Yet more of the eyebrowless wonder and still no Cumberbatch…

    • twocee

He looks freakishly like a young Lyle Lovett.  Also, he rocks a patterned suit.

      • Ginger

You beat me to it (re: Lyle Lovett)!

        • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

That is exactly what I was thinking. Must be the hair and nose combo.

      • MoHub

But I think he stole the suit from Alan Cumming.

      • Rina

For some reason, I see him as a young Wallace from Wallace and Gromit!

        • TieDye64

          LOVE Wallace and Gromit!

      • LambeeBaby

I thought the same thing! But there is a bit of Crispin Glover mixed in.

    • lovelyivy

I swoon for this editorial, he does a fantastic job of bringing the clothes alive and bringing his personality to play. SO MUCH BETTER than yet another desert, abandoned diner or what have you.

    • Kimmu

He’s serving some Lyle Lovett realness in the picture by the pond. Love the plaid suit.

    • BelladonnaRising

Does this scream 80s to anyone else? Flock of Seagulls hair! I’m totally loving this whole spread; especially the last photo. And that plaid Ralph Lauren suit is so charming on him.

      • schadenfreudelicious

        “and i raaaaannnn” :)

      • Lenora Dody

Flock of Seagulls hair is much pointier!

    • PinkLemon

    • Imasewsure

He’s so fun to look at and doesn’t give the same damn face every time… a little pale for my taste but that suits him (as do these beautiful skinny boy clothes)…

    • mellorcr

      WAY     TOO     MUCH     MAKEUP    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • C Deal

That pompadour is fierce and he is rocking it!

    • Judy_J

Great hair.  Love the red plaid suit.

    • krelnick

More of the eyebrowless wonder and still no Cumberbatch…

      • schadenfreudelicious

agreed, while he wears the clothes well, his looks dont appeal to me (please dont hate me Doctorgals)…would love to see me some Benedict (and some more Idris :) if we are fawning over BBC boys…

        • PastryGoddess

           IDRIIIIIS! nom nom nom

          • schadenfreudelicious

i need season three of Luther in a bad, bad way….

        • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

No hate! I recently discovered Sherlock and absolutely love it, plus Cumberbatch has a divine Rickman-esque voice.

          • schadenfreudelicious

i could listen to Alan Rickman read me the phonebook..swoon….

            • MajorBedhead

You have to go to YouTube and find Alan Rickman Makes Epic Tea. Sadly, no talking, but it’s a solid 4 minutes of Rickman in slow motion. Yummmmmmmy.

            • MoHub

And only RIckman could get away with it. I’ve watched it multiple times.

          • Maria Rosenfire

FYI: He reads audiobooks. It’s glorious.

            • insertcleverbit

My mind is blown, and I’m currently scouring Amazon for audio books read by Alan Rickman.

        • jilly_d

I’m with you on the appeal factor.  And also with you on the “More Idris PLZ”.  Needs ta get me some Stringer Bell.

        • DesertDweller79

Matt Smith is good in Doctor Who, and makes an interesting model.

But I would never say no to Cumberbatch or Idris.  In fact, I would say yes please.

      • Lenora Dody

Sorry, new season premiers this weekend so we are wallowing in Dr. Who!!!

      • DeborahJozayt

Did you get to see his Frankenstein theatre debut? They were showing it at the movie theaters here in the U.S. a few months ago, but it should be on DVD soon. It’s two plays, one where he is the monster, and one where he is Frankenstein. The acting and stage design is wonderful!

        • julnyes

Saw both versions here in New York. Jonny Lee Miller was quite good, but Cumberbatch’s Creature and Victor were far superior in my opinion. It is a bit funny that Miller is now starring in a American Sherlock Holmes series. It’s like an extension of their trading roles in Frankenstein.

        • krelnick

Saw both versions!  Fantastic.  Although I thought Cumberbatch was better in both roles.  I’ve heard that it will NEVER be on DVD, though.  Something about artistic integrity or some such nonsense.

But seriously; TLo needs to feature BC here.  For realz.

      • juliamargaret

        Cum-ber-BATCH! Cum-ber-BATCH! Cum-ber-BATCH!

    • formerlyAnon

      Photos #2, 6 & 7 FTW!

