In or Out: Miranda Cosgrove in Juicy Couture & Carven

Posted on August 16, 2012

Somebody tried to do some clever pairing here, but we question whether it works.

Miranda Cosgrove attends CBS’ Teacher’s Rock Special Live Concert Press Room in Los Angeles, California in Juicy Couture plaid sleeveless top with a black leather circle skirt by Carven. Shoes by Sergio Rossi. Bangles by Loree Rodkin.

Juicy Couture Eton Plaid Top

At first glance, we were all “Ooooh. Edgy schoolgirl!” Sure, it’s not the most original persona to try on (although it’s perfect for an event called “Teachers Rock!” we suppose), but we liked what we were seeing here so we took a closer look. It almost works. We really love that top and we like the idea of pairing it with a leather skirt to give it some bite. But that top is simply too long for that style of skirt and it looks a little awkward. The proportions are off. You could take an inch or two off the bottom and it would be fine with this skirt, or you could wear it as is with a pencil skirt; either option would look better than this. Other random bitches: too much gold jewelry and gold accents. Clearly, someone though the gold in the collar needed to be followed through on, but those shoes belong with a totally different outfit and jewelry-wise, we think she missed an opportunity to bring some fun and edge to the look. A decent attempt all around, and she’s perfectly suited for the type of look, but as always, the details were fumbled.

Vote Now!

IN! What are you TALKING about? She looks great!

OUT! For the very reasons you have elucidated, T Lo!

Sarah Gadon’s First Lady outfit was deemed a little too understated by the PUFs, who voted it OUT.

  • IN! Cute with an edge and age-appropriate.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

In from the ankles up.  Those shoes just don’t go with that outfit.

    • kikisayshi

I had to go back and look. The shoes are a little prissy, but she could have done much worse.

    • DaringMiss

ITA on the shoes.  They look so grandmotherly.

  • Regina Harrison

Out.  The blue eyeshadow is the icing on the out cake.

  • MissMariRose

    Out. It just doesn’t click.

  • Goin’ with IN, here. Though there are a few minor quibbles, as TLo stated. For me its not enough to knock her into Out territory.

    • Vlasta Bubinka

Confused Britney Spears Figure Skater Barbie!

      • Barbie skates, confused
        dreaming Britney as she glides
        no double axel

        • meowing

Ah, the soul of the poet.

        • MidArmJewel

          I love your haiku.

          • Thanks! I must thanks Vlasta Bublinka for inspiring me. Her frequent haiku are always terrific.

  • andreawey

more appropriate accessories aside, she looks pretty cute!

  • HomeOfficeGirl

More IN than out.  She gets my nod today.

  • kikisayshi

IN. I agree, the hem on the shirt should be a little shorter, but she looks young and hip (does saying “hip” make me old?). Do it, girl!

  • jmorino08

Drink some more coffee! You’re clearly still foggy-headed! She looks great!! I think the proportions are very age-appropriate for her and the accessories are too. Fun, young and edgy! IN!!

  • Out. It’s really the shoes.  This has never been one of my favorite looks, but she could have pulled it off with some more edgy shoes.

  • I like it, it’s an IN. I actually think the longer top helps the overall ‘schoolgirl uniform’ idea they were going for.

  • kelsita421

it means well, but methinks OUT. for some reason all i can see is that blue-ish eyeshadow matchy-matching that ill-fitting top.

  • mjude

i will go with IN. but do her shoes look to big?

    • MilaXX

yup, at least a size too large

  • lehen

its cute, but maybe she could have tucked in the shirt?  that sounds weird, but it seems a bit bulky to me.

    • That’s what I was thinking, with a wide-ish belt of some sort to cover the tuck.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I’m not in love with this top/skirt combo, but it’s nothing compared to my disdain of these shoes. OUT on account of auntie stripper shoes.

  • Judy_J

I think the problem with the skirt is that the pleats are not pressed.  It appears to me that this skirt has box pleats that have just not been well defined.  And I agree with you about the shoes; all wrong for this outfit.  Nice try, but the devil is in the details.  OUT.

  • Patricia Gillett

More IN than out. Would have been a home run if she had a slimmer leather skirt and shoes without bows/accents.

  • janetjb

  • TheLaurenJean

Oh, she looks fine! In and sweet.

  • Small in, I guess. I think a belt, maybe? could have helped this. Hate the shoes.

  • lovelyivy

IN! When I was a teenager I would have just died (Read: pined after and then gone back to wearing my uniform) for an outfit this cool!

  • teensmom99

Sorry to say it’s OUT because it does get points for not being super-sexualized.  But the gay uncles are as always right on every count.  And I think I saw an outfit like this a few years ago at Justis (the former LImited II) when my daughter was sitll shopping there.

