2012 Emmy Awards Red Carpet – Part 2

Posted on September 24, 2012

Moving right along…

Allison Williams in Oscar de la Renta Spring 2013

We said the other day that she tends to dress a little old for her age, but this brilliant green really pops and she looks amazing. Jewelry’s a little half-assed, though.

Anna Chlumsky in custom Christian Siriano

Wow, this doesn’t even come close to how this looked on our TV. We thought she looked stunning – even though we were QUITE OVER all the grey and greige on that RC.

Anna Gunn in J. Mendel Fall 2012

Standard. The hair is awful.

Cat Deeley in Tadashi Shoji

Also kind of standard, but she looks great.

Edie Falco in Stella McCartney

From the neck up, she looks like she just finished a grueling workout, but the dress is pretty fierce.

Emilia Clarke in Chanel Resort 2013

It’s … interesting, we’ll give it that. And head-turning, in its way. We just wish she’d picked a skirt and stuck with it. Also, “nude” shoes? With THIS? Please.

Ginnifer Goodwin in Monique Lhuillier Resort 2013

We hated this one at first glance because it looked like offal smeared all over her dress, but the longer we looked at it, the more we appreciated it for being a little different without being the usual Goodwin crack-fashion.

Glenn Close in Bibhu Mohapatra

Jena Malone in J. Mendel Resort 2013

This is hitting all our “do not like” buttons, mainly for being more complicated than it needs to be, but overall, we find it kind of interesting and beautiful. Love the shoes. Hate the hair.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus in Vera Wang

We like it, but her boobs look like a suspension bridge.

Julie Bowen in Monique Lhuillier Resort 2013

This is a very flattering picture, because we thought she looked awful on camera. This is not her color at all. And her hair was a mess. The shape is nice, though.

Kat Dennings in J. Mendel Pre-Fall 2012

As we tweeted last night, “Kat Dennings sure does love her boobs.” As well she should, because they’re spectacular. But there’s no way she wasn’t hoiking that top up all night. We saw her do it at least 3 times on the red carpet.

Kathy Griffin in Oscar de la Renta

Wow. Miss Kathy tends toward bright colors on the RC, so this is kind of a dramatic change for her. She looks great.

Martha Plimpton in custom Christian Siriano

Bless, this girl. Someone really needs to show her how to pose. We have yet to see a picture of her on the RC where she doesn’t look like she’s in the middle of shouting a profanity. Love the dress.

Michelle Dockery in Louis Vuitton

Lady Mary, you are confined to your room until you figure out how to dress yourself. This is AWFUL. You can’t tell us that designers aren’t falling all over themselves to dress her. And THIS is what she picked.

Padma Lakshmi in Monique Lhuillier Resort 2013

Still can’t stand her, though.

Sarah Hyland in custom Marchesa

Pretty and sweetly romantic, which suits her to a T.

Sufe Bradshaw in David Meister Signature

She is HILARIOUS on Veep – and that’s saying something, because the whole cast has crazy comedy chops. Love the dress; wish she’d chosen accessories with a little more pop to them.

Zosia Mamet in Bibhu Mohapatra Spring 2013

Ridiculously over-complicated dress.

  • My God, Glenn Close looks like her dress has been mauled by a savage animal

    •  I can’t even find the words to describe how awful I think it looks.

      • teensmom99

        and tragically unflattering.

    • Also, I believe I can see her foundation garments.  It should go without saying by now that that is a major pet peeve of mine.

      • Couldn’t agree more.  Especially for someone working at this level.  And for an event that can be planned for so far out. No Excuse.

      •  I don’t think that’s her foundation garments; I think it’s just the way the dress is. But that in no way detracts how ugly and unflattering this is.

        • You could be right — but notice right next to her clutch, it looks like there’s a horizontal line across her thigh that looks like it could be the bottom of a body shaper.

          •  OH. Well… hm. There’s absolutely NO EXCUSE for that. I’d fire whoever OK’ed her to walk out the door in this.

          •  This is why all girls need a gay.

    •  The more I look at it, the more I’m bothered about the shape it gives her. She looks like a linebacker in this.