Not that he looks bad in the others, but he can pull off the slightly unusual patterns as many cannot.

Thank-you fellas. You are extending my feeling of benevolence-toward-the-populace with this. It may last till I get to my car.

(And props to stylist Gareth Scourfield)

    • Kiltdntiltd

It has been a long time since a guy-torial has made me lust after the clothes pictured in it.  I am now seriously in Want Mode,….Everyone out of my way.

      • formerlyAnon

         Charge cards at the ready!

        • Kiltdntiltd

      • mjude

i will carry your bags for you!

        • Kiltdntiltd

That is the mark of a true friend!!!

      • Gayer Than Thou

        Totally agreed.  Love the clothes!

        • Kiltdntiltd

The grey wool check suit with the Varvatos tie and shirt is making me weak kneed with unbridled sartorial desire.

          • Gayer Than Thou

Grey wool suit from Calvin Klein is to die for.  And I would look good in it, too.

            • Kiltdntiltd

True facts!  Since I’m a kilty kinda guy, I’m focusing on the upper half of things mostly.  That said, I’m in for the Ralph Lauren plaid, the Calvin Klein melange tweed, and the Etro striped to go along with the Varvatos checked gray wool.

            • Gayer Than Thou

I am not a fan, however, of “contrasting sleeves.”  But the rest of it is fabu.

            • Kiltdntiltd

Neither am I, really.  You must have noted that that jacket was not on my list.

            • Gayer Than Thou

I did. It’s the one misstep in this whole editorial.

          • Eclectic Mayhem

I’ll hold him down while you get the suit.  Then I get Matt Smith.  Deal?

            • Kiltdntiltd

In fact, you may have him with no contest, since I am quite sure we’re not the same size, so it would be pointless for me to tear his clothes off. I admire him as the good Doctor, but he doesn’t send me, (in that way).

    • wisenhar

The pic with the red plaid suit is the first time I’ve understood people’s attaction to him.

    • PastryGoddess

WHY?!  WHY can’t guy-torials ALL be like this.  Matt and Esquire have thrown down the gauntlet, let’s see if any boy-star is man enough to pick it up

    • Anathema_Device

Love the plaid and the striped suits on him so much. He does photograph well, doesn’t he? The jumping/striding shot is a little goofy, but that’s okay.

    • librarygrrl64

He has never given me The Feelings, but I do agree that he makes a great model and wears clothes well.

    • j_anson

They certainly caught him in a lot of interesting expressions that I don’t think of as characteristic for him. I like the one where he looks like a priest. His face looks different when they brush the hair back out of it – older, I think. I could do without the “garden + giant blocks of color + bizarre exposure levels” concept. It has too many elements without actually being interesting. But as a model, he’s working it.

      • understateddiva

hit it on the nose – too many elements.  The overexposure ruins a lot of the shots for me, though I do admit that most of them are interesting.

        • fursa_saida

I agree about the exposure. I feel that way about most of the shots, actually.

    • CaseyinNY

I just want to play with his hair…

      • WendyD

Back of the line! 😉  When I met him in March, it was all I could do not to touch it!

    • David Calder

That dashing motherfucker. I love the plaid pants off of him.

    • Rand Ortega

      What TLo said.
      Oh, & this:

    • marlie

At first I was going to say that the reg/green checked Ralph Lauren was my favorite, but then I saw the brown/green striped Etro, and then the blue Cornelian, and I couldn’t decide! So I guess they’re *all* my favorites! He looks great. :)

    • RoxieRider

You know, even women’s editorials often don’t change the hairstyle for every picture. That man has some versatile hair, and bravo to Esquire for actually using it.

    • call_me_schmeg

as only the most mature critic would say: yummy yummy screw.

    • frannyprof

Not my type, but he looks great.

    • sockandaphone

unusual-looking, thats pretty good. Like I dont find him attractive but he has such interesting face features. Also this editorial is awesome.

    • AngelaGreen

Holy shit, I love The Doctor.

    • crash1212

      THE PLAID SUIT!!!!!

    • alyce1213

Matt’s hair is a force of nature.  These are so graphically interesting and he’s a really good model.  I especially love the one seated on the grass having a little snack, sweet, charming.

