Michelle Obama in Bibhu Mohapatra on Jay Leno

Posted on August 14, 2012

Shelley got it right for TV.

First Lady Michelle Obama makes an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’ in a Bibhu Mohapatra dress from his resort collection.

Bibhu Mohapatra Resort 2012 Collection

What a great dress for her. What a perfect dress for a sit-down interview. The layered hem looks great when she crosses her legs. We don’t think this dress needed a belt, but she may have thought she needed one since she’d be seated. Fine, but that’s not the belt we would have recommended. Thinner, and black patent leather, we’re thinking.

There’s those shoes again. She’s gotten a LOT of mileage out of that simple pair. Good for her. She doesn’t always pair them well, but they go perfectly with the dress. Yes, they’re matchy, but the dress has at least 4 colors in it and her shoes are pulling out the least dominant one. That’s exactly the way we think it should be done.

FLOTUS brings it. that belt looks like an oversized linky dude’s watch band, but what the hell. love me some shelly o.

    • The belt is a misstep, and keeps it from being WERQ-worthy, but otherwise she looks fantastic.  I wouldn’t have thought that yellow would work well with her skin tone, but somehow it does.

      • Sobaika

For shame. FLOTUS is always a WERQ by default.

(I am an Obama family fangirl and make no apologies.)

        • lovelyivy

Why would one apologize for that? They are fabulous.

        • Anyone who is a fan of Mrs. Obama is OK by me, because I love her too: as a First Lady, she defines “WERQ.”

But I don’t like that belt.

          • Sobaika

I never like her belts. Why is she so obsessed with them?

          • As Coco Chanel once said: “It is the imperfection that makes the look perfect.”

I’m totes making that up.  I have no idea if she ever said such a thing.  But she should have.

          • Wendi126

I love that you made that up! I completely bought it til I read further. Applause

          • Thundar99

5 months later…adding to the applause;)

      •  That belt looks like an ammo belt, you know, the one for the revolvers that have bullets all the way around…Not in a good way either.  Her hair is kinda cray-cray too….Otherwise great color on her!

    • AudreysMom

I actually thought it was one of those bullet belts like you see in the westerns. One for every member of the RNC. (jk, of course)

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

those shoes make the whole look.  they really are a fantastic color.

    • kschwarting

And they’re affordable, too–from one of FLOTUS’ favorites, J. Crew.

  • gabbilevy

She looks fabulous. I think you’re right about the belt: pewter doesn’t really seem to be the right color for this dress. But she and Jay both look like they’re having a good time, which means I”ll have to break my own never-watch-Leno rule and watch this interview.

    • Oh, and Gabby Douglas is on it too!

      • gabbilevy

Ohmygosh I just saw that! Squee! She’s my favorite Olympian (it doesn’t hurt that her name is Gabrielle). Missy Franklin is my other fave.

        • Sobaika

If it makes you feel any better, Gabby shuts it down and lets Leno know who’s in change – Mrs. O.

          • formerlyAnon

And she’s SO good at what she does – when Gabby called out an egg mcmuffin as the forbidden treat she just had to have when she could break training after the games, Ms. Obama countered with a reference to her healthy eating campaign but turned it into a “we can’t encourage Jay in his bad eating habits” moment and not an admonishment of a young girl on national t.v.

    •  It aired last night, but I’m sure you can catch it online or on Hulu. She and Leno have a great rapport – they were very good together. And Gabby Douglas was adorable, too!

  • jw_ny

A perfect summery dress for the occasion, she looks lovely.  She’s also a joy to watch/listen to.  🙂

hate the belt with it tho…

  • siriuslover

I loved this dress. I also thought she was really funny last night! Loved her comments about the secret service looking for her under the play tent in London and her daughter Malia making her and President Obama get it right for the kiss cam.

  • Sara LaBatt

She looks great, I love the shoes with it.  Also I want that dress, love the movement in it and the interesting colors.  Pretty pretty!

  • Catiline

I am swooningly in love with that dress!

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Love this.  Agree that the belt doesn’t really go – but she loves big bold belts and this whole outfit is totally “her style”, so Brava!!

