2012 Creative Arts Emmy Awards Red Carpet

Posted on September 18, 2012

Who’s ready to get their SHMEMMYS on?

Hit it!

Emily Deschanel

From the Mamie Eisenhower Collection at Sears. Jeez, girl. You could have at least tried for some kind of hairstyle with a little more oomph than “Ma Ingalls,” y’know?

Erinn Hayes

Fine. Standard.

Jennette McCurdy

Also fine. Also standard.

Jennifer Morrison in Romona Keveza

The hair’s just a skosh too sloppy for our tastes, but everything else is working great here.

Julia Ormond in David Meister

Love the dress, but she looks like she could’ve used some support. Also, the bag is too big and the shoes look too casual.

Kathie Griffin

Miss Kathy looks great. She’s really figured out the red carpet. Translation: She’s hired someone.

Lake Bell in Andrew Gn

Too much going on in one dress. The effect is kind of heavy.

Lisa Kudrow in Tadashi Shoji

Pretty. Wish she’d worn her hair up or back.

Loretta Devine

That’s an awful lot of boob for the red carpet, but the dress looks pretty great on her.

Malin Akerman in J. Mendel

That’s an awful lot of sternum for the red carpet, but the dress looks pretty great on her.

Margaret Cho

Not a bad dress for her, but too shiny.

Why is everyone sporting giant file-folder clutches? Is there a lot of paperwork involved?

Mary Murphy

Honey, no.

Maya Rudolph in Dolce&Gabbana

Megan Mullaly

We can get behind the glasses on the RC, but we can’t get behind that drab-looking dress.

Melissa McCarthy

Once again, we simply don’t understand the choices she and her dressmaker are making. That bodice is just plain odd and only serves to make her look bigger. The fabric’s pretty, though.

Miranda Cosgrove in Collette Dinnigan

Morena Baccarin in Basil Soda

Padma Lakshmi in Zuhair Murad

Also gorgeous, but her boobs are mad at her right now.

Maybe it’s just me, but I rather like Emily Deschanel’s ensemble. She, like her sis, has a retro thing working for her.

    • BerlinerNYC

It’s not just you. I thought it was funky, flattering, and eye-catching. Unlike her sister, who always seems to be rocking that one look/character, Emily is versatile. Temperance Brennan wouldn’t wear this, which is why it’s smart of her to wear it and remind everyone that she’s not Bones.

      • n a

i liked it too- thought it worked for her- a little quirky & retro/funky. still polished tho-

    •  I thought the cuteness of the shoes gave some levity to the rest of the outfit.

    • pattyw

I find Emily so beautiful but that never seems to translate on the red carpet.

    • MilaXX

I get that they like retro, but they never look chic in their looks.

    • I don’t like it…I love it! I would even love it more if the skirt part was more of a midi then hitting at some weird length near her ankles.

  • Megan Mullaly’s dress is Princess Lea chic. If only she’d bageled her hair.

    •  I love “bagel” as a verb.

    • n a

what a tragedy- she needs to hire her Gilmore Girls lady b/c she always looked so cute on that show- never dumpy/frumpy- and always stylish.  That whole get up just makes her look way older than she is too! boo! no reason she can’t look fab.

  • marahe

I believe Kathy G’s stylist is Robert Verdi. At least that’s what she said on her talk show when he was a guest.

    • mbelchic

He needs to fix the hair-

      • n a

totally agree- i really love her and i think hair is an issue for her in general.  i wonder if she doesn’t have to wear it a certain way to cover the plastic surgery?  but i just wish she would soften it up a bit.

        • mbelchic

The surgery ain’t the problem-Straight bangs and curly hair went out YEARS ago, and I’m from the South, so I know-You can hide scars many ways-

          • n a

lmao! yes- you are ttly right- kinda 80s??

  • Morena Baccarin is killing it. God, I can’t wait for Homeland to start.

    • muzan-e

      Showtime posted a twenty-minute preview.
And now the wait is killing me twice as much.

(On a more fashiony note: finally loving her hair again!)

      • call_me_schmeg

yes to your fashiony note! it had been her hair recently that was killing me.

      • I know! I’m trying to do the whole delayed-satisfaction thing and avoid the preview, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to hold out much longer.
And I also think her hair looks great!

    • Lisa_Cop

Yes, gorgeous. And I love Malin Ackerman in J. Mendel. But that’s it. The rest are meh to bad.

  • i think hayes deserves some more praise here. that dress is sharp!

    • yes (whoever she is), the dress is killa. Wish she’d amped up the hair.

  • Sobaika

Morena wins, although a good show from Padma.

  • Morena Baccarin looks beautiful. I also think that Margaret Cho looks wonderful (despite the shiny dress).

