James Marsden is DA MAN

Posted on August 09, 2012

Darlings, we can sense you’re all getting listless and unfocussed because your day has been boy-deficient. Allow us to remedy that.

James Marsden covers the August/September issue of DA MAN magazine photographed by Mitchell Nguyen McCormack and styled by Jeff Kim.

On 30 Rock and working with Tina Fey: “In my opinion, 30 Rock is a prime example of a show that is designed around the writing. The dialogue is incredibly well-crafted so it does not need to be tinkered with. That said, the show allows me plenty of creative latitude. They are always open to whatever extra contributions you might make to the dialogue or specific ideas. But I know my ideas better be funny or it won’t make the edit. The scenes between Tina and I are usually very playful and it is great to be on set with her. Comedy is so tough but when you work with the greats it just makes you better.”

On his personal style: “I think I can be a stylish person when I choose to be, but I usually don’t make that choice. Although, even with my basic style, I try not to look like a bum. Good jeans, good shoes, good watch. As a guy, that’s all you really need to concentrate on.”

On his workout regimen: “I usually run or bike to stay in shape. I don’t eat junk but I don’t have a strict diet either. I drink mostly water, go for a run 3-4 times a week, and eat moderately healthy. That’s pretty much it.”

Damn. He look GOOD.

He also looks much, much thinner than we remember him – and we remember him pretty thin to begin with. Someone’s been working out, it seems. “I don’t have a strict diet.” Girl, please.

And while we love the styling here and think he looks pretty hot, doesn’t a buttoned-up military-style shirt with hanging suspenders pretty much scream “neo-Nazi?” Kind of an odd choice there.

      Plaid suit. WANT.

      • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

I want to look like that in that plaid suit.  Unfortunately, I know what I would actually look like.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Sadly, I also would not be able to bring it like James does in that suit. I’m too short. Sigh.

      • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

I want what’s inside the plaid suit.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Well, there is that, also. Though he isn’t quite my style, so take him out of the suit, and leave it for me, while you have your wicked way with him.

          • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Sir, I do believe we have reached a deal.

      • SewingSiren

A plaid 3-piece suit with a plaid shirt looks surprisingly  good, doesn’t it?

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

In this case, a masterful pairing of plaids. Never something easy to. Pull off.

        • ballerinawithagun

          Yes, an amazingly good combination.

      • homofascist

        COVET the plaid suit!

      • TieDye64

        Plaid suit. *Drool*.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

James Marsden should not make duck face.  Also, is his hair on purpose?

      • http://twitter.com/ursny UrsNY

Agreed. Why didn’t they let him smile? He looks like a totally different person (Prince Edward) when he smiles.

    • EverybodysStarling

He looks like the hottest elf ever.

    • Anathema_Device

He forgot to credit the generous DNA he inherited. Lordy that man is hot.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/XAFAJ53QF3DLEFQB3WTLMRM75E MarinaB

Also whatever he does to get those arms.  It ain’t running, he’s not fooling anyone.

    • http://twitter.com/AbbottRabbit AbbottRabbit

If you’re not wearing a tie, young man, you UNBUTTON YOUR TOP BUTTON! (shakes fist, clutches pearls, shuffles back into house)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

Yeah, and he got those arms by “running a few times a week.” Girl, PLEASE indeed.

      He’s cute, though.

      • LauraWL

When men cross their arms and tuck their hands in it makes their biceps appear bigger, so I sorta don’t think his arms are as big as they want us to think they are… My husband is about his build and runs only a couple times a week. I blame good genes and a general ability to eat healthy and avoid junk easily. Hurumpf.

        • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Just what I was going to say.  The old “put your hands behinds your biceps” trick is one of the oldest ones in the book.

That being said, I’d hit it.

    • http://twitter.com/TheRealAndra Andra

      Prince Charming!

    • Sobaika

He seems to be confusing actual style with getting dressed.

And yes, he’s looking slimmer. I preferred the meatier X-Men version myself.

      • Kristin McNamara

Really? I guess the only thing I’ve seen him in is 27 Dresses (ha) and I was going to say he looked meatier here than I’d ever remembered him being….. and a quick peek at IMDB seems to, to my eyes at least, confirm that. Hmm…

        • Kristin McNamara

Then again, maybe it’s just my not being used to seeing him with short hair, which allows me to see his entire face haha IDK

          • Sobaika

The short hair definitely accentuates his cheekbones.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Oh he was Cyclops! Of course, I knew I knew the face from somewhere.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1183772509 Jen Hughes

I want to chew on his lips.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1183772509 Jen Hughes

Also the salt n’ pepper thing is WORKING for him. Men. Hmph. Not fair.

        • SassieCassy

idk some ladies can rock the silvery strands.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

SOME can indeed, and look fabulous and elegant. I had a professor in graduate school was was then in her late 30s with silver hair, which contrasted beautifully with her lovely olive skin. Gorgeous. I, on the other hand, do NOT look so elegant and get my roots done every 4 weeks and pluck and visible greys with tweezers.

            • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1183772509 Jen Hughes

               <—dyed redhead until I die.

            • Amy Ennis

You and me both. Dyed red til the very end.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1183772509 Jen Hughes

Agreed, but I am not one of them, so I will remain jealous. :) I will have crazy dyed red hair until I die. I”m okay with it.

          • rawrgrowlrawr

I have very, very dark brown hair with a gray streak in the front (think Stacey from What Not to Wear). I’m only 22, but I am a bit obsessed with my silvery strands as you put it. I tell hot nerd boys that I am Rogue. It works well.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/63F4DF4VDHSF2LPYOSWO5ZHAGU AdrienneD

Like spit his only exercise regime is running 3-4 times/week and a little cycling.  That grey t-shirt says otherwise.

Nonetheless, the man is visually compelling, a decent actor, has sticky-out elf ears, handsome, and rather dashing in the plaid suit.  Plus he compliments Tina Fey.  Therefore, I love the liar.

      • CozyCat

Yeah, it’s like those female super models who give their beauty tips:  “I just wash my face with soap and water and use a little sunscreen.  I think a woman looks best with a natural look.”

Hah hahhahhahhah (gasp for air) hahahah …..

    • Terence Ng

I love him so much, but hate his hair so much, too. It screams “Hi, I’m Trevor and I’m 9 years old and Mom just picked me up from the YMCA.”

    • Sara__B

LOVE that plaid suit on him.

    • hughman

      “Tomorrow belongs to me..” indeed.

      • SassieCassy

        props for cabaret ref!!!!

    • LesYeuxHiboux

That ensemble in the last photo is simply too fabulous. He is looking extremely angular here, it’s a bit startling. How they made James Marsden look like Vincent Van Gogh in that third shot, I will never understand. He’s one of those actors who really gets sold short in Hollywood: much like the girl who’s always the quippy best friend (Judy Greer), he’s always the jilted boyfriend. I’d love to see him get a shot at headlining an action movie. He was perfect as Cyclops and funny in Enchanted.

      • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

HE was Prince Charming?? Oh man. Maybe I need to watch that movie again. And not just to drool over Patrick Dempsey.

      • Imasewsure

Gotta agree about his career… I didn’t see the Disney thing but he always seems mis-cast even though he seems like a good actor, looks good, etc. Kinda looks like half the waterpolo team at Cal (Pepperdine, UCLA, etc) though so I guess he doesn’t really stand out all that much…

    • call_me_schmeg

where is my spoon because i could EAT HIM UP.

    • TheOriginalLulu

He’s a super-hottie. The baby blues get me every time.

    • MissAnnieRN

I don’t know what exactly it is about him, but I have a MAJOR crush on him.  You will all laugh when I tell you it started when I bought the movie “Hop” for my son this easter.  All day long I fantasized that I could be his completely normal girl-next-door girlfriend.  Thank you for making my day, TLo.

    • Rand Ortega

Le Sigh. He just drips delicious.

    • mjude

he is a pretty boy for sure & would fit nicely on my shelf with my bingbing doll.

    • Srw27

      I’d hit it :)

    • trisker

I think his upper body belies the claim “I run 3 or 4 times a week and that’s pretty much it.”

    • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

      DAYUM.  That is all.

    • Pants_are_a_must

He cheekbones could be seen from space. And I’m not sure that’s such a good thing.

    • fungstyle

I think it’s the hair cut making him look different. I actually think he looks like he’s filled out a bit

      • Kristin McNamara

        That’s what I thought too!

    • Call me Bee

Yeah–we here in Milwaukee are a little sensitive about neo-Nazis right now…
But–he looks good in all the looks here.  Love a guy in a navy pea coat with a high collor.  Love!

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/N4N72OML3I5N223JAZDFPFC2UE La Gatta, Feline of Destructio

Second to last photo: Why Mr. Marsden, are you looking at my cupcakes?

      • LinXGUA

Yes, he is! My eyes are up here, sir.

    • http://twitter.com/ViolaZuppa ViolaZuppa

He’s an attractive man, but I can’t seem to really appreciate it.  When I see his name I’m always hoping to see James MarsTERS instead of MarsDEN.    That Spike love is hard to combat.

      • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Heh. I said the same thing down there a couple of comments.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

        Me too!

    • Isana Leshchinskaya

saw him at the tony awards gala. he’s even thinner in person. very skinny man.

    • MilaXX

can’t say he was ever on my radar, but he looks good! Homeboy cleans up real nice.

    • http://twitter.com/MajorBedhead MajorBedhead

Holy shit. You could slice tomatoes with his cheekbones. Da-yum. *fans face*

I got all excited for a sec, thinking this was going to be a James Marsters layout, but this did not disappoint. Not even a little.

      • Amy Ennis

I had the same heart palpitation. But Marsden works, too, I suppose.

    • butter nut

he doesn’t usually do it for me, but he’s lookin’ pretty good here – even in his oi boy outfit.  and i agree – girl’s lost at least 10lbs since last season of 30 rock.  who he foolin’?

