Judging the Judges: Week 5

Posted on August 17, 2012

Otherwise known as The Week Everyone Gave Up And Dressed Like Michael. Actually, we like a lot about these looks. It’s just that everyone took it down a notch this week, for whatever reason. Maybe it was the whole “@Work” thing. Maybe Heidi thinks office workers wear tight pleather pants every day. We wouldn’t be a bit surprised.

Heidi Klum
Balenciaga Leggings. Ring by Wildlife by Heidi Klum.

Wildlife by Heidi Klum Cabochon & Crystal Duchess Ring

We like the idea more than the reality here. In other words, we like the shape of everything, but hate the color and fabric everything’s rendered in. And Heidi, bless her German heart, never did know how to wear jewelry appropriately. Too many large pieces fighting for attention. We dig the hair and makeup, though.

This Week’s Score: 3.75/5

Cumulative S10 Score: 3.3/5

Joanna Coles
Dress and Boots by Narciso Rodriguez.

Narciso Rodriguez Colorblock Mid-Calf Boot

We kinda thought the boots were a bit too cheeky a response to the dress in a too-matchy kind of way, but the more we look at this outfit, the more we really love it. It must have been hell wearing suede boots in an un-air-conditioned room in June, but the lady clearly made her commitment to looking put the hell together. But we tend to think this outfit is more suited for the real world than for television. We suspect it doesn’t photograph nearly as well as it looks in person. On TV, she looked a little washed out. A great, stylish, sharp look for her, though.

This Week’s Score: 4.25/5

Previous Guest Judge Scores:
Rachel Roy: 4/5
Hayden Pannetiere: 4/5
Krysten Ritter: 4.25/5
Dylan Lauren: 4/5
Lauren Graham:4/5
Pat Field: 4/5

Nina Garcia
Top by Calvin Klein. Leather skirt by Prada. Shoes by Tom Ford.

While this really would make an amazing work outfit – assuming you work at a fashion magazine – this doesn’t make the best TV outfit. Nina violated her own practice of wearing things with interest up near the face. This is a great outfit, but all the visual interest is below the waist. Love the shoes, but she’s gonna need to stand up for us to give a ruling on that belt, which looks a little questionable. As it is, we like the look, but it wasn’t televisually exciting. Score: 4/5.

This Week’s Score: 4/5

  • Joanna Coles FTW! Lovelovelove the matchy-ness of the dress and boots. LOVE!

    • HM3

Agreed! That color-blocking looks great on her.

    • H3ff

“When that dress came down the runway I thought it looked like two puppies wrestling in a sack.”

Joanna’s deadpan delivery had me in absolute stitches.

  • Listen up, Heidi.  You’re starting to look a little too harsh, m’dear.  You’re a beautiful woman nearing your 40’s and there’s not a thing wrong with that.  If you keep up this look, it’s going to rush right past sexy mama and headlong into desperate cougar (or has it already?).

    • fnarf

      It totally has already.

    • bellafigura1

Heidi needs to stop with the middle part — it’s a young girl’s look.  Her hair is just hanging, and she’s got beautiful tresses. Also, totes agree, she needs to move away from the edgy rocker thing (put childish toys away!) and embrace a little bit of a softer aesthetic. I’m still sad about that leopard print schmatta at the Macy’s promo thing.  Also may I say, she does not look very post-Seal fierce, she looks exhausted. Girl needs a gay. Whoda thunk it?!

      • meowing

I agree that the middle part looks past its prime on Heidi, but it looks good on Nina.  Is it just a face shape thing?  Looks quite harsh on Joanna, who very much needs a new style.  Always surprised at what a lovely skin tone Nina has.  My albino skin, I swear, bounces back the sun’s rays.  Maybe hers is helped along by a spray tan?

    • kschwarting

Harsh–that’s just the word I was thinking of–I don’t mind the hair so much, but her blush is bugging me.

    • She’s only 39, let her have her fun. Call her old some other time 🙂

  • tignor

how do we know the runway isn’t airconditioned? and if it’s not, why not?

  • Teddy Partridge

Blandest episode ever; blandest judging ever; blandest judges’ outfits ever.

    • bluefish

So with you — I had to catch the thing three times in a row over the course of a summer’s night insomnia.  Aside from Dmitry wit very very dull and snooze worthy — all the drama aside.