  • Tatiana Luján

What if she tucked her shirt into her skirt, would the outfit loose it’s edge?

  • mini_d

More IN than out – not perfect, but cute! Don’t like the shoes or the gold, but fairly weather-appropriate.  Looks great at first glance!

  • OUT.

I’m bothered by the length of the shirt and the skirt. It makes her look like she has no kind of shape. Tuck the shirt into the skirt and rip the bows off from the heel and THEN we’re talking.

  • quiltrx

IN!  She’s iCarly, dudes, and that’s a really cute outfit.  Most GROWN women don’t know how to accessorize (as we see here every day), so I’ll cut her some slack there.

  • I’m going with IN here—it’s not perfect, and the shoes are a distraction, but it’s fun and oh-so-appropriate for the venue.  I think a pencil skirt would have been too severe, especially in leather.  Hair could use some attention, too.

  • IN. Not crazy about the shoes with this outfit but I think she looks really cute.

  • Only the young can pull off something like this. IN so she’ll keep taking chances with separates.

  • call_me_schmeg

i give it an IN. the top is a bit boxy/not fitted enough. and yes, too many gold accents. but i like the idea enough and gurl is cute. makeup is spot on.

  • EveEve

She gets an IN, though I agree on the length of the top.  And whats up with the Minwax’d cheeks on the youngsters lately?

  • BazoDee

IN. You raise some valid points but not enough for an out.

  • Susan Crawford

The top is a little long and boxy paired with this flippy skirt. It’s a cute concept that failed in the execution. Also, here is yet ANOTHER pretty young thing made up like Norma Desmond. This. Must. Stop.

Despite my quibbling, I’m giving the little dear an IN, because I feel the young must be encouraged.

  • In. You’re picking nits, and they’re valid nits, but In.

  • OUT–you didn’t even talk about that limp greasy hair.

    • GillianHolroyd

Aside from the boxy top with too-much-horizontal going on, her hair bothered me the most. Pretty face, flat hair. As someone said upthread, the devil is in the details. Out.

  • afabulous50

    OUT.  Brush your hair!!!!!

  • EditKitten

I actually like the outfit, but the shoes are so wrong that they send a cute look OUT for me.

  • IN, love that it’s age-appropriate but not twee

  • I think that this is cute, but all of your comments are valid. This is an almost… but the shoes are tragic!

  • julnyes

The top is a bit too boxy and the shoes belong with a different outfit methinks, but still an IN.

  • When I saw Juicy Couture paired with Carven, I thought for sure it was going to be a disaster, but I love this.

IN. But I kinda hate the peep toe. Peep toe should go die.

  • allj

Agree about the skirt, but I love the idea and the execution is still pretty adorable. IN.

  • LongTall_Sally

IN, though I’d really love the look after she (or her stylist) has fixed the problems you noted.

  • Scarlet39

Since she’s young, this is passable.  I’ll give her an IN.    On anyone older than 20, it would be all wrong.

  • snarkykitten

The WalMart logo in the background seems very appropriate here.

  • librarygrrl64

Pretty bracelets. And that’s all I got. OUT.

  • MissAnnieRN

I actually quite like this and the issues you’re having with the proportions aren’t bothering me.  The shoes are awful though.  They take the look into costume-y territory.  Like maybe she’s about to star in a remake of a video for Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher” or something.

  • OUT. It’s frumpy. It doesn’t fit her well. It’s… wow. If this were on Project Runway is would be in the bottom three. Send it home in shame.

  • jw_ny

I’ll be kind and go with IN

The skirt and top…I’m wavering but do agree that the top is too long and boxy as is.  I’m wondering if it should have been tucked into the skirt.  I rather like the 2 paired together tho.

Jewelery looks cheap and like she borrowed it from her mom, as well as the shoes….which are completely wrong for this outfit.

  • It’s age- and event-appropriate, but it’s still ugly. And cheap looking, all of it.
It looks like she thought “Hmmmmm, how can I look like I’m wearing clothes designed by the event host (Walmart) without actually having to shop at Walmart?”

So it’s an OUT for me.

  • Although the shoes are completely ridiculous, I’ll say in, because the rest of the ensemble is adorable.

  • OUT!  It’s completely out of proportion, and just looks….weird.  Plus the fact that she did go for an attempt at “Edgy Schoolgirl” at an event entitled Teachers Rock gives her an automatic OUT for bad punning.

  • crash1212

IN. I’m giving this an IN because she’s young and I don’t want to discourage her. This was a good concept, but the proportion point is well taken. I actually like the jewelry with this, but could do without the shoes. Hair and make-up are pretty and appropriate…and dare I say it? That looks like REAL hair – like that grew out of her actual head! If not…great extensions…all you ratty extensioned people need to have a chat with little Miss’ hair peeps.

