2012 Emmy Awards Red Carpet – Part 3

Posted on September 24, 2012

Homestretch, bitches. You can DO this!

Amanda Peet in Calvin Klein

After seeing… we think it was Kat Dennings in one, we briefly considered tweeting that jeweled headbands were going to be a trend on the Emmys RC after we got a load of Miss Peet. But it appears our instincts to not jump the gun proved correct, because it really wasnt that big a thing in the end.

Having said that, we like it on her. The dress is pretty, but (to recycle a line) it’s the color of old bras.

Archie Panjabi in Randi Rahm

Gorgeous color.

Ariel Winter in Katharine Kidd

That is way too much dress and shoe for such a tiny little girl.

Ashley Judd in Carolina Herrera

The dress is beautiful (although we don’t like the neck bow), but WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH YOUR HAIR, ASHLEY JUDD? That’s some “Mars Attacks” hair right there.

Christina Hendricks in custom Christian Siriano

We think it works pretty well. It’s really hard for her to do bombshell looks without looking like she’s going overboard, which must be annoying, since she’s the epitome of a bombshell. This dress puts the goods on display without being too in-your-face and without looking like she’s wearing a sausage casing. We like the belt; it does a very good job of defining her waist. We just wish it provided a little contrast, like maybe a bejeweled buckle or something. We don’t love the color, but it does suit her.

Elle DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi (in Valentino)

Is it us, or are they both slowly becoming unrecognizable?

Ellen looks good, although the scarf is too much and we never liked her penchant for wearing her sleeves too long. Portia, we’re sorry to say, looks batshit crazy.

Emily VanCamp in J. Mendel Resort 2013

What a HUGE disappointment. This was your year, girl. Your show became a runaway hit and you are poised to be the It Girl going forward. Why on earth would you choose a dress the color of a lint trap? It’s pretty otherwise, but it’d be slammin’ in a royal blue or red.

Hannah Simone in custom Emilio Pucci

Yellow was definitely the color of the night. You won’t hear us complain. Standard dress otherwise, though.

Heidi Klum in Alexandre Vauthier Spring 2012 Couture

It’s a beautiful dress, but literally every single accessory matched it exactly. Come on now, Barbie.

Jane Levy in Pamella Roland

Fabulous color.

Jessica Lange in J. Mendel

We love you, you crazy-fierce old broad.

Julia Ormond in Lorena Sarbu

Elegant. We’re surprised by how much we like the hair.

Kelly Osbourne in Zac Posen Resort 2013

It’s beautiful, but we’re way past over the whole matching-the-hair-to-the-dress thing.

Kristen Wiig in Balenciaga

Utterly hopeless. She insists on wearing non-colors that do nothing for her. It’s like she’s afraid of looking attractive. Or she had a terrible childhood experience with crayons.

Lena Dunham in custom Prada

This looks better in pictures than it did on camera. But it’s still way too much dress for her. Love her hair, though.

Lily Rabe in Tadashi Shoji Fall 2012

Killer dress.

Mayim Bialik in custom Pamella Roland

We joked at the time that this would be a great dress for Judi Dench (which prompted a shit-ton of angry Mayim Bialik fan responses), but it’s good, for the most part. We think you can do covered up without going matronly, though.

Melissa McCarthy in Daniela Kurrle

Shape-wise, it’s not bad – although it eludes as to why she always adds volume to her arms. The fabric is awful, though. Heavy and funereal.

Melissa Rauch in Oliver Tolentino

Another fabulous color. This was probably the most colorful red carpet we’ve seen in some time.

Sofia Vergara in Zuhair Murad Resort 2012

Of course.

Zooey Deschanel in custom Reem Acra

This dress seems to have inspired a lot of negativity, but we thought it was pretty. She looks like Hipster Snow White, which is a look that suits her very well.

Heidi’s dress is a great color for her but the slit is too high

      • snarkmeister

I’m absolutely in love with Heidi’s hair though.  Bringing back the Farrah flip, bitches!

        • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Agreed – Heidi’s hair and makeup are beautiful. And is it just me, or could she have really used a bra?

          • TheDivineMissAnn

It’s not just you – she really needed to corral those girls.

        • LesYeuxHiboux

My third grade teacher wore her hair like that every day, and I found it utterly mesmerizing. I spent many a moment, that ought to have been devoted to reading Charlotte’s Web, just staring at her ‘do and trying to figure out how she made it do that. Miss Malloy, you gorgeous creature.

      • MoHub

Heidi is wearing a nightgown. That is all.

        • Billie_Dawn

I think Amanda Peet’s dress is much more a fancy nightgown than Heidi’s.

      • VRuss

Maybe she was going for all the hoopla Angelina’s leg got at the Oscars.

    • Sobaika

      Julia Ormond looks virtually unrecognizable.

I think Mayim looks rather pretty.

      • SassieCassy

SERIOUSLY. i guess thats the thing about period pieces, everyone looks way different off set.

      • Billie_Dawn

I’m so glad that Julia Ormond finally did something different with her hair and got rid of those horrible pseudo-ringlets she’d had for a while.

I really like Mayim’s dress too. I think the eye-catching color is what saves it from being matronly.

      • Violina23

I think Mayim’s misstep is the loose, sheer arms. They feel like too much of an obvious addon/attempt to cover her up. I think the color is magnificent, and her hair/makeup looks great.

She wrote in her blog that the necklace is customized and consists partially of a mezuzzah, which I think it’s a pretty clever way to include her Jewishness without being in-your-face about it.

        • http://twitter.com/Alloyjane Alloy Jane

What’s funny about Mayim’s dress is that covered up though it was, she apparently got a lot of crap for her neckline.  Crazy. I love the dress though, it’s very goddess-y and I think Judi Dench would look amazing in it.

I really love Ashley Judd’s space-hair.  I wish Christina’s dress was in a color.  And Zooey looks pretty angry in that picture.  Can I have that blue dress please?  I don’t care if Cubs blue is not my color.  I love it.

