In or Out: Yvonne Strahovski

Posted on August 01, 2012

We think this look is kind of adorable, but we go back and forth on whether it comes off a bit fussy and retro (in a bad way).

Yvonne Strahovski attends 2012 TCA Summer Tour – CBS, Showtime and The CW Party.

She must have been lowered in by helicopter because that satin-y skirt is remarkably unwrinkled. We have a long-running joke that some smart entrepreneur should buy a bunch of those traveling horse stalls and charge top dollar to transport ladystars to events unwruffled and unwrinkled. We just love the idea of someone traveling down a freeway and seeing Nicole Kidman standing up inside a horse trailer wearing a Marchesa gown and holding her hair in place.

But the skirt’s kind of overly fussy in a way it didn’t need to be. And that very high collar is making us sweat. There’s a bit of a disconnect between the casual hair and the fussyfussy outfit. And we’re really trying to refrain from the over-used “pop of color” suggestion, but we think black pumps actually bring this outfit down. Silver sandals, maybe? Red peeptoes? Blue ankle straps? Either way, those shoes take the look from fussy to funereal.

But then we pull back, look at the whole thing and say again, “Hunh. Still kind of adorable.” Kittens make the call:

Vote Now!

IN! This is all working for me! Adorable!

OUT! Betty Draper called. She thinks you look a little prissy.

Kranky Kittens were Kranky yesterday, and y’all voted both Rachel Bilson’s banquet hall manager look and Jaime King’s weird underboob patches OUT.

Maybe a scoonch fussy, but no way this is not an IN.

IN IN IN. She looks fabulous.

  • ThaliaMenninger

    Definitely working for me. IN.

  • Goin’ with an Out here.  Way too many elements in that dress for me taste. Mostly its the placement of those rather unfortunate flower details that kills it for me.

    • Kellie Joy Goodlet

Agree. Fussy flowers are an automatic OUT for me.

      • Cathy S

I agree. I thought it was cute except for those flowers. Out.

      • Spicytomato1

Flowers? I thought they were giant buttons. Also an automatic out, though.

        • andreawey

Ha Ha I thought they were giant buttons too! The turtleneck is awful too….

    • See now, I thought I liked this until you pointed out that there are giant things attached to the front of the dress.  I thought they were just the sweet little sparkly bits, but upon a second viewing – yep, giant flowers or buttons or something.  Strange and much less cute.

  • sockandaphone

IN. The high neck is kinda bothersome but overall she looks very pretty. Maybe a different hair/makeup style.

  • OUT.

    Not feeling the dress.

  • j_anson

I do hate those shoes. Still, definitely in. She’s cute!

  • quiltrx

IN.  I think it’s really cute.  I don’t know what hair would work other than an updo with that neckline, but a neater one would have been better.

  • allj

I don’t adore the skirt, but I think it’s still adorable. IN!

  • OUT. Whats with the turtlenecks?  I think the flowers look crafty and without them the dress is just blah.  Lighten up sweetie, it’s only August.

  • lizajane1776

In. Even though there is an element too many in the skirt, the rest is wonderful.

  • Wrenaria

Cute enough for me! Sarah Walker gets an IN from me!

  • IN and I love it, but I worry about that high neckline overheating her.

  • BazoDee

    IN!!! Without a doubt in!!

  • The whole is more than the sum of its parts, IN for me. (as a side note, knowing her from “Chuck”, she probably did helicopter in to the venue..she’s bada$$ that way)

    • Or maybe it´s that I still love Sarah Walker… If I do break it into the parts, I´d take the last lower flower out, change the skirt to pencil, and go with maybe gray or pewter sandals, not too delicate though. Love the hair and makeup; the dress is just too fussy to add heavy anything else.

    • H3ff

Miranda Lawson will always get an in from me!

  • Ryan Williamson

Hideous. The style is way to twee to be done in black. And satin is just awful anytime. It might have worked in a different colour. All the black is funereal. Her hair looks awful.

  • It’s…okay.

    Half-hearted IN.

  • Sara__B

Pretty lady, but the dress is too fussy, the silhouette is not particularly flattering, and the styling is wrong, especially those heavy shoes. OUT.

  • MilaXX

IN, I wish she had worn her hair down to make it a little less prom-y, but otherwise I think it works.