  • belfebe

OUT.  I actually like the shoes with the outfit, although some edgy booties would have probably worked better.  But that skirt simply doesn’t go.  Otherwise, she’d been adorable.

  • In. It’s adorable.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

    Adorable. IN.

  • IN! I think she looks adorable. Not that you care in the slightest what I think!

  • Aly Light

I think the bulk of the leather does bad things to the top when worn like that, but I suspect a lot of this could have been fixed by tucking it in. Missed opportunity, OUT.

  • MilaXX

OUT, the sum is lessor than it’s parts. Shirt is too long, shoes are all wrong, the bracelets are unnecessary and her makeup is pancaked on.

  • I like it! IN!

  • VRuss

OUT, top is too boxy for that skirt.

  • Eva_baby

OUT.  Everything from the waist up is sooo cute.  Don’t like the skirt fabric and hate the shoes.

  • It’s an IN for me for avoiding looking like the average teen star.

  • IN! I hate the shoes and she maybe should have tucked the shirt into the skirt? but I love the paring and the flounce skirt looks better than a pencil skirt would!

  • formerlyAnon

Totally on the fence. It would have been a clear ‘in’ were the black skirt not shiny. But since I AM on the fence and there’s nothing horrendous about it, I’ll go with in. Reluctantly.

  • phrenk

I agree that the proportions are off, but she’s making it work for me anyway.  IN.

  • siriuslover

I give her an IN. I think she looks cute (and she also looks her age…what is she now, 19?)

  • Rebecca Zmarzly

    I like it. In.

  • Out! It is cute but the proportions are ALL wrong to the point of destroying the overall effect. Plus, I have vowed to cast a negative vote for every celebrity that does not have the right shoe size. You have all the money, energy and help to put a look together and you cannot find the right shoe size? Unforgivable!

  • out for a walk

OUT! I mildly hate it all. But for me it’s not so much the styling — I don’t like the pieces separately, either, except for that lovely little gold ring.

  • kimmeister

Out for the very reasons you have elucidated, TLo, plus the yellow beaded ring is a total throwaway.  Her hair sure is shiny though.

  • sockandaphone

knee-jerk reaction was uh, no. But the more I look at t, the more I like it. I think it woulda been better with the top being a kosh shorter but its cute and shes young so she can away with trying these things. IN for A+ effort.

  • OUT!

  • Scroll-down fug, to borrow from the Girls.  OUT.

  • boomchicabowwow

IN!  I really like this on her.

  • bailey debruynkops

the top needed to be cropped, or at least shorter some. out

  • PastryGoddess

Miranda is a gorgeous girl, but her hair and makeup do her no favors.  Don’t get me wrong, her hair is pretty and shiny and doesn’t look like she just came from yoga (ahem BIEL) but she has FACE.  Look at those eyes and her cheeks could cut a bitch and keep on walking.

Can we get her some new gays? Anyone…Anyone..Bueller..Bueller?

  • mhleta

When I first saw it, I thought it was a jumper, ie that the skirt and top were sewn together. Didn’t like it for the reasons you state and knowing they’re actually separates makes it worse because, dammit, lives are at stake here and this sort of carelessness could have been avoided. The humanity. Anyhoo, I concur, ‘twould be awesome with a pencil skirt, or…OR! Cigarette pants and a sick little pair of ballet flats. Love the top, she’s cute as a bug’s kneecap, the rest is out.

  • DaveUWSNYC

    I bow to TLo…OUT

  • spititout

In.  Because it is a leather skirt, not leather shorts, ala Lea Michele.  Because she is not wearing tights with it.  No chafing stank crotch! She looks fresh and relatively comfortable, in spite of shiny face.

  • RebeccaKW

Going with In.  Age appropriate and cute, and nothing heinous.  Well, those shoes don’t go, but I don’t hate them.

  • Meh. Out.

  • In.

  • zelavie

    OUT.  Proportions.

  • CheriCPat

In, if the top was by anyone except for Juicy.  Out for providing an endorsement to a clothing company for women that is called “Juicy.”

  • OUT.  The top needed to be altered so it wouldn’t erase her waist, and the gold jewelry is too expected.  Fun try, though.

  • Out. It doesn’t look like a leather skirt, even. It looks like a home ec assignment gone bad.

  • Out. Top is adorable, but not with that particular skirt. That kind of skirt needs a top that is tucked in and with a cute belt.

  • ChelseaNH

In, because it’s not wrong enough to be out.

  • Vickiefantastico

Out. I can’t stand those collars. Is that a Peter Pan collar? Whatever it is, I’m ready for the trend to be over. I think people look ridiculous in them. And the shoes are terrible.

  • Ugh OUT.