  • DaveUWSNYC

Long may she wave…and long may we rave.

  • BrooklynBomber

Though I don’t like the dress, I think it looks really good on her. What’s with that belt, though?

    • sojourneryouth

I agree.  There’s something rather eighties about the whole thing that I don’t like–maybe its the print???  However, she looks great.  I do wish there were some kind of intervention for her horrible deployment of belts.  Is there some kind Belter’s Anonymous to be found?  I believe the first step is admitting that you have a problem.

  • The belt is the only thing that’s off. She looks fantastic otherwise.

Man, I love that woman.  Her husband ain’t half bad either.

  • Sigh. What a friend we have in FLOTUS. ‘specially when she looks this great!

    • Rebecca Zmarzly

As a throwback to my small country church upbringing, I totally put your comment to the tune of “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. Hilarious!

What a friend we have in FLOTUS
‘Specially when she looks this great!
What a privilege to watch her
When we stay up way too late.

      • Between this and the Galadriel drinkning song from yesterday, we may be on our way to a Bitter Kitten Song Book!

    • Hey, kiltdntild, sorry to go off-topic, but had to ask: what is your take on utilikilts? I’m going to GenCon in Indy tomorrow, and you won’t be able to swing a Bitter Kitten without hitting a guy in a utilikilt.

      • I have several myself, and wear them primarily at work, since they truly are practical. Plus I will say that they are really well constructed, and can stand a lot of hard use. From a design standpoint, there are a few issues with how the ends tend to curl back at the bottom. But then, the original design was done by someone who had no design training.

        • I agree. For the gamer on the go, they seem to hold everything you need. I just didn’t know if you would object to “non-traditional” kilts. Thanks for the reply!

  • Trisha26

That belt looks like something a bandolier would wear to hold bullets…

    • kimmeister

EXACTLY – I immediately thought of ammo!

  • She looked great in this last night!

Also, I saw her speak when she was in Philadelphia last week, and she’s taller, prettier, and more svelte in person! She looked great then, too.

  • Anathema_Device

The dress on the model seems to have a defined waistband or matching belt, so I don’t think she really needed a belt at all. That is a minor quibble, though. Love this dress and she is rocking it. I also love those pumps and am so glad she gets mileage out of them.

  • Also, I just noticed that the dress kind of looks too fussy on the model, but just the opposite on Shelly. Perhaps because she wasn’t spending too much time walking in it, and it lays beautifully when she sits.

  • I hate her hair right now. I know, I know…don’t start with me.

  • Love, love, love! Especially the shoe choice, but also…everything. She looks great!

  • unbornfawn

Agreed this is a great dress for her. Vibrant, happy but not over the top. I don’t get her compulsion with belts that sit too high. I’ll never figure that one out.

  • TheLaurenJean

That hair though! Slicked back like that is not good.

    • understateddiva

and it’s so tall! not feeling it.

  • mjude

my usual response when she is featured on TLO is LOVE HER, once again i stand by that.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I really dislike that belt, but otherwise she looks AMAZING.

  • elleg929

That belt ruined everything for me.  Couldn’t really see the dress for the belt.

  • formerlyAnon

    Agree on the belt.

Stayed up just to watch and it was worth it. She looked tired, but she was great. Struck the “everywoman” notes one would expect, seemingly effortlessly. Funny and smart as hell.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Love this dress for her. My only quibble here is with the belt, which looks like an ammo belt. Otherwise, I think this look works well for her.

  • SapphoPoet

I LOVE that dress. She looks like summer. I agree about the belt.

  • SewingSiren

Love the dress and hair. I do not love the belt. She’s a belt person, I’m not.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I wish she hadn’t belted it. She’s cheating herself of a beautiful line. Still, it’s a great dress and she looks great in it. Fun and comfortable, but still classy.

  • Dude, looks better on her than the model, well done Shelly!

Also, I agree it’s really nice to see her wear shoes more than once. Wish she’d wear dresses more than once, too. She’d get support just for the money saving aspects.

