In or Out: Kerry Washington in Christian Dior

Posted on August 10, 2012

We love this look:

Kerry Washington attends the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 2012 Installation Luncheon in Beverly Hills, California in a Christian Dior resort dress.

Christian Dior Resort 2013 Collection

You are a fabulously chic cupcake, girl!

It’s a perfect little dress for her and she’s WERQing the shit out of it. But we decided to make this an “IN or OUT” post, which means we have to find something to critique, so we’ll say this: her hair looks a tiny little bit limp and a big princess-y blowout would have looked great here. Also, a skinny belt might have been nice. But that’s it. Either you like it or you don’t, darlings.

Vote Now!

IN! I like it!

OUT! I don’t like it!

The kittens fiercely debated Mena Suvari’s ice princess look and there was much discussion about lip color vs. shoe color, but they had no problem at all declaring it IN.

    I no like.

  • TheOriginalLulu

I like it. Not usually a fan of so much pink, but it’s a great color for her and she looks really pretty. I like the little pop of turquoise in the ring. IN

  • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Cassie L

    IN. Better than the model.

  • BazoDee

IN but not a werq -the color is too light to have these proportions. works better in the navy. A skinny belt would have been awesome!! ETA -ew the shoes!!!

    • PhillyJen

Yes, 100%. The colors and the big stripes read silly with a hint of circus tent. The blue works much better. However, hair and makeup are fantastic so I say IN.

    • RebeccaKW

Yes, the navy is the best version. I don’t dislike Kerry’s version, though, even if a bit cupcake-y.  The shoes could be better but at least aren’t peep toe or giant horse hoof platforms.  I’m going with In, as well.

  • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

    IN.

  • Paigealicious

I like the blue version better. It’s a cute little dress but the placing of the waistline makes it look like she’s wearing a little girl’s dress that just happened to fit her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Maya-KC/537771651 Maya KC

Out. She’s working it like a diva, but the dress still reads 4 year old to me.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

I’m having total deja vu over this dress. Why is that?

    • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gaby
    • moppet

It reminds me of a Sophie Theallet dress I’ve seen Michelle Obama wear, but I don’t know if that’s what you’re thinking of. If I put the link my comment will go to comment purgatory, but I think if you google Michelle Obama and Sophie Theallet, you’ll see some pix.

      • neeva

I like this kind of look on Michelle because she wears the skirt at knee length.  That’s why she can look like a grown woman in it.

    • http://twitter.com/MollyBaney Molly Sadler Baney

Jessica Biel wore it a few weeks ago in white.

      • moppet

Boom. You are absolutely right. Well, between the pink version and the white version, I choose…well…the navy version. Actually, the pink looks all right but the dress itself is a little too infantile for me.

  • http://twitter.com/SioConnellan Siobhan Connellan

Love the dress. Kinda hate the shoes.

  • http://twitter.com/_karenbee_ Karen Bee

I wish the waist was dropped a few inches – it’s making her look thick. But the color’s nice on her.

    • ballerinawithagun

I agree. If she is going to wear the waistline that high she shouldn’t put her hands at her actual waist. Color, fabric and style are great on her except for that one point.

  • NDC_IPCentral

Sorta, reluctantly in.  The dress seems short-waisted, and the gathered skirt almost looks like panniers – broad hips.  I think the colors are super – attractive pairing and especially good with Ms. Washington’s coloring.

  • http://gabyrippling.tumblr.com/ Gabriella M

    Also, super-IN.
But I don’t know why the color combination/silhouette is giving me deja vu. I know Jessica Biel wore that white ballerina version of this dress, but something about this appearance feels like it happened before.

  • harlowish

I would love it if it had a belt, but there’s enough here that I like that I can safely declare this IN!

  • http://twitter.com/BookcaseHat Emily

Out. That is a little girl’s birthday dress, and she looks ridiculous.

    • Sara__B

Yes! And the waist of the dress sits too high, as if she outgrew her favorite Kindergarten dress but still insists on wearing it now that she’s in third grade.

  • j_anson

Because who doesn’t want a dress reminiscent of a dashboard hula dancer? But nah, she looks good in it: IN.

  • http://aldonsusi.blogspot.com/ Susi R

    In for sure!

  • crash1212

    IN. I like it!

  • AlexisPayne

I love it; I love the color, the silhouette, even the shoes which work on her.
In, though agreed, the hair needed a little something.

  • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

    It’s so…shiny.

And yet, she’s making it work. IN.

  • janetjb

It’s a cute dress and the color is pretty on Kerry.

The fit is off, the waist is too high and, more annoying to me, the bust darts are missing their mark.  Out.