      • kimmeister

Julia looks 1,000x better than she did in the previous 2 posts she was in.

Mayim’s hair and makeup look soft and pretty.

      • Kristin McNamara

I think ASHLEY JUDD looks unrecognizable! Holy botox, Batman.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

TLo nailed the hair with the “Mars Attacks” description. And if this woman is already hitting the Botox needle, I don’t want to think what she’s going to look like in ten years.

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/M4YADXDINKGKWLQ3GMI3X2NXBU Kari Dalziel

She looks like Rob Schneider’s fraternal twin!

    • LadyCelia

The ‘lint trap’ dress is actually quite lovely–just not for a blonde.

      • Spicytomato1

I love that shade of gray. I even think a blonde can pull it off with stronger makeup. If Emily’d had smokier eyes and a darker lip I would have loved the look.

        • KELLEYKAT

I think I read somewhere it was described as dusty jade.  I was like….no, no jade here.  Lint trap is the perfect description.  Other than a bleah color she looked beautiful.

    • Snarky_Amber

Hated the (non)color of Christina’s dress, but otherwise she is still doing so much better than she used to – or Christian is getting better at designing for her. If VanCamp’s dress was in Levy’s color, it would be among the best if not THE best look of the night.

      • Sobaika

YES. A strong blue. I was thinking of lavender/purple but that would make it way too reminiscent of Mila Kunis’ Oscar Elie Saab.

        • Snarky_Amber

oh god, SUCH a good dress, right?

          • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

You both make a really, really good point. She needed a color somewhere in the jewel tones, or something more saturated.

          • Sobaika

Easily one of the most memorable red carpet moments in the past few years, it was divine.

      • KELLEYKAT

I love Christina’s Siriano dress, but the non color was sososo boring.  She looks so amazing in purple, can you imagine if…ahhh!  And I am so glad she kept the baby heads on the down low!  haha!

        • Kristin McNamara

Kept the babyheads on the downlow AND managed to make me exclaim, “Holy crap! I never knew her waist was so tiny!” That’s a successful dressing of oneself, right there.

      • Girl_With_a_Pearl

I thought Christina looked very glamourous.  So sorry she didn’t win.  Actually, I’m annoyed that Mad Men didn’t get any  awards this year.

    • MaryMitch

Lena Dunham looked so uncomfortable, which is strange because every time I’ve seen her in an interview she seemed very outgoing and funny.

Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch looked great! I was so glad to see Mayim looking so pretty, and I wouldn’t have recognized Melissa. Big Bang really nerds them up!

Melissa McCarthy looks a lot better than what she wore last awards season, but still… she needs a new stylist and a designer who understands how to dress larger women.

I thought Zooey Deschanel’s dress was beautiful.

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

The thing is, I think Melissa McCarthy’s designer is someone who is supposed to be “experienced” in designing plus-sized women. I think this is the person that MM works with regularly.

Whatever the case is, Melissa might want to consider looking into other designers, b/c this one is clearly not working. Maybe Tadashi Shiji? Largely because they did such a stellar job working with Octavia Spencer last year.

    • BrooklynBomber

      old bras… lint trap… hilarious.

    • everest19

Huge Portia fan, but her smile scares me here, as does her “outfit”. Reminds me of a molting snake for some reason.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Poor Portia looks very unhealthy to me.  :(

        • NC_Meg

I was thinking the same thing. She usually looks gorgeous but she looks “off” here.

          • bitchybitchybitchy

She could be lovely, but this is such an odd, off outfit.

            • NC_Meg

The outfit definitely doesn’t help but the face and hair are what threw me off. Her face looks like she lost a ton of weight but her body doesn’t. The hair looks like she just got out of the shower. No bueno.

        • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

          Unhealthy, maybe.  Completely unrecognizable, certainly.

    • Eva_baby

Lena Dunham looks like she is playing dress-up in her Mee-maw’s dress.  That is a very unfortunate look fo her.

Christina Hendrick’s dress is such a drab color.  It doesn’t work at all for me.

Lily Rabe FTW! with this group.

    • GorgeousThings

I didn’t hate Kristen Wiig’s dress all that much, but her haircolor is unflattering, and the two combined to make her look depressed.

      • gabbilevy

I love her as a brunette, but she doesn’t seem to know how to do makeup or pick colors for it. Too bad.

      • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

Is it for a role? Because it looks like she picked up a box of Miss Clairol. And I hope those heels aren’t… suede.

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Marie Claire had her on the cover with her brunette hair and I thought she looked gorgeous!  But of course, they managed to get a brush through it.  What happened here?!

      • KELLEYKAT

I was thinking she and Stephen Moyer use the same box color!!!  Harsh!!

      • NC_Meg

I didn’t even recognize her with that hair!

      • kimmeister

Plus, the suede pumps are an odd choice to pair with that dress.

    • AR16

Jessica Lange was my favorite of the night.  She’s got that old Valley of the Dolls glamour look.  Love her.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

She could certainly give some of the younger women a few lessons in choosing the right gown and working it on the RC, couldn’t she?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_KAFYDPCVNCKHWI57YPQRXEJADE Maria

Lena looks like she is standing behind one of those painted fences where you stick your face over top and its your head on another body.

Oh, and where are Ven and Kenley?

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

        Check the White Board.  :)

      • Sara LaBatt

I just kept scrolling down on Lena and it’s like her waist is in her armpits, and/or she’s wearing 12″ heels.  How is her bottom “half” sooooo loooooong?

    • gabbilevy

      HIPSTER SNOW WHITE. NAILED IT.

Lily Rabe and Melissa Rauche are my favorites in this pile. And Sofia Vargara is looking more and more like a cartoon (seriously. her cheekbones. are unreal.)

