Rashida Jones Gets It (Mostly) Right

Posted on August 02, 2012

Rashida, bless her heart, never really figured out how to dress for public appearances. We don’t claim to know Thing One about her true personality, but judging by her many appearances over the years, we think it’s safe to say she’s not particularly comfortable getting all gussied up and put on display.

Which makes this outfit all the sweeter:

Rashida Jones attends the premiere of “Celeste And Jesse Forever” at Sunshine Landmark in New York City in a Thakoon dress.

Thakoon Resort 2013 Collection

Girl, That is absolutely, no-dicking-around, YOUR DRESS. She looks adorable. Sure, the belt’s probably not the best choice and neither are the shoes; plus her lip color strikes us as too red and saturated, but this is one of the very few times we’ve seen her on the RC and didn’t cringe a little. Attagirl.

A perfectly lovely little dress ruined by the accessories.

    • Anathema_Device

Great dress! I think the belt obscures the cool waist detailing and makes the dress bunch up funny. Overall, quite an improvement for her, though.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

After reading your post I looked again, and I wonder if the dress isn’t actually a trifle bigger than it ought to be.  Perhaps the addition of the belt was to mitigate that?

        • Anathema_Device

Perhaps. I do think it (the belt) just makes the dress bunch up more, which isn’t all that flattering. It is obscured a bit by the print, so it isn’t horrible or anything. The original is just so perfect. I want it!!!

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Well, the style is pretty straightforward. It should be easy enough to copy.  And if you needed help with that, you know someone,…..

            • Anathema_Device

Yes! I have so many projects lined up and here I am nitpicking beautiful celebrities’ outfits while I’m still in my jammies! Fortunately for me, this dress will probably trickle down into knock-off land before I need to attempt it. But if I do, I will ask for help!

            • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Lucky dawg, you, to still be jammified at this hour.

            • Anathema_Device

I’ve been staying off the computer more lately, and I think I’m binging today!! Off to kick ass and take names now! :-)

            • Little_Olive

Honey, don’t punish yourself. Procrastination is a fundamental part of productivity in well-balanced individuals, IMO.

        • Violina23

I think it’s the right amount of volume. I don’t mind the shoes so much, I like the black better than brown

    • Bridget Dierks

I like that she is obviously uncomfortable posing on a red carpet.  It makes me like her more, actually.  The dress is great, too!

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I love the dress on her, and I agree that it needs a belt, just not THIS belt. The shoes are a little too heavy and literal, but they don’t bother me. Same goes for the hair and makeup. If we were scoring this, I’d give her a 7.5/10, maybe an 8 since I’m in a good mood.

    • mhleta

Oh, I agree. She looks so great in this!! I won’t allow myself to pick it apart because the overall impression makes me so happy.

    • NC_Meg

I had all the same complaints and praises. I think I just graduated Precious Unborn Fawns/Bitter Kittens school. Good job, Rashida!

      • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I often have a “what would professors T and Lo think of my assessment” moment. 😉

      • Call me Bee

        There’s a school?  Where do I enroll?

        • NC_Meg

You’re already enrolled, precious unborn fawn! To graduate you just have to read daily and get on the same page as the boys. Soon you’ll start judging men’s hems, sighing in frustration every time you see silly putty pumps (except on Cathy Cambridge, she gets a pass), and wishing Marchesa would stop making dresses.

    • Call me Bee

Perfectly cute summer outfit.  I like her from head to toe in this!

    • MilaXX

She looks really cute here. A thinner belt would have been better, but I don’t mind the shoes.

    • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

The neckline looks so much better on the model – for some reason it looks really thick on R and is giving her weird boobs? And the belt isn’t helping? BUT this is the best I’ve seen her look in a while so seal claps all around! She strikes me as somebody who is famous enough to have to go to red carpet events, but isn’t necessarily famous enough to afford/have a stylist, which is why she’s so stunning but repeatedly doesn’t dress for her figure.

      • Anathema_Device

If you look closely, you can see that Jones folded the neckline open, like lapels. Maybe b/c the dress is longer on her, she felt the need to do the “draw attention up to your face” trick? I agree that the original neckline is more interesting.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

She looks adorable.  I love the look. full stop.

    • Larkin21

Absolutely adorable. She looks great in that dress.

    • PinkLemon

the seam right below/on (?) the boobs makes my eye twitch….it looks like it should sit lower, ya know?

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I thought it was a seam as well, till I looked at the print overall.  And there is a distinct horizontal line that repeats.  They just chose to position that line right “there”, so it looks a bit odd.

        • PinkLemon

oh yeah. hm. still bugs. couldn’t it have been an inch lower??

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Course it could have.  But that is part of the difference between pret-a-porter and couture.  In the couture, such considerations are a normal part of the process.

    • Sobaika

She looks like a beautiful tropical fish.

      • megara1028

        A beautiful, rule-breaking moth, even.

        • NC_Meg

I need Leslie to call Ann a PUF one time. Just once. Doesn’t that sound like something she’d say? “Oh, Ann, you precious unborn fawn. So naive. Now let’s crash this city council meeting.”

    • sagecreek

While I don’t love the print, she looks so comfortable and radiant that I just don’t care.  Good choice, girl!