  • tereliz

The sad shoes and even sadder rosettes are killing it for me.

  • PeggyOC

In.  Fussy, but not overly so, and saved by sleek hair and simple shoes.  She’s an in.

  • I just can’t decide if it’s IN or OUT. Someone please help me make up my mind!

    •  I feel the same way. Cannot decide!

  • That’s a hell of a funeral.

  • Diane_G

If she’s going to wear her hair up, it needs to be perfect and NOT YOGA HAIR. Look at the Olympic gymnasts with nary a lock out of place, and learn.

    • twocee

Oooo…I disagree.  I look at the gymnasts hair and wince every time.  The sheer number of barrettes each one wears must alter their center of gravity.

      • sagecreek

Same here! I spent all evening thinking, “can’t one of you just go with a short do?”

        • Diane_G

Oh, I’m not saying she needs to wear fifty barrettes in her hair..just no flyaways, please.

  • Imasewsure

No opinion on the outfit but I love the celebrity horse trailer idea!!

    • Spicytomato1

Yes, I might actually pay to see a trailer of upright celebs in their wrinkle-free gowns.

  • Allyson Wells

OUT for sure… the top would look way better without those flowers, and the skirt without the pleats. I actually like the hair up like that with the high-neck top, but the shoes are too heavy and dull. Sorry, Yvonne. Excited to see you on Dexter though!

  • In_Stitches

The hair is kind of half-assed, no?  And the skirt, well, it’s unnecessarily weird, but the shape is nice and I like the bodice overlay, but in black the whole thing kind of reads lazy.  I’m going back and forth on this one…IN?

  • myangelic1

IMO, this a “Girl, this is not your dress.” look.  The dress is lovely.  And she looks lovely.  But there is just something about the entire look, esp the high neck and whatever was glued to the front, that is not working for me.  Different shoes would not have saved this.

  • eeeerrrr….ummmm….out

  • NCDFan

  • nannypoo

I hate it. The skirt is odd and those mushroom thingies are just stupid. Also hate the shoes. I wonder who she is. Off to google.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m just loving the image of a ladystar being transported via horsestall!

  • phrenk

How lovely she looks is trying to sway me, but while I like the top of it from far away (but then not in close-up), I hate the skirt always.  And the shoes, blergh.  OUT.

  • somedaysunday

In! Minus the shoes and one layer of collar.

  • PinkLemon

OUT. She looks like the office receptionist at the Christmas party.

  • jennifervney

Out. Something’s just not working for me with that dress and that hair.

  • Out. This dress screams “Macy’s sale rack” to me.

  • AmeliaEve

I actually like the rosettes, but the skirt is killing me. That big box pleat in the middle violates the overall frou-frou mood of the dress. A drapey skirt, or lots of tiny pleats, but not this. Add in the stranglingly high collar and I gotta give it an OUT even though she looks pretty and happy overall.

  • Sorry. She’s cute, but this is an OUT.  That dress is…unfortunate. The silhouette is great, it fits her great, but the fussy flowers on the bodice and the weirdness of the skirt–unflattering pleats, too shiny, and what is that weird drapey thingie at the side?

And the shoes–how about a pretty metallic sandal to give just a little interest, some color in a clutch, maybe a pretty piece of jewelry?  Anything…SOMETHING???

    An OUT.

  • IN!

  • It’s…okay? I like the dress, but not for summer. And those Minnie Mouse pumps have got to go.

I guess I can give it an IN, but it would be a much more enthusiastic IN in December.

  • Joyce VG

I really love the top but the bottom is kinda heavy and overworked.  She’s so lovely though. IN.

  • alyce1213

IN. The dress is wacky and adorable.  Love her little bun.

  • I think if the skirt were not shiny satin, it would be much better.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Fleurchons made by Angela of Jubilee Jumbles.

  • newleaf1

Platform pumps have got to go.  They just look like hooves.

  • kimmeister

In, she looks adorable!  I’m glad she has no garish makeup colors too.

  • G

OUT.  I hate those “flowers”, the high neck and the satiny skirt.. which do not say summer, but winter..and those dreary pumps.  OUT again.

