Judging the Judges: Week 3

Posted on August 03, 2012

Hit it, ladies! We’re fixin’ to judge ya!

Heidi Klum in Thomas Wylde and Christian Louboutin

Christian Louboutin ‘Maggie’ Watersnake Pump

Y’know… we’re torn on this one. After the pajamas fiasco of last week, we appreciate the effort. And this is a pretty spectacular dress (although she looked naked when shot in closeup, which was probably the idea, now that we think about it). But it doesn’t seem to fit in the bust as well as it should and from full on, it’s managing to take away her shape. And that’s saying something, considering her shape. Hate the zipper, though. Love the shoes and love the hair, but the latter wouldn’t have been our choice to go with this dress. Still, she put the work in. She clearly saw that Nina was bringing it and decided to bring it her own damn self.

This Week’s Score: 4/5

Cumulative S10 Score: 3/5

Krysten Ritter in Michael Kors

Michael Kors Resort 2012 Collection

This is a fabulous dress and it looks great on her. To be honest, we were a little distracted by the neckline in closeups, but that’s a minor complaint. The shoes are matchy; sure, but we like the look as a whole and it really suits her.

This Week’s Score: 4.25/5

Previous Guest Judge Scores:
Dylan Lauren: 4/5
Lauren Graham:4/5
Pat Field: 4/5

Nina Garcia in Vionnet

Vionnet Resort 2012 Collection

We both love and sort-of-not-love this look. Love, because it’s sparkly and has lots of texture and visual interest to it, which is totally in the Garcia wheelhouse. Sort-of-not-love because it can be a bit too busy for television and we tend to like La Nina in either darker or more saturated colors. On television at least, this beige isn’t working to her best advantage. Still, it’s by far the most interesting and stylish look on the panel, once again. If nothing else, the shoes are KILLA.

This Week’s Score: 4.5/5

Cumulative S10 Score: 4.66/5

Once again, kicking ASS, La Nina.

  •  Heidi’s hair looked like it was slathered with super-glue. Not the biggest fan.

I was pleased with her dress though. She looks a tiny little bit happier, even. Glad to see it.

    • Sobaika

I always like it when she slicks her hair back – shows off her cheekbones. Not just-got-out-the-pool slick, but I like what she did here.

    • I liked it, too, on screen. Now that I know there’s a zipper on the waist I’m a bit put off, but she looked good, I think. If the hair had been a little looser, I think it would have worked, but it was so severe and stiff looking. Still, I agree that she looked good and had a nice smile.

      • Wendi126

Upon close-up that zipper looks to me like a very skinny belt

        • mhleta

          It is.

  • Joshau Norton

Heidi almost always looks like a chorus member of a bus-and-truck company of “Caberet”.

  • Nina needs to lift the girls up.

    • Anabag

Agree. Something about the way the dress fits is off or maybe it’s her posture.

    • GorgeousThings

I thought the same thing. I don’t know if it’s the drape of the dress, or just good ol’ gravity, but Nina needs to heed the line from The Devil Wears Prada (movie), “Always keep the girls pointing forward.”

    •  I think the girls are lifted, but the weight of the top is still dragging the fabric down.

    • JaneDC

Actually, Nina has said that she never wears a bra. I think it was two seasons ago when they had to design something for her. She may want to rethink that, um, position

  • T

To me, Nina always ages her outfits. It’s because of the disconnect between her “sassy” hair and the experience in her face. She could be really beautiful *and still hot* if she stopped dressing like a twenty-something and did something more elegant and classic with her hair. She reminds me of the Rodney Dangerfield joke where his wife claims she has the body of an eighteen-year-old and he says she should give it back because she’s getting it all wrinkled.

    • MilaXX

I think if she either changed the part or brought the hair up to her shoulders, it could open her face up a bit more.

      • if she changed the part, her hair might just go into shock and fall out!

    • texashistorian

I agree. If she changed her hair style, her *very expensive* clothes would look… well, expensive and elegant. With her boring hair, however, she always looks a bit disheveled and tired.

      • fashionablylate

Completely agree, I’ve never been a fan of that hair – it drags her whole look down.

    • aeg66

Exactly. I keep wanting to jus sit her in my besties chair (she’s a stylist) & give her deadhair look new life.

