Kirsten Dunst in Jean Paul Gaultier

Posted on August 24, 2012

We loved this at a glance…

Kirsten Dunst attends the premiere of ‘Bachelorette’ at ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood in a Jean Paul Gaultier dress paired with a Chloé ‘Elsie’ bag.

Jean Paul Gaultier Resort 2013 Collection

But it wasn’t until we realized it was a sleeveless belted trench coat with spaghetti straps that we leaped out of our seats with applause and huzzahs (figuratively speaking). Whatever else you might say about that dress, it’s sure as hell unique. And pretty, to our eyes. The color looks great on her.

And we’re pleased as punch to get confirmation that she clearly hangs onto our every word, because the last time we wrote about her, we bitched about how limp and flat her hair always looks on the RC and here she is, sporting soft waves that frame her face and make her look ready to join the rest of Charlie’s Angels on a case.

Hey, maybe there’s a whole “private detective” homage going on here. Columbo’s old coat turned into a fabulous dress paired with Kelly Garrett’s hair. Genius. We’d give it a WERQ but it’s awfully wrinkled, we hate what little we can see of the shoes and we’re just a tiny bit disappointed she didn’t try the turban. Still, excellent job, Kiki!

The dress seems a bit long on her, but she is owning that color and her hair and makeup are the best Ive seen it!

    snaps girl!

    • Sobaika

Right, it would have been pitch-perfect if they’d taken it in around the midsection. The fabric isn’t supposed to bunch on either side of her waist like that.

    • snarkmeister

I thought it was big all ’round.  The spaghetti straps are a skosh too long, which – coupled with the bunching at the waist and the length – makes it look like she’s playing dress-up.  It’s just hanging off of her.  I love the design of the dress and the color is fabulous on Kiki, and god knows, her face & hair haven’t looked that good in ages (maybe ever) but the fit on the dress makes me weep.

      • jmorino08

I thought it looked big all over too, but it appears to have the same fit on the model. I agree that it would nearly perfect if they took it in a little bit. Except for those shoes… those are not good.

  • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Beautiful but it looks like the dress is hanging just a skotch too long… pull the straps up by about a half inch or so and this would be killer!

  • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow Kathy Marlow

I agree about everything TLo said, slap a pair of strappy silver sandals on her and we’d be carrying her around on our shoulders yelling “WERQ IT, KIKI”

  • http://twitter.com/Moondragonic Charlotte

Adorable dress, but I wish it was shorter. At knee length it would make a sassy little number.

    • snarkmeister

I thought the same thing.  And, like, 2 sizes smaller.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

It is a fabulous color, and dress, but it seems a bit too large. Otherwise, it’s great.  She too, is making a fashion come back.

  • Isadora Paiva

I love the color on her, but I guess I’m in the minority as to the hair. The soft waves look good, but I always think hair parted down the middle looks a bit weird.

    • Judih1

I feel the same way about her hair

  • joancarol

I love the dress, but it may be swallowing her up a bit. Beautiful color on her.

  • Trisha26

Hair & makeup are pretty. The dress, to my untrained eyes, is ludicrous.

  • pookiesmom

I can’t stand her, but the dress is cool.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks beautiful! Fresh, healthy, and comfy. I actually like that it’s a teensy bit long on her, it just works for the look (though I wish she’d worn a great pair of heeled brown leather sandals, jewels optional).

  • Lilak

There’s really so much success here, I happily surrender my nit-picking privileges (I say ‘pfft’)!

  • holzfaellen

At first sight, I thought this was a pretty sad-looking dress (flaps on top, too long and droopy bottom half). Actually, I still think it looks a bit sad, although I agree that the the idea behind it is bold and interesting.

    • holzfaellen

…oh, but the bag (just saw it) has me shrieking with joy. Fabulous little thing!

  • victoria rodeno

I am loving the color on her and it is the best I’ve seen her in a while. Go Kirsten, go.

  • belfebe

She looks fabulous!  You show them girl!

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I don’t particularly like the dress, but it suits her style and personality, and the color is gorgeous. Good job, Kiki!

  • call_me_schmeg

    turban! turban! turban!

  • piecesofconfetti

    Needs more turban!

  • J D

I don’t know why I feel such affection toward Kiki, but I do.  It’s so nice to see her looking great.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PCARAOJSL553GBBPQSLRYD5REE L.

Awesome color on her, and mighty cute trenchcoat design, but its a couple of sizes too big.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/QK3MTAHUVJCMI7DANY6WFCAIUM n a

thank GOD she skipped the turban!

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Word, that would take it from “resort” to “wet hair at the spa.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=588149191 Rex Griffin Pyle

Sorry, but that dress is cugly — ugly at the speed of light.

  • Lilithcat

As someone who is getting far too expert at tying a variety of headwraps, I wish she’d worn the turban.

  • Judy_J

I also thought it was clever to make a spaghetti strap dress using a trench coat design.  It wasn’t until I saw the buttonholes on the lapels that I realized it was a trench.  Great color, too.  I like it.

  • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com/ kristel

I don’t know that she could pull off a turban, I don’t think too many people can. Or maybe I should say I don’t think too many actors can.