  • Jangle57

No, something is off here though I can’t put my finger on it.  OUT

  • IMNAngryLiberal

OUT – and what is it with all of the dark, fussy looks on the RC this summer?  It’s hot, right?  I mean, she looks a bit moist in the close-up.  If you live up here in the PNW, maybe a black turtleneck dress is appropriate summer attire, but anywhere else, not so much.

  • teensmom99

She looks great so it’s an IN.  But wut it’s not a WERQ for all the reasons cited by my daughter’s gay uncles.

  • Nicole Kidman in the horse trailer! I will think of that in times of trouble to get me through. Thanks for the great laugh to start my day.

  • rissa42210

Out.  The fussyness makes it look cheap and ill-fitting.

  • NDC_IPCentral

I’m in the OUT camp.  That faux turtleneck is choking me from afar, and you’re absolutely right, gentlemen, too, too much going on.  If the designer had dialed back (a lot) the result would have been a lot more appealing.

  • MarissaLG

IN! I can’t see a thing wrong with it.

  • butterflysunita

OUT.  And that high neck in mid-summer is just wrong.

  • sashaychante

OUT Clunky, ugly shoes, yoga hair, and high neckline all add up to a big out-arama.

  • belfebe

I give her a narrow IN.  I think it’s the shoes that bring the look down.  Silver pumps or sandals would have changed the look dramatically.

  • Tamara Hogan

I’d like the dress better without the flowers on the bodice, but definitely an IN for me.

  • OUT

  • It’s still summer right? OUT.

  • I’m gonna call this a guarded IN.  If she had a Betty Draper hairstyle here, it might have looked better.  And is it me, or does she look like Gwen Stefani?

  • In.

  • Wellworn

IN.  I love the dress, it’s very cute.  I think the hair is perfect, that neckline demands an updo.  I do agree that silver shoes would have worked better.

  • Larkin21

She is such a beautiful woman but that dress really is too fussy. OUT.

  • Dan_In_NYC

I am reminded of “fleurchons” from PR seasons past.  I don’t LOVE this, but she gets an IN from me.

  • marilyn

Barely IN.  She is well put together and the black masks how busy the skirt is.

  • The only thing I’m not a fan of here is the ultrahigh neckline.  In!

  • formerlyAnon

In. I’m exactly with the feeling of “too much, not right – but ‘[s]till kind of adorable’ ” you fellas express.

  • CheriCPat

Yes, there could have been better shoes, but the question isn’t “is this perfect”, just “is this in”.  This is pretty, fits well, is interesting, is appropriate, and her makeup is right and her hair and shoes are acceptable, and there is nothing hoochie going on, so it’s an IN.

  • Judy_J

I thought the bodice was busier than the skirt.  And that high neckline just adds to the fussiness.  Still, I like the overall silhouette, so IN, but just by a hair.

  • EEKstl

OUT.  If I could vote for only part of the look I’d say IN for the design of the top, which is fabulous.  If the dress had been that sheer, crepe-y fabric not only on the underbodice but the skirt as well it would have been a home run design-wise.  The satin is just too much, too fussy, mixed metaphors, etc.  I also agree the shoes could have used more color but that’s the least of her issues.  Hair is a mess; I agree with the updo, but this looks like she quickly pinned it up to get it out of her face on her way to Ralph’s.

  • altalinda

    Out.  Boring.

  • DaveUWSNYC

From a distance they look like big black buttons…out.

  • TSkot

The whole is greater than the sum of the parts: IN

  • filmcricket

Sigh. It pains me to say this, because I LOVE her, but Out. The skirt really doesn’t work with the bodice, but what tipped it for me was the shot of the back – it looks so cheap and unfinished. Surely there had to be another way to achieve the same effect from the front. Sorry Yvonne. You’re still my #2 girlcrush, though!

  • out. meh.

  • jw_ny

Dress..only major complaint is the bulky collar.  Her makeup is very pretty.  Hair…just so so.

  • l_c_ann

That collar is not for the summer season and her chest looks too low and too constrained.

  • PeaceBang

She looks pretty and happy and totally owning the fussiness. Big IN for me, even though the hair is a disappointment.

  • In. She looks gorgeous.

  • pookiesmom

The high neck gives me hives, but this is so very IN. I think she looks fab.

