Zooey Deschanel in Brentwood

Posted on August 09, 2012

We consider it a huge step forward for her that she’s not wearing tights in any of these pictures. Attagirl, Zooey.

Zoey Deschanel out and about in Brentwood, California in a navy dress paired with a Tulle green double-breasted jacket, Jimmy Choo shoes and a Prada bag.

Tulle Jacket

Jimmy Choo ‘Moore’ Pump

Prada Saffiano Framed Top Handle Bag

It’s all so very Zooey Deschanel, isn’t it? We love everything she’s sporting here and salute her commitment and consistency regarding her personal style. But is it us, or do her clothes tend to run a size larger than they need to be?

Love the flats.

Maybe she’s not a form-fitting kind of girl, or he weight fluctuates or something. She looks really cute.

    • TheOriginalLulu

True, some of us retain water more than others.
I like the dress better without the jacket. She does look very cute.

    • HengRu

Also, if she buys vintage, she might have to settle for an approximate fit instead of an exact fit, given that one-of-a-kind pieces don’t come in a range of sizes as recently manufactured ones do.

  • She looks great, in a very, “real girl” kinda way.  And I love that she doesn’t go the route of overly boobed and legged. Sure, that dress could be a skosh tighter cut through the middle. But I suspect Zooey is more interested in being comfortable.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Yeah, she’s definitely not into the slut-tastic clothing we see on other starlets. If anything, I often wish she would dress a little more polished, she’s such a pretty girl. But then, like you said, she’s got that “real girl” thing going on and it’s part of her charm. She’s kind of adorable.

      •  I love it that she seems so approachable and grounded.  As though she finds all the hype and furor, rather silly.

    • BerlinerNYC

Well, of course we already heard her sing about “the cut, the feel of cotton…” 😉
But yes, girl looks great, and not like the caricature of herself she often does. And can we talk about how cute those SHOES are? If I were a girl, I would be stampeding to the store to find something that wasn’t a HEEL or a tired ballet flat or a clichéd kitten heel. That’s the takeaway element of the look for me.

  • Kyle Crawford

I swear to you my mother wore this exact same dress to church on Easter Sunday, 1972.

    • Sobaika

Your mother must have a good sense of style 🙂

    • Sweetbetty

My mother might have carried that same purse on Easter Sunday, 1952.  It just looks old-fashioned and dull to me.

      • My mother could beat up your mother for that purse. And I’d snatch it away from both of them in a heartbeat.

  • EEKstl

Adorable.  I’m not one for flats but love the shoes.

    • Judy_S

Those are not flats, they are heels. I am enchanted to see someone wearing comfortable-looking but also dressy-looking shoes. She looks like a real person.

      • AthenaJ

The shoes are an interesting combination of a flat with a low block heel. They seem much more practical for running around on the streets than 5 inch platform pumps, that’s for sure.

      • makeityourself

Thank you Judy S.  They are not flats.  To all you young’uns who haven’t seen shoes like this before, they are called low- or mid-heeled, squared-toe pumps.  I’ve tried this pair on.  The heels are shiny gold and very fun.  But one must be cautious in one’s styling, as they can skew matronly very easily.   Zoe gets it just right.

  • GillianHolroyd

    Very cute dress.

  • Lisa Kramp

    Flats and Purse….want, Want, WANT!

  • FlamingJune1967

I don’t think her dress is a size too large.  I think we have just gotten used to seeing celebrities wearing a size too small.

    • Lori

I agree that the dress isn’t actually a whole size too large, however the top could have used a little tailoring. Almost no one is a perfect size whatever. Unlike most of us, she has the resources to easily correct problems with off the rack fit.

    • fursa_saida

I completely agree. It looks like there’s room in it for her to sit down. What a concept.

  • Cute everything! I’d wear it all (albeit probably styling each piece differently – I’m not quite as twee as Ms. Deschanel here).

  • Michee Rose

I think the dress fits just fine; I think we’re too used to celebrities being in overly-fitted clothing. Clothing you can barely move in, much less go about a normal day. I think she looks adorably perfect!