      • bitchybitchybitchy

My husband looked at Sofia Vergara and immediately said “Charo”

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/OHRGWHCFMKTE6SHS7GJRZ674B4 E

Geez, Kelley Osbourne is *teeny*. When did that happen??

Also, I have a dress that had the too-much-fabric problem in the skirt that Lena Dunham’s dress seems to be suffering from. It would be great if there were 30% less skirt there.

Also-also, Sofia Vergara’s mermaid “of course” had a little malfunction in the seam on her backside. She tweeted a picture. Of course.

    • Zaftiguana

In defense of Sofia Vergara’s “Of course” look vs., say, Lea Michelle’s, hey. At least her “Of course” is to look like a Vegas drag queen in a Bette Midler stage costume. I’ll take that over the trying-too-hard starlet look any day.

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

You do make a good point. Lea Michele takes herself way too seriously, whereas it seems as though Sofia Vergara often seems to be mocking or making fun of herself. Also, SV seems to have a better understanding of what “persona” works for her. BIG difference in the annoyance factor.

      • Violina23

        THIS! :-)

      • Hell Yes, I Would!

I think I saw somewhere that Sofia’s dress split – and of course, she tweeted a picture of her ass. Killer bod, but clearly the dress was too tight.

    • eowyn_of_rohan

Sofia took the term ‘mermaid gown’ too literally.

    • imspinningaround

I immediately recognized that the necklace Jane Levy is wearing was the necklace Michelle Williams wore to the Oscars the year of Brokeback Mountain.

That knowledge occupies the place in my brain where calculus or the capitals of the nations of South America should be.

      • Violina23

LOL, I always wonder what pieces of useful knowledge I’m displacing when I remember something random like that

        • http://twitter.com/ms_smartiepants Beth Mellone

I always know exactly what useful knowledge I have displaced. “Where the fuck are my keys!”

    • greyhoundgirl

Emily Van Camp’s dress looked light blue last night–surprised to see how grey it looks here.  Sofia Vergara looked less vulgar on television and I wanted Archie to win because she is fabulous and we never see or hear her enough.

    • SewingSiren

Sofia Vergara is literally a mermaid.  I love it. And I also love the Zooey look. Heidi is divorce Barbie. And Kelly Osborne is Barbie at the Goodwill, after she’s been marked on with the Sharpie.

    • Call me Bee

I loved Christina’s dress, but just wish it were a deeper tone–like a mocha or cafe au lait.
Heidi=trashy, though I loved her hair last night.
A note to Lena & Mayim:  lose the sleeves.
Ashley Judd tweeted last night that her hair was so big, she had to sit on the floor of her limo!  It’s just cray-cray!
Loved Zooey’s dress, and it was funny that she couldn’t keep her hands off the skirt–she kept playing with it!
As for Kelly and her purple hair–I love it.  It looked beautiful with her gown and even her lips.  Her big smile all evening really helped.

      • Jillian3538

Mayin is an Orthodox Jew, requiring that she dress modestly.  Ergo the sleeves.

        • Call me Bee

          Ah–got it!

        • Violina23

She could have gone with tighter, non-sheer sleeves though…. but I thought it was mostly a great (modest) look. Stunning color on her

    • Araina23

      Lily Rabe’s dress is amazing.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Jane Levy’s was probably one of my favorite looks of the night just because of the vibrancy of the color. A very pretty dress, and I can never say no to a shiny patent leather belt.

      Lily Rabe’s dress is fierce.

I like the color of Archie Panjabi’s dress, but it’s venturing into bridesmaid/mother of the bride territory, stylewise.

I actually really like what Mayim Bialik is wearing. I think it’s beautiful!

Melissa Rauch was also in a gorgeous color.

      Sofia Vergara – PLEASE STOP.

I feel rather ambivalent about Zooey D’s dress, but would it have killed her to crack a smile?

      • Wendi126

Zooey is pissed cause her black tights can’t be seen

        • rh33

I was wondering if there were black tights under that sea to netting…

      • Sara LaBatt

I thought having Zooey right after Sofia was hilarious.  Because Sofia poses like that and looks amazing (mermaid dress and all) and Zooey tries the same pose and looks like a paper doll cutout with a pouty face.  Made me laugh!

    • ojosazules

Lena Dunham’s dress is awful, awful, really awful. I hate it.
What a relief to see Julia Ormond looking lovely.
      Jane Levy is simply spectacular.
That color is great on Heidi, but I wish she had more support.

    • Trisha26

The bodice/strap situation looks way too large on Ashley’s dress, pretty color though. I thought Christina’s look was unflattering; very disappointing – and that it was a Christian Siriano is sad, love him. Kristen Wiig often looks like she just didn’t try, like here. I’m surprised, TLo, that you’re okay with the uterus-high slits and deep vee on Heidi’s gown! She did look very pretty, however. Also not a fan of the painful-looking curved bodice covers, like on Zoey’s gown.

    • http://www.katidom.com/ Kati B

I’m pretty sure that Lena Dunham’s strategy was to say to her stylist, “Get me a dress that I don’t have to wear foundation garments under.” I’m quite sure she’s not heavy but that dress is practically wearing her and she looked heavy in it.

    • BrooklynBomber

You know how sometimes you put on an outfit and look in the mirror and think, wow! I look great! And so you go out, all shiny and confident. And then later you see a picture of yourself in said outfit and can’t believe how completely wrong you were?  = Porti De Rossi.

    • Anathema_Device

Dunham looks like she forgot to take the hanger out of her dress when she put it on. Seriously, it looks like she’s sticking her head though one of those carnival painting things.

    • newleaf1

Hipster Snow White is so dead on!  I love it.  And I think she looks great.  She is a little like Helena Bonham Carter – you judge her on her own terms, not anyone else’s.