  • j_anson

Eeeeeh… I can’t get behind this. I think I might like this if they had made it look a little less like they LITERALLY took a trenchcoat, buttoned it under her armpits, and threw some spaghetti straps over her shoulders. It feels less “inspired by” and more “actually is” than it should, because it’s a bit too bunchy and droopy.

  • mjude

    i think she looks great.

  • l_c_ann

Gaultier makes his first “One size fits all” evening drcoatess.

Can we call it a droat?

  • VicksieDo

It’s a WERQ! from me!  LOVE THAT DRESS so much, I would wear it every day.  That color is perfect on her, pops her eyes. Sigh.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

A turban would have made this look. As it is, I’m a little eh. Kirsten never really excites me with her outfits though.

  • CatherineRhodes

    The color is amazing.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

PR Judges – start eating your words. Ya’ll didn’t like Fabio’s head wrap thing on the model for this episode.
http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2012/08/pr-boys-town.html He sees trends!! He’s ahead of the fashion curve!!

    Have a good weekend, TLo!

  • jw_ny

Oh…I can just imagine Kiki’s reaction to wearing the turban would be a lot like Sally Field’s in Soapdish  “What I feel like is GLORIA FUCKING SWANSON!”  ;)

Love the trench gown and her hair…Kristen looks fab.  ;)

  • Anathema_Device

Love the deconstructed trench dress. I gasped as I scrolled down and saw the flaps and buttons. Gaultier is just amazing. This works so well on her, and I agree about the improved hair.

  • EEKstl

She was probably so thrilled with her Kelly Garrett hair that she didn’t dare cover it with a turban.  LOVE the dress and the color on her.

  • alyce1213

She looks absolutely beautiful, better than she has in a long time, and the color is inspired.  But that dress is silly.  I just don’t see it as anything other than a badly-conceived recycling project.

  • emily mcginnis

can we talk about what she wore on Jay Leno? it was terrible! her boobs were smooshed and looked to be in pain.

  • ChristinaRi

Wrinkled and has a big old spot on the front!

  • Tara

I loved this when I saw it on Jezebel earlier today.  I wondered what T&L would think (I thought they’d be on the fence).  Now I know.

  • PhillipWilde

Eh, the dress kind of reminds me of a terrycloth bath robe.

  • http://twitter.com/ktscrott katie eskridge

Surprised TLo didn’t do a close up of the necklace. It says FUCK OFF on it. Keep on keepin’ it classy Kiki.

  • MilaXX

The dress wins for color ad uniqueness, but loses points for being wrinkled and accessorized with the wrong shoe.

  • quiltrx

That’s a really clever dress!  Is it just me, or is it maybe a size too big on her, though?  Maybe it’s just a heavy dress, and the straps need to be a little shorter?  Not quite sure what it is that keeps it from being perfect.

    • Lisa

Yeah it is a little large.  She needs it hitched up and taken in, but other than that, she looks amazing.

  • RzYoung

Oh i love kiki, she never picks the dull route.

  • http://www.facebook.com/bert.keeter Bert Keeter

Color great…Dress may be “unique”, but looks sloppy. Needs a pair of bunny slippers and TV remote control to complete the stay at home look!

  • guest2visits

On the fence a little bit. She looks wonderful, the color is great on her and the idea is cute; I just think it’s either abit too long or
maybe it seems too large on her. Probably when she starts walking; it all falls into place.

  • littlemac8

She looks adorable.  I love that blue on her and I agree her hair looks better than I ever remember seeing it.  I love KiKi

  • PeaceBang

Oh, I feel so vindicated. I thought you were going to say, “We loved this at first glance, but then we hated it because __________.” And then I saw that you loved it even MORE than at first glance, which is just how I felt. To quote The Killers, “This Kiki IS MAHVELOUS!”

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UTAORC2LANQF2ONEFJYXBSITTA bingo

did you see the necklace?  it says fuck off.  literally.  hard to read in those photos.

  • Thathoodwink

Okay, please explain the idea of the overly-long buckled belt that you have to TIE in a KNOT. I wrote to Clinton Kelly because I had purchased a very nice wool coat with this flipping long belt. You can’t tuck the loooong end in and tied in a knot it looks plain stupid. Please educate and enlighten me!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/suzie.vazquez Suzie Vazquez

I feel like it’s just too big for her. Color and hair are great though!

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Not feeling the dress, but the color is great on her, and the hair looks great.

  • SewingSiren

I sure as hell would wear it with the turban. But I guess I have nothing to lose.

  • Neverbuynewclothes

Genius to pair a manly watch with that dress/coat.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sally-Barry/100000202371996 Sally Barry

What a STUNNING unusual shade of blue!  I love blue!  So weary of nude/black/white sausage casings, this looks just flowy and delicious.  Her hair and makeup are perfection.  I’m loving it, especially the beautiful shade of blue!  It looks like one of those odd, overlooked colors in the middle of the big box of Crayola crayons.  Wonder if there’s an official name for that color…

  • librarygrrl64

I wish she would have belted it a little bit tighter or gone down a size, though.
