Kylie Minogue in Dolce&Gabbana

Posted on August 03, 2012

Oh, Kylie. Sweetie.

Kylie Minogue arrives at her management company in London in a Dolce&Gabbana jacket.

Dolce&Gabbana Embellished Jacket

Listen, time is a cruel mistress; we get it. But there’s no need to rush headlong into “Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall” territory just yet, girl. Shit. You’re making us feel old here. Go put on a mini-dress and dance with some half-naked guys dressed like gladiators, PRONTO. It’s always worked for us when we needed a little cheering up, dear.

Although it is, admittedly, a fabulous jacket. We just think she could have styled it with a little more oomph.

Not only does that jacket look like it belongs to the wardrobe of my (now deceased) grandmother, it also makes Kylie look super short and boxy – a feat I didn’t think possible. Whip it off, Kylie!

    • MilaXX

       well she is short….

      • I think the point is that it’s a very stumpifying outfit.

        • annie_wonder

Yeah, I mean obviously we all know Kylie is a little pixie but usually she looks in proportion. The jacket looks too top-heavy here I think.

    • Sobaika

      I believe she’s somewhere around 4’10.

      • Short yes, but NOT boxy. Girl weighs about 70 pounds.

        • Sobaika

I don’t think she looks boxy, especially in the full shots. It’s not the most fashion forward outfit of hers, but it’s sort of what I expect a jacket of hers to be: bright and glitzy.

    • ccinnc

I was thinking Palm Beach Matron.

  • What is she wearing underneath?… Or better yet IS she wearing anything underneath the jacket?

    • alyce1213

Hard to tell, except in the last shot you can see a bit of something beige over the top of her pants.

  • My first bought was that she was out looking at retirement properties in Boca Raton.

    • ballerinawithagun

      Yes, 55 and older….

      • Plus, that jacket hits her at precisely the widest part of her hips.

        • Deb_Lynn

skinny jeans with some decently placed fading would’ve improved this look. Keep everything else, replace the  pants.

          • SassieCassy

yes agreed. the jacket is not the problem, its actually really fun and blingy

      • greyhoundgirl

Honey, I’m “55 and older” and no way.  It’s not just an age thing, it’s so much more.

      •  No “55 and older” jokes—-I turned that today and am feeling decidedly ambivalent about the experience.

Not ambivalent about this style, though.  I’m not quite sure WHY it doesn’t work–gold and black are always a safe pairing, if not an exciting one–but it sure doesn’t.

        • NDC_IPCentral

NurseEllen – Happy birthday, you youngster.  I remember 55, sorta…. so you’re a kiddo in my book.  And I’d never wear this jacket – Annie Wonder’s “deceased grandmother” characterization was spot on.

        • mjude

you are fab!  welcome to the club!  i know the jacket is dated but i have been thinking about judy lately & well i like it for that reason:)

          happy birthday…xo

          •  Judy…..she may be my all-time favorite singer/actress.  Kylie seems to be channeling Judy in other ways here, too, and none of them good.  For instance, something about the sunglasses remind me of Judy’s years of hideous pointy eyebrows (during her marriage to Sid Luft).

        • 3boysful

Happy B’day, Nurse Ellen!  Today’s mine as well, but I am only slightly behind you.

The jacket aside, I cannot go with cropped pants anymore after sitting in the airport recently and noting they are the summer apparel of choice for ladies of a certain age who don’t want to wear real pants, and pair the crops with sloppy sneakers.

          • Happy birthday to both of you. May you live long enough to think that 55 is just a kid.

          •  We August 3rd babies need to stick together!  Hope your day was as nice as mine was.

          • I live in a building populated by 55s and older, and I haven’t seen ANY of my neighbors swanning around in anything that grannyish!

One good thing about being “a woman of a certain age” is that I no longer give a damn what anyone has to say about my personal style.  Ever since my neighbors found out I can still do the splits before cashing my Medicare checks, they’ve bumped me up to Eccentric Goddess territory.

  • Pennymac

Agreed. It is a fabulous jacket. For Joan Rivers…..

    • uprightcitizen

I thought of Joan Rivers, immediately! If the jacket were a little longer and the sandals had a lower heel, it would be a great dressy outfit for Marie Barone on “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Sad thing about the Judy Garland comment (while true), is that she was dressing like this in her late 30s and early 40s. She just looked like she was in her late 50s.

  • Imagine if she’d worn a killer pencil skirt and some less Payless-looking shoes with that jacket?

    • I don’t think those are really the problem tbh. More like the jacket is ill-fitting as hell.

    • my thoughts exactly! the jacket, while a little on the mature side, is fabulous as fuck. especially with those shades! but those trousers are tragic.

  • clatie

That coat was designed for Nancy Reagan, right?

  • Somehow the jacket on her is giving me maternity top vibes, despite all the shininess and bling.

  • MilaXX

I don’t think the sunglasses fit her face well. The jacket needs to be given back to Joan Rivers and the cuff and length of the pants is a bad thing on someone already vertically challenged. If this was an IN or OUT this would be and OUT.

  • RebeccaKW

I adore that jacket.  But those pants are hideous.  I actually wish she’d worn, like, leather skinny jeans or something to give it an edge.

  • SpcilK

I thought she was Scarlett Johansson.

  • Looks like the kind of jacket they sell to mother of the brides’ to wear over a gown at David’s bridal.

Matter of fact make it silver and gray and it would be a perfect match for what I saw an aunt of mine wear at her daughter’s wedding a few years ago.