      • Agreed!  She is really such a tiny person and she looks quite big here.  So unflattering.  How sad.

    • AnnPopovic

Yes, but…I couldn’t help it. When I saw that dress, first thing that popped in my head? It’s the perfect representation in fabric of that horrid character she plays in Damages, isn’t it? It’s an older, richer, more refined version of the woman who cooked the pet rabbit.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

You know, if this was a short dress, it might be pretty nice.  The bottom ruins it, methinks.

    • UsedtobeEP

I think her dress looks related to January Jones’s dress—the angry mother of it, maybe.

    • I thought it looked like her dress was a savage animal mauling Glenn Close

  • Sobaika

Someone inform Ginnifer Goodwin that she looks perma-crazy on the red carpet and give her posing lessons.

    • Spicytomato1

Seriously. This photo does nothing to budge her from my irrational hate list.

    • call_me_schmeg

she leads with the bitch-face and the body just follows.

    • barbarasingleterry

Her shoes remind me of Mary Poppins’ shoes in the animated part of the movie.  In fact, the dress and everything about her reminds be of Mary Poppins…

  • That bust dart in Lady Mary’s dress looks like it was stapled together.

    • Someone needs to find her a good tailor because this dress is way too big on her. Plus, the pockets just do something wrong to the skirt. She needs to get her hand out of the left one because it’s dragging the dress down. That and she looks like she’s about to fall over.

  • Fordzo

Don’t care how she dresses or poses – Martha Plimpton is the gal I want to be sitting next to all night.  She looks like so. much. fun.

    • Agreed. I think she might have been shouting an obscenity which makes me like her even more.

    •  Yup. And based on her twitter feed, I reckon she probably is often mid-profanity.

    • gabbilevy

I’ve adored her for a long time and I’m so thrilled she’s getting more attention again lately. Got to see her live in Cymbeline (with Michael Cerveris, who is a theater god) a few years back and she was wonderful.

    • She looks like a hell of a gal. But it also looks like she tucked the top of her dress into the bottom a little too forcefully.

  • Jean-Luc Bresson

Wow, I was jarred when you say you can’t stand Padma. Of all the reality show beautiful hosts, I find her to be the classiest!

    •  To be honest, she bothers me, too. I really want to know what TLo doesn’t like about her though.

      • kschwarting

I was thinking the same thing.  Dish!

      • Kimbolina

She bugs me too.  The words “insufferable” and “pretentious” come to mind.

        •  She seems so fake on camera.

        • I am not able to understand the words you’re saying because I like her, and she looks amazing in that orange dress.

    • alyce1213

For me she’s fine until she opens her mouth.  Which is a problem for a TV personality.

  • halleygee

Ginnifer G. is my favorite here by far – the most interesting dress, hair and makeup look great.

    Martha Plimpton – oy.

    • nancylee61

I love it, too! I think the gown is interesting and beautiful. And very, very different.

  • Allison Williams FTW.  The green looks fantastic on her.  Glenn’s angry dress struck me as a big step up from a lot of her prior looks.

  • Edie Falco looks AWFUL. What a shame, ruined a great dress.

Julie Bowen – that’s an amazing dress and you’re right, it totally didn’t read that way on camera.

  • Chickadeep

Zosia’s dress is a trainwreck. Lady Mary’s is a tragedy. Anna G.’s hairstyle is doing her jawline no favors. Julie B.’s dress is NOBODY’s color (outside of a 1990s music video, that is).

Anna C’s dress is lovely – good job, Christian! Sarah H. has a pretty good RC track record; this one doesn’t upset her streak. And you’re right, Kathy G. brought her A Game here.

Can’t believe you guys didn’t ding Ginnifer for her ULTRA-matchy-matchy shoes, but then I took another look at the dress and realized that it was so loud and distracting that they probably blended right in. And I am SO with you guys on Emilia’s nude pumps…they’re boring as is, but couldn’t be more wrong for that outfit.

    • Disagree with you about Julie’s dress – I think darker-skinned women can wear that color well.