  • SapphoPoet

Why is everyone sporting giant file-folder clutches? Is there a lot of paperwork involved?”

  • lilibetp

Day-um Padma!  My boobs didn’t get that squished during my last mammogram!

  • janetjb

Love the cut of Margaret Cho’s dress, but not that fabric.

    • Normally I am not a fan of satin (silk charmeuse? hard to tell), but this suits her. She looks great!

    • Lisa_Cop

Her huge tatoo throws me so much, I can’t even focus on the dress.

      • Her tattoo work is gorgeous – what tattoos SHOULD look like. If you’re going to commit, do it right.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Ouch.  These are some seriously beautiful women wearing some SERIOUSLY HORRIBLE dresses!

    • AudreysMom

and is it me, or are about 5 of them variations on the same dress?

  • jdoublep18

I just can’t get behind Loretta Devine’s dress…spaghetti straps and a low-v are one of the fastest ways for we of the non-perky variety to look saggy and heavier than we are.

Why has Melissa McCarthy not jumped on the Tadashi Shoji bandwagon?

    • meowing

Oops, just answered Shoji, upthread–hadn’t scrolled down to see you beat me to it!

    • Also, tiny, little spaghetti straps and large breasts are a recipe for red carpet disaster.

    • sisterb67

Both of them need to get on the Shoji bandwagon.  The other name that pops into my head all the time when it comes to the fuller figured women, because I own a few of his pieces (purchased at the Saks outlet, because I could NEVER afford them otherwise), is Carmen Marc Valvo -his dresses usually look fantastic on a LOT of different body types, and even has a plus line. I can’t imagine he couldn’t make Loretta and Melissa look fabulous.

  • 3boysful

Padma looks ridiculous–that dress is at least one size too small.  It would’ve been great had it actually fit her.

    • EveEve

      Mary Murphy as Mae West.

  • Becky Downs

Maya’s looks sort of like what Gunnar designed on PR for Lord and Taylor week.  Only not as sparkly.

    • Laughingworld

      Maya’s isn’t all that different from Cosgrove’s.

  • SewingSiren

I like Ma Ingalls hair and I don’t care who knows it.
But I can not get behind the Ma Ingalls apron that Melissa McCarthy is wearing . She looks like the cook at the Kountry Kitchen Roadhouse cafe.

    • MaryMitch

I think if the center pieces of the bodice (the “aprony” parts) had gone all the way to the shoulders, and if the waist hadn’t sagged on the sides, it would have been a lot better. She should find a stylist and a designer that understands large women.

      • meowing

Two words (rather, one name):  Tadashi Shoji.  Introduce Tadashi to Loretta Devine, too.  Who, who, who is the actress (from last spring?) who Soji dressed, with 100% improvement?

        •  Octavia Spencer!

          • meowing

            Yes, O. Spencer!  Thanks.

        • shirab

           Octavia Spencer?

          • MilaXX

Yes. She made it through most of awards season with Tadashi and David Meister, both of whom know how to dress a fuller figure.

  • yay, miss kathy! she looks chic and modern and her figure looks gewd! and jennifer morrison is kill-in-it.

  • Morena for the win. Man oh man was are most of these women closet members of Bland Nation?

  • Call me Bee

I think Emily was going for that Mamie Eisenhower look, so…she did it!  I think it’s cute!
    Kathie Griffin always brings it!
Margaret Cho looks pretty good.  (And I say that despite my hate of a thousand suns…)
Mary Murphy–sheesh what a train wreck she is.  Why does no one talk about her obvious drug problem?  Slurred speech and half-moon eyes while on camera!  She and Paula Abdul can sit in the corner together and swap pain-killer stories, I bet.
There’s a tie for the evening’s “That’s Not Your Dress” award between Megan Mullaly, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy.

Thanks so much for the pics of Padma Lashki and Morena Baccarin.  Both beauitful women and they are stunning here.  Le sigh…

  • e jerry powell

“Miss Kathy looks great. She’s really figured out the red carpet. Translation: She’s hired someone.”

    Um, DUH.

And she has the cute fake hair in.

  • pattyw

I swear I just read somewhere that Melissa is designing a line of plus-sized clothing. This does not bode well. As for the apron, perhaps a nod to her Gilmore Girls days as Sookie St. James? I miss Sookie, who always managed to look better in chef’s garb, a bandana and pigtails than Melissa ever does on the RC.

    • She said something about designing a plus size line earlier this year (last awards season).  I agree:  does not bode well.  And why, for crying out loud, does she have PUFFED sleeves on the shoulder?  She is so lovely and funny and it kills me how awful she looks on the RC.  KILLS ME.

      • As a plus-sized gal, I’m saying HELL NO to a Melissa designed collection. I love her, I think she’s hilarious, but she had no idea how to dress her own body, much less mine!