    • dickylarue

All these bitches need to bow down to Jessica Lange’s sunglasses. Lena Dunham needs to return the drapes to medieval times. In the battle of bosoms, Christina Hendrick’s roundly (he he)  defeats Kat Dennings by proving we like our boobs with scotch, not a side of fries. Ellen & Portia need a 70′s Variety show with a photo-realistic dragon who sounds like Paul Lynne. Without a doubt, Zooey Deschanel later ended up drunk splashing around a fountain in that dress screaming for opaque tights. Heidi’s this close to walking the red carpet nude in a valkyrie helmet.

    • Spicytomato1

Ellen still looks like Ellen, but Portia looks like…I don’t know, a Portia imposter? And a bad one at that? Yikes.

Back to Ellen, I get that she prefers menswear, and it works for her. But those shoes! They’re not menswear-inspired. They look like actual men’s shoes. Too much.

Melissa Rauch’s dress intrigues me. It looks like maybe it’s not solid green but has a turquoise panel in the skirt? Or is that a trick of the light? Pretty.

    • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

Okay, how did Kalinda get there in that gorgeous swath of blue satin and not be wrinkled? All of them look suspiciously wrinkle-free. Were there steamers on the red carpet?

(later) Now I’m back to hating yellow.

    • http://www.facebook.com/katiewolf2002 Katie Wolf

Faves: “Hipster Snow White” (+1); Christina Hendricks, head to toe, gorgeous! Regarding Hendricks, as mentioned, it’s hard to thread that needle of dressing up her assets without looking like Jessica Rabbit and I think the color choice allowed her to do just that, perfectly.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

When you take into account that Christina Hendricks has that hourglass figure and that gorgeous, vivid hair, the non-color works, giving her glamour without going over the top.

    • PinkLemon

I’m just loving that Sofia’s dress allegedly ripped along the ass crack. NOICE.

      • l_c_ann

There are dresses that threaten to launch sequin rockets, if the starlet so much as sneezes.  Ass crack rips however are functions of poorly sewn/designed + too tight.

    • halleygee

Yikes, what a hugely disappointing parade on the red carpet. The best thing is Heidi’s hair, but her dress reminds me of that place Wonder Woman comes from where all the women dress like… that. And I’m sorry, but Mayim Bialik does not look good in that dress.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=664429801 Kate Clausen

There was an article in the New York Times about her yesterday.  Mayim considers herself a modern orthodox Jew and thus follows modesty guidelines.  Hence, the somewhat matronly dress.  I think the color is fantastic, though.

        • halleygee

I am Jewish and am familiar with this but I still don’t like that dress!

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=664429801 Kate Clausen

I had no idea that Mayim was Orthodox until I read the article yesterday.  I almost like what she has on but not quite.  I wonder if the dress could have been a bit more fitted up top, with more fitted sleeves, and still be modest enogh.

            • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_P65MJNFYI2WPX6FFRMFHNJEUTU JohannaS

Modesty may be what she tells people, but it’s really because she doesn’t shave her armpits or legs. Apparently she’s quite hirsute.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Lena Dunham looks like her mother forced her into that dress and she’s going to make that face ALL NIGHT in her parents’ Soirée for Mitt Romney because of it.

Ellen’s penchant for raccoon eyes is frankly terrifying.

Zooey Deschanel needs to go away.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VZLU6YVO4BRTELTTH3GRAAMWZQ Dot

I’m surprised at how much I like the way that mousey colored dress looks on Christina Hendricks. It actually does suit her very well and she looks lovely. Lena Dunham needs to invest in a mirror — that dress just does nothing for her.

    • Stubenville

Ashley Judd = Pickles Oblong hair.

    • xmixiex

      why so serious, zooey?

      • Stubenville

She looks like she’s about to stamp her foot and shout “I’ve HAD it.”

        • bitchybitchybitchy

It’s as if she was going to scream “Don’t give me that manicpixiedreamgirl shit anymore, do you hear me?????”

    • megohd

Portia de Rossi, WHAT THE FUCK. I have never liked her as an actress, as watching someone in the throes of an eating disorder is unpleasant for me. But now her faced is fucked up too. Good God. I wish I had anything articulate to say beyond just being grossed out and concerned.

    • Stubenville

Is that a whiff of cougar desperation emanating from Heidi? C’mon girl; you don’t have to be so damn obvious.

      • l_c_ann

I think she’s trying to destroy bra sales, single ….er….handedly.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

Heidi is working that single gal back on the hunt vibe a bit too obviously. Yes, she still has that killer body, gorgeous face, she simply doesn’t need to go all plunging neckline and slit up to the good china every time she’s on the RC.

    • KateShouldBeWorking

Just to make sure I’m clear on this: 1/2 inch separates an elegant bouffant from a Mars Attacks one?

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

         Sure. Why not.

      • formerlyAnon

You also have to factor in the proportions of forehead and eyebrows.

      • Sara LaBatt

I thought the same thing and then I looked at both again and decided that yes, yes it does!

    • BrooklynBomber

I don’t like Christina Hendricks’ dress at all. But I pretty much never like cartoon character / burlesque / Jessica Rabbit /Vargas girl drag. I just don’t get it. I don’t get Dita Von Teese — there, I said it!  And here I go running with scissors, and saying more: I don’t think that look suits Christina one bit. Yes, she has that body, but I feel like the whole play-up-the-voluptuousness thing is imposed on her. I never feel like it’s her personality at all. Arrgghhh!!!

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

The voluptuous thing *might* be imposed on her, but if that’s the case, there are still ways to dress beautifully and age/size/occasion -appropriately that play down the boobs and that are considerably more flattering than the way she’s been dressing.

I think that’s why TLo are always saying that she needs to work the Joan look more often, because it flatters her shape. You find a silhouette that works, and then you can play with how much cleavage or leg to show/not show. I hate to bring up Octavia Spencer again from last year, but if you notice, the vast majority of her (very successful) red carpet looks were all essentially the same shape of cut of dress, with the differences in the fabric, beading, etc., color, length, and the like. And she wasn’t necessarily always the sexpot.