  • understateddiva

eh, I’m yawning.  A grudging in, because nothing is technically wrong here, but I don’t think her beauty is best set off by this Barbie look.  She’s got this sultry gaze, then you scroll down and her dress is saying “hee hee!  I’m a pretty doll!”

  • http://profiles.google.com/grandiva1968 e jerry powell

    IN.

Kerry Washington is ALWAYS IN.  In sackcloth and ashes Kerry Washington is IN.  Wearing Buffi’s eliminated cotton candy piece of shit from the last PR episode, Kerry Washington is IN.

  • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow Kathy Marlow

She’s an in from me, but I love her on Scandal, can’t wait for the next season.

  • Judy_S

In. Don’t like the dress in itself, adore her in it. I think bigger hair would be a mistake.

  • KELLEYKAT

Out.  don’t like the proportion on her, the color, the shoes or the floppy hair.

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

In! The shoes work because the dress is so bright.

  • call_me_schmeg

total IN. love it that she’s vamping up a very sweet look with come good ol’ come hither eyes. and those brights just pop against her skin.

  • Aly Light

I think it looks like a ballet outfit. It’s infantalizing. OUT.

  • MissAnnieRN

It’s too Taylor swift for me. She doesn’t look bad or anything (that face!) but it just feels so juvenile. Like someone under 24 should wear it. Emma stone or something.

  • belfebe

No likey.  OUT.  To twee for her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/katiewolf2002 Katie Wolf

In, but I don’t like the shoes, nails & lipstick.

  • http://twitter.com/floydpookyjames James

    twee as fuck.

  • ASK26

The proportions are off – and honestly no different that other examples that have been noted here by a bunch of people.
SHE looks pretty but the dress looks “off”

  • mhleta

Really, this is open for debate? It’s an emphatic IN for me. That color is sublime on her.

  • Julie Fountain

Love it.  Great little luncheon look for her. Not crazy about the shoes but I still say IN.

  • carolynmo

I like it; I’d love it if it were a bit longer. She looks lovely. IN.

  • petalfrog

It actually needs to be quite a bit tighter. It looks very loose around the waist which is creating an odd proportion in the high flare out waist.

  • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.in/ Cassie

I don’t love it, but I do like it on her (agree about the hair though.) IN, with some quibbles.

  • leave_Blake_alone

In! I actually kind of like the limp-ish hair with the look.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

    IN!

I like it, except I still hate the high waist/short skirt combo that makes it look like the starlet is wearing a child-sized dress. If the dress proportions were a little better, this would definitely be a WERQ for me.

I think the hair and makeup look great — I have the exact same hair (seriously… I took a photo of her to my stylist last week), and unfortunately, the least bit of heat or humidity is going to cause the hair to droop. It still looks great, though.

And the nude shoes don’t offend me on her, perhaps because they’re not “nude” on her.

  • baxterbaby

In, although I prefer the blue.  I feel that a belt wouldn’t help (there’s far too much gratuitous belting going on IMO) and I like her hair and makeup.  She’s such a pretty polished little thing (and smart too).

  • E_bee

In. That color looks so good on her, no one else should be allowed to wear it anymore.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=688150598 Elizabeth Siegel

    In. Want.

  • JasmineAM

    Her foundation looks really weird.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5CKSF5UBY4AX3I5J6GWBIF26QI shirley thomas

as a black woman i think kerry’s make up for some reason tv/movies etc is alway a shade too light. with all of the fab, more natural colors for us black women to wear now,  i say kerry take a good look in the mirror. her makeup on scandal is scandalously awful

  • jmorino08

    In!

  • MilaXX

IN but I hate the shoe.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BMEASIKJSVE6YP3DE2VLJA5CUU JulieJ

Out.  The color makes her skin look sallow.

  • Susan Crawford

IN. Love the dress and the color on her. Wish she had gone with a different shoe, but those silly putty pumps have just got to run their course, I guess. Love the little color-pop of the ring, too. It’s these tiny details that make Miss Kerry so much fun to follow.

  • Joyce VG

No fair because this is an obvious IN.  But it’s a bit too twee for me.

  • Alisa Rivera

Elle Fanning would reject this dress for making her look too young. OUT.

  • prettybigkitty

Out.  Too shiny, short and flouncy.  Cute if you are under 4.   4 years old that is, not size 4.   And it reminds me of a lampshade.   A very pretty lampshade, but still a lampshade.

  • Jangle57

Nothing here to complain about from my perspective.  IN

  • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

In, but I like the original colors of the dress more.

  • Mary Jo Kirwan

This is Kiernan Shipka’s dress and she would look adorable in it.  But I’m tired of seeing grown women infantilized by these goofy proportions.  Drop the waist and the hemline and we can talk.  Until then…OUT.

    • nannypoo

I think Kiernan would reject it as too young. It might be just right for the girl on Honey BooBoo.