      • MilaXX

And Paula Patton did when she wore that last year

  • Anathema_Device

The angle of the pleating at the shoulders of Close’s dress plus the sleeves make her look really broad. Like a fancy Coke machine.

I really loved Goodwin’s dress at first sight. The highlighter color is doing Bowen no favors.

  • LOVED Anna Chlumsky’s, Edie Falco’s and Sarah Hyland’s dresses (and their entire looks). Just gorgeous.

Michelle Dockery’s dress look like a boring bridesmaid gown. Not just any bridesmaid gown – a BORING one. And it’s too shiny.

  • ChiliP

Wow, Padma looks stunning. That is her dress.

I was amused by the cleavage parade last night. The first three presenters (Amy Poehler, Zooey Deschanel and Kat Dennings) all seemed to be competing in the “who is showing the most Emmy boob tonight?” category. Which is funny considering I don’t normally associate the first two ladies with revealing cleavage.

  • schadenfreudelicious

Glenn Close’s dress looks so angry it’s ready to boil a bunny!

    • megohd

Glenn Close’s hair is geriatric. Which is not how I think of Glenn.

  • I love Ginnifer Goodwin’s dress, which flummoxes me.

Will we be seeing any red carpet gents today? I realize that few to none of them ever do anything interesting, but they’re pretty to look at.

  • Scimommy

I am more upset with Lady Mary for wearing that thing than when she was stringing poor Matthew along. And that’s saying something.

  • Julia L-D looked……aged.  As in, caught the shuttle bus from the retirement place to come to the ceremony.  Betty White looked better.  Julia’s hair is so severe and unflattering, and that bustline did NOTHING for her.  Plus there was a really unflattering seam across the bottom of the butt.  Hideous.

    • Spicytomato1

Agreed. She is so beautiful and this getup does nothing whatsoever to enhance it.

    • pattyw

Needed some lip color and the Quaker hair did her no favors. I didn’t see the suspension bridge across her boobs, but now I can’t unsee it.

    • Call me Bee

See?  And when I saw her onstage for the acceptance speech, I thought she and the dress looked wonderful.  We humans are pretty funny…

  • Tatiana Luján

Sarah Hyland, do yourself a favour and burn those shoes.

  • halo323

I adore me some Lady Mary, but Michelle Dockery’s dress looks like something that got someone thrown off of PR, puckered seams and all.  (Love the color on her, though!)

    • And the saddest part is, in spite of its ugliness and poor construction, it’s Louis Vuitton, so probably cost about 6 months of my mortgage payments.

    •  The colour is perfect – just too shiny and too crumpled.

  • understateddiva

ok, what was HAPPENING with Michelle Dockery’s dress?  It looks like it’s actually pinned all the way down the side?!

  • Spicytomato1

My vote for the winner goes once again to one of the younger set — Sarah Hyland. The lip color might be a tinge too hash but otherwise I think she’s perfect. And perfectly appropriate.

I wish she could pass along style tips to her train wreck of a TV mom. I don’t know what it is about Julie Bowen but the woman has never looked pulled together to me. Something is always off.

    • megohd

She always looks frantic, and incredibly uncomfortable in her skin. Like Claire Dunphy isn’t exactly a character stretch for her.

      • Spicytomato1

Ha, I could see that. She’s hilarious as Claire but that persona clearly doesn’t translate to being composed on the red carpet.

  • mjude

i love Martha Plimpton. tlo’s comment about her in the middle of yelling a profanity.  i am still laughing.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Boooooored. Can’t Blanchett or Swinton do some tv? Then we’ll see some REAL red carpet fashion.

  • I thought Zosia Mamet was Sarah Silverman when I was watching last night because I had the sound turned off. Also, I think she was wearing this with Chuck Taylors (or something similar). Which also made me mistake her for Sarah Silverman.

I must admire Kat Dennings not only for her enviable rack, but for having the guts to put it on display in this manner. Not only was she hiking it up, there were several moments at which I seriously thought the whole thing was going to pop right out, like a clown out of a music box. I would’ve asked the designer to sew on a halter strap, or something.

