Holland Roden in PinkYotto and Alice + Olivia

Posted on August 02, 2012

Ooooh, girl. We just don’t know about this one.

Holland Roden attends the NYLON Magazine August Issue Launch Party in Hollywood in a top by PinkYotto and skirt by Alice + Olivia paired with Alexandre Birman shoes and a Dannijo necklace.

And when we say “We just don’t know,” we of course mean “We have an immediate and strong reaction to this, but we’re trying to temper it by pretending we’re thinking it over.”

At first, we were all, “Girl, that is NOT your skirt.” But we think we’re wrong about that. Sure, a lemon-yellow satin pleated bubble skirt has a very limited range of people who’ll look good in it, but she’s young and tiny and cute, so there’s no reason why this couldn’t work for her under other circumstances. Circumstances like a belt, and a shove down so it’s all not riding so high on her. Also: we’re not convinced yellow is her color.

Then we were all, “Girl that is NOT your top,” but we think we’re a bit wrong about that, too. It’s just that this top is a terrible choice for the skirt and it’s a bit too tight on her. Plus that bejeweled collar looks awful with it. And then there’s the fact that every single person she encountered that night surreptitiously tried to determine if they could see her nipples.

No, we’re afraid this is an instance where, if you want to wear the skirt, you’d be better off just copying the runway style. That skirt needs specific pieces to make it work and in this case, we think we’d have advised her to pay attention to what the designer wanted.

Also, also: her hair comes to a point and that’s really distracting.

No.  Just no.  None of this works, in my opinion.

This outfit is bad. And can we talk about the fact that her hair is making her look like a Conehead? I kind of like the shoes, but from head to ankles this poor girl is just a hot mess...DiscoverMoreWays.blogspot.com

    • MoHub

       My reaction precisely.

    • Vickiefantastico

      Exactly

  • meowing

Don’t know who this childstar is, but this getup isn’t doing her any favors.  It’s fine, when you’re young (and rich) do explore different styles, but it must be killer to have every single outfit–bad and good–in the public eye.  My horrors are only in the h.s. yearbook, and who ever sees that??

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

She’s in Teen Wolf on MTV.  As most people that play teens, she is well into her 20′s.

  • Scarlet39

That top is horribly wrong.  She looks almost obscene.

    • Anathema_Device

I craned my neck close to my monitor and really studied her boobs to see what was going on under there. Hopefully that wasn’t the reaction she wanted.

      • call_me_schmeg

she’s got that look on her face that says, “you’re all looking at my boobs, aren’t you?”

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610791985 Aniela Marie Perry

My first reaction: Special needs call girl.

      • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

LOL – too funny!  The hair is the most tragic, IMO.  Although the rest of it is pretty darned bad, too.  Except the shoes.  Love the shoes.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

Terrible clothes, hair and styling.  This outfit makes this very pretty girl look like an Oompa Loompa.  What a shame.

  • RzYoung

I flove the necklace/collar, not sure about any of the rest. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a nice bubble skirt, do they exist?

    • Judy_J

I’ve never seen a bubble skirt that looked good on anyone.

      • Lindsay McCarthy

They look great on my 4-year old!

        • Kristin McNamara

          hahaha! LAWYERED!

        • littlemac8

Exactly!!!  No one over 7 or 8 should wear that skirt.  It looks totally ridiculous on it’s own but when paired with sky high peep toe pumps she just looks like she’s playing dress-ups.  And she is expressing a fashion sensibility commensurate with my 5 year old niece!

    • AmeliaEve

I think the necklace/collar is cute and witty with the lace blouse, but the blouse is too tight, and the skirt just makes me uneasy.

  • YousmelllikeAnnaWintour

And the original model looks like an Easter egg.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I know pastels are the coming trend. Can I tell you how sad that makes me?  Years of mint, peach, blush and dusty lavender. The thought makes me shudder.