    • alyce1213

Absolutely. I too am sick and tired of seeing short little girl dresses on grown-ass women.  A very bad trend. You’re right – a dropped waist would be great.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1452430239 Roxanne Pedro

totally agree! I was getting a little irate just looking at it.  Definitely over the grown women dressed at children trend that’s going on right now.  It’s creepy.

  • Pants_are_a_must

That dress is for a tween little girl. There’s WERQing to be seen in here, but she’s just not a tween, sorry. OUT.

  • lonepear

    1. I can’t wait for the super-high-waisted trend to die.

    2. In the first picture, her head is blocking part of the text so it looks like the sign reads “Foreign Dress Association”. Heh.

    3. Dress is kind of juvenile, but it’s Kerry Washington, who could make a Hefty bag look good, so–IN.

  • nannypoo

Too young, too short, too high-waisted, wrong shoes.

  • Squarah

Hate. Too cutesy candy shop for me. Looks like a toddler’s dress. She looks gorgeous as usual though.

  • PeggyOC

In.  That’s a cute little look.  On a blonde it would have veered into “too sweet” territory, but with her skin color, it’s fabulous.

  • alyce1213

OUT. Way too immature and poofy for a woman of substance like Kerry.

  • butter nut

skinny belt & blow-out would have taken this to full on WERQ status.  but for now, it’s just a mere IN.

  • http://www.kittenmasks.com kittenmasks

OUT. She would’ve looked so much better in the blue and white rather than the pink.

  • demidaemon

I would have preferred this in the runway color scheme. This pink and orange reads a little tween-ish to me. She looks pretty, but I’m just not liking it very much. OUT.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I love it! - IN.  Agree a little belt could have been good.  The nude shoe works here because it doesn’t match her skin tone.  Nice job, KW!!

  • SophieCollier

The waistline is a skosh too high, making her torso look stumpy.  It also seems to be a bit of a “little girl” type dress which always looks a bit trashy on a grown woman.  But its cute and would look great on a teenager.

  • StrandedFashionista

In. She looks darling. I’d agree though, a belt would have been a nice touch.

  • afabulous50

Out – too twee for her.

  • lolaleen

This is a toughie. I like the look in general but not on her. It’s too juvenile for her, in my opinion.

  • Little_Olive

Too dainty for my taste -although way better than the model.
Didn’t Jessica Biel try this already and got a GTINYD for it?

  • http://kingderella.tumblr.com/ kingderella

IN! had the same thought: maybe a belt.

  • elemspbee

OUT. Too twee for her. And the mid-area is ill-fitting. plus matchy putty color nail polish and shoes?

  • 3boysful

Love the color on her, don’t like the proportions of the bodice–too short– and the skirt–too cupcake.

    A qualified IN?

  • GillianHolroyd

I loved the dress in dramatic colors on the model.
IRL, it looks shiny, wrinkled, and high-waisted and nuke those shoes from orbit. Out.

  • a_liking

out. i just don’t like it.

  • jw_ny

    IN

Her hair looks fine and makeup is good.  She certainly has the legs and body to pull of a dress like this although I feel it may be teetering into the “precious” category…perhaps the colors & fabric sheen takes it there.   idk.

    Shoes…meh.

  • karena10

The color is good on her, but that’s the only nice thing I can say.  The proportions of the dress are just wrong. The waist is a little too high.  It looks like a little girl’s dress that still fits around the torso, but she has grown an inch or two and her mother is determined to get another wearing out of it.

  • sockandaphone

i would vote it in if it was in the original color. i just cannot deal with people putting pink and red together.

  • PinkLemon

IN. I like it. This could have looked too twee, but the face she’s giving mitigates.

  • Coralie Legister

Am I missing something or is this dress straight out of Miu Miu’s SS08 collection?
    http://redcfa.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/rock-the-kasbah-gala-kc.jpg
Maybe I’m wrong but I just didn’t think that was considered ok lol.

Anyway its an IN from me, I think she looks gorgeous.

  • JulieTy

Like . . . except for the shoes!!!!

  • guest2visits

She’s very beautiful, the dress is very pretty; if only it were a few inches longer, then it would really be a dress. Out of balance, imo.

  • trisker

    IN.

  • TieDye64

IN, though a little belt would’ve made this killah.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

Needs a belt, shoes are a snoozefest. OUT.

  • http://twitter.com/urban_gypsy Tess Danesi

I still can’t get over the fact that it’s August in Beverly Hills and no one seems to own a pretty pair of sandals but they all have closets full of nude pumps and jumbo suede platform pumps.

As for Kerry, she looks cute but it doesn’t come near a WERQ for me.

  • unbornfawn

OUT. Nothing really wrong it just reads as too Twee on her.  It is a cute dress, like other bitter kittens, I like the blue one better.