  • guest2visits

I think it’s another attractive dress; she seems to make really good fashion choices.

  • ASK26

belt looks hiddy and adds visual girth

  • Rrroza

Spectacular! Except why not the self belt shown on model?

  • I hate the belt. Would rather see Gabby Douglas outfit. 🙂 She dressed bad *ss gold medalist style.

  • Jessi03

Love love love it!  She and Gabby Douglas looked so flipping cute on the couch together.  I was hoping you’d do this outfit!

  • Judy_J

A simple black patent leather belt would have been perfect with this dress.  Other than that, I have no complaints.  She looks beautiful.

  • nannypoo

Jay Leno’s set includes that couch that isolates its inhabitants from the conversation between Leno and the newest guest, so whoever sits there looks like a schmuck. But so highly developed are the skills of our fabulous FLOTUS that when she moved there she managed to participate in Gabby Douglas’ interview and make it even better. She is so smart, warm, gracious and funny – oh, and her dress was great too.

  • GorgeousThings

While I agree a thin black patent belt would have been better, I don’t really object to this one. That dress is fantastic. Pity those colors would make me look like I’m suffering consumption. But on her they look great.

  • ccm800

Picture Nancy Reagan…now look at Michelle, now Nancy, now Michele. Cue old spice music.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Interesting that everyone makes these comparisons between Michelle Obama and Nancy Reagan, not the current FLOTUS and Hillary Clinton or Laura Bush.

      • formerlyAnon

I think it’s because Mrs. Reagan, in a different way, was just as prominent a Supportive Political Wife as Ms. Obama and just as [apparently] comfortable in the role as First Lady, but the other two struggled more visibly in the role.

Laura Bush is warm and intelligent (I know people who went to school with her, one in elementary & high school & some in graduate school) but her political wifery was more dutiful and less comfortable for her, though just as loyal. Secretary Clinton always seemed a little restricted by the boundaries of the public role of a First Lady, and for her the transition from professional to full time Political Wife was more visible.

  • MilaXX

Love the dress, totally hate that belt. I wish she had done a thin, black one instead. Jay Leno gives me the urge to punch him every time I see him.n I’d love to see some pics of Gabby Douglas. I think she has a beautiful smile.

  • Call me Bee

She looks lovely and the shoes are perfect with it. Summery and nice.
And I am really old-school, but the FLOTUS and even the POTUS don’t need to appear on talk shows. Seems weird to me. But, again, I’m really old school when it comes to dignitatries and such.

    • formerlyAnon

I felt like that (about talk shows) the first time or two it happened. Now I’m used to it. Kinda. I think, as with so many things nowadays, that ship has sailed.

  • frannyprof

I love this look. Even the belt.

  • hellyesiwould

I love this dress. I saw a clip of the show and wanted to know who the designer was.

  • She is beautiful! that’s a WERQ in my book. Love her.

  • EEKstl

She looks gorgeous but that looks more like ammo than a belt.  But the dress is stunning and she is stunning in it.

  • They showed some adorable pictures of her as a girl.

  • quiltrx

Love our FLOTUS!  That is a fabulous dress!!

  • Yeah, the belt doesn’t work, but I love the look–it’s a lovely sit down dress.

  • bellafigura1

I’m just mad for her. I like the belt — she’s trying to edge it up a bit. I’m good with that.

  • R. L.

She’s awesome, rarely misses the mark.

  • She is way hot, but her taste in belts really does bug.  The hair’s a little Betty Ford but I don’t necessarily hate it.  I only truly hate hair that has visible roots.

  • julnyes

very nice look, though I don’t think that shade of yellow is really the best for her.

  • Judih1

I like the dress, but think it is too youthful for her. Sorry Michelle

  • Fun fact: that’s Kendal (Shay) from ANTM modeling the Bibhu dress!

  • TieDye64

The belt is a misstep, but otherwise she looks fanfreakingtastic.

  • RzYoung

She needs a belt-ivention, but she looks great here.

  • kaycem

    this dress is heavenly!

  • Larkin21

Love her! Just a plus that she happens to look perfect here.
