Selena Gomez for Teen Vogue

Posted on August 01, 2012

Selena is serving up late-’60s Ronstadt realness; a reference bound to go over the heads of any Teen Vogue readers.

Selena wears an American Eagle Outfitters shirt, $40. Jill Stuart bralet, $248. Gucci necklace. Pandora gold rings. Selena’s own silver ring. Giles & Brother bracelet, $95.

Selena Gomez covers the September 2012 issue of Teen Vogue magazine photographed by Boo George.

“It’s really fun. I’m lucky. I’m 20. I don’t take anything in my personal life too seriously. I have great friends and a solid group of people I love. I feel like everything else will come organically.”

“Being part of the Disney Channel was such a blessing, and I’m super happy with what my show accomplished, but acting is something I would like to take on more seriously. I don’t necessarily feel accomplished. I want to create a whole different persona when it comes to acting.”

“I’ve never been comfortable with saying, ‘Here’s a top that I’m going to sell for $350, and it’s just a T-shirt.’ I get sent things that are really nice, and I’m like, ‘This is cute,’ and I look at the tag and it’s $200. I’m like, Oh my gosh, people probably think I buy it, and I don’t. It’s really weird.”

Tse sweater. Gucci necklace. On right hand, from left: Pamela Love turquoise ring, $380. The 2 Bandits bow ring, $68. Aesa knot ring, $225. On left hand, from left: Pandora band, and turquoise ring, $45. Aesa ring.

A.P.C. cardigan, $415. Haute Hoodie tank, $95. Theyskens’ Theory shorts, $195.

Michael Michael Kors sweater, $80. Jill Stuart bralet, $248. Dream Out Loud by Selena Gomez earrings, $8 per pack. Chance by Ursa Major necklace, $195. On right index finger, from left: Pandora ring, $45. Gucci ring.

And now we can’t get Different Drum out of our heads.  She really could play Linda in a biopic if anyone ever decided to do one.

Cute pictures. Nothing earth-shatteringly stunning or anything, but then again, that’s not usually how Teen Vogue rolls.

She is such a natural beauty, although I did prefer when her hair was slightly darker.

And she probably gets coaching for interviews or something, but she comes across as much more aware than most 20 year-olds in general, let alone 20 year-old famous starlets.

    • Little_Olive

Either she is really smart or the coaching is amazing (although I’ve always thought their true self comes through somehow)… Babydouche does not belong in this picture.

      • Sobaika

Yup, a little bit of the real person often shines through. It’s why I think my Irrational Celebrity Hate List might not be so irrational after all.

      • Spicytomato1

Yes. And I can only hope that “I don’t take anything in my personal life too seriously. I have great friends and a solid group of people I love.” is code for “I’ve kicked Babydouche to the curb once and for all.”

  • call_me_schmeg

she also reminds me of a young marie osmond. that is all.

    • TheOriginalLulu

      Sure, I see it!

  • MoHub

But where is the equivalent of Jerry Brown?

Oh, yeah. I’m old enough to get the reference.

    • janetjb

I don’t know where the next Governor Moonbeam is hiding.
      Cute and age appropriate.

  • annie_wonder

She’s rather likable isn’t she? Still looks about 12 but the outfits are cute and appropriate for Teen Vogue.

    • SassieCassy

Im glad she looks cute and appropriate esp after teen vogues weird photoshop stance.

  • Kiltdntiltd

I’m just thrilled that they actually look like a teenager.  She hasn’t been styled to death, or made to look 35.

    • TheOriginalLulu

True. That fresh-faced glow will be gone 10 years from now. She has plenty of time to look older…when she’s older.

      • Kiltdntiltd

to which nearly all of us here, can attest.

        • TheOriginalLulu

Ain’t it the truth! I don’t think I look bad at all, until I look at old photos from 20 years ago. I sit and stare at them and think, did I really look that young and glowy and didn’t even realize it??
Time. It is very very cruel.

          • Kiltdntiltd

All just part of the great game called life. We get our hours in the sun, and then must step aside for others to grab their time.