  • Vickiefantastico

IN. I think she’s a cute as a button! The high neck is not for me, but it works on her.

  • CYVH9000

OUT. It’s a shame too because she’s so pretty. Why all black?

  • greyhoundgirl

OUT  Too, too much happening here.

  • deliadee

A bit fussy but I like the retro vibe.  In.

  • AuntieAnonny

    It’s tacky. OUT.

  • Hate what’s going on in the top half of the dress. It’s way too busy. It would have looked better with either the rosette detail OR the pleating. Not both. Edit, please.

  • Fantastic dress. IN. But yes, the hair could be a bit neater.

  • MissMariRose

  • margaret meyers

IN.  A really great summertime dress.

  • Snailstsichr

I find the flowers creepy. OUT

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I like it.  It helps that her makeup is perfection and she’s a beautiful looking girl.  I say IN.

  • jjfg

She does seem to be pulling it off… But I hate the dress.  It’s just a big mess o’ fussy.  OUT

  • In! Blondes in black, always good.

  • turtleemily

She looks great, so definitely an in, but there’s too much going on with the skirt and the shoes are too heavy.

  • A tepid Out. I don’t hate it but the dress needs editing.

  • Synnamin

    In! Love it!

  • LongTall_Sally

IN, but I hate the shoes.

  • bittykitty

out! out! my eyes, i can’t with the… all of it.

  • oohsparkley!

In. Boring maybe, but she looks good. In.

  • AWS

  • Adorable, and I love retro-cute. IN.

  • Out. Way too fussy for the summer.

  • Horse trailer is a great idea but surely a line of pope-mobiles would be the way to go.

  • FAB. U. LOUS. That is all.

  • AngelaGreen

    In!  Long live Sarah Walker!

  • another_laura

Out for the fussy skirt and because this girl doesn’t look good in black and because I hate satin, now.

  • littlemac8

    IN – She’s cute as a button!

  • mila_8

  • plinkiedoodle

    Love it!

  • In, she does look adorable.

  • demidaemon

OUT. I hate the notions on the bodice, and it is all a bit underwhelming.

  • LambeeBaby

In. Its an odd combination but it works.

  • zingit

Sarah Walker can do no wrong.

  • Ksagun13

I hate to say it, but I give it an OUT — too fussy, and I agree the neckline makes me itchy just looking at it.  Now I need to go hide so Sarah Walker doesn’t come kick my ass.

  • aristida_girl

    IN, love it <3

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i dont know who she is, apologies, but she looks pretty.

  • The majority of the time I’ve seen Yvonne in the last year, it’s been with black hair and white scaled body armor. This just really throws me off by comparison! I don’t think I like the choking neck bit, but the rest of it is cute.

  • StrandedFashionista

Major OUT. I hate the flowers on the bodice.

  • guest2visits

The top half of the dress is fun and pretty; but the bottom doesn’t go with it very well.
Especially the extra pleats; just sort of hanging there. The back also looks like it’s coming apart.
I was disappointed the sheer materials didn’t continue in some way, the length of the dress.
She’s very pretty, but not a great dress.

  • Ruth Preston

A little more attention to hair and makeup (you only had enough mascara for that one eyelash? Honey), and this would be a lovely late-October look. As it is now, in late summer? Frazzled restaurant hostess.

  • Holly Kinnamont

I like this look and I love HER. Go Yvonne. Looking radiant as always.

Every time Sarah Walker shows up on TLo I squeal. I miss Chuck so much.

  • RzYoung

IN just because the word ‘unwuffled’ appears 😉

  • Beardslee

out.  too much of a muchness.

  • mjude

  • CatherineRhodes

  • librarygrrl64

I think it’s adorable and the sheerness makes the high neckline okay for me. The shoes are a boring choice, but still an IN for me.

  • OUT. Don’t like the bodice – way too fussy.

  • BayTampaBay

    IN!  Love the top.

  • OUT! it’s sister-wife goes to a funeral meets powerbitch-at-cocktails.

  • In. Super cute.

  • lchopalong

Out. It just rubs me the wrong way.

  • I love the dress–but for fall. The high collar and the satin make me think it’s a cooler weather dress.

  • melanie0866

It’s August.  Not time for high necks and black satin.