      • j_anson

Just once in the next decade, I’d like to have a year where colors that suit me are actually in.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

i KNOW!   I am not a pastels kinda guy, neither by temper, nor coloring.  We got great, saturated color back for two seasons, and now they’re draining it away again.  SIGH.  Not that men have had as much room to play in this regard as women, in any case.  For most menswear its an unremitting sea of gray tones.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Pretty much everything is wrong here.  From her hair and makeup to the clothes and accessories.  This is an unmitigated fail. The nude lace top is too small, and binds at her shoulder, plus being the wrong shade for her.  The skirt is a wrong length for her, and a color her skin should never be next to. That collar looks silly over that blouse, especially since the neckline doesn’t work with the hang of the necklace collar.  The clutch is too ladylike, in a more grown up sense, with this outfit. And the shoes, while inoffensive in themselves, don’t work with this at all.

    • AudreysMom

True. In this case, the whole is far worse than the sum of the parts.

  • jennifervney

I actually shuddered when I scrolled down to the skirt, and then shuddered again when I got a closer look at her boobs. There is so much going wrong with this one little outfit.

  • newleaf1

Shoes are cute.  That is all.

  • Lori

This is one time when I think T & Lo are being too kind. This outfit is bad. And can we talk about the fact that her hair is making her look like a Conehead? I kind of like the shoes, but from head to ankles this poor girl is just a hot mess.

  • http://www.facebook.com/AdriannaGrezak Adrianna Grężak

    colorblocking gone wrong

Should’ve just worn a black pencil skirt and called it a fierce

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

The model’s outfit is quite cute. This, however, is just a damn mess.

    • kimmeister

The model’s outfit also illustrates what Nina Garcia said last week about pastels being on trend.

  • SewingSiren

I like the cute little necklace. It more or less works with the beige lace top, but the shiny shiny yellow with the badly turned hem is bad. Very very bad.

  • http://www.facebook.com/katiewolf2002 Katie Wolf

“…but she’s young and tiny and cute…” literally everything about this look is working hard to disguise this fact, especially the “tiny”. Sorry, that’s mean but someone should have said it earlier like, before she went out. :(

  • Anathema_Device

Yes, this is a perfect lesson in fashion: Just because you’re young and cute, it doesn’t mean you can wear anything. That beige top just dies on the yellow. If she didn’t want to wear another color with the skirt, as in the runway photo, then a crisp white would have been a little better.

  • mjude

    dear god more satin…

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

       its BA-aaaack!

      • mjude

        it just cant be!

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

           Yup, and velvet, as well.

          • mjude

i cant even go there with the velvet.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Its a formal, very luxe looking textile, and should be used with discretion, and virtually never for day wear.

          • mjude

right now the thought of velvet it triple digit weather isnt doing it :)

          • formerlyAnon

The horror of satin is, unlike velvet, IMO, ‘normal’ people who buy off-the-rack and rarely alter anything just shouldn’t even try.  Satin makes velvet look forgiving.

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Also, unlike many other textiles, when satin is cheap, it can be seen from orbit that its cheap.  Only good quality satin makes up into something worth being seen in.

      • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

My Sweet Lord George Harrison, nooooooo!!!!

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I have seen countless examples in fashion history of pieces done in satin that were gloriously lovely.  However, most every designer “in the day” stayed far away from satin for day wear. There’s a reason. Its far too formal looking a material for day wear looks.  Give me a well crafted satin evening piece anytime.  A yellow bubble skirt, (that looks sadly deflated) for day wear?  Nope.

          • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

I agree. Satin in the day time reads “hooker”. Nighttime satin can be lovely.

    • mhleta

Thank you!! I’ve grown to loathe it completely.

  • http://twitter.com/Kathy_Marlow Kathy Marlow

I agree with TLo, the way the designer styled that skirt would have been WERQ worthy on her.  Nothing is working as presented for me.

  • mhleta

I’m starting to develop a visceral reaction to satin. And yellow. Just take them off the table because literally know one can wear either, IMO.

  • http://twitter.com/jessicapippin Jessica Pippin

I don’t care for this. Her boobs are freaking me out.

    • TheOriginalLulu

      They’re terrifying, right?

  • Tatiana Luján

That shirt is terrible and bubble skirts are an invention from hell. The necklace is silly. I like her shoes.