      • FloridaLlamaLover

I record the show and watch in AM when I can bum-rush through all the “drama”  — basically see what the challenge is, then jump to about mid-point of sewing, then jump to runway. Can’t take all the shrieking and caterwauling.

  • SewingSiren

Heidi looked cheap in the bandage dress in which you could see her bellybutton dimple. This one is just meh. The jewelry too spokes modelish.
Joanna-She liked Fabio’s dress because a woman of 60 could wear it.
Nina- I can’t tell much about this dress, but the jacket she wore to give the detail of the challenge was to short waisted for her.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

that jacket, nina’s for the challenge, was really weird too. & i dont mean in a good way. i mean the lapels, or whatever stood in for lapels. squishy, wandering lapels. i mean in that way.

for some reason i liked heidi’s second necklace, the off-center snake-thing. the enormous chain, oh heavens, could i live w/o that one–for forever & several mismatched days. she doesnt know it’s drug dealer jewelry, does she.

      edited to add:
not snake! SEAHORSE!! rhinestoned seahorse!! that means i have to look on ebay & see if i can buy it.

      • Pennymac

Okay, had to double scroll, but damn if it ain’t a flippin sea horse! With sparkles.

  • I think Heidi’s make up looks super aging this week. Dark eyeliner is a no.

    • I thought so too, she looked very harsh and not as bright and pretty as normal.  I also thought her hair looked fryed at the ends like she used a cheap flat iron or something.

      •  Agreed – too much dark around her eyes, combined with her angular features, made her look skeletal and ready for Halloween.

      • carolclark12

She’s obviously moisturizing her hair “at the wrong … at the wrong … at the wrong end!”

  • fnarf

No mention of Heidi’s ludicrous tighter-than-skin-tight outfit when she first came out? I swear if you slipped a penny up in there you’d have been able to read the date on it. From Mars. This pleather-and-silk outfit is positively sedate in comparison.

And none of these people have ever been within a thousand miles of ordinary officeworkers.

    • l_c_ann

This season we’ve learned that there’s “too tight” and then there’s “Heidi-tight”.  See her standing on the runway dress this episode and compare her anatomically with the Heidi-tight shiney green dress from the first episode.

  • rainwood1

Nina wins for me again.  She quietly outstaged her boss while not looking like that’s what she was trying to do.  The color set off her hair and skin beautifully.  Joanna’s dress looked a little too bunched up and wrinkled when she sat down, and the color did wash her out.  Heidi’s was just too Heidi in all the bad ways.

    • FlamingJune1967

I must agree.  From the waist up they both just had on white/cream tops.  Except Joanna’s looked dingy and did not complement her coloring while Nina’s looked perfect with her skin tone.  And I loved Nina’s skirt and shoes.  Really, I thought Nina won this little face-off  hands down!

  • rainwood1

And check the body language between Joanna and Nina, legs crossed in opposite directions.  Something tells me they aren’t close.

    • rab01

maybe, but … it makes sense for Joanna on the outside to cross her legs so that her foot is to the outside.  It also makes sense for Nina not to cross her legs so that her foot invades her boss’ personal space.

  • Guest

    Love Heidi’s shoes.

  • call_me_schmeg

    dutchess photobomb again. huzzah!

  • Anna Maria Diamanti

Often Heidi starts the episode with a great dress then fugs it up for the judging panel. This episode was no exception. Her judging panel outfit looks like something Bono would wear onstage in the 80s.

  • HM3

Wow. The Duchess had white pants on last week, and jeans this week! Fingers crossed for palazzo pants next…

    • LesYeuxHiboux

       And a turban!

      • dickylarue

I’m holding out for the Duchess to rock a simple tiara or the Donald Duck costume Elton John used to wear on stage in the 70’s.

  • Judy_S

“The Week Everyone Gave Up And Dressed Like Michael”–yes!
I was actually thinking about this weekly feature as I watched them all fading into the scenery. Though Kors looked particularly orange.  Perhaps he felt the need to provide a pop of color.

  • 3boysful

    I want Nina’s skirt.

  • CurbGirl

I’m thinking suede boots are more comfortable than skin tight leather pants. And anyway, leather pants are just so ‘one way monkey’.