        • BrooklynBomber

The Joan silhouette is still a character, and it’s all about THE BODY. I feel like Christina, whoever she is, is lost in all that. I saw her once in person and she looked like a very pretty, somewhat delicate young woman. That was the vibe I got, anyway.

          • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I completely agree that Joan is a character; I’m not saying that she should dress like Joan 24/7, just that there are elements of that shape that are flattering to her that she should translate into the real world. She – or her stylists – need to adopt some of those elements and make them Christina’s.

            • BrooklynBomber

For me that black lace dress shown in the white board is a better silhouette for her. Not the black lace, necessarily, but the silhouette.  (And I hope it didn’t seem like I was suggesting you don’t know Joan’s a character — I wasn’t thinking that!)

            • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

               No – we’re all good. :)

But, yes, that was a fantastic dress on her! I was also in love with the Tadashi Shoji she wore about a week and a half ago… http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2012/09/werq-christina-hendricks-in-tadashi-shoji.html

      • MilaXX

I hate the way  Christian makes those overworked bodice on her. If she’s going to go strapless I think a clean, smooth line would be better. Plus she looks better in saturated colors.

      • Winter_White

Wow, BB, I agree with everything you said here!  (Matches and kerosene, next?)

        • BrooklynBomber

I’ll bring the matches–you bring the kerosene!

    • Billie_Dawn

Hannah Simone’s was by far my favorite yellow of the night. Nice and soft rather than lemon-y and eye-searing. It looks great with her coloring.

    • apt9000

Zooey looks annoyed that her dress doesn’t show off her black tights.

    • iCouture

Kelly Osbourne needs a little black bob, and she would look fierce as shit!!

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I’m seriously ready for her to dye her hair back to a color found in nature. Please.

        • bitchybitchybitchy

Isn’t it time for Kelly to visit the L’Oreal colorist for a candid consultation about that purple/lilac tint-as in, Honey, give it up.

    • Jepham

I didn’t see any of these dresses live but have looked through a few pictures online. Every picture I’ve seen so far of Kelly Osborne she had a big smile on her face and what looked like a mouthful of red teeth. Couldn’t wait to hear what TLo had to say about that but she’s not smiling here. Did she have lipstick teeth last night?
Droopy boobs can ruin a pretty dress (I’m looking at you, Heidi).

    • christinewithanx

I hope I get the Sofia Mermaid Doll for Xmas!!!!

    • Snailstsichr

Zooey’s skin is luminous in that color.

      • Magatha

Yeah, she looks good. And hey, bonus points for No Black Tights!

      • MilaXX

She had it custom made in that color to match her eyes

    • afabulous50

Zoey D. has some serious crazy eyes going on there!  I love Sofia Vergara in that dress…I mean COME ON!

    • ConnieBV

      Christina H. looks a-fucking-mazing.

    • DCSheehan

Ashley Judd’s hair is crazy. Give it a Twitter account now!

    • Imasewsure

      Love Jessica!
Hopeful that Ellen and Portia are just having a bad month (and will go back to normal soon).
Melissa – NO!  I think she is too involved in the design process – that’s a problem since she may not have the best sense of what looks good on her – still I love love love her husband who plays the music teacher in the Target commercials – so I’m giving her a pass anyway

    • Michelle Cunningham

y’know, I’m beginning to think that Ellen has buried the real Portia under the rose bushes and replaced her with someone else and NOONE has noticed!  They just all assumed she’d had bad surgery…

    • colleenjanel

Mayim has achieved sleek and sophisticated while maintaining modesty in the past. And she ALMOST achieved it here. I think the problem was the drapey neckline. Without the extra fabric and a simple high-ish v-neck, that dress would have been perfection. The drapey neckline took it into ‘bubbie-of-the-groom’ territory.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1208138556 Sara Munoz Munoz

But she is so gorgeous, I have to give her a pass.

      • formerlyAnon

I liked this dress on her because somehow (and it may just be makeup, hair & the red color) she looked pretty in it, and often I’ve thought she looks a tad stodgy in her more modest event dresses.

What I disliked about this is that (at least in this photo) I think it makes her look thicker through the middle than she is. Or than I think she is.

    • http://www.lindamerrill.com Linda Merrill

I think Melissa McC could have worn Mayim’s dress and it would have looked way more flattering on her, both in fit and color. She has got to get over the 3/4 poufy sleeves and round necklines! V-shaped necklines, lowish cut are so much more lengthening! I get a little mad at her, I have to admit. She’s not doing us big & short girls many favors with her clothing. She’s not likely getting gowns thrown at her like Michelle Dockery would, but with her money she could hire a seamstress to custom make all her clothes. If she’s using a stylist, she needs to fire them pronto!

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Like I said before… see Octavia Spencer from last awards season.

    • Jennifer L.

“Or she had a terrible childhood experience with crayons” – love it!

    • MilaXX

Bless you guys, I’m exhausted just looking at the posts.

Amanda Peet – pretty but a blah color
      Archie Panjabi – great color
Ariel Winter – Sheesh! She is 15!
Ashley Judd – pretty color but better suited for her mother
Christina  Hendricks – I think Siriano is too fussy fir her. The bottom is fine, but I wish the top didn’t have all those pleats. It adds volume where she doesn’t need any.
Ellen & Portia – Ellen is fine, but Portia looks a hot mess. What happened to her face?
Emily Van Camp – that dress does nothing for her
      Hannah Simone – pretty
Heidi Klum – I dont mind the accessories but the double split takes this straight to hoochie-ville
Jane Levy – loved this blue on her
      Jessica Lange – okay
Julia Ormond – much better hair, dress suits her
Kelly Osbourne – hair needs to be styled rather than hanging straight
      Kristin Wiig – drab
Lena Dunham – cool hair cut, but awful dress
      Lily Rabe – pretty
Mayim Bialik – pretty color but I agree, it’s aging on her. I’d love to see her styled by Clinton Kelly for an event
Melissa McCarthy – this is better than some of her other looks. I wish she had at least gotten it in a color.
Melissa Rauch – love this color green
Sofia Vergara – it’s too much. It’s sparkly, tight, cut out under boob and cut low in the back
Zooey Deschanel – first of all I don’t understand a grown woman wants to look like a Disney princess and this is just too much frou frou

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Zooey is doing her Ashley Olson face from SNL; Lily Rabe has clearly gotten over worrying about long-dead babies! Wowza! Why why why wasn’t Emily in one of those super-diva looks from the fashion spread you found!?

