Amy Adams in Marchesa

Posted on September 11, 2012

Amy sure likes the mid-calf-length dresses, severe hair, and pointy shoes, doesn’t she?

Amy Adams attends the premiere of ‘The Master’ during the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival in Marchesa.

But unlike her last walk down this path, this time it’s all coming together and working for her. Not every gal could pull off that hairstyle, but she’s rocking it. The view from the side is gorgeous. The dress does come off as mature, we admit. But it’s striking as hell on her. And while the pointy-toed pumps wouldn’t have been our choice (ditto those earrings), we think they work with the dress.

We’re not sure why she’s so intent on looking older and more serious than she comes across on film, but at least she looks pretty here.

Amy here is showing us the latest in Martha Stewart gift wrapping, just in time for the holidays.  Black is the new red!

  • alyce1213

Did she get tangled up in some black gaffer tape?  Good gawd, I hate Marchesa.
I think she dresses older for credibility.  She’s got that little girl voice and has established herself as an ingenue and girl-next-door, but wants to be taken more seriously.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

The close up of that dress is scary!  But SHE looks really great.

    • BrooklynBomber

I invite you to become a charter member of the DIE, MARCHESA, DIE! Society. There are no dues or other obligations, and since all you have to do is hate Marchesa, you pre-qualify.

      • alyce1213

        I accept.  I am honored.

        • BrooklynBomber

For the upcoming meet-n-greet pot luck we’ll be wearing Calvin Klein, Jil Sander, Helmut Lang, etc.

          • lovelyivy

… just as long as there’s no requirement to wear things (allegedly) designed by Stella McCartney or something.

          • BrooklynBomber

You may wear whatever you like as long as it’s not you-know-what!!

      • MoHub

         Put me on the roster!

        • BrooklynBomber

          You’re in!

      • Call me Bee

Excellent!  May I join you?  When do I get my Membership Card?  ;)

        • BrooklynBomber

          On its way!

        • DCSheehan

At last, a club I want to join! Is there wine?

          • http://twitter.com/thesquizz Lauren

I’m not coming if there’s no wine.

          • BrooklynBomber

            Not to worry!

          • BrooklynBomber

            It goes without saying.

          • DCSheehan

This is the best club ever!!!

      • quiltrx

Quiltrx has a sad!  This Marchesa is evil, I admit…but I actually LIKE some Marchesa! (ducks)

So I’m sad I can’t be in the club. When you start the OVERTHROW STELLA MCCARTNEY club, though, I’m totally in.

        • Introspective

The overthrow stella collective already exists. It comes automatically with your membership as a BK on this site.

        • BrooklynBomber

Ah, yes, Marchesa’s mind control program. Every so often they send out a likable piece and people start to soften–it’s all part of the plan.  Don’t worry: the DMDS has an intervention and reorientation program. We can help.

  • Sobaika

    That bow situation is insane.

    • charlotte

I bet the lady in the third pic is thinking the same thing.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

She looks pretty. And I like the hair.

  • LaylaSV

I feel like she is dressed up for Halloween as Penelope Cruz.

  • PastryGoddess

Well aside from that froufrah on the front of her dress Amy looks pretty good here.  I actually appreciate the ladylike pumps instead of the usual hooves that ladystars like to strap on.

    • AnneElliot

I agree, I’m praying this is a trend — a return to delicate, pretty shoes instead of all those horrible shoes borrowed from the Bride of Frankenstein.

  • sk8tfan

Marchesa stole Ven’s origami rose chest plate!

  • Sobaika

“We’re not sure why she’s so intent on looking older and more serious than she comes across on film”

I’m pretty sure she’s in her late 30s and on screen she reads a good decade younger. Maybe her red carpet looks are intentional? Although everyone else in Hollywood wants to appear as young as possible…

    • kimmeister

      Yes, she is 38.

      • mhleta

Knock me over with a feather, I thought she was about 26.

        • Cautiously Pessimistic

Yeah, she played a farmer’s daughter with a master’s degree on The West Wing back in 2002.  She really doesn’t look like it’s been ten years.

          • charlotte

             Wholesome, but not too wholesome!

          • theblondette

…Omg I hadn’t realised that was her! But now I think of the episode, yes! Ah, classic West Wing.

          • SassieCassy

            Also tara’s cousin on buffy!

        • Mary229

She looks super young.  I think she is just a woman that dresses for the part she is promoting.  The Master is a super serious film and probably her 4th shot at another Oscar.   My guess is that when she’s out promoting Superman next summer (Lois Lane) she’ll be dressed as some kind of sexy professional.