  • Rand Ortega

Sorry, TLo. Joanna looks like she’s about to shag Matt Helm then, along w/ her diabolical karate kicking female cohorts dressed just like her, try to take over the world.
Nina looks fabulous. Though I’d like to get a better look at the shoes.
Heidi could’ve killed this look w/ just a teaspoon of bling or color.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yes, the ensemble Ann Margret wore in Matt Helm!!! I loved that.

    • bluefish

Matt Helm!!  This is the way to feel both young and old all at once.  Thank you, Rand Ortega!

      • Rand Ortega

I hit enter & realized the children aren’t going to know who that is. But as a kid I loved & still love those secret agent movies (Dino, James Coburn– “In Like Flint”– smokin’ hot!) & when I saw Joanna, Ann Margret from “Murderers Row” & the henchgirls from “The Ambushers” immediately popped into my head.

  • butterflysunita

I love Joanna Coles’s boots.  Fabulous!

    • kimmeister

I prefer the ones pictured separately that have the navy panel.  Awesome.

      •  Yes, the ones pictured separately are different, and I prefer them as well.  They have a navy panel and the white blocking on the front of the boot.  The ones Joanna is wearing have the white blocking on the back of the boot.

  • colleenjanel

From neck to waist, Nina’s outfit looks too Dress Barn. Bleh!

  • BrooklynBomber

Otherwise known as The Week Everyone Gave Up And Dressed Like Michael.
    Too funny.
I wish Heidi’s outfit each week would reflect the challenge. It never does. I just think it should.

    • MilaXX

I thought her glittery black dress came close.

  • out for a walk

Joanna looks pretty good, sure, but it is all so very bland. I vehemently disagree with her score tying Krysten Ritter’s for best guest judge.

  • call_me_schmeg

every time i see leather pants, i think about that episode of friends with ross and the leather pants.

    • Pennymac

The powder and lotion are making a paste!

  • Vickiefantastico

Are you serious? Joanna FTW? On anyone else, you’d be complaining about the matchy-ness and the fact that she’s wearing boots in July! Don’t get that one…

I agree on Nina and Heidi, though.

    • For me, the reason why Joanna’s matchy look works is because of the colors. Cream and black. Doesn’t come off looking dated and cheesy.

  • Candigirl1968

JC is too matchy matchy.  And it’s August.  Deserves a .25 to .5 deduction.

  • onetinkerbell

If those are, in fact, the Balenciaga leggings, they’re real leather, not faux. That’s a $1400 pair of leggings. At first I thought they were coated denim. But that makeup? No way. She looks older than me, and in reality she’s a couple years younger than me. Either she’s getting sun damage or they’re going too heavy with the bronzer.

  • Diane_Chambers

I LOVE Joanna’s boots.  Love love love.  In my imaginary life as a wealthy person, I would buy those suckers in a second.

  • librarygrrl64

I love* how Joanna Coles’s smile never quite reaches her eyes. The word “reptilian” comes to mind.

    (*am terrified by)

  • marilyn

I think that Heidi and Nina could learn something from Joanna.  Her hair is appropriate for her age, and looks really good on her.  She is not lost in some adolescent hair experience like Nina and Hiedi.  I think Heidi’s hair would look great in the same vague cut that she currently has, but chopped off much shorter, just below chin level and vaguely flipping out on the ends.  I think it would make her look younger.  Nina might do well with a short cut like Joanna’s in a darker (more natural) color.  I think it would take 10 years off of her.  Up close, Heidi and Nina look like awfully old teenagers, and it is not going to get better with time.

I don’t care about their clothes, because they are all totally drab and forgettable.  HOwever, Joanna should have not worn the boots.  That was a little costume-y.

    • mhleta

Horse hockey. I resent the notion that middle age must always be equated with short hair. Long hair can be really elegant on women of a certain age. Nina has a pretty steely personality. I think her long hair softens her in a much needed way. Joanna’s hair suits her not because of her age so much as the fact that she has fine features and baby fine hair. Nina wouldn’t  look so great with that hair cut.

  • Judy_J

When I look at Heidi, all I can see is her fried split-ends hair.  Get that girl some conditioner, STAT!

  • UptownNippy

I really like Ms Coles but she really should get some better undergarments.  Just a little perking and picking up of the girls would make a world of difference.  I love her hair.