    • http://www.facebook.com/evie.michael Evie Michael

As always, I love your commentary!! But I gotta say, while I usually agree with you guys, you were REALLY easy on Glenn Close, Ashley Judd, and Lena Dunham. I think each of them looked disastrous, no?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LCM5POTSHO74MUOQO6IAV4YUBE Jessica

Why is taffeta so popular all of a sudden?  It looked terrible at the proms in the 1980s and it looks terrible now.

What’s with all the “bump its” in the hair?  Yuk.

      re: Lena Dunham:
This looks better in pictures than it did on camera. But it’s still way too much dress for her. Love her hair, though.

Really? THIS is “better”? Wow, I can’t imagine what she looked like on the TV because this is so bad. I can’t believe this is “custom”. I’d be pissed, too.

      • alyce1213

This dress is a crime.  And the hair — what’s to love?

      • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

She always looks super cute in pictures on instagram, why does she look so frumpy here?

    • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

Okay, Christina Hendricks’ greige annoyed me so much that, thanks to a late lunch, I photoshopped that gown in several different colors.

Conclusion: she looks a LOT better in dark teal, burnt orange, and most dramatic: dark rich chocolate brown shot with orange. Royal blue was okay but deep purple looked better.

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

This dress would have been 1000 times better in just about any rich, saturated color.

      • mhleta

Ooo, yes to dark teal! The other thing that’s disturbing to me is that she looks utterly tortured, like she can’t breathe or eat or even sit down. That belt is giving me acid reflux just looking at it. She’s so beautiful, I hate to see her distorted into some misogynistic asshole’s ideal of what a woman’s should be. (Sorry. I just watched the MM ep where her fiance rapes her and I’m feeling a little tender for her.)

    • ghopping

I kind of feel like TLo uses the word hipster too loosely from time to time.

    • Winter_White

Melissa Rauch:  only a little bit of the underskirt is visible here, but I love the two tones — that beautiful emerald and the bluish-green underneath — in that gown.

    • Carla_Charlton

Emily VanCamp (er..what show is she on?) looked better on live camera (yes, I watched some of it live) — she looked really comfortable in her dress, but elegant, as well.  By contrast, Julia Ormond looks very UNcomfortable — I think she needs a new stylist because she always looks uncomfortable and she’s beautiful.  I think she’d do better to do more of a “natural” look rather than a “glamor” look.  And Heidi.  What can you say, but “of course.”

      • MilaXX

        Emily is on Revenge

    • Cathy S

Of all the gowns I’ve seen Ariel Winter’s is my favorite. Just beautiful. There were some fabulous colors on the red carpet this year.

    • YoungSally

Ellen (and especially Portia) seem to be visiting the same “facialist” as Jennie Garth…..I wonder if they are all doing Tracy Anderson routines.

    • Judy_S

I wanted to like Zooey D’s dress but just couldn’t quite. The torso seemed disproportionately long, which should be OK but but in fact made me want to grab the top and yank it an inch up.

    • nannypoo

I love the orange and the cobalt blue that so many women wore this year.

    • Stubenville

I just realized with a shudder that Portia de Rossi’s outfit is made of a fabric remarkably similar to some heinous macrame curtains that “graced” the sun porch of my Aunt Eileen… circa 1964.

    • janetjb

“Hipster Snow White” is an excellent description of Zooey.

Love all of the color on the RC

    • crash1212

Boy, that picture of Kelly Osbourne really doesn’t show what a gorgeous color that dress was. I thought she looked beautiful – even liked the hair match. Also, saw a shot of Kristen Wiig in front of a colored backdrop and that dress is beautiful. She didn’t look washed out AT ALL, in fact, her skin was glowing. I loved it.

    • http://twitter.com/BrienneCalmer Brienne Calmer

Jessica Lange, I love the color, but the hair and accessories are all wrong.  You’re supposed to shave your head and carry a begging bowl while wearing that.

    • meowing

I was shocked to read that Melissa McCarthy has a degree in fashion design.  Doesn’t speak too well of her school, I guess.

      • MilaXX

Not really, PR has lots of Fashion school grads who send way worse things down the runway.

    • Dagney

I love that all the MM women are kicking ass and taking names.

    • Sharon Jessup Joyce

Archie Panjabi and Melissa Rauch took first and second place, in that order, on their overall look. Flawless!

    • mmc2315

Oooh, is anyone counting the number of Christian Siriano dresses?

    • http://TheDoseofReality.com/ The Dose of Reality

Did Portia de Rossi have some work done? She is unrecognizable for me. Oh, my.
Melissa Rauch made me gasp. Her hair and make up were beautiful and that color was stunning. Wow!

      • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I said earlier that poor Portia does not look well at all.  I mean, I just want to cover her up in a blanket and feed her soup, poor thing.

    • librarygrrl64

Wins here are Archie Panjabi, Jane Levy, Lily Rabe, and Melissa Rauch. Portia deRossi makes me sad. She looks ill. LOVE Lena Dunham’s hair, such an improvement, but I’m not sold on that silhouette for her. She’d look better with a v-neck, I’m thinking, and a lower waistband. Wondering if Mayim Bialik covers up like that for religious reasons? She’s pretty devout. Gorgeous color for her, though, and her hair and makeup look great.