    • ccm800

Lyle Lovett and Chris Isaaks’ first born son.

    • MilaXX

      I concur, more Matt please.

    • l_c_ann

(Blushing) I ask if anyone knows which garden this was shot in?

He looks great, and definitely as if he fits into the rather nebulous Doctor mode.

    • julnyes

Anyone know what kind of dog (or hellbeast) that is?

Matt and his hair look great.

      • l_c_ann

My first thought was the dog was mostly Mastiff.  I don’t think they have Feists in Great Britain.

    • Esz

Very cool editorial and he does the model thing very well – but he doesn’t float my boat really – not that hot – too much jaw….somehow.

      How shallow of me

      • formerlyAnon

I suspect it is less shallow to not be enticed by someone one’s never met, than it is to be enticed by someone one’s never met. Or at least, it’s more grounded which is kind of the opposite of shallow. Um, right?

    • afabulous50

That is one freaky looking dude.

    • cmb92191

He sure is rocking the 80’s Chris Isaak hair.  One shot reminded me of early Morissey

    • mhleta

First I’ve heard of him. Looks like the bastard child of Lyle Lovett and John Malkovich. He sure makes for a great focal point in these amazing photos. Love the use of the geometric shapes and the saturated colors.

    • Dhammadina

Not once did you use ‘adorable’ in comments this time round but still true, still freakin’ adorable.

    • skadi1

There can never be enough Matt Smith. He really does make a fabulous model.

    • GraduallyGreener

Hee hee.  A couple of those suits really remind me of Tenth Doctor’s outfits!

    • boweryboy

He has a bod built for clothes, yet his sex appeal continues to allude me.

    • Joyce VG

That was was a a freakishly large dog in the first shot.   Matt looks fabulous!

    • MajorBedhead

He’s working the hell out of those clothes. I love the last shot and the one with the cuppa tea especially. He doesn’t float my boat the way Ten does (mmmm, David Tennant needs to do something like this) or Benedict Cumberbatch does, but this is the sexiest I’ve ever seen him look and that’s not a bad thing.

    • SewingSiren

I didn’t think it could get any better than the red plaid suit with a green necktie , but  I do believe the striped one with the gold tie has got it beat.
      All very sharp and wearable.

    • SatelliteAlice

      I heart you doctor.
He is adorable and I love the picture of him with the tea.

    • quiltrx

He definitely joins the pantheon of my Great-Man-Hair Hall of Fame.

And he makes a great model…you get a slightly different guy in each pic, instead of some empty-eyed mannequin.

    • Lexie

He normally isn’t my cup of tea, but I absolutely LOVE this.

    • Lisa

I’m not even a Dr. Who fan, and I just LOVE whenever he shows up on these pages.  He looks magnificent!

    • Andrea Lane

      In love.

    • NCDFan

    • Austen Jane

The 80s hair looks more like The Cars than Flock of Seagulls.

    • miagain

      I love the last picture!!

    • afabulous50

      He completely creeps me out.

    • jimmack

He looks great. This is how it is done people. One bit of advice: CHIN UP please.

    • snarkykitten

what’s with the awful washed out lighting?

    • Pamela

I haven’t wanted to run my hands through a man’s hair this much since Hugh Grant in “Four Weddings and a Funeral”.  That mane rocks!

    • TieDye64

Such an interesting spread. Love it. I’m especially digging that last shot. He’s so damn photogenic, whether you think him hot or not.

    • lucasuk82

Amazing!  Much as I love his hair, I think chopping into something really severe would be a great choice once his tenure as The Doctor is over.

    • gabbilevy

Matt looks delicious, but in SPITE of the photographer. You know what this looks like to me? The images came back from the shoot with terrible light and color balance, and they were desperate to make them work in photoshop. Hire me, next time, Esquire! I’m sure I can bring out the … ahem.. best in him.

    • Snickleboom

    • Susan Crawford

He looks . . . fabulous! One question? What is “puppytooth”?

    • Cole Robertson

    • Krysta

OH SHIT. That is an attractive man, is what that is.  And I like how his hair isn’t in The Doctor’s hanging quiff in all the pictures.

    • Josefina Madariaga Suárez

      Also: cheekbones.