I agree Nina’s hair should be a shorter style to go with her fantastic clothes style.

Heidi will always be Heidi and she should have on some spanx on too.    When you can see a woman’s belly button through her clothes something’s wrong.

    • CozyCat

It must be really hard for an ex (super?) model to admit she has to wear spanx.

  • bluefish

Heidi is Heidi — I don’t even know what that means really.  What drives me nuts is her voice when she does things like she did this past epi — Her voice when she calls out “Nina Garcia” just makes me cry inside.  It’s not the accent which is charming  — it’s the tone of her voice … Ugh.

Joanna Coles’ outfit didn’t even register.  Her hair and make-up looked awful. She needs to change up that blonde — way too aging.

    • alyce1213

      I know. N–i-i-i-i-n-a-a-h G-a-a-h-r-r-c-i-i-i-a (shrill).

      • dress_up_doll

And I thought it was just me. It really grates.

    • Rand Ortega

Absolutely. I immediately thought of how Oprah would introduce her really big get guests. Den-ZEL WAAAAA-SHIIIING-TONNNN!!!!!!
       Like fingernails on a chalkboard.

  • I at least give Heidi credit in that she not only talks the talk, she walks the walk.  It always seems to be about the sexy for her (Dmitry’s dress cutouts appropriate for work?  Really?).  If they issued a challenge to design an outfit for grandma’s funeral, she’d probably want to see sex appeal in it.  At any rate, she brings what appears to be her definition of sexy every time, and wears it like she means it.

  • MilaXX

Love Joanna’s entire look, but all 3 ladies need better hair do’s.

  • alyce1213

    Please do Tim Gunn!

  • SapphoPoet

Is that a seahorse around Heidi’s neck? I kind of like that. If she’d just worn the seahorse and the ring, that would have been sufficient. She needed to take about two-thirds of that jewelry off.

    • mhleta

I guess I’m in the minority in that I liked her look, but I agree about the jewelry. There’s a bit in the movie “LA Stories” where Marilu Henner’s character Trudi shares her wisdom on accessorizing: “One of the first things I always teach my clients is about the point system. You should never have more than seven things on. You know, like your earrings count for two points, those daisies count for three points. But the best thing to do is, right before you go out, look in the mirror and turn around real fast, and the first thing that catches your eye, get rid of it. I mean, I had this thing in my hair before I left, remember? And I pulled it right out, ’cause as soon as I turned, gone! Marilyn Monroe did that.” Good stuff.

  • guest2visits

I hate saying it, but Nina looked really nice again this week. I think Joanna’s was too matchy, but still ok.
And I actually thought Heidi looked great in her skin tight leathers, pleathers ? and all the jewelry too…it seemed to work for this
    outfit, anyway.

  • Call me Bee

I guess it was “Wear Leather to Work Day” for the gals.  Too bad MK didn’t get the memo.

  • cornpicker73

They don’t run the a/c in there? Cruel. I thought Heidi was especially Frau-like this week which I loved. EXPLAIN! THIS, THIS I HATE. love.

  • Heidi “Tell Me About It, Stud” Klum.

    • bluefish

Brilliant and hilarious!  So so so on target … Cuz my heart is set on you …

    • bluefish

Brilliant and hilarious!  So so so on target … Cuz my heart is set on you …

  • GorgeousThings

    Big ol’ yawn!
PS – I’ll take Joanna’s boots any day of the week over the other two. But I have bad feet and boots are my saviors.

  • l_c_ann

    Is Nina’s skirt fringed?

  • kikisayshi

I always wonder how/IF Nina and Joanna really do get along in the office. Wouldn’t you just love to be a fly on the wall (or a cover poster of a smokin’ hot model for that matter)?

    • bluefish

Wouldn’t it be kind of great if it were yet another case of “I fucking hate you!”  The mirror has two faces, etc.

    • bluefish

Wouldn’t it be kind of great if it were yet another case of “I fucking hate you!”  The mirror has two faces, etc.