    • Lilithcat

Re: Hendricks – you all must have found a good picture of her, because in other shots I’ve seen she is positively spilling out of the top of that dress.  The first one I saw, my reaction was that she (or maybe Siriano) hates her boobs and was punishing them for some unknown misdeeds.

      • alyce1213

I thought so too, it needed a better fit up top. And a better color overall. But the shape is nice for her.

    • BrightsideSusan

As a larger woman like Melissa McCarthy, I do not do sleeveless.  I agree that this sleeve was too heavy, though.  Sheer sleeves or a 3/4 length cover what should be covered.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5UQHEKG5EDX4T6NMARUC565TPQ Amy

Hipster Snow White! I love it!!

Ok, I know she is Heidi and she loves to show her leg (and then some) but I think she crossed the classy line. I am all for sexy and seafoam on a blonde of her stature but slits and tits galore? Come on…there were children present!

    • theblondette

      My comments on this batch:
      my
girlfriend Christina is looking pretty good! Portia de Rossi, WHAT IS
THAT OUTFIT OMG. Heidi Klum – I don’t like dresses that are slashed to
the thigh AND the breastbone. One or the other please. Wow, Kelly Osbourne is so thin these days. Sofia
Vergara looks like a Vegas showgirl. Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I
just feel for the BIG BIG red carpet events like the Oscars (and the
Emmys is TV Oscars) you go classy, not brassy.

    • Zippypie

There really were some gorgeous colors on the carpet this year, contrasted with some pretty dingy neutrals.  Christina and Emily were the worst offenders of the latter.  Just dreary.  Sophia Vergara looks ridiculous.  Gorgeous color but speaking of being pumped into a showgirls dress.  Just tacky.

Too many of the dresses looked the same in design.  And way way way too much shiny!!!

    • formerlyAnon

Many of the ladies looked very good, but it’s more fun to be negative:
Did Sofia Vergara not look like the most Deco hood ornament ever??

Ms. Klum is wearing a very glamorous lounging outfit – the kind rich
Hollywood wives in a certain era of movie might wear as a
not-terribly-believable poolside garment. It is in a lovely fabric. It
doesn’t add up to a lovely dress, IMO.

      I like the *idea* of
Portia de Rossi’s jumpsuit as well as I can like a jumpsuit, but it
looks like the pockets are gapping a bit, which is unbecoming &
unconscionable in a garment that cost as much as this probably did.
Also, it needed a belt or scarf or jewelry – something of interest
      between him & neck.

I LOVED Kelly Osbourne’s makeup, or maybe
just the fact that she’s not giving the same open-mouthed smile she
      usually poses with.

    • alyce1213

Whoever dresses Melissa McCarthy should be publicly flogged. That dress is an atrocity — fabric, silhouette — it just makes her look old and does not flatter.
Lena Dunham just frightens me.  And I don’t scare easy.

Christina Hendricks is SO improved, but the belt is bad — it just sticks out like a bad, stiff sportswear belt — and the dress is a little tight at the bust. A rich color would have been a good thing. But she’s doing much better, the shape is phenomenal and she looks so pretty.

Lily Rabe’s, Jane Levy’s and especially Kelly-My-Angel’s dresses win this round, I think. Ariel Winter’s is quite beautiful, but I wish it had been one length.

I saw a lot of color, a lot of yellow, and way too much dull grey/beige, which is apparently the new blush.

    • kimmeister

Everything about Ashley Judd’s look combined to make her eyes look teeny tiny.

    • http://twitter.com/emilyf007 emily

      Lena Dunham looks HUGE.

    • GTrain

      So.over.Sofia.Vergara.  Of course, indeed.

    • ccm800

I dont mind the muted colors when paired with a really delicate dress.

    • Tamara Hogan

Jane Levy FTW, whoever she is.

IMO, all mermaid dresses should be banned from the RC. Eww.

    • guest2visits

Also thought Zooey’s dress was perfect on her, pretty color too.  I liked that Emily Van Camp wore a fussy dress that didn’t look
fussy – it turned out to be one of the more beautiful dresses.  I thought Kristen Wiig’s little dress was nice, but she needed lip color
and more special hair-do.  Kelly O. looked great in her gown, as did Christina H.  Sadly, the only pretty thing about Ashley’s dress
was the color. I don’t know why the frumpy styling.  And Heidi’s could have been a beautiful, classic looking dress in a very pretty
shade; but duel panty-high slits turned it into a dated night gown with matching slippers.

    • http://twitter.com/monapily monapily

Portia is serving up Gozer the Gozarian realness. <3

Which, of course would mean that there is no Ellen, only Zuul.

    • notdorothygale

Ellen and Portia clearly had hers and hers “freshening”. Not good for either of them and yes, they are becoming unrecognizable. Overall I loved the gowns and am especially proud of my PR favorite Christian having so many beautiful creations on the runway.

      • http://twitter.com/bentley1530 Bentley1530

This is not a good picture but from watching the Ellen show promos over the summer, I think Ellen is looking more like her mother every year.   Portia looks very strange in this picture.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

Where was Heidi’s “of course”?  Looks like she was showing her tan lines as well.  Along with her usual amount of skin.  Smell that?  It’s desperation.

    • quiltrx

I don’t know Lily Rabe (I don’t watch much ‘regular’ TV, mostly movies)…but her dress is MAGICAL.

This was really a pretty good RC this year!  Some were less-than-spectacular, BUT I have to commend so many for doing something NOT expected.  (Like Heidi’s hair…pretty great.)

And I am so annoyed by Vergara, and I love you for whipping out the ‘of course’ on her!

    • bitterk

      Meh

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

Melissa Rauch’s dress is one of the loveliest things I’ve seen on the red carpet–great fabric, great cut, great color, and she looks both comfortable and confident in it.

      *applause!!!*

    • SpcilK

I thought Jessica lange was Nicole Ritchie.

