Jessica Chastain for YSL

Posted on August 21, 2012

We’re always saying that Jessica, lovely and talented as she is, can’t seem to take a good picture. It’s not a criticism. A lot of people look better on film or in person than in photographs. It’s just slightly unusual for one of those people to be a lead actress.

Well, shut our mouths.

She looks STUNNING.

Per WWD:

“Manifesto, the new Yves Saint Laurent women’s fragrance, “is a declaration of contemporary femininity,” said Stephan Bezy, international general manager of Yves Saint Laurent Beauté at L’Oréal. The scent is also meant to become a second YSL pillar worldwide beside Opium.

The fragrance’s print advertisement features actress Jessica Chastain with hands coated in paint (looking like elegant gloves). It was photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, and will come in formats including single and double pages. Bezy said Chastain “has the luminosity, charm, grace and power — the audacity, as well — to embody the fragrance.”

He added, “She’s really an Yves Saint Laurent woman.”

Sure, this picture is as Photoshopped as any beauty ad, but so are editorials and she’s rarely managed to work a lens as good as she does here. Honey, whoever the hair and makeup people were on this shoot, HIRE THEM.

She looks a bit too different, if you hadn’t mentioned the name I wouldn’t have known it was Jessica Chastain. It’s a good advert though.

    • marlie

She looks nothing like the Jessica Chastain from the red carpet, and I mean that in a good way! The hair and makeup are gorgeous. If she wants a red lip, it needs to be THIS red, forever and always.

      • TheOriginalLulu

Agreed. Nothing can throw your make-up off like the wrong lip color, particularly the wrong red.

    • kingderella

nine times out of then, i find perfume ads underwhelming. but this i love!

    • hughman

I give her props just for murdering Barney.

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Doh!  Thank you for the first laugh of the day!  You do a good service…

    • nannypoo

Who is this woman, and what has she done with Jessica Chastain? There is no resemblance at all.

    • Introspective

She often looks startled in her rc photos. Like shes utterly shocked that her pic is being taken despite wearing couture worth thousands.

And this in contrast looks like she was well prepped: styled and photoshopped with precision, to within an inch of her life even, hence the divine results. Instead of utterly shocked shes utterly arresting. I approve.

Bring back gloves!  Even if they are made out of wet purple paint.

      • Heather

I think that’s liquid latex. And someone on YSL’s art direction team is clearly very talented with using it…

    • kimmeister

      Even her hands look lovely.

    • Anathema_Device

She does look beautiful. As for the purple paint “gloves,” they look just like my dish-washing gloves, so “elegant” wasn’t the first word that came to mind.

    • MilaXX

I think the purple goes well with her red hair & coloring. Sure it’s probably photo-shopped to enhance that, but that’s a good use of the tech.

    • Joyce VG

      She looks like a mannequin.

      • AudreysMom

or at least those hands do. Kinds creepy.

    • Kim Brightman

    • MajorBedhead

That’s kind of a stunning ad. I love it.

    • Judy_J

She’s gorgeous! Love the paint-coated hands. Great counterpoint to the glam factor.

      • Lisa

I know – I’m slow, I did think they were gloves for a quick second.  This whole layout is just gorgeous, she looks amazing.

        • Susan Crawford

If I were in the glove business, I would definitely be looking into making gloves that mimic the dipped in paint look. And if someone in the glove business made them, I would buy a pair in every color.

    • Le_Sigh

Yay!  Foinally.  Love that blood-red lip on her.  She looks like a sexy vampire.

    • TieDye64

      Absolutely gorgeous.

    • makira mendez

To be honest, if I hadn’t looked at the hair (or seen the name at the top of the article) I would swear to it that she was Dianna Agron

    • guest2visits

She’s beautiful. The purple hands are such a simple but arresting visual effect.
No tribe of little masked men scaling the naked mountain.
I do wonder how celebs find stylists or make-up people; or if the stylists are the ones who decide who they will work with.

    • Susan Crawford

She really IS a YSL woman – she’s in the vein of those amazing muses and friends of Yves in his glory days: Mlle. de la Falaise; Pat Cleveland etc. Not pretty-pretty girls, but women with some real character. I would say she has always had the natural attributes in terms of fabulous bone structure, beautiful eyes, terrific hair and complexion. But it took the genius that is Mert and Marcus to help our Miss Jessica BRING IT!

(And I LOVE those purple-dipped hands – it must be great to be a celeb and have one’s hands dipped in gorgeous purple paint and know that some minion will rush up and tenderly apply a Kleenex should one’s nose start dripping. I simply don’t understand why I don’t have things like a styling team, a gaggle of minions, and Mert and Marcus following me around with their lighting team to ensure that I am always hitting my key light. It’s SO unfair.)

    • jilly_d

her hands look exquisite.  lovely ad.

    • Gabriella M

Mert and Marcus take excellent photos.

    • sk8tfan

And are those her own hands? Beautiful shape and length; maybe she can get a fall back job as a hand model.

      • TAGinMO

(…that is, as long as she remains Master of Her Domain.)

    • frankystein123

    • formerlyAnon

Arresting ad. If her eyes & eyebrows can look like that without [much] photoshop she needs to make it happen all the time. (those eyebrows are really good.)

    • BrooklynBomber

“Manifesto is a declaration of contemporary femininity.”
      Wow, that’s deep.

      • mayavaly

And that a perfume can capture that. Very impressive. I must get me some.

    • PeaceBang

She needs to gimme that lipstick! Beautiful ad. I love how they pulled her hands like taffy to make them look that long. Or maybe her fingers really ARE that long? What do I know?

    • kahluagal

Oh that lipstick!  I’ve started to scour the YSL site for details, but is there a ‘what the font’ type site just for makeup? I love T&L’s detailed sourcing of the clothes people wear but sometimes a girl’s gotta get the details on the makeup, too :(

    • Imasewsure

She looks pretty but still doesn’t quite cut it as a model to me in this picture… she needs to “smile with her eyes” or some sort of Tyra thing…. expression isn’t quite working

    • UptownNippy

      Her eyes have no expression

    • Scarlet39

Not that this has anything to do with the picture, but I just don’t like the name of the perfume.

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

      That is just lovely.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

      Great ad. Very inventive!

    • JuliaInBlack

Lovely!! First time I’ve ever glanced at a perfume ad and actually thought “well yes, I bet she DOES smell fantastic.”

    • jw_ny

      She looks lovely.

I’m always so critical of lipstick.  If one is going to go bold red lips, that’s the shade to use.  :)

    • cleep1000

      Unrecognizable, but gorgeous.

    • Phyllis Craine

      Miss Dita should style her