  • olsonam

She likes the tailored look and that’s uncomfortable unless you go up a size.

  • Yes, it’s all very predictably Zooey though.  But cute, and well-executed.

  • tereliz

It looks vintage and like it needs some more darting in the bodice to fit her. Cute, though. Glad she’s foregone the tights.

  • Annie Leung

Hey! I remember seeing that dress on Modcloth awhile ago, I think it’s by Dear Creatures. She looks adorable!

    • AthenaJ

Love Modcloth! I’m waiting till I get down a size and then I’m going on a dress shopping spree 🙂

  • Scarlet39

    It suits her very well.

  • I love rick rack. Always have, always will.

  • MilaXX

Yeah it looks like stuff could be a bit more tailored. She looks good and yet still Zooey.

  • Judy_J

Yay, Zooey! Love the dress and the flats.  She looks perfectly put together, and I like that she’s a bit dressed up for running errands.

  • Ugh like an anthropologie manikin. Also I would never wear black flats with a dark blue dress, but that’s just me I think.

  • MK03

Whenever I look at her, I hear Joan: “You want to be taken seriously? Stop dressing like a little girl.”

    •  I can’t stand this style. Affected innocence nostalgia that is always only vaguely masking the most smug of personalities.

  • God help me, I think I even like that rick-rack collar detail. And I haven’t said that about rick-rack since I was, oh, 5 or so.

Such a cute outfit. I covet all of it, but I’m especially lusting after the bag.

  • newtonGOTbeaned

How is she not shvitzing in that adorable outfit?  It’s gotten so hot here that I can’t wear anything I don’t want to be completely drenched in sweat. Gross, I know.

  • Meghan Gentile

i think it’s appropriate that she’s at an osteoporosis treatment center, judging by her insistence to dress like my Nana

  • That’s a much better lipstick shade on her than what she usually goes for.

  • Holy shit, that bag costs more than my CAR. (Granted, I have an 11 year old Jetta, but still. The Jetta drives me places and sports a snazzy Chicks Dig Timelords bumper sticker. Can that bag do that? I think not.)

    • holdmewhileimnaked

ack, it’s only three thousand bucks [laughing]. crazyspouse [spouse 3, currently very unwell due largely to past Hair Metal indulgences] once brought home an hermès birkin. it was several years ago, he brought it cos he knew i had a vintage shop & thought i could sell it. i kept asking him is it hot? & telling him, you know, i cannot sell it if it’s hot. he kept insisting it wasnt–this went on for awhile. of course it was a fell off a truck birkin. i had no doubt.

if i remember correctly it took him many weeks to fess. but he eventually told me i could sell it but not as new & i could not, by any means, mention any serial numbers. i was very glad when it finally left the premises. took awhile.

it wasnt one of the best–no croc, no ostrich, no whatever [i’m not big on birkins]–it was, if i remember correctly, in the $18,000 range & -not- the $80,000 range. i still couldnt sell it & i didnt wanna pay the $1500 he was supposed to pay for it. i kept trying to force him to, for heavens sake, take it back before he spilled pepsi cola all over it. it took him weeks to take it back. & he was not exactly careful w/ the soft drinks. nor was he w/ the dog [in whose teeth i once found w/ a pair of betsey johnson rhinestone springolators]. he had a pair of, dont ask me, arena speakers. actually, he had three. not quite arena, maybe, come to think of it? not the forum–but not the whiskey either. maybe hollywood palladium. no–bigger. anyway. anyway, i stuck that birkin on top of one of those speakers & made it stay there for the several weeks until he returned something he surely couldnt afford & i surely did not want. madness–Hair madness. ah well, he’s got a defibrillator now.

anyway, there’s purse prices for you. look up balenciaga bags too. i can tell you a long story involving him, stolen rent money & one of those stupid purses but i think i am too beat.

      • alyce1213

Fabulous story, totally cray – but I am confounded.  I realise you’re beat, but when you rally, please – what are Hair Metal indulgences??

They took it back with Pepsi spilled on it??

        • holdmewhileimnaked

i put it up before he spilled it.