    • “They’re real and they’re spectacular” !

      • Damn straight. No implants on display here. Those are the real deal.

  • Karishma Gautam-Santos

Glenn Close’s dress is Bibhu Mohapatra, and not Christian Dior.

  • why no like padma?! i think she’s great and she can rock pretty much anything she outs on.

  • Michelle Dokery is SO BEAUTIFUL. It pains me to see her wearing this. She might have been better off saying ‘screw it’ and pulling an LBD out of her own closet.

  • Everything looked ‘department store’ to me. I thought the whole EMMY’s were quite boring really…

  • Jena Malone needs to give her shoes to Edie Falco.  Usually the mere mention of Stella McC’s name is enough to make me roll my eyes, but Falco looked FIERCE, and I rather liked the simple hair (although not the side pieces sticking out).

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

I think that Edie Falco’s dress is the first Stella McC’s that I have actually liked in a long, long time.  Didn’t like Ms. Falco’s hair, however.

  • SapphoPoet

Glad to see some orange dresses–my favorite color.

    • mhleta

Me too! I get all giddy inside when I see it done well.

  • Candigirl1968

Edie Falco looks good, but I wonder if we’ve seen Kate Winslet in too many versions of this dress for it to be red carpet interesting anymore.
That may be the best Kathy Griffin has looked.  Whatever she did, she just seems less hard looking than usual.  Sarah Hyland clearly must be a magical being because even though it is a little on the bride-y side, I do not hate that Marchesa gown on her – it looks pretty and youthful.

    • teensmom99

I figured out last night that Marchesa works for the teens.

    • makeityourself

      I liked Kathy’s Emmy hat.

  • understateddiva

What is HAPPENING with Michelle Dockery’s dress?  It looks like it is pinned in several places, especially in photos where you can see the side.  Did they alter it in the limo?

    • sanja_ramic

I think some silly intern must have spilled coffee on her actual dress and this is all they could get at such short notice, or perhaps she’s being blackmailed? How else do we explain this…thing?

  • My 3.5 year old son saw Ginnifer Goodwin come out and yelled “It’s a cake, Mommy!”

  • alula_auburn

LOL at Martha Plimpton’s expressions.  That’s how we roll in Chicago theater!

Why is there so much bad hair?

Anna C. looks fab–but I have a special bonus love for anyone who comes out of child-stardom and seems not only sane, but cool.

    • charlotte

… anyone who comes out of child-stardom and seems not only sane, but cool.
Martha Plimpton being the epitome of that!

  • Wow — Christian Siriano had 3 people wearing his gowns === he has really done well

  • Winter_White

Padma!  She looks so beautiful.  I find her entertaining — more than once she has said in an interview (hear her stoner voice):  “Some compare my body to the Chola Bronzes.”  Makes me laugh every time I think of it.  It’s actually probably true…but is precisely the kind of thing one doesn’t say about oneself, unless one is…oh, never mind.

  • filmcricket

It’s weird, Ginnifer Goodwin’s dress read so much more red on my TV last night – an orangey-red, sure, but not as orange as it does here. Now I’m worried about which of my monitors needs adjusting.

Martha Plimpton’s dress fits beautifully, but that’s a terrible colour combo on her. Agreed with other commenters that she’s the one I’d want to sit next to all evening, though. I’m so pleased she won for her stint on The Good Wife, she was the best out of a stellar pack of guest stars that show commands. (Although, as an aside, how did Michael J. Fox not win for the same show? Who votes against Michael J. Fox?)

What has Anna Gunn done to her face? I don’t watch Breaking Bad so maybe this isn’t a recent development, but she looks nothing like Deadwood’s Mrs. Bullock to me. I wouldn’t have recognized her without the caption.

  • nannypoo

I don’t mind Julia LD’s boob bridge, but has the woman never heard of lipstick? Ginnifer Goodwin, on the other hand, is no stranger to makeup. Closeups of her eye makeup in the red carpet interview were bizarre.

  • Martha Plimpton’s wiki has her listed as a “former model.” I adore her as an actress, but this is just another goofy snapshot-style picture that does not scream model.