    • formerlyAnon

He’s got a face made for long hair.

Plaid suit + plaid shirt is nice. The colors in the shirt impress me no end. How DO people do these mixy matchy things and make everything look good in the end? I have not the skill.

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

He’s not normally one of my “favorites,” but DAMN if he doesn’t look fantastic in that plaid suit!

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

So happy to see plaid suits getting some love.

    • pookiesmom

He looks great, but you don’t get those biceps from running. 3-4 times a week my ass. (Or, my ass wishes that would come from running 3-4 times a week.)

    • Jess5628

Wow, I don’t remember him being that hot. Nice job him and his “running.”

    • Jenna621

Agreed; he looks incredible. I love him anyways but these photos are above and beyond. Pitter patter goes my teenage-girl heart.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

This is the best I’ve seen Jimmy look in a long time (although shirts buttoned to the neck without a tie will always look wrong to me).

    • sleepycat

please send him to my dressing room. please and thank you

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maya-KC/537771651 Maya KC

I can never quite forgive him for being Cyclops.

    • kmk05

‘Neo-Nazi’ or ‘I-could-have-been-Captain-America-too-okay’. Love those eyes and those cheekbones!

    • sashaychante

Sooooo handsome.  Hope his buzz cut is for a role. I like his hair longer, like he wears it on 30 Rock.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

      Um, YES please!!

    • Little_Olive

Are the stuck-out ears a thing now? All the models have them…

    • Squarah

Serving up Guy Pearce cheekbones. Do want!

      • AnneElliot

I’ve always wished he’d star in a movie as Guy Pearce’s little brother.  I’d love to see both of them on the same screen.

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

“Good jeans, good shoes, good watch. As a guy, that’s all you really need to concentrate on.”
Of course, the cheekbones and the lips don’t hurt.

    • AuntieAnonny

Terrible photography, looks like the crap friends would put in their facebook “model portfolio”.

      What a babe, however.

    • snarkykitten

He will always be whiny!Cyclops to me.

    • librarygrrl64

      Hair: too short. :-(

      • formerlyAnon

         Agreed.

        • dharmabum8

          Same.

    • Lisa Dugan

Hate the military shirt and suspenders but the last two shots are Gorgeous!

    • donkeygospel6

James Marsden has always been the kinda guy you swallow. These photos do not change that.

    • Trisha26

Do not like the hair at all – mental patient-chic. Do not like the buttoned up shirt look – makes me go all SLINGBLADE.

    • AnaRoW

I never really understood his appeal until I heard him sing.  It doesn’t look to me like he does more than he’s saying. He’s slim but doesn’t have a lot of muscle definition.  He could easily maintain that with running and diet.

    • quiltrx

He doesn’t really do much for me in general.  I do like the last 2 pics.  Especially the next to last…he looks like the anti-hero in an old French movie.

    • kikisayshi

      Yes. Please.

    • frankystein123

Ouch, I think I just got cut by his cheekbones.

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

He needs to be in my bed NOW.

    • http://twitter.com/TheSnickleboom Snickleboom

He’s alright.  He’s no Chris Evans, tho ;)

    • Truly_Outrageous

He looks like a freakin model in the black and white picture. Or is that an instant effect when a photo is in black and white? Anyways, the comment about his diet was kinda funny. But the response “girl please” was funnier.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/FEP56YB4DUIXBWSLIMSSSGQHWY jimmack

He looks great with the short hair. Some guys can really carry off a simple grey t-shirt. I wish I was one of them.

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/FEP56YB4DUIXBWSLIMSSSGQHWY jimmack

Racing you to the store right now for that suit.

    • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

he never did much for me, but this is indeed a nice shoot. love the clash of plaids, and both suspender shots.

    • Alyson Epstein

“I try not to look like a bum”  If only more people would hold this philosophy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Cleary/1201575213 Patrick Cleary

I love the “I just do a bit of yoga and eat things that aren’t too bad for me” thing that stars insist on saying. I suppose it keeps the rest of us hoping that we can do the same without chefs/caterers and personal trainers on staff to take care of us.

    • Nithya Subramanian

      Yum.

    • kolokOlchik

      He is deliciously beautiful!

    • taylormade7

I saw him at brunch a couple of months ago and was shocked by how tiny he was.  He really needed to eat more banana pancakes and corn beef hash.  Maybe it’s for a role?

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

He’s always been yummy.  He’s aging well.  Maybe another John Stamos.  :)

    • amf0001

He kind of reminds me of Ethan Hawke

    • fursa_saida

I like him better when he’s got a bit more hair.

ETA: It just hit me: some of the styling here is making him look like Captain Jack Harkness’s little brother. How’s THAT for a nerd reference?

    • http://janeaustensworld.wordpress.com/ Vic

He and his wife split in October. For many, the stress of divorce will take the weight right off you without dieting. I like him better with more hair.

    • DesertDweller79

Yeah, a couple of the photos do look a little too “military” verging towards “neo-Nazi”.  But, overall I like it.  I really like some of the other photos.  He looks really good.