    • cam_lo

zooey looks amazing, heidi looks incredibly trashy (so disappointing to me, and her boobs look saggy) and this is actually the first time i’ve thought kelly osbourne looked attractive.

    • Lilak

Good for you, Lily Rabe, bringing some very cool Tony Awards style to the West Coast TV show!

And I’m with TLo in liking Zooey’s gown (except for a little problem with the “2 teaspoons” design of the bust).  Wish her hair hadn’t been so heavy and bulky, though (+ bangs seemed even more dense than usual).

      And Mayim was a vision.

    • https://twitter.com/LisaF1163 Lisa

      “Mars Attacks hair”  - Bwaaahaah!!!

I don’t know if I”m alone in this, but I love Kelly’s matching hair and dress, and she looks fierce!

Terrible colors on Christina Hendricks and Emily Van Camp – awful, just washes them out.

Is Ashley Judd doing some sort tribute to Minnie Pearl?  Hell, even Minnie Pearl put a big ole hat over it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NUZ2RGIDRXKK6ADHFPPCR6S3WI MariaM

I take back what I said about Christina Hendricks on FB.  This is a much more flattering picture and I agree that the shape works.  And nude shades on a redhead are not so bad — the saturated hair helps. Hair and makeup are gorgeous.  Kenley Collins should be Zoe D.’s full-time designer.  I think that would work well.

    • julnyes

      I think Mayim looks lovely.

    • http://twitter.com/SuzanneCitere SuzanneCitere

Heidi was my high score of the night! I can’t believe I am saying that, but it’s true! And I am not sure what Ellen was doing with that scarf on – apparently it was a gazillion degrees there last night.

    • siriuslover

I love Mayim’s and Zooey’s. And the vibrant colors on the carpet. As much as I love greys and silvers, way too much and way too drab this year.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

i think the amount of undoubtable pain christina hendricks is in due to her undergarments is surely worth it cos she looks really truly great. kudos to christian siriano too–i dont know how often he’s dressed anyone as well as this. at least not since his tenure on PR, that is. once in awhile but not that often, i guess, but here: yep, good job.

i also like kelly osborne’s dress. boy is she motivated.

who else? i barely remember anyone else. oh–the sudden madness of portia de rossi degeneres. suddenly PDRD reminds of–anne heche, i think it was? who went bats? i must say that it took until i finished that last sentence for me to remember she was also attached to ED. uh oh. i dont wanna think it but–uh oh.

anyway. could i remember anyone else’s dress i might comment. the only other thing i can remember to say is that most of the women in yellow were, in fact, not wearing chartreuse. citron, maybe, but not chartreuse. there was one woman who wore it, i cant remember who, but she was featured on jezebel & not here. were she featured here the difference in color wouldve been obvious.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

I agree that the actual presence of color was so refreshing. We saw it last spring in the shows and I am so glad that it showed up on the red carpet. That being said, why did Christian S. make a dress the color of dirty dishwater for Ms. Hendricks? Why Christian, why?

    • e jerry powell

Didn’t Vergara’s ass rip that dress?
      Why, yes.  Yes, it did.

See, I told you.  Zooey looks completely put out after the battle her dress had with that Donatella Chain Mail Lucy Liu was wearing.

The other picture of Melissa McCarthy, the one where she’s standing next to her plus one.  She looked very Mafiosa Mother of the Bride.  Very angry with the son-in-law to be.  And ready to go to the bastard’s funeral already.

No one asked, but I’m over Kelly Osbourne already.  Frau Klum looks like she stepped out of 1978; all she really needed was more reathering in the hair.

That Pucci is more like a lemon sorbet than Electric Urine Yellow. Much more palatable.

Say what you will, I like batshit crazy Portia.  Reminds me of Mrs. Roper a little bit, and Audra Lindley is always fun.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1129137319 Paula Pertile

Kelly Osbourne looks amazing, matchy hair and all.
I’m a little freaked out that Jessica Lange is now referred to as a fierce old broad.

Zooey Deschanel’s dress is certainly beautiful, but she looks pretty angry in every picture of her on the RC. And I kept wondering if she had on her trusty black tights underneath.

Did someone forget to take the hanger out of Lena Dunham’s dress? Because those linebacker shoulders are insane!

I think it’s a combination of the cut and her sloppy posture. She’s always slumped like that, with her bullshit fake diffidence. I guess she thinks she’s Taylor Swift’s awkward hipster cousin.

I can’t get over Hannah Simone’s tank top tan lines!

I love Emily vanCamp’s gown! It’s one of the most beautiful gowns I have seen in a while! Christine H – I have to disagree. I hate the color on her, and she looks like a 5 pound sausage stuffed in an2 pound casing. I am incredibly unimpressed with the work of PPS this past year.

I loved all the color, also! But I dislike that bridesmaid satin. Sad, that this is the best that the top designers in the world are opputting on actresses,

Loved Zoey’s dress but her hair was just weird, as was her affect.

looking at this again, I really dislike the pleating/folding on Christina Hendrick’s gown. In addition to being to busy on the bodice, that pleating always give her a titscrepancy. I really hope she connects with some other designers because as much as I like Siriano, he is not the designer for hr.

I get that Lena Dunham’s look isn’t sexy, but that dress is teh sad. Poor lady.

I so wish Christina would wear rich, saturated colors.  Maybe she wants to stay away from anything that would scream “Joan Holloway”, and Joan is usually a vibrant column of color

Christina Hendricks look like a godess here.

      Wow, Kelly Osbourne looks stunning.

Zooey Deschanel look is the best for me. I hated Christina Hendricks’s belt, it reminds me of a cheap trenchcoat.

YES, they are both slowly becoming unrecognizable. Or rather, stick a fork in ‘em.

      Tattoos and gowns?  Gross.

What is HAPPENING to Kelly Osborne?  She is starting to look like someone stretched her out in Photoshop.  Stop with the weight loss, you look perfect, have some cake!