    • kimmeister

      Maybe she was a hand model . . .

      • thank you my dear for making me laugh out loud. I certainly think she’s a fine actress, but I went “model?! seriously?!”

        I wonder if she’s an ambiturner…

  • Carlos Abreu

sometimes i think that tom and lorenzo are a bit tied to an ideal of beauty that is typically american (not being rude, but u guys have 500 years of history)… and it tends to be a little cheasy, tacky or just outdated… the way they comment on the hair and some choices they make as being great dresses are some how pageantly depressing… they are very funny, but i have doubts on their finesse… maybe some fashion weeks in europe would be nice… other than that i love their PRunway comments.

    • mhleta

I’m so confused by this. What is “pageantly depressing”? What do you mean by “Doubts on their finesse”? And I also don’t understand…”(not being rude, but u guys have 500 years of history). Are you saying that because the US is a relatively young country that we have no sense of aesthetics? Please, elaborate on all these points. I’m so very curious.

      •  Me too. I’m not even sticking up for Americans from the patriotic point of view – I am just intrigued.

    • The red carpet IS a pageant.

Now, why don’t you tell everyone what you think of the dresses, rather than what you think of us?

  • nancylee61

Love Padma’s dress – wondering why you cannot stand her!!!

And Kat Dennings is so pretty!! But all I see are boobs!! I think actresses who want to be taken seriously do themselves a huge disservice dressing so overtly sexual. You can be sexy without showing 3/4 of your boobs and making everyone worry you are going to slip a nip. Those dresses take the wearer into trash territory.

  • GorgeousThings

Glenn Close’s dress looks like the advertisement posters for “Revenge”, doesn’t it?

Siriano certainly had a good showing on the RC, even though I didn’t care for much of it.

And Michelle Dockery’s dress? If I were Louis Vuitton, I would so fire whoever made it, because those seams are so puckery and badly sewn! If that were one of my students, I would have made them rip the seams out and redo them. AND press them properly. Really, LV? There’s no excuse for that.

  • AutumnInNY

Zosia Mamet’s top half of the dress looks like what the nuns might wear under their habit back in the day.
Julia Louis Dreyfus, nice color but a little matronly IMHO. Agree with Tlo. The top looks like one of Vera’s old skating costume designs.

Edie Falco, Julie Bowen, Jane K from 30 Rock… You’re at the Emmys wearing designer dresses and jewelery that cost thousands of dollars, millions of people are watching, you have hair and make-up people at your disposal, make an effort and comb your hair for God’s sake!

  • I loved Julie Bowen’s dress – for once she doesn’t look anorexic!

  • Love how Miss Kathy looks like she’s wearing an Emmy head-piece! (did someone already say that – haven’t read all the comments)

  • MilaXX

Allison Williams – great color, i like the earrings but not the bracelet
    Anna Chlumsky – pretty
Anna Gunn – when I saw her the first season of Breaking Bad I thought she was really pretty, i don’t think her RC looks do her any favors
Cat Deeley – glad she put her hair up, but the dress is fairly standard
Edie Falco – there were a couple of nice Stella McCartney looks last night. Hair is awful though
Emilia Clarke – fug dress, fug shoes
Ginnifer Godwin – I liked this on her, but the bag isn’t my favorite
    Glenn Close – hiddy
Jena Malone – I know this sounds fangirly, but I could actually see her as Joanna Mason when I saw this look. Shoes were fierce.
JLD – very pretty, loved the blue accessories
Julie Bowen – dress is okay, but she has thin hair & hasn’t yet figured out how to style it
Kat Dennings – a sneeze away from a peep show all night
Kathy Griffins – eh” she looks a little Miss Kitty to me
Martha Plimpton – this looked better on tv than it does in stills
Michelle Dockery – bitch face and a sad, wrinkled dress
Padma Lakshmi – pretty but boring
Sarah Hyland – pretty but too much fake tanner
Sufe Bradshaw – very pretty, loved the dress
Zosia Mamet – tragic. Bad hair, the dress is too  fussy down bottom. And the boob cups look weird

  • Zippypie

    Padma, that bitch, looks gorgeous.