  • http://twitter.com/GuidosDaddy Jason M. Galloway

Love the dress.  And her homage to Annie Hall via her hair is both inspiring  and a little weird.

  • Jangle57

I understand why she went with the hairstyle she did (didn’t want to compete with the ribbons/bows)  and from the side it looks very pretty but from the front, again, looks severe.  Hate hate hate the shoes!

  • BrooklynBomber

Terrible. ’50s matron going to fancy funeral.

    • TieDye64

Oh dear God yes. You nailed it, haaahaaaa!

  • Nazzzy

That dress is just ridiculous. Everything else looks good.

  • LuisaNL

I really like this look but the hair, together with the dress and the shoes makes it a little too mature. and why the hell would you want to look older? you can be taken seriously and still have fun with your style. Amy should take some notes from Cate Blanchett.

    • halleygee

Agree, that hair, those earrings and shoes… nevermind the crazy bows. All very aging. Can’t get behind this look at all.

  • kimmeister

I like the way the hair looks from the side, but due to the placement of the part, from the front it just looks Little House on the Prairie.  I actually prefer her severe hair from the other day over this.

    • mountainFashionista

I immediately thought “Etta Place!” (from Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid)

  • Kyle Crawford

What pageant is it that she won…. ?
That is a sash across her isnt it….?

  • msdamselfly

    She wears that dress beautifully

  • SewingSiren

    Excellent!

  • Anathema_Device

I’m not loving this. The proportions on that ribbon/frou-frou detail seem off to me. Too heavy up top. The shape of the dress itself is nice on her. I’d like her hair better if she had side parted it.

  • tallgirl1204

I don’t know that she’s going for older– but definitely more serious.  I think she wants to be thought of as versatile, not just sweetheart-y.

    • tallgirl1204

And the dress owes a lot to Anthony Williams of PR fame.  All that folded ribbon.

  • jw_ny

I really don’t like anything at all about this look.  It’s just all off!  Those earrings especially…ugh.  Definitely time for her to find a new stylist…one that can make her look current, modern, and youthful.  She’s lovely and has so much potential.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

I’m never a big fan of bows, ribbons and other packaging objects on dresses, but Amy looks fantastic here.  I suspect that she knows that her ingenue days are coming to an end and she is working hard to present herself as a serious actress.

  • Judy_S

I love this. I love her, anyway, but I feel like she’s channeling a 50s Avedon photo. Not easy for someone short and blonde.

  • mhleta

The ribbon is awful from close up! It looks like she’s being attacked by some sort of extra-terrestrial sea worm and if I saw her in person I’d have the urge to tear it off and stomp on it before it ate her face. She looks beautiful otherwise. I’d much rather see a fantastic brooch on her shoulder than that craft project mess.

  • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

If that dress didn’t have all that frou frou shit going on, it would be a decent LBD. A bit dull, but could have been livened up with better jewelry and shoes. I hate the center part on pulled back hair and those shoes just look painful. So, basically, I like Amy Adams but I hate this get up.

  • Tatiana Luján

I generally like pointy shoes, but the ones with a short point, not the ones that are several cm longer than your feet.
Her shoe points are a bit too long for my taste.
The “decoration” of that dress is awful.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Another one going for the Serious Actress look. It’s not bad, but the Marchesa vomit all over the dress is not very flattering.

  • EEKstl

I agree, it’s all working here, and I love the length on her and even the pointy shoes.  Hair back and unfussy is the right way to go here, but I think a ponytail would have worked even better as a chic counterpoint to the severity of the dress and shoes.

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

i like ‘severe amy’, but this is not good.
its like they took a victoria beckham dress, stapled some wrinkled wrapping paper to the front, and voila: its a marchesa!
at least fit, accessories and styling are ok.

  • lrhoff

    Very striking….she looks nice.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Are we sure this Amy Adams?  It looks more like Wednesday Adams going to her junior prom.

    • mountainFashionista

       Amy Addams — Wednesday’s long-lost cousin…

  • melanie0866

Really?  That thing across the front is too Miss America for me.

  • Beardslee

That hairdo does no more for her than it did for the Victorians.  Still, a lovely woman.

  • http://twitter.com/aStudiobytheSea a Studio by the Sea

It made me think of gift wrapped vampires.  I don’t know why she dresses this way, but she’s always been long in the tooth for the princess ingenue parts. I think she was 30 when she did Enchanted, so pushing against being typecast as a 17 year old can’t be easy.