  • Nina hit my trifecta: Klein, Prada, Ford. I am so jealous of her outfit that I can’t see straight. Joanna looks very cute. But it’s not the best look on her. For whatever reason, she does not look good in fashion forward looks. She always looks as if she should be in a black Chanel cocktail dress. And I don’t say that to be mean. I say that as someone who has the same problem.  Heidi looks like she just came from a meeting with her lawyer. And again, she is gorgeous. Her hair and make-up are fab. But she’s getting too old for leather pants. They only work for a short time. And her time for them has passed. When she decides to dress the body she has and not the body she used to have, it’s going to be glorious.

  • ASK26

I don’t like joanna’s dress. I really dislike the sleeves and the shoulders . I almost like the 1 by gunnar better

  • formerlyAnon

I really liked Coles’ dress-boots reverse-mirrored color blocking.

Ms. Klum’s shirt and one of the two necklaces would be a great start – some sleek, tailored slacks would have been ideal, IMO. I thought her shirt looked expensive and elegantly simple and the leather pants cheesy.

    No quibbles with the scoring.

  • RJay

I don’t like mid-calf boots on any legs.  No matter how fancy, slim, or chic, they remind me of galoshes.

But I do love Joanna’s hair.

    • ASK26

I was going back to post that I hated that kind of mid-calf boot

  • Do you guy’s take into account Nina and Heidi’s different needs when you judge them? Nina has to dress for sitting down and does an admirable job (though I’m not so raving enthusiastic about her outfits as you guys seem to be). Heidi has to look good standing and sitting though.

  • ccm800

HATE Coles hair (deep oil treatment dear)AND makeup….All bores – Nina for he win.

  • TomBord

Dear Joanna, that cut of cap sleeve gives u a big case of orangutan arm.  And Nina that white jacket, what the fuck was that contrived mess?

  • bellafigura1

You’d never catch Nina with nail art. Never.

  • LeoBloke

I’d love to see Tim’s outfits critiqued somewhere, and Judging the Judges seems as good a place as any. A lot more interesting than the Duchess of Orange, for sure.

    • mhleta

Tim is always impeccable. There’s not much else to say. He just always knows how to put himself together. Such an elegant gentleman.

  • ShamelessHWAddict

I kind of love Nina’s look.  Not for sitting on TV, but for work.  I tend to hate fringe in almost every application, but I think I like this skirt with the little layers of mini fringe.  Hate the belt.  Nina can do better than an animal print she stole from Heidi at the last minute.  She also wore a great white jacket for the intro for the challenge; something that would have looked sloppy sitting for the runway, but that looked great standing.

Joanna’s Narciso dress would look better if she were standing and if it were sleeveless. You can see the seaming details on the front, and I bet it looks great on her, but all of that is lost when she sits.  There is nothing technically wrong with the cap sleeves, but they are not the most flattering look.

I am really hoping that Heidi is wearing leather stretch pants, not pleather.  The Row had amazing leather stretch pants a few seasons ago, so I am hoping these are something like that.  There is no justification for pleather…ever.  Especially when you are a multimillionaire/supermodel.  Come on Heidi.  I will take short, shiny, and tight over these pants any day.

  • For me, Heidi just isn’t bringing it this season: compared to last season, she’s looking washed out and styled in the most nonchalant way.  Her painting is aging her, the hair needs something (that middle part doesn’t ALWAYS work), take off a few pieces of jewelry, and put on a different top.  I thought Ms. Coles was the best put together on the panel and even she wasn’t popping so loudly.  And for someone who goes on and on about color, Nina Garcia certainly didn’t have any of it in this episode.  They were all pretty boring.

  • littlemac8

I think Joanna’s went for the graphic and striking in dress and boots and agree with the idea the outfit probably looked better standing but still it draws the eye in a good way.  Her haircut is adorable!!  I think the all one shade blonde is too severe and she would look softer and prettier with lowlights and fuller eyebrows.

  • quiltrx

I bet it hurt when Nina had to peel her thighs off that chair.  I’m a bit disappointed in our goddess this time!

  • This week was kind of the week of questionable belts, apparently.

  • Sweetbetty

I know that’s what’s been reported but I agree with others who are skeptical about there being no way to AC the runway without sound interference in this day and age.  I’ve watched Letterman for years and have heard guests, crew, and audience members comment on how cold the theater is because Dave likes it that way.  I can’t believe that every TV set we see on various and sundry shows isn’t made comfortable for the people who work on it.  C’mon, Lifetime, cough up some bucks and get some state-of-the-art mechanicals on your set.