Hair Metal indulgences=well, when yr fairly famous it’s pretty much mostly coke [at least in this case]. when you’ve run through all yr hundreds of thousands of millions of dollars [or whatever], it turns into coke’s dirtier–& unspeakable–cousin. at some point i’m sure it would turn into bath salts these days–that’s when yr living in some old fan’s closet cos you have nothing left & if you ever do get anything it goes right up yr nose.

oy vey, now i am even beater.

back to throwing boxes around & moving furniture.

          •  I don’t even want to know what an $80,000 handbag looks like. I might throw up, violently.

You WIN at the crazy handbag story though. That’s all kind of crazyawesomeweirdness.

          • formerlyAnon

As always, I enjoy your observations & reminiscences.

Hope you are throwing boxes & moving furniture because you feel a good deal better – not just because you think you have to, however puny you are feeling.

      • BrooklynBomber

Hilarious. I look forward the Balenciaga Saga.

  • Love that Prada bag since January Jones was carrying it a while back.  This is all very Zooey.  I think it’s a size too large as well.  I’m not sure I’m in love with the grandma shoe.

  • This is all somehow too old and too young at the same time.  A proper fitting would go a long way towards fixing both.

  • Imasewsure

I think she wears everything a size too big to complete the little girl look (which I personally wish she would grow out of)…

    • LesYeuxHiboux

They dress her well on her show, cute and quirky but not infantile. I wish she’d take notes.

  • those aren’t flats! They’re just not the hooker heels that seem to be popular lately

  • Amanda in Austin

I want that bag!!  And, yes, Zooey wears her clothes too large. Probably for the same reason she wears tights. It’s like a security blanket.

  • Pennymac

I normally love the color combo of navy blue and lime green. I think this looks a lot better without the jacket, though. And I haven’t seen an appropriate deployment of rick-rack in a while. Its adorable!

  • Little_Olive

Cute, but hate the shoes. Too office/matronly for my taste.

    • Tatiana Luján

Same here. My grandmother uses shoes like those and she always has.

  • Her outfits are very narrow, style wise. I think most people have a lot more variety in the styles of clothing they are attracted to.

  • S_Swift

I think the shoes would have been cuter, maybe, as flats. Something about that heel just isn’t doing it for me.

  • Susan Crawford

Those Jimmy Choos are going on my Must-Have List! And I’m gradually coming around to the Saffiano bag.

The ensemble seems poorly fitted – a size or two too large, maybe? I like the dress, though. It’s classic Zooey-cute, but it is a nice summer frock. And no tights for once is truly positive! Hope she enjoyed the breeze!

  • janetjb

I like the green and navy together, but the dress looks more comfortable without the jacket.

  • Tatiana Luján

She should work for Modcloth, she looks as if she buyed all her clothes there. Love the bag.

  • SpcilK

    Super Cute!

  • AthenaJ

I like the dress, but the collar is pushing it way too far into twee-land. Also like her choice of colors, the blue-green-yellow really looks good together.
I wonder if the reason she wears tights so much is because she has such fair skin. I remember a friend from high school had super pale skin with dark hair, and she was very self-conscious of her legs because no matter how well she shaved, you could still see the dark roots of the hair under her skin. Though I daresay, if that’s the case then I’m sure Zoe could afford laser hair removal… Anyways, that’s my speculating for the day!

  • Nice outfit but she looks a bit rumpled.

  • … except they’re grandma shoes. Please tell me those are going to be a ‘thing’.

  • marilyn

Waving the big yellow purse is a distraction.  She had a nice navy/green thing going on, and threw the big yellow box into the middle of it.  She looks very Pasadena/churchlady here.   With an unmatched purse.

  • SewingSiren

Looks like the cotton queen is having a sad.

  • miagain

hee hee… your flats are my heels!

  • Love the shoes and LOVE that jacket.

  • lchopalong

I had a roommate that was obsessed with Zooey Deschanel. She wanted to be like her in every way, except as an on and off again vegan.