    • Clueless_Jock

      “Gift wrapped vampires.”

      Nailed it. LOL.

  • Call me Bee

That’s a lot of ribbon. But then…it’s Marchesa.  Despite that, Amy herself looks great.

  • S_Swift

Giant bow spiders! Perfect for a Halloween-themed tea party.

  • AnneElliot

Love her, hate the bow, and the hair is positively Victorian.

  • miscorrections

She’s the fanciest casket model in the show room.

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

she does look lovely, the hair and makeup are impeccable, but i am oh-so-bored with black.

  • janetjb

She strikes me as someone who wants to look one way but looks better dressing another; she likes severe but is better served by soft.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=21011106 Sumari M.

I’ll tell you why she’s looking more severe: Lois Lane. She’s got a whole career of bubbly sweet ingenueness to get past to prove herself as DC’s flinty but winsome girl reporter. Winsome she’s got, flinty she’s working on.

    • Mary229

Oh, see I disagree.  I think this woman dresses for the part she is promoting.  She’s dressed severe here because her character in The Master is a severe, manipulative Lady MacBeth.  My guess is when she’s promoting superman next summer she’ll be dressed as some kind of sexy professional.  I love Lois Lane and after seeing this woman in The Fighter was I thrilled to see her cast.   Lois is tough and strong but also warm and loving.  Amy is perfect for it.

  • MilaXX

I don’t mind the dress and shoes even though it is a little mature for her, but despite the lovely profile I cannot cosign that Martha Washington hairdo. I wonder if this is her attempt at looking more serious actress or something.

  • Lilak

Amy looks purty, but the dress?  Sorry, but the decoration is just lazy (sadly, almost a hallmark of Marchesa, in my view).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=560001958 Rob Maitner

I love my Ms. Adams, but she is bringing the Mary Todd Lincoln realness with that ‘do.

  • CQAussie

I gotta disagree, loves.  That hair is not doing her any favours, I feel like she just looks frumpy with it and sorta matronly.  Love the dress though!

  • Scarlet39

I just don’t like this dress.   It’s a simple LBD with some frippery tacked on.   It’s not even particularly pretty frippery.   It just seems (to me) that it’s a lazy design.

  • Kristin McNamara

In that last photo, she looks like a pre-surgery Nicole Kidman.

  • judybrowni

At 38, she’s obvious tired of being cast as a ditzy girl.

  • guest2visits

The length of the dress, and the pointy shoes are all working nicely for her, but I think the design of the neckline, and all the
fru-fru attached, are making this dress old looking. The dated hair style and the earrings aren’t helping.

  • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

I dunno, it looks kinda like she got tangled up in some wide electrical tape. The severe hair isn’t doing her any favors, either.

  • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

Just a big NOPE!  That built in beauty pageant sash is awful, and the hair is way too severe.  Then again, I can’t stand her, so I love seeing her look bad.

  • quiltrx

This is pretty much what I look like when I try to use a tape gun.

  • l_c_ann

    Kamikaze ribbon attack, aisle 3.

(Inspired by the country and western hats that appeared to have been divebombed by kamikaze pigeons.)

  • Judy Raddue

The pageant ribbon detail in the front is ridiculous but, damn, it’s almost upstaged by her rockin’ bod.  Imagine this dress without the frou-frou front, and in the same green as Rachel McAdam’s gown – it would be perfection for her.  If that particular green is it in 2013, Adams needs to start wearing it now.

  • m0r0

That hair needs to go back to the 18th Century where it belongs.

  • Mary229

Amy seems to be one of those people that dresses for the project she is currently promoting.  When she was promoting “Enchanted” she showed up dressed like a Modern day Princess.   When she was promoting “The fighter” she showed up in low cut stuff that sort of echoed the more trashy woman she was playing.   Promoting the “Muppets” she showed up in that red and white dress that had a more cartoon bombshell look to it.   For “The Master” she seems to be dressed like a modern version of her character.

  • Kristy Evans

I HATE middle parts. They look good on practically no one, save for Marcia Brady. Blech. Everything else is nice, although the pointy shoes are severe.

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

    Jane Eyre wears Prada.

  • bitterk

A tad bit too much happening on this dress but the fit is great.  The hair is tragic.

  • PeaceBang

If she had worn some decent earrings it could have redeemed the terrible hair, but the earrings are just un dommage.

  • http://www.facebook.com/renate.yerkes Renate Yerkes

You can’t knock this mija! If this had been Kate Middleton, no one would question that it looks very sophisticated but hot! perhaps mija is royalty and never told us.