  • Alyson Epstein

I think the color washes her out terribly.

  • snarkykitten

how is this not twee as fuck?

  • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

I was about to make the skinny belt comment too. The waist could use some definition, and a third color could be a good addition – overall, I have to say I prefer the navy and white version over this by a wide margin. Need I even mention the shoes? IN but with lots of room for improvement.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

In. She’s incredible and I love the pink and red.

  • boomchicabowwow

IN!  FAB color choice for her.

  • pookiesmom

This girl is outrageously gorgeous. Genetics, why you so unfair?!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

The waist is a little too high & it makes the dress look a little young for her. (I know she’s not old but she’s also not Shirley Temple.)  If it had a grown-up bodice and a better pair of shoes, it would be a home run.

  • nancy

In! I agree with it needing a belt, but loving the color.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/M2D277JWFM4BUI7PWTTGYM67XI Mathilde

I like it a lot. IN

    In. Very Sandra Dee.

Out. Proportions are weird. The waist is too high on her ribs and looks bulky.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=734251880 Joalissa Jean

In for me. Color looks good on her.

  • Vickiefantastico

Gorgeous! An obvious IN for me.

  • http://twitter.com/kerrymccombs Kerry McCombs

    Cute. In.

  • Judih1

Color is great on her, but the dress could be longer in length and longer in the torso for someone her age. Looks too twee, for me. OUT>

Seems like recently all the young girls who are “twee” dress too mature and the women who should be dressing like women, instead want to dress twee.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Boring shoes.  Boring hair.  Still, I like the dress, especially the blue/white version.  Qualified in.

  • http://twitter.com/LOfficielEbony TheVeryLivingEND

    In, but hate the shoes.

  • momogus

    Super IN!

  • marilyn

In.  A cute, cool summer look

  • formerlyAnon

    In.

Though if one must pick nits, I’d like the dress to be 1.5-2 inches longer ( I KNOW as it is, is “the Look”) but between the hair and the skirt length, she reminds me forcibly of a cigarette girl in a movie from back in the days when movies were in black & white.

I’d like the hair to be less languid, and if there was ever an ensemble where the shoes OUGHT TO BE A COLOR, this one is it.

    But, still. In.

  • Cat_In_A_Hat

    Cute! In!

  • formerlyAnon

Similar effect, but very different construction of the bodice and similar but not identical fullness where skirt meets waistline.

I think there’s just not that much that’s new under the sun, if one pays attention and has a moderately good visual memory.

  • granddelusion

I like everything but the shoes. In.

  • http://twitter.com/ndpndntfilm Susan Velazquez

    In is my vote.

  • nannypoo

I checked in to see how the voting is going and I’m surprised at how many bitter kittens are calling this an in. She looks like she’ll blow out all 4 candles and wish for a pony.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Kerry needs to let this dress go and give it to one of the baby starlets that T&Lo criticize to dressing too maturely — she looks as though she has on her 12 year old daughter’s dress.

  • Monabel

    In.

    IN. Love it.

  • ChelseaNH

And the pinks just keep coming.  But I like pink.  IN!

  • Cousin_Rose

In but mostly on color, hair and makeup. The dress is too high waisted for an adult and looks a little silly from the side view. Front view with her pushing it down a bit (like she KNOWS), she does look good. The neckline is gorgeous and I really like that hairstyle. I think you need to compromise on the putty shoes. Just like Emmy Rossum the other day, I think that putty looks great with pink as long as it doesn’t match the skin color.

  • Celandine1

Totally IN, I love the cupcake princess. This dress looks so much better here on Kerry than the white version did when Jessica Biel wore it last month. With all the color going on, I don’t even mind the nude pumps.

  • kikisayshi

    IN. She looks super cute.

  • Beth G

In but I like the original blue better.

  • quiltrx

IN.  I love the dress, and the color choice works for her where it might not for others.

  • Thathoodwink

I don’t know if it’s just me, but this dress, being that short, looks very young on her. I do love it, but maybe about 4 inches longer?

  • frankystein123

T Lo, the question is meant to be rhetorical right?

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

I think the skirt hits a skoosh too high. OUT.

OUT. It’s juvenile and unflattering, and I can’t believe I’m saying this about Dior, but it looks a little cheap.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Out.  I have never liked the high waistline.  The proportions are off.  I didn’t like the white version worn by Jessica Biel, and I don’t like this pink one, either.  The original navy colored one looks better than both.  But I still don’t like the high waist and puffy skirt.  It looks too childish.

  • Patricia Gillett

IN.Perfect as is. Skinny belt would have been distracting.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Love it. Definite IN here :-)

  • librarygrrl64

Not a fan of this silhouette combined with this skirt length. Out.