      • suz72350

Radient is a great word to describe her. The belt is unfortunate as are the shoes, but the colors of the dress are right up her alley. And she looks healthy. Thumbs up.

    • AudreysMom

I thought there was some unwritten law that if you have TWO famous celebrity show business parents it was expected that you’d be comfortable and kick ass in the spotlight, like it was part of the DNA or preschool training or something?

(That Rashida isn’t endears her to me all the more :)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZGP56UPWRMB2XP6KM2UNLWZYVU Brady

Anyone read her Times Mag article about her fashion inspirations?: http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/02/workin-9-to-5/?ref=t-magazine

    • librarygrrl64

I agree on the shoes, but she looks cute, and far more comfortable in her skin, in this sort of getup. Good on ya, Rashida! :-)

    • Pants_are_a_must

She might’ve just found her designer in Thakoon; playful enough for her, serious enough for a semi-formal red carpet.

    • http://twitter.com/andreatfisher Andrea Fisher

It surprises me that she’s not more comfortable. Her mother was Peggy Lipton, who had a very successful modeling career for Ford before she starting her acting career.

      • BerlinerNYC

I think that’s part of what makes her so relatable and likeable as Ann Perkins on Community. She was even likeable on The Office when she was dating Jim, which was a pretty much impossible feat, because of course you wanted to hate anyone who wasn’t Pam, but there she was, being witty and likeable, despite her stunning looks.

    • mjude

      she is quite adorable

    • Little_Olive

Why alter the neckline like that?  The original one made more sense and gave the dress more structure. Wide halters are flattering on… wait, they are not flattering.

      But she does look good.

    • TheOriginalLulu

I love the expression “gussied up”. Like “cat’s pajamas” and “out gallavanting”. Stuff your grandma would say.

Anyway, I love the way she looks. The dress is fun and pretty and I’m kind of digging those shoes too.

    • frecklenose

I adore her and this essay she just wrote for the NYT explains so much about her personal style…and now I adore her more http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/02/workin-9-to-5/?hpw

    • quiltrx

This dress is really cute, and the silhouette is very flattering for her.  She needs to remember this day!

    • Dan_In_NYC

      ATTAGIRL!!! :)

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

She looks good.  Not great, but good.  She needs to ditch the shoes and change her hair.

    • greyhoundgirl

One reason that I like her so much is that she’s not comfortable getting all gussied up.  There are enough Gussie’s to go around already!

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/FEP56YB4DUIXBWSLIMSSSGQHWY jimmack

At last, some one is a dress that says “SUMMER”!

    • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

I love everything but the shoes & the lip color.  Adorable!

    • Le_Sigh

Cute!  Finally.  I love that she has a healthy body as well.

    • Vickiefantastico

This dress could go wrong so quickly but it works here. I love it!

    • alyce1213

Really, really nice.  The dress is perfect for her.

    • julnyes

Lovely dress and I think this is definitely one of her better public appearances despite minor quibbles with her accessories. She gets graded on a curve in my book.

    • kimmeister

I don’t mind the belt and shoes, although they’re not perfect.  The biggest issue is the lip color.

    • margaret meyers

Love this dress.  I think she constantly buys her things a size too big.

    • tereliz

LOVE Thakoon! This is such a lovely summer dress, and yes, it is so HER. Maybe I’m grading on a curve, but she looks great.

    • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

adorbs!  she does look a little embarassed to have everyone looking at her.  it’s kind of a self-effacing hairstyle, too.

    • Judy_J

Very cute dress!  Wish she would have left the belt at home, but that’s a minor quibble.  She looks great.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

i love that she had it lengthened.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1241487378 Lauren Lynch Fox

      She looks great!

    • Sara__B

No! The belt makes the dress bunch up around her waist, and the bodice seam is supposed to be UNDER the bust not on it. The colors do look great on her, but she’s still making me cringe.

    • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

Actually, the belt & shoes don’t bother me so much–at least the shoes are not platform pumps, right?  She looks very cute  but doesn’t have the “I look cute and I know it” vibe powering her smile and her pose, which is too bad.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

She’s really so pretty.  Glad that she’s not rocking some tragic this time.

I like it but I wish the bodice was more fitted and her make-up looked less DIY and THAT HAIR. MUH. Maybe I don’t like it as much as I thought…

    • guest2visits

Agree, pretty; not crazy about the belt.

    • Contralto

She looks very cute and very much like her mother in that first shot.  The dress is unusual but I like it.

    • frankystein123

I’m sorry, but her posture simply does not translate into confidence.

    • PeaceBang

Love, love, love the dress!! On the model. Rashida messed it up.

    • aeg66

Lordy yes that lipstick, the shoes, even the hair, wrong BUT the first degree  crime is that belt.

    • RzYoung

Aw, I do really like her, I remember that NyLon series she did for the BBC with Lady Clairol (-did that ever screen in the US?) and she was adorable in it, very endearing.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=688150598 Elizabeth Siegel

      I really want this dress.

    • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

Her mother is Peggy Lipton – it’s about time she worked her gene pool!  Could never figure out why she always had such a bad haircut.

    • butterflysunita

What a cute and seasonally appropriate dress!