        • MilaXX

THIS! As I mentioned in my post earlier she always looks like she’s hiding in her clothes. I get that some plus sized gals don’t want to show their arms, but puffy sleeves and high necklines make you look fatter. She needs a cleaner sleeve, and she needs to open up the neck area a bit more. Not Christina Hendrick level of cleavage, but just a bit more open. Also she could stand to explore some ruching/wrap or faux wrap options.  I agree a Melissa designed  collection is just train wreck waiting to happen.

    • Tatiana Luján

I rewatched the series about a month ago and she looked so cute and so well dressed in that show. It’s sad that she didn’t learn a thing.

  • Judy_J

Why in the world would Padma want to squeeze her chest into a bodice that small?  The rest of the dress seems to fit properly….and what’s with the no-makeup face?

    • MilaXX

I’m assuming she wanted that look. Billy B did her makeup & considering the man has worked with Gaga, I’m sure he knows how to work with color.

  • These ladies are all lovely but they all need to invest in some better freakin’ bras and shape-wear.

    • Lisa_Cop

And most need to work on their posture.

  • ojosazules

Aside from the belt, I’m sorta digging Ma Ingalls. Scary Ma.
Too bad about Padma’s unhappy bosoms, that’s a great dress on her otherwise.

  • Cathy S

Padma’s dress is gorgeous, but yeah, her breasts must be pretty furious at her right now.

  • Melissa McCarthy should just call the lady who designs for igigi and hire her to make dresses for her.  I realize it isn’t cool to buy not designer stuff, but they have some gorgeous things on that site already.  That dress is going to give this plus sized girl nightmares.

    • Agreed.  That dress is tragic.  As mentioned elsewhere, she needs to get on the Tadashi Shoji/David Meister bandwagon.

    • MilaXX

IIRC last season she did wear something from Igigi. Did I read somewhere she fancies herself designer, or does she just prefer to have her dresses made. Either way she still needs a stylist to consult with so she can get a better total look.

  • Le_Sigh

Morena’s hair no longer looks like Tootsie’s!  I am rejoicing!

  • MilaXX

Kathy Griffin – looks great but I don’t really like the colors on her.
Lisa Kudrow – I’m going to have to google this collection. It looks good on everyone so far
Loretta Divine – Love her, but gurl, spaghetti straps are not for a body that size. It looks disproportionate & the girls need support.
Margaret Cho – I’m not a fan of satin, but honestly, this is one of her better looks.
Mary Murphy – Honey no one over a size 2 can wear a lace mermaid dress with out looking like either Mae West or Ms. Kitty.
Megan Mullaly – I kinda dig the glasses on the RC.  There are many days I don’t feel like doing the daily eye poke
Melissa McCarthy – I love her, and I can imagine that it’s hard to be plus size in Hollywood, but honestly I think she hides in her clothes.  This is not flattering at all.

  • afabulous50

Not sure I like any look on this RC…

  • Girl_With_a_Pearl

Mary Murphy is trying to get in touch with her inner Mae West.

  • joancarol

Melissa McCarthy looks like Mrs. Claus in the workroom.

    • meowing

Oh, yes, from the Rudolph cartoon version!

  • Since the creative Emmys aren’t as high-profile, perhaps there is less lending of dresses, so these ladies were making do with things from their own closet (ie, the random sandals that Julia Ormond is wearing). Also, most of these women are ‘real’ working actresses rather than ‘celebrities,’ so perhaps are less invested in constructing a brand for themselves.

  • M_E_S

All my Firefly girls are looking great these days!  Now we just need a red carpet event for Jewel Staite and Summer Glau so we can see how they’re styling themselves these days…

  • LondonMarriott

It took me a moment to realize that Mary Murphy is not wearing a red bra and panties under a nude dress, but that’s the reflection of the red carpet.  Jeebus.

  • kschwarting

Holy Mary (Murphy, that is), Mother of G_d, why did you pick that dress?  My personal favorite is Kathy Griffin’s dress–she looks late-summery and I love the colors.

  • Pants_are_a_must

A spoonful of bleh. Just like the Shmemmys always deliver.

  • nannypoo

Kathie Griffin’s hair is so bad I just can’t get past it to form a positive opinion about her dress. Also looking bad as usual is Emily Deschanel, a beautiful woman who dresses like a frump every chance she gets.

  • DCSheehan

Kathy Griffin, keep this stylist!  Best you’ve looked in years!  Margaret Cho also looks good, yes a bit shiny but she’s never looked more put together.  As for Loretta, that’s a whole lotta boob but she’s got em and it’s not looking vulgar, just ample, and there ain’t nothing wrong with ample!

    • sisterb67

As a gal of ample boobage myself, I’m all about sharing the ample. But Loretta’s ladypillows are looking very sad – too much underboob going on, she needs a strapless longline bra under that dress to perk them up!