    • Call me Bee

So tired of the ratty long hair look. Especially on someone not 20 years old anymore. Nina’s hair looks awful. All split ends and thinning. Its a shame considering how beautiful she is, and how stylish she dresses.

Heidi? Cute dress but she needs to move past the strapless STS. This makes her looks so shortwaisted–with no waist! A black sparkly block on stilt legs.
      Gee I am crabby today…

  • call_me_schmeg

i *love* how smiley the duchess is in the last picture of nina. kors photo bomb!

    • funkypeanut

He does have that high-school-teacher-for-yearbook pose going on.

  • Nina’s dress would be much better without the junk on the skirt

    • norseofcourse

It looks like she has a lap full of “Nilla Wafers.

      • aeg66

I thought Necco wafers but yup…

    • MaryMitch

That dress does not have “hanger appeal”, but more than that – it’s ugly. UG. LY.

  • SewingSiren

I think the actress girl is strikingly beautiful, and would probably look good in just about anything. The Kors dress is no exception.
Nina always out classes Heidi, but at least Heidi’s  tight and shiny isn’t too short tonight.

    • YoungSally

But Heidi still deserves her own “Of course”

    • Shannon Chad

Eesh.  Every time I see that girl, I wonder how much head she had to give to get her ugly foot in the door.

  • elleg929

Maybe it’s because I am watching too much of the Olympics right now, but that dress is giving Krysten Ritter some swimmer’s shoulder, making her look broader than she is.  If the top were different, she would look great.

  • nerdy_TLo_fan

Ok, this is a little off topic, but the term “Cumulative Score” is bugging me. Surely a cumulative score, in W3 would be something like 12.5/15. What you’re providing is actually an Average Score, or perhaps a Cumulative Average.

    • SewingSiren

Here’s a little bug a boo I have. If you see a grammatical or mathematical error on the blog you should contact the hosts privately.

      • nerdy_TLo_fan

Sorry to have bugged you SewingSiren. I thought I would throw it to the group because its not exactly a black and white issue, and I thought the masses might perceive the issue differently and say that they liked the terminology.

    • Laylalola

      I love that you’ve named yourself “nerdy_TLo_fan.”

  • Funkykatt

I can’t see any plastic on the
    Christian Louboutin  shoes

  • hughman

It looks like Nina added some kind of gold belt which was a smart move because the original dress was kind of “potato sack-y”.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Not a fan of Heidi’s hair.  Let the hair be free, Heidi.  This way, it looks styled to fit under a wimple that you somehow forgot, along with 3/4 of the habit.

  • Improvement for Heidi, Nina looked great as usual (though not my favorite look), and Krysten Ritter’s look is nice too. But I can’t say too much because she’s on my “Irrational Celebrity Hate List,” so that’s clouding my assessment of her dress.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Heidi: Love the dress, hate the hair. Those shoes are giving me a headache. I’m over Louboutin. Overpriced and overrated.
Krysten: I like it all. She looks really good.
Nina: It may be a little busy, but she pulls it off. She’s the clear winner.

  • Judy_J

Nina has certainly set the standard, hasn’t she?  Heidi needs to step up her game.

  • BrooklynBomber

What i don’t get is how Heidi can go from pajamas last week to this.

    •  Mood swings? Although if I had Mood swings it would mean how much money I spent at Mood this week!

      • BrooklynBomber

    • formerlyAnon

Especially since in production time, the “weekly” runways were probably filmed no more than 48 hours apart. Possibly less.

    • funkypeanut

Someone in the costuming department must have it out for her.

      • BrooklynBomber

  • MoHub

Nina needs to start considering the advantages of wearing a bra.

    • I really think it’s the dress making them look so droopy.

      • Scarlet39

Could be, but if so, she should have chosen to wear something else.

    • MilaXX

Even A cups needs some support after a while.

      • MoHub

Heidi’s looking a bit saggy as well. She needs to re-establish her Victoria’s Secret connections.

        • MilaXX

or use the stuff she has in her closets.

  • I really like the Michael Kors dress on Krysten Ritter, but mostly I am relieved that she is wearing cute shoes, and not hideous bedazzled Birkenstocks like the poor model is wearing. What ARE those things?