          • TheOriginalLulu

Let them have the sun! Nowadays I prefer to be seen under moonlight anyway. :)

          • Kiltdntiltd

Candlelight for this middle aged guy.

  • Jason M. Galloway

My aunt had the poster of Linda Ronstadt wearing that jean shirt above her bed when I was a kid. Actually, I think she STILL has that poster over her bed…  (I have Silver Threads and Golden Needles in my head now)

    • littlemac8

Damn you for making that song jump into my head on rewind.  Where IS Linda, anyway??

  • NCDFan

She really does look like Ronstadt. Wow, that Different Drum song is a blast from the past.

  • Fibercrazed

It’s so refreshing to see a young woman LOOK like a teen (or 20 yo) and not an overdone, sexualized object.

    • AudreysMom

yes, very true. But unlike Hailee Steinfeld (who yes is a few years younger) Selena isn’t consistent. We’ve definitely seen her trashy and hooker-worthy.

      • ASK26

But a little of that is not uncommon for teen girls – IF they don’t go soo far and too often

  • Katie Wolf

That cardi/shorts combo is adorable! And I really like the pic; very natural, very realistic, very autumn beach.

    • Spicytomato1

I know, that’s my favorite look, too. The cardi is straight from The Preppy Handbook, original 80s edition, but they way it’s styled is so fresh and fun and pretty.

  • Judy_J

I’m glad to see the clothes are age appropriate for teens.  She’s 20?  Looks more like 13 if you ask me.  She’ll be grateful for that one day.

    • Amelia Logan

I keep telling myself that too. I’m 24, I get carded all the tim, and recently someone told me they thought I was 17.

There are lots of ladies with nice skin in my family.

      • newleaf1

You’re a lucky girl.  Enjoy it, and keep wearing the sunscreen….

      • LesYeuxHiboux

27 and still mistaken for a teen, here. I used to think it was the cheeks but now I think it’s just ‘cuz I’m immature.

  • alyce1213

Very sweet and pretty.  Oh gosh, I covet that thick hair.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Me too! She has gorgeous hair. Bless.

  • RebeccaKW

Now I want to listen to some Ronstadt.

I’ve never really had an opinion about her, but she is cute.  I like that at least she is aware at how ridiculously priced some clothing is.

    • Spicytomato1

Yes, she’s aware of the high price of designer t-shirts but the cynical side of me thinks it’s a bit disingenuous to say she doesn’t pay that much for her clothes when we all know she could probably afford to buy us all 10 times over.

      • RebeccaKW

I always find irony in that the people who can afford to buy designer clothes and accessories (for the most part, celebrities), are the ones who get free bags and shoes, etc.

        • Spicytomato1

I know. And you hear about celebs scrambling to pick up free swag at promotional events. Oh, the irony.

          • formerlyAnon

Human nature. Never far from the surface!

  • Kayceed

Yes! Now howzabout a satin baseball jacket and some roller skates?

    • TheOriginalLulu

I had a blue satin baseball jacket with Miss Piggy on the back and “C’est Moi!” underneath her pic. Man, I loved that jacket. LOLOL

  • BarbaraNovak

My 9-year old nephew says she’s the only one prettier than me. 2nd place to this lovely young lady is A-OK by me.  Am so glad I haven’t seen her lady parts, or video of her stumbling home drunk – she seems to be quite the class act.

    • TheOriginalLulu

      Aw how sweet. :)
And thank goodness he’s smitten with a girl like Selena, who doesn’t appear to have an ounce of hoochiness in her.

  • afabulous50

Linda was great – although I wasn’t into the Mexian folk-song period.  I saw her in the early (and I mean early) 80’s.  They had to prop her up at the microphone to sing – but she belted out a great show!

  • Vlasta Bubinka

    Wind swept air brushed
    Retro earthiness bounds when
    will I be loved…

    • meowing

Good reference–can you do a haiku with stone poneys?

  • gabbilevy

She looks sweet and comfortable and normal (except for those too-shorts). Approve.