  • Fun Fact: I love those file folder/envelope clutches.

  • It hurts to look at Padma

  • elemspbee

Megan M–great hair. Lorena B–great hair, face, dress. Goddess!

  • butterflysunita

I really like the Tadashi Shoji dress Lisa Kudrow is wearing.  The more I see of TS’s designs, the more I like.

    • Tatiana Luján

I love the dress. She looks as if she had taken a too long nap and had woken up with just enough time to dress in the car.

  • I love Margaret Cho’s look. I think the shiny plays well with the retro feel. Morena made me gasp. Melissa made me cry. Mary Murphy made me laugh until I ruined my makeup.

  • Shelley H

Digging the victory rolls on the woman behind Loretta Devine! I also like Emily D’s dress, but not her hair.

  • Tatiana Luján

I actually liked Megan Mullaly’s look, she looked fresh. There is something very weird happening in Margaret Cho’s face, it looks as if she were a japanese porcelain doll, but not in a good way. Ugly makeup.

  • Morena Baccarin is definitely my favorite. She looks beautiful!

And what in God’s name is Mary Murphy wearing? As an aside, Mary Murphy has the singular most irritating voice I’ve ever heard from a TV personality.

ETA: I like Emily Deschanel’s whole look, too.

  • I’m not too crazy about any of the looks here, really.

And Loretta Devine – honey, take it from a fellow big-busted sister.  Those spaghetti straps are *begging* for mercy!

  • Morena is so beautiful.   Can’t say I’m thrilled about the hair, though.

  • mbelchic

I am soooooo sick of the curly bang, straighter hair thing Griffen always has going on-Sick of it-

  • Melissa McCarthy’s dress makes her look like a pilgrim.

  • was it really hot/windy that day?? everyone looks damp with sweat and hair quite askew…

  • understateddiva

I’m wanting to point at Megan Mullaly and ask her, “what’s going on here? What’s happening?”

  • formerlyAnon

Deschanel is coming closer than she deserves to pulling that off. But I think it’s a miss.

I think you guys were *very* kind to a number of celebs, presumably because of the dangers of being photographed in broad daylight wearing evening wear designed for restrained artificial light.Thank-you Megan Mullaly. I now have a Polyphonic Spree earworm.

  • PhillipWilde

Melissa McCarthy looks like they took a printed dress from a smaller woman, split the seams, and pulled it on over a solid burgundy dress.  Just the worst thing they could do for a beautiful, full-figured woman.

  • Mad props to the number of curvy ladies represented here. Real bodies for the win!

  • moja31

The most frightening thing about Melissa McCarthy’s dress, is that she has spoken in the past about plans to design clothes for plus sized women. Just no.

    • What I don’t get is that for a while she was knocking it out of the park, so what the hell happened?

  • mozzer0906

ack.  Melissa McCarthy and her stylist seem to have no clue how to dress a big woman.  It is sad.

  • Lilak

Gah . . . what IS this stuff?!?   Scrolling down, it was one “ew” or “why?” or “nah” after another.  Maybe I should blame Brenda Strong; it’s possible her winning look completely spoiled me.

  • Megan Mullaly in: “Secretaries from Spaaaace!”

  • But let’s talk about the boys… did anyone else get a look at that hot mess Jeremy Davies???

  • i didn’t know that megan mullaly had joined a cult.  melissa mccarthy is just back from a long hot day selling beer at the ren faire.  padma’s boobs are so mad at her they’re about to punch her in the face!  and speaking of boobs, lake bell’s are about to be eaten by that thing crawling up the front of her dress.  look out, lake!

  • morena <3<3<3<3<3<3

  • Kathy looks as chic as she ever well. Melissa is trying to be slimming with perhaps her quilt-making grandma coming up with the silhouettes?

  • SophieCollier

Good lord, some sad looks.  Julia needs to stop slouching.  That would help a lot.  Loretta’s straps are making me nervous.

  • AZU403

Who decreed that strapless gowns should be worn without a necklace? It doesn’t have to be gigantic jewels that detract from the bodice, but it just looks unfinished to me, as if the lady went out of the house without her shoes.

  • SaoirseLee

I dunno, sort of liking Megan Mullally’s Hipster Bride of Frankenstein get-up.

  • I love the color on Loretta, but yeah, giant boobs and tiny spaghetti straps don’t mix.  I think she needs a gown that is more scructured and supportive.

  • ccm800

That is overall one awful red carpet – Oddly enough  – And no one is going to agree with me…I call crazy ass Cho as the winner. PS Kathy nees to work chuck this wig – every time it makes an appearance I think “Crazy bangs”

  • I feel like Padma Lakshmi’s navel is looking at me.