  • greyhoundgirl

Is she 80?  Nothing wrong with being 80, IF you’re 80.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

oyster cracker sized rhinestones, no matter the designer & no matter the color, will always tacky a person down. the most difficult thing here to believe though is that dolce & gabbana made something either for the late queen mother or the grandmother of the bride.

    • 3boysful

I had never pondered the question of the size of the rhinestones, but you are SO right.  Excellent observation.  I guess altho they are larger, fewer=cheaper to apply=tacko-racko.

  • I think she’s  not wearing a shirt underneath and it’s unbuttoned – that’s pretty oomphy!

  • TheOriginalLulu

Yeah, she should put that in her closet and only pull it back out 30 years from now.

  • susan6

She looks like a dowager on her way to a “ladies who lunch” type function.

  • Yeah, my first thought was “old lady jacket.” Which doesn’t mean it couldn’t be dressed up – I almost bought a gold brocade old lady suit in a thrift store for the separates and kick myself now that I didn’t – but this isn’t how to do it. Even just a pair of dark jeans and a tank could have lifted this. See also: only closing the top button. Why not just leave it open?

  • Judy_J

That is a fabulous jacket.  Perhaps since she was visiting her management company, she wanted to project a more mature, business-like image.

  • Yes. Tight black miniskirt showing only two or three inches below the jacket, and it’s all fixed. I could then forgive the grandmotherly vibe, the cheap looking shoes, the too-pointy shades. So it’s the pants. They’re definitely hideous and do her no favors.

  • sashaychante

Did she raid the River’s ladies closet?  Jacket…Joan Rivers.  The rest…Melissa.

    • alyce1213

I doubt either Rivers would wear anything this ugly and dowdy. Joan is the queen of jackets, but they are always nicer than this gaudy, dowdy, over-embellished boxy thing.

      • sashaychante

It is a surprising ugly jacket.  It looks kinda cheap all jacked up like it is, and I’m quite sure it’s got a hefty price tag.

  • I do love her sunglasses.

  • PastryGoddess

My dead grandma would love that outfit.  Those shoes are fab though

  • Snailstsichr

I love the fact that they sewed those big “jewels” to the jacket – you don’t even need to remember to wear a necklace!! I’m sure I’m going to need one of those for when I go dotty yet need to make an appearance at Wal Mart.

  • alyce1213

This is not a fabulous jacket. It’s hideous.

  • call_me_schmeg

    this needed jeans

  • margaret meyers

Great minds think alike.  The boys  s t o l e  my joke hours before I made it!

  • That would be a lovely jacket for Carol Channing.

  • BitterOldQueen

Not so much Judy. This is full-on Liza.

  • TSkot

Wow.  I had no idea Kylie was 75 years old.

  • butterflysunita

This is not the diva Kylie I know and love.  She’s way too young for that look.

  • The jacket sleeves hit in a really odd length, as does the hem. It just looks way too boxy on her — when we all know that’s not her figure. I like the concept of the jacket, just not what it’s doing for her.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Just trade the pants for a white mini. Done!

I actually think that jacket is hideous.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

“Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall” is exactly why I love this look!  I find it very joyous.  Unfortunately, I think a taller lady would look better in this outfit than Ms. Kylie.

  • aeg66

I don’t know what surprises me more: that she knows Barbara Bush or stole her jacket.

  • All I can see is Mrs. Howell!

  • Linderella

Just from the cropped photo on the main page, I thought, “What are TLo talking about?!  It’s great!”  Then I saw the sad little pants and drab shoes (which seem too tight, they’re squishing the top of her feet into little sausages).  Eek.

  • sagecreek

I’ve been completely assimilated by the Unks, I screamed “Judy Garland” before even scrollling down 🙂

  • guest2visits

It looks like she has someone else’s jacket on; it needs to be longer on her, or customized to fit her tiny-ness.
The pants don’t live up to the jacket, it looks like the bottoms were flipped up to create a cuff, – looks too casual.

    • littlemac8

I’m 4’11” and I’m sure I outweigh Kylie.  I’m fascinated by what tiny stars like Kylie and Salma wear.  Even tiny petite clothes are disproportional on me.  I don’t know how they do it or in this particular case, don’t do it!

  • FLOTUS called, she wants her outfit back.

  • H3ff

I think the harsh sunlight is working against the look…

  • MmmmmmmmK

Might have been okay with more of a bolero cut and a fitted sleeve. The color doesn’t do her any favors  — it needs to be more vivid, and that gold braiding crap all over needs to go.  It screams “Chicos”.  It’s just kind of tacky, which is forgivable if you’re tiny and cute, but if it makes you look dumpy, that’s a whole other thing.

  • JulieTy

    Joan Rivers.

  • littlemac8

Ha Ha Ha!!!  I did a spit take at the Judy Garland reference.  SPOT ON BROTHERS!!!

  • Ethel Merman and Judy Garland were both buried in that same get up!

    • Susan Crawford

Bert! So great to see you on the commentariat!

And you are right – this is definitely a La Merm entree with a side of Judy. Part of it is that the jacket is HUGE on Minogue’s tiny frame, and if’ she wanted to go with cropped pants, she should have skipped the roll-up cuffs.

On the other hand, I now feel I need to haul out my “Gypsy” cast album and Judy’s London Palladium album and have a nice, nostalgic afternoon. Wanna join me?

  • Nonnah

I would love to see this outfit on Joan Collins.

  • Le_Sigh

KYLIE YOU ARE NOT 85 YET!!!!  Change into that black bustier top and leather pants combo we KNOW you initially tried that jacket on with.

  • Dr. Derf van der Derf

I think she stole that from Queen Elizabeth.