I grew to seriously dislike that roommate, a feeling that stretched itself to my feelings toward Miss Zooey. She just comes off as sticky, fake sugar sweet to me now. I like her personal style even if she annoys the crap of me. I watched her sitcom for a bit, and I felt that the male characters/actors were much more interesting and well done. She’s just the stereotypical manic pixie dream girl. Again.

  • Judih1

Nothing interesting here, she should have been on the whiteboard. BORING

  • I had a dress very much like that that I utterly adored and I was heartbroken when I outgrew it. Fourth grade if I recall. I dunno, I grow weary of women dressing like gradeschool children. The Zooey is a major offender.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I was totally prepared to declare her cute, if disheveled, until I saw that she stole Shirley Temple’s dress. No one messes with my girl Shirley.

Still, it’s a cute jacket and great bag for her. She looks comfortably cute.

  • The dress is by Dear Creatures. I have the same dress, and it tends to run a little large in the waist.

  • Alyson Epstein

  • nancy

She looks cute, it’s so nice to see a celeb looking like she’s not struggling to draw breath in too-tight clothes. I want the shoes & the bag!

  • KaileeM

I’d wear Zooey’s tights in this horrible, oppressive heat to get my hands on that bag!

  • ccm800

Someone needs to hook her up with Kenley.

  • formerlyAnon

I think she looks cuter here than average. I even like the purse.

But that first, unflattering photo of her exiting the car, leading with the purse, (perhaps for benefit of photographers?), flashed me forward to a vision of the post-menopausal 59-yr-old Zoe, still wearing the same kinda clothes and the same hair style, with a few more pounds around the hips.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I have to hate this. It’s Zooey Deschanel.

How sad that this is what it came to.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Love that dress!  She looks so much better than usual, just running around town.

  • How is it that she looks better out running errands than she usually does on the red carpet? I love everything about this look. Now I have to figure out who I have to $%#@ so that I can get that purse.

  • Maybe she likes to breathe in her off time.

  • frannyprof

Love the bag. HATE the shoes. Talk about the smell of nursing home pee…

    • sashaychante

You said it about those shoes…UGLY, old lady shoes…YIKES!

  • Le_Sigh

I always get the “look Mommy!  I’m dressed in your clothes!” vibe when I see her.  Even if she manages to get the fit right.

    Love the bag!

  • She looks like a young Debra Winger to me and I think of her every time I see her

  • pugluv

Those flats are fabulous and I love kelly green and navy paired together.

  • quiltrx

Very cute!  I have a feeling the bodice would be a bit tight if she went down a size, guys.  And who wants to hold their breath while running around town?

  • Maybe the dresses look a size larger because she’s in real vintage that she doesn’t want to alter?

  • Thathoodwink

Maybe she is Alternate Universe Heidi Klum, constantly wearing her clothing one size too big.

  • Truly_Outrageous

Awww I really like her outfit here. I like a good blue and green mix. The dress does look a smidge bit too big on her but she probably likes to rock a loose fit once in a while. Either that or the tailor wasnt in town this week.

  • PeaceBang

  • Good for her with that girlish dress, however it will self-destruct as a wearable style in three years when she hits 35.  The bag however will be good till she’s 70

  • She looks awesome here. I love the shoes, the bag, the dress – very put together but like you guys said, true to her style.

  • HobbitGirl

I would wear all of that.

A quibble, though: it’s the dress that’s double-breasted, not the jacket, from what I can tell. The jacket looks like a fairly standard 60s-style swing jacket.

  • guest2visits

I liked it better with the jacket because I didn’t have to see the dress. It is cute, yes. But it’s so predictable; it’s like a costume.
A bouble breasted sailor suit with giant pan collar, really, ?  And the shoes while comfortable, are little girl Sunday’s best; circa 1960ish.
She wears it well, it looks comfortable. But it looks like pretend wear, also.

  • PinkLemon

Really can’t stand those Prada bags. The shape – it bugs.

  • aristida_girl

    Gods I love that bag!

  • I LOVE that handbag!

  • DesertDweller79

Those aren’t flats.  Those are heels.

I think she looks cute.  I like the green jacket a lot.

  • TieDye64

    That dress is adorable.