  • SophieCollier

The details are all wrong, and as you stated, it almost but not quite works.  An OUT but not a terrible one.

  • IN for the schoolgirl top, OUT for the skirt.  and i wanted to like it, too.

  • leave_Blake_alone

IN. I sorta get what you’re saying but not really. It’s cute.

  • marilyn

Out.  It is all too random.  Fire the stylist.

  • Biker Catholic School Girl…with strange shoes. out.

  • PinkLemon

She couldn’t have tucked that shirt??

  • IN. I wish the shoes weren’t so high but I love the outfit, have no problem with the proportion of the top and skirt and love her accessories. Cu-u-ute!

  • IN! Proportions are fresh, matchy matchy gold communicates “I’m young and therefore not cynical about matching too much”.

  • bluefish

IN!  I love her because my son loved her some years ago and her kooky tv show.  Beautiful young woman — She looks really cute.  Not wild about those shoes but, what the heck — She young enough to pull all kinds of stuff off.  (That sounds odd, I know.)

The top is really really great.

  • Have to give her an IN. A little matchy-matchy with the gold accents, but I think she looks adorable and she is just too young to be OUT.

  • margaret meyers

In.  This is Juicy, not couture.  She’s working her market just fine.

  • PrunellaV

I thought “schoolgirl with an edge” before I scrolled down to read your comments! The shoes are a bit much, but I think overall, she’s IN. The length of the top is OK for me, because it gives a modesty to the look that’s fitting for a young girl at a teacher’s event.

  • StrandedFashionista

You made good points, but it’s cute enough on the whole to get an IN from me.

  • My thoughts exactly on the top. A few inches shorter, and this would have been really cute. I don’t mind the jewelry, but those shoes really are just wrong, though cute in their own right. I can vote neither IN nor OUT on this one; I can only say MEH.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

OUT, too many misses in the detailing though the idea was sound. A nice straight leather mini would have been great, and perhaps a great pair of dangerous shoes.

  • IN.  she looks adorable and i think the proportions are fine.  for awkward proportions, see kelly osborne.  i always love a bad little school girl in plaid, ready to get punished by the nuns for wearing eyeliner.

  • Jangle57

  • Out. It doesn’t do a thing for her.

  • deathandthestrawberry

She looks cute. IN. And so far she seems to have avoided the pitfalls of being a tween star. Good on her.

  • AWS

  • OUT. Ugliest plaid print ever. Looks like a couch cover.

  • I give it a big IN! She looks cute.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Ahh,  she’s young and she’s trying.  I’ll give her an IN.

  • ojosazules

She looks like a tote bag. Out.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I don’t know who you are but I love you.  That was hilarious.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I’ll take that gold, thank you very much. I’ll just take it off of her and use it to fund my retirement.

  • L.

OUT for me, because of the shoes.  Otherwise like a lot.

  • silaria

I’ll give it an in.  I think she looks cute.

  • I like the outfit, cute!

But could someone PLEASE wear shoes that fit!

  • IN

  • DeGuz

IN! She looks super cute. That, and I don’t know what elucidate means.

  • I vote IN. It’s not bad enough to be out.

  • Sassy and cute and she is just the right girl for it. I say IN.

  • demidaemon

    I find this hideous. OUT.

  • turtleemily

In. I think it’s really cute, and I love the shoes. I can’t help but feel like tucking in the shirt might have saved this.

  • harleydear

    Out. Great idea, poor execution.

  • sleepycat

The skirt needs to be slightly longer, perhaps pulled down at tad. Otherwise I think she is an IN!

  • ThaliaMenninger

It’s like you could wash a car in her crotch, which is so wrong on so many levels.

  • cleep1000

    OUT. Too boxy.

  • butterflysunita

IN.  Not wild about the outfit, but she looks good.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • I literally gasped in horror when I scrolled down to the skirt. Shoes are a bad paIring too. OUT.

  • MzzPants

    Out.  Hot mess.

  • AlinaValero

IN. She’s young so she can get away with weird proportions and gold overloading.

  • OUT awkward as hell. shoes are beyond bizarre and top doesn’t fit! next!

  • OUT. Wrong shapes and over-worked.

  • TieDye64

Nice effort, but HATE the shoes. Minor IN.

  • Verascity

I honestly adore it head to toe. IN!

  • Out. That’s stupid.

  • I like the attempt, and I’ll give it a provisional IN, but the skirt is too stiff for the length of the top.  I think the shoes are as cute as any ankle breakers.

  • out. too many little things wrong with it.

  • Trisha26

  • understateddiva

ugh on the fence, a grudging in because she looks cute and event-appropriate, but those matchy accessories are trying WAY too hard to tie it together.

  • littlemac8

Out for those reasons so well elucidated!
