Katy Perry for L’Officiel Magazine

Posted on August 29, 2012

Last month, Vogue Italia repackaged Katy into Lady Gaga. This month, L’Officiel turns her into Florence Welch. If we were Katy, we’d start getting a little offended.

Katy Perry covers the September 2012 issue of L’Officiel magazine photographed by Cuneyt Akeroglu in a Louis Vuitton Pre-fall 2012 dress.

Which is odd, because Katy doesn’t strike us as particularly chameleon-like. We can understand why editors and stylists would want to try something new with her because the cartoon-colored retro sets got played out. She doesn’t look bad at all here, but we reiterate what we said the last time: what’s the point in shooting Katy Perry for your cover but doing everything you can to make her not look like Katy Perry?

Red, not your hair color, Katy. Otherwise, not bad at all.

      • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow Kathy Marlow

        agreed!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lucía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

Absolutely, love the dresses but she can’t work this red, maybe a richer, darker hue could work.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Funny, I was thinking more along the red blonde range.

        • Derek_anny

Famke Jenssen / Jean Grey red.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Wow – totally Florence Welch! I agree, she looks good, but what is the point of making her look like someone else?

    • http://twitter.com/Moondragonic Charlotte

Doing something different is a good idea, making a celebrity completely unrecognizable seems to be missing the point of booking them in the first place.

    • gabbilevy

Huh. I like it, particularly the cover shot and the first one, but it’s so obviously working in Flo’s palette. She is really versatile but I would prefer she looks like… well, herself.

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Totally agree!  She has a beautiful, unique look all her own.

    • MilaXX

Red is definitely not her color. Theses are okay, but the makeup gives her face a sort of porcelain doll look.I’m sure that’s intentional, but I’m not a fan of the look.

      • mjude

agree about the porcelain doll look, doesnt suit her.

      • lovelyivy

Yeah, she’s going for an Ophelia/dying swan aesthetic that just doesn’t suit her personality. It’s ok, but I generally prefer her natural exuberance to the false distance we get here.

    • Catiline

I find this strangely boring.  Ms. Perry is not selling the look at all.

      • Sobaika

Because it’s not her look. It just looks odd.

    • charlotte

In the cover shot, the wig looks a bit like a hood or cloak. Freaky!

    • susan6

They’ve got a cover girl who can make INDIGO hair work, and they slap a red wig on her?  What?

    • nomoreprinces

I thought it was Lizzy Caplan until I read the cover.

    • Judy_J

Who is that girl?  She looks nothing like Katy Perry.

    • SewingSiren

Orange and black. NIce spread for Halloween. But it’s not even September yet.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

All she needs is a broom and a cartoon balloon that says, “BOO!”.

        • SewingSiren

          And a black cat.

          • DeborahJozayt

Don’t forget flying monkeys! She can put them to work!

    • 3boysful

In the cover shot , she is kinda channeling young Madonna.

    • SneakyKitty

Huh.  I actually kind of dig the red on her, but otherwise, yeah, I don’t see the point.  You can style her differently without just copying a recognizable look.  It’s lazy on the editor/photographer/stylist’s part.

    • Anathema_Device

It’s all so lifeless. Really don’t like the red hair on her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000357883139 Lynzee Michelle Lamb

I’m 99% sure that’s not even her natural jawline in the cover.

      • http://www.facebook.com/katiewolf2002 Katie Wolf

I scrolled back and, in my non-expert opinion, I have to agree.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

Agree also. I think they pasted the bottom half of someone else’s face onto Katy Perry’s eyes and nose. Weird ‘facial transplant’ effect.

    • andreawey

      It all seems wrong somehow…….

    • KateWo

Florence Welch would look fab in these clothes

    • http://CallMeJane.com/ CallMeJane

It’s like the stylist found a great wig and couldn’t wait to use it.  Every shot appears to be more about the hair than anything else.

    • Rand Ortega

I think her agency/management are trying on new persona’s for her because the “candy princess”, or whatever she’s called, is getting a bit tired & too young for her as she transitions into a (at least slightly) more mature demo. Photos look nothing like her. I don’t know if that’s good or bad.

    • kelsita421

Def thought it was Flo at first glace at the thumbnail… Odd and don’t get it!

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

She’s also totally VEDA in this editorial.

    • S_Swift

Not a fan of this shade of red on her.  I think the gowns are beautiful except the last one is a total Project Runway Home Depot challenge and someone went for the Hefty bags.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/J5QKZG5NFXQE3MLXFN3MAQDUTA Mary Stone

and the project runway home depot challenge contestant who went for the hefty bag made it look like cabretta leather with braided accents, unlike the corfam-looking mess in the last photo.

        Gurl, that’s not your hay-er..seriously!

    • kimmeister

Well, at least she still manages to look like she’s in her 20’s.

    • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

      50 Shades of Katy…

    • Pants_are_a_must

Pray tell me what is exactly Katy Perry’s “actual look”, because to me she’s a mannequin with an uncanny similarity to Zooey Deschanel. Every month she’s something else, and not consistently so like Gaga.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Also, I’m pretty sure Florence just wore the second outfit in her performance at the Reading festival.

    • http://opinionandamovie.blogspot.com/ Deitra S.

Well, perhaps this will serve as a visual aid to Flo re precisely how to wear her makeup and not look like a mortician school test subject.

    • MarissaLG

The only times Katy Perry looks good in magazines is when she doesn’t look at all like Katy Perry.

    • AthenaJ

These pics could be of anyone. Pretty, but boring. Flo has the ability to own this look because she’s got depth (and its just who she is). Katy should stick to her own schtick.

    • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

Wow she is completely unrecognisable – it is very strange that this is now a repeat occurrence.

    • marilyn

At least her hair color is normal.

    • guest2visits

OMG; this is the woman they tried to turn Goldie Hawn’s Private Benjamin into ! In Paris even !  IT’S THE MOVIE !

    • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

She needs to work with Vogue Korea

    • PeaceBang

Interesting. She doesn’t seem to be very into it, but it’s pretty enough. The really funny thing is that for some weird reason, the thumbnail of her in the mask looked just like Chewbacca for a second.

    • http://twitter.com/ZumaZoum Eric

It’s more a Florence meets Bjork-circa-Biophilia with that wig, especially in the 3rd photo.

    • Lisa

This is all a huge NO for me!

    • quiltrx

The first three pics, especially, are SO Flo.  She must have been busy.

    • rawrgrowlrawr

      Sansa Stark!

    • http://www.facebook.com/interplanet.janet1 Janet Smart

That last dress looks like it was made out of trash bags.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

That red hair looks like a really itchy wig.  Ugh.

    • lucasuk82

I agree the hair was a poor choice, but this might a personal best for her makeup.  She’s polished but not lacquered.