  • MissAnnieRN

First reaction:  Twee as fuck.  I just can’t with the jeweled peter pan collar.  In theory, it’s a lovely idea – necklace as collar.  But Peter Pan collars in general just remind of the Madeline books.

  • SapphoPoet

This just does not work. I think she’s trying for ’40s/’50s fun and funky, but missed by about a mile. Too many disparate elements none of which go together. BUT–I give her credit for trying to do something different.

  • sagecreek

    Oh, that is so awful.

Like Sappho, though, I’m willing to give her credit for a) being young and b) trying.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Oh yeah, that’s kind of awful. The way the model is wearing it is much better, right down to the hairstyle. I just don’t like the long jacket over that kind of skirt, but she would have looked much better had she copied the model’s outfit.

  • http://surelysonsy.blogspot.com/ Jessica | Surely Sonsy

the look on the model is fabulous, but this – ick.

  • http://twitter.com/dixielou8 Ashley

    Tragic.

  • TonyGo

Crystal Laden Peter Pan Collar. Those words together just gave me shingles.

  • l_c_ann

The finish on the sleeves has to be irritating, who wants to feel threads hanging loose on their arms like so many unfettered cat whiskers.

  • DinaSews

Sometimes I look at these stars and wonder what they see when they look in the mirror.  Then I wonder what the heck I look like since I look in the mirror and think I look fine.  Boy this is bad.  Not one part of it is good.

  • MilaXX

None of those pieces really work together. Plus she has cone head hair.

  • ballerinawithagun

Why is she wearing expensive children’s clothes. Why are Dannijo’s (Man Repellor) necklaces so popular?

  • TSkot

    skanky

  • belfebe

Argh.  Each piece is great, just not together.  This one was a “scroll down fug,” if there ever was one.

  • Jessi03

    I want the shoes!

  • Elizabeth Silverstein

People who are nicer than me say, If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. So, silence.

  • Cathy S

The model looks super cute. This, not so much. Or at all.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

All the pieces are fine, just none of them go together.  This is the perfect example of “did you get dressed in the dark?”

  • http://www.MintaHall.com/ Minta Hall

Double NO. And let’s take up a collection to provide her with a full-length mirror…

  • formerlyAnon

I know immediately. Just completely awful.

It was kind of whomever dressed her to eliminate all ambiguity by choosing a visible-from-space bright yellow skirt that is one of the minority of colors that will not ever work with ecru lace, no matter what you try.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I always try to say something positive about these looks (Well, most of the time. Sometimes. Who am I kidding…), but I hate everything about this. The skirt and the top don’t do it for me, either together or separately. I hate those collar-necklaces that are all the thing right now. The shoes don’t go at all, the makeup is too severe, and she’s sporting ‘running errands’ hair.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1241487378 Lauren Lynch Fox

To start positive, I really like the peter-pan necklace, but not on is look. Everything else, wrong.

  • sk8tfan

To be fair, it was dark when she reached into her closet and the yellow had a flashlight effect so she grabbed it but couldn’t see what else she was sloppily and haphazardly throwing on her body. The blouse could be cute in a different outfit. Idiotic peter pan necklace-never. Toss that piece of tin junk back in the recycling bin from whence it came. The shorts-just say no. The shoes-stop stealing your hooker mama’s footware. Epic fail.

  • Monabel

    Eww. No. Pedophile vibe.

  • crash1212

I hate that skirt with the white hot heat of a thousand suns…but, it’s kind of cute on the model. So, TLo are correct – as happens SO many times – skirt needs very specific supporting players to work. And choosing some odd antique looking lace blouse and then putting that otherwise awesome collar necklace with it are NOT those specific supporting players. Also, conehead hair = never a good idea.

  • PastryGoddess

Well Bless Her Heart…she tried didn’t she

  • quiltrx

Just wrong, and twee as fuck too.  The collar necklace is cool but NOT with that.