    • Expensive Tevas with MK all over them, apparently.

    • MoHub

What’s nice is that she took what was essentially a sporty dress and got it to look more glam without being overly tarted up.

    • Spicytomato1

I know, I just posted the same thing without seeing this first. They look like semi-fancy river rafting shoes. Hideous is right.

  • I don’t like Nina’s outfit. Looks like she’s got a sequined napkin on her lap, and I think the sleeves are moving into dumpy territory. I think Krysten won, because Heidi looks square and shellacked.

  • I liked Heidi’s dress, but not the belt. I’m really not in love with what Louboutin has been doing with his shoes lately.

  • I think you are overly impressed with Nina’s uniform of structure tops with metallic bedazzling.  Take a walk down memory lane, and she wears virtually this same recipe almost all the time.

  • And apparently girlfriend thinks she can go without a bra still, and girlfriend is wrong.  Heidi’s girls should not be so close to her zipper.

  • crash1212

I wish somebody would wrassle Nina down and put a bra on her. I like the look, but the droops almost ruin it for me.

  • mjude

i didnt care for heidi’s look especially her makeup.

  • TSkot

I don’t see how a designer can ever take credit in making a dress like Heidi’s. It’s been done a thousand times and there’s nothing to it, at that.  A big yawn.

  • NDC_IPCentral

I found Heidi’s close-ish-up, seemingly unclothed, shots disconcerting.  I think you gentlemen have rightly determined that the nude impression was intentional.  Ah, so classy. Lifetime and Frau Klum.

Nina’s was a miss for me – busy, sort of all of a shade – the top, the hair, the makeup.  I am in agreement with some of the other BKs who find her hairdo to be not flattering and trying too hard to be too youthful.  A coif closer to shoulder (or dare I say chin) length would be a lot fresher and have more impact.

    • My complaints exactly.

Also, who ordained that accessories on ladies who frequent TV and the RC are apparently now verboten?  Would a pair of earrings or a bracelet detract from the borrowed clothing?  Come on, ladystars, lead the way to a bright and sparkly future!

  • Violina23

Nina’s dress looks good sitting down — not sure how I’d feel if she was standing! But the girl is smart enough to know that it doesn’t matter 😀

  • Scarlet39

I quite honestly had no idea who this guest judge is.  Although she’s pretty, the stifled laughter when Christopher was crying kind of turned me off about her.

    • Sweetbetty

I said this before but it bears repeating; the show is edited like crazy so her stifled laughter could have been a reaction to something entirely different that happened during the judging.  I’ve stopped putting any weight on the reactions shots or words spoken in the confessionals since they can be placed in any context the producers wish for the dramatic impact they crave so.

  • MilaXX

I didn’t like this on Nina. Even though she kinda nnoyed me I would have given the win to Krysten. I also notice a trend with the lady guest judges, unless they are paid to wear a dress, or have their own label, they tend to wear Michael Kors to sit on the panel. I guess it comes in handy in case they need a dress in the future , but it’s funny. I may start keeping a count of all the Kors garbed guest judges.

  • Spicytomato1

Hasn’t every guest judge worn Kors? Must be part of the deal. Thank goodness Ms. Ritter didn’t wear the shoes the model wore with that dress, WTF? I know it’s resort wear but somehow I don’t think whitewater rafting is among the favorite activities of people who actually buy from these collections.

    • kimmeister

Dylan Lauren didn’t wear Kors (understandably!).

  • No way. Nina’s dress looks like ass. This one goes to Krysten Ritter.

  • Heidi, Jen wants her beaded bath towel back.

  • dickylarue

The Duchess wins hands down every week & you all know it. If he wore a tiara one week I’d poop myself.

  • alyce1213

Ritter’s dress looks just like a Speedo swimsuit that I used to have (the stripes were yellow, not gold).
I feel you’re giving too many “fabulous-es” where not deserved, e.g., Kylie Minogue’s jacket, this dress.
It’s an okay, really-nothing-special dress – not even close to fabulous.Nina’s dress needed much editing.  Too much chaserai.Krysten Ritter is among the worst, most annoying judges PR has ever had.  Painfully not clever.

