looking at this.  And the harness thing looks uber-cheap.

    • butterflysunita

Ugh.  When I saw the first dress I got confused for a second about what post I’d clicked on and thought I was looking at a Project Runway bottom 3 look.

    • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

I like the last two rows (in black) very very much!  But the rest doesn’t do much for me.

    • Kate4queen

Um, no, no thank you. :)

    • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

It pulls the eyes in a million direction in a really bad way.

    • TomBord

Shall we downgrade their co stock now and get it over with ?

(wuz up w/ those hiddy ankle gauntlets?)

    • http://chocochanel.wordpress.com/ chocochanel

seems more ‘staightjacket’ and less ‘ bondage’ than I would expect hearing ‘femme fatale’ thrown around as inspiration.

    • Trisha26

When I saw the video of this collection all I could think of was last season’s PR contestant Olivier Green – he had a couple “pieces” that were just scraps of fabric that fit over the actual garment, like these harnesses. And that term still reminds me of Falling Skies!

    • guest2visits

Whoa; It’s like Dimitry’s and Elena’s RW collections cross pollinated.
Her repetitive torso-patterns, his sharp blacks and geometric angles.
Everything here would look so much better without that harness.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QFW22QV426LUOEPGASPZJWJMDE MishaFoomin

      White: insane asylum ankle restraints.
      Black: bondage restraints.
I like the first pic on top, ankles aside. That’s it.

    • quiltrx

Some of these looks are okay, but REALLY nothing like the stated inspirations AT ALL.

And on some, the harness thing really feels like an afterthought, covering up what’s underneath for the sake of “cohesion”, which it really isn’t–just repetition.

    • AuntieAnonny

It’s too cluttered, and too.. 50 Shades of Gray, which is obviously what inspired this collection.

Second dress, last row is great, though.

    • ccm800

Do we NOT Think the pieces are meant to be worn without the harnesses and these are just runway accessories?

    • Beardslee

As usual these days, I am distracted by the charmlessness of the models.  And they need a hairbrush.  I like the silhouette of these clothes but there is too much of a muchness about the torso.

    • PastryGoddess

I wear BCBG quite a bit and it’ll be interesting to see how these pieces translate to retail.  Those harnesses will go for sure, but the color pallette is um…limited and the shapes are also….limited.

Once you take those harnesses off, there’s not much to the dresses

    • andreawey

apparently they’ve all hurt their ankles……

    • libraangel

Kinda like the next step for PR’s Elena!

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

      I’m underwhelmed.