What is with the shiny, Downton women?  I can see being tragic on screen, but this is hiddy. Joanne Froggett is marginally better in that her dress at least fit, but the shiny has got to go.  This is not an 80’s wedding party.

Breaking Bad women – you need this memo too.

    • mhleta

Why don’t we like Padma? I missed the memo. I’ve always admired her cool demeanor.

  • Edie Falco’s super heroine belt KILLS ME. I love her.

    • mhleta

Oy vey, the hair, though. It DOES look like it’s sweated to her head.

  • EverybodysStarling

Ugh, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is just never going off off my irrational hate list.

Looooove the Monique Lhuillier on Julie Bowen. The color is phenomenal.

    • mhleta

I love Julie Bowen’s look too, based on this picture, anyway. Disappointed to hear it didn’t read as well in motion. And HOORAY: she doesn’t look like she’s been locked in a basement for weeks with no food, which she did last year. I like the color because it adds volume, which is a good thing for her tiny body. (On Julianne Moore, however, the color seemed obnoxious and added unwanted volume.)

    • MaryMitch

Ms Louis-Drefus’ schoolmarm hair was awful, but I liked the dress.

      • homespunner

         Ruth Buzzi hair.

  • In_Stitches

Scrolling down all the looks, I find that each woman’s best accessory is her smile.  Zosia could have sold that Rorschach shamata if she looked like she was happy to be wearing it.

Best of the list?  Jenna Malone-it didn’t read as well on camera, but in stills she’s a goddess.  The dress fits like a dream, the hair and shoe give the whole look a ‘story’, I love it.

  • Ms_Flyover

No one will convince me that Kathy Griffin didn’t stand there specifically to make it look like she is wearing the emmy as a hat.

    • kimmeister

      *scrolls back and looks*
      *CHORTLES with laughter*

  • sashaychante

ACK!  Julia…who did you’re hair?  FIRE THAT PERSON NOW!   Kat Dennings, NEVER wear a dress that you must hike up repeatedly, no matter how spectacular your mammaries.  Sarah Hyland looks sweet and bohemian.  That is the BEST I’ve ever seen Kathy Griffin look in a gown.  She usually looks a little bit uncomfortable, but in this gown, she actually looks relaxed, and her hair looks very good.

  • jenno1013

Michelle Dockery’s dress is why gowns should never have pockets.  Evah.

The overly-layered look of Anna Gunn’s dress reminds me of some Project Runway contestant from a couple years back who always turned out gowns with skirts that looked like they’d eaten another skirt.  Can’t remember which contestant it was, which means they deserved to be forgotten.

  • Stubenville

    BAD TLo! I adore Padma!

  • VictoriaDiNardo

What’s with the necklace phobia?  Most of the strapless dresses would have looked better with a little something between the face and the boobs.
And don’t get me started on that ridiculous nail-cam.  Good grief.

  • Trisha26

Ginnifer Goodwin was another of my evening faves – love that high/low hem too. Edie Falco was one of my least favorites, the cut makes her look like a linebacker. Didn’t see Kathy Griffin on the red carpet – she looks lovely! (And yay TLo! I thought I was the only one who despised Padma.)

  • Martha is wearing a whole lotta dress; and Kathy G. is now my 2nd favorite Emmys vampire. I can’t even with the Stella McCartney.

  • A bunch of scarry run of the mill MOB (mother of the bride) gowns. T n L please hook me up with anyone of the dames and I will show them how to dress! REALLY!

    • Personally, I’d love to see some Bert Keeter on the red carpet. Make this happen.

      • minnye

        “LIKE” x 100

  • Jennifer Coleman

Seriously, I’ve been playing the What Would TLo Say game of predicting your comment and have won bonus points on Kat Dennings for thinking ‘That girl really likes her boobs, doesn’t she?”
Julia Louis Dreyfus is killing me with the Jane Eyre hair.
A little too much orange on Padma Lakshmi, but a gorgeous dress.
I do like Jena Malone’s dress – some distinctive earrings and better hair would’ve been perfection.
That dress, while nice, is not Martha Plimpton’s style.
Zosia Mamet’s dress is growing on me. While it is over designed, it really suits her.