    •  David Letterman shoots in a TV studio. The Runway portion is shot at Parsons.

      • Sweetbetty

OK, that makes sense.  Is that area used for other things when PR isn’t in production?  Still, you’d think after all these years they could come up with some way to be able to make that area comfortable while taping.

        • Parsons is a school, so we would imagine the space is used quite heavily when PR isn’t shooting.

  • Meelah

    I don’t think Heidi gives a damn anymore….

    • Call me Bee

Seems that way.  Which is weird, because I know a lot of women with kids who divorced at about the same age, and most of them really stepped up their look after that.  Either they were so stifled while married and are ready for some new blood, or they just want to spread thier own wings.

  • Le_Sigh

LOVE Joanna Coles’ look – methinks its my favorite guest judge look so far. I’m such a sucker for good color-blockage.

    • mhleta

I’m not a fan of this color on her. The bone is very bleh with her skin tone. A bold necklace wouldn’t have been a bad thing here.

      • Le_Sigh

Fair point on her skin tone.  I think perhaps I loved the outfit so much, I pictured it on me instead of her 🙂

Agreed on a bold necklace – or if the bone shade was a skosh lighter – say a cream or a white, it would have looked good also.

  • Well even Heidi herself pretty much said the only office she’s ever been in was her attorney’s

  • carolclark12

I’m sure that’s on their bucket list.

  • Where’s Week 4?

  • Scarlet39

How on earth can Heidi looks so consistently bad at judging?   She very often wears very pretty dresses when she’s giving the designers the next challenge, but it all goes straight to hell on runway day.  The blouse she’s wearing is gorgeous, but the jewelry looks cheap (and there’s too much of it) and her hair looks positively fried.

Loved bot Joanna and Nina.  The boots are a bit much, but their gorgeous.

  • Susan Crawford

I loved Joanna’s hair! Great cut for her. She appeared a little washed-out, though, between the very blonde hair and the white top of her dress. A little blush, a touch of a peachy lip color – maybe a subtle earring with a dash of color? Overall, though, she nailed it.

Nina’s choices were pretty much invisible, I thought. Couldn’t see much of the skirt at all; the belt was only partially visible. But I did love those shoes. I want to raid Nina’s shoe closet, because she ALWAYS kills in that department.

Heidi, Heidi, Heidi. Heidi-Ho. The blouse was fine – would have loved it over a great pencil skirt or a pair of fabulous classic cigarette pants. But those miserable leggings (pleather? leather? naugahyde?) pants I can’t get with. And the jewelry? Heidi, if you actually designed these pieces, or even if you just signed off on them, I am here to tell you that jewelry design is NOT your metier.

    • Sweetbetty

Nina’s shoe closet is probably Marie (Mary) Clair’s.  Remember the episode where they had to design an outfit for Nina and the last step was for accessories at the magazine headquarters and there was a large table covered with jewelry for them to choose from.  I wonder if Nina has ever bought herself an article of clothing or an accessory since she’s been in her lofty positions in fashion magazines.

      • Susan Crawford

You’re right, of course. I’m sure 99.99% of what Nina wears to judge PR (and in real life) comes out of the Marie Claire closet. But shoe-wise, that must be a fabulous closet indeed. Shall we see if we can arrange a play-date there? How fun would THAT be?

I’m thinking about my favorite moment from “The Devil Wears Prada”, when Stanley Tucci’s character takes our frumpy heroine into the magazine’s incredible closet – LOVED that scene!

        • Sweetbetty

I’d forgotten about that but was thinking of the scene from TV’s SATC when Carrie is introduced to the shoe closet at Vogue magazine.

          • Susan Crawford

I never got into SATC, but man oh man, I would KILL for that experience!

  • bitterk

Heidi’s ring is incredible.  And she can work skinny leather pants like nobody’s business but the blouse and necklaces fell flat.  I am sure she would make a case for why that outfit would be appropriate for the supreme court.  The woman has NO sense of working women outside of fashion.  ZERO.  Joanna Coles and Nina get the punch line as does Michael.  Joanna was very work wear appropriate.  Nina was workwear appropriate for her job but she does seem to understand that women can’t wear cutouts in most professional jobs.