  • GorgeousThings

Are the guest judges contractually obligated to wear Michael Kors? They all do, except Pat Fields, of course. But no one tells Pat Fields how to dress!

  • Jangle57

Is it a pre-requisite that all guest judges wear Michael Kors?

  • I’ve decided that Krysten Ritter and I should be best friends.

  • butterflysunita

I love that Nina outshines a supermodel every week.

  • turtleemily

Are guest judges required and/or supplied a Michael Kors dress when they arrive on set?

  • Doesn’t Nina EVER wear her hair differently?  Waaaay beyond boring now….

  • I can’t see anything but Olympic swimmer suits when I look at Krysten Ritter’s dress.  Seriously, the neckline and the athletic-y stripes?  Is it just me?

  • kimmeister

I don’t like Nina’s shoes at all.  They are canklifying her.

  • annieanne

You guys must not have been watching the Olympic swimming this week. The bodice of Kristen’s dress looks just like the swimsuits the women are wearing — with a bit of gold edging.

    • alyce1213

I know. I commented earlier that I had that Speedo — in the mid ’80s.

  • Ksagun13

    I hate Heidi’s hair.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Loved Heidi’s look – head to toe.  But will Michael Kors ever wear anything besides his black shirt/pants combo?  I’d really like to see the Little Circus Peanut in a really dapper suit for once.

    • l_c_ann

Could the orange one look good in a well tailored jacket with a combed cotton custom fitted shirt?

I think marriage is agreeing with him a bit more (calorie-wise) that he expected and the ‘classic’ black tshirt does hide a multitude of figure faults.

    • Sweetbetty

He actually had light colored pants on this week.  He’s said frequently before in interviews that he dresses all in black because he’s such a busy man and it makes it easier to get dressed every day if he can just reach for black separates.  Bah!  There are plenty of people as busy or busier than him who manage to bring on a stylish look every day.  If all the busy women in the world followed his personal style he’d go out of business within a year.

      • formerlyAnon

Gotta admit I’m in sympathy with him. “Busyness” is maybe an oversimplification, but I know lots of women who DO have their work gear down to a uniform – two – three colors, based on big pieces in one neutral (sometimes varies by season), and an array of matching/coordinating accessories & minor pieces.

In his case, I suspect he’s also chosen to keep it unexciting because he doesn’t want how he’s dressed or how he looks to be a focal point.

        • Sweetbetty

If Kors would rotate among two or three colors I’d feel entirely different about him.  Most conservative menswear sticks to only a few neutrals anyhow.  But the black, black, black is, to me, just an affectation of his.

  • Judih1

Nina’s “hair rut” is driving me crazy.Unlike Anna Wintour who has a nice signature hair style, Nina’s hair is cocker spaniel. She needs to cut it or wear it up sometimes. Her bone structure and her age are better suited with a different style.

On another note, what credentials does Krysten Ritter have to warrant being a judge? Project Runway continues to sink to new low’s. That is why I don’t watch it anymore, I just read about it here – which is WAY MORE interesting and a better use of my time.

    • Teddy Partridge

I think probably the expectation was that Krysten Ritter would have been nominated for an Emmy the week before this episode aired.  But that did not happen, did it Bunim-Murray?  #fail

    • LP

Ritter used to be a fashion model, too.  Not that being a model qualifies you, but she isn’t just an actress.

  • Linderella

Funny, I think the Vionette dress is gorg standing up, but about 90% of the interest goes away sitting down.  I didn’t think it was a particularly flattering color on Nina.

  • msdamselfly

    Nina’s hair really bugs me

  • mom2ab

One small quibble on Nina’s dress- the heavy foofara on the bodice is making her bust very smushy and low.

  • guest2visits

How much nicer Heidi’s dress could have been with some straps or sleeves or even a halter.
Loved Nina’s dress on the model. Wasn’t bad on her either.
I just didn’t like the piping on Krysten’s, it was a very strange color on my screen last night.

  • ccm800

that little sitcom girl with the bangs was more than a little obnoxious. Dismissed.

  • formerlyAnon

Overall, I’d give no better than a tie with the guest judge to Ms. Garcia. I admit that a case can be made for Ms. Garcia to inch ahead based upon the [much more important] seated view since the fab shoes come to the forefront and the paillette apron effect is diminished.