  • RoxieRider

This is a theoretically incredibly cute look. I love that the necklace looks like a peter pan colar, over that lacy shirt–with some slim pants or a pencil skirt it could’ve been a slightly edgy, unexpected look. In my imaginary look (where she’s also wearing appropriate foundation garments) even the shoes work with it. I’m puzzled that someone able to come up with those pairings could fail to see how bad it all looks together.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/FEP56YB4DUIXBWSLIMSSSGQHWY jimmack

Conehead hair for sure. Skirt seems to be climbing her body and will cover her  breasts in just a few seconds of so.

  • alyce1213

    This is a joke, right?

  • http://frankbettecenter.org/ sleah_in_norcal

the hair gives a slight conehead effect and the outfit is making her a plump little girl.  which i’m sure she’s not, whoever she is.  and the cherry lipstick is not helping the effort.  she’s like a young girl who’s starting to grow breasts but there’s no room for them in her little girl blouse.  killer shoes, though.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i guess the shoes & the necklace maybe kinda sorta dont dont go together that badly? cos it’s the dissonance, here, it’s the dissonance that’s making just about everything look horrible. not to mention the halfhearted priscilla before presley hairdo.

too bad, too, cos all the pieces are pretty good in their own individual rights. just the whole is much less than the sum of its forever together awkward parts.

  • margaret meyers

Why would a 24 year old make such an effort to look like a slutty 15 year old?

    • aeg66

      More like 5 year old…

  • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

I thought she might be onto something until I started scrolling down.

  • alwaysanswerc

There is no one who can convince me that this girl isn’t the same person as Christa B Allen

  • jmorino08

I feel like you can see her breasts in that top and I don’t know how old she is, but she’s too young for us to see that much of her boobs in public. I can’t even look at the pictures long enough to make a judgement on the rest of the outfit…

  • Carrieanno

    Ouch.

  • NICHOLAS PASQUALE

Dear lady I’ve never heard of,

I am offended, primarily by your skirt. It is bright and hurts my eyes.

Love always, simpleton you’ve never heard of

  • guest2visits

This was a bad outfit on both the model and Holland.
The top might be cute over a camisole, but not over whatever she’s using.
The pan collar necklace is pretty, but I don’t think it looks best with this top.
If the satin skirt was just a normal pleated skirt just above the knee, – I would love it.
But altogether; this kind of looks like a sexy school girl uniform. And tacky.   Sorry!

  • PrunellaV

She looks like a 5th grader. The hair looks blah, the makeup amateurish, and the clothes vintage, and not in a good way.

  • LilyPad

    NO TO EVERYTHING

  • http://twitter.com/hurricaneemilyy Emily Shaver

Alright so get rid of the collar and use that same texture in a belt with this. Then instead of that hideous bubble they should be high waisted shorts in a deep color like a navy blue or burgundy. THEN, this would work

  • MemHey

first thought:  skirt = disney’s snow white. that color of yellow satin works for 5 year old princesses… hard to dissociate that fabric from that concept…

  • ccm800

    She looks like my niece.

  • aeg66

All thats missing is a Good Ship Lollipop & tap shoes

  • ChaquitaPhilly

Pale and terrible. Those “bubble” skirts always like like they need to be hemmed.

  • TropiCarla

I would think that necklace is Kenley’s dream accessory.

  • KathKo

So, I opened the note and only saw a sort of boring top with a weird collar so I scroll down to see what it was in a closer shot and the my eyes met the skirt.
    And I was like “… what ?”
First the top and the skirt don’t go together, then both make her look thick and short, then on the close up the boobs under the top look weird, then the collar is not a collar but a necklace.
    Ooookay.
Oh, and, girl, you look like your 12 years old so how come your wearing street worker shoes with a kinky street wiorker outfit.
Well, now everybody talk about her.
I mean, I don’t even know who she is but I certainly don’t want to go and party with her !

  • butterflysunita

Horrible outfit.  I think she knows it too–she looks uncomfortable.

  • livesarah

No you were right the first time. It’s not her skirt. That skirt should never have been made! It is such a great colour, fabric would have looked great on a well-designed skirt with that flesh-coloured top I would ordinarily hate but somehow can’t. I know this is an ancient thread but this skirt deserves a strong reaction! Burn it!