  • Le_Sigh

I think I love Martha Plimpton for the very reason you state.  I’d totally throw a few back with her and sit around evaluating boys.

  • Lisa Goodwin

Goodwin crack-fashion?   Might need to borrow that.

  • EEKstl

“…her boobs look like a suspension bridge.”  Hilarious!
Maybe my love of acid yellows and greens is clouding my judgement on this one, but I really liked Julie Bowen’s dress and felt it looked kinda great on her.

    • Lilak

Re Bowen’s gown:  (she says in a low whisper) I liked it , too. I was surprised this morning to find it almost universally loathed.

  • Call me Bee

    Thumbs up:
Ginnifer–this was gorgeous on the air.  But she does have a sort of “holier than thou” attitude on the RC.  Leftover from Big Love?
Also–the Annas, Edie F, Jena M, Julia & Julie, Kathy Griffin (brought it!), Martha, Padma & Sarah H, who’s as cute as can be.

Thumbs down:  Glenn (slashed!) Kat D (boobs!) Emilia (ugh.)

Looks that would be thumbs up if the dresses were hemmed correctly:  Alison, Michelle, Cat D and Sufe (who would have looked stunning, but that gorgeous brocade just shouldn’t puddle. It just bunches up badly.)

Zosia is in a catagory all her own.  Like an FU to everyone, that dress is so ugly.

  • Stefano29

TLo! Why can’t you stand Padma Lakshmi?

Same question for the rest of the unborn fawns here. Personally, I find her stunning and classy.

  • Sharon Jessup Joyce

I love Jena Malone’s dress and think the dark red keeps it from looking too Greek Goddess Goes to Hollywood. Worst look in this grouping might go to Michelle Dockery – there’s just nothing good to say about that terrible garment. The style and colour make it look like a bad bridesmaid’s dress. And it looks like a bad alteration job from a size 16 to a size 6 – except she’s a size 2. And – this is very rude of me to say, but Kat Dennings has set herself up for it with that dress – her breasts look very fake in that bodice.

  • Am I the only one that wondered what kind of crazy hat Kathy Griffin was sporting?
Editted to say: just finished reading the other comments and no, I guess I wasn’t the only one!

  • pookiesmom

Michelle Dockery looks like she wants to evaporate into the wall behind her.

  • Cheryl Kohs

Your suspension bridge boob comment was your best ever.

  • neofashionista

I love Anna gunn but “standard” is actually high praise because typically she misses the stylistic mark by a mile
I have irrational hatred for the boobage revealed by kat’s dress she is gorgeous but it is just NOT necessary

  • librarygrrl64

My wins here are Anna Chlumsky and Martha Plimpton.

Who did we see wearing that same Stella McCartney dress that Edie has on, a few months ago?  (Or maybe it was in a different color but the shape was the same).  I’m drawing a blank.

  • Kyle Sarabia

Brooklyn Decker wore Edie’s Stella McCartney gown at the Battleship premiere (and i think someone else did-i’m not sure) and i feel as Brooklyn wore it better.

  • Allison: Overworked with unflattering origami draping and very stiff-looking. Hate the peplum part as well as the Christmas green shade.
    Anna: Nice and delicate.
    Anna G.: Overworked.
    Cat: stiff and contrived
Edie: Pretty good. It’s got edge and bite to it. The belt’s a suitable choice.
Emilia: Not bad. It’s kind of a confection of a dress. Kind of fairy-tale-like. That’s a beautiful buoyant print.
Ms. Goodwin: Hate the match-y-match-y shoes and the slightly tonally different belt. Hate the dress for the most part. Sure, it’s intricate in a vine-like, interlinking way, but it looks as if it’s been made out of non-conventional materials and badly so.
    Glen: Gross. Terribly contrived.
Jena: Gorgeous draping and structure rendered in a delicious color. The best yet.
    Julia: Delicately woven. Nice.
Julie: Unflattering. Don’t like that draped thing at the bottom.
Kat: Beautifully draped and very fluid.
Kathy: Stiff with terribly tortured ruffles at the back.
Martha: It’s got delicateness and attitude and spunk.
Michelle: Yikes! Puckered seams. Yuck. Boob frown. E.W.W.W.
Padma: Among the very best. Very fragile-spun and goddess-like.
Sarah: Very pristine with fluid draping and aptly bejeweled.
Sufe: Passable. Kind of curtain-like, though.
Zosia: One of the worst, if not the worst. Rabbit-ear boobs. Mosquito-net side slits. WFT is this thing? It sure as hell ain’t a dress. This looks designed by someone who has no idea what the female body looks like.