  • unbornfawn

I don’t know that top makes Nina’s boobs droop down to her waist. The gals are OK at best this week. None of the girls really brought it.

  • Laylalola

Nah, Heidi this week. The shoes alone would have won it, but then there’s that amazing dress too.

  • H3ff

UGH, those sandals on the Michael Kors model. Dreadful.

    • LambeeBaby

Good golly they look like Brikenstocks! Bleh.

  • I felt like Nina’s dress made her boobs look droopy. Which they probably are not. But I like the look over all. I thought Heidi looked like a fembot. The hair, the dress, just too much for me.

    • Fordzo

Heidi looked like she belonged in a Robert Palmer video.

  • Does anyone wish just one time that Nina would try something else with her hair? Swept back into a low bun maybe? A ponytail? IDK- she always looks the same to me, though knowing her, she has a reason why she wears her hair a certain way and never deviates from that…. I applaud Heidi for at least always trying to look different, head to toe- keeps things interesting.  In his own way I find it almost chivalrous of MK for letting the ladies take center stage every week… though I highly doubt that is why he doesn’t change anything.

  • MightyMarshal

I gotta disagree and give it to Ritter. She’s rockin that dress and it has some interest by the face.

  • I have to disagree with you, boys.  Heidi’s hair was very unattractive to me.  Full face, she just looked weird, and not nearly as pretty as normal.  I thought you went a little low on Nina.  I would say a 4.75 at least!!

  • librarygrrl64

KILLA, indeed. Nina’s feet look like they’re being held hostage.

  • marilyn

    Why don’t you critique MK?

    • Sweetbetty

What can you say about a person who wears a black jacket, shirt, and pants (well, this week his pants were a light color) every single week?

      • l_c_ann

When Michael’s pants are a lighter color, that means they are an older pair that’s been washed or drycleaned a lot.

        • Sweetbetty

This week’s pants were nearly white, probably a very light khaki.

    •  What would be the point?

    • formerlyAnon

I’m sure one of the reasons he dresses as he does is that he doesn’t want what HE wears to be a point of interest.

  • mhleta

Heidi: I love the dress, but I agree that, from the front the dress diminishes her curves, which it doesn’t do from the side. She looks slamming from all angles other than head on and she’s definitely bringing it compared to the PMS sweat suit of last week. I can not get with the hair at all, though. It looks utterly laden with product, like she’s got some kind of nourishing mask made of mayonaise, honey and egg yolks waiting to be rinsed out so it can be properly styled. It makes me think of the Azar’s Big Boy trademark, which I’m sure is not at all what she was going for. I also suspect it would attract flies on a hot day. I’m neutral about the shoes, which is probably not a good thing.

  • mhleta

Kyrsten: On the model it looks like a swim dress, more sporty than elegant. It seems they added some length to it for Krysten and used a splashier fabric for the gold, all of which make the dress look more like a dress and less like a workout suit. I like it on her. She’s a phenomenal actress and loved her in Breaking Bad, but I think her skills are being wayy undervalued in the dopey sitcom she’s in right now.

  • mhleta

Nina has a no-bullshit personality which can come off as a bit humorless and dour. I agree with TLo, she looks better in color and with a touch of softness, (not too much) to offset her flinty gaze. This looks a bit like armor, heavy and straying into dumpy on top. Probably looks better standing up.

  • PeaceBang

Mmmm, I hate Nina’s shoes.  A lot. So shiny and tacky and just too much with the busy top. I feel like she’s in a rut. A gorgeous rut, but still a rut.

  • Fordzo

Does every non-designer guest judge wear Michael Kors?

  • margaret meyers

I really hate that wet hair-do on Heidi, and she uses it A LOT.  It makes her look pin-headed, and I hink it also makes her look thick-waisted. Mostly it just looks greasy and dirty.

  • Dear Nina Garcia: I want to be you when I grow up.

  • ZnSD

I think the fit on that Kors dress on Krysten is atrocious. Her boobs look absolutely as bad as poor Anya’s in that wretched brown dress…almost. BAD KORS, BAD!