    • TheOriginalLulu

The too-shorts don’t bother me, because everything that’s supposed to be covered is covered. Besides, this is the time to wear them, while she’s still got the advantage over gravity.

  • uprightcitizen

Kind of funny that she’s commenting about how laughable it is to suggest she might have bought a $350 or $200 t-shirt, and then go right to a photo where she’s wearing a $415 cardigan and a $95 tank top.

    • jimmack

But the 13-year old crowd will scour the mall for a knockoff at Macy’s or American Eagle or countless other mall stores.

      • uprightcitizen

You don’t have to be 13 years old to do that! ; ) But I wonder if the companies who supplied the clothes for the photo shoot would be thrilled to know that the person wearing their items in Teen Vogue was going to be dissing the idea of what they cost. She’s basically saying that even as wealthy as she is, she wouldn’t buy them.

  • marilyn

She is very pretty and natural looking.

  • MarissaLG

That extra bit of hair they plopped on her head is kind of obvious, no? Cute pictures, but I can’t understand trying to sell a $415 sweater to teenagers.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

I gave my teenaged SIL a subscription to Seventeen for the Christmas after she turned 13, shortly after my MIL complained that now she constantly wanted to buy things from the mag. My response: “That’s why I didn’t get her Teen Vogue“. Princess gets what she wants.

  • nannypoo

Very cute and non-slutty. Good job.

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

She’s kept it classy while coming into her own.  I applaud that.  These pictures are great, even if nothing overly exciting.

  • sagecreek

Very cute and she (or whoever wrote her comments) sounds very grounded.

  • BazoDee

She look great -but not like herself.

  • jimmack

But her teen fans, like my niece, will squeal with delight at this issue. Selena is a goddess to 13-year old Claire. They will study each picture and plan a trip to the mall. So far the clothes are not as big a hit as the necklaces in photo three.

I thought I would have to open the wallet for some new clothes but Claire is already distracted by a new text about BIG TIME RUSH. Whew. That was a close one.

  • sockandaphone

i love love LOVE the natural makeup going on here. really pretty. secretly obsessed with this girl, to be honest (i think ive played I Love you Like a Love Song an embarrassing amount of times)

    • PinkLemon

  • MilaXX

Any photoshoot  that doesn’t make the woman look like a hooker and said female is able to have more than one facial expression is a win in my book. She looks cute & I totally see early Linda in her.

  • TheOriginalLulu

    She’s adorable.

  • Tadiana

I drew a great picture of Linda Ronstadt when I was an aspiring teenage artist.  Also, just to age myself a little more, my teenage sons think Selena Gomez is “so hot”.

  • kimmeister

The idea of paying $248 for a bralet makes me want to barf.

  • Kelli

I’d never seen younger picture of Linda Rondstadt before I followed that link.  The resemblance is quite striking.

  • sashaychante

She looks really cute and natural in these pix.  Like a 20 year old girl should.

  • granddelusion

You had to mention Different Drum. There goes my day.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Great sweaters. She’s always been the level-headed one of the current Disney crop, glad to see that hasn’t changed. She is totally rocking the Ronstadt aesthetic here, my dad had all of her records (and played them frequently). Pretty girl and a string of pearls.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Love the shot of her in the A.P.C. cardigan.  What a beautiful young woman.  I like the more natural look, less makeup, let her be her age.  Very nice.

  • Pamela

$415 sweaters-you can’t say Vogue isn’t consistent in their featuring of unaffordable clothing for teens as well as adults.

  • P. Capet

  • mila_8

Sweaters on the beach! That’s crazy.

  • guest2visits

Such a beautiful girl; and these are all nice pics. I think she is adorable in her 415.00 cardigan.
Just so mom and dad can start saving for it now.

  • RzYoung

Wow such an interesting interview that must be, she’s got so much to say for hersel..zzzzz

  • PrunellaV

She is so adorable I’m glad she wasn’t around when I was a teen (the Linda Ronstadt years) — I would have hated myself even more.

  • Modigliani