  • ccm800

Wow Padma looks A-Mazing – and I still dun like her either.

  • e jerry powell

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:

  • Did not like the Emily Dickinson hair on Julia Louis-Dreyfus

  • quiltrx

    Overall, mostly not-bad-to-good here.

I would cut any number of bitches for Martha Plimpton’s dress!  Well done, Princess Puffy Sleeves…it reminds me of a gorgeous New Orleans balcony.

  • bitterk

This batch is not quite as successful as the first.  Love the Siriano and Lhuillier gowns but otherwise there’s are too many prom and mermaid dresses.  Glenn Close and JLD  deserve a special shout out for looking absolutely dreadful.  Can someone explain JLD’s hair?   She looks like Half Pint from Little House on the Prairie.

  • bitterk

Love the Siriano and Lhuillier gowns but I could do without all the prom and mermaid dresses.  Glenn Close and JLD deserve special mention for their bizarre choices.  Glenn’s dress hurts my eyes and JLD’s hair???  She looks like Half Pint on Little House on the Prairie.

  • I love Godwin’s dress–that orange is a bold and interesting choice without going ’round the back end of an Eddie Izzard toothpick diagram.

  • Other than Kathy Griffin and Sarah Hyland, nobody’s doing it for me in this bunch.  Bring on the next batch o’ bitches!

  • julnyes

I may be in the minority but I liked Julie Bowen’s gown. When I saw her I thought that I should hate it, but I didn’t.

  • siriuslover

What idiot shot Kat Deeley with an Emmy coming out of her head?

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Kathy Griffin is wearing a little gold hat because of her position in the photo.  I sortof like it though.   And Zosia Mamet?  Besides never having heard of this poor woman, someone needs to really really really address her makeup/style.  My son just cruised through, peered over my shoulder and said “Hey, what’s that guy doing in a dress?”

  • Ok, I don’t even watch Modern Family but I have to disagree with you about Julie Bowen. She usually looks too severe and I really like this color on her and her softer hair. I thought she looked awesome. In the category of ‘shows I actually watch’ I am SO disappointed with Lady Mary. The color is great….and scene.

  • LambeeBaby

There is some unfortunate posing in these shots. Although Kathy Griffin looks great, the Emmy behind her head makes it look like she is wearing a bellmans cap and Zosia Mamet is carrying a roll of paper towels under her right arm.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

christian siriano sure got a lot of work at this event. the best dress he made i still think is christina hendricks’. anna chlumsky’s is also nice. martha plimpton’s is, um, maybecrazy. just like that.

i like anna gunn’s dress a bit better than you do–the color is really good & the collar isnt bad either. again, most of these are forgettable–the only thing i remember besides this is that ginnifer goodwin, offal or not offal, looks much better than she normally does. had you not mentioned the innards i might not have even seen them.

    edited to add:
oh! david mamet’s daughter! one of the worst outfits i’ve ever seen. & i’ve seen a lot of outfits.

  • If any of those Wonder Woman movies ever get made, Edie Falco should play her mother.

  • Sorry, guys. Julia Louis-Dreyfus looks AWFUL. All she needs is a hairnet and I wouldn’t be able to tell her from Ruth Buzzi as a bag lady on “Laugh-In.” Yeah, that’s right. I’m THAT old.

  • Presumptuous Insect

At least two products of nepotism here. Disgusting.
